Abstract:Aging Studies and Postcolonial Studies belong together in a rather fundamental way, given that they share profound theoretical roots and far-reaching critical perspectives. These derive not only from the more recent poststructuralist discourse on others but also, further back, from the existentialist discourse on others - particularly in issues relating to "The Look" as elaborated by Jean-Paul Sartre in his major philosophical treatise Being and Nothingness and in his reflections on racism, colonialism and humanism. These texts have had a decisive influence on both Aging Studies and Postcolonial Studies. First, no less a figure than one of the main progenitors of Postcolonial Studies, Frantz Fanon, drawing on Sartre, analyses the gaze of the colonial masters and black responses. Second, two of the most significant theoretical works on aging and age to have appeared since 1945 were directly inspired by Sartre: Jean Améry's On Aging and Simone de Beauvoir's The Coming of Age. Additional sources of interest are the phenomenology of responsibility by Emmanuel Lévinas and works on absurdity and rebellion by Albert Camus. It is this early influence that is explored from two perspectives adopted by more recent postcolonialist discourse: debates around the concept of alienation involve analysing and critiquing the kind of epistemic violence which renders abject and invisible not only old people but also all those who are 'othered' by a dominant gaze (racism, ageism, othering); and the concept of alterity involves debating ways of acknowledging otherness responsibly on the one hand and being able to articulate and represent oneself on the other: Can the subaltern speak? We might similarly ask "Can the old speak?" Postcolonial discourse tells us that this is not quite as easy as some versions of so-called "Happy Gerontology" proclaim. The aim of the present article is to examine the foundational existentialist critique of racism and ageism and to render it useful for re-negotiating possibilities for aging differently - without othering.
What frailty can tell us about ageing well: towards an alternative paradigm to 'successful ageing'

Abstract:This paper considers the concept of successful ageing by means of a dialogue with the concept of frailty. This dialogue reveals the limits and blindspots of both concepts as well as their apparent dichotomy and the importance of understanding both the objective and subjective experience of ageing. In particular, the dialogue highlights that both frailty and successful ageing are social constructs that derive their meaning from what society values (autonomy, youthful capacities). They cannot by themselves account for the fact that flourishing and frailty are often found together whilst conversely successful ageing may not bring satisfaction. I argue that the arts and humanities supply us with conceptual and methodological tools with which to revisit what it is to age well offering a holistic approach that combines sensitivity both to older people's lived experience and to the underpinning material conditions and embodied realities. For this purpose, and building on previous scholarship in cultural gerontology, I suggest the unique value of concepts and frameworks associated by Simone de Beauvoir. When brought into alignment with the tenets of cultural and narrative gerontology, these concepts facilitate a rich understanding of the nuances and paradoxes of flourishing in deep old age which can also aid in restorying both old age and the life course more generally. I illustrate this through two examples: a feminist self-help guide to ageing, which accepts both limitations and growth and a film that imagines the possibilities of authentic ageing even despite a context of poverty, patriarchy and Alzheimer's Disease.
Aging as Otherness: Revisiting Simone de Beauvoir’s Old Age

Abstract:Abstract Aging has been given short shrift as a topic in philosophy. The aim of this article is to redress this neglect by revisiting some of the key philosophical issues in Simone de Beauvoir’s book, Old Age. In her notion of old age’s unrealizability, its impossibility of fully embodying a subject position, and the role played by the other in denying such subjectivity, she draws upon the work of both Heidegger and Sartre. The dilemma she repeatedly draws attention to, of always seeming to age in ways other than as one’s self, raises the question of whether any view of aging as an authentic subjectivity may be no more than, in Heidegger’s words, a “chimerical undertaking.” In examining how the concepts of bad faith and inauthenticity are used by Heidegger and Sartre, the article concludes that for both these writers, an authentic subject position can be maintained in later life, without ending up as the otherwise inauthentic subject of others’ collective imaginary of “a good age.”

Abstract:Dominant discourses of ageing are often confined to what is less painful to think about and therefore idealise or denigrate ageing and later life. We present findings from an exploratory psychosocial study, in a Nordic context, into three later-life transitions: from working life to retirement, from mental health to dementia and from life to death. Because, for some, these topics are hard to bear and therefore defended against and routinely excluded from everyday awareness, we used a method led by imagery and affect – the Visual Matrix – to elicit participants’ free associative personal and collective imagination. Through analysis of data extracts, on the three transitions, we illustrate oscillations between defending against the challenges of ageing and realism in facing the anxieties it can provoke. A recurring theme includes the finality of individual life and the inter-generational continuity, which together link life and death, hope and despair, separation and connectedness.

Ageism and the Unrealizability of Old Age

Abstract:This article addresses the topic of ageism through the lens provided by Simone de Beauvoir concerning the subjective “unrealizability” of age. In her book, Old Age, she adopted the terminology of existentialism to argue that old age was one of the “unrealizables”: phenomena that can be grasped only through their “otherness.” Old age, in her view, can only ever be understood as an object position, or rather a multiplicity of object positions, none of which aligns with the experiencing self. This inherent otherness of age provides a ready template for viewing agedness as an undesired, undesirable, and fundamentally alien characteristic. The outwardly ageing subject’s view of him- or herself remains always ageless, distinct from such otherness, experienced as more real than any self-reflected aged other. But while age’s unrealizability may sustain the individual’s subject position as ageless, it risks perpetuating the devaluation of the aged as always a collective other. Rather than demanding a resolution of such object and subject positions, I suggest that a more realizable goal may be to accept this inevitable opposition and focus instead upon improving the objective conditions of later life. Enriching the actual relations of care might constitute such an objectively “realizable” goal, one that is also in keeping with the social intent of de Beauvoir’s book.
The othering of old age: Insights from Postcolonial Studies

Abstract:When it comes to old age, we are witnessing almost revolutionary changes at the present time. After decades of ignorance and lack of public interest, old age has fundamentally been re-negotiated. A diverse range of authors have diagnosed the growing bifurcation of old age into a rather independent and capable Third Age and a deep old Fourth Age that is characterized by sickness, frailty and dependency. Against this backdrop, many gerontologists claim that the so-called young-old are praised and valued for their (ongoing) "sameness" in terms of midlife-norms and capabilities, whereas the oldest old are increasingly excluded from humanity by radical "othering". Taking up this diagnosis, the article elaborates on this growing polarization within later life: Based on empirical research on the re-negotiation of old age in Germany, this contribution argues that the juxtaposition of "sameness" and "otherness" obscures the true character of the polarization, particularly with regard to the social role of the Third Age. Instead of sameness and otherness, we rather witness different processes of othering, with the young-old being valued as the other and the oldest old being disdained as the other. Despite the existence of profound critical analyses of the abjection associated with the Fourth Age as well as a considerable amount of literature on old age activation and the new role of the young-old, the specific point of this article's concern-the othering of the Third Age-has been completely neglected. The article discusses the reasons for this gap in more detail and will indicate to what extent concepts from Postcolonial Studies may help us to understand the dual process of othering-glorification and abjection.

Abstract:Objectives: Higgs and Gilleard (2015) have uniquely theorized the fourth age as a "social imaginary" of deep old age that blends notions of frailty, abjection, and the moral relations of care. This report evaluates the coherence and reach of the fourth-age imaginary among older adults in relative good health. Methods: In a qualitative design and within samples at 5 sites (in Czechia, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States), 138 adults aged 70+ and still living independently discussed what it would mean to be "not independent" in later life. Replies referenced other people in general, specific people, and one's own actual or potential experience. Results: Pooled across sites, the views of our participants confirm the theorized features of the social imaginary. Participants spoke readily of gateway infirmities heralding frailty and of frailty's abjection; expressed dread and abhorrence of dependence, some saying that death would be preferable; and were anxious about nursing homes and about burdening others with an obligation to care for them. Discussion: The bleak but formidable reputation of the fourth age impinges on those living in the third. The consonant expression of fourth-age features among older adults on 3 continents supports Gilleard and Higgs's claim that the fourth-age imaginary "contains a universal ontological quality" owing to human corporeality and the senescence to which it is subject. Fourth-age studies that document the lived experience of frailty and dependence have the potential to undermine the imaginary and furnish new narratives for facing the future.
An 'all-world ageing' perspective and its wider ethics of care: An empirical illustration

Abstract:Recent commentaries have proposed 'all-world ageing' as a new perspective for social scientific ageing research. It is based on the theoretical observation that the ageing process involves all forms of entities co-ageing relationally with each other, and with their surrounds. Its disciplinary implications hence being that what we categorize as ageing in social scientific ageing research should not be limited to human bodies, and that ageing non-humans should be brought under its purview. To empirically illustrate these theoretical and disciplinary assertions, and explore their implications, the current paper reports a study of how people co-age with non-humans they interact with in their daily lives. Sixteen people aged 66-90 were interviewed, ten of them also being observed at those times. The findings show some intricate and diverse relations that involve their co-ageing with varied biological entities and nature surrounds (such as plants, domestic animals and green spaces) and varied non-biological entities and non-nature surrounds (such as materials, technologies, accommodations, organizations and infrastructures). Meanwhile, important crosscutting themes - including lifespan, function and aesthetics - emerge as objectives of care, valued and exercised in broad terms. This empirical reconnaissance shows the potential for an all-world ageing perspective to engage diverse societal challenges and inform diverse areas of practice as part of a wider ethics of care. From it, a number of important considerations and undertakings arise for future scholarship.

Abstract:As societies are ageing and mediatizing at the same time, it becomes both timely and relevant to develop particular perspectives on the role and meaning of media for older people. The diversity and inequality in the lived experience of the ageing population in the new media environment constitute a blind spot in current research. In this essay, we bring literatures of (cultural) ageing studies and (new) media studies into conversation with each other by asking what future directions for research on older people and their media lives from the particular perspective of social diversity could be. We propose three key interventions: developing a focus on social stratification and inequality broadly conceived; designing research with a life course perspective rather than reducing people to age groups; and focusing empirical work looking at the various ways people ‘do’ media in an ensemblematic way.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Associations of young-old age with successful aging have contributed to relegating negatively perceived aspects of aging to very old age. This has prompted the formation of the social imaginary of the fourth age. Re-examinations of the fourth age foreground the diversity of aging experiences among the oldest old. In this sense, literature is in a privileged position to contribute individual narratives of aging to this field. The main aim of this article is to analyze Irish writer Jennifer Johnston's later fiction and how particularly two of her later fictional works contribute a nuanced re-examination of the fourth age through the narrativization of individual aging experiences of the oldest old in the contemporary Irish context. Research design and methods: The work of sociologists and social theorists on re-examinations of the fourth age functions as the framework to analyze the selected fictional texts. Results: The analysis of the oldest old characters in Truth or Fiction and Naming the Stars shows the contribution of literary texts to rethinking the fourth age as a time characterized by the inextricable combination of gains and losses, with emphasis on the diversity of the aging experiences of the oldest old and on the importance of sociocultural influence on individual aging. Discussion and implications: Combining longitudinal analyses with case studies, such as the ones suggested by these fictional texts, can provide a more accurate knowledge of the experience of advanced old age and the fourth age.
Outdated and re-configured: Challenging linear conceptualizations of ageing through the case of revived obsolete technologies

Abstract:Taking as a starting point the conventional view of ageing as a linear process beginning in a youthful and productive stage but gradually deteriorating, this paper shifts the usual anthropocentric focal point towards technological artifacts which do not conform to this typical view. More specifically, three examples of technologies previously considered obsolete, but which have seen a revival in the last decade, are presented: the so-called dumbphones, analogue cameras, and vinyl players. Although very different at first glance, the three cases of these revived technologies show a similar evolution trajectory which breaks from the typical view of ageing in technological artifacts. Instead, they indicate how their revival does not simply entail a reconsideration of their initial value (such as it is often the case with antiques or heirlooms), but a transformation, hybridisation, and re-envisioned purpose. To this effect, the agential realism theory is applied to show how the revival of technological artifacts and practices once considered outdated attempts to dissolve binaries such as old/new, young/old, or slow/fast. Furthermore, such artifacts reveal trajectories of ageing that are unlike their human counterparts, but which can make way for new manners of articulating issues pertaining to ageing as a process in humans as well. The contribution of the paper lies in illustrating how adopting a non-linear view of ageing and fundamentally questioning its inherent binaries has the capacity to produce a much-needed nuanced view of ageing in humans, non-humans, and their sociomaterial entanglements.

Abstract:Supporting people to 'age in place' – to live independently at home and remain connected to the community – is an international policy priority. But the process of ageing in place is mediated in a socio-cultural context where neoliberal tropes of successful ageing reproduce a pervasive model about 'ageing well' by elevating ideals of individualised choice and self-governance. Based on two waves of qualitative interviews and interim observations, we employ a Bourdieusian logic to explore the ramifications of this context on the experiences of 46 people in later older age (80+) ageing in place in North East England. All participants enacted everyday improvisatory practices to render their homes habitable. But our participants – most of whom were located in middle-class social positions – supplemented such improvisions with a strategic disposition to plan for and actively shape their ageing-in-place futures. Our participants conveyed a distinct sense of agency over their ageing futures. Underpinning their orientations to practice was an awareness of the value attached to individually 'ageing well' and a distancing from the agedness associated with the fourth age. Our analysis demonstrates the role of capital, accrued throughout the life course, in bringing such future trajectories into effect. The central argument of this paper therefore is that the embodiment of (neoliberal) ideals of successful ageing in place requires the deployment of classed capital. In sum, contrary to the individualising narratives ubiquitous in policy pertaining to ageing well, we show the importance of classed structural moorings in this process.

Abstract:Influencers are usually associated with young people creating waves on social media. However, there are "Influencer" at age 60 and beyond. This study unveils 'Female Instagram Elderly Influencers' who inspire every generation through appeal and presence on the platform. This study explores how older women influencers on Instagram promote themselves online and how they challenge the stereotypes about ageing. In an era defined by the growing influence of digital media, this study reveals the unique perspectives these women use to challenge the social assumptions about ageing. In particular, this study proposed new ways of ageing, defying gender and setting newer perspectives on old age and ageing. By using a netnography technique, an extensive investigation of the online identities and discussions of eight senior female Instagram influencers was conducted. Netnography has allowed to delve deeper into their public profiles, observing their virtual communities and providing insights into their online identity. The results draw attention to a few key characteristics that characterise the online personas of these "older female influencers" on Instagram. These influencers challenge preconceived notions about ageing through their profiles by projecting an image of themselves as vibrant, engaged and active. They portray a colourful, opportunity-filled life full of self-expression through their carefully chosen texts and videos, which showcase their love for everything around them, like food, travel, fashion, quick tips, etc. Furthermore, the findings suggest that these influencers provide their followers with a sense of empowerment. By sharing their personal day-to-day experiences, wisdom and advice, they interact with a broad audience and uplift and reassure those going through difficult times. People of all ages engage with their content, showing how this sense of community is 'ageless'. The critical role older female Instagram influencers play in eradicating age-related stereotypes and creating a welcoming community is revealed through this netnography investigation. Their experiences and online persona offer a nuanced viewpoint on ageing, encouraging individuals to take advantage of life's opportunities at any age.

Abstract:Abstract This paper argues that the philosophy of ambiguity, associated with Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Simone de Beauvoir, provides a helpful framework for understanding the complex and paradoxical nature of old age outside the dominant categories of the ‘third’ and ‘fourth’ ages. Building on philosophical literature in cultural gerontology including that focused on the ‘art of living’ and other approaches that draw on existentialist thought, it suggests ‘ambiguity’ as a theme that has been overlooked in such literature. The advantage of this approach is that it can accommodate contradictory elements and thus underpin an integrated approach to old age. At the same time, in distinguishing between ontological and social dimensions of ambiguity, the conceptual framework offers a new perspective on ageism that can help clarify the distinction between ageism as oppression and the negative aspects of deep old age itself. The paper is structured as follows. After making the case for the value and importance of ‘ambiguity’ as a framework for viewing old age, I set out the key aspects of this philosophy as found in the work of Merleau-Ponty and particularly Beauvoir. I then apply this framework to a discussion of two literary memoirs of deep old age, by Diana Athill and Florida Scott-Maxwell respectively. I argue that the picture of old age which emerges contrasts with the hegemonic discourses enframed by successful ageing and frailed old age and offer the possibility not only of a true appreciation of old age but also of a more meaningful life course itself.

Abstract:Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is used to determine amplification status of the Her-2/neu gene in specimens of newly diagnosed breast carcinoma. The Vysis kit for FISH analysis stipulates that the tissue be formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded. Concerns regarding carcinogenicity of formalin and environmental effects of formalin waste have led to the development of formalin replacement products. An increasing number of breast biopsy specimens are being fixed in these substitutes. We tested 6 non-formalin–based fixatives to determine their impact on FISH testing for Her-2/neu gene amplification status by comparison with formalin-fixed control specimens from the same neoplasm. Specimens fixed in Pen-Fix, Prefer, Histochoice, UniFix, and GTF were associated with absent or technically compromised staining in at least one of the 3 neoplasms tested for each fixative when compared to the formalin-fixed control. O-Fix did not seem to compromise staining quality in 3 paired specimens tested.
Effects of long-term cocaine administration and exercise on cardiac metabolism and isomyosin expression.

Abstract:Although chronic cocaine use is cardiotoxic, its use remains problematic in athletics. Hence adaptive changes induced in the heart by superimposing chronic cocaine use on an exercise training are of interest but remain poorly understood. Therefore this study investigated the effects of cocaine treatment combined with exercise training on the metabolic and contractile properties of the heart. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one of four groups: normal sedentary (NS, n = 6), cocaine sedentary (CS, n = 6), normal trained (NT, n = 6), and cocaine trained (CT, n = 6). Trained animals were sprint trained 4 times/week. CS and CT animals received cocaine (25 mg/kg, ip) 6 times/week, 15 min before each exercise bout and 2 additional times per week. After 12 weeks, all animals were sacrificed, and the hearts were removed and analyzed for citrate synthase activity, 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase activity, Ca(2+)-activated myofibrillar ATPase activity, and myosin isoform distribution. None of the groups demonstrated altered cardiac metabolic properties, but cocaine alone and in conjunction with exercise reduced myofibrillar ATPase activity (p < 0.05) and increased expression of the low ATPase myosin isoform, V3. These data suggest that the potential of the citric acid cycle and beta-oxidation is not sensitive to chronic cocaine treatment, but the distribution of cardiac myosin among its three isoforms is affected. Furthermore, high-intensity treadmill training does not interact with cocaine to further alter these properties.

Abstract:Chapter 11 identifies new and creative ways in which architects, artists and designers might be drawn into debates around age-friendly urban practice. The chapter describes the way in which current understandings of age-friendly design are limited and how an emerging field of socially engaged design practice can be harnessed to reinvigorate the terms of age-friendly debate and practice – drawing a new generation of designers into conversation with age-friendly policy. By redefining what we mean by age-friendly design, it becomes possible, this chapter argues, to expand and invigorate the field of age-friendly practice, enabling creative practitioners to engage with and creatively inform age-friendly policymaking.

Abstract:Older adults are today healthier, they live longer, and many are economically more fortunate than previous generations. Studies of the biological and emotional benefits of creativity interwoven with the advantages of contemporary longevity demonstrate that older adults' engagement in artistic activities encourages health‐promoting behaviors. This chapter explores how art pedagogies and contexts of learning have been adapted to engage older adults in creative practices in the visual arts. It examines theories of learning in adult education as well as art education for older adults, describing the variations in praxis that developed from observations and research. Art education approaches for older adults benefit from the potentials of andragogical models and transformative learning theory. Beyond the pedagogies employed in formal education and community‐based art projects, the social support found in communities of practice such as the University of the Third Age and the self‐determined autonomy characteristic of heutagogical approaches are also examined.

Abstract:Abstract This article analyses selected works of Agnès Varda as original contributions to cultural gerontology. It focuses on Varda’s pronounced interest in older people throughout her career and explores how, in experimental portraits and self-portraits, she approaches ageing by harnessing surprising devices — temporal, spatial, aesthetic, haptic, and affective — to challenge ageism and assumptions of disability, and to encourage identification. The article pays particular attention to a series of interlinked video portraits of a fourth-age female nude in 7 p., cuis., s. de b... (à saisir) (1984) and to Varda’s bold and innovative exploration and performance of her own old age in her co-directed film Visages villages (2017). The latter foregrounds consistently the physical and affective dimensions of old age and may be read not only as an extended self-portrait, but more broadly as a protracted exercise in empathy with older people. The article examines how the film cuts across thematic and aesthetic norms both by foregrounding older subjects and by validating them as fascinating and beautiful. It also reads Visages villages as a powerful appeal to an intergenerational ethics of care, established in part through Varda’s creative partnership with street photographer and artist JR.
