Abstract:Hippocrates, an influential figure in ancient Greek medicine, is best known for his lasting contribution, the Hippocratic Oath, which includes a significant message about obstetrics and gynecology. Given the Oath's status as a widely regarded ethical code for medical practice, it requires critical evaluation. The message of the Oath, as it related to obstetrics and gynecology, is expressed in ancient Greek by the phrase "οὐδὲ γυναικὶ πεσσὸν φθόριον δώσω" which translates directly to "I will not give to any woman a harming pessary." The words fetus and abortion were not present in the original Greek text of the Oath. Yet, this message of the Hippocratic Oath has been interpreted often as a prohibition against abortion. In this article, we present a critical linguistic and historical analysis and argue against the notion that the Hippocratic Oath was prohibiting abortion. We provide evidence that the words "foetum" (fetus) and "abortu" (abortion) were inserted in the Latin translations of the Oath, which then carried on in subsequent English versions. The addition of the words "fetus" and "abortion" in the Latin translations significantly altered the Oath's original meaning. Unfortunately, these alterations in the translation of the Hippocratic Oath have been accepted over the years because of cultural, religious, and social reasons. We assert that because the original Hippocratic Oath did not contain language related to abortion, it should not be construed as prohibiting it. The interpretation of the Oath should be based on precise and rigorous translation and speculative interpretations should be avoided.

Abstract:The Hippocratic Oath is a composite text that dates back thousands of years and has been rewritten many times. This text is still a key reference, both from a deontological point of view (because of the principles it promotes and the professional morality it defends) and from an ethical point of view (based on the precepts of the ancients, concerning the ethos of practitioners and the doctor-patient relationship). All medical doctors in France pronounce it at least once in their professional life, at the end of their PhD defense. Nevertheless, this text and this moment are sometimes judged to be outmoded or even outdated. Based on a philosophical methodology, paying attention to the contribution of human sciences, the aim of this article is to highlight how the Hippocratic Oath still enlightens us today, in the current context of paradigm shifts (the doctor-patient relationship, model of co-decision; contractualization; market logic, etc.) and multiple crises (health crises, resource constraints, wars, etc.). The result of this survey is that while medicine is both an art and a science the Oath does however, emphasize the humanist dimension of daily practice. That's why reading and pronouncing the Hippocratic Oath implies taking an interest not only in understanding its deeper meaning and spirit beyond the letter of the text, but also in what we wish to pass on to future generations in terms of key ethical references.

Abstract:Background: The Hippocratic Oath is a standard of medical ethics. Oath adaptations are common. Objective: Evaluate students’ perceptions regarding the oath. Design: Survey of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical School graduating students regarding the oath’s relevance, content, and application, and whether a choice of version should be provided. Results: Forty-two of the fifty-three students (79 percent) considered the original oath relevant. Most (53 percent) disagreed that the oath in its original form be used, and most preferred a modified oath. More agreed (40 percent) than disagreed (28 percent) on providing a choice of version of the oath. The mean of correct answers as to the original oath’s contents was 68 percent. Euthanasia and abortion prohibitions were recognized by 68 percent and 62 percent, respectively. Increased knowledge of the original’s contents correlated with decreased desire that it be used ( p = .02). Recognition of euthanasia/abortion prohibitions was significantly better for those in disagreement than in agreement that the original be used. Those who disagreed that a choice of oath versions be provided had significantly better knowledge of the original’s euthanasia/abortion prohibitions than those who agreed. However, those who felt strongly that a choice should or should not be given each had a 100 percent accuracy of identifying euthanasia/abortion prohibitions. Conclusions: Most students preferred an adapted oath to the original. Increased student knowledge of the original oath’s contents, including reference to euthanasia/abortion, significantly correlated with decreased desire to use it. Given the original’s importance in medical ethics, this is concerning. A subset of students, however, affirmed the original’s value and desired its use. Improved education in the Hippocratic oath is important, given modern medicine’s complex moral issues. Summary: The Hippocratic oath is a standard of medical ethics. Oath adaptations eliminating the original’s prohibitions of abortion/euthanasia are common. Most medical students who were questioned preferred the adapted oath to the original. Only two-thirds recognized the original’s prohibitions of abortion/euthanasia. Those who knew of the original oath’s prohibitions also had a decreased desire that it be used. Students disagreeing that a choice of versions of the oath be provided had better knowledge of these prohibitions. This is concerning, given the original oath’s importance in medical ethics including at the 1945–1949 Nuremberg trials. Nonetheless, a subset of students affirmed the original Hippocratic oath’s importance, desiring its use.

Abstract:A selection of writings on the Hippocratic Oath, with a variety of opinions, has been critically reviewed. The aim of this article was a comparative analysis of the contents of the two most widely known versions of the Oath, namely ?Classic Version? - Edelstein?s translation from Greek to English, and ?Modern Version? - Lasagna?s modification of the former version. Some attention has also been paid to several texts composed in a similar vein to the Hippocratic Oath. This short review of the pertinent literature shows that opinions about its relevance range from warm approval to total disapproval. A number of pros and cons were discussed, and our own preferences were clearly stated. The fact that the tradition, in which graduate medical students take some version of the Hippocratic Oath, is nurtured at (almost) all medical schools over the world supports an affirmative answer to the question posed in the title of the article.

Abstract:The present paper discusses the relevance and significance of the Hippocratic Oath to contemporary medical ethical and moral values. It attempts to answer the questions about some controversial issues related to the Oath. The text is divided in two parts. Part I discusses the general attributes and ethical values of the Oath, while Part II presents a detailed analysis of each passage of the Oath with regard to perennial ethical principles and moral values. Part I starts with the contribution of Hippocrates and his School of Cos to medicine. It continues by examining the moral dilemmas concerning physicians and patients in the Classical Times and in the Modern World. It also investigates how the Hippocratic Oath stands nowadays, with regard to the remarkable and often revolutionary advancements in medical practice and the significant evolution in medical ethics. Further, it presents the debate and the criticism about the relevance of the general attributes and ethical values of the Oath to those of modern societies. Finally, it discusses the endurance of the ethical values of the Hippocratic Oath over the centuries until today with respect to the physicians’ commitment to the practice of patient-oriented medicine. Part I concludes with the Oath’s historic input in the Judgment delivered at the close of the Nuremberg “Doctors’ Trial”; this Judgement has become legally binding for the discipline in the Western World and was the basis of the Nuremberg Code. The ethical code of the Oath turned out to be a fundamental part of western law not only on medical ethics but also on patients’ rights regarding research.

Abstract:This is the second part of a paper on the relevance and significance of the Hippocratic Oath to modern medical ethical and moral values with the aim at answering questions on controversial issues related to the Oath. Part I argued that the general attributes and ethical values of the Oath are relevant to the modern world. Part II attempts to elucidate the interpretation of the specific injunctions of the Oath from today’s perspective in relation to ethical values concerning the duties of physicians to patients and society. The objective is to prove that the Oath has established the general context of medical ethics of the physician–patient relationship, which reflects long-lasting moral values that still define the medical profession. The Oath has exemplified the fundamental modern ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence and confidentiality. Its foremost message focuses on patients’ best interests and not on the prohibition of surgery, euthanasia or abortion, as is generally believed. Furthermore, the Oath as a code of professional identity has had a powerful impact on modem judicial opinions regarding medical ethics. Abstract:The prevalence of intestinal parasites in domestic cats from the London area was surveyed over an 18-month period by microscopic examination of faecal samples. Of the 947 cats examined 11.5 per cent were infected with Toxocara cati, 1.9 per cent with Isospora felis, 1.2 per cent with Dipylidium caninum, 1.2 per cent with Taenia taeniaeformis, 0.8 per cent with I rivolta and 0.2 per cent with Toxascaris leonina.

Abstract:Context: It is widely understood that reciting a contemporary version of the Hippocratic Oath has two purposes. It constitutes a public commitment on the part of the prospective doctor to preserving the traditional values of the medical profession and to meeting the obligations expected of a doctor. It is also an important symbolic ritual in the process of professional identity formation. Methods: A portion of the 1964 version of the Hippocratic Oath is examined for its relevance to the current practice of medicine. Its closing paragraph reads: 'If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, be respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.' This is interpreted as representing the doctor's expectations of the practice of medicine: job satisfaction; status, and prestige. It also conveys the understanding that enjoying these benefits is contingent upon the doctor's adherence to the terms of the Oath. Conclusions: Our current understanding of the relationship between medicine and society is that a social contract exists under which members of the profession are granted a privileged position in society on the understanding that they will meet society's reasonable expectations. These expectations entail obligations not only to patients and to the profession, but to wider society. The Oath under consideration, which concentrates on medicine's obligations to patients and to the profession, does not adequately reflect its obligations to society. It is suggested that versions of the Hippocratic Oath used in the future should be updated to better reflect the obligations of both individual doctors and the medical profession to society.

Abstract:The Hippocratic Oath and the Declaration of Geneva of the World Medical Association are compared in terms of content and origin. Their relevance for current medical practice is investigated. The status which is ascribed to these documents will be shown and the status which they can reasonably claim to have will be explored. Arguments in favor of the Hippocratic Oath that rely on historical stability or historical origin are being examined. It is demonstrated that they get caught up in paradoxes. Should doctors swear the Hippocratic Oath or the Declaration of Geneva? The Hippocratic Oath is a remarkable historic document, which contains important elements still relevant for medical ethics today. Its interpretation as a timeless, still valid medical code is unfounded. The historical arguments, that should justify its validity, are untenable. The Declaration of Geneva, and not the Hippocratic Oath, can legitimately claim to come close to representing the most important principles of professional medical conduct in today's globalised world.

Abstract:Almost every medical school's graduation ceremony includes some sort of professional medical oath. The Hippocratic Oath, written over 2400 years ago, is the oldest and most well-known of these vows. The essential components of modern medical ethics-beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice-outlined in the Hippocratic Oath persist to this day. The substance of the Hippocratic Oath has been altered and its authorship questioned, yet the major world religions, Baha'i, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism, had versions of the Hippocratic Oath to emphasize the importance of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice for newly initiated physicians. By investigating these alternative versions of the Hippocratic Oath, similarities between different faiths emerge, reinforcing a common thread of humanity that spans across time.

Abstract:Physicians have been taking the Hippocratic Oath for centuries. The Oath contains a set of ethical rules designed to guide physicians through their profession; it articulates a set of true north principles that govern the practice of medicine. The Hippocratic Oath has undergone several revisions, most notably in 1948 by the World Medical Association. However, in an era of rapid change in medicine, we believe it is time to update the Oath with modest but meaningful additions so that it optimally reflects 21st century health care. The rise of digital health has dramatically changed the practice of medicine in a way that could not have been easily predicted at the time Hippocrates outlined his ethical principles of medicine. Digital health is a broad term that encompasses use of digital devices and platforms, including electronic health records, patient-provider portals, mobile health apps, wearable biosensors, artificial intelligence, social media platforms, and medical extended reality, to improve the process and outcomes of health care delivery. These technologies have driven a cultural transformation in the delivery of care. We offer modest suggestions to help prompt discussion and contemplation about the current Oath and its relevancy to our changing times. Our suggestions are not meant to be a definitive set of final recommendations. Rather, we propose new text that bodies such as the World Medical Association might consider integrating into an updated Oath, just as previous changes were adopted to ensure the Oath remains relevant and impactful for all physicians and their patients.

Abstract:The art of medicine was formed in Greece in close relationship to culture and philosophy. During the Christian era, it was projected through the Corpus Hippocraticus, in several ethical and philosophical documents such as The Oath of Medical Science, Medical Law, Decency, Precepts, Antique Medicine, Airs and Aphorisms, Waters and places. The central idea of Hippocratic philosophy is the principle of wholeness, summarized by Plato in the sentence "The certain knowledge of nature is solely possible from medicine and only when it is correctly approached as a whole". Clinical actions, are imbued by Hippocratic ethics; their aim is the ill that is an anthropos, a human being. The physician must take care of the ill with devotion, selflessness, comprehension and compassion. The oath is the supreme deontological code that summarizes the essential concepts of Hippocratic philosophy. Recent studies suggest that there is a great distance between the thinking of Hippocrates and present scientific medicine. Hippocratic philosophy rejects the epistemological principles of modern science. The Hippocratic logic is probabilistic and temporal and rejects the principles of noncontradiction, of identity and therefore the abstract determinism of contemporary science. The present force of the oath is explained because its ethics and epistemology are matters of medicine that understands the real world of the ill, trying to avoid suffering and injustice. Only Hippocrates can defend each ill as a whole with the wisdom of its philosophy.

Abstract:Abstract The Hippocratic Oath is the foundation for the moral ideals and goals of Western medicine. We aimed to develop a research tool to determine the perception among diverse groups of physicians and to determine the current perception of the Hippocratic Oath. We used the semantic differential to map the connotative meaning of the Oath. We selected 34 research articles with abstracts from a literature search. The attributes (adjectives) used to describe the Oath were added to adjectives from a semi-structured questionnaire filled in at the Olomouc military hospital. We modified the factors and selected 8 scales by optimizing the semantic differential. Overall, Czech physicians perceived the Oath highly positively based on the factor of evaluation. Negative and even neutral viewpoints were rare. The strongest factor– progressivity–revealed that the topicality of the Hippocratic Oath is very important to physicians. A statistically significant difference was found between female physicians and their male counterparts, with women rating the Oath’s progressivity higher than men, as well as perceiving the Oath generally more positively than men. Our analysis confirmed the importance and success of continuing education. The standardized methodology can be used in medical education to analyze the semantic space of the Hippocratic Oath.

Abstract:The majority of the German medical institutions and nearly half of the clinicians during the Nazi regime provided unwavering support to the distorted Nazi views on health and disability. Leading physicians were an integral part of the atrocities carried out during that era, with some of them having a vital role in executing the ideology of the "final solution". The names of Carl Clauberg and Walter Stoeckel, two notable doctors in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, were also linked with the third Reich. Both of these physicians, collaborated, each in his own way, with the Nazi regime, which tainted their legacy indefinitely. The two received professional honor for their contribution to the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, which were unrelated to their Nazi past, after their names were linked in the form of eponyms to surgical procedures and examinations, which they developed. In recent years, as a consequence of their disturbing past, there are increasing arguments which call for erasing their eponyms from the medical lexicon. We, on the contrary, believe that the opposite is true and that maintaining these eponyms will actually enable teaching future generations and serve a dual educational role to both highlight professional and scientific achievements as well as serve as a mark of Cain and warning that professional achievements do not prevent ethical decline. Preserving the name will provide an educational opportunity to teach about the responsibilities that come with professional leadership, which these doctors abused carelessly, in order to prevent history from repeating itself.
[DOCTORS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS EUTHANASIA]

Abstract:Background: Euthanasia is a highly controversial issue due to ethical, legal, religious, social and psychological aspects. Objectives: To examine the attitudes of physicians regarding euthanasia and the background variables related to these attitudes. Methods: A survey was administered to 131 physicians working at Barzilai Medical Center. Physicians were queried about their attitudes regarding euthanasia. Results: Most doctors have encountered terminally ill patients within their work or personal lives; 62% agreed that a person has the right to decide whether to expedite their own death; 56% thought they should accept a patient's request to prevent/stop life-preserving treatment; 53% agreed that euthanasia should be allowed, while about 20% thought that in any case, doctors should preserve the patient's life, even despite the patient's wishes to die. Forty percent of doctors faced the dilemma of ordering DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). Only half of the physicians had a familiarity with the law, and 41% didn't know if a DNR procedure exists in their department. Doctors specializing in internal professions held more positive attitudes toward euthanasia than other professions. In addition, the doctor's years of experience, level of secularity, and number of encounters with terminally ill patients each had a positive correlation with their respective attitudes towards euthanasia. Discussion: Attitudes toward euthanasia are quite positive, although data shows a conflict of values: the sacredness of human life versus the desire to alleviate the patient's suffering and to respect their autonomy. It is recommended to re-discuss the law, and to inform physicians that the DNR procedure exists.

Abstract:The widespread emergence of innumerable technologies within health care has complicated the choices facing caregivers and their patients. The escalation of knowledge and technical innovation has been accompanied by an erosion of moral and ethical consensus among health providers that is reflected in the abandonment of the Hippocratic Oath as the immutable bedrock of medical ethics. Ethical conflicts arise when the values of health professionals collide with the expressed wishes of patients or the dictates of regulatory bodies and administrators. Increasing attempts by groups outside of the medical profession to limit freedom of conscience for health providers has raised concern and consternation among some health professionals. The personal and professional impact of health professionals surrendering freedom of conscience and participating in actions they deem malevolent or unethical has not been adequately studied and may not be inconsequential when considering the recognized impact of other circumstances of coerced complicity. We argue that the distinction between the two ways that freedom of conscience is exercised (avoiding a perceived evil and seeking a perceived good) provides a rational basis for a principled limitation of this fundamental freedom.
