Abstract:A combination of phase change materials (PCMs) with highly conductive substances could be a promising technique to deal effectively with the relatively low thermal conductivity of PCMs. It can promote the development and commercialization of PCMs in the field of thermal management and energy storage. In this numerical study, firstly, the characterization of the PCM solidification process incorporating different metal oxide nanoparticles, namely Al2O3, ZnO, CuO, and SiO2, with volume fractions of 0–4% along with their thermophysical properties inside a triplex-tube are examined. Moreover, a comparative study at different heat transfer fluid temperatures and tubes diameters between three common thermal energy storage units, including triplex-tube, shell-and-tube with inner and outer cooling, are carried out for an identical volume of the storage unit to identify, which type of the units provides higher performance. The results show that among the considered nanoparticle-PCMs, the Al2O3-PCM reflects a higher solidification rate at a volume fraction of 2%, while at a volume fraction of 4%, the CuO-PCM possesses a lower solidification time. Moreover, the triplex-tube reflects better solidification time at any heat transfer fluid temperature and tubes diameter compared to other considered units. Finally, the Taguchi method is employed to determine the optimum solidification time. According to the Taguchi analysis, dispersing nanoparticles in PCM is the less effective parameter, and the minimum solidification time can be achieved by employing CuO-PCM 4% in a triplex-tube with the low temperature of heat transfer fluid and larger tubes diameter.

Abstract:The future of power generation is predicted to be greener with greater uptake in renewable energy which will be more intermittent and make matching demand harder. Latent thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs) could provide a solution to that problem. PCMs can store large amounts of energy in small volumes, however, the main issue is the low conductivity of PCMs, which limits the rate that energy can be stored due to the slow melting and solidification processes. In the present study, we design and optimise a flow structure-informed fin configuration for triplex-tube heat exchangers (TTHXs) that accelerates the PCM melting process to allow for faster energy storage rates. The computational fluid dynamics modelling is developed to evaluate different TTHX geometries and find the most efficient fin geometries. The results show that an optimal fin geometry can provide a 57.4 % reduction in melting time, which demonstrates that fins offer a very effective way of reducing the melting times of PCMs without taking up much volume. We also found that fins in the lower half of the PCM are more effective in reducing total melt time than fins in the upper half. It is revealed that curved fins offer better performance when compared to similar straight fins. Lastly, it is observed that horizontal or angled surfaces allow for more natural convection in TTHX. The findings can be used to inform future studies on energy storage performance improvement of PCMs.

Abstract:The introduction of highly conductive media to enhance the thermal performance of phase change materials (PCM) is an efficient method to counter the inherently low thermal conductivity of PCMs while retaining its benefits. This article reports the transient thermal performance of PCM in novel finned configurations based on Triplex Tube Heat Exchangers (TTHX). The shape, size, and placement of the constituent fins in the PCM domain are varied, and their effect on the transient melting rate of PCM is studied. Two PCM formulations, RT-82 and RT-35 are evaluated. Pockets within the encapsulation geometry wherein a vortex-like melting pattern of PCM can be facilitated, are identified as factors for expediting the melting process. The best performing configuration resulted in ∼17% (RT-82) and ∼9% (RT-25) reduction in melt duration compared to the baseline configuration. The effects of gravity conditions on the PCM melt process of the best performing and baseline configurations were also studied.

Abstract:Recently, phase change materials (PCMs) have gained great attention from engineers and researchers due to their exceptional properties for thermal energy storing, which would effectively aid in reducing carbon footprint and support the global transition of using renewable energy. The current research attempts to enhance the thermal performance of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger by means of using PCM and a modified tube design. The enthalpy-porosity method is employed for modelling the phase change. Paraffin wax is treated as PCM and poured within the annulus; the annulus comprises a circular shell and a fined wavy (trefoil-shaped) tube. In addition, copper nanoparticles are incorporated with the base PCM to enhance the thermal conductivity and melting rate. Effects of many factors, including nanoparticle concentration, the orientation of the interior wavy tube, and the fin length, were examined. Results obtained from the current model imply that Cu nanoparticles added to PCM materials improve thermal and melting properties while reducing entropy formation. The highest results (27% decrease in melting time) are obtained when a concentration of nanoparticles of 8% is used. Additionally, the fins' location is critical because fins with 45° inclination could achieve a 50% expedition in the melting process.
Enhancing PCM melting in a triple tube heat exchanger by utilizing innovative fins configurations

Abstract:Using phase-change materials (PCMs) for latent heat thermal energy storage holds great potential for addressing the mismatch between energy supply and demand. However, a key drawback in utilizing PCMs in thermal energy storage is their poor thermal conductivities, leading to prolonged energy storage and discharge durations. This study aims to enhance the thermal performance of PCMs by introducing an innovative fin shape in a triple tube heat exchanger to reduce energy storage time. Three types of extended surfaces (fins) in a triple tube heat exchanger (TTHX) were examined through numerical simulations. These fins, comprising longitudinal, tee, and plus fins, were affixed to the outer surface of the inner heat transfer fluid tube. The simulations employed comprehensive two-dimensional numerical models encompassing conduction and convection heat transfer techniques. Various design parameters, such as fin size, shape, and quantity, were systematically investigated. The findings revealed a notable enhancement in PCM thermal performance when employing the plus fins shape compared to longitudinal and tee fin configurations. Specifically, the plus fins demonstrated the shortest total melting time in comparison with the longitudinal and tee fins. Substituting longitudinal fins with plus fins resulted in a roughly 22% reduction in total melting time. The findings revealed that augmenting the number of plus fins from 4 to 6 resulted in a decrease in the overall melting duration. Furthermore, the examination suggested that elongating the fins led to a reduction in the total melting time. Specifically, when the length of the plus fins was extended from 25 to 42 mm, the total phase-change material (PCM) melting time decreased by around 33%. The primary inference drawn from the study is that the use of plus fins expedites the PCM melting process in comparison with the utilization of conventional longitudinal fins.

Abstract:Due to the potential cost saving and minimal temperature stratification, the energy storage based on phase-change materials (PCMs) can be a reliable approach for decoupling energy demand from immediate supply availability. However, due to their high heat resistance, these materials necessitate the introduction of enhancing additives, such as expanded surfaces and fins, to enable their deployment in more widespread thermal and energy storage applications. This study reports on how circular fins with staggered distribution and variable orientations can be employed for addressing the low thermal response rates in a PCM (Paraffin RT-35) triple-tube heat exchanger consisting of two heat-transfer fluids flow in opposites directions through the inner and the outer tubes. Various configurations, dimensions, and orientations of the circular fins at different flow conditions of the heat-transfer fluid were numerically examined and optimized using an experimentally validated computational fluid-dynamic model. The results show that the melting rate, compared with the base case of finless, can be improved by 88% and the heat charging rate by 34%, when the fin orientation is downward-upward along the left side and the right side of the PCM shell. The results also show that there is a benefit if longer fins with smaller thicknesses are adopted in the vertical direction of the storage unit. This benefit helps natural convection to play a greater role, resulting in higher melting rates. Changing the fins' dimensions from (thickness × length) 2 × 7.071 mm2 to 0.55 × 25.76 mm2 decreases the melting time by 22% and increases the heat charging rate by 9.6%. This study has also confirmed the importance of selecting the suitable values of Reynolds numbers and the inlet temperatures of the heat-transfer fluid for optimizing the melting enhancement potential of circular fins with downward-upward fin orientations.

Abstract:This study deals with solidification expedition of Phase Change Material (PCM) in a triplex-tube Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage System (LHTESS) by employing V-shaped fins and nanoparticles as enhancement approaches. The application of such systems is to balance the energy supply and requirement. Both approaches are used to compensate for the insignificant thermal conductivity of pure Phase Change Material and preventing the solidification process from weakening. In first enhancement approach, Response Surface Method (RSM) is used to optimize the geometric parameters of V-shaped fins to achieve best fin arrangement. The objective function of fin optimization is minimizing the Full Solidification Time (FST) to achieve the accelerated phase change process. In the second approach, SWCNT nanoparticles are dispersed to the water as Phase Change Material, and Nano-Enhanced Phase Change Material (NEPCM) is formed. Both approaches are performed separately and their results are compared. The simulation of solidification process is carried out utilizing Standard Galerkin Finite Element Method (SGFEM) along with adaptive grid refinement strategy. Results exhibited that using V-shaped fin in the system causes higher acceleration to the procedure, in comparison with nanoparticles dispersion.

Abstract:Despite their limited thermal conductivity, phase change materials (PCMs) have been extensively utilized in numerous engineering applications as a means of energy storage. Using the biomimicry method, an innovative configuration was proposed and investigated numerically. It was inspired by trees' structures aiming to improve the melting performance of triplex concentric tube heat exchangers. Based on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, this study examines the impact of integrating innovative fractal H-shaped solid fins, as well as various geometrical parameters such as the number of patterned fins, arrangement type, and stretched fins, on enhancing the PCM's performance. Compared with previous experimental work, the numerical method was validated. Through two-dimensional 2D simulations, the main objective of this work was to identify the optimal configuration that effectively maximizes the heat transfer performance during the charging process and significantly enhances the overall efficiency of an energy storage system filled with RT82. The obtained results demonstrate the positive impact of applying the bio-inspired fractal H structures to enhance the melting process. The configuration with four fin patterns achieved an improvement of 69.14 % compared with the thermal energy storage TES system equipped with uniform plate fins.

Abstract:The integration of phase change materials (PCMs) and metal foam has been widely concerned recently. To decrease non-uniformity of uniform metal foam-PCMs, adaptive metal foam arrangement strategy with increasing porosity from inside to outside has attracted widespread attention. This work conducted a symmetric simulation model of vertical thermal energy storage (TES) tube validated by experiments, for optimization of adaptive metal foam arrangement in basic design (0.94–0.94–0.94). It was followed by assessing the performance of gradient metal foam structures that included 27 cases with radial foam gradients of larger porosity on the outside and smaller porosity on the inside. Results demonstrated that a smaller difference between the inside and outside subregions resulted in better thermal performance when the same porosity of the intermediate subregion was used. More intense natural convection with stronger liquid paraffin vortex could be obtained by an adaptive arrangement. With the same average porosity, the faster phase change evolution, which was influenced by the maximum promotion of stronger natural convection, was achieved by using a larger intermediate porosity and a larger porosity difference between the inside and outside regions. The optimal strategy (0.87–0.94–0.97) could significantly shorten the melting duration as maximal as 17.15% compared with the original uniform (0.94–0.94–0.94), which contributed to efficient vertical metal foam TES systems, also as light and cost-effective as possible while also avoiding sacrificing thermal capacity.

Abstract:Abstract The heat storage technology can improve the performance of a solar thermal utilization system effectively. This work studied the effect of phase-change materials (PCMs) on thermal stratification in a heat storage tank. A 60 l sodium acetate trihydrate heat storage tank with 331.15 K phase-change temperature was designed and fabricated. A mathematical model was built to simulate the discharge process in the water tank, and the temperature distribution during the discharge process was obtained. The computational fluid dynamics model was verified by the experimental data. Furthermore, the Ri, the fill efficiency, and the MIX number were adopted to extensively analyze the performance of a heat storage tank with different positions of PCMs with the variation of flow rates. The results indicated that the distance between the isothermal surfaces of 303.15 K and 348.15 K in PCM1, PCM2, PCM3, and PCM4 were 11.75 cm, 11.13 cm, 10.52 cm, and 9.28 cm, respectively, with 9 l/min of flow velocity when t* = 0.7, showing that the thermal stratification was improved as the position of the PCMs got closer to the inlet. The PCMs’ half-life (the liquefaction rate reached 50%) was prolonged as the inlet flow rates increased. As the flow rate increased from 1 l/min to 5 l/min, the half-life of PCM4 delayed from a dimensionless time of 0.5 to a dimensionless time of 0.9. Moreover, when the flow velocity was 9 L/min, the liquefaction rate of PCM4 remained at 1. The calculated values of fill efficiency and Richardson number were higher than the experimental data slightly, while the MIX number was smaller than the experimental results. The experimental and calculated values of root mean square error (RMSE) increased with the increasing inlet flow velocity and the lowering of the positions of the PCMs.

Abstract:Phase change material (PCM) is considered as one of the most effective thermal energy storage (TES) systems to balance energy supply and demand. A key challenge in designing efficient PCM-based TES systems lies in the enhancement of heat transmission during phase transition. This study numerically examines the privilege of employing twisted-fin arrays inside a shell-and-tube latent heat storage unit to improve the solidification performance. The presence of twisted fins contributes to the dominating role of heat conduction by their curved shapes, which restricts the role of natural convection but largely aids the overall heat transfer process during solidification. The heat discharge rate of twisted-fin configuration is increased by ∼14% and ∼55% compared to straight fin and no fin configurations—leading to a reduction in the solidification duration by∼13% and ∼35%, respectively. The solidification front at various times has also been assessed through a detailed parametric study over the fin height, fin pitch number, and fin thickness. Over the range of values assumed, the fin height is the most dominant parameter- increasing the heat retrieval rate from 10.0W to 11.4W and decreasing the discharge time from above 3600s to 2880s by varying the fin height from 2.5mm to 7.5mm.

Abstract:Many phase change materials exhibit low thermal conductivity, leading to incomplete melting and solidification processes. To address this issue, researchers have numerically explored the integration of alumina nanoparticles (Al 2 O 3 ) with paraffin (RT82), a phase change material with a solidification temperature of 65 °C, in a triplex-tube heat exchanger. The phase change material model with internal longitudinal fins employed the both-sides freezing technique and was conducted using Ansys Fluent software, employing the enthalpy-porosity method within a finite-volume framework to model the phase change material behavior during both melting and solidification phases. This methodology aims to significantly improve the thermal performance of thermal energy storage systems by enhancing heat transfer efficiency within the phase change material (PCM), thereby ensuring more effective utilization of stored thermal energy. The numerical findings show that the pure PCM completely solidified in 780 min. By dispersing 1 %, 4 %, 7 %, and 10 % of Al 2 O 3 in the PCM, thermal conductivity improved by 3 %, 12.5 %, 22.5 %, and 32.5 %, respectively. Additionally, the inclusion of nano-PCM reduced the solidification time. This research also compares the overall energy release in two different situations: PCM with and without nanoparticles. The computer-generated simulation results closely correlated with the practical experimentation results.

Abstract:Low-thermal-conductivity phase-change materials (PCMs) are often hybridized with high-thermal-conductivity metal matrices to achieve improved heat-transfer performance in latent-heat thermal-energy-storage (LHTES) applications. Owing to recent developments in additive-manufacturing technology that allow any complicated topology to be manufactured with ease, triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) have gained considerable attention. These nature-inspired TPMS structures have already shown promising results in a variety of applications. TPMS structures can be developed in either sheet or solid configurations, both of which exhibit distinct architectures. Herein, a numerical study is presented whereby an organic PCM (docosane) is hybridized with two TPMS structures, namely, gyroids and I-graph-and-wrapped-packages (IWPs) in both sheet and solid configurations. The effective thermal conductivity of each resulting TPMS-PCM composite was calculated using steady-state simulations. Moreover, transient simulations were conducted under isothermal and isoflux conditions to assess the structures' heat-transfer performance. The obtained results were compared with those obtained using PCM only, and the incorporation of gyroid and IWP structures in both sheet and solid configurations was found to significantly improve the PCM's heat-transfer performance. For isothermal case under pure conduction, sheet-based configurations outperformed the solid-based ones with IWP sheet configuration being the best configuration with a PCM melting time of 118 s. However, upon taking buoyancy into account, IWP solid showed best performance with a PCM melting time of 108 s. Furthermore, the performance of each TPMS-PCM composite was found to depend on the type of structure incorporated into it and the value of the applied boundary condition. For isoflux case, IWP sheet showed the best performance in terms of temperature homogeneity in PCM domain as compared to the rest of the TPMS structures under both pure conduction case and the case with buoyancy effects. The PCM melting time in isoflux case was not found to have a strong dependence on TPMS structure type. In both isothermal and isoflux cases, Gyroid solid based TPMS-PCM composite showed the least performance. Moreover, the effects of PCM buoyancy are more pronounced in solid configurations than the sheet ones. Therefore, this study may serve as a design guideline to select appropriate TPMS configuration based on the applied boundary conditions/application.

Effects of segmentation in composite phase change material on melting/solidification performance of triplex‐tube thermal energy storage systems

Abstract:In this work, a numerical evaluation of the melting/solidification performance of phase change material (PCM) filled inside a triplex‐tube latent heat storage unit has been carried out. To enhance the melting/solidification performance, the porous Cu metal foam (MF) was embedded inside PCM (termed as composite PCM). Alternative segments of pure PCM and composite PCM have been allocated in such a way that both the pure PCM and composite PCM occupy the equal annular area (i.e., equal volumes). Influence of increasing number of segments was delineated on the melting/solidification rate, complete melting time, and thermal energy storage/recovery enhancement. The comparisons were drawn with reference to the model having two segments of PCM and composite PCM. The results show that the model containing 64 segments with alternate allocations of PCM and composite PCM has a faster melting/solidification rate than other models. With 32 alternate segments of MF, the full melting/solidification time reduced by 23%/77% with respect to the case with one segment of MF only. The melting/solidification performance gets saturated beyond 32 segments (M‐5) and negligible variation (only ~1%) in the thermal performance was noticed upon further segmentation. Finally, the model M‐5 proved as the best model considering the aspects of augmented melting/solidification rate and associated complexities. Moreover, the heterogeneity of MF applied in 32‐segment model confirmed that the anisotropic MF results in an increased melting rate and leads over other random isotropic distributions of MF.

Thermal performance augmentation of honeycomb metal matrix embedded phase change material in shell-tube latent heat storage unit

Abstract:Due to the global warming challenge, there is a transition from the utilization of fossil fuels to harvesting new and renewable energy sources globally. Solar energy, being the infinite source with easy accessibility, leads the race among other allied sources. However intermittent nature of it demands an efficient thermal energy storage system. In the present experimental study, an innovative heat transfer augmentation technique i.e. aluminium honeycomb grill and fine mesh embedded in PCM is demonstrated. Both visualization of PCM melt fraction and capture of temperature contour complemented each other to identify the honeycomb version (HC-LHSU) as substantially better (43 % improvement in charge period) than the base model (BM-LHSU). On the other side, due to fine pores (porosity = 95 %), the fine meshmodel (FM-LHSU) yielded poorer results than BM-LHSU. Even the temperature gradient that exists during the charge or discharge period is gauged and recognized HC-LHSU as the best, followed by BM-LHSU and FM-LHSU. Since the onset of the phase transition zone reflects heat storage rate, the same is identified, and the charge period (sensible heat + latent heat) assessed to be 8000 s, 10000 s, and 12,000 s for HC-LHSU, BM-LHSU, and FM-LHSU, respectively. Further, an improvement in the average Nusselt number by 74 % and 67 % during the charge and discharge period respectively compared to the base model justified the honeycomb grill's role in augmenting the energy storage unit's performance.

Experimental and numerical analysis of a phase change material-based shell-and-tube heat exchanger for cold thermal energy storage

Abstract:This work experimentally and numerically investigates the thermal performance of a vertical shell-and-tube heat exchanger, filled with a biological phase change material (PCM), linked to a water-chiller system for cold thermal energy storage. The system provides the cooling service to a 150 m 2 single-family house. An experimental apparatus has been designed to collect the PCM temperature data through the employment of multiple thermocouples located at different heights of the heat exchanger. Starting from the experiment, a comprehensive 3D numerical model of the system has been developed based on the enthalpy-porosity method using COMSOL Multiphysics®. The PCM temperature profiles and the evolution of the solid-liquid interface location at various time instants are used as performance indicators of the model reliability and accuracy. The numerical agreement with the experimental findings is proved using statistical indices, e.g. , maximum values of mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) equal to 1.18 °C and 1.33 °C, respectively, with regards to central thermocouples. The results reveal that natural convection highly affects the PCM charging/discharging processes, as proved by the PCM liquid fraction, which moves from full to 51 %, between two levels spaced by 0.78 m. The developed 3D model, based on the enthalpy-porosity method, allows to consider boundary conditions variability with both angle and height, which are not usually covered by simplified 2D models. Hence, this model confirms that only 39 % of the PCM mass experiences the complete phase change process, proving that the current design does not allow the PCM to totally exploit the thermal storage potential, thereby making optimization pivotal and challenging.

Abstract:Researchers are exploring innovative solutions for thermal energy storage to address the challenges posed by intermittent renewable sources, enhance energy efficiency, and contribute to the global shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy practices. In the pursuit of an optimal system to improve the heat release/absorption efficiency of phase change materials (PCMs), a unique shell and tube latent heat storage system with four rectangular fins was designed. The melting and solidification behaviors of the material in this device were examined by manipulating the tube's position within the shell and fins around the tube. Six different cases were considered such as case A (tube in the center of the shell), case B (tube at the top of the shell), case C (tube at the bottom of the shell), case D (tube in the center of the shell with fins on its sides), case E (tube at the top of the shell with fins located in its bottom section), and case F (tube at the bottom of the shell with fins located in its top section). Cases D and E were the best options for absorbing and releasing heat in the shortest time. However, it should be noted that case F was faster during the melting process and dropped behind in the final stages. The authors proposed that if achieving a balanced result without incurring additional costs is essential, case D is a suitable option since it offers reasonable performance in melting and solidification processes. However, suppose researchers and developers of energy storage systems are seeking higher performances where heat absorption and release occur much more rapidly. In that case, it is suggested to construct one of the cases, E or F , and implement a rotational mechanism to enable access to the other case. Based on the outcomes, cases D and F needed 6235 s and 7552 s, respectively, to fully melt. While all cases even required more than 3 h to solidify 80 % of the PCM. The complete melting speed of Case F is 21.12 % faster than that of Case D . Additionally, the time required for 50 % solidification is 14.79 % faster for Case E compared to Case D . During 3 h, this system could absorb 1172 kJ of energy (cases D and F ) and release 893 kJ of energy (cases D and E ).

Enhancement of PCMs performance using nano-particles in horizontal triple-series shell-and-tube heat exchangers: A numerical study

Abstract:Integrating Phase Change Materials (PCMs) as a storage system into a parabolic trough collector (PTC) setup can enhance energy security. However, PCMs have a drawback in terms of their low conductivity. To improve reliability, a cascaded array is used for the storage system. The thermal performance of three series shell and tube heat exchangers filled with PCM1 (64–68 °C), PCM2 (57–60 °C) and PCM3 (46–48 °C) during the charging process is evaluated. A 2D simulation model is developed, and 11 computational cases are considered. Firstly, results of utilizing two different designs of heat exchangers are analyzed. The effective geometry is chosen to validate previous experimental findings, and the range of percentage variation is 1.7 to 10.97 %. To optimize the thermal performance of the storage system for residential applications, two distinct nanoparticles of Al 2 O 3 and GNPs are employed with maximum volume fractions of 10 and 3 %, respectively. Findings reveal that the immersion of 10 % Al 2 O 3 accelerates the melting time of PCMs 1, 2, and 3 by 38, 31.6, and 31.6 %, respectively. Also, dispersion of 3 vol% of GNPs shortens the melting time up to 78.1 %. Meanwhile, the PCM's effective average temperature rises the most at this volume fraction, reaching 93.4 °C. On the other hand, it is observed that a higher concentration of Al 2 O 3 (10 vol%) declines the energy and exergy storage of the system by 40.6 and 39.8 %, respectively. Conversely, increasing GNP volume fraction to 2.5 % enhances the system's energy and exergy by 21.1 and 62.9 %, respectively. These advancements enhance the storage system's thermal performance, broadening its potential applications.

Abstract:The model of the energy storage tank based on multiple tubes with phase change material was established. The influence of the tube circle diameter and the inner annulus temperature on the heat storage performance of the tube bundle in the concentric circle was studied by numerical simulation. The results show that the increase of the tube circle diameter (Ф) can significantly improve the heat storage efficiency, and the increase in inner wall temperature (Tw) can make the heat storage time significantly shorter, but with the tube circle diameter (Φ) increases, the effect of Tw on shortening the heat storage time is gradually weakened. In addition, the dimensionless criterion equation of the liquid fraction function (f) at different tube circle diameters is presented too. Furthermore, based on the variation of the mean Nu with Fo, the heat transfer mechanism of the melting process of the PCM can be divided into four stages: (1) heat conduction dominates stage; (2) natural convection dominates stage; (3) natural convection begins to transform into heat conduction stage; and (4) heat conduction dominates again.

Abstract:This paper aims to improve the heat storage system's performance by using multiple phase change materials (PCMs). A heat storage device is designed with multiple PCMs firstly. The heat storage device consists of three identical shell-tube phase change thermal storage units. The numerical method is developed and verified experimentally. Two parameters, namely the latent heat utilization of PCM (ω) and the heat transfer effectiveness of heat storage device (ε), are introduced to evaluate the performance of energy storage and the heat exchange of the heat storage system with multiple PCMs. The effects of factors on ω and ε are studied, including the thermal conductivity, latent heat and melting temperature difference of PCMs, and the inlet velocity and temperature of heat transfer fluid. Results indicate that increasing the inlet velocity and temperature of HTF can greatly improve ω, but reduce ε. Increasing the thermal conductivity of PCM can obviously improve ω, but it has little effect on improving ε. Multiple PCMs with suitable melting temperature difference can improve both ω and ε. In practice, multiple PCMs can be associated with the above methods to improve the overall performance of the phase change thermal storage system. This research is used to optimize the design of phase change thermal storage device and improve its performance.
