Abstract:3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) ceramics are promising restorative materials being extensively used for fabricating dental prosthodontics. However, peri-implant inflammation and the severe abrasive wear on occlusive natural teeth are two critical problems in the clinical application of zirconia dentures. The paper aims to improve the antibacterial and tribological performance of 3Y-TZP ceramics through laser surface texturing. Three types of surface textures, including micro-honeycombs, micro-composite grids, and micro-grooves, were fabricated onto the zirconia specimens. The effects of different microtextures on the surface behaviors, including wettability, bacteria adhesion, and wear behavior, of 3Y-TZP ceramics were rigorously studied. The results indicate that the introduction of microtextures can change the solid-liquid contact of the zirconia surface, thus affecting its wettability. Wettability is a decisive factor that determinines the antibacterial behavior of textured zirconia ceramics. A hydrophobic surface is more conducive to inhibiting the adhesion, extension, reproduction of bacteria and thus achieves a superior antibacterial performance. The examined microtextures yield the improvement of wear resistance for the zirconia ceramics, but their performances depend on the texture density and the structural strength. The results obtained can provide technical guidance for the design and application of microtextures in the restorative dental fields.

Abstract:The future of manufacturing applications in three-dimensional (3D) printing depends on the improvement and the development of materials suitable for 3D printing technology. This study aims to develop an applicable and convenient protocol for light-curing resin used in 3D industry, which could enhance antibacterial and mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin through the combination of nano-fillers of surface modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) and micro-fillers of polyetheretherketone (PEEK). PMMA-based composite resins with various additions of TiO2 and PEEK were prepared and submitted to characterizations including mechanical properties, distribution of the fillers (TiO2 or/and PEEK) on the fractured surface, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and blood compatibility assessment. These results indicated that the reinforced composite resins of PMMA (TiO2-1%-PEEK-1%) possessed the most optimized properties compared to the other groups. In addition, we found the addition of 1% of TiO2 would be an effective amount to enhance both mechanical and antibacterial properties for PMMA composite resin. Furthermore, the model printed by PMMA (TiO2-1%-PEEK-1%) composite resin showed a smooth surface and a precise resolution, indicating this functional dental restoration material would be a suitable light-curing resin in 3D industry.

Abstract:Zirconia (ZrO2) ceramics have potential applications in the field of oral medicine owing to their desirable mechanical properties, biocompatibility, chemical stability, and aesthetic properties. To realize clinical applications, ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3 bioceramics for all-ceramic dental implants were prepared using vat photopolymerization 3D printing technology, and their process optimization, microstructure, mechanics, tribology, and biological properties were studied. The results indicate that when the sintering temperature and holding time are 1600 °C and 3 h, respectively, the density of ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3 bioceramics reaches 98.79%, and its Vickers hardness, compressive strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness also reach their maximum values. Furthermore, the in vitro simulated oral environment wear tests showed that artificial saliva provides a lubricating effect on ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3 bioceramics and improves wear resistance. The biosafety of ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3 bioceramics was evaluated and ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3 had no obvious cytotoxicity and promoted cell proliferation, growth, and adhesion. In addition, its surface has appropriate roughness and good wettability. In conclusion, ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3 bioceramics prepared by vat photopolymerization are promising biomaterials with broad application prospects in dental restoration.
Mechanical properties and microstructure of PMMA-ZrO2 nanocomposites for dental CAD/CAM

Abstract:A novel PMMA-ZrO2 composite (PZC) was prepared by resin infiltrated to ceramic method. The composite mechanical properties were evaluated and correlated to its microstructure. Partially sintered zirconia ceramics (PSZC) were made by isostatic pressing and partially sintering. Subsequently, the PZC was prepared by vacuum infiltrating prepolymerized MMA into PSZC, followed by in-situ polymerization. When PSZG-70% was used as the matrix, the bending strength, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness of the prepared composite i.e PZC-70% were 202.56 +/- 12.09 MPa, 58.71 +/- 3.98 GPa, and 4.60 +/- 0.26 MPa.m(1/2), corresponding to 25.69%, 23.31%, and 169.01% improvement, respectively, in comparison with the control matrix. Among them, the fracture toughness improvement was the most prominent. According to SEM images of the fracture surfaces, each pore of zirconia skeleton was filled by organic resin contributing to the bending strength improvement. These weak interfaces between zirconia skeleton and organic resin absorbed energy and terminated the growth of microcracks which might be responsible for significant improvement in fracture toughness. This PZC material is anticipated to be a new member of the dental CAD/CAM family.

Abstract:Zirconia ceramic is an ideal dental restoration material owing to its good biocompatibility, superior physical behaviors, and excellent aesthetic properties. However, peri-implant inflammation and excessive occlusal surface wear are critical issues that hinder the clinical application of zirconia ceramic dentures. The surface texturing technique is an unique means to improve the surface properties of products, such as biocompatibility. This paper provides a detailed overview of the definition and development of surface texturing techniques. A comprehensive review is conducted on the machining mechanisms and features of common texture preparation techniques, such as laser texturing and ultrasonic vibration texturing. The mechanisms of surface textures on the tribological behaviors, wettability, and antibacterial behaviors of specimens such as restorations are deeply discussed. The limitations of current studies on surface texturing techniques of dental zirconia ceramics and the future prospects are outlined. The review can help scientists improve the currently available cost-effective texture preparation process and develop high-performance denture restorations.

Abstract:Weak shear bond strength (SBS) has always been a challenge for clinical bonding of 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP). With the development of additive manufacturing technology, vat photopolymerization (VPP) is an alternative that allows zirconia to form precise complex structures and achieve bionic structure molding based on the natural advantages of different organisms in relation to biological structure, microstructure, and mechanical behavior. As report goes, the toe structure of tree frog can effectively achieve friction enhancement on humid and flooded surfaces. In this paper, we present a new type of 3Y-TZP material loaded with tree-frog bionic structures via VPP additive manufacturing to improve SBS between resin cement and 3Y-TZP for clinical requirements. And flexural strength, finite element analysis and accuracy analysis of bio-inspired 3Y-TZP is carried out to verify its feasibility of clinical application. The SBS of the bio-inspired group with 250 μm width and 250 μm height reached a maximum of 22.7 ± 1.3 MPa before hydrothermal aging, the flexural strength of the bio-inspired group with 250 μm width and 150 μm height decreased the least, reaching 825 ± 30 MPa, and the accuracy analysis of the central-incisor veneer restoration loaded with the bionic structures showed that the average deviation value was 0.033 ± 0.036 mm. This study has found that these bionic structures can effectively improve the SBS of the interface between zirconia and resin cement, while flexural strength and accuracy can also meet requirements of clinical dental application.

Abstract:Dental restorative materials with high mechanical properties and biocompatible performances are promising. In this work, polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network materials (PICNs) were fabricated via infiltrating polymerizable monomers into porous ceramic networks and incorporated with hydroxyapatite nano-powders. Our results revealed that the flexural strength can be enhanced up to 157.32 MPa, and elastic modulus and Vickers hardness can be achieved up to 19.4 and 1.31 GPa, respectively, which are comparable with the commercial computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) blocks. Additionally, the adhesion and spreading of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) on the surface of such materials can be improved by adding hydroxyapatite, which results in good biocompatibility. Such PICNs are potential applicants for their application in the dental restoration.
High-performance integrated manufacturing of a 3Y-TZP ceramic crown through viscoelastic paste-based vat photopolymerization with a conformal contactless support

Abstract:Ceramic vat photopolymerization has been one of the promising three-dimensional printing technologies for personalized zirconia crown with high dimensional accuracy and surface topography. However, insufficient material stability and complex procedure about auxiliary supports limit the application based on low viscosity slurry. In this work, we developed a photocurable ceramic paste, in which the high static viscosity and high yield stress characteristics allowed it to exhibit sufficient anti-settling and self-supporting capabilities. The rheological characteristics of the as prepared paste were measured by stress-controlled rheometer, and conformal contactless support was designed including top conformal structure without contact with the crown and appropriate empty layer. The 3D precision of crown was evaluated by laser scanning confocal microscope and optical surface scanner. In addition, mechanical properties and biocompatibility of sintered samples were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that the yield stress of the ceramic paste approached around 600 Pa, and integrate morphology at the bottom of the crown with the contactless supported zone was observed. 3D deviation between the printed crown scan data and the reference model was reduced within the range of 40–70 μm. Finally, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the sintered zirconia ceramics reached 1117 MPa and 7.76 MPa⋅m 1/2 , respectively, as well as good biocompatibility by the lack of cytotoxicity and hemolytic reaction. The results indicate an important practical significance for the development of vat photopolymerization printing technology of viscoelastic paste and conformal contactless support strategy to realize the integrated manufacturing of ceramic crowns.

Abstract:Different techniques can be used to design and manufacture a full-arch, implant-supported prosthesis, and different materials can be chosen for its production, each with its advantages and limitations. One of the possibilities provided by digital tools is their ability to maintain low costs to give more patients the chance to choose this commonly expensive treatment. The present work aims to present a protocol for the realization of full-arch, implant-fixed complete dentures (IFCDs) in monolithic zirconia and titanium. When the analogic master model is obtained, it is scanned to perform the digital wax-up, and the two parts of the prosthesis—a bar in titanium and an aesthetic component in monolithic zirconia—are milled. The dental team must then verify the precision of the milled components on the master model, so that they can be cemented together and delivered to the patient. This technique offers different advantages, in terms of cost sustainability, minimal wear risk for the prosthesis and its antagonists, and ease of re-intervening in the case of complications. The main limitations of the technique may lie in the aesthetic needs of the patient, because of the relatively poor aesthetic performance of monolithic zirconia and the absence of a pink orthopedic component.
3D-printed strong hybrid materials with low shrinkage for dental restoration

Abstract:<p>Flowable photocurable resins can be printed effectively by stereolithographic 3D printing for dental applications; however, the 3D-printed objects' mechanical properties cannot meet the requirements for the dental restorative materials. In this study, a strong customized crown for tooth repair was first prepared via direct ink writing 3D printing from a high-viscosity hybrid paste of acrylic monomer and multi-scale inorganic particles. The results showed that the hybrid resin-based composites (RBCs) could be printed successfully and smoothly through a metal nozzle with a gradually shrinking channel. The theoretical simulation of finite element methods was consistent with the experiment results. The printed objects were preliminarily cured incrementally and exhibited a low shrinkage ratio of only 2.58±0.11%. The printed samples with criss-crossed layers by interrupting crack propagation exhibited superior mechanical properties (a flexural strength of 120.8±4.1 MPa and a compressive strength of 323.6±5.6 MPa) than their traditional molding counterparts. Since the deposited layers exhibited improved resistance to bending forces, the flexural strength of the sample with a print orientation in adjacent layers (45–135°) even reached 145.5±8.7 MPa. The RBCs were successfully used to print strong, high-performance and biocompatibility dental crowns, expected to provide a customized component for the clinical restoration of teeth.</p>

Abstract:Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing technology is an advanced technology with great advantages and prospects in the field of dental repair that needs personalization and high precision. In this work, we tried to optimize the printing parameters, including laser power, scanning space, and layer thickness, from the dimension accuracy, warpage, and surface quality of the prepared samples and focus on the research and optimization of the debinding process in the heat treatment process. Starting from dimensional accuracy, warpage and surface quality, the optimal combination of printing parameters was 160 mW laser power, 0.07 mm scanning spacing and the ratio of layer thickness (Lt) to cured depth (Cd) was 1/3. In addition, it was found that the debinding atmosphere had a significant impact on the debinding effect of zirconia green body. The process of debinding in the nitrogen atmosphere and decarbonizing in the air atmosphere was finally adopted, which reduced the pyrolysis rate of organic matter, avoided the defects such as cracking of green body and bulging of sintered body, and improved the performance of ceramic samples. It was worth emphasizing that Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the ZrO2 dental ceramics were 13.67 ± 0.72 GPa, 820 ± 59 MPa and 5.89 ± 0.63 MPa m1/2, respectively, and had good biocompatibility. The research results could provide some useful guidance for the selection of SLA printing parameters and the optimization of the heat treatment process.

A TMPS-designed personalized mandibular scaffolds with optimized SLA parameters and mechanical properties

Abstract:With the rapid development of 3D printing technology, porous titanium scaffolds have provided a new restoration method to repair bone defects. Compared with the traditional body-centered cubic (bcc) dot matrix structure with a simple arrangement and repetitive structure, the topology-driven properties of triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) can offer a continuous surface and smooth curvature, an excellent platform for cell proliferation. In this study, we used reverse engineering techniques to model the mandible. Sheet and solid networks of gyroid structure, the most common type of TPMS, were selected for porous design and then molded using metal 3D printing technology. At the same time, the surface treatment parameters of sandblasted, large-grit, and acid-etched (SLA) were optimized by orthogonal experimental design. Then, the optimized SLA parameter was used to treat the gyroid with 70% porosity. The result showed that reverse engineering reconstructed the TPMS-based mandibular model had good formability. Furthermore, the best surface morphology, wettability, and roughness were obtained for 3D printed Ti6Al4V under the treatment of 80 mesh Al 2 O 3 , blasting distances of 4 cm, and a 1:1:2 acid ratio. Moreover, the mechanical properties of Sheet-Gyroid and Solid-Gyroid were significantly different at 70% porosity. The porosity of the scaffolds was close to the design porosity after SLA treatment. However, no significant changes were found in its mechanical properties, all matching the mandible’s mechanical properties to meet the implantation conditions.

Abstract:Zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramic has potential dental restoration and repair applications due to its high mechanical strength, toughness, wear resistance, chemical durability, and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, there is a great deal of crack initiation caused by stress accumulation and also material wastage after computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing of ZTA ceramics in conventional clinical processing. In this study, we prepared a ZTA green compact using Stereolithography (SLA) technology followed by sintering at high temperatures ranging between 1450 °C and 1650 °C. The microstructures, mechanical properties, friction and wear performance, and cytotoxicity of the ZTA ceramic were investigated. The results indicate that all ZTA samples were composed of α-Al 2 O 3 , m-ZrO 2 , and t-ZrO 2 phases before and after sintering. With increasing sintering temperatures from 1450 °C to 1650 °C, the density, mechanical properties, hardness, and wear performance of the ZTA samples were gradually improved. The ZTA sample sintered at 1650 °C with a relative density of 96.65% showed the best mechanical performance, with a flexural strength of 572.0 MPa, a Vickers hardness of 16.2 GPa, and a fracture toughness of 7.4 MPa m 1/2 . The sintered ZTA sample exhibited a good cell viability toward MC3T3-E1 cells.
A systematic review of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about malaria among the South Asian population

Abstract:Background Malaria is one of the deadliest mosquito-borne diseases in the world. More than 80% of the total populations are at risk of malaria in the 22 countries in Asia and the Pacific. South Asia alone is home to an estimated 1.4 billion people at risk of contracting malaria. Despite the remarkable progress in reducing the burden of malaria, evidence of the disease based on knowledge of the social and cultural contexts from a South Asian perspective is limited. Our objective was to understand the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about malaria in South Asian communities. Methodology We conducted a systematic literature review, searching six databases, between 1990 and 2015, focusing on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about malaria in South Asia. Databases were searched using both ‘free terms’ and ‘index terms’ funnelled using Boolean operators and truncations. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were set, and included papers were scrutinised, employing a critical appraisal tool to find the best available evidences to support the study purpose. Results and discussion Evidence from 32 articles (26 quantitative, four qualitative and two mixed methods). General knowledge and awareness of the disease, its transmission, and control and preventative measures were generally found to be lacking amongst both the general public and healthcare professionals. In addition, the study shows that poor socio-economic factors – including limited access to services due to poor/limited availability – and issues of affordability are considered as major risk factors. Conclusion This review suggests the importance of increasing health awareness, mobilising the local or community healthcare professionals, for prevention as well as early detection and effective treatment of malaria among people who are at risk. Malaria is also a disease associated with poverty and socio-cultural factors; therefore, strong political will, wider partnerships between health and non-health sectors, and strengthening health systems’ technical and managerial capabilities at all level of primary healthcare systems, is inevitable.

Abstract:A 3-D printing method to produce dental prostheses of complex shapes from a commercial, photocurable resin-ceramic slurry is developed and optimized. The microstructure, mechanical properties and wear behavior of the resulting material are evaluated and compared with a conventional/control sample and other ceramic-polymer dental composites. Commercial resin-ceramic dental slurries can be successfully extruded and appropriately photocured in a low cost 3-D printing system to produce cost-efficient complex dental parts that could be used in indirect restorations. The printing process does not appreciably introduce defects in the material and the 3-D printed composites exhibit mechanical properties (hardness, elastic modulus) and wear resistance comparable to the control material and analogous, conventional dental composites. The main wear mechanisms under sliding contact against a hard antagonist are plastic deformation at the asperity level and ceramic particle pull-out due to filler/matrix interfacial weakness.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of the 3D printed micro-structured surfaces on the bond strength of zirconia to resin cement.METHODS: Zirconia specimens were divided into five groups based on manufacturing technique and surface preparation: (1) milled zirconia (M group); (2) milled zirconia airborne abraded (MA group); (3) printed zirconia (M group); (4) printed zirconia airborne abraded (PA group); and (5) printed zirconia with micro-structured surface (PM group). The surface morphology, cross-sectional morphology, and elemental composition were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Surface roughness was measured using a laser scanning confocal microscope (SLCM). Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured using a universal testing machine after bonding resin cement (n = 10). The failure modes of the bonded fracture interfaces were observed and counted using a stereomicroscope and a SEM. In addition, boundary dimensional accuracy (n = 10) and micro-structural dimensional accuracy (n = 20) of printed zirconia specimens with micro-structured surfaces were measured using digital calipers and Fiji software. The crystalline phase changes before and after surface treatment were investigated using X-ray diffractometry. Data was analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc tests (α = 0.05).RESULT: The surface micro-structures of the PM group had regular morphology and no obvious defects. The surface roughness results showed that the PM group had higher Sa (42.21±1.38 um) and Ra (21.25±1.80 um) values than the other four groups (p < 0.001). The SBS test showed that the bond strength of the PM group reached 11.23 ± 0.66 MPa, which was 55.97% (p < 0.001) higher than that of the P group (7.20 ± 1.14 MPa). The boundary dimensional accuracy of the PM group was proficient (diameter: 99.63 ± 0.31%, thickness: 98.05 ± 1.12%), and the actual fabrication dimensions of the hexagonal micro-structures reached 77.45%-80.01% of the original design. The micro-structured surface did not affect the crystalline phase of zirconia.CONCLUSIONS: The current study illustrates that 3D-printed microstructured surfaces effectively improve the bond strength of zirconia to resin cements.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: With the advantage of 3D printing, this study provides a new idea for improving the bonding properties of zirconia.

Abstract:In this study, we propose an integrated approach which combines 3D printing and liquid precursor infiltration together to prepare alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) composite. Controllable manipulation of the microstructure of the composite could be realized through different infiltration times and sintering temperature. The 3D-printed ATZ with infiltration and post-CIP sintered at 1550 °C possesses the highest relative density (98.11%), hardness (12.65 ± 0.24 GPa) and fracture toughness (6.42 ± 0.33 MPa m1/2). The rates of increase in the performance compared with the undoped zirconia sintered at 1550 °C are 1.8%, 8.4% and 34.6%, respectively. The dominated toughening mechanism of ATZ could be attributed to the effect of Al2O3 inclusion on crack deflection and energy absorption. The 3D-printed ATZ sample with infiltration followed by CIP sintered at 1550 °C shows the lowest aging rate and the lowest phase transformation depth compared with 3Y-TZP (Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal). Our integrated approach could not only realize the complex and ultrafine shape free of molds, but also suppress the low temperature aging behavior of dental implants, which has baffled dentists for a long time.
Preparation and biological evaluation of ZrO2 all-ceramic teeth by DLP technology

Abstract:Personalized zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) all-ceramic teeth are expected to be widely used in the field of oral restoration. Here, ZrO2 all-ceramic teeth were fabricated for biological engineering by photosensitive resin based digital light processing (DLP) technology. When sintered at 1500 °C for 3 h, dense ZrO2 ceramics were obtained with relative density of 98.02 ± 0.32%, Vickers hardness of 12.62 ± 0.15 GPa and fracture toughness of 6.11 ± 0.36 MPa∙m1/2, which were close to those of the ZrO2 ceramics prepared by dry pressing. To confirm whether the prepared ZrO2 ceramics possessed good biosafety, in vitro biological experiments were further performed with rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) and preferable cell attachment was observed at the initial stages. Results illustrated that the compositions with cytotoxicity in green samples were completely decomposed after debinding and sintering process, and the ZrO2 ceramics could provide an ideal biocompatible environment for mesenchymal stem cells. This study shows that ZrO2 all-ceramic teeth with personalized structure prepared by DLP technology have good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, exhibiting strong potential in the field of oral restoration.

Abstract:Veneered zirconia ceramics are widely used for dental restorations. However, the relatively poor bonding strength between the ceramic core and veneer porcelain remains a common problem in clinical applications. To address this issue, this study focused on enhancing the core–veneer bond strength of zirconia restorations through the implementation of surface textures using digital light processing (DLP) technology. The light intensity was precisely tuned to optimize mechanical strength and minimize light scattering. Subsequently, hexagonal or square grids were printed on the surface of the zirconia ceramic core. Following veneering procedures, the shear bond strength (SBS) test was conducted using a universal testing machine. Dates were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the least significant difference (LSD) test. Furthermore, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to examine the failure modes and observe the cross-sectional structures, respectively. The results indicated that the presence of a 0.09 mm high hexagon grid led to a significant 21% increase in the SBS value. However, grids with heights of 0.2 and 0.3 mm showed less improvement, owing to the formation of large defects at the interface during the fusion process. This study demonstrated the potential of DLP technology in preparing zirconia ceramics with complex structures and high mechanical strength, thereby offering promising solutions for overcoming challenges associated with dental applications.
