Abstract:Purpose - This paper aims to provide a 3D finite element (FE) model for dynamic simulation of cutterhead and soil interaction in slurry shield tunneling. Design/methodology/approach - Dynamic numerical simulation of excavation process is realized by combined use of submodeling method and arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALF) approach. The model size reduction, soil mesh refinement and stress state initialization are fulfilled by submodeling. The large soil deformations, failures and flows are handled by ALE approach. Computation time is reduced by parallel domain decomposition with recursive coordinate bisection method. Validation of the proposed approach is achieved by comparing the numerical results with monitored data from the model test for Yangtze River tunneling project. Findings - The proposed approach proves to be an effective technique to simulate the cutterhead and soil interaction dynamically in tunnel excavation. Comparative study on the effect of mesh density indicates the requirement of relative mesh refinement. Exploration of the parallel computing performance points out the best decomposed domain for the simulation. Parametric study on the effect of rotary speed and investigation on soil properties presents the significant factors for torque. Practical implications - The proposed numerical model can help in the development process of reduced-scale model test, as well as design and selection of slurry shield machines. Originality/value - The originality comes from the need to evaluate the excavation performance of slurry shield machine in tunneling project. This contribution provides a 3D numerical approach, which takes into account the stress state in soil and dynamic contact effects between soil and cutterhead. In this work, large deformation in soil is handled. Besides, soil failures and flows are captured.

Abstract:Visualized supervision and control system for shield tunnel boring machine was developed, according to the request of the upper workstation. The hardware design and software structure were introduced. Specially, logical judgment of working state and static and dynamic prediction model of earth surface level variation were given and analyzed. The solutions to avoid land surface sedimentation accruing were brought forward: ensuring the working state of the programs precisely at any time according to running state of the tunneling machine with using logical judgment formula; forecasting the quantities of the surface sedimentation comparatively exactly by evaluating on-line and visualized supervision means. It is testified that the system can supervise multi-subject, can forecast exactly, as well as can realize visualized evaluation and prediction on line.

Abstract:Large infrastructures involving underground engineering like the underground powerhouse caverns constitute multi-medium, complicated and interaction systems, which require geotechnical data management, parametric model construction, optimal design alternatives, and real-time safety assessment. However, even though the data needed for numerical analysis is recorded in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) parametric models, the transformation of geometric characteristics between BIM and numerical models is cumbersome. Therefore, an automatic numerical simulation analysis framework was proposed, which can not only convert 3D parametric structural geometry model by indirect method, but also realize automatic pre-treatment and analysis, such as mechanical properties definition, boundary conditions assignment and mesh generation. In this study, the digital model of underground powerhouse caverns accompanying with cavern support system could be constructed automatically via secondary development on CATIA software. Reorganized borehole logs at geological profiles accompanying with topographic-geologic map are also used to define the 3D subsoil model. Python codes are programmed for pre-treatment of numerical model to enhance the calculation efficiency and alleviate the manual interventions by linking differ-format data files. Furthermore, a case study of Suki Kinari underground powerhouse caverns was exemplified the advantages of this framework in terms of modeling and pre-treatment efficiency, and error-free geometric information translation. The proposed framework provides a fundamental process for automatic design-to-analysis, hence mitigates user intervention and error-free structural calculation for design-making.

Abstract:Numerical simulation and model testing are the main research methods of solving geo-technical and underground problems. In the 1980s, physical simulation (model testing) was one of the most popular methods to solve these types of problems, but since then, with the rapid development of IT technology, numerical simulations have rapidly become dominant. However, the complexity and uncertainty of geological conditions and geo-technical engineering problems represent a great challenge to the numerical method, leading some researchers to question how far numerical simulation can go. In this case, the physical simulations have begun to reappear in research and the use of physical models has seen valuable progress. In the past, problems have been solved either with physical simulation or numerical simulation, or just by comparing the results of these two methods simply. But very little attention has been paid to the question of how to combine the advantages of both and improve them. In the 3-D geo-mechanical model of the underground caverns of the Xiluodu hydropower station, the advantages of the two methods were combined and some of the primary principles of the numerical method were combined with the physical model process. Considering that the boundary condition has a great effect on the stress distribution, a larger test model was set up. The numerical discrete principle was also been used to simulate an initial geo-stress field. The basic principle of cavern excavation according to requires that loading comes first, followed by excavation. According to this idea, we developed a new technique, in which a high fidelity simulation of the excavation process and a very difficult cavern excavation were successfully achieved for the first time. The new method produced test results more satisfactory, and this simulation represents an obvious improvement of existing techniques. We also conducted a numerical simulation with almost the same conditions, and compared the results of the model test and the numerical simulation.

Abstract:A multi-step horizontal leaching method can be used to efficiently construct energy storage salt caverns. However, the modeling and control of a multi-step horizontal cavern are complicated and have been investigated little, resulting in many collapses of such caverns. To predict the 3-D development of a horizontal salt cavern during construction, a numerical model is proposed based on a composite structural mesh. The salt dissolution rate is introduced as being related to the brine concentration. The flow/concentration fields are dynamically divided into four subareas. Their governing equations are derived based on mass and volume conservation. The accumulation and re-distribution of the insoluble substances are considered. A C++ program is developed for model implementation. The feasibility and accuracy of the model are verified by comparisons with data in published literature. A series of simulations have been conducted for technological parameter optimization. Results show that using a larger borehole length increases cavern capacity. Using a larger step distance increases the construction control but decreases the cavern capacity. Using a larger flow rate increases construction efficiency but decreases the energy-saving coefficient and construction control. A long borehole length, a medium step distance and a variable flow rate are suggested for horizontal cavern construction.

Abstract:Underground water-sealed storage cavern is an important way for petroleum strategic reserve in China, which owns lots of outstanding advantages, such as low operating costs, high safety, and land resource conservation. As the major structure in underground water-sealed storage cavern, its layout parameters and excavation scheme will have significant impact on rock stability and overall project quality. A method is put forward to optimize layout and excavation scheme of main caverns. In this method, the Q system and Hoek–Brown strength criterion is utilized to estimate equivalent mechanical parameters of rock mass based on field survey data. Numerical test analysis is carried out by 3 Dimensions Distinct Element Code (3DEC). Displacement, maximum displacement and plastic zone volume are selected as three indicators for quantitative assessment. Besides, it is applied into a proposed large-scale underground water-sealed storage cavern project in China. Results show that axial direction should adopt NW325°, buried depth of cavern crown should locate at − 100 m, and spacing should be 1.5 times the span (36 m). Scheme two and "jump excavation" mode is recommended in construction, which can effectively reduce the interaction effect between adjacent caverns. This method has the characteristics of easy data acquisition, strong operability and common applicability. The achieved results can not only provide reference for related projects, but also further enrich the research content in this field, which has a certain engineering value and theoretical significance.

Abstract:The construction of underground cavern groups represents a particularly challenging task in current subsurface engineering due to a multitude of variable and often unknown factors, including diverse geological conditions. This study introduces a four-dimensional spatiotemporal model and formulates a dynamic safety information model for these underground systems. Developed using C# and Python, the model integrates the finite element analysis software ABAQUS and Microsoft SQL Server database. The framework allows for real-time visual management of monitoring data, dynamic coupling of construction phases with safety metrics, and continual updates correlating with construction progress. The theoretical findings offer valuable insights for enhancing the safety and efficiency of underground cavern group construction while also supplying methods for real-time safety feedback and control throughout the construction process.

Abstract:According to the main construction procedures of underground caverns, an analysis model for the excavation of a certain pumping station underground cavern group was established, and its excavation and support process are dynamically simulated. The calculation schemes of unsupport and support are compared with indicators such as plastic zone, bolt axial force and displacement field distribution. The analysis results show that after the support, the plastic zone distribution and deformation characteristics of the rock around the cave are greatly improved. The bolt axial force also meets the requirements, indicating that the support parameters and support methods are reasonable. The supporting effect has been well simulated and realized.

Abstract:The emerging upward shield method (USM) for constructing vertical shafts has been used in various projects, including the Midosuji utility tunnel in Japan. A scaled-down model testing system, featuring a geometric similarity ratio of 1:30, was developed specifically for studying the USM. This system incorporates sand inflow control, propulsion control, data acquisition, and water level control. It facilitates detailed observation and recording of parameters such as vertical displacement of surface soil layers, support force at the excavation face, and earth pressure within the model box. Consequently, it enables investigation into the excavation face instability process, modes, and the formation and evolution of the soil arch zone above the excavation face during upward shield tunneling. Additionally, through the application of particle image velocimetry (PIV) technology and GeoPIV-RG software v1.1, quantitative analysis of soil displacement fields during excavation face instability is conducted, capturing microscopic displacements and deformations of soil planes. This approach more accurately elucidates the accuracy of understanding the dynamic response of soil. Pre-test research using the model testing system explores the variation patterns of excavation face load displacement, vertical earth pressure within the failure zone, surface displacement, and internal soil displacement during the instability process. Analysis reveals that excavation face load variation typically progresses through three stages: rapid growth, slow growth, and descent. Moreover, vertical earth pressure shifts upward in tandem with excavation face displacement, while overall surface displacement initially shows slight settlement followed by accelerated uplift.

Abstract:By using three dimensional software MIDAS/GTS, the interactions among structures-soil-tunnel system is considered in this paper, and the working condition of shallow-buried underground excavation is simulated in the foundation of frame structures with the short-pile. The loadings and deformations of structures are studied before and after the tunnelling, and the influences of the following factors, including the horizontal position of tunnel and building, the height of building and the soil property, are analyzed. It is indicated that when the horizontal distance L equals zero (the distance between building axis to the tunnel axis), the building settlement increases gradually and shows a normal distribution during and after the tunnelling. Due to the small stiffness of frame structures with short-pile foundations, the building has large nonuniform settlement. When the distance of excavation is no less than 1.8 times of the thickness of overburden soil, the building settlement becomes stable, and the first principal stress P1 and maximum deformation rate E1 generally show a trend of decrease. With the increasing L, P1 and E1 will decrease accordingly, and the buildings tend to be inclined toward the tunnel. For a relatively larger distance, the building is nearly not affected.

Abstract:With the development of city construction, it is common to see more and more cross construction phenomena of the ground engineering and the underground engineering, which unavoidably contributes to the effect of the new construction on the existing construction. Therefore, on the premise of ensuring the safety of the existing construction, how to construct new projects has become one of the important issues for numerous scholars. In this paper, the finite element numerical simulation analysis method of ABAQUS and the simplified specification corner-points method are applied to analyze comparatively an engineering construction adjacent to the existing underlying tunnel. On this basis, the effects of the pit excavation and its subsequent construction on the underlying existing tunnel are evaluated. The field monitoring data demonstrate that the two methods, i. e. the numerical analysis method and the traditional theory of soil mechanics method, are coincidently available in such engineering construction which has clear boundary and explicit load and can secure engineering. The research also shows that the two-dimensional analysis model not only has the smaller calculation workload, but also has more security compared with a three-dimensional model considering practical engineering conditions.

Abstract:The construction of super large section (SLS) shallow buried tunnels involves challenges related to their large span, high flat rate, and complex construction process. Selecting an appropriate excavation method is crucial for ensuring stability, controlling costs, and managing the construction timeline. This study focuses on the selection of excavation methods and the mechanical responses of SLS tunnels in different types of surrounding rock. The research is based on the Yangjiashan tunnel project in Zhejiang Province, China, which is a four-line highway tunnel with a span of 21.3 m. Three sequential excavation methods were proposed and simulated using the three-dimensional finite difference method: the "upper first and lower later" side drift (SD) method, the central diaphragm method, and the top heading and bench (HB) method. The mechanical response characteristics of tunnel construction under these methods were investigated, including rock deformation, rock pressure, and the internal forces acting on the primary support. By comparing the performance of the three construction methods in rock masses of Grades III to V, the study aimed to determine the optimal construction method for SLS tunnels considering factors such as safety, cost, and schedule. Field tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the optimized construction scheme. The results of the field monitoring indicated that the "upper first and lower later" SD method in Grade V rock mass and the HB method in Grade III to IV rock mass are feasible and cost-effective under certain conditions. The research findings provide valuable insights for the design and construction of SLS tunnels in complex conditions, serving as a reference for engineers and project managers.

Study on the Stress and Deformation of Surrounding Rock and Support Structure of Super Large Section Tunnels Based on Different Excavation Methods

Abstract:Due to the complexity of construction sequence and the extended duration required to construct super large section tunnels, the selection of excavation method critically influences the stability of the surrounding rock and support structures. In this work, the Xiaoyuan Tunnel project in Jiangxi Province serves as the research background for employing ABAQUS software to simulate the variations in displacement and stress within the rock and support structures under three different excavation methods. The simulated results are subsequently compared and verified against monitoring data. The findings indicate that the three-benching seven-step method releases more stress (maximum principal stress value reaches 0.621 MPa) from the surrounding rock and support structures than the other methods, resulting in stress concentrations. Therefore, it is of vital significance to complete the initial support in time and seal the tunnel opening quickly. The maximum principal stress values caused by three excavation methods all appear at the arch foot position, highlighting the need for prompt reinforcement of stability support there. Compared to the CRD method and the three-benching seven-step method, the tunnel vault’s settlement value caused by the double-side drift method is reduced by 14% and 19%, respectively. Furthermore, the largest disturbance of the surrounding rock occurs under the CRD method, while the double-side drift method minimizes such disturbances, making it the preferred choice for the construction of super large section tunnels. These insights are invaluable for guiding the selection and optimization of construction methods for such tunnels.

The metro tunnels and is considered as an efficient medium of public transportation and is widely used to alleviate traffic problems and environmental pollution. Since many developed cities have rivers crossed through, tunneling shields sometimes have to cross rivers. The tunneling inevitably caused ground subsidence and consequently influence on the buildings and river banks [1]. Abstract:Simulation is a powerful tool that can be used for systematic planning, analysis, and decision-making. Proper designing is preliminary required to construct a new tunnel over an existing tunnel to ensure safety and durability. Once an underpass tunnel completes, the interaction between the tunnel structure and the nearby soil gains a stable state and the stress of the tunnel is balanced. However, the stability of an existing tunnel is affected if the construction in the nearby area is not properly analyzed. This article proposes a numerical simulation model to empirically analyze lining force and surface settlement in order to ensure safety in engineering practice. The existing tunnel structure working condition is simulated under the new tunnel. The artificial honeybee colony algorithm is used to extract the parameter fusion characteristic value of tunnel influence and the model of estimating the bending moment of group piles. The structural mechanics of existing tunnels under new tunnels are analyzed using the triple bend model to improve the bearing capacity of existing tunnels under new tunnels. Based on the above analysis, numerical simulation experiments are designed. The proposed method has high accuracy and strong fitting ability and can effectively reduce the displacement of existing tunnels. Moreover, the method can improve the bearing capacity of tunnels. For tunneling operation, the results of the simulation may be used as a recommendation.

Abstract:Numerical simulation is one of the main approaches to deal with such problems as reasonable layout and construction of underground powerhouse. The computer codes for fast Lagrangian analysis of continua,FLAC and FLAC3D,with the explicit finite difference method are regarded to be suitable respectively for both two-and three-dimensional numerical simulations of problems involving supported construction process in geotechnical engineering. As an engineering example,the cavern group of the underground powerhouse of Guandi Hydropower Station on the Yalong River in Southwest China is analyzed. The two-dimensional FLAC analysis is performed firstly for the optimization of location and spacing schemes of the three main chambers,i.e. the generator chamber,the main transformer chamber and the tail water surge chamber,considering their parallel arrangement and the modeling efficiency and computing cost. Then,the entirely-supported construction process of the cavern group of the underground powerhouse under the determined optimal layout scheme is simulated in three dimensions with FLAC3D. The distributions of displacement,stress and plastic deformation in the rock masses surrounding the caverns and the loads carried by the supporting structures are obtained. It is proven by the results that the numerical simulations of the layout and construction process of underground powerhouse with explicitfinite difference method using respectively FLAC2D and FLAC3D match those of the practical case. The results from nonlinear stress analyses can be used to guide the design of excavations and rock supporting mechanisms.

Abstract:Numerical simulation analysis was performed on the exravation process of underground powerhouse of Shuihuya hydropower station based on three-dimension nonlinear finite element method. It adopted the MARC software, including the numerial simulation of excavation, nonlinear solution, finite element calculation, displacement analysis on the calculation results, stress analysis, and the analysis of yield area. The study was focused on the stress and deformation of cave and adjacent rock, the distribution of yield area,and the integral stability of the underground cavern group. The research results provides the basis for the construction of the project.

Abstract:During the excavation process of a large-span variable cross-section of a tunnel, the deformation and stress characteristics of the surrounding rock supporting the structure are complex, and construction control is difficult. Based on an actual tunnel project, the mechanical effect and deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock and support structure of a large-span variable cross-section tunnel during its excavation and support process were studied via numerical simulation. The construction method, using the bench method to excavate and set up the transition section in the variable cross-section, was proposed. Based on the numerical simulation results, two optimized excavation schemes were proposed and analyzed to address the construction method conversion problems in constructing large-span variable cross-section tunnels. The rationality of the optimized construction scheme was verified through a comparison with field monitoring data. The research results show that the three-bench temporary inverted arch method supported by the temporary vertical portal frame has good applicability in constructing the large-span variable cross-section tunnel. This scheme can effectively control the stress concentration and excessive deformation of the surrounding rock in the large-span variable cross-section tunnel. The numerical simulation results agree with the field monitoring data, which verifies the rationality of analyzing the construction mechanical effects of variable cross-section tunnels and selecting construction schemes through numerical simulation. The research results can provide reference for the construction of similar tunnel projects.

Abstract:Ensuring the structural health of tunnels is essential for construction safety. Numerical simulation is a common tool to quickly and accurately analyse the structural health of tunnels. However, numerical simulation analysis, which is time-consuming with complex procedures, also requires the operators to have high software proficiency and abundant mechanical theoretical knowledge. In response to this, we build a frame of a rapid parameterized modeling platform for highway tunnels based on C++ programming, and through re-developing a 3DEC-centered computational platform, we develop the rapid parameterized modelling and optimized design platform of highway tunnels that integrates pre-processing, post-processing, and computational analysis. Based on the developed platform for highway tunnels, we analyze the displacement evolution and stress redistribution of surrounding rock with various excavation methods under the class-IV surrounding rock conditions of the Lushan Tunnel. The results show that the developed platform greatly simplifies the discrete element modeling and analysis process of highway tunnels, reduces the modeling difficulty and usage threshold for on-site applications. In addition, this platform is used to quickly determine the safe distance between the face of the Lushan Tunnel and the tunnel invert, which can effectively guide safety assurance for large highly-mechanized construction, and provide reference for the prevention and control of rock mass disasters arising from hidden problems of tunnel primary support structure under complex geological conditions.

Abstract:In order to verify the applicability of the computer numerical simulation method under complex engineering conditions, and solve the problem that it is difficult to guarantee the normal construction of underground projects with a depth of more than 1 km (it is difficult to carry out multiple field attempts under high-depth conditions, and if you simply use ordinary the calculation method, its calculation accuracy is difficult to guarantee). For the construction of complex geological conditions of an underground mine with a depth of 1300 m in the Central Plains of China, based on the finite difference method (FDM) with high calculation accuracy, using FLAC $^{mathrm {3D}}$ software based on FDM, and using progressive design method (PDM), design a variety of different schemes and analyze the mechanism of force and deformation of the surrounding rock mass of the project. Apply the obtained optimal scheme in actual engineering, and monitor the actual force and deformation. Comparing the results of the computer numerical simulation with the monitoring results, the results show that the computer numerical simulation method can also have good application in the actual engineering under the geological conditions of ultra-kilometer depth. It also provides theoretical basis and technical guidance for engineering hypothesis under approximate conditions.
