Abstract:Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a novel synthetic antioxidant and it has higher safety profile and more excellent antioxidant effect than other synthetic antioxidants and is internationally recognized as one of the best food antioxidants. However, excessive use in food can have unfavorable effects on human body. Thus, it is critical to establish a rapid detection method for TBHQ in food samples. In this study, a cobalt based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) was fabricated by one-pot hydrothermal method and embedded in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to construct an economical and sensitive TBHQ electrochemical sensor. The results showed that this sensor possessed a wide linear range (0.004 - 20 μM and 20 - 300 μM), a low limit of detection (LOD = 2.5 nM, S/N = 3) as well as an ultra-high sensitivity (43.19 μA μM-1 cm-2). Moreover, the sensor also has superior selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility and anti-interference, and can be successfully applied for the detection of TBHQ in instant noodles and potato chips samples.

Abstract:Food additives enhance sensory pleasure and improve marketability in food product formulations, yet their potential health risks are highly consequential. Tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), in this regard, has a controversial reputation owing to its neurotoxic effects, which include convulsions and other chronic issues. This situation underscores the need for an advanced electrochemical sensing platform. The current study advocates the utilization of copper tungstate nanoparticles to enhance the sensitivity, selectivity, and efficiency in TBHQ detection, thus addressing the challenges posed by the excessive use of additives and safeguarding the integrity of the food supply chain. Hydrothermally synthesized CuWO4 nanoparticles exhibited superior physicochemical and morphological characteristics, bringing about wide linear response ranges (0.01 to 789 μM), high selectivity, excellent anti-interference capabilities, and a low detection limit of 0.9 nM (S/N = 3). The CuWO4 modified screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) presents promising recovery ranges in food samples, facilitating real-time monitoring and streamlining the quality assessment of food additives.

Abstract:It is crucial to achieve accurate and rapid detection of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in the field of food safety, for the excessive addition of TBHQ in food is harmful to human health and evil to the environment and aquatic life. Therefore, researchers have done a lot of work on signal amplification through nanomaterials to achieve TBHQ detection, but the conventional single-signal detection strategy results in limited accuracy. In this work, an innovative and facile ratiometric electrochemical sensor for TBHQ detection was built based on advanced nanomaterial complexes carbon nanotube-encapsulated Co/nitrogen-doped carbon (Co NC/CNT) and selected internal reference signal methylene blue (MB) enhancing the accuracy by offering effective self-calibration. A linear relationship between the net peak current ratio between TBHQ and MB (Δ I (TBHQ)/Δ I (MB)) and the TBHQ concentration was obtained under the optimal experimental conditions, with two linear ranges of 0.1–20 μM and 20–100 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.054 μM (S/N = 3). Benefiting from the synergistic effects between Co NC and CNT and the ratiometric sensing strategy, the as-designed sensor for TBHQ detection showcased excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and satisfactory applicability in real edible oil samples.

Abstract:Natural glycoside toxins, one of the most ubiquitous toxins in food of plant origin, cause serious health threat on humans and livestock. Evaluation of their health risk is of great significance. We proposed a non-enzymatic sensor based on reduced graphene oxide/gold nanoparticles/boronic acid nano-composites for their rapid and simple detection. The nano-composites were integrally synthesized in liquid dispersion. Gold nanoparticles, which were reduced from chlomauric acid, nucleated and grew on graphene oxide films directly. 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid self-assembled with gold nanoparticles through gold-sulfur bond. With reduction of graphene oxide through cyclic voltammetry, the nano-composites were then one step modified onto the working electrodes as sensing layer. Glycoalkaloids, common glycoside toxins in potatoes, were detected with the functionalized screen-printed electrodes. Electrochemical differential pulse voltammetry was applied for the detection. The sensor exhibited good stability in at least four weeks with a wide detection range from 10 mu M to 1000 mu M. The limit of detection was as low as 3.4 mu M. The developed sensor was successfully applied to the detection of glycoalkaloids in real potato samples. As a proof of concept, the disposable sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity exhibited great application potential for the risk control of natural glycoside toxins in food.

Abstract:In this work, a "turn off-on" fluorescent sensor was developed for highly sensitive determination of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) based on an Fe(III)-based metal-organic framework (Fe-MOF). An Fe-MOF with an octahedral structure was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method using ferric chloride hexahydrate and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH 2 -BDC) as raw materials. The fluorescence of Fe-MOF is extremely weak owing to ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and internal filtration effect (IFE). When the system contained TBHQ, the binding of TBHQ to Fe(III) inhibited the LMCT of the fluorescent ligand NH 2 -BDC to Fe(III), releasing the fluorescence of NH 2 -BDC and thus restoring the fluorescence. With this as the basis, a rapid, sensitive, and selective fluorescence sensor is developed for the detection of TBHQ. Under the optimal conditions, TBHQ showed good linearity with fluorescence intensity in the range of 0–1.5 × 10 2 μmol L −1 and a detection limit of 0.0030 μmol L −1 (S/N = 3). The selectivity, reproducibility, and stability of the developed Fe-MOF-based sensors are comprehensively studied. Finally, the practicality of the method is verified by examining the detection of TBHQ in soybean oil; the results are consistent with those obtained using conventional high-performance liquid chromatography.

Abstract:Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a phenolic substance that is commonly employed to prevent food oxidation. Excessive or improper utilization of this antioxidant can not only impact food quality but may also pose potential risks to human health. In this study, an ultrasensitive, stable, and easily operable ratiometric electrochemical sensor was successfully fabricated by combining the tubular (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (T-PEDOT) with single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) for the detection of TBHQ antioxidants in food. The SWCNHs/T-PEDOT nanocomposite fabricated through ultrasound-assisted and template approaches was employed as the modified substrate for the electrode interface. The synergistic effect of SWCNHs and T-PEDOT, which possess excellent electrical conductivity and catalytic properties, enabled the modified electrode to showcase remarkable electrocatalytic performance towards TBHQ, with the redox signal of methylene blue serving as an internal reference. Under optimized conditions, the SWCNHs/T-PEDOT-modified electrode demonstrated good linearity within the TBHQ concentration range of 0.01-200.0 μg mL-1, featuring a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.005 μg mL-1. The proposed ratiometric electrochemical sensor displayed favorable reproducibility, stability, and anti-interference capacity, thereby offering a promising strategy for monitoring the levels of TBHQ in oil-rich food products.

Abstract:Herein, a novel molecularly imprinted gel (MIG)-based electrochemical sensor equipped with hydrated zirconium oxide@hollow carbon spheres (ZrO(OH)2@HCS) was developed for highly sensitive and selective detection of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in foods. The MIG was synthesized by using L-histidine to rapidly cross-link cationic guar gum, acrylamide and TBHQ through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions at room temperature, which offered outstanding specific recognition performance for TBHQ. ZrO(OH)2@HCS possessing excellent conductivity and water dispersibility was employed for signal amplification. Under optimal conditions, the MIG-ZrO(OH)2@HCS/GCE sensor showed a wide dynamic detection range (0.025-100 μM) with a low limit of detection (6.7 nM). TBHQ recovery experiments were conducted in spiked peanut oil and milk powder, yielding excellent recoveries. Moreover, the sensor was successfully utilized to detect TBHQ levels in snowflake chicken cutlets, crispy fried pork and boneless chicken fillets, and the results were in agreement with those obtained by the high performance liquid chromatography method.

Abstract:Due to the potential environment and health risks of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), rapid, portable, selective and sensitive quantification of TBHQ in food and the environment are strictly essential. With this in mind, a selective, sensitive and rapid colorimetric TBHQ biosensor was developed using rationally designed copper-crosslinked carbon dot hydrogel nanozyme (BC-CDs@Cu). The BC-CDs@Cu had a high peroxidase-like activity toward the chromogenic reaction of hydrogen peroxide with dopamine via the generation of hydroxyl radicals and electron transfer process. The Michaelis-Menten constants of BC-CDs@Cu for dopamine and hydrogen peroxide were determined to be 0.86 and 0.91 mM. The added TBHQ markedly inhibited the BC-CDs@Cu-catalyzed dopamine oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, ascribing to the highly effective and rapid scavenging of hydroxyl radicals and the suppression of electron transfer. The inhibitory extent was applied for well quantifying TBHQ in the range of 0.5 - 20.0 μM with a detection limit of 70 nM. The proposed biosensor had a negligible response to various interfering substances. Moreover, a smartphone-assisted visual ratiometric biosensor was fabricated, and used to accomplish portable quantification of TBHQ in edible oils and water samples. This work reveals the enormous potential of hydrogel nanozyme, which will open a new situation for the detection of hazardous substances.

Abstract:In this study, an electrochemical sensor based on MoS2 with enhanced electrochemical signals from electrochemically activated carbon cloth (EACC) electrodes and cross-linked o-aminothiophenol functionalized AuNPs (o-ATP@AuNPs) was developed for the detection of the unsaturated vegetable oil antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). In this approach, carbon cloth is activated through the implementation of electrochemical methods, thereby effectively increasing its specific surface area. The resulting EACC, serving as an electrode substrate, enables the growth of additional nanomaterials and enhances conductivity. The incorporation of MoS2 effectively augments the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Subsequently, MIP/MoS2/EMCC is formed via electropolymerization, utilizing TBHQ as the template molecule and o-ATP@AuNPs as the functional monomer. The SS bond of o-ATP ensures a strong and stable connection between MoS2 and o-ATP@AuNPs, thereby facilitating the immobilization of MIP. In addition, the high conductivity possessed by o-ATP@AuNPs could effectively improve the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Under the optimal conditions, MIP/MoS2/EMCC could determine TBHQ in the range of 1 × 10-3 μM to 120 μM by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a detection line of 0.72 nM. The proposed MIP/MoS2/EMCC is expected to be applied in the future for the selective and sensitive detection of TBHQ in vegetable oils.

Abstract:We report herein a "turn off-on" fluorescent sensor based on ZnCdSe quantum dots (ZnCdSe QDs) and self-assembled zinc porphyrin for sensitive and rapid detection of ochratoxin A (OTA). Using environmentally friendly dodecyl dimethyl betaine as "soft template", zinc 5, 10, 15, 20-tetra(4-pyridyl)-21H-23H-porphine (ZnTPyP) was self-assembled into nanorods (SA-ZnTPyP) through a green process. The OTA detection process involves two steps: (1) the fluorescence of ZnCdSe QDs is significantly quenched by SA-ZnTPyP, and (2) the combination between SA-ZnTPyP and OTA releases ZnCdSe QDs from their quenchers such that the fluorescence is recovered. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the newly developed fluorescent sensor showed a linear response in concentration range 0.5-80 ng mL(-1), with a detection limit of 0.33 ng mL(-1). The excellent applicability of the system has been verified in milk and coffee samples, with relative recoveries between 98.33% and 103.70%. The proposed fluorescent sensor exhibits excellent selectivity and high sensitivity, and thus could be a promising tool for on-site determination of OTA in food safety control and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:In this manuscript, a novel electrochemical sensor was developed for the simultaneous detection of butylhydroxyanisole and tert‐butylhydroquinone based on functional carbon black (FCB) and porous NH2‐UiO‐66 composite modified glassy carbon electrode (NH2‐UIO‐66@FCB/GCE). In this paper, a porous zirconium‐based metal–organic framework (NH2‐UiO‐66) and functionalized carbon black (FCB) composite was prepared through a one‐pot hydrothermal method, and a novel electrochemical sensor based on NH2‐UiO‐66@FCB modified glassy carbon electrode (NH2‐UIO‐66@FCB/GCE) was developed for the simultaneous sensoring of butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) and tert‐butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). The morphology and structure of NH2‐UiO‐66@FCB were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectrum. The electrochemical behaviors of the NH2‐UiO‐66@FCB/GCE were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimized experimental conditions, the linear ranges for TBHQ and BHA detection were determined to be 0.12–460 μM and 0.7–420 μM, respectively, with their corresponding detection limits of 0.072 μM and 0.29 μM. Furthermore, the sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, repeatability and stability, and successfully used for the simultaneous detection of TBHQ and BHA in food samples.

Abstract:In this study, a Zinc porphyrin based covalent organic framework (COF-366-Zn) was synthesized by imine condensation reaction. And the multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) were interspersed on COF-366-Zn to enhance the electron transfer between the material and the electrode surface. The composite material was used to design a COF-366-Zn/MWCNTs/Nafion/GCE sensor. The sensor performance for simultaneous electrochemical detection of antioxidants was investigated. It was found that the COF-366-Zn/MWCNTs/Nafion/GCE sensor could simultaneously detect tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and phenol in actual samples with good detection performance. At the same time, the mutual interference between the three analytes was studied. The detection limits are 0.025 μM, 0.056 μM and 0.051 μM, respectively. In addition, the sensor also exhibits excellent anti-interference performance and storage performance.

Abstract:The demand for processed foods relies heavily on synthetic antioxidants like TBHQ and BHA to prevent spoilage. However, their excessive use poses health risks, prompting regulatory measures in many countries to ensure food safety. In this concern, a proficient electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous detection of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) was designed. A comparatively greener hydroxyapatite (HAP) supported zinc ferrite (ZF) nanosensor was developed with conducting coating of Pd nanoparticles. A consolidated and mechanistic approach was opted to reduce the band gap and agglomeration the magnetic ZF nanoparticles. The interesting spherocuboidal morphology of the synthesized nanocomposite with good porosity enhanced the detection performance of the sensor. The proposed platform displayed good detection limits of both TBHQ and BHA (0.73 and 5.6 nM for TBHQ and BHA, respectively). The nanosensor successfully detected TBHQ and BHA in food samples proved its potential for the development of commercially competitive sensor.

Abstract:Reliable quantitative analysis using electrochemical sensors remains a challenge due to the differences in the effective area after surface modification of the electrodes, resulting in poor precision of the signals between electrodes. Herein, a novel quantitative approach called standard curved surface for the electrochemical detection is reported which does not require identical electrodes, high modification, or the use of internal standards that may cause calibration interferences. The technique is based upon the principle that the current is linearly correlated with the electroactive area of the electrodes. By introducing the electroactive area as a new variable into the standard curve, a three-dimensional standard curved surface was obtained to correct for differences among electrodes, thereby improving the accuracy of electrochemical detection. Furthermore, it was applied to the determination of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in edible oil. Compared with the traditional standard curve, the reported method reduced the relative standard deviation values from 13.22% to 4.01%. The current response was linear with the concentration of TBHQ between 5 × 10 −6 and 1.25 × 10 −3 mol/L. The limit of detection was 1.07 × 10 −6 mol/L and the spike recovery was from 90.44% to 112.09%. Therefore, a universal calibration method has been reported with expected additional applications for electrochemical sensors.
Development of a Magnetic Nanoparticles-Based Screen-Printed Electrodes (Mnps-Spes) Biosensor for the Quantification of Ochratoxin A in Cereal and Feed Samples

Abstract:A rapid and sensitive electrochemical biosensor based on magnetic nanoparticles and screen-printed electrodes (MNPs-SPEs sensor) was developed for the detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) in cereal and feed samples. Different types of magnetic nanoparticles-based ELISA (MNPs-ELISA) were optimized, and the signal detection, as well as sensitivity, was enhanced by the combined use of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curve of the MNPs-SPEs sensor was y = 0.3372x + 0.8324 (R2 = 0.9805). The linear range of detection and the detection limit were 0.01–0.82 ng/mL and 0.007 ng/mL, respectively. In addition, 50% inhibition (IC50) was detectable at 0.10 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) of this MNPs-SPEs sensor in cereal and feed samples was 0.28 μg/kg. The recovery rates in spiked samples were between 78.7% and 113.5%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 3.6–9.8%, with the coefficient of variation lower than 15%. Parallel analysis of commercial samples (corn, wheat, and feedstuff) showed a good correlation between MNPs-SPEs sensor and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS). This new method provides a rapid, highly sensitive, and less time-consuming method to determine levels of ochratoxin A in cereal and feedstuff samples.

The Co/NCNTs composites exhibited superior electrocatalytic performance for tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) oxidation due to the synergistic effect between chemical composition and the specific structure of Co nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes. It was found that the reaction underwent a quasi-reversible redox reaction with 37-fold higher anodic current for TBHQ at Co/NCNT-modified electrode when compared to bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE). In optimal condition, Co/NCNTs/GCE exhibited a linear range of 0.05–80.00 μmol·L−1 for detecting TBHQ, and the limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be as low as 10 nmol·L−1 (signal/noise of S/N = 3). Moreover, the as-obtained modified electrode was successfully used to assay the content of TBHQ in edible oil samples.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:Sodium benzoate is a commonly used food additive, but its excessive use or residue can pose potential risks to human health. In this study, we developed a novel method using TetraBromo Fluorescein Disodium Carbon Quantum Dots (TBrFD CQDs) for the rapid and accurate detection of sodium benzoate. The feasibility, sensitivity, selectivity, and stability of the method were evaluated. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed method, with a linear correlation between sodium benzoate concentration and fluorescence intensity. The detection limit was calculated to be 0.094 mg L- 1 . The method exhibited good selectivity and stability, and its applicability was validated in real samples, including two beverages, with recovery rates ranging from 88.78% to 99.02%. This method offers a promising approach for the rapid and on-site detection of sodium benzoate in food, contributing to food safety and consumer health.

Abstract:Infiltration of monocytes into the arterial wall is an early cellular event in atherogenesis. Recent evidence shows that C-reactive protein (CRP) is deposited in the arterial intima at sites of atherogenesis. In this study, we demonstrate that CRP deposition precedes the appearance of monocytes in early atherosclerotic lesions. CRP is chemotactic for freshly isolated human blood monocytes. A specific CRP receptor is demonstrated on monocytes in vitro as well as in vivo, and blockage of the receptor by use of a monoclonal anti-receptor antibody completely abolishes CRP-induced chemotaxis. CRP may play a major role in the recruitment of monocytes during atherogenesis.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a readily available copolymer that comes as an aqueous dispersion with good processability. A flexible voltammetric sensor for the widely used food stabilizer tert.-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) was constructed by using a film of PEDOT:PSS. The electron transfer efficiency of the electrode was enhanced by doping with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and mass transport at the electrode-electrolyte interface was increased by adding the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) which acts as a sorbent for TBHQ. SEM, AFM, XPS, UV − vis and electrochemical analysis were conducted to characterize the properties of the electrode. After optimization of the experimental conditions, the electrode operated at a working potential of 0.17 V (vs. SCE) has a linear response in the 0.5–200 μM TBHQ concentration range and a lower detection limit of 0.15 μM (at S/N = 3). It was applied for the determination of TBHQ in spiked real samples, and recoveries ranged between 96.85 and 103.41%.

Abstract:Bisphenols threaten human health and sensitive detection is crucial. The present study aims to develop ternary composites of copper metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) with AuAg microstructures. The composite structure was formed by a galvanic displacement reaction and confirmed using SEM. A binder-free catalyst was used to study the electrochemical redox reaction of bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS); an irreversible cyclic voltammetric signal at +0.70 V and + 0.91 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), in the dynamic range of 20 nM to 2.0 mM, and 10 nM to 1.0 mM, with limits of detection of 2.9 nM, and 3.2 nM (S/N = 3) was obtained. Practical analysis was applied to frozen tomatoes, tuna fish, milk powder, PET bottles, raw milk, and urine samples with a recovery rate of 94.00-100.80% (n = 3). Voltammetric results were validated using HPLC detection with high precision. The sensor is a promising alternative platform for measuring BPA in food samples.
