Abstract:Fluid flow through crustal rocks is controlled by permeability. Underground fluid flow is crucial in many geotechnical endeavors, such as CO2 sequestration, geothermal energy, and oil and gas recovery. Pervasive fluid flow and pore fluid pressure control the strength of a rock and affect seismicity in tectonic and geotechnical settings. Despite its relevance, the evolution of permeability with changing temperature and during deformation remains elusive. In this study, the permeability of Westerly granite at an effective pressure of 100 MPa was measured under conditions near its brittle-ductile transition, between 650 °C and 850 °C, with a strain rate on the order of 2·10-6 s-1. To capture the evolution of permeability with increasing axial strain, the samples were continuously deformed in a Paterson gas-medium triaxial apparatus. The microstructures of the rock were studied after testing. The experiments reveal an inversion in the permeability evolution: an initial decrease in permeability due to compaction and then an increase in permeability shortly before and immediately after failure. The increase in permeability after failure, also present at high temperatures, is attributed to the creation of interconnected fluid pathways along the induced fractures. This systematic increase demonstrates the subordinate role that temperature dilatancy plays in permeability control compared to stress and its related deformation. These new experimental results thus demonstrate that permeability enhancement under brittle-ductile conditions unveils the potential for EGS exploitation in high-temperature rocks.
Hydrological constraints on the potential of enhanced geothermal systems in the ductile crust

Abstract:Continental crust at temperatures > 400 °C and depths > 10–20 km normally deforms in a ductile manner, but can become brittle and permeable in response to changes in temperature or stress state induced by fluid injection. In this study, we quantify the theoretical power generation potential of an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) at 15–17 km depth using a numerical model considering the dynamic response of the rock to injection-induced pressurization and cooling. Our simulations suggest that an EGS circulating 80 kg s −1 of water through initially 425 °C hot rock can produce thermal energy at a rate of ~ 120 MWth (~ 20 MWe) for up to two decades. As the fluid temperature decreases (less than 400 °C), the corresponding thermal energy output decreases to around 40 MWth after a century of fluid circulation. However, exploiting these resources requires that temporal embrittlement of nominally ductile rock achieves bulk permeability values of ~ 10 –15 –10 –14 m 2 in a volume of rock with dimensions ~ 0.1 km 3 , as lower permeabilities result in unreasonably high injection pressures and higher permeabilities accelerate thermal drawdown. After cooling of the reservoir, the model assumes that the rock behaves in a brittle manner, which may lead to decreased fluid pressures due to a lowering of thresholds for failure in a critically stressed crust. However, such an evolution may also increase the risk for short-circuiting of fluid pathways, as in regular EGS systems. Although our theoretical investigation sheds light on the roles of geologic and operational parameters, realizing the potential of the ductile crust as an energy source requires cost-effective deep drilling technology as well as further research describing rock behavior at elevated temperatures and pressures.

Cooling-induced permeability enhancement for networks of microfractures in superhot geothermal environments

Abstract:Recent researches have proposed the use of enhanced geothermal system reservoirs consisting of dense networks of microfractures, created by hydraulic and/or thermal fracturing in superhot/supercritical geothermal environments, because of their suitability for thermal energy harvesting. During fracturing and energy extraction, the fracture networks are exposed to cooling due to the injection of cold fluid into the reservoirs. Previous studies showed such cooling enhanced reservoir permeability in conventional geothermal environments. However, the cooling may result in a higher risk of seismicity, owing to decreased normal stress on the fractures. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether cooling-induced permeability enhancement and a higher risk of seismicity occurs within networks of microfractures which consist of numerous interconnected microfractures at various orientations to the in situ triaxial stress. Thus, no dominant fractures have the possibility to cause permeability enhancement/induced seismicity. In this study, results are presented for borehole cooling experiments on a dense network of microfractures in granite, at 400 °C, under true triaxial stress. Permeability and acoustic emissions were measured with decreases in borehole temperature (up to ~ 90 °C). Results showed that permeability increased with increasing temperature drop at relatively low stress levels (15 and 20 MPa). The permeability enhancement occurred without intensive failure, and was reversible. However, permeability was almost constant at a higher stress level (65 MPa). Results showed that permeability enhancement required a thermal stress equivalent to the mean stress, so that the normal stress was reduced to near-zero, for a considerable amount of the microfractures. Additionally, the permeability of dense microfracture networks can be increased by cooling primarily through thermo-elastic deformation (without intensive failure), which may be useful to compensate for the reduction in injectivity due to cooling-induced fluid property changes.

Abstract:The drilling of geothermal energy, CO2 sequestration, and wastewater injection all involve the pressurized flow of fluids through porous rock, which can cause deformation and fracture of the material. Despite the widespread use of these industrial methods, there is a lack of experimental data on the connection between the pore pressure rise, the deformation and permeability changes in real rock. In order to address this gap in the literature, this study developed an artificial rock material that can be deformed and fractured at low pressures. By controlling the porosity, permeability, and strength of the material during the sintering process, it is possible to mimic various types of rock. The artificial rock was designed to accommodate radial flow and deformation, allowing for the tracking of deformation by monitoring the flux and driving pressure and thus calculating the permeability changes under various pressure conditions. The study was able to examine the impact of both ductile and brittle deformation on the permeability during pressurized flow, which were captured by two models that were adjusted to this scenario. This study provides a link between pressurized flow, rock formation permeability and ductile to brittle deformation, that can constrain risk assessment to geothermal energy and CO2

Abstract:Rock fractures always provide the main flow pathways in geological systems. When exposed to reactive flow, mineral dissolution causes different dissolution regimes and significantly impacts permeability change. Previous studies have examined dissolution regimes and permeability evolution in horizontal geometry, but dissolution dynamics and permeability changes of vertical fractures in a gravity field remain unexplored. Here, we conduct flow-dissolution experiments combined with a pore-scale modeling approach to investigate regime transition and permeability evolution in vertical fractures. We validate the modeling approach using experimental results and illustrate the importance of gravitational effects in dissolving vertical fractures. Our 3D numerical simulations reveal the regime transition, represented by a critical Richardson number Ri , from the forced convection regime to the buoyancy-driven convection regime as the importance of gravity increases. In the buoyancy-driven regime, gravitational effects promote the development of localized dissolution/flow channels. However, gravitational effects become negligible in the forced convection regime where wormholes and uniform patterns can be separated by the critical Pe number. Using the critical Ri and Pe numbers, we establish a phase diagram of dissolution regimes for vertical fractures in a gravity field, exhibiting good agreement with experiments. By correlating this phase diagram with permeability-aperture curves, we directly estimate the power law exponent of permeability evolution for each dissolution regime. This approach extends the classic phase diagram of dissolution regimes to consider gravitational effects on vertical fractures and provides a guide to directly estimate the parameters for permeability evolution, which is essential in reactive-transport modeling at the field scale.

Abstract:In Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), rock fractures in the reservoir are often subjected to cyclic changes in effective stress at elevated temperatures, causing permeability variations. In this study, the effect of cyclic normal stress on permeability evolution of rough fractures in Gonghe granite at elevated temperature was investigated through flow-through experiments. The results show that the fracture permeability decreases with increasing normal load and partially recovers as the normal load releases. Under a constant normal stress, the fractures gradually close, exhibiting viscoelastic-plastic behavior that can be characterized using the Nishihara model. Based on these characteristics, a fracture-creep deformation model has been developed considering the stress history using a combination of the Hopkins fracture closure model and the Nishihara model. This study investigated the effects of cyclic stress on the internal geometric features of fractures at elevated temperature, calculated the fracture deformation and the corresponding permeability during the loading and unloading process, and validated the accuracy of the proposed model. The study reveals the primary mechanisms responsible for fracture permeability evolution under cyclic effective stress at elevated temperatures, providing valuable insights for the sustainable development of EGS.

Abstract:Abstract As main heat exchange channel in enhanced geothermal system, the evolution of hydraulic conductivity in fracture is significance for efficient heat mining. For the thermal stress or thermal cracking spontaneously induced by the temperature difference between low-temperature fluid and hot rock in heat mining stage, it is necessary to explore the damage mechanism along EGS fracture and the corresponding permeability evolution. Firstly, the long-term permeability tests under high temperature (50–200 °C) were conducted by the self-developed high temperature seepage experimental device. Then, a coupled THM-D model was constructed to describe the damage distribution along fracture. Combined with experimental and simulation results, relationship between the thermal stress/cracking and the evolution of fracture permeability is revealed. The results indicate that during high-temperature (200 °C) experiments, the fracture permeability first increases rapidly under the low-temperature induced thermal stress/cracking, then decreases due to the blockage effect induced by the debris particles generated in thermal cracking along fracture. The enhancement of injection velocity and heterogeneity are all conducive to the emergence of thermal cracking in matrix along fracture. Simultaneously, high confining pressure has a negative effect on the migration of debris particles of thermal cracking, which contribute to prevent the blockage of debris particles.

Abstract:Enhanced geothermal systems create fractured reservoirs to extract economic quantities of heat from low-permeability and/or low-porosity geothermal resources. Convective heat transfer characteristics of fluids at supercritical pressures in rock fractures are important for optimizing the heat transfer model, which is a key tool for simulating heat extraction and improving the heat recovery factor for such projects. This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of laminar convective heat transfer of CO2 at supercritical pressures in a horizontal fracture with an aperture of 0.2 mm. The laboratory apparatus operated at temperatures up to 280 degrees C, fluid pressures up to 14 MPa, and confining pressures up to 28 MPa. The effects of mass flow rate and initial rock temperature on the rock wall and fluid temperatures were examined. A method was proposed for processing the experimental data and local heat transfer performance in the fracture was obtained. Considering the effects of variations in thermophysical properties, a correlation of heat transfer performance in the rock fracture was proposed to improve field simulation models for enhanced geothermal systems. Impact of fracture shear dilation on long-term heat extraction in Enhanced Geothermal Systems: Insights from a fully-coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical simulation

Abstract:Shear dilation of fractures has been recognized as a main mechanism of permeability enhancement by hydraulic stimulation in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs); however, the interactive role of fracture shear dilation and thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling processes in long-term heat extraction performance of EGSs remains unclear. In this study, we develop a novel THM coupling model based on the discrete fracture network approach, which can realistically capture important processes including hybrid normal-shear deformation of fractures, thermal expansion of rocks, fluid flow in both fractures and rocks, and heat convection/conduction as well as local thermal non-equilibrium effect and changes in physical parameters of fluid. We quantitatively investigate the effects of fracture network geometries and geomechanical boundary constraints on fracture shear dilatancy, and the resulting heat transfer characteristics of EGSs. Numerical results reveal that shear dilation of fractures can be triggered by transient pore pressurization and thermal stress under anisotropic in-situ stress condition, and would severely engender flow channeling as well as anisotropic heat transfer, which strongly impact the heat extraction performance. The production temperature tends to be overestimated while the thermal production rate may be underestimated, if the shear dilatational behavior is not incorporated. Increased in-situ stress ratio and injection/production pressure would magnify the effects of shear dilation, and lead to considerable enhancement of fracture permeability, eventually resulting in much earlier and quicker temperature drop. Excessive increase of fracture density and the location of injection-production wells parallel to potential channelized flow paths, formed by intersected fractures preferentially oriented for shear sliding, tend to form short circulating flow paths and reduce the heat extraction performance. Our study demonstrates the importance of considering fracture shear dilation and fully-coupled THM behaviors when evaluating the long-term performance and efficiency of heat extraction in EGSs.

Crack Dynamics Propagation in the Fractured Geothermal Reservoir Under Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical Coupling

Abstract:As climate change accelerates due to fossil fuel use, geothermal energy emerges as an indispensable renewable solution 1. Hot dry rock (HDR) reservoirs, accounting for more than 90% of total geothermal resources 2, have gained wide attention worldwide for their abundant reserves, wide distribution, and carbon-free, stable, and efficient supply characteristics 3. While HDR geothermal energy offers significant potential, its development faces challenges, including the complex interaction between fluid flow, heat transfer, reactive solute transport, and the rock’s mechanical processes, referred to as the THMC coupling process 4. Cracks, ubiquitous in HDR geothermal reservoirs, exhibit complex behaviors, complicating the assessment, prediction, and control of these features during geothermal energy extraction 5. Despite recent advances in modeling THMC coupling processes, a comprehensive approach to accurately representing the morphological changes of cracks in HDR geothermal reservoirs under THMC conditions is still lacking, especially at the reservoir field scale. To overcome this scientific challenge, this work extends the THMC coupling model by Han et al. 6 to incorporate crack dynamics propagation. This approach utilizes a coupled XFEM-EDFM scheme, which employs a separate crack mesh embedded within a background rock matrix mesh. Then, a domain-integral method (J integral) is applied to compute the equivalent stress intensity factor (SIF) criterion, which is subsequently used to govern both the onset and dynamics of crack propagation. The distribution fields of pressure, temperature, concentration, and crack growth after 1000 days of heat extraction in the HDR reservoir are illustrated in Figure 1. The results demonstrate that variations in pressure, temperature, and reactive solute transportation significantly contribute to crack growth in the reservoir during long-term heat extraction. This model can be utilized to analyze crack dynamics propagation under THMC coupling conditions and to assess the impact of interactions between THMC processes and crack propagation on heat extraction in deep geothermal systems.

Cooling effects on induced seismicity in supercritical geothermal systems

Abstract:<p> <span>Geothermal energy is a fundamental piece of the puzzle in the carbon-free energy transition necessary to mitigate adverse effects of climate change. In this context, so-called supercritical geothermal systems (where resident brine is above its critical point) can reach a power output of up to 50 MW per-well and are becoming a reality thanks to the research effort of the international community. Supercritical systems are inherently complex because of fluid and solid rheology and because of the non-linear couplings involved between pore pressure, temperature and deformation in the porous and fractured rock. In this contribution, we have performed finite element analyses of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) conditions in a supercritical geothermal system. The formulation employed includes a porosity-dependent permeability relationship that is derived through mass balance equations of the solid skeleton. The equations of state of water are based on IAPWS standards and span the whole range of temperature and pressure of interest in supercritical geothermal systems. We have analyzed an injection-production doublet scenario at 5.5 km depth, where the two wells are spaced 500 m apart and a major fault lies between them. When injecting in isothermal conditions, because of water mobility of the supercritical phase is higher than the liquid phase, minor perturbations are observed in the major fault. Seismicity increases rapidly following a pressure-diffusion response and only micro-seismicity is expected as the stress in the major fault shows minor changes. On the contrary, cold fluid injection generates large thermal-induced stress changes that diffuse following advective heat transport laws. Micro-seismicity is quickly triggered and, within 10 years in the current setting, the perturbation reaches the 250 m distant fault, where larger magnitude events are possible. Our findings bear important consequences in terms of safety of supercritical geothermal systems and proved that seismic response in amplified by re-injection-induced cooling.</span></p>
Evolution of Elastic–Plastic Characteristics of Rocks Within Middle-Deep Geothermal Reservoirs Under High Temperature

Abstract:Middle-deep geothermal reservoirs, rich in energy, experience deep burial, high temperature, and intense three-dimensional stresses, causing noticeable elastic–plastic rock deformation under high confining pressure. However, existing researches primarily focused on elastic–plastic properties under various confining pressures, overlooking the impact of high temperature on granite's behavior. To address this, we conducted compression experiments at seven temperature points (25–600 °C) under varying confining pressures (0–15 MPa). The results reveal that increasing confining pressure prolongs the plastic yielding stage, linearly enhances compressive strength, and shifts rupture mode from brittle to expansion shear damage. Conversely, under constant confining pressure, compressive strength decreases with rising temperature, accompanied by more intricate artificial cracks. Rock cohesion, internal friction angle, and wave velocity decrease due to increased thermal damage micro-cracks. Heat treatment over 500 °C significantly increases porosity and pore throat radius, explaining heightened plasticity in hot dry rocks. These findings offer theoretical and technical insights for understanding elastic–plastic fracture mechanisms during hydraulic fracturing in middle-deep geothermal reservoirs and enhancing heat recovery efficiency.

Creep Rupture and Permeability Evolution in High Temperature Heat-Treated Sandstone Containing Pre-Existing Twin Flaws

Abstract:Utilizing underground coal gasification cavities for carbon capture and sequestration provides a potentially economic and sustainable solution to a vexing environmental and energy problem. The thermal influence on creep properties and long-term permeability evolution around the underground gasification chamber is a key issue in UCG-CCS operation in containing fugitive emissions. We complete multi-step loading and unloading creep tests with permeability measurement at confining stresses of 30 MPa on pre-cracked sandstone specimens thermally heat-treated to 250, 500, 750 and 1000 °C. Observations indicate a critical threshold temperature of 500 °C required to initiate thermally-induced cracks with subsequent strength reduction occurring at 750 °C. Comparison of histories of creep, visco-elastic and visco-plastic strains highlight the existence of a strain jump at a certain deviatoric stress level—where the intervening rock bridge between the twin starter-cracks is eliminated. As the deviatoric stress level increases, the visco-plastic strains make up an important composition of total creep strain, especially for specimens pre-treated at higher temperatures, and the development of the visco-plastic strain leads to the time-dependent failure of the rock. The thermal pre-treatment produces thermal cracks with their closure resulting in increased instantaneous elastic strains and instantaneous plastic strains. With increasing stress ratio, the steady-state creep rates increase slowly before the failure stress ratio but rise suddenly over the final stress ratio to failure. However, the pre-treatment temperature has no clear and apparent influence on steady creep strain rates. Rock specimens subject to higher pre-treatment temperatures exhibit higher permeabilities. The pre-existing cracks close under compression with a coplanar shear crack propagating from the starter-cracks and ultimately linking these formerly separate cracks. In addition, it is clear that the specimens pre-treated at higher temperatures accommodate greater damage.

Abstract:Harnessing geothermal energy from an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) highly depends on fracture flow and heat transport processes. Thermal drawdown-induced thermal stress has been characterized as a major reason for severe fracture flow channeling (short-circuiting), which further leads to premature thermal breakthrough and impairs long-term thermal performance. In the present study, we quantitatively analyzed a potential flow channeling mitigation mechanism, i.e., the increase of water viscosity with temperature reduction. Through a field-scale single-fracture EGS model that incorporates thermal-hydro-mechanical coupled processes and temperature-dependent water viscosity, we demonstrate that the increase of water viscosity during heat extraction promotes a dispersed fracture flow pattern, which can effectively mitigate thermal drawdown-induced flow channeling and improve long-term thermal performance. The mitigation effect is more noticeable for homogeneous aperture scenarios than for heterogeneous aperture scenarios, especially in the early period of heat production. With a higher in-situ stress and smaller rock Young’s modulus, the flow channeling effect of thermal stress becomes weak, and therefore the temperature-dependent viscosity exhibits a more significant flow channeling mitigation effect. The results from the current study provide valuable insights into the optimization of fracture flow and heat transport to achieve more efficient and sustainable energy production from EGSs.
A thermo-flow-mechanics-fracture model coupling a phase-field interface approach and thermo-fluid-structure interaction

Abstract:Geothermal energy, a promising renewable source, relies on efficiently utilizing geothermal reservoirs, especially in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), where fractures in hot rock formations enhance permeability. Understanding fracture behavior, influenced by temperature changes, is crucial for optimizing energy extraction. To address this, we propose a novel high-accuracy phase-field interface model integrating temperature dynamics into a comprehensive hydraulic-mechanical approach, aiming for a thermo-fluid-structure interaction representation. Therein, the key technical development is a four-step algorithm. This consists of computing the fracture width, reconstructing the sharp interface geometry, solving the thermo-fluid-structure interaction (TFSI) problem, and employing a phase-field approach coupled to the temperature and pressure from the TFSI problem. By coupling temperature-hydraulic-mechanical processes with our newly proposed high-accuracy phase-field interface approach, we investigate how temperature impacts fracture width values, which are crucial for permeability in EGS reservoirs. Through this model and three different numerical simulations, we aim to provide an approach to deepen understanding of the complex interplay between temperature, mechanical deformation, and permeability evolution. Therein, we substantiate our formulations and algorithms through mesh convergence results of crack width and total crack volumes for static fractures, and crack lengths in the case of propagating fractures.

Geochemical, Mineralogical, and Fluid Processes in the Brittle‐Plastic Transition of Continental Crust

Abstract:The brittle‐plastic transition (BPT), the strongest part of the crust, is critical to continental geodynamics but is poorly understood relative to simpler crust above and below. It is typically represented as a depth transition from brittle/frictional to plastic/viscous deformation controlled by temperature and pressure. Footwalls of low‐angle normal faults (LANFs) exhumed through the BPT provide rock records that challenge this view. Three well‐studied LANF footwalls are reviewed. All record geochemical, mineralogical and fluid‐related controls on embrittlement, not just monotonic P‐T decrease. Two quartz‐rich examples record embrittlement at unexpectedly high T (≥450–500°C) that was modulated by wetting characteristics of fluids. One had an inverted BPT: brittle fracture beneath contemporaneous mylonites. In another study, a brittle LANF grew from plastic mylonites due to mineralogic changes that strengthened parts, causing initial frictional slip and cataclasis on weak planes that ultimately linked. In all, geologically abrupt small‐scale processes controlled behavior at kilometer scales. Similar processes likely affect other tectonic settings and seismic cycles. Such processes offer fertile research opportunities in continental geodynamics; they will be increasingly tractable as computational abilities improve. Adaptive, multi‐scale approaches including the effects of fluid‐rock geochemistry and mineralogical changes on rock strength and deformation are needed. Thoughtful modeling approaches may yield key insights into the positive and negative feedbacks that are likely. Discontinuous deformation is probably needed explicitly along with exploration of initial and boundary conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Supercritical geothermal systems are appealing sources of sustainable and carbon-free energy located in volcanic areas. Recent successes in drilling and exploration have opened new possibilities and spiked interest in this technology. Experimental and numerical studies have also confirmed the feasibility of creating fluid conducting fractures in sedimentary and crystalline rocks at high temperature, paving the road towards Enhanced Supercritical Geothermal Systems. Despite their attractiveness, several important questions regarding safe exploitation remain open. We dedicate this manuscript to the first thermo-hydro-mechanical numerical study of a doublet geothermal system in supercritical conditions. Here we show that thermally-induced stress and strain effects dominate the geomechanical response of supercritical systems compared to pore pressure-related instabilities, and greatly enhance seismicity during cold water re-injection. This finding has important consequences in the design of Supercritical Geothermal Systems.

Abstract:The exploitation of hydrothermal geothermal resources (HGR) in fault zone is one of the most promising technical schemes for geothermal energy development. To understand the hydraulic and mechanical behaviors of rock mass in fault zone, a series of thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) coupling tests of fault rocks were conducted, and the influence of the fault gouge content, water temperature, seepage pressure and stress on the permeability, porosity, secant Young's modulus, cohesion and internal friction angle of fault rocks was investigated. The results show the permeability evolution can be divided into four stages: slight decline stage, slight rise stage, steady increase stage and rapid increase stage. The porosity evolution can be classified into two stages: seepage dominant stage and axial compression dominant stage, and the time-varying law of porosity of cemented rock mass are significantly different. With the increase of content of fault gouge, the secant Young's modulus, cohesion and internal friction angle of fault rocks gradually increase; while the temperature has little significance on the three parameters. With the increase of seepage pressure, the secant Young's modulus, cohesion and internal friction angle decrease; while the three parameters increase accordingly with the increase of the axial and confining pressure. The research results enrich the study of THM coupling properties of fault rocks, and provide a theoretical basis for exploiting HGR by fault.

Fault slip in hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoirs: Governing mechanisms and process-structure interaction

Abstract:Hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoirs in low-permeability basement and crystalline igneous rock can enhance permeability by reactivation and shear dilation of existing fractures. The process is characterized by interaction between fluid flow, deformation, and the fractured structure of the formation. The flow is highly affected by the fracture network, which in turn is deformed because of hydromechanical stress changes caused by the fluid injection. This process-structure interaction is decisive for the outcome of hydraulic stimulation, and, in analysis of governing mechanisms, physics-based modeling has potential to complement field and experimental data. Here, we show how recently developed simulation technology is a valuable tool to understand governing mechanisms of hydromechanical coupled processes and the reactivation and deformation of faults. The methodology fully couples flow in faults and matrix with poroelastic matrix deformation and a contact mechanics model for the faults, including dilation because of slip. Key elements are high aspect ratios of faults and strong nonlinearities in highly coupled governing equations. Example simulations using our open-source software illustrate direct and indirect hydraulic fault reactivation and corresponding permeability enhancement. We investigate the effect of the fault and matrix permeability and the Biot coefficient. A higher matrix permeability leads to more leakage from a permeable fault and thus suppresses reactivation and slip of the fault compared to the case with a lower matrix permeability. If a fault is a barrier to flow, increase of pressure because of the fluid injection results in stabilization of the fault; the situation is opposite if the fault is highly permeable compared to the matrix. For the given setup, lowering the Biot coefficient results in more slip than the base case. While conceptually simple, the examples illustrate the strong hydromechanical couplings and the prospects of physics-based numerical models in investigating the dynamics.

Abstract:We develop a new fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) model to investigate the combined effects of thermal perturbation and in-situ stress on heat transfer in two-dimensional fractured rocks. We quantitatively analyze the influence of geomechanical boundary constraints and initial reservoir temperature on the evolutionary behavior of fracture aperture, fluid flow and heat transfer, and further identify the underlying mechanisms dominating the coupled THM processes. The results reveal that, apart from enhancing normal opening of fractures, the transient cooling effect of thermal front may trigger shear dilations under the anisotropic in-situ stress condition. It is found that the applied in-situ stress tends to impose a strong impact on the spatial and temporal variations of fracture apertures and flow rates, and eventually affect heat transfer. The enhancement of reservoir transmissivity during transient cooling tends to be significantly overestimated if the in-situ stress effect is not incorporated, which may lead to unrealistic predictions of heat extraction performance. Our study also provides physical insights into a fundamental thermo-poroelastic behavior of fractured rocks, where fracture aperture evolution during heat extraction tends to be simultaneously governed by two mechanisms: (1) thermal expansion-induced local aperture enlargement and (2) thermal propagation-induced remote aperture variation (can either increase or decrease). The results from our study have important implications for optimizing heat extraction efficiency and managing seismic hazards during fluid injections in geothermal reservoirs.
