Abstract:Tellurium (Te) is a Critical Mineral and its biogeochemical behaviour has mostly been interpreted from laboratory-based studies rather than direct field observations, due to the scarcity of Te in the environment. The historic mining district of Moctezuma, Sonora, Mexico, hosts the only Au mine worldwide where native tellurium is the main ore mineral (Bambolla mine). In contrast to Bambolla, the nearby San Miguel mine features a typical epithermal-style assemblage of silver sulfides, selenides, and tellurides; this dichotomy provides comparative sites to study environmental Te mobility during weathering as a function of source composition (same host rock and climate). This study characterised the regolith geochemistry, mineralogy and microbial diversity around these two Te-enriched sites. Scanning electron microscopy of fresh mineral surfaces from the weathering zone suggests that Te was released to the environment through oxidative dissolution of primary Te minerals, especially native tellurium at Bambolla. Micron-scale gold grains (<100 μm) in regolith samples have morphologies consistent with the dealloying of the gold telluride calaverite (AuTe2). Secondary Te minerals observed in situ include abundant tellurite (TeO2) and highly Te-enriched Fe (hydr)oxides, which may contain up to 20mole% Te substitution for Fe. The presence of residual organic material in association with embedded secondary nano-minerals suggests that Te (bio)transformation processes were likely associated with weathering. In particular, carbon-rich globules on the surface of millimetre-sized grains of native tellurium contain abundant Te nanoparticles, suggestive of bioreduction. DNA extraction and sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene revealed that the Te-enriched (up to 1750 ppm) regolith proximal to the Te-rich veins hosted microbial communities with varying composition but similar overall diversity compared to regolith collected from distal locations (more than 50 m from the mineralised veins). Of the detected bacterial Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) from Te-rich regolith which could play an active role in Te (bio)transformation processes, representatives from the phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria were the most abundant, followed by Firmicutes, candidate phylum WPS-2, Chloroflexi, Planctomycetes and Patescibacteria. This study provides the first evidence that Te undergoes dynamic cycling in the environment, with nanoscale chemical and structural changes governing the biogeochemical behaviour of Te on the macroscale. In doing so, this work provides important information on the underlying controls for Te mobility in both environmental settings, such as Te-rich rock outcrops and anthropogenic settings, such as Te-containing solar panel stockpiles.

Technetium reduction and reoxidation behaviour in Dounreay soils

Abstract:Abstract Technetium is a radioactive contaminant found in groundwaters at sites where nuclear wastes have been processed or stored. The redox chemistry of technetium is a major control on its environmental mobility. Under oxic conditions, technetium exists as the pertechnetate ion, Tc(VII)O 4 − , which is poorly sorbed by minerals across a wide range of environmentally relevant pH values. Under reducing conditions pertechnetate is converted to lower valency species, of which Tc(IV) tends to predominate. Typically, the Tc(IV) oxidation state readily precipitates as insoluble hydrous Tc(IV) oxides or, at low concentrations, is removed from solution by association with mineral surfaces. Here, we present novel X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data examining Tc associations with reduced Dounreay soils. In reduced unamended microcosms and in microcosms where we added the co-contaminants ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or bicarbonate to investigate their effect on Tc biogeochemistry, Tc was removed from solution on exposure to the reduced sediments and was present on solids as hydrous Tc(IV)O 2 -like phases. Furthermore, to investigate the long term stability and remobilization of solid phase associated Tc in reduced soils, we reoxidized reduced, Tc(IV)-labeled soils, in the presence of air and nitrate. The extent of remobilization of Tc to solution was dependent on the oxidant used. After reoxidation with air for 60 d, (42±6)% of the initial soil bound Tc was resolubilized. In the presence of 25 or 100 mmol L −1 nitrate as an oxidant, negligible microcosm reoxidation or remobilization of Tc to solution occurred. XAS analysis of soils treated with the two oxidants showed that in both systems, the remaining soil associated Tc was present as hydrous TcO 2 -like phases. The recalcitrance of Tc remobilization under reoxidizing conditions has implications for the fate of Tc in contaminated environments.

Abstract:As a potential Te reservoir for the global budget, the occurrence, material sources, migration and enrichment mechanism of Te in deep-sea sediments remain unclear. Based on the major and trace elements measurements of bulk sediments, this study proposed a procedure to quantify the contribution of Te by main host minerals, combining with TIMA and LA-ICP-MS in two cores (GC04 and GC11) from the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) and a core from east of the 90 degrees E Ridge (GC03). Te shows the highest enrichment coefficient of 650 referred to UCC (Upper Continental Crust) in the REY (Rare Earth Elements and Yittrium) rich sediments in GC04, GC11 and GC02 (a core at the south of GC04 and GC11). Clinoptilolite-K and osumilite are indicated as the main host minerals, which correlates Te sources with volcanogenic materials and weathering products of terrigenous rocks. The inter elements correlation, cluster analysis and factors analysis further indicate distinct hydrothermal genetic Te. So, we put forward a hypothesis that Te is mainly sourced from the submarine volcanogenic hydrothermal activities, which are closely associated with local intraplate volcanism episodes from late Miocene with spatial and temporal differences. This study is the first attempt to quantify Te from different minerals and to reveal its geochemical behavior in the deep sea sediments, which will be benefit to the understanding of Te reservoir and cycle in deep sea and the comprehensive utilization of REY-rich deep-sea sediments. However, for the abundant presence of undetectable nanoscale minerals in these sediments, the contribution of Fe-Mn (oxyhydr) oxides and clay minerals of Te need more investigation.
Acceleration mechanism of bioavailable Fe(III) on Te(IV) bioreduction of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1: Promotion of electron generation, electron transfer and energy level

Abstract:<p>The release of highly toxic tellurite into the aquatic environment poses significant environmental risks. The acceleration mechanism and tellurium nanorods (TeNPs) characteristics with bioavailable ferric citrate (Fe(III)) were investigated in the tellurite (Te(IV)) bioreduction. Experiments showed that 5 mM Fe(III) increased the Te(IV) bioreduction rate from 0 to 12.40 mg/(L·h). Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel were used to investigate electron transfer during Te(IV) bioreduction. NADH production (electron production) was significantly enhanced to 138% by Fe(III). Meanwhile Fe(III) stimulated the increase of cytochrome <em>c</em>, resulting in increased electron transport system activity. In addition, Fe(III) facilitated the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and reduced cell membrane permeability, thus reducing the toxicity of Te(IV) to cells. The increase of ATP provided energy for the metabolic process of Te(IV) bioreduction, playing an active role in cell activity. Based on the above analysis, the acceleration mechanism of Fe(III) on Te(IV) bioreduction was proposed from the aspects of electron generation, electron transfer and energy level. Zeta potential and FT-IR spectra indicated that the stability of TeNPs contributed to the covered EPS. This study provides further understanding the acceleration mechanism of Te(IV) bioreduction and promising strategy for improving the stability of TeNPs.</p>

In order to take advantage of this technology, a desired gene must first be obtained and cloned in a suitable host organism. The foreign gene must then be efficiently expressed. In many cases, the foreign gene product must then be isolated. Results obtained through cloning and expressing the chicken ovalbumin gene in microorganisms can be used to demonstrate both the power of this technology and its present limitations.

Abstract:This study reports the chemical fractionation of several potentially toxic elements (Zn, Pb, Cd, As, and Sb) in contaminated technosoils of two former smelting and mining areas using two sequential extraction schemes. The extraction schemes used in this study were the Tessier’s scheme and a modified BCR scheme. The fractions were rearranged into four equivalent fractions defined as acid soluble, reducible, oxidizable, and residual to compare the results obtained from two sequential extraction schemes. Surface soils were samples from a waste landfill contaminated with Zn, Pb, and Cd located at Mortagne-du-Nord (MDN; North France) and from a settling basin contaminated with PTE such as As, Pb, and Sb located at La Petite Faye (LPF; Limoges, France). The study of the Zn, Pb, Cd, As, and Sb partitioning in the acid soluble, reducible, oxidizable, and residual fractions of the technosoils revealed that Zn, Cd, and Pb were mainly associated with the acid soluble and reducible fractions for MDN site, while As, Sb, and Pb were associated with residual fraction for LPF site. Fractionation results indicate that the percentages of Zn, Pb, Cd, As, and Sb extracted in Fe–Mn oxide bound fraction of Tessier’s scheme were always higher than those extracted by modified BCR scheme. This may be attributed to the stronger Tessier’s scheme conditions used to extract this fraction. In contrast the percentages of Zn, Pb, Cd, As, and Sb extracted in the organic fraction of the modified BCR scheme were always higher than those of the Tessier’s scheme. The order of mobility of PTE was as follows: Cd > Zn > Pb in MDN site and As > Sb > Pb in LPF site. PTE were distributed in all soil fractions, with the most relevant enrichments in extractable and residual fractions. A significant amount of Cd, Pb, and Zn were rather mobile, which suggests that these elements can be readily available to plants and soil organisms.

Technetium reduction in sediments of a shallow aquifer exhibiting dissimilatory iron reduction potential

Abstract:Pertechnetate ion [Tc(VII)O(4) (-)] reduction rate was determined in core samples from a shallow sandy aquifer located on the US Atlantic Coastal Plain. The aquifer is generally low in dissolved O(2) (<1 mg L(-1)) and composed of weakly indurated late Pleistocene sediments differing markedly in physicochemical properties. Thermodynamic calculations, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and statistical analyses were used to establish the dominant reduction mechanisms, constraints on Tc solubility, and the oxidation state, and speciation of sediment reduction products. The extent of Tc(VII) reduction differed markedly between sediments (ranging from 0% to 100% after 10 days of equilibration), with low solubility Tc(IV) hydrous oxide the major solid phase reduction product. The dominant electron donor in the sediments proved to be (0.5 M HCl extractable) Fe(II). Sediment Fe(II)/Tc(VII) concentrations >4.3 were generally sufficient for complete reduction of Tc(VII) added [1-2.5 micromol (dry wt. sediment) g(-1)]. At these Fe(II) concentrations, the Tc (VII) reduction rate exceeded that observed previously for Fe(II)-mediated reduction on isolated solids of geologic or biogenic origin, suggesting that sediment Fe(II) was either more reactive and/or that electron shuttles played a role in sediment Tc(VII) reduction processes. In buried peats, Fe(II) in excess did not result in complete removal of Tc from solution, perhaps because organic complexation of Tc(IV) limited formation of the Tc(IV) hydrous oxide. In some sands exhibiting Fe(II)/Tc(VII) concentrations <1.1, there was presumptive evidence for direct enzymatic reduction of Tc(VII). Addition of organic electron donors (acetate, lactate) resulted in microbial reduction of (up to 35%) Fe(III) and corresponding increases in extractable Fe(II) in sands that exhibited lowest initial Tc(VII) reduction and highest hydraulic conductivities, suggesting that accelerated microbial reduction of Fe(III) could offer a viable means of attenuating mobile Tc(VII) in this type of sediment system.

Abstract:A natural black soil (BS) was treated to obtain three individual soils referred to as removed organic matter (ROM), removed metal oxide (ROX) and humic acid (HA), and the sorption behaviors of tetracycline (TC) and heavy metals (Cu2+ and Cd2+) on BS and three treated soils were investigated to evaluate the role and contribution of different soil components (organic matter, clay and metal oxide). The three treated soils all showed stronger sorption capacities toward TC than BS, and the sorption amount of ROM, ROX, and HA for TC was greater than that of BS by 1.2 times, 2.3 times, and 3.3 times at an initial TC concentration of 25 mg L-1. Differently, the sorption capacity of BS for Cu2+ and Cd2+ was stronger than that of ROM. The multiple linear regression analysis suggested that soil organic matter made the greatest contribution toward the sorption of TC, whereas, metal oxide was the key component influencing the sorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+. The presence of Cu2+ enhanced the TC sorption of BS, ROM and ROX, but had a suppression effect on HA because of the competition of Cu2+. The presence of Cd2+ did not exert obvious effects on TC sorption of BS, but exhibited a suppression effect on TC sorption of ROM, ROX and HA, which was likely to relate to the surface potentials of the soils. The results in this study are expected to give an insight into the role of different soil components in the sorption and co-sorption of TC and heavy metal through a mathematical model and to reveal the sorption mechanism.

Abstract:Tellurium (Te) is the heaviest stable chalcogen and is a rare element in Earth’s crust (one to five ppb). It was discovered in gold ore from mines in Kleinschlatten near the present-day city of Zlatna, Romania. Industrial and other applications of Te focus on its inorganic forms. Tellurium can be toxic to animals and humans at low doses. Chronic tellurium poisoning endangers the kidney, liver, and nervous system. However, Te can be effective against bacteria and is able to destroy cancer cells. Tellurium can also be used to develop redox modulators and enzyme inhibitors. Soluble salts that contain Te had a role as therapeutic and antimicrobial agents before the advent of antibiotics. The pharmaceutical use of Te is not widespread due to the narrow margin between beneficial and toxic doses, but there are differences between the measure of toxicity based on the Te form. Nano-tellurium (Te-NPs) has several applications: it can act as an adsorptive agent to remove pollutants, and it can be used in antibacterial coating, photo-catalysis for the degradation of dyes, and conductive electronic materials. Nano-sized Te particles are the most promising and can be produced in both chemical and biological ways. Safety assessments are essential to determine the potential risks and benefits of using Te compounds in various applications. Future challenges and directions in developing nano-materials, nano-alloys, and nano-structures based on Te are still open to debate.

Abstract:A set of experiments was performed to determine the factors that influence TcO4(-) interaction with Fe-bearing minerals and to explore the effect of microbial activity on the behaviour of Tc(VII) in solution, in the presence of iron oxides under oxidizing medium. Gradual sorption of TcO4(-) (aq) onto wustite/magnetite was observed under alkaline conditions (pH 8-9). No pronounced effect of TcO4(-) (aq) interaction with hematite was observed in the investigating alkaline systems. At low pH values (2.7-4.5), TcO4(-) retention on hematite increases, suggesting that the process is dependent on pH. Sorption of (99)Tc (VII) onto hematite at pH 7.6-8.0 was achieved because of the presence of specific microorganisms.
Size-resolved distribution of trace elements in lysimeter soil solutions under contrasting long-term agricultural management to assess their bioavailability

Abstract:The chemical species of trace elements (TEs) in agricultural soils is highly variable under diverse conditions, requiring tools with clear resolution and minimal disturbance for exploration. A novel surgical (316L) stainless steel (SS) lysimeter with a 5 μm pore size was developed to collect field soil solutions. The size-resolved distribution of TEs were characterized into total (nitric acid digestion), particulate (0.45-5 μm), dissolved (<0.45 μm), colloidal (1 kDa to 0.45 μm), and mainly ionic (<1 kDa) fractions in the lysimeter soil solutions. Total concentrations of TEs (dry weight basis) in acid digested Gray Luvisolic soils were analyzed. Most TEs in lysimeter soil solutions were present in particulate phases, relevant to their geochemical affinities and occurrences in soil minerals. Among dissolved fractions, As, Ba, Co, Li, Mn, Tl, and V existed as mainly ionic species in the soil solutions. Copper, Pb, Al, Th, and U showed variable associations with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and/or inorganic colloids among agricultural treatments. Inorganic NPKS or NKS fertilizer applications with lower pH (5.25-5.74) enhanced mobility and potential bioavailability of Ba, Co, Li, Mn, and Pb present in mainly ionic species, compared with other locations (pH 5.82-6.37). Manure application exhibited a dual effect, potentially increasing bioavailability for As, Tl, and V due to probably enhanced cation exchange capacity (CEC), while also facilitating specific adsorption of Cu and U on DOM, potentially reducing their bioavailability depending on DOM molecular weight. Colloidal and ionic Al and Th concentrations were higher in forest soils than agricultural soils, with extremely low potential bioavailability of Th attributed to strong precipitation with inorganic colloids and adsorption on DOM. The lysimeter sampling and size fractionation method provided a clear insight into agricultural effects on TE distributions and enhancing understanding of agricultural soil health in terms of TE bioavailability in situ.

Abstract:The effects of changes in environmental temperatures on the immobilization or removal of cationic potentially toxic elements (PTE) in heavily polluted soils are often poorly understood, although both are widely studied in the context of phytostabilization. To address this issue, a novel compost-diatomite hybrid (CDH) amendment was developed and applied for assisted phytostabilization at two external temperature regimes. (Cd/Ni/Cu/Zn)-extremely polluted soils (unenriched and CDH-enriched) were cultivated with perennial ryegrass and native soil microbiome under greenhouse conditions and then transferred to freeze-thaw conditions (FTC). The decrease in metal potential toxicity in soils subjected to phytostabilization following both temperature treatments was characterized by a combination of sequential extraction and atomic absorption measurements. The soil microbiome was characterized by high-throughput sequencing. In a relative comparison, the greatest decrease in the content of all PTEs in CDH-enriched soil (compared to unenriched soil) appeared in FTC. Furthermore, under the influence of FTC, in the relative comparison between two CDH-enriched soils (exposed-, and not-exposed- to FTC) and two unenriched soils (exposed-, and not-exposed- to FTC), the content of all PTEs decreased more sharply in the CDH-enriched series than in the unenriched series. The largest redistribution into four sequentially extracted fractions in CDH-enriched soil was found for Zn. Based on the distribution pattern, Zn immobilization was greater in CDH-enriched soil in FTC. CDH increased species richness in the soil, while FTC stimulated the growth of Bacteroidia, Alphaproteobacteria, Theromomicrobia, and Gammaproteobacteria. The analysis of the functionalities of the microbiome indicated enhanced metal transportation and defense systems in samples exposed to FTC. The current research is crucial for understanding how extreme environmental conditions in both cases high pollutant levels and low temperatures affect the movement and transformation of PTEs in polluted soils during phytostabilization.

The chemical and phase composition as well as the concentrations and mobility of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in research material with varying levels of weathering were determined using instrumental (XRF, XRD) and chemical methods (extractions: BCR, aqua regia, water leaching, 0.05 M EDTA). It was demonstrated that the predominant minerals in the weathering crust include weathering-resistant minerals (i.e. quartz and muscovite) and secondary minerals (kaolinite, illite and interstratified minerals, vermiculite/chlorite) and that the predominant processes are hydrolysis and oxidation. The weathering process has an impact on the complexity of the chemical and mineral composition and the diverse structure of the weathering crust. A layer of Fe and Al oxides and hydroxides forms in the upper part of the weathering crust, while the amount of silica decreases. Low-mobility elements (i.e. Si, Al and Fe) react on the phase separation surface, causing the formation of clay minerals (i.e. vermiculite, montmorillonite) or Al and Fe hydroxides (e.g. goethite). The duration of weathering causes an increase in the content of PTEs in solid materials: multifold in the case of Cr (15), Ba (9), Pb (7), Zn (6) and considerably lower in the case of V (1.3), Sr (0.8) and Co (0.4). It was demonstrated that PTEs co-occur in several chemical fractions in the weathering crust and that the highest share of their total concentration are cations incorporated in the crystal lattice of minerals and bound by strong crystalline bonds (F4 46%). The lowest share was observed for the reducible fraction (9%) and the share of the oxidizable fraction was 29% The most mobile cations connected by the weakest bonds comprised only 16% of the total concentration. Based on the content of the readily soluble fraction of PTEs, it was concluded that the degree of weathering does not increase the environmental risk, but actually reduces it for Cr, Cr and Pb. The obtained Ecological Risk Index (ERI) values indicate that the ecological risk associated with the elements tested is low for the entire area, which means that natural weathering processes do not have any impact on environmental pollution.

Abstract:The study is focused on one of the technology-critical elements (TCEs), Pt in the context of distinguishing ionic from metallic forms and assessing sorption capacity of soil. Solid-liquid extraction, cross-comparison of the results of two determination techniques and two decomposition methods enable quantitative determination of the ionic form and, indirectly, NPs in soil and plants. Information about ionic form is obtained after sample digestion with conc. HNO 3 and AdSV determination, and total Pt content is determined after digestion using mixture of conc. HNO 3 and conc. HCl. The recovery of Pt was in the range 99–110 % for both forms. The mobility (0.43 mol L −1 HAc) of Pt-NPs and Pt (II) was below 1 % even in the presence of citrates (after 2 month incubation). The long-term sorption study indicated that Pt retention (both forms) in the organic soil is related to formation of organic complexes, and the equilibrium is achieved after 2 days. When the soil is enriched in Fe 2 O 3 , stronger sorption is observed up to 2 days for both Pt forms (the mobility is 9–14 pp. lower), to finally achieve similar sorption as without modification, reaching 89/90 % for incubation with DI water, and 81/85 % with citrates. The addition of biocarbon/biochar does not play an important role in immobilization of Pt (II) and Pt-NPs.

Abstract:In this work, syringe membrane micro-solid phase extraction (SMMSPE) was described for the enrichment and separation of Te(IV) and Te(VI) prior to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry detection. SMMSPE device is composed of a syringe and a disk filter, which was filled with flexible titanium(IV) oxide@silica nanofiber membrane as the sorbent. The adsorption behavior of Te(IV) and Te(VI) on the sorbent was studied in detail. The results showed that Te(IV) was quantitatively adsorbed on the sorbent in the pH range of 3.0-5.0, while Te(VI) remained in the aqueous phase. Te(VI) content was obtained by subtracting Te(IV) from total Te concentration. Total Te was detected after reducing Te(VI) into Te(IV). The key factors affecting the extraction efficiency and determination of target species were investigated. Under the selected conditions, the limit of detection was 1.8 ng L −1 for Te(IV). The precision expressed as relative standard deviation was 5.7% (n = 9). This method was utilized for the determination of Te(IV) and Te(VI) in environmental water samples with satisfactory results. To verify this method, a certified reference material of water sample was analyzed, and the obtained result was in good agreement with the certified value. Besides, the developed sorbent exhibited good efficiency, flexibility and recyclability.

Abstract:Little information is available on the occurrence patterns of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) controlling their release behaviors, according to the results from leaching tests , multidisciplinary characterization and geochemical modeling. In this study, the occurrence characteristics of PTEs were dentified by combining Tessier results with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and their main release mechanisms were elucidated based on geochemical modeling results from PHREEQC software. The results indicated that 0–17.69% of As, 0–27.90% of Pb and 0–82.17% of Zn were hosted in the non–reactive silicate minerals, respectively, while 82.31–100 % of As, 0–100 % of Pb and 17.82–100% of Zn were hosted in the reactive minerals, respectively. Among these studied metals, 45.78–81.73% of Cd was mainly associated with the labile fractions. PTEs presented highly pH and acidity–dependent leaching characteristics. Acidification prediction results indicated that soil pH could decrease to a value of 6 within a wide time range of 15–388 years. PTEs release were mainly controlled by the dissolution of metal–rich oxide and carbonate mineral phases, as well as the adsorption/desorption and co–precipitation/dissolution of Fe, Mn and Al bearing oxyhydroxide minerals and the complexation of dissolved organic matter (DOM). These findings would extend the knowledge to the scenario based leaching assessment studies of smelter contaminated soils.

Abstract:Technetium (Tc-99) typically exists as pertechnetate (TcO4-) and hydrated oxide (TcO2 center dot nH(2)O) in soil and groundwater. While the former, Tc(VII), is very soluble and mobile in the environment, the latter is considered sparingly soluble and immobile. Consequently, immobilization of Tc(VII) can be achieved through conversion of Tc(VII) into Tc(IV). In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) stabilized FeS nanoparticles (CMC-FeS) were prepared and tested for reductive immobilization of Tc(VII). Effects of nanoparticle dosage and water chemistry, including pH, humic acid and Ca2+ ions, were examined. At a dosage of 100 mg/L of CMC-FeS as Fe, CMC-FeS rapidly removed > 96% of 1.2 mu M of Tc(VII) within 1 h, with a retarded first-order rate constant (k(a)) of 150.32 h(-1). Higher pH in the range of 5.0-9.0 favored the reaction, with an optimal pH range of 8.0-9.0. While Ca2+ (up to 2 mM) only modestly affected the Tc(VII) removal, high concentrations of humic acid (up to 10 mg/L as TOC) showed increased inhibition on the Tc(VII) removal rate. FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that CMC-FeS immobilized TcO4- through reductive conversion of TcO4- into TcO2(s) and formation of Tc2S7 precipitate. The immobilized Tc remained insoluble when aged for 100 days under anoxic conditions, whereas up to 22.9% of the immobilized Tc was remobilized when it was exposed to air for 100 days.
