Abstract:Wearable sweat sensing technologies have received wide attention for personalized health monitoring with continuous and molecular-level insight in a noninvasive manner. However, it remains significantly challenging to simultaneously capture a sufficient volume of sweat and achieve stable contact between electrodes and sweat, especially in a relatively mild sweating condition. Herein, a wearable electrochemical fabric sensor is developed by embroidering diversified sensing yarns with a multi-ply cotton sheath and carbon nanotube-based sensing fiber core into a super-hydrophobic fabric substrate. The device allows for sweat enrichment among the core-sheath sensing yarn and reduce ineffective diffusion, thus remarkably increasing the sweat capture efficiency. As a result, only 0.5 mu L of sweat is needed to achieve stable circuit connectivity, 1/20 of the lowest volume reported to date. The device also maintains a highly durable sensing performance, obtained even during dynamic deformation processes such as bending, twisting, and shaking. It can be further designed into an integrated sports shirt system, which can perform real-time monitoring of multiple chemical information (e.g., glucose, Na+, K+, and pH) of sweat for users at the states of both intense exercise conditions such as badminton and relatively mild conditions like walking and eating.

Abstract:Capabilities in health monitoring enabled by capture and quantitative chemical analysis of sweat could complement, or potentially obviate the need for, approaches based on sporadic assessment of blood samples. Established sweat monitoring technologies use simple fabric swatches and are limited to basic analysis in controlled laboratory or hospital settings. We present a collection of materials and device designs for soft, flexible, and stretchable microfluidic systems, including embodiments that integrate wireless communication electronics, which can intimately and robustly bond to the surface of the skin without chemical and mechanical irritation. This integration defines access points for a small set of sweat glands such that perspiration spontaneously initiates routing of sweat through a microfluidic network and set of reservoirs. Embedded chemical analyses respond in colorimetric fashion to markers such as chloride and hydronium ions, glucose, and lactate. Wireless interfaces to digital image capture hardware serve as a means for quantitation. Human studies demonstrated the functionality of this microfluidic device during fitness cycling in a controlled environment and during long-distance bicycle racing in arid, outdoor conditions. The results include quantitative values for sweat rate, total sweat loss, pH, and concentration of chloride and lactate.

Abstract:Inspired by the phenomenon of perspiration from sweat pores, a nanofiber membrane with a structure resembling sweat pore‐like arrays is designed to facilitate directional sweat transport. The channels imitating sweat pores enable an exceptionally rapid transport speed of 240 g s−1 m−2, while the surrounding region effectively prevents the backflow of sweat. Additionally, a smartphone‐based colorimetric analysis system is integrated for simultaneous detection of biomarkers. Functional fabric with directional sweat transport and simultaneous sweat detection is highly desirable in daily life due to its crucial role in ensuring exercise comfort and promoting health. Herein, the inspiration is drawn from both the perspiration function of sweat pores and the backflow prevention feature of the surrounding solid skin to develop bioinspired hydrophobic nanofiber fabric. When combined with commercial cotton, this fabric enables rapid discharge of sweat through the sweat pore‐like channels at an ultrafast speed of 240 g s−1 m−2, while effectively preventing backflow around these channels to ensure highly efficient personal drying. The performance of the bioinspired nanofiber fabric surpasses that of five commercially available moisture‐wicking fabrics by effectively guiding liquid transport while minimizing residual moisture accumulation on the inner side. Furthermore, a colorimetric analysis system is integrated into the bioinspired nanofiber fabric, which facilitates convenient sampling of sweat samples and detection of biomarkers in sweat such as chloride ion, calcium ion, and pH level. This innovative design based on the concept of sweat pores opens up new possibilities for developing intelligent fabrics, electronic skins, and point‐of‐care devices.

Abstract:The yarn-based sweat-activated battery (SAB) is a promising energy source for textile electronics due to its excellent skin compatibility, great weavability, and stable electric output. However, its power density is too low to support real-time monitoring and wireless data transmission. Here, we developed a scalable, high-performance sweat-based yarn biosupercapacitor (SYBSC) with two symmetrically aligned electrodes made by wrapping hydrophilic cotton fibers on polypyrrole/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate)-modified stainless steel yarns. Once activated with artificial sweat, the SYBSC could offer a high areal capacitance of 343.1 mF cm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 . After 10,000 times of bending under continuous charge-discharge cycles and 25 cycles of machine washing, the device could retain the capacitance at rates of 68% and 73%, respectively. The SYBSCs were integrated with yarn-shaped SABs to produce hybrid self-charging power units. The hybrid units, pH sensing fibers, and a mini-analyzer were woven into a sweat-activated all-in-one sensing textile, in which the hybrid, self-charging units could power the analyzer for real-time data collection and wireless transmission. The all-in-one electronic textile could be successfully employed to real-time monitor the pH values of the volunteers' sweat during exercise. This work can promote the development of self-charging electronic textiles for monitoring human healthcare and exercise intensity.

Abstract:Sweat is an important biofluid with rich physiological information that can evaluate human health condition. Wearable sweat sensors have received widespread attention in recent years due to the benefits of non-invasive, continuous, and real-time monitoring. Currently, an efficient device integrating sweat collection and detection is still needed. Here, a wearable sweat microfluidic system was fabricated for real-time collection and analysis of sweat. The fabricated microfluidic system consisted of four layers, including a skin adhesive layer, a microfluidic layer, an electrode layer, and a capping layer. The sweat collection rate was around 0.79 μL/min, which demonstrated efficient sweat sampling, storage, and refreshing capabilities. Simultaneous detection of multiple sweat biomarkers was achieved with a screen-printed sweat sensing array, which could realize high-precision detection of Na + , K + , and glucose. Moreover, the sensing array also showed good repeatability and stability, with a relative standard deviation of sensitivity of less than 5%. Additionally, human testing was conducted to demonstrate that this microfluidic system can continuously monitor Na + , K + , and glucose in subjects' sweat during exercise, which showed high potential for non-invasive human health monitoring.

Abstract:Wearable sweat electrochemical sensors have attracted wide attention due to their advantages of non-invasive, portable, real-time monitoring, etc. However, existing sensors still have some problems with efficient sweat collection. Microfluidic channel technology and electrospinning technology are commonly used to collect sweat efficiently, but there are some limitations such as complex channel design and multiple spinning parameters. Besides, existing sensors are mostly based on flexible polymers, such as, PET, PDMS, PI and PI, which have limited wearability and permeability. Based on the above, all fabric and dual-function flexible wearable sweat electrochemical sensor is proposed in this paper. This sensor uses fabric as the raw material to implement the directional transport of sweat and the multi-component integrated detection dual functions. Meanwhile, the high-efficiency collection of sweat is obtained by a Janus fabric, wherein one side of the selected silk is superhydrophobic graft treated and the other side is hydrophilic plasma treated. Therefore, the resulting Janus fabric can effectively transfer sweat from the skin side to the electrode, and the minimum sweat droplet can reach 0.2 μL to achieve micro-volume collection. Besides, the patterned sensor, made of silk-based carbon cloth, is fabricated using a simple laser engraving, which could detect Na + , pH, and glucose instantaneously. As a result, these proposed sensors can achieve good sensing performance and high-efficiency sweat collection dual functionality; moreover, it has good flexibility and comfortable wearability.

Abstract:A wearable sweat sensing patch is achieved by vapor deposition and micropatterning of superwettable polymer nanocone arrays on PDMS microfluidics. The superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic nanoarray surfaces provide a synergistic effect to facilitate rapid sweat collection, enabling efficient and sensitive detection of perspired sweat on different body parts. Wearable sweat sensor offers a promising means for noninvasive real‐time health monitoring, but the efficient collection and accurate analysis of sweat remains challenging. One of the obstacles is to precisely modulate the surface wettability of the microfluidics to achieve efficient sweat collection. Here a facile initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) method is presented to grow and pattern polymer nanocone arrays with distinct superwettability on polydimethylsiloxane microfluidics, which facilitate highly efficient sweat transportation and collection. The nanoarray is synthesized by manipulating monomer supersaturation during iCVD to induce controlled nucleation and preferential vertical growth of fluorinated polymer. Subsequent selective vapor deposition of a conformal hydrogel nanolayer results in superhydrophilic nanoarray floor and walls within the microchannel that provide a large capillary force and a superhydrophobic ceiling that drastically reduces flow friction, enabling rapid sweat transport along varied flow directions. A carbon/hydrogel/enzyme nanocomposite electrode is then fabricated by sequential deposition of highly porous carbon nanoparticles and hydrogel nanocoating to achieve sensitive and stable sweat detection. Further encapsulation of the assembled sweatsensing patch with superhydrophobic nanoarray imparts self‐cleaning and water‐proof capability. Finally, the sweat sensing patch demonstrates selective and sensitive glucose and lactate detection during the on‐body test.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors provide real-time monitoring of biomarkers, enabling individuals to gain real-time insight into their health status. Current sensors primarily rely on electrochemical mechanisms, limiting their capacity for the concurrent detection of multiple analytes. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy offers an alternative approach by providing molecular fingerprint information to facilitate the identification of intricate analytes. In this study, we combine a wearable Janus fabric for efficient sweat collection and a grapefruit optical fiber embedded with Ag nanoparticles as a sensitive SERS probe. The Janus fabric features a superhydrophobic side in contact with the skin and patterned superhydrophilic regions on the opposite surface, facilitating the unidirectional flow of sweat toward these hydrophilic zones. Grapefruit optical fibers feature sharp tips with the ability to penetrate transparent dressings. Its microchannels extract sweat through capillary force, and nanoliter-scale volumes of sweat are sufficient to completely fill them. The Raman signal of sweat components is greatly enhanced by the plasmonic hot spots and accumulates along the fiber length. We demonstrate sensitive detection of sodium lactate and urea in sweat with a detection limit much lower than the physiological concentration levels. Moreover, the platform shows its capability for multicomponent detection and extends to the analysis of real human sweat.

Abstract:Breathable and comfortable sensing textiles that can detect multi-biomarkers existing in human sweat are a promising way to achieve comprehensive health monitoring in our daily life. However, current wearable and flexible electrochemical textiles lack stretchability, which can result in unstable signals or device damage during movement. Additionally, these textiles have limited integration of multiple indicators, needing a large surface area and a significant amount of sweat to activate the sensors. Herein, we report an integrated all-in-one multifunctional electrochemical biosensor fiber constructed with a helical core-sheath structure, offering the stretchability and ability to detect biomarkers with trace amounts of sweat. The biosensor was fabricated by arranging multi-functionalized carbon nanotube strips in a spiral pattern alongside a pre-stretched polymer fiber core acting as microelectrodes with robust interface. Additionally, a super-hydrophilic sheath layer is incorporated to enhance the sweat capture efficiency of the biosensor. The biosensor has the capability to simultaneously monitor six biomarkers including pH, K + , Na + , glucose, lactate and uric acid, demonstrating stable sensing performance under 300% strain. Merely 1 of sweat is needed to initiate the detection of all six biomarkers. The resulting textile sensing system presents continuous and real-time monitoring of multi-biomarker information, allowing for the assessment of our health condition.

Abstract:Stretchable sweat sensors have become a personalized wearable platform for continuous, noninvasive health monitoring through conformal integration with the human body. Typically, these devices are coupled with soft microfluidic systems to control sweat flow during advanced analysis processes. However, the implementation of these soft microfluidic devices is limited by their high fabrication costs and the need for skin adhesives to block natural perspiration. To overcome these limitations, a stretchable and smart wettable patch has been proposed for multiplexed in situ perspiration analysis. The patch includes a porous membrane in the form of a patterned microfoam and a nanofiber layer laminate, which extracts sweat selectively from the skin and directs its continuous flow across the device. The integrated electrochemical sensor array measures multiple biomarkers simultaneously such as pH, K+, and Na+. The soft sensing patch comprises compliant materials and structures that allow deformability of up to 50% strain, which enables a stable and seamless interface with the curvilinear human body. During continuous physical exercise, the device has demonstrated a special operating mode by actively accumulating sweat from the skin for multiplex electrochemical analysis of biomarker profiles. The smart wettable membrane provides an affordable solution to address the sampling challenges of in situ perspiration analysis.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors are promising for non-invasive and real-time health monitoring but still confront notable challenges, such as the inaccuracy caused by sweat accumulation/evaporation in sensing area and the wear discomfort due to accumulated sweat and lack of breathability. In this work, we present an all-fabric-based sweat sensing platform based on a novel design of directional sweat transport window for continuous transfer and monitoring of sweat. The directional sweat transport window is built based on hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus wettability on fabric's two sides, integrated in a highly hydrophobic cotton fabric, and sandwiched between hydrophilic cotton layers. Through the window, sweat collected by inner cotton layer from area in and around the window can be directionally and spontaneously transferred from hydrophobic side to hydrophilic side, even when the hydrophobic side faces downward, i.e., irrespective of gravity. The outer cotton layer serves to draw sweat away from hydrophilic side of directional sweat transport window through continuous evaporation, and thus also as reservoir for sweat residue. Fiber-shaped sensing electrodes were fixed on the hydrophobic side of directional sweat transport window. The directional sweat transport function reduces the time that the sweat remains in the sensing area, thus effectively avoiding the sweat accumulation and enhancing the sensing stability and accuracy, as well as the wear comfort. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated on-body, wireless monitoring of the sweat of a volunteer in physical exercise. Such a directional sweat transport window strategy also shows potential as a platform technology for other wearable applications.

Abstract:Stretchable sweat sensors are promising technology that can acquire biomolecular insights for health and fitness monitoring by intimate integration with the body. However, current sensors often require microfabricated microfluidic channels to control sweat flow during lab-on-body analysis, which makes effective and affordable sweat sampling a significant practical challenge. Here, we present stretchable and sweat-wicking patches that utilize bioinspired smart wettable membranes for the on-demand manipulation of sweat flow. In a scalable process, the membrane is created by stacking hydrophobic elastomer nanofibers onto soft microfoams with predefined two-dimensional superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic patterns. The engineered heterogeneous wettability distribution allows these porous membranes to achieve enhanced extraction and selective collection of sweat in embedded assays. Despite the simplified architecture, the color reactions between sweat and chemical indicators are inhibited from directly contacting the skin to achieve a largely improved operation safety. The sensing patches can simultaneously quantify pH, urea, and calcium in sweat through digital colorimetric analysis with smartphone images. The construction with all compliant materials renders these patches soft and stretchy to achieve conformal attachment to the skin. Successfully analyzing sweat compositions after physical exercises illustrates the practical suitability of these skin-attachable sensors for health tracking and point-of-care diagnosis.

Abstract:A hydrophilic/hydrophobic Janus fabric (HHJF) consists of PTFE braided layers and Tencel braided layers is developed for personal sweat monitoring and moisture management under moderate/profuse perspiration scenarios. The optimized HHJF shows superior directed water delivery from the hydrophobic layer to the hydrophilic layer, and also enabling real‐time detection of sweat volume of up to 2000 mL m−2 and exhibiting excellent durability over 500 cycle tests. Quantifiable monitoring and management of sweat volume have attracted considerable attention because of their role in assessing physiological health and preventing dehydration. However, defective sweat monitoring and poor moisture management limit the performance of most smart textiles under moderate/profuse perspiration scenarios. In this study, a large‐scale fabrication technology is used, including braiding and weaving, to prepare a hydrophilic/hydrophobic Janus fabric (HHJF) with good directional water delivery and sweat‐volume monitoring capabilities. The HHJF consists of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) braided yarns (lower layer) and Tencel braided yarns (upper layer), which comprise a conductive yarn as the core and PTFE/Tencel yarns as the sheath with enhanced water absorption capacity. The unique functional structure design achieves the enhanced unidirectional water transport and high sweat‐sensing response for the HHJF under perspiration conditions. The optimized HHJF facilitates spontaneous droplet penetration from the hydrophobic layer to the hydrophilic layer, while enabling the real‐time detection of sweat volume of up to 2000 mL m−2 with excellent durability for over 1000 cycle tests. Thus, the exceptional perspiration management and monitoring capabilities of HHJF are expected to promote the development of practical smart textiles that enable real‐time monitoring of perspiration dynamics.

Abstract:Integrating sweat biosensors into daily wear has the potential to effectively monitor personal lactate levels, offering the advantages of convenience, precision, and multi-point detection. However, existing wearable fabric sweat biosensors have limitations in terms of long-term repeatable detection and washability due to the difficulty of building a stable layer of recognition materials on the highly curved fiber surface. Here, a long-term repeatable and washable electrochemical fabric biosensor is reported based on a fiber electrode with multi-scaled aligned channels for efficient and reliable lactate detection. Through the functionalization of a molecularly imprinted polymer with redox-sensitive nano reporters, the fabric biosensor exhibits impressive in situ long-term repeatable detection for more than 400 times, washability, and stability under deformations. The multi-scaled channels contribute to a desired electric field distribution and thus a reliable interface between the polymer and the fiber. Employing industrial sewing technology, a 20 m (L) x 0.5 m (W) sensing fabric is further produced. Ultimately, combined with a wireless communication element, the fabric biosensing system can immediately track lactate levels. Abstract:Skin-interfaced microfluidic patch has become a reliable device for sweat collection and analysis. However, the intractable problems of emptying the microchannel for reuse, and the channel's volumetric capacity limited by the size of the patch, directly hinder the practical application of sweat sensors. Herein, we report an adaptively resettable microfluidic sweat patch (Art-Sweat patch) capable of continuously monitoring both sweat rate (0.2-4.0 μL min-1) and total ionic charge concentration (10-200 mmol L-1). We develop a platform with a vertical and horizontal microchannel combined strategy, enabling repeatedly filling sweat and emptying the microchannel for autonomously resetting and detecting. The variation in the emptied volume is designed to be adaptively identified by the sensor, resulting in enhanced stability and an enlarged volumetric capacity of over 300 μL. By integrating with self-designed wireless transmission modules, the proposed Art-Sweat patch shows product-level wearability and high performance in monitoring variations in regional sweat rate and concentration for hydration status assessment.

Abstract:The current physical health care system has gradually evolved into a form of virtual hospitals communicating with sensors, which can not only save time but can also diagnose a patient's physical condition in real time. Textile-based wearable sensors have recently been identified as detection platforms with high potential. They are developed for the real-time noninvasive detection of human physiological information to comprehensively analyze the health status of the human body. Sweat comprises various chemical compositions, which can be used as biomarkers to reflect the relevant information of the human physiology, thus providing references for health conditions. Combined together, textile-based sweat sensors are more flexible and comfortable than other conventional sensors, making them easily integrated into the wearable field. In this short review, the research progress of textile-based flexible sweat sensors was reviewed. Three mechanisms commonly used for textile-based sweat sensors were firstly contrasted with an introduction to their materials and preparation processes. The components of textile-based sweat sensors, which mainly consist of a sweat transportation channel and collector, a signal-selection unit, sensing elements and sensor integration and communication technologies, were reviewed. The applications of textile-based sweat sensors with different mechanisms were also presented. Finally, the existing problems and challenges of sweat sensors were summarized, which may contribute to promote their further development.

Abstract:Flexible wearable microfluidic devices show great feasibility and potential development in the collection and analysis of sweat due to their convenience and non-invasive characteristics in health-level feedback and disease prediction. However, the traditional production process of microfluidic patches relies on resource-intensive laboratory and high-cost facilities. In this paper, a low-cost laser-cutting technology is proposed to fabricate epidermal microfluidic patches for the collection, storage and colorimetric analysis of sweat. Two different types of capillary bursting valves are designed and integrated into microchannel layers to produce two-stage bursting pressure for the reliable routing of sweat into microreservoirs in sequential fashion, avoiding the mixing of old and new sweat. Additionally, an enzyme-based reagent is embedded into the microreservoirs to quantify the glucose level in sweat by using colorimetric methods, demonstrating a high detection sensitivity at the glucose concentration from 0.1 mM to 1 mM in sweat and an excellent anti-interference performance that prevents interference from substances probably existent in sweat. In vitro and on-body experiments demonstrate the validity of the low-cost, laser-cut epidermal microfluidic patch for the chronological analysis of sweat glucose concentration and its potential application in the monitoring of human physiological information.

Abstract:Highly conductive and strong tetra‐aniline (TANi)‐based hybrid fiber has been fabricated by wetspinning dope viscoelasticity optimization via regulating the electrostatic intercalation between TANi aggregates. The thus‐prepared TANi‐based hybrid fibers are integrated into a fabric patch, with demonstrating synchronous electrochemical charge storage and continuous physiological biomarker sensing. Continuous monitoring of human sweat, which enables highly sensitive multiple biomarkers analysis with a portable power supply, is increasingly desired for the remote healthcare industry. Smart fibers with on‐demand functionality are ideal candidates for fabricating noninvasive and conformal bioelectronic devices owing to their considerable flexibility. Herein, a multifunctional textile patch based on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/tetra‐aniline (TANi) fiber for simultaneous biomarker monitoring and energy supply is reported. Benefiting from the multi‐electrochemical redox states and proton doping/dedoping characteristics of TANi, rGO/TANi hybrid fibers are combined into an energy storage device and biosensor in a physiological environment. GO flakes increase the viscoelasticity of the wet‐spinning dope by regulating the noncovalent interactions between TANi aggregates, thereby enhancing the mechanical strength and conductivity of the resulting rGO/TANi hybrid fiber. Consequently, the hybrid fiber exhibits high volumetric capacitance and versatile sensing capability for various physiological analytes, e.g., pH, K+, and glucose in sweat electrolyte. Furthermore, a wireless continuous sweat monitoring system is constructed by integrating the multifunctional fiber sensor into a printed electric circuit board with programmed functionality. Such a delicate integrated design that harnesses the signal collection and communication units is anticipated to facilitate practical applications in personalized diagnostic and physiological health.

Abstract:Abstract In situ analysis of sweat biomarkers potentially provides noninvasive lifestyle monitoring and early diagnosis. Quantitative detection of sweat rate is crucial for thermoregulation and preventing heat injuries. Here, a skin‐attachable paper fluidic patch is reported for in situ colorimetric sensing of multiple sweat markers (pH, glucose, lactate, and uric acid) with concurrent sweat rate tracking. Two sets of fluidic patterns—multiplexed detection zones and a longitudinal sweat rate channel—are directly printed by an automated ink dispenser from a specially developed ceramic‐based ink. The ceramic ink thermal‐cures into an impervious barrier, confining sweat within the channels. The ceramic‐ink‐printed boundary achieves higher pattern resolution, prevents fluid leakage, attains pattern thermal stability, and resistant to organic solvents. The cellulose matrix of the detection zones is modified with nanoparticles to improve the color homogeneity and sweat sensor sensitivity. The sweat rate channel is made moisture sensitive by incorporating a metal‐salt‐based dye. The change in saturation/color of the detection zones and/or channels upon sweat addition can be visually detected or quantified by a smartphone camera. A cost‐effective way is provided to fabricate paper fluidic sensor patches, successfully demonstrating on‐body multiplexed evaluation of sweat analytes. Such skin wearables offer on‐site analysis, meaningful to an increasingly health‐conscious population.

Abstract:The mass production of multifunctional integrated fiber electrodes is the foundation for achieving largescale wearable applications of fiber or fabric-based electronic devices. Based on the flexible, functional and molecular structure adjustable characteristics of polymer semiconductor materials, a method for segmental in situ synthesis of polyaniline functional layers on long fiber surfaces has been put forward in this work. And then, coated with conductive carbon materials, this allows for the successful continuous preparation of segmental multifunctional integrated fiber electrodes. By modifying the fiber substrate with oxidative treatment, the affinity of the fiber substrate to the aniline substrate can be enhanced, which overcomes the problem of polymer functional layer boundary diffusion caused by capillary wetting or detachment. On this basis, according to a kind of novel textile-based circuit design, a textile-structured integrated circuit module has been developed, which can simultaneously realize continuous monitoring of human sweat pH value, health status judgment, and early warning. Co-woven with the fiber-structured Zn/MnO2 batteries, as well as integrated with mini wireless chips, light-emitting diodes, etc., this integrated circuit textile enables consecutive human body wireless monitoring and timely emergency warning for abnormal situations, demonstrating its potential application in future wearable AI hardware.
