Abstract:The use of spatial three-dimensional modeling of the main elements of a gunshot injury plays a significant part in the modern forensic medical examination. It allows not only to improve the visualization of such bodily injuries, to increase the objectivity and validity of expert conclusions, to accumulate an evidence basis for war crimes committed with the use of various types of firearms, but it also helps to discover new morphological features which couldn’t be detected when using traditional research methods. The work shows the process of detecting a new morphological feature during three-dimensional modeling of the wound channel caused by the IJ 70-01 pistol loaded with 9 mm cartridges. Aim of the work. Demonstration of new possibilities of three-dimensional spatial modeling in the process of the forensic investigation of a gunshot wound. Materials and methods. To achieve the aim of study, a series of experimental shots were fired from the IJ 70-01 automatic pistol loaded with 9 mm cartridges. To conduct bench ballistic tests according to the US standards – NIJ (National Institute of Justice), HOSDB (Home Office Scientific Development Branch) – standardized ballistic clay Roma Plastilina No.1 was used as the main material that absorbs the energy of the bullet and reproduces all the elements of wound ballistics. It was coated in pig skin with subcutaneous adipose tissue in order to recreate more true-to-life conditions of the gunshot injury. The generated wound channel was filled with Tropicalgin alginate impression material (Zhermack, Italy), which was mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions; it has short setting time and reproduces the smallest details of the wound channel. Thereafter, the formed cast of the wound channel was subjected to a series of photographs at the appropriate angles and its 3D model was created with the help of the graphic design software “Agisoft PhotoScan” and “3ds max”. Results. The result of the conducted studies was obtaining a spatial three-dimensional model of the gunshot wound channel, which brings about new opportunities for its research. The implementation of three-dimensional modeling techniques made it possible to discover a new morphological feature – a helical torsion of the wound channel, the direction of which can indicate specific design features of the firearm used. Conclusions. The implementation of three-dimensional spatial modeling in the process of a gunshot trauma investigation sets conditions for increasing visibility and objectivity during conduction of such forensic medical examinations. At the same time, new opportunities are brought about for taking linear dimensions of the existing morphological features of the wound channel main elements with extended precision, the accumulation of demonstrative evidence basis in cases of such injuries, and the discovery of new morphological features for identification of the specific design features of the firearm used.
Investigation of the circumstances of the shooting using three-dimensional photogrammetry

Abstract:Introduction. A promising direction in forensic practice is the use of three-dimensional modeling of objects to establish the circumstances relevant to the criminal case. Theoretical analysis. Photographs taken during the investigation could be used as a source of information to derive a three-dimensional model. Photogrammetry is a method that allows for the automated construction of three-dimensional models from images. The main data in three-dimensional photogrammetry should be the elements of external and internal orientation, coordinates in the photograph, and spatial coordinates. Еmpirical analysis. To build a three-dimensional model, photos from the crime scene submitted for forensic firearm examination were used to determine whether the situation described by the accused, suspect, corresponded to the objective mechanism of the accident. The main stages of model building in 3D photogrammetry software Agisoft Metashape were reflected. Based on the procedural documents submitted for examination, the three-dimensional model reflected the alleged location of the shooter and the victim, and the direction of the shots from the defendant’s words, as well as the likely direction of the shots in accordance with the wound channels and the situation. Discussion of results. There are essential advantages of three-dimensional photogrammetry: it does not require expensive and complex equipment, operates with photographs obtained during the investigation, constructs the whole area of an object in the frame, and allows for synthesizing data from various sources. However, the quality of the resulting models depends on the number of photographs and compliance with the rules of measurement and panning of objects. It is also important that the researcher skilled in the use of software tools to build three-dimensional models from photographic images is able to make adjustments at each stage. Conclutions. The possibility of producing a three-dimensional reconstruction of the crime and solving problems not only within forensic firearm examination, but also those kinds, with which it can be combined, is reflected.
Three-dimensional visualization of gunshot cavities in ballistic gelatine with computed tomography - A forensic ballistics case study

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) imaging, primarily computed tomography (CT), has proven valuable in the documentation and analysis of gunshot injuries. Explicit visualization of findings may play a pivotal role in judicial settings. This forensic ballistics case study aimed to examine the potential of CT-based 3D reconstruction to digitally visualize gunshot cavities in ballistic gelatine. Three .30 caliber bullets of different types (full metal jacket, soft point, and expanding monolithic) were fired into standardized blocks of 10% ballistic gelatine. The blocks underwent CT scanning with clinical equipment. Gelatine and air were segmented from the CT data using an open-source software. 3D reconstruction views of the segmented gelatine and air components were created. The gunshot cavities were clearly observed in both gelatine and air segmentation. The differences in cavitation between bullet types were evident in both reconstruction approaches, although gelatine segmentation produced higher resolution of small details. The obvious benefit of digital reconstruction was the ability to freely tilt and rotate the 3D images, with the possibility of taking measurements manually or automatically from any plane. Moreover, all the data can be stored for future analysis. This study introduces a preliminary method for digital visualization and documentation of gunshot cavitation in ballistic gelatine, to be fine-tuned and implemented for research purposes and routine practice in forensic institutions.
The utilization of tachymetry in forensic medicine

Abstract:Introduction: Tachymetry is a geodetic method enabling to measure angles and distances. The aim of the work was to demonstrate alternatives of its utilization in daily forensic medicine practice. The work is dealing with confusing cases of gunshot injuries. It is impossible to determine the trajectory of the projectile, the sequence of gunshots, to identify shooting person etc. in these cases only on the base of autopsy findings and investigated circumstances. In these cases the investigation experiments on the crime scene in collaboration with the land surveyors were realized. The work presents two case reports. Methods: For our measurements the electronic tachymeter TOPCON 211D was used. These were performed by the means of polar method in local coordinate system with relative heights. In the first case the position of victim was simulated by a figurant according to testimonies of witnesses and the accused. The second case dealed with suicide. Results: In the first case there were two gunshots. The trajectory of the first gunshot was determined and the projectile was found. Hereby the most authentic testimony could be estimated. Also high grade probability of the relative position of the victim and the accused was figured out. In the case of suicide also the projectile was found and the position of the victim in the time of gunshot was determined. Conclusion: In the both case reports demonstrated the projectiles were not found by ballistics expert investigations. All questions of expert opinions could be answered only with the help of tachymetry. The advantage of this method is its good regional availability even at places far from specialized criminal investigation workplaces.

Abstract:This article discusses a number of issues related to the measurement of hospital diagnostic case mix. We initially examine a number of previous attempts to measure case mix based on surrogate measures (e.g., facilities and services) and information from predetermined discharge-classification systems. Since a number of researchers have attempted to reduce diagnostic classification data into a single-valued (i.e., scalar) case mix index, we then discuss a number of concepts and assumptions implicit in the construction of such indices. Among these assumptions is the property of functional homogeneity; this property and a methodology based on Q-type factor analysis for testing for the presence of this property are defined. In order to illustrate the use of the methodology, it is applied to data from 153 hospitals in downstate New York.
The quantified evaluation of the wounding potential of a ricochet projectile of a handgun cartridge calibre 9 mm (type 82) in a ballistic experiment

Abstract:The question of handgun use in a city or densely populated aglomerations requires a highly practical level of solution to this issue, though with the knowledge of theoretical presumptions of wound ballistics of ricochet projectiles. The application of wound ballistics into the practice of a forensic pathologist, as well as a surgeon or a traumatologist, enables a good understanding of the dynamics of projectile penetration through anatomic structures of the human body. In forensic assessment, gunshot wounds of limbs are relatively frequent cases. By the integration of wound ballistics principles into the research of gunshot wounds, it is also possible to establish, whether the projectile entered into the anatomic structures under direct trajectory steadily or whether through the course of its trajectory, before reaching the human body, it firstly contacted a particular object in the space, i. e. whether the injury could have been caused by a ricochet projectile. In connection with unclear gunshot wounds and their morphological image, it is necessary to consider the possibility of the effects of a ricochet projectile, especially when persons are injured accidentally. The daily practice of the officers of the Police Corps of the Slovak Republic essentially enhances the necessity of being informed about the behaviour of parametrically designated ricochet projectiles in a ballistic experiment with the use of a model of a built-up area in a town, with typical materials and surfaces of objects in between and a model of a human limb part as a potential target of an uncontrolled ricochet projectile. The proposed design of the situation is undoubtedly of an enormous significance, even when forensically evaluating the morphological consequences of ricochet projectiles. By the application of results of such experiments and their final comparison, when different types of projectiles are used, it is also possible to contribute to the experts groundwork in the process of rearmament of the official armed forces. The main aim of our work is to point out the high potential of the wounding effect of ricochet bullets of a particular calibre cartridge with focus on injuries of the femurs of the lower limbs. The carried out ballistic experiment was designed for the needs of the experimental part of a diploma thesis of a student from the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava and his results point out at the possibilities for civilian safety strategies during the intervention of the armed forces as well. Investigation of Dental Alginate and Agar Impression Materials As a Brain Simulant for Ballistic Testing.

Abstract:Routine forensic research into in vitro skin/skull/brain ballistic blood backspatter behavior has traditionally used gelatin at a 1:10 Water:Powder (W:P) ratio by volume as a brain simulant. A limitation of gelatin is its high elasticity compared to brain tissue. Therefore this study investigated the use of dental alginate and agar impression materials as a brain simulant for ballistic testing. Fresh deer brain, alginate (W:P ratio 91.5:8.5) and agar (W:P ratio 81:19) specimens (n=10) (11×22×33mm) were placed in transparent Perspex boxes of the same internal dimensions prior to shooting with a 0.22inch caliber high velocity air gun. Quantitative analysis to establish kinetic energy loss, vertical displacement elastic behavior and qualitative analysis to establish elasticity behavior was done via high-speed camera footage (SA5, Photron, Japan) using Photron Fastcam Viewer software (Version 3.5.1, Photron, Japan) and visual observation. Damage mechanisms and behavior were qualitatively established by observation of the materials during and after shooting. The qualitative analysis found that of the two simulant materials tested, agar behaved more like brain in terms of damage and showed similar mechanical response to brain during the passage of the projectile, in terms of energy absorption and vertical velocity displacement. In conclusion agar showed a mechanical and subsequent damage response that was similar to brain compared to alginate.
Enhancing forensic investigation through the use of modern three-dimensional (3D) imaging technologies for crime scene reconstruction

Abstract:Recent advances in the capabilities and accessibility of powerful 3D imaging technologies have seen an increasingly widespread adoption of these systems as a tool for the investigation of serious crime. The need for precise and accurate mapping of crime scenes has led to the adaptation of laser scanning technology from the mining and surveying industries for use in a forensic context. Entire crime scenes are now able to be captured and reconstructed with millimetre detail, and revolutionary new systems are allowing these datasets to be explored by investigators and jurors without complex equipment or expertise. Numerous useful analyses, such as determining bullet trajectories, mapping bloodstain evidence and comparing complex weapons with impressions, are now able to be conducted within this 3D space, revealing new information through the reconstruction of complex crime scenes that may not have been possible through conventional methods. As a relatively recent forensic field, there are several considerations for organizations implementing 3D imaging systems for crime scene reconstruction, to ensure the validity of this material and subsequent acceptance in court. Best practice guidelines and oversight organizations are being developed across international jurisdictions to help guide and facilitate the growth of 3D reconstruction as a forensic tool.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of analysing visual material in a 3D environment when examining spatial interrelations between the incident participants, tools, and space surrounding the incident site. Such analysis may provide information about the trauma mechanism, which may lead to the determination of probable events. This paper points to the potential of conducting research under 3D environment conditions on the example of a specific criminal incident-a suspected homicide. The aim of the study was to identify possible circumstances of the events with particular emphasis on the mechanism of death and the involvement of third parties. It was performed a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of the elements of the incident using different sources and forms of evidence, and consequently also different imaging, analysis, and synthesis technologies. The resulting 3D reconstruction and animation of the possible events serve to verify the investigative hypotheses. The paper combines a technical description of the research methodology with a forensic commentary, which ultimately creates an integral synthesis of the medicolegal assessment for trial purposes, while presenting the effectiveness of the research methods used. To sum up, the paper presents an experiment carried out under virtual conditions, impossible to execute under real conditions but critical for trial case analysis.

Abstract:Abstract The present study investigated the main morphological differences between the permanent cavities formed by 4 different types of projectiles fired from .38 SPL caliber cartridges in blocks of 10% ballistic gelatin with standardized formulation (Federal Bureau of Investigation Protocol), all fired from the same distance and from the same firearm, associated with its performances in external and terminal ballistics. The velocity or the mass presented by a firearm projectile will not always be solely responsible for the final configuration of the permanent cavity, in which the projectile design, for example, is an equally important element. Each type of projectile tested in the present work generated a different kind of permanent cavity, but they also varied in velocity (m/s) and energy (J). The use of 10% ballistic gelatin in scientific research that seeks to investigate the external and terminal ballistics of projectiles can contribute to the practice of professionals working either in forensic pathology or applied ballistics scenarios, as they can experimentally simulate the events that can occur in the tissues of victims inflicted by gunshot wounds, which also allows important applications in the medical, commercial, civil, and military sectors that deal with products and technologies related to the human body.

Single-transistor option for high-resolution /spl gamma/-ray spectroscopy in hostile environments

Abstract:We designed and realized a low-noise charge preamplifier for HPGe (high purity germanium) /spl gamma/-ray detectors, able to operate at a distance of 3 to 6 m from the detector. One transistor only is placed in close proximity to the detector. Such a setup is required in applications where the detector works in hostile environments that could damage or destroy the electronic circuitry. Using 3 m RG62 cables and a 23 pF detector capacitance we obtained a noise of /spl sim/1.07 keV fwhm at 2 /spl mu/s shaping time, so fully compatible with /spl gamma/-spectroscopy requirements. By compensating the preamplifier so as to completely eliminate the ringings in its response function we obtained a rise-time of /spl sim/46 ns with 3 m cables and of /spl sim/80 ns with 5 m cables. With a different approach, or using a lower compensation capacitance and eliminating the ringings through a numerical post filter, we obtained a faster rise time of /spl sim/33 ns, with a detector-preamplifier distance of 5 m, while maintaining the low-noise performance. This latter setup is adequate for spectroscopy and tracking of /spl gamma/-rays with segmented HPGe detectors.
The finite element method-based pattern recognition approach for the classification of patient-specific gunshot injury

Abstract:Violence related injuries and deaths mostly caused by firearms are a major problem throughout the world. Understanding the factors that control the extent of hard-soft tissue wound patterns using computer imaging techniques, numerical methods, and machine learning algorithms may help physicians to diagnose and treat those injuries more properly. Here, we investigate the use of computational results coupled with the pattern recognition algorithms to develop an approach for forensic applications. Initially, computer tomography (CT) images of the patient whose leg was shot by a 9 × 19 parabellum bullet are used to construct the FE models of that patient’s femoral bone and the surrounding soft tissues. Then, Hounsfield units-based material properties are assigned to elements of the bone. To simulate the full range of loading conditions encountered in ballistic events, a constitutive model that captures the strain-rate dependent response is implemented. The entrance pathway vector of the bullet is directed in accordance with the patient’s wound and the simulations are deployed for the cases having various inlet velocities such as 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 m/s. Once the FE results for each case are obtained, they are processed with supervised machine learning algorithms to classify the wound and inlet velocity correspondence. The results demonstrate that they can be diagnosed with a percent accuracy of 97.3, 97.5, and 98.3 for the decision tree (DT), k-nearest neighbors (kNN) and support vector machine (SVM) classifier, respectively. This approach may provide a useful framework in classifying the wound type, predicting the bullet impact velocity and its firing distance.
Virtual anthropology? Reliability of three-dimensional photogrammetry as a forensic anthropology measurement and documentation technique

Abstract:Osseous remains provide forensic anthropologists with morphological and osteometric information that can be used in building a biological profile. By conducting a visual and physical examination, an anthropologist can infer information such as the sex and age of the deceased. Traditionally, morphological and osteometric information is gathered by physically handling remains for analysis. With the advancement of digital technology, there has been a shift from direct to indirect methods of analysis by utilizing models generated from three-dimensional (3D) imaging, which includes computed tomography (CT) scanning and 3D photogrammetry. Although CT scanning is more common, photogrammetry has found application in a range of fields such as architecture, geography and road accident reconstruction. The application of modern-day photogrammetry for forensic anthropology purposes, however, has not been discussed extensively. The aim of this research was to validate the accuracy of 3D models generated by photogrammetry by comparing them to both 3D models generated by CT scanning and the actual physical models. In this study, six 3D models were created using photogrammetry (n = 3) and CT scanning (n = 3). The 3D models were generated from three different Bone Clone® human skulls. A mobile phone camera was used to capture images, which were then processed in Agisoft Metashape®. Intrarater, interrater, and intermethod reliability tests gave correlation coefficients of at least 0.9980, 0.9871, and 0.9862, respectively; rTEM results ranged from 0.250 to 6.55%; and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) yielded P values under 0.05 for all measurements except one. Statistical tests therefore showed photogrammetry to be a reliable and accurate alternative to more expensive CT scanning approaches.
Mathematical modeling of foreign bodies with different density in biological and non-biological models in the experiment

Abstract:Background. Modeling allows investigating both existing and predicted processes and is widely used in basic science and in many industries. The aim is to develop a mathematical model for determining the size of the foreign bodies (FB) and their radiographic density in non-biological and biological models to improve the results of diagnosis for gunshot ricochet wounds. Materials and methods. In the biological non-living model (a piece of pork) and non-biological models (polystyrene, foam rubber), we place the FB made of paper, leather, rubber, plastic, and lithium-ion batteries. The number of the FB is 9 of each type. Number of models is 3 each: pork, polystyrene, foam rubber. We measure the dimensions of the FB and models with a metric ruler. For each model, we select the FB, which we label with the study number. We immerse the FB to the same depth using a Billroth general surgical medium hemostatic clamp in the following sequence: paper, leather, rubber, plastic, and lithium-ion battery. Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) of the models is performed on the Revolution EVO (2021) apparatus with measurement of the sizes and radiographic density of the FB and models. Radiographic density was measured in conventional units on the Hounsfield scale. For each study group, the ratio of the actual sizes of the removed FB and according to MSCT data was determined in the MathCad 15 computer math software, depending on the radiological density of the FB and the model. Results. According to MSCT data, the radiographic density of the models on the Hounsfield scale is as follows: polystyrene — –990.0 ± 0.3 units; foam rubber — –985.0 ± 0.2 units; pork — 62.0 ± 0.3 units; radiographic density of the foreign bodies: paper — –743.0 ± 10.3 units, leather — –258.0 ± 14.2 units, rubber — –12.0 ± 2.6 units, plastic — 183.0 ± 14.6 units, lithium-ion batteries — 3071 units. Visualization of paper in non-biological and biological models and leather in non-biological models is problematic due to the similar radiographic density of the models and the inability to measure the dimensions. When the FB (rubber, plastic, battery) is immersed in polystyrene, the coefficient of length (CL) is 1.0612, the coefficient of width (CW) is 1.928; in foam rubber: CL is 0.9926, CW is 1.9641; in pork: CL is 0.8394, CW is 1.534. Comparing the average coefficients of the ratio (CL and CW), we find that the coefficient in a biological model is closest to 1. This means that the FB from rubber, plastic, and batteries are best detected in pork. Conclusions. The actual dimensions of the FB placed in biological and non-biological models differ from those obtained by MSCT. Data correction is performed through calculated coefficients for length and width. The radiographic density of the model affects the radial visualization of the FB. The use of mathematical modeling in determining the sizes and radiographic density allows reducing the measurement error and determine the structure of the FB.
Experimental and numerical study on failure mechanisms of bone simulants subjected to projectile impact

Abstract:Analyses of the human bones failure mechanisms under projectile impact conditions can be made through performing of a large number of ballistic trials. But the amount of data that can be collected during ballistic experiments is limited due to the high dynamics of the process and its destructive character. Numerical analyses may support experimental methodologies allowing to better understand the principles of the phenomenon. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to create and to verify a numerical model of commercially available synthetic bone material-Synbone®. The model could be used in the future as a supporting tool facilitating forensic studies or designing processes of personal protection systems (helmets, bulletproof vests, etc.). Although Synbone® is commonly used in the ballistic experiments, the literature lacks reliable numerical models of this material. In order to define a numerical model of Synbone®, mechanical experiments characterizing the response of the material to the applied loads in a wide range of strains and strain rates were carried out. Based on the mechanical tests results, an appropriate material model was selected for the Synbone® composite and the values of constants in its equations were determined. Material characterization experiments were subsequently reproduced with numerical simulations and a high correlation of the results was obtained. The final validation of the material model was based on the comparison of the ballistic impact experiments and simulation results. High similarity obtained (relative error lower than 10%) demonstrates that the numerical model of Synbone® material was properly defined.

Abstract:Background: Although gunshot wounds are less common in Germany than in other countries, a proportion of suicides and violent crimes are committed with firearms, which is why basic knowledge of diagnosis is important. Objective: Fundamentals regarding forensic assessment of gunshot wounds are discussed alongside typical radiological findings. Materials and methods: In addition to analyzing our own cases and evaluating official statistics, this article is based on a discussion of basic research and expert recommendations. Results: The article describes the characteristics of the bullet entry and exit as well as special features of the bullet trajectory, particularly in bony injuries, and discusses their significance for radiological findings. Pitfalls in interpretation, such as changes in body position and the deflection of projectile (fragments) in the body, are presented, as are the advantages of supplementary radiological diagnostics (projectile search before initiation of dissection, simple detection of an air embolism, clarity of bullet trajectory reconstruction). Conclusion: This article is intended to provide an overview of not only typical types of weapons and projectiles but also their effects on the body of the victim, which must be documented by the examiner.

Abstract:Introduction: The scientific community highlighted the relevance of 3D physical models since the beginning of the XXI century, complementary to three-dimensional(3D) digital volume by computer tomography, to support court discussions on medico-legal issues. The recreation of 3D evidence can be an important tool for investigators and experts, providing a better understanding of the causes and circumstances of the events involved in a crime. Objective: The present study aims to assess the reproducibility of 3D printed and 3D tomographic volumes generated from mandibles following simulated forensic injuries, highlighting the recreation of crime tools. Material and methods: Concerning the study design presented, data collection was performed in three phases. Nine simulated injuries of forensic interest were selected (phase1) and all the mandibles were scanned tomographically, individually, by Cone Beam Computed Tomography CBCT (phase 2). Then, in phase 3, the DICOM images were used for 3D printing with the Ender 3® printer by the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique. The data analysis followed two procedures: the comparison between the artificial mandible and 3D tomographic volume (AT) and the comparison between the artificial mandible and 3D printed volume, or the copy (AC). Data were analyzed using T-Student and ICC tests and presented in Bland-Altman plots. Conclusion: The analogic technique applied in 3D printed volume, when compared with computerized technique, using 3D digital images and measurement, showed to be accurate and reproducible. Further studies are needed in search of standardization for three-dimensional measurements in digitized and printed volumes.

Abstract:Abstract In forensic medicine the use of so-called 3D printing is a niche application, whereas developments elsewhere in this field are rapidly advancing worldwide. The most common and widespread technology is fusion deposit modelling with polylactic acids (PLA). Although the equipment and materials may be relatively inexpensive and 3D printing relatively fast, the resulting end products tend to also have negative properties, such as poor durability and mechanical anisotropy, which may be an issue depending on the application. In forensic medicine, applications in the field of weapons technology and biomechanical models are realistic and 3D printing is already being used for demonstrations at court hearings and in teaching and also as a technique for building spare parts or accessories. Having a low-cost option for rapid prototyping on-site is particularly useful for the development phase. For finished 3D designs more expensive manufacturing options with a choice of materials with significantly broader mechanical or thermal properties are available. As the technology is undergoing major changes, one should carefully consider whether to enter the field oneself, buy own hardware, use a 3D printing service or seek cooperation possibly with a nearby partner.

Abstract:Forensic imaging technology has rapidly advanced over the past several decades and is gaining increasing significance in medico-legal death investigations. Medical-grade computed tomography (CT) is now routinely used in post-mortem examinations at numerous institutions across the globe. However, the resolution of medical-grade CT is limited and unsuitable when used to depict some smaller anatomical structures or micro-trauma. High-resolution micro-CT offers up to 100× the resolution to overcome this problem but is a very recent addition to the field of forensic radiology. Few studies so far have attempted to validate the results which is an essential prerequisite for it to be used in the criminal justice process as demanded by regulatory bodies. This study directly compares micro-CT images with histology, the current gold standard. Three cases were examined: two larynges from suspected strangulations and one ribcage of a case of fatal child abuse. A strong correlation was observed between histology and micro-CT as the majority of skeletal injuries were identified correctly. This paper discusses the forensic implications of the results and how micro-CT is complementary to histology.
