Abstract:Upconversion (UC)/downconversion (DC)-luminescent lanthanide-doped nanocrystals (LDNCs) with near-infrared (NIR, 650-1700 nm) excitation have been gaining increasing popularity in bioimaging. However, conventional NIR-excited LDNCs cannot be degraded and eliminated eventually in vivo owing to intrinsic "rigid" lattices, thus constraining clinical applications. A biodegradability-tunable heterogeneous core-shell-shell luminescent LDNC of Na3HfF7:Yb,Er@Na3ZrF7:Yb,Er@CaF2:Yb,Zr (abbreviated as HZC) was developed and modified with oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) for multimode bioimaging. The dynamic "soft" lattice-Na3Hf(Zr)F7 host and the varying Zr4+ doping content in the outmoster CaF2 shell endowed HZC with tunable degradability. Through elaborated core-shell-shell coating, Yb3+/Er3+-coupled UC red and green and DC second near-infrared (NIR-II) emissions were, respectively, enhanced by 31.23-, 150.60-, and 19.42-fold when compared with core nanocrystals. HZC generated computed tomography (CT) imaging contrast effects, thus enabling NIR-II/CT/UC trimodal imaging. OSA modification not only ensured the exemplary biocompatibility of HZC but also enabled tumor-specific diagnosis. The findings would benefit the clinical imaging translation of LDNCs.

Abstract:As a novel molecular and functional imaging modality, X-ray luminescence computed tomography (XLCT) has shown its potentials in biomedical and preclinic applications. However, there are still some limitations of X-ray-excited luminescent materials, such as low luminescence efficiency, poor biocompatibility, and cytotoxicity, making in vivo XLCT imaging quite challenging. In this study, for the very first time, we present on using sub-10 nm β-NaGdF4:X% Eu3+ nanoparticles with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) surface modification, which demonstrate outstanding luminescence efficiency, uniform size distribution, water dispersity, and biosafety, as the luminescent probes for in vivo XLCT application. The pure hexagonal phase (β-) NaGdF4 has been successfully synthesized and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and then the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), and elemental mapping further confirm Eu3+ ions doped into NaGdF4 host. Under X-ray excitation, the β-NaGdF4 nanoparticles with a doping level of 15% Eu3+ exhibited the most efficient luminescence intensity. Notably, the doping level of Eu3+ has no effect on the crystal phase and morphology of the NaGdF4-based host. Afterward, β-NaGdF4:15% Eu3+ nanoparticles were modified with PAA to enhance the water dispersity and biocompatibility. The compatibility of in vivo XLCT imaging using such nanoparticles was systematically studied via in vitro cytotoxicity, physical phantom, and in vivo imaging experiments. The ultralow cytotoxicity of PAA-modified nanoparticles, which is confirmed by over 80% cell viability of SH-SY5Y cells when treated by high nanoparticle concentration of 200 μg/mL, overcome the major obstacle for in vivo application. In addition, the high luminescence intensity of PAA-modified nanoparticles enables the location error of in vivo XLCT imaging less than 2 mm, which is comparable to that using commercially available bulk material Y2O3:15% Eu3+. The proposed nanoparticles promote XLCT research into an in vivo stage. Further modification of these nanoparticles with biofunctional molecules could enable the potential of targeting XLCT imaging.

Abstract:Lanthanide hybridized carbon quantum dots (Ln-CQDs) were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method using citric acid as a carbon precursor and Yb3+ or Nd3+ as a doping ion. The morphology and chemical structures of Ln-CQDs were investigated by TEM, XRD, XPS, and FTIR spectroscopy. The obtained Ln-CQDs are spherical and well dispersed in water, and their aqueous solutions emit strong blue emission under UV excitation. The Ln-CQDs exhibit excitation-dependent PL behavior with the emission maximum ranging from 443 to 552 nm under 300-520 nm excitation. Moreover, the carbon quantum dots can not only act as visible imaging agents, but also as antennae for photoluminescence (PL) of lanthanide ions. Hence, CQDs hybridized with Yb3+ or Nd3+ ions exhibit the characteristic emission in the near-infrared region with the emission maximum centered at about 998 and 1068 nm, respectively. The MTT assay against HeLa cells verified the low cytotoxicity of Ln-CQDs. They have been used as excellent optical probes for multicolor cell-imaging, demonstrating their great potential for both visible/NIR bioimaging and biomedical applications in vivo.

Abstract:Here, we describe the synthesis of a novel type of rare-earth-doped nanoparticles (NPs) for multimodal imaging, by combining the rare-earth elements Ce, Gd and Nd in a crystalline host lattice consisting of CaF2 (CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd). CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd NPs are small (15-20 nm), of uniform shape and size distribution, and show good biocompatibility and low immunogenicity in vitro. In addition, CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd NPs possess excellent optical properties. CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd NPs produce downconversion emissions in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) under 808 nm excitation, with a strong emission peak at 1056 nm. Excitation in the first near- infrared window (NIR-I, 700-900 nm) has the advantage of deeper tissue penetration power and reduced autofluorescence, compared to visible light. Thus, CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd NPs are ideally suited for in vivo fluorescence imaging. In addition, the presence of Gd3+ makes the NPs intrinsically monitorable by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, next to fluorescence and MR imaging, our results show that CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd NPs can be used as imaging probes for photoacoustic imaging (PAI) in vitro. Therefore, due to their biocompatibility and suitability as multimodal imaging probes, CaF2: Ce, Gd, Nd NPs exhibit great potential as a traceable imaging agent in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Scintillators are essential for high-energy radiation detection in a variety of potential applications. However, due to complex fabrication processes and nanocrystal homogeneity, conventional scintillators are challenging to meet the need for cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and flexible X-ray detection. Here, monodisperse nanocrystals (NCs) with small grain size and colloidal stability are obtained by adjusting the doping concentration of Zn2+ ions and controlling the morphology uniformity of Cs3Cu2I5 NCs. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for the optimal doping concentration is as high as 92.8%, which is a 28.5% improvement compared to nondoped NCs. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Zn2+ dopant inclines to occupy Cu sites and the I-rich condition suppresses the formation of I vacancy, enriching the excited electron density at the band-edge to enhance the self-trapped exciton emission. Moreover, high luminescence performance and flexible X-ray scintillator films are prepared using Zn2+-doped Cs3Cu2I5 NCs, with a spatial resolution of up to 15.7 lp mm(-1). This work provides an effective strategy for the development of environmentally friendly, low-cost, and efficient blue-emitting 0D all-inorganic metal halides, as well as shows their great potential for high-performance flexible lead-free and low-toxicity X-ray detector applications.
Ln(III) Chelates-Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots: Synthesis, Optical Studies and Multimodal Bioimaging Applications.

Abstract:The carbon quantum dots termined with amine groups (CQDs-NH2) were synthesized in one-pot hydrothermal method with citric acid as carbon source and branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) as passive agent, which was then covalently linked to 1, 4, 7, 10-tetraazacyclononane (DOTA) framework to yield CQDs-DOTA. The CQDs-DOTA provide excellent ligand scaffolds for the chelation of lanthanide ions, yielding the related complexes CQDs-DOTA-Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb, Yb and Gd). The successful preparation of CQDs-DOTA-Ln was validated by TEM, XRD, XPS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The CQDs-DOTA-Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb and Yb) exhibited the characteristic emissions of related lanthanide ions, indicating the CQDs could sensitize the luminescence of lanthanide ions. Besides, the CQDs-DOTA-Gd could serve as an excellent T1-weighted MR imaging probe due to the chelation of paramagnetic Gd (III) ions and good hydrophilicity. The cytotoxicity of CQDs-DOTA-Ln was evaluated through MTT assay upon HeLa cells. The images from fluorescence microscopy further verified their applications in bioimaging in vitro. Due to the good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and high contrast efficiency, the CQDs-DOTA-Ln with Vis/NIR fluorescence and MR multi-modal imaging performance could be used as potential contrast agents for clinic applications.
Pr3+ doped NaYF4 and LiYF4 nanocrystals combining visible-to-UVC upconversion and NIR-to-NIR-II downconversion luminescence emissions for biomedical applications

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped fluoride nanocrystals (NCs) are known to exhibit unique optical properties, such as upconversion and downconversion luminescence (UCL and DCL), which can be employed for various applications. In this work, we demonstrate that by doping praseodymium(III) and ytterbium(III) ions (Pr3+ and Yb3+) into a nanosized fluoride matrix (i.e. NaYF4 and LiYF4), it is possible to combine their UCL and DCL properties that can be concurrently used for biomedical applications. In particular, the emissive modes combined in a single nanoparticle co-doped with Pr3+ and Yb3+ include DCL emission (excited at 980 nm and peaked at 1320 nm), which can be used for near infrared (NIR) DCL bioimaging in the NIR-II window of biological tissue transparency (∼1000-1350 nm) and UCL emission (excited at 447 nm and peaked at 275 nm) that can be employed for germicide action (via irradiation by light in the UVC range). A possibility of the latter was demonstrated by the denaturation of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) into single-stranded ones that was caused by the UVC UCL emission from the NCs under 447 nm irradiation; it was evidenced by the hyperchromicity observed in the irradiated dsDNA solution and also by a fluorometric analysis of DNA unwinding (FADU) assay. Concurrently, the possibility of NIR-II luminescence bioimaging through biological tissues (bovine tooth and chicken flesh) was demonstrated. The proposed concept paves a way for NIR-II imaging guided antimicrobial phototherapy using lanthanide-doped fluoride nanocrystals.

Abstract:Since the 18th century, rare-earth ions have been widely used as active dopants in inorganic lattices due to their unique optical properties. Rare-earth doping can control the crystal phase, morphology and size of nanomaterials, resulting in adjustable optical response of doped nanomaterials. The substrate of nanostructures can greatly affect the physical and chemical behavior of rare-earth ions. Therefore, it is also important to find suitable host materials. Among various new host materials, sodium lanthanide fluoride (NaLnF 4 ) nanoparticles are known for their photoluminescence properties and stability. This paper emphasizes the latest progress of NaLnF 4 and its derivatives nanoparticles and their related applications in various biological fields. This review covers the key criteria of NaLnF 4 and its derivatives, including basic electronic structure, lattice environment, doping strategy, surface functionalization and basic design principles for biological applications. At the same time, this paper also discusses the obstacles encountered in the development process and the research directions and challenges of future new applications.

Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) II luminescence between 1000 and 1700 nm has attracted reviving interest for biosensing due to its unique advantages such as deep-tissue penetration and high spatial resolution. Traditional NIR-II probes such as organic fluorophores usually suffer from poor photostability and potential long-term toxicity. Herein, we report the controlled synthesis of monodisperse NaCeF4:Er/Yb nanocrystals (NCs) that exhibit intense NIR-II emission upon excitation at 980 nm. Ce3+ in the host lattice was found to enhance the luminescence of Er3+ at 1530 nm with a maximum NIR-II quantum yield of 32.8%, which is the highest among Er3+-activated nanoprobes. Particularly, by utilizing the intense NIR-II emission of NaCeF4:Er/Yb NCs, we demonstrated their application as sensitive homogeneous bioprobes to detect uric acid with the limit of detection down to 25.6 nM. Furthermore, the probe was detectable in tissues at depths of up to 10 mm, which enabled in vivo imaging of mouse organs and hindlimbs with high resolution, thus revealing the great potential of these NaCeF4:Er/Yb nanoprobes in deep-tissue diagnosis.
Rare-earth Doped Nanoparticles with Narrow NIR-II Emission for Optical Imaging with Reduced Autofluorescence

Abstract:Fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared region(900–1700 nm, NIR-II) with a high resolution and penetration depth due to the significantly reduced tissue scattering and autofluorescence has emerged as a useful tool in biomedical fields. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to the development of fluorophores with an emission band covering the long-wavelength end of NIR-II region(1500–1700 nm) to eliminate the autofluorescence. Alternatively, we believe imaging with a narrow bandwidth could also reduce the autofluorescence. As a proof of concept, NaYF4:Yb, Nd@NaYF4 downconversion nanoparticles(DCNPs) with sharp NIR-II emission were synthesized. The luminescence of DCNPs showed a half-peak width of 49 nm centered at 998 nm, which was perfectly matched with a (1000±25) nm bandpass filter. With this filter, we were able to retain most of the emissions from the nanoparticles, while the autofluorescence was largely reduced. After PEGylation, the DCNPs exhibited great performance for blood vessel and tumor imaging in living mice with significantly reduced autofluorescence and interference signals. This work provided an alternative way for the low-autofluorescence imaging and emphasized the importance of narrow emitting rare-earth doped nanoparticles for NIR-II imaging.

Abstract:Fluorescence imaging plays an important role in early diagnosis and surgical resection of cancer because of its real-time, noninvasiveness, high sensitivity, and resolution. Compared with the traditional visible and first near-infrared (NIR-I) region, fluorescence imaging with NIR-II character has obvious advantages in superior imaging depth and contrast. Because in the NIR region, the auto-fluorescence of biological tissues and the absorption and scattering of photons by tissues will be significantly weakened. Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles (LDNPs) is a promising candidate for NIR fluorescence probe because of its easily adjustable emission wavelength and fluorescence lifetime (FL). In this review, we summarize the general design mechanism of LDNPs from the aspects of preparation method, surface modification and bioconjugation, then introduce the development of LDNPs on bioimaging, biosensing, and multifunctional nano-platform in recent years. The challenges and efforts of LDNPs in this field have further prospected.

Abstract:Nowadays, cancer poses a significant hazard to humans. Limitations in early diagnosis techniques not only result in a waste of healthcare resources but can even lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, consequently reducing cure rates. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an imaging probe that can provide diagnostic information precisely and rapidly. Here, we used a simple hydrothermal method to design a multimodal imaging probe based on the excellent properties of rare-earth ions. Calcium fluoride co-doped with ytterbium, gadolinium, and neodymium (CaF2:Y,Gd,Nd) nanoparticles (NPs) is highly crystalline, homogeneous in morphology, and displays a high biosafety profile. In addition, in vitro and ex vivo experiments explored the multimodal imaging capability of CaF2:Y,Gd,Nd and demonstrated the efficient performance of CaF2:Y,Gd,Nd during NIR-II fluorescence/photoacoustic/magnetic resonance imaging. Collectively, our novel diagnosis nanoparticle will generate new ideas for the development of multifunctional nanoplatforms for disease diagnosis and treatment.
Single Activator Doped Fluoride Nanoparticles for X-ray Excited High-Resolution and Delayed Flexible Nonplanar Imaging

Abstract:Lanthanide doped fluoride nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit adjustable X-ray excited optical/persistent luminescence (XEOL/XEPL) and possessing extensive potential in XEPL-based delay imaging. However, the high-resolution and delayed XEPL-based delay imaging always requires strict introduction of sensitized or heterovalent ions and the construction of complex structures for excellent XEPL performance of lanthanide-doped fluoride NPs, which is attributed to a lack of effective and convenient strategies. Here we show that the intense XEPL strength was obtained by single Tb3+ activated ion doping and simple CsY2F7@NaYF4 core/shell structure for X-ray excited high-resolution and delayed flexible nonplanar imaging. The strict introduction and control of sensitized or heterovalent ions, and the construction of intricate multilayer nanostructure are avoided. In addition, we enable the NPs to achieve high and long-term XEPL performance by simply thermal processing strategy. We successfully mixed minimized amount of the NPs into flexible film to create a scintillation screen which consequently exhibit high surface smoothness, environmental stability, and transparency. Our results demonstrate high resolution delayed imaging of the NPs integrated flexible film for the interior of nonplanar objects. The spatial resolution of 14.3 lp mm- 1 is substantially higher than the typical spatial resolutions required for medical CT scans (2 lp mm-1) and X-ray imaging (3.5 lp mm-1). These findings will promote the development of advanced delayed Xray nonplanar imaging applications.
Nd3+-sensitized Multilayered Rare-Earth Nanocrystals with Enhanced NIR-IIb Luminescence for High Resolution Optical Imaging

Abstract:Luminescence imaging in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window, particularly within the NIR-IIb (1500-1700 nm) sub-window, has been utilized for both fundamental research and clinical applications due to its exceptional spatiotemporal resolution. Nevertheless, efficient contrast agents designed for NIR-IIb imaging are still scarce. Herein, a multilayered rare-earth nanocrystal (NaYF4:Yb,Er,Ce@NaYF4:Yb,Nd@NaYF4) with strong NIR-IIb luminescence was designed and synthesized. The doping of Ce3+ ions in the core effectively suppresses the upconversion and boosts the downconversion luminescence by populating the Er 4I13/2 level. Additionally, by separating the sensitizer (Nd3+) and the activator (Er3+) in different layers, we are able to maximize the light absorption around 800 nm and reduce the cross relaxations between rare-earth elements, which leads to a strong downconversion emission around 1530 nm under 808 nm excitation. After passivation with NaYF4 shell and phase transfer with highly PEGylated mesoporous silica layer, the nanocomposites with excellent colloidal stability and bright NIR-IIb emission were obtained. With long blood circulation time in vivo, the fabricated nanocomposites enable high resolution and contrast luminescence imaging of the blood vessels and tumors in living mice. Moreover, the rare-earth nanocrystals with superior optical properties also hold great promise for various applications in optical sensing and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Probes functioning in the second near-infrared window (1000-1700 nm, NIR-II) exhibit higher resolution and diminished auto-fluorescence compared to those in the traditional NIR region (700-950 nm). Here, we designed and synthesized rare earth ion doped probes with core/shell/shell structures and bright luminescence in the NIR-II region excited at 808 nm. With the doping of Ce3+ ions, the emission intensity of Er3+ at 1530 nm increased 10 times, while the upconversion luminescence decreased to less than 1%. After being modified with polyacrylic acid and polyethylene glycol, the as-obtained water-soluble probe exhibits continuous high-resolution for distinguishing 0.25 mm blood vessels even 10 h after injection. Noteworthily, the imaging of tumors was achieved by injecting the probe, indicating that the designed NIR-II probe has sufficient brightness and the ability to passively target tumor tissue.

Abstract:Multimodality molecular imaging has recently attracted much attention, because it can take advantage of individual imaging modalities by fusing together information from several molecular imaging techniques. Herein, we report a multifunctional lanthanide-based nanoparticle for near-infrared to near-infrared (NIR-to-NIR) upconversion luminescence (UCL), X-ray computed tomography (CT) and T1-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) trimodality in-vivo imaging. By careful selection of the lanthanide elements, core–shell structured lanthanide-based nanoparticles, NaLuF4:Yb3+,Tm3+@SiO2-GdDTPA nanoparticles (UCNP@SiO2-GdDTPA) have been designed and synthesized. We also prove that the application of UCNP@SiO2-GdDTPA for NIR-to-NIR UCL, CT and MRI multi-modality in-vivo imaging can be established successfully. In addition, the biological toxicity of UCNP@SiO2-GdDTPA is evaluated by the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay and histological analysis of viscera sections.
Nd3+-doped LiYF4 nanocrystals for bio-imaging in the second near-infrared window

Abstract:The fluorescent probes working in the near-infrared (NIR) window have unparalleled advantages of a high penetration depth and low interference from autofluorescence. In this paper we introduced a rare-earth doped nanoprobe working in this region with a narrow emission band, a high efficiency, and good bio-compatibility. The newly-developed host material LiYF4 managed to strengthen the emission intensity and generate a fine structure of the emission peaks. After the optimization of the doping ratio of Nd3+ and surface modification, the LiYF4: 5%Nd3+ probe could reach a penetration depth of 3-5 mm and could be successfully utilized in lymphatic imaging, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 14.8 in vivo and a resolution of similar to 0.2 mm in circulatory imaging. This probe may be further used in bio-detection and the host material itself may replace the traditional NaYF4 in some aspects of applications.
Fluoride Nanocrystals and Quantum Dots Nanocomposite for Efficient Luminescence Nanothermometer in Nir-Ii Biological Window

Abstract:Biosensors working in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) spectral region have recently gained great attention owning to their deep tissue bioimaging and high spatiotemporal resolution. However, there is still a challenge to develop efficient nanothermometers based on NIR-II luminescence. Herein, we present a pioneering advancement in the field of nanothermometry by synthesizing a novel nanothermometer, a composite of fluoride nanocrystals and quantum dots. This NaYF4:1Nd-Ag2S QDs@SiO2 nanocomposite demonstrates exceptional functionality, being excited by a single light irradiation at 808nm for NIR-II luminescence imaging. Notably, the composite emits at two distinct wavelengths-1064 nm and 1125nm, attributable to Nd3+ and Ag2S QDs, respectively. This unique emission profile enables deeper tissue penetration, mitigating overheating risks compared to conventional excitation sources at 980nm. Furthermore, the nanomaterials exhibit remarkable temperature-sensing capabilities, with maximum sensitivities of 0.81%K-1 (SR) at 333K. These superior sensitivities outperform many existing temperature sensors relying on thermally coupled Stark sublevels. The SiO2 matrix not only encapsulates and protects the fluoride nanocrystals and quantum dots but also shields them from aqueous environments, ensuring outstanding luminescence stability. Our findings highlight the potential of this nanothermometer as a highly efficient temperature sensor with promising applications in cutting-edge bioapplications. This development introduces a new frontier in temperature sensing and bioimaging, showcasing its potential for transformative contributions to the field.
Biodegradable Inorganic Upconversion Nanocrystals for in Vivo Applications

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped inorganic upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) are promising as fluorescent diagnostic and therapeutic agents for in vivo applications ranging from biological imaging to disease theragnostics. However, all currently available lanthanide-doped inorganic UCNCs are not biodegradable and thus cannot be harmlessly eliminated from the body of living organism during a reasonable period of time, making their clinical translations nearly impossible. Here, we report a class of red-emitting biodegradable UCNCs based on Yb3+/Er3+-doped inorganic potassium heptafluozirconate (K3ZrF7:Yb/Er) that features dynamically "soft" crystal lattice containing water-soluble [ZrF7]3- cluster and K+ cation. The red-emitting K3ZrF7:Yb/Er UCNCs exhibit a pH-dependent biodegradation capability upon exposure to water both in vitro and in vivo, and of which the rapid biodegradation rate, monitored by using the intrinsic red upconversion luminescence, can be tuned particularly in mild acidic tumor microenvironment (pH, ~5-6). More importantly, the final biodegradation products of K3ZrF7:Yb/Er UCNCs can be excreted from the body of mouse in a short period of time with no evidence of toxicity, in stark contrast to the non-degradable β-NaYF4:Yb/Er UCNCs that primarily accumulate in the main organs of mouse. These findings described here unambiguously would benefit the future biomedical applications and clinical translations of lanthanide-doped inorganic UCNCs.
Enhancement of Near-Infrared Emission Through Gd3+ Mediated Energy Transfer in Fluoride Nanoparticles under X-ray Excitation

Abstract:High energy X-rays have been widely employed in biological and medical fields because of its unlimited penetration depth in biological tissues and near-infrared (NIR) emission is considered as a preferred signal in bio-imaging and biosensing. However, it remains a big challenge for nanoparticles to emit high intensity NIR light upon X-ray radiation due to the presence of defects and material's intrinsic low X-ray absorption ability. In this work, we prepare NaLuF4: Gd, Tm nanoparticles with different doping levels of Gd3+ and Tm3+ ions and systematically study the NIR emission properties under X-ray irradiation. NaLuF4: 20Gd, 1 Tm nanoparticles exhibits similar to 3.5 times stronger radioluminescence at 800 nm as compared to solely Tm3+ doped nanoparticles. When X-ray induced electrons and holes recombine, Gd3+ ions serve as energy absorber and transfer the optical energy to Tm3+ ions. Excessive amount of Gd3+ ions will result in efficient energy flow to defects and apparent decreased NIR emission which can be confirmed by the lifetime curves of H-3(4) states of Tm3+ ion. We further examine the X-ray-induced afterglow intensity of nanoparticles at 800 nm and demonstrate conceptually bio-imaging with a deep penetration depth using the developed nanoparticles. The clear picture taken by a NIR camera indicates the NaLuF4: 20Gd, 1 Tm nanoparticles can be used a promising probe for X-ray luminescence optical imaging.
