Abstract:Understanding how trees prioritize carbon gain at the cost of drought vulnerability under severe drought conditions is crucial for predicting which genetic groups and individuals will be resilient to future climate conditions. In this study, we investigated variations in growth, tree-ring anatomy as well as carbon and oxygen isotope ratios to assess the sensitivity and the xylem formation process in response to an episode of severe drought in 29 mature white spruce ( Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) families grown in a common garden trial. During the drought episode, the majority of families displayed decreased growth and exhibited either sustained or increased intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), which was largely influenced by reduced stomatal conductance as revealed by the dual carbon‐oxygen isotope approach. Different water-use strategies were detected within white spruce populations in response to drought conditions. Our results revealed intraspecific variation in the prevailing physiological mechanisms underlying drought response within and among populations of Picea glauca . The presence of different genetic groups reflecting diverse water-use strategies within this largely-distributed conifer is likely to lessen the negative effects of drought and decrease the overall forest ecosystems' sensitivity to it.

Abstract:Knowledge of the physiological mechanisms underlying species vulnerability to drought is critical to better understand patterns of tree mortality. Investigating plant adaptive strategies to drought should thus help to fill this knowledge gap, especially in tropical rainforests exhibiting high functional diversity. In a semi-controlled drought experiment on 12 rainforest tree species, we investigated the diversity in hydraulic strategies and whether they determined the ability of saplings to use stored non-structural carbohydrates during an extreme imposed drought. We further explored the importance of water- and carbon-use strategies in relation to drought-survival through a modelling approach. Hydraulic strategies varied considerably across species with a continuum between dehydration- tolerance and -avoidance. During dehydration leading to hydraulic failure and irrespective of hydraulic strategies, species showed strong declines in whole-plant starch concentrations and a maintenance or even an increase in soluble sugar concentrations potentially favouring osmotic adjustments. Residual water losses mediated the trade-off between time to hydraulic failure and growth, suggesting that it is linked to the 'fast-slow' continuum of plant performances and that dehydration avoidance is an effective drought-survival strategy at the sapling stage. Further investigations on residual water losses may be key to understanding the response of tropical rainforest tree communities to climate change.

[A case of successfully repeated resections of pulmonary metastasis after hepatectomy of hepatocellular carcinoma].

Abstract:A 73-year-old woman was diagnosed with solitary hepatocellular carcinoma (18 cm in diameter) in the right lobe. Right hepatic lobectomy was performed in March 2004. Solitary pulmonary metastasis in the left lung was detected by CT scan in April 2006. Thoracoscopic resection of pulmonary metastasis was performed. But in February 2007, solitary pulmonary metastasis in the right lung was detected by CT again. Second thoracoscopic pulmonary resection was performed. Fifty-one months after the initial surgery, she is alive without recurrence in the lung. In patients with pulmonary metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma, if recurrence in the remnant liver is well controlled and pulmonary metastasis is completely resectable, repeated resections of pulmonary metastasis can be an effective treatment and improve survival.

Abstract:Drought affects plant growth and has become a serious problem worldwide. Populus species have different drought tolerance and sensitivity abilities. In order to evaluate the mechanism of drought stress tolerance in different cultivated Populus species distributed in China, the response to drought in the morphology and physiology of three poplars clones, NL-895, NL-351 and NL-3412 was investigated. The growth, gas exchange capacity, water use efficiency, antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation were measured in order to evaluate differences among different genotypes in responses to two watering regimes (80% and 30% of field capacity). Our results indicated that drought stress had serious adverse effects on the seedlings as the biomass, leaf area, nett photosynthetic rate (Pn) and chlorophyll content were decreased while the activities of antioxidative enzymes were increased and the relative electric conductivity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were enhanced. The results showed Populus possessed an effective self-protective mechanism to relieve the inhibition of growth induced by water deficit through increasing waster use efficiency, adjusting osmotic membrane and decreasing plant growth. These findings deepened our understanding of drought-tolerance mechanism in Populus.

Abstract:Stable hydraulic conductivity in forest trees maintains healthy tree crowns and contributes to productivity in forest ecosystems. Drought conditions break down this relationship, but the mechanisms are poorly known and may depend on drought severity. To increase the understanding of changes in hydraulic conductivity during drought, we determined hydraulic parameters in Populus euphratica Oliv. (P. euphratica) in naturally arid conditions and in a simulated severe drought using a high-pressure flow meter. The results showed that leaf-specific hydraulic conductance (LSC) of leaf blades was less variable in mild drought, and increased significantly in severe drought. Plants attempted to maintain stability in leaf blade LSC under moderate water stress. In extreme drought, LSC was enhanced by increasing hydraulic conductance in plant parts with less hydraulic limitation, decreasing it in other parts, and decreasing leaf area; this mechanism protected the integrity of water transport in portions of tree crowns, and induced scorched branches and partial mortality in other parts of crowns. We conclude that limitation in water supply and elastic regulation of hydraulic characteristics may drive the mortality of tree branches as a result of severe drought. Evaluation of adaptive water transport capacity in riparian plants in arid areas provides a scientific basis for riparian forest restoration.
Mediterranean trees vulnerability to climate change will not be minimized through hydraulic safety traits adjustments.

Abstract:Climate change in the Mediterranean region leads to an intensification of summer droughts. These episodes of extreme water stress threaten the survival of tree species and, by the same token, would affect the structure and ecosystem services of woodlands. Indeed, in conditions of prolonged and intense drought, one of the major risks for trees is the hydraulic failure due to high embolism level. Xylem embolism risk depends essentially on various leaf and hydraulic traits including (i) the vulnerability of their xylem to cavitation, (ii) the turgor loss point (a surrogate for stomatal control) and (iii) their cuticular transpiration (gmin). The two former traits can be used to compute hydraulic safety margins (HSM). In order to assess whether trees will survive future climatic conditions, it is necessary to quantify and assess the plasticity of these traits to intensified drought. In this study, we used three rainfall exclusion experiments established in mature forests in south-eastern France (Font-blanche, Pu&#233;chabon and O3HP experimental sites) to measure these traits and evaluate their ability to adjust to aggravated drought conditions for three Mediterranean widespread species: Quercus ilex, Quercus Pubescens, and Pinus halepensis. We performed pressure-volume curves of trees from rainfall exclusion and control plots to see if adjustments of gmin and leaf hydraulic traits involved in stomatal regulation occurred in these three species. Using the optical method and cavitron, we also quantified the plasticity of xylem vulnerability to cavitation by comparing the values of water potential leading to a 50% reduction in plant hydraulic conductance (P50). Our results show that Quercus pubescens has the lowest HSM while Quercus ilex has the highest. In addition, gmin is higher for Quercus pubescens than for the other two species. All together these results suggest that Quercus pubescens is the most vulnerable to drought among the three studied. Globally, for most traits and species no significant difference was found between treatments. The only exception was for Quercus ilex that exhibited lower turgor loss point (&#936;tlp) in the dry treatment. Drought acclimation for these species may rather depend on other traits, such as leaf area reduction or rooting depth. To integrate the role of these traits to estimate the historic and future mortality risk for these species, the use of hydraulic based models will be of interest.
Floodplain ecohydrology: Climatic, anthropogenic, and local physical controls on partitioning of water sources to riparian trees

Abstract:Seasonal and annual partitioning of water within river floodplains has important implications for ecohydrologic links between the water cycle and tree growth. Climatic and hydrologic shifts alter water distribution between floodplain storage reservoirs (e.g., vadose, phreatic), affecting water availability to tree roots. Water partitioning is also dependent on the physical conditions that control tree rooting depth (e.g., gravel layers that impede root growth), the sources of contributing water, the rate of water drainage, and water residence times within particular storage reservoirs. We employ instrumental climate records alongside oxygen isotopes within tree rings and regional source waters, as well as topographic data and soil depth measurements, to infer the water sources used over several decades by two co-occurring tree species within a riparian floodplain along the Rhône River in France. We find that water partitioning to riparian trees is influenced by annual (wet versus dry years) and seasonal (spring snowmelt versus spring rainfall) fluctuations in climate. This influence depends strongly on local (tree level) conditions including floodplain surface elevation and subsurface gravel layer elevation. The latter represents the upper limit of the phreatic zone and therefore controls access to shallow groundwater. The difference between them, the thickness of the vadose zone, controls total soil moisture retention capacity. These factors thus modulate the climatic influence on tree ring isotopes. Additionally, we identified growth signatures and tree ring isotope changes associated with recent restoration of minimum streamflows in the Rhône, which made new phreatic water sources available to some trees in otherwise dry years. Drought conditions break down this relationship, but the mechanisms are poorly known. To increase the understanding of the mechanism of hydraulic characteristics during drought, we determined hydraulic parameters in Populus euphratica Oliv. (P. euphratica) in a time-series of drought using a high-pressure flow meter. We found that P. euphratica could enhance hydraulic transport in severe drought stress under a threshold of soil water content. Drought-induced loss of hydraulic conductance could seriously impair water transport capacity. The soil water content of about 4.5% in the rhizosphere could lead to canopy mortality yet maintain live roots. Hydraulic conductance could be changed under drought stress as a consequence of changes in the anatomical structure and physiology. Furthermore, there was also a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and safety. The consideration of hydraulic efficiency was first within the range of hydraulic safety limit. Once the hydraulic safety limit was reached, safety would be taken as the first consideration and hydraulic efficiency would be reduced. Research on the mechanism of hydraulic properties in riparian plants in arid areas provides a scientific basis for riparian forest restoration.

Abstract:Recent changes in the floodplain forests of Central Europe, caused mainly by changes in hydrological management and the increased frequency of droughts due to climate change, have led to severe degradation of floodplain ecosystems. Our main objective was to determine the sensitivity of trees to drought by observing the response of the tree phenology, stem radial growth, and physiology (sap flow) of three predominant tree species, namely English oak, narrow-leaved ash, and common hornbeam, to the environmental variables (climate). Stem radial growth began before bud break in ring-porous oak and ash, whereas in diffuse-porous hornbeam, growth onset occurred after leaf formation. The early onset with intense growth during favorable months (April–May) observed in ring-porous species was a major prerequisite for the successful growth of oak and ash at this site. Tree water deficit (TWD), an indicator of stem hydration, was triggered by decreasing soil moisture in all species, and was most prominent in ash, followed by oak. Intriguingly, sap flow was decoupled from TWD in all species and was driven primarily by evaporative demand from the atmosphere. Oak was the least conservative in regulating sap flow under atmospheric drought followed by hornbeam, whereas ash was most restricted and reduced its transpiration during dry periods. In contrast, ash was characterized by the highest radial growth and growth-based water-use efficiency. The lower water storage capacity of oak and ash is likely compensated by deep rooting and drought avoidance strategies, respectively. Tree species that tend to use surface soil water could be severely limited by more extractive species such as hornbeam. Despite the contrasting leaf and wood phenology, stomatal control, and rooting depth among the studied floodplain tree species, they exhibited analogous sap flow and water storage dynamics responses to drier conditions that enabled them to co-exist in the South Moravian Region. Nevertheless, our results suggest that the severe droughts and human-induced alterations in groundwater pose serious threats to floodplain forests in Central Europe, with certain tree species being unable to adapt to these altered conditions.

Abstract:Vegetation in water-limited ecosystems relies strongly on access to deep water reserves to withstand dry periods. Most of these ecosystems have shallow soils over deep groundwater reserves. Understanding the functioning and functional plasticity of species-specific root systems and the patterns of or differences in the use of water sources under more frequent or intense droughts is therefore necessary to properly predict the responses of seasonally dry ecosystems to future climate. We used stable isotopes to investigate the seasonal patterns of water uptake by a sclerophyll forest on sloped terrain with shallow soils. We assessed the effect of a long-term experimental drought (12 years) and the added impact of an extreme natural drought that produced widespread tree mortality and crown defoliation. The dominant species, Quercus ilex, Arbutus unedo and Phillyrea latifolia, all have dimorphic root systems enabling them to access different water sources in space and time. The plants extracted water mainly from the soil in the cold and wet seasons but increased their use of groundwater during the summer drought. Interestingly, the plants subjected to the long-term experimental drought shifted water uptake toward deeper (10-35 cm) soil layers during the wet season and reduced groundwater uptake in summer, indicating plasticity in the functional distribution of fine roots that dampened the effect of our experimental drought over the long term. An extreme drought in 2011, however, further reduced the contribution of deep soil layers and groundwater to transpiration, which resulted in greater crown defoliation in the drought-affected plants. This study suggests that extreme droughts aggravate moderate but persistent drier conditions (simulated by our manipulation) and may lead to the depletion of water from groundwater reservoirs and weathered bedrock, threatening the preservation of these Mediterranean ecosystems in their current structures and compositions.

Abstract:Drought‐induced groundwater decline and warming associated with climate change are primary threats to dryland riparian woodlands. We used the extreme 2012–2019 drought in southern California as a natural experiment to assess how differences in water‐use strategies and groundwater dependence may influence the drought susceptibility of dryland riparian tree species with overlapping distributions. We analyzed tree‐ring stable carbon and oxygen isotopes collected from two cottonwood species (Populus trichocarpa and P. fremontii) along the semi‐arid Santa Clara River. We also modeled tree source water δ18O composition to compare with observed source water δ18O within the floodplain to infer patterns of groundwater reliance. Our results suggest that both species functioned as facultative phreatophytes that used shallow soil moisture when available but ultimately relied on groundwater to maintain physiological function during drought. We also observed apparent species differences in water‐use strategies and groundwater dependence related to their regional distributions. P. fremontii was constrained to more arid river segments and ostensibly used a greater proportion of groundwater to satisfy higher evaporative demand. P. fremontii maintained ∆13C at pre‐drought levels up until the peak of the drought, when trees experienced a precipitous decline in ∆13C. This response pattern suggests that trees prioritized maintaining photosynthetic processes over hydraulic safety, until a critical point. In contrast, P. trichocarpa showed a more gradual and sustained reduction in ∆13C, indicating that drought conditions induced stomatal closure and higher water use efficiency. This strategy may confer drought avoidance for P. trichocarpa while increasing its susceptibility to anticipated climate warming.

Abstract:In the context of rising global temperatures and their impact on weather patterns and water cycles, understanding the relationship between vegetation and hydroclimatic forcing is critical. Riparian forests are highly vulnerable to hydroclimatic variability, which can significantly affect water availability in the soil on which they primarily depend. Along large rivers, hydroclimatic forcings can vary, resulting in different vegetative responses depending on the local climatic context and site conditions. To explore this, we studied riparian forest greenness along a 512‐km river corridor with a 3° latitudinal gradient, analysing the relative contributions of climate (latitude, season, temperature, precipitation) and local hydrological conditions (groundwater). Here, we show that riparian forests along a latitudinal gradient respond differently to hydroclimatic controls, with vegetative dynamics that can be attenuated or accentuated by local site conditions. We combined Sentinel‐2 satellite Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data over seven years (2016–2022) with hydroclimatic data to examine riparian forest greenness responses to latitudinal, seasonal and interannual hydroclimatic variability. We found contrasting hydroclimatic controls across the latitudinal gradient, with the northernmost sites predominantly controlled by temperature, while those further south are limited by water availability. In addition, we identified temperature as the primary driver of NDVI throughout the growing season, either positively or negatively. Late season precipitation and high phreatic water availability positively influenced NDVI, emphasising the role of local conditions in governing riparian forest resilience. This study enhances understanding of climate controls on riparian tree greenness, which is critical for designing effective landscape‐scale riparian ecosystem management and restoration strategies.

Response of Fine-Root Traits of Populus tomentosa to Drought in Shallow and Deep Soil

Abstract:Understanding the response characteristics of fine roots to soil drought of different degrees is essential for revealing the ecological adaptability of trees to different water environments and diverse plant resource absorption strategies. This study focused on a Chinese white poplar (Populus tomentosa) plantation stand, which gradually experienced the process of deep soil drying. In 2019 and 2021, by measuring the fine-root length density (FRLD), mean root diameter (MRD), specific root length (SRL), and root tissue density (RTD) of 1920 root samples and continuously monitoring the soil water content (SWC) in 0–600 cm soil layers, we explored the response characteristics of fine-root distributions and morphological traits relative to soil drought of different degrees. The results showed that P. tomentosa primarily changed the fine-root vertical distribution rather than the total amount of fine roots for coping with soil drought of different degrees. Shallow soil drought induced more fine-root distributions in the deep soil layer, while drought in both shallow and deep soil further aggravated this trend. Shallow soil drought restrained shallow fine-root growth, yet deep soil drought promoted deep fine-root growth. The very deep fine roots (400–600 cm) were more sensitive to soil drought than shallow fine roots. The shallow soil drought significantly increased the SRL of very deep fine roots; in contrast, when deep soil drought also occurred, the MRD and SRL significantly increased and decreased, respectively. In addition, fine-root morphological traits exhibited significant vertical spatial and temporal variation. MRD increased and then decreased, and the RTD gradually decreased with depth, while SRL had an increased trend in the very deep soil layer (400–600 cm). When the rainy season came, MRD and SRL increased and decreased, respectively. In conclusion, when facing gradual deep soil drying, P. tomentosa will use a large range of rooting patterns to meet the water demand of the canopy. These patterns range from "drought tolerant strategies" by distributing more fine roots in the deeper soil layer where water is abundant to "drought tolerant strategies" by changing very deep fine-root morphological traits to improve water-absorbing and transporting efficiencies. Our findings provide insight into the ecological adaption strategy of tree root systems relative to soil drought of different degrees in arid and semi-arid regions and provide crucial theoretical support for developing water management technologies to cope with deep soil drying under climate change.

Abstract:Under drought stress, desert riparian forest plants are highly self-regulating and have their own unique water use and regulation strategies, which can respond positively in several aspects such as physiology, ecology, and individual phenotypes when coping and adapting to the stresses brought by external environmental changes. In addition, as an important component of arid zone ecosystems, desert riparian forest plants maintain the cycling process of energy and material in desert areas. Therefore, it is of great ecological value to study the role played by desert riparian forest plants in desertification control and biodiversity conservation in arid zones. The purpose of this study is to provide basic data and scientific basis for the conservation, and restoration of desert riparian forests in the inland river basin of arid zone. In this paper, the physiological and ecological responses of desert riparian plants under drought stress were analyzed by reviewing the literature and focusing on the key scientific issues such as drought avoidance mechanisms, water use, and water redistribution, and the relationship between interspecific water competition and resource sharing of desert riparian plants. The results showed that: (1) In the inland river basin of arid zone, desert riparian plants show a mutual coordination of increasing soluble sugars, proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), and decreasing peroxidase (POD), to form a unique drought avoidance mechanism, and improve their drought tolerance by changing leaf stomatal conductance resulted from regulating abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin (CTK) content. (2) Desert riparian forest plants have their own unique water use and regulation strategies. When the degree of drought stress increased, Populus euphratica enhanced the water flow of dominant branches by actively sacrificing the inferior branches to ensure and improve the overall survival chances of the plant, while Tamarix ramosissima weaken hydraulic conductance, and increase subsurface material inputs by reducing plant height to cope with drought stress. (3) The root systems of desert riparian plants have hydraulic uplift and water redistribution functions, and, in the hydraulic uplift process of P. euphratica and T. ramosissima root systems, there is a possibility of assisting with other species in water utilization and the existence of a resource sharing mechanism.

Abstract:Recent European heatwaves have significantly impacted forest ecosystems, leading to increased plant water stress. Advances in land surface models aim to improve the representation of vegetation drought responses by incorporating plant hydraulics into the plant functional type (PFT) classification system. However, reliance on PFTs may inadequately capture the diverse plant hydraulic traits (PHTs), potentially biasing transpiration and vegetation water stress representations. The detection of vegetation drought stress is further complicated by the mixing of different tree species and forest patches. This study uses the Community Land Model version 5.0 to simulate an experimental mixed‐forest catchment with configurations representing standalone, patched mixed, and fully‐mixed forests. Biome‐generic, PFT‐specific, or species‐specific PHTs are employed. Results emphasize the crucial role of accurately representing mixed forests in reproducing observed vegetation water stress and transpiration fluxes for both broadleaf and needleleaf tree species. The dominant vegetation fraction is a key determinant, influencing aggregated vegetation response patterns. Segregation level in PHT parameterizations shapes differences between observed and simulated transpiration fluxes. Simulated root water potential emerges as a potential metric for detecting vegetation stress periods. However, the model's plant hydraulic system has limitations in reproducing the long‐term effects of extreme weather events on needleleaf tree species. These findings highlight the complexity of modeling mixed forests and underscore the need for improved representation of plant diversity in land surface models to enhance the understanding of vegetation water stress under changing climate conditions.

Abstract:In riverine ecosystems, human‐induced stressors related to flow regulation and bank stabilisation have accumulated over time. The restoration of these highly anthropised ecosystems has become a major issue over the last few decades, with ambitious stated objectives. However, while the individual impact of flow regulation and channelisation on river functioning has been extensively studied, the response of ecological communities to multiple co‐occurring human‐induced stressors remains largely unexplored. Using a sampling design based on five river reaches in the Rhône catchment, ranging from unregulated in flow and bedload transport to intensively regulated reaches, we sought to understand how the accumulation of anthropogenic stressors influenced the functional response of riparian plants communities on gravel bars. By using 12 ecological and morphological traits, we performed a classification analysis to construct six riparian guilds and investigated whether their representativeness, as well as the mean value of individual traits, varied with increasing levels of anthropogenic stressors. Species cover and redundancy in several guilds increased or decreased significantly with increasing pressures. Thus, the guild of small taproot herbs with low nutrient and soil moisture requirements (xero‐oligotro‐taproot species guild) and the guild of taproot herbs adapted to very bright and dry conditions (mesoxero‐mesotro‐taproot species guild) dominated the unregulated reaches with active bedload transport. Conversely, regulated reaches with stabilised baseflow and inactive transport were dominated by the guild of flood‐tolerant trees (hygro‐perennial tall species guild) and the guild of vegetatively reproducing and flood‐tolerant perennial herbs (hygro‐perennial clonal species guild). Analysis of individual traits revealed a shift in environmental conditions, from full light to shade tolerance and from dry to humid, with increasing anthropogenic stressors. In response to this decrease in drought levels, plants traits shifted from annual to perennial species, from sexual to vegetative strategies and from taproots to a fibrous root system. Our results highlight the accumulated effects that anthropogenic stressors can have on riparian communities, inducing a progressive shift in certain traits related to life history, reproductive strategies, and drought adaptations. This effect on a set of shared traits reveals the strong influence that human infrastructures can have on the ecological niche of species and the morphological adaptations of riparian vegetation. From an applied point of view, and for highly anthropised rivers, our results suggest that restoration actions targeting a single stressor will not be sufficient to reorient riparian plant communities towards an ecological state closer to reference systems. Since human‐induced stressors have often deeply altered the flow and sediment regimes of rivers, a more integrated approach based on the restoration of erosion and flooding processes is essential to allow the expression of a wider diversity of riparian plant communities and habitats.

Abstract:The acclimation of plants to water deficit is the result of many different physiological and biochemical mechanisms. To gain a better understanding of drought stress acclimation and tolerance mechanisms in Populus cathayana Rehder, we carried out an integrated physiological and comparative proteomic analysis on the drought stress responses of two contrasting populations originating from wet and dry regions in western China. The plantlets were subjected to continuous drought stress by withholding soil water content at 25% of field capacity (FC) for 45 days, while the control treatments were kept at 100% FC. Drought stress significantly inhibited plant growth, decreased net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of leaves, increased the relative electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and, at the same time, accumulated soluble sugars and free proline in both populations tested. The population from the dry climate region exhibited stronger tolerance to drought stress compared with the wet climate population. The proteomic analyses resulted in the identification of 40 drought-responsive proteins. The functional categories of these proteins include the regulation of transcription and translation, photosynthesis, cytoskeleton, secondary metabolism, HSPs/chaperones, redox homeostasis and defense response. The results suggest that poplars' tolerance to drought stress relates to the control of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and to osmoprotective capacity. The differential regulation of some drought-responsive proteins, such as HSPs and the enzymes related to redox homeostasis and regulation of secondary metabolism, plays an important role in poplars' tolerance and acclimation to drought stress. In conclusion, acclimation to water deficit involves changes in cellular metabolism and the regulation of gene networks. The present study not only provides new insights into the mechanisms of acclimation and tolerance to drought stress in different poplar populations but also provides clues for improving poplars' drought tolerance through breeding or genetic engineering.

Abstract:Droughts in a warming climate have become more common and more extreme, making understanding forest responses to water stress increasingly pressing. Analysis of water stress in trees has long focused on water potential in xylem and leaves, which influences stomatal closure and water flow through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. At the same time, changes of vegetation water content (VWC) are linked to a range of tree responses, including fluxes of water and carbon, mortality, flammability, and more. Unlike water potential, which requires demanding in situ measurements, VWC can be retrieved from remote sensing measurements, particularly at microwave frequencies using radar and radiometry. Here, we highlight key frontiers through which VWC has the potential to significantly increase our understanding of forest responses to water stress. To validate remote sensing observations of VWC at landscape scale and to better relate them to data assimilation model parameters, we introduce an ecosystem-scale analogue of the pressure-volume curve, the non-linear relationship between average leaf or branch water potential and water content commonly used in plant hydraulics. The sources of variability in these ecosystem-scale pressure-volume curves and their relationship to forest response to water stress are discussed. We further show to what extent diel, seasonal, and decadal dynamics of VWC reflect variations in different processes relating the tree response to water stress. VWC can also be used for inferring belowground conditions – which are difficult to impossible to observe directly. Lastly, we discuss how a dedicated geostationary spaceborne observational system for VWC, when combined with existing datasets, can capture diel and seasonal water dynamics to advance the science and applications of global forest vulnerability to future droughts.

Abstract:In the midwestern United States, models predict extended summer heatwaves and increasingly frequent and prolonged drought conditions. In the Chicago region, the potential for large-scale mortality of white oak trees (Quercus alba) coupled with the ongoing decline of white oak sapling recruitment are major concerns for researchers and practitioners. In this study, we determined the sources of water used by mature white oak trees and saplings in three qualitatively different sites within a remnant oak forest in Chicago during the 2021 drought. We investigated soil moisture dynamics (volumetric water content, VWC) and water isotope composition of leaf tissues (δD, δ18O), rainwater, and groundwater. These data were linked to sapling height (proxy for biomass) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) functional types. We predicted that: (i) mature oak trees use deeper water sources and conducted hydraulic redistribution (HR), and (ii) mature trees shared water with saplings during dry periods via long-distance ECM functional types. Soil moisture decreased progressively from June to October (spring to fall), with August and September having the lowest moisture (<20 % VWC). Following rainfall recharge, temporal patterns of soil moisture showed gravity drainage and then ongoing stair-stepwise drawdown consistent with plant evapotranspiration. Leaf δD and δ18O values in mature trees and saplings were consistent with water uptake from rainfall and subsequent enrichment via evapotranspiration. In two sites, mature trees and saplings demonstrated distinct δD: δ18O slopes, with mature trees more enriched than saplings. In the third site, mature trees and saplings δD: δ18O slopes overlapped but here, the ECM community was dominated by contact-type ECM and sapling height increased with distance from the mature oak. Our findings indicate that HR was not a component of site ecohydrology, and future climate conditions may present increasing challenges for white oak recruitment as both mature trees and saplings compete for limited rainfall-derived soil moisture.
