Abstract:Climate change in the Mediterranean region leads to an intensification of summer droughts. These episodes of extreme water stress threaten the survival of tree species and, by the same token, would affect the structure and ecosystem services of woodlands. Indeed, in conditions of prolonged and intense drought, one of the major risks for trees is the hydraulic failure due to high embolism level. Xylem embolism risk depends essentially on various leaf and hydraulic traits including (i) the vulnerability of their xylem to cavitation, (ii) the turgor loss point (a surrogate for stomatal control) and (iii) their cuticular transpiration (gmin). The two former traits can be used to compute hydraulic safety margins (HSM). In order to assess whether trees will survive future climatic conditions, it is necessary to quantify and assess the plasticity of these traits to intensified drought. In this study, we used three rainfall exclusion experiments established in mature forests in south-eastern France (Font-blanche, Pu&#233;chabon and O3HP experimental sites) to measure these traits and evaluate their ability to adjust to aggravated drought conditions for three Mediterranean widespread species: Quercus ilex, Quercus Pubescens, and Pinus halepensis. We performed pressure-volume curves of trees from rainfall exclusion and control plots to see if adjustments of gmin and leaf hydraulic traits involved in stomatal regulation occurred in these three species. Using the optical method and cavitron, we also quantified the plasticity of xylem vulnerability to cavitation by comparing the values of water potential leading to a 50% reduction in plant hydraulic conductance (P50). Our results show that Quercus pubescens has the lowest HSM while Quercus ilex has the highest. In addition, gmin is higher for Quercus pubescens than for the other two species. All together these results suggest that Quercus pubescens is the most vulnerable to drought among the three studied. Globally, for most traits and species no significant difference was found between treatments. The only exception was for Quercus ilex that exhibited lower turgor loss point (&#936;tlp) in the dry treatment. Drought acclimation for these species may rather depend on other traits, such as leaf area reduction or rooting depth. To integrate the role of these traits to estimate the historic and future mortality risk for these species, the use of hydraulic based models will be of interest.
Isohydricity and hydraulic isolation explain reduced hydraulic failure risk in an experimental tree species mixture

Abstract:Species mixture is promoted as a crucial management option to adapt forests to climate change. However, there is little consensus on how tree diversity affects tree water stress, and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. By using a greenhouse experiment and a soil-plant-atmosphere hydraulic model, we explored whether and why mixing the isohydric Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis, drought avoidant) and the anisohydric holm oak (Quercus ilex, drought tolerant) affects tree water stress during extreme drought. Our experiment showed that the intimate mixture strongly alleviated Q. ilex water stress while it marginally impacted P. halepensis water stress. Three mechanistic explanations for this pattern are supported by our modelling analysis. First, the difference in stomatal regulation between species allowed Q. ilex trees to benefit from additional soil water in mixture, thereby maintaining higher water potentials and sustaining gas exchange. By contrast, P. halepensis exhibited earlier water stress and stomatal regulation. Second, P. halepensis trees showed stable water potential during drought, although soil water potential strongly decreased, even when grown in a mixture. Model simulations suggested that hydraulic isolation of the root from the soil associated with decreased leaf cuticular conductance was a plausible explanation for this pattern. Third, the higher predawn water potentials for a given soil water potential observed for Q. ilex in mixture can - according to model simulations - be explained by increased soil-to-root conductance, resulting from higher fine root length. This study brings insights into the mechanisms involved in improved drought resistance of mixed species forests.

Abstract:Knowledge of the physiological mechanisms underlying species vulnerability to drought is critical to better understand patterns of tree mortality. Investigating plant adaptive strategies to drought should thus help to fill this knowledge gap, especially in tropical rainforests exhibiting high functional diversity. In a semi-controlled drought experiment on 12 rainforest tree species, we investigated the diversity in hydraulic strategies and whether they determined the ability of saplings to use stored non-structural carbohydrates during an extreme imposed drought. We further explored the importance of water- and carbon-use strategies in relation to drought-survival through a modelling approach. Hydraulic strategies varied considerably across species with a continuum between dehydration- tolerance and -avoidance. During dehydration leading to hydraulic failure and irrespective of hydraulic strategies, species showed strong declines in whole-plant starch concentrations and a maintenance or even an increase in soluble sugar concentrations potentially favouring osmotic adjustments. Residual water losses mediated the trade-off between time to hydraulic failure and growth, suggesting that it is linked to the 'fast-slow' continuum of plant performances and that dehydration avoidance is an effective drought-survival strategy at the sapling stage. Further investigations on residual water losses may be key to understanding the response of tropical rainforest tree communities to climate change.

Abstract:This open, randomised multicenter trial compares the efficacy and safety of Fragmin administered subcutaneously twice daily with standard heparin administered by continuous infusion in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The initial dose of Fragmin is 100 U anti-Xa/kg/12 h and the further doses are adjusted according to the anti-Xa activity between 0.5 and 0.8 U/ml, 3 hours after the morning injection. The initial dose of standard heparin is 240 UI/kg/12 h. The dose adjustments are based on the daily results of APTT (1.5 - 3 times the control). Treatments efficacy are appreciated when comparing the venography performed before and after 10 days of treatment. The safety is evaluated on clinical parameters and iterative biological tests. Sixty-six patients have been included in this study. Efficacy of the two treatments is equivalent with a phlebographic improvement in respectively 79.3 p. 100 (Heparin Group) and 71.0 p. 100 (Fragmin Group) of the cases and an aggravation in 3.4 p. 100 and 6.4 p. 100 (NS) respectively. The frequency of dosage adjustments is lower and the stability of biological tests is better in the Fragmin group. In conclusion, the administration of Fragmin twice daily by subcutaneous route seems to be equivalent at least to standard heparin continuous infusion in the treatment of recent DVT. The better convenience and safety of Fragmin have to be verified on a larger panel of patients.
The combined effects of a long‐term experimental drought and an extreme drought on the use of plant‐water sources in a Mediterranean forest

Abstract:Vegetation in water-limited ecosystems relies strongly on access to deep water reserves to withstand dry periods. Most of these ecosystems have shallow soils over deep groundwater reserves. Understanding the functioning and functional plasticity of species-specific root systems and the patterns of or differences in the use of water sources under more frequent or intense droughts is therefore necessary to properly predict the responses of seasonally dry ecosystems to future climate. We used stable isotopes to investigate the seasonal patterns of water uptake by a sclerophyll forest on sloped terrain with shallow soils. We assessed the effect of a long-term experimental drought (12 years) and the added impact of an extreme natural drought that produced widespread tree mortality and crown defoliation. The dominant species, Quercus ilex, Arbutus unedo and Phillyrea latifolia, all have dimorphic root systems enabling them to access different water sources in space and time. The plants extracted water mainly from the soil in the cold and wet seasons but increased their use of groundwater during the summer drought. Interestingly, the plants subjected to the long-term experimental drought shifted water uptake toward deeper (10-35 cm) soil layers during the wet season and reduced groundwater uptake in summer, indicating plasticity in the functional distribution of fine roots that dampened the effect of our experimental drought over the long term. An extreme drought in 2011, however, further reduced the contribution of deep soil layers and groundwater to transpiration, which resulted in greater crown defoliation in the drought-affected plants. This study suggests that extreme droughts aggravate moderate but persistent drier conditions (simulated by our manipulation) and may lead to the depletion of water from groundwater reservoirs and weathered bedrock, threatening the preservation of these Mediterranean ecosystems in their current structures and compositions.

Abstract:Abstract Trees are at risk of mortality during extreme drought, yet our understanding of the traits that govern the timing of drought-induced hydraulic failure remains limited. To address this, we tested SurEau, a trait-based soil–plant-atmosphere model designed to predict the dynamics of plant dehydration as represented by changes in water potential, against those observed in potted trees of four contrasting species (Pinus halepensis, Populus nigra, Quercus ilex, and Cedrus atlantica) exposed to drought. SurEau was parameterised with a range of plant hydraulic and allometric traits, soil, and climatic variables. We found close correspondence between predicted and observed plant water potential (MPa) dynamics during early phase drought leading to stomatal closure, as well as during latter phase drought leading to hydraulic failure in all four species. A global model’s sensitivity analysis revealed that for a common plant size (leaf area) and soil volume, dehydration times from full hydration to stomatal closure (Tclose) was most strongly controlled by leaf osmotic potential (Pi0) and its influence on stomatal closure, in all four species, while maximum stomatal conductance (gsmax) also contributed to Tclose in Q. ilex and C. atlantica. Dehydration times from stomatal closure to hydraulic failure (Tcav) was most strongly controlled by Pi0, the branch residual conductance (gres), and Q10a sensitivity of gres in the three evergreen species, while xylem embolism resistance (P50) was most influential in the deciduous species Populus nigra. Our findings point to SurEau as a highly useful model for predicting changes in plant water status during drought and suggest adjustments made in key hydraulic traits are potentially beneficial to delaying the onset of drought-induced hydraulic failure in trees.

Abstract:Abstract The drought resilience of forest ecosystems is generally believed to depend on the dominant tree species' hydraulic traits. These traits define the maximum water transport capacity and the degree of vulnerability to hydraulic failure of a tree species. This work evaluates the effect of the intraspecific variability of hydraulic traits on the simulated tree water use in the Community Land Model (CLM, version 5.0). We selected two contrasting broadleaved tree species and performed a series of numerical experiments by modifying the parameters of the plant vulnerability curve and the maximum xylem hydraulic conductance accounting for the variability within each species. Our prescribed parameter sets represent vulnerable and resistant tree responses to the water deficit. At sites with an ample water supply, the resistant configuration simulates reduced water stress and increased transpiration compared to the vulnerable configuration. Meanwhile, the model results are counter‐intuitive at temporarily dry sites when water availability is the limiting factor. The numerical experiments demonstrate the emergent role of the maximum xylem conductance as a modulator of the plant water use strategy and the simulated transpiration within the model. Using the default value for maximum xylem conductance, the model tends to overestimate the early summer transpiration at drier sites, forcing the vegetation to experience unrealistic water stress later in the year. Our findings suggest that the parameterization of maximum xylem conductance is an important yet unresolved problem in the CLM and similar land surface models.

Abstract:Climate change is predicted to increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, exacerbating soil drought, and thus enhancing tree evaporative demand and mortality. Yet, few studies have addressed the longer-term drought acclimation strategy of trees, particularly the importance of morphological vs . hydraulic plasticity. Using a long-term (20 years) irrigation experiment in a natural forest, we investigated the acclimation of Pinus sylvestris morpho-anatomical (stomatal anatomy and crown density) and hydraulic traits (leaf water potential, vulnerability to cavitation Ψ 50 , hydraulic conductivity K s , and tree water deficit TWD) to prolonged changes in soil moisture. We found that low water availability reduced twig water potential and increased TWD during the growing season. Still, the trees showed limited adjustments in most branch-level hydraulic traits (Ψ 50 and K s ) and needle anatomy. In contrast, trees acclimated to prolonged irrigation by increasing their crown density and, hence, the canopy water demand. This study demonstrates that despite substantial canopy adjustments, P. sylvestris may be vulnerable to extreme droughts because of limited adjustment potential in their hydraulic system. While sparser canopies reduce the water demand, such shifts take decades to occur under chronic water deficits and might not mitigate short-term extreme drought events.

Abstract:Stable hydraulic conductivity in forest trees maintains the survival of trees which contribute to productivity in forest ecosystems. Drought conditions break down this relationship, but the mechanisms are poorly known. To increase the understanding of the mechanism of hydraulic characteristics during drought, we determined hydraulic parameters in Populus euphratica Oliv. (P. euphratica) in a time-series of drought using a high-pressure flow meter. We found that P. euphratica could enhance hydraulic transport in severe drought stress under a threshold of soil water content. Drought-induced loss of hydraulic conductance could seriously impair water transport capacity. The soil water content of about 4.5% in the rhizosphere could lead to canopy mortality yet maintain live roots. Hydraulic conductance could be changed under drought stress as a consequence of changes in the anatomical structure and physiology. Furthermore, there was also a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and safety. The consideration of hydraulic efficiency was first within the range of hydraulic safety limit. Once the hydraulic safety limit was reached, safety would be taken as the first consideration and hydraulic efficiency would be reduced. Research on the mechanism of hydraulic properties in riparian plants in arid areas provides a scientific basis for riparian forest restoration.

Abstract:Abstract The hydraulic vulnerability segmentation (HVS) hypothesis implies the existence of differences in embolism resistance between plant organs along the xylem pathway and has been suggested as an adaptation allowing the differential preservation of more resource-rich tissues during drought stress. Compound leaves in trees are considered a low-cost means of increasing leaf area and may thus be expected to show evidence of strong HVS, given the tendency of compound-leaved tree species to shed their leaf units during drought. However, the existence and role of HVS in compound-leaved tree species during drought remain uncertain. We used an optical visualization technique to estimate embolism occurrence in stems, petioles, and leaflets of shoots in two compound-leaved tree species, Manchurian ash (Fraxinus mandshurica) and Manchurian walnut (Juglans mandshurica). We found higher (less negative) water potentials corresponding to 50% loss of conductivity (P50) in leaflets and petioles than in stems in both species. Overall, we observed a consistent pattern of stem > petiole > leaflet in terms of xylem resistance to embolism and hydraulic safety margins (i.e. the difference between mid-day water potential and P50). The coordinated variation in embolism vulnerability between organs suggests that during drought conditions, trees benefit from early embolism and subsequent shedding of more expendable organs such as leaflets and petioles, as this provides a degree of protection to the integrity of the hydraulic system of the more carbon costly stems. Our results highlight the importance of HVS as an adaptive mechanism of compound-leaved trees to withstand drought stress.

Abstract:Forest ecosystems are known to be vulnerable to climate change. Climate extremes, such as drought events, are expected to increase in duration and frequency in many areas across the globe. Unexpected and prolonged drought events already caused forests dieback all over the world in the last decades, leading to dramatic consequences, such as biodiversity loss, ecosystem services alteration and reduction of carbon sequestration potential. Indeed, in Central Europe, monocultures consisting mostly of&#160; secondary conifer forests, showed low resistance to such events, and their viability is further threatened by the interaction with other biotic and abiotic factors. In this context, the need of a deeper understanding of the physiological mechanisms behind the tree response to extreme drought eventsis fundamental. The present study, developed under the network of the CARE4C Project (Carbon smart forestry under climate change GA 778322), aims at investigating Pinus sylvestris xylem plasticity in response to extreme drought. We selected P. sylvestris pure forests in contrasting climatic zones of Europe, i.e. continental (Poland) and Mediterranean (Spain), to study P. sylvestris xylem plasticity to extreme drought events under different climatic conditions. Contemporarily, this study aims at comparing the xylem plasticity of P. sylvestris in mono-specific and mixed forests. In the latter, the admixture is with Quercus petraea and Quercus pyrenaica, in Poland and Spain respectively. The responses of P. sylvestris wood anatomical traits, such as tracheid lumen area, cell wall thickness and parenchyma ray area, will be quantified along the entire treering chronologies. Short-term and legacy effects of extreme drought on P. sylvestris wood anatomical traits will be evaluated in order to provide insights about the vulnerability of this speciesin a future climate scenario. Locally, the comparison between P. sylvestris wood anatomical traitsin mono-specific and mixed forests will highlight whether the mixing of species with different ecological needs can affect P. sylvestris performance, ameliorating the resilience of this species to extreme drought events.
True water constraint under a rainfall interception experiment in a Mediterranean shrubland (Northern Tunisia): confronting discrete measurements with a plant–soil water budget model

Abstract:Increased drought length and intensity is expected in the Mediterranean basin under anthropogenic increase in atmospheric CO2, leading to extreme events not yet encountered in the present climate variability. Understanding ecosystems responses and capturing peculiar ecophysiological processes related to these events have been investigated in the field by rainfall manipulation experiments. Quantifying the actual drought faced by the ecosystem under control and dry plots, or among experiments remain a key challenge for explaining functional impacts on plant growth. Full-profile soil water content can be tricky to assess in rocky soils, and time-consuming plant water potential measurements remain a discrete information unable to capture short rainfall pulses. We propose here to fully investigate the water budget of a total rainfall interception manipulation on a Mediterranean shrubland, coupled with a plant–soil water balance model. We could accurately simulate the seasonal course of plant water status, including small rainfall pulses. We then derived yearly estimates of water stress integral for each water treatment, leading to an estimate of 66–86 % increase of drought intensity for the dry treatment compared to the control. Comparing actual and expected plant water budget from simulations in the dry plots allowed to identify and quantify the impact of methodological issues related to rainfall interception experiments as side effects for intrusive rain drops and subsurface lateral water flow.

Abstract:Sap flux density in branches, leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance and leaf water potentials were measured in 16-year-old Quercus suber L. trees growing in a plantation in southern Portugal to understand how evergreen Mediterranean trees regulate water loss during summer drought. Leaf specific hydraulic conductance and leaf gas exchange were monitored during the progressive summer drought to establish how changes along the hydraulic pathway influence shoot responses. As soil water became limiting, leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and leaf transpiration declined significantly. Predawn leaf water potential reflected soil water potential measured at 1-m depth in the rhizospheres of most trees. The lowest predawn leaf water potential recorded during this period was -1.8 MPa. Mean maximum stomatal conductance declined from 300 to 50 mmol m(-2) s(-1), reducing transpiration from 6 to 2 mmol m(-2) s(-1). Changes in leaf gas exchange were attributed to reduced soil water availability, increased resistances along the hydraulic pathway and, hence, reduced leaf water supply. There was a strong coupling between changes in soil water content and stomatal conductance as well as between stomatal conductance and leaf specific hydraulic conductance. Despite significant seasonal differences among trees in predawn leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, leaf transpiration and leaf specific hydraulic conductance, there were no differences in midday leaf water potentials. The strong regulation of changes in leaf water potential in Q. suber both diurnally and seasonally is achieved through stomatal closure, which is sensitive to changes in both liquid and vapor phase conductance. This sensitivity allows for optimization of carbon and water resource use without compromising the root-shoot hydraulic link.

Abstract:The xylem is a complex system that includes a network of dead conduits ensuring long-distance water transport in plants. Under ongoing climate changes, xylem embolism is a major and recurrent cause of drought-induced tree mortality. Non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) play key roles in plant responses to drought and frost stress, and several studies putatively suggest their involvement in the regulation of xylem water transport. However, a clear picture on the roles of NSCs in plant hydraulics has not been drawn to date. We summarize the current knowledge on the involvement of NSCs during embolism formation and subsequent hydraulic recovery. Under drought, sugars are generally accumulated in xylem parenchyma and in xylem sap. At drought-relief, xylem functionality is putatively restored in an osmotically driven process involving wood parenchyma, xylem sap and phloem compartments. By analyzing the published data on stem hydraulics and NSC contents under drought/frost stress and subsequent stress relief, we found that embolism build-up positively correlated to stem NSC depletion, and that the magnitude of post-stress hydraulic recovery positively correlated to consumption of soluble sugars. These findings suggest a close relationship between hydraulics and carbohydrate dynamics. We call for more experiments on hydraulic and NSC dynamics in controlled and field conditions.

Abstract:Stable hydraulic conductivity in forest trees maintains healthy tree crowns and contributes to productivity in forest ecosystems. Drought conditions break down this relationship, but the mechanisms are poorly known and may depend on drought severity. To increase the understanding of changes in hydraulic conductivity during drought, we determined hydraulic parameters in Populus euphratica Oliv. (P. euphratica) in naturally arid conditions and in a simulated severe drought using a high-pressure flow meter. The results showed that leaf-specific hydraulic conductance (LSC) of leaf blades was less variable in mild drought, and increased significantly in severe drought. Plants attempted to maintain stability in leaf blade LSC under moderate water stress. In extreme drought, LSC was enhanced by increasing hydraulic conductance in plant parts with less hydraulic limitation, decreasing it in other parts, and decreasing leaf area; this mechanism protected the integrity of water transport in portions of tree crowns, and induced scorched branches and partial mortality in other parts of crowns. We conclude that limitation in water supply and elastic regulation of hydraulic characteristics may drive the mortality of tree branches as a result of severe drought. Evaluation of adaptive water transport capacity in riparian plants in arid areas provides a scientific basis for riparian forest restoration.

Abstract:The hydraulic traits of plants, or the efficiency of water transport throughout the plant hydraulic system, could help to anticipate the impact of climate change and improve crop productivity. However, the mechanisms explaining the role of hydraulic traits on plant photosynthesis and thus, plant growth and yield, are just beginning to emerge. We conducted an experiment to identify differences in growth patterns at leaf, root and whole plant level among four wild olive genotypes and to determine whether hydraulic traits may help to explain such differences through their effect on photosynthesis. We estimated the relative growth rate (RGR), and its components, leaf gas exchange and hydraulic traits both at the leaf and whole-plant level in the olive genotypes over a full year. Photosynthetic capacity parameters were also measured. We observed different responses to water stress in the RGRs of the genotypes studied being best explained by changes in the net CO2 assimilation rate (NAR). Further, net photosynthesis, closely related to NAR, was mainly determined by hydraulic traits, both at leaf and whole-plant levels. This was mediated through the effects of hydraulic traits on stomatal conductance. We observed a decrease in leaf area: sapwood area and leaf area: root area ratios in water-stressed plants, which was more evident in the olive genotype Olea europaea subsp. guanchica (GUA8), whose RGR was less affected by water deficit than the other olive genotypes. In addition, at the leaf level, GUA8 water-stressed plants presented a better photosynthetic capacity due to a higher mesophyll conductance to CO2 and a higher foliar N. We conclude that hydraulic allometry adjustments of whole plant and leaf physiological response were well coordinated, buffering the water stress experienced by GUA8 plants. In turn, this explained their higher relative growth rates compared to the rest of the genotypes under water-stress conditions.

Abstract:Functional traits are essential for predicting plant responses to environmental changes, yet understanding within-species trait variability is complex due to multiple influencing factors. Long-lived trees, like the holm oak ( Quercus ilex L.), are expected to respond to abiotic variations largely through phenotypic plasticity, so a better understanding of these plastic responses is key to managing climate change impacts on forests. To investigate intra-specific variations in ecophysiological performance under dry Mediterranean conditions, we measured isotopic, nutrient, and growth traits in 240 four-year-old holm oaks from various populations and mother trees grown in a common garden experiment. Contrary to expectations, we found little ecotypic differentiation in isotopic, nutrient, or growth traits among geographically distant populations with contrasting climates, elevations, and lithologies. Leaf Δ18O enrichment and δ 13 C values ranged widely across and within populations, indicating large variability in time-integrated stomatal conductance and water-use efficiency among neighboring oaks grown under the same dry conditions. Both Δ18O enrichment and δ 13 C exhibited negative relationships with leaf C/P and C/K ratios, revealing a trade-off between water-use efficiency and nutrient-use efficiency that was primarily driven by changes in stomatal regulation stringency depending on leaf nutrient status. Holm oaks from all populations were capable of fine-tuning their leaf gas exchange to prioritize efficient use of the most limiting resource for photosynthesis and growth (water versus nutrients). Phosphorus deficiency and stoichiometric N/P imbalance led to lower water-use efficiency and poorer growth. We conclude that all studied holm oak populations possess sufficient phenotypic plasticity and/or genetic diversity to withstand heat and drought stress intensification through adaptive adjustments of their physiological and nutrient traits. Nonetheless, phosphorus fertilization could greatly enhance forest restoration success amid increasing climatic aridity and human-driven N/P imbalance. These findings hold important implications for a better understanding of holm oaks persistence under rapid climate warming and aridification across the Mediterranean region.

Abstract:Abstract Key message A new process-based model, SurEau , is described. It predicts the risk of xylem hydraulic failure under drought. Context The increase in drought intensity due to climate change will accentuate the risk of tree mortality. But very few process-based models are currently able to predict this mortality risk. Aims We describe the operating principle of a new mechanistic model SurEau that computes the water balance, water relations, and hydraulics of a plant under extreme drought. Methods SurEau is based on the formalization of key physiological processes of plant response to water stress. The hydraulic and hydric functioning of the plant is at the core of this model, which focuses on both water flows (i.e., hydraulic) and water pools (i.e., hydric) using variable hydraulic conductances. The model considers the elementary flow of water from the soil to the atmosphere through different plant organs that are described by their symplasmic and apoplasmic compartments. For each organ, the symplasm is described by a pressure-volume curve and the apoplasm by its vulnerability curve to cavitation. The model is evaluated on mature oak trees exposed to water stress. Results On the tested oak trees, the model captures well the observed soil water balance, water relations, and level of embolism. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the level of embolism is strongly determined by air VPD and key physiological traits such as cuticular transpiration, resistance to cavitation, and leaf area. Conclusion The process-based SurEau model offers new opportunities to evaluate how different species or genotypes will respond to future climatic conditions.

Abstract:Mixing oak and pine trees enhances hydraulic impairments of all species, although diversity can mitigate drought stress during extended drought periods. Increasing tree species diversity in Mediterranean forests could reduce drought‐induced hydraulic impairments through improved microclimate and reduced competition for water. However, it remains unclear if and how species diversity modulates tree hydraulic functions and how impacts may shift during the growing season. Using unmanaged Mediterranean forest stands composed of one (i.e., monospecific) or four (i.e., multispecific) tree species, we examined the seasonal dynamics of in‐situ hydraulic traits (predawn and midday leaf water potential – Ψpd and Ψmd, xylem‐ and leaf‐specific hydraulic conductivity – KS and KL, percentage loss of conductivity – PLC, specific leaf area – SLA, and Huber value – HV) in four co‐existing Pinus and Quercus species over two years. We mainly observed adverse impacts of species diversity with lower Ψpd, Ψmd, KS, KL, and higher PLC in multispecific compared to monospecific stands, especially for the two pines. These impacts were observed all along the growing season but were stronger during the driest periods of the summer. Beneficial impacts of diversity were rare and only occured for oaks (Q. faginea) after prolonged and intense water stress. Our findings reveal that mixing oaks and pines could mainly enhance hydraulic impairments for all species during the dry season, suggesting a potential decline in mixed Mediterranean forests under future climate.
