Abstract:Nonaqueous lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries are regarded as a promising electrochemical energy storage technology because of largely defeating commercial Li‐ion batteries on theoretical energy density. However, due to the electrically insulating property of Li2O2, a typical discharge product in Li–O2 batteries, high overpotential is inevitable upon charge. Nonetheless, catalysts could regulate the electrochemical formation pathways of Li2O2, and its morphology is closely bound with the energy required to dissociate. Meanwhile, in addition to Li2O2, alternative discharge products with inherently low dissociation energy can be produced by specific catalysts. Here, fundamental oxygen reduction routes in Li–O2 batteries are focused on, catalyst‐dependent geometry formation of Li2O2 is presented, and geometry‐related charge kinetics are disscussed. Products formed under specific catalysts are further explored with an emphasis on LiO2. Future directions to in situ study the electrocatalytic mechanism are subsequently proposed, and an energy system design based on oxygen redox reactions is conceived to provide new perspectives for future electrochemical energy technologies.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have great potential for applications in electric devices and vehicles due to their high theoretical energy density of 3500 Wh kg-1. Unfortunately, their practical use is seriously limited by the sluggish decomposition of insulating Li2O2, leading to high OER overpotentials and the decomposition of cathodes and electrolytes. Cathode electrocatalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities are critical to alleviate high charge overpotentials and promote cycling stability in Li-O2 batteries. However, constructing catalysts for high OER performance and energy efficiency is always challenging. In this mini-review, we first outline the employment of advanced electrocatalysts such as carbon materials, noble and non-noble metals, and metal-organic frameworks to improve battery performance. We then detail the ORR and OER mechanisms of photo-assisted electrocatalysts and single-atom catalysts for superior Li-O2 battery performance. Finally, we offer perspectives on future development directions for cathode electrocatalysts that will boost the OER kinetics.
Systematic study on the discharge product of Pt-based lithium oxygen batteries

Abstract:Lithium oxygen batteries have attracted much attention due to the high theoretical energy density. However, they suffer a large overpotential during oxygen evolution process and thus catalysts play a vital role in the reaction. Here, we systematically explored the influence of Pt-based nanoparticle catalysts on the discharge product Li2O2. Because of the superior electrical conductivity and the strong binding with oxygen, Pt-based nanoparticles serve as active sites which are favorable for the growth of toroidal Li2O2. We also found that the content and composition of Pt-based nanoparticle catalysts exert a significant influence on the electrochemical performance of lithium oxygen batteries. The discharge products are composed of crystalline Li2O2 and oxygen-rich LiO2 characterized by high-energy X-ray diffraction and Raman. Atomic force microscopy further provides detailed information of the particle size and surface roughness. The loading of Pt catalysts determines the phase and size of Li2O2 on the discharged electrode surface. This study will be beneficial for the optimization of Pt-based catalysts used in non-aqueous lithium oxygen batteries.

Abstract:Li-CO2 batteries with dual efficacy for greenhouse gas CO2 sequestration and high energy output have been regarded as a promising electrochemical energy storage technology. However, battery feasibility has been hampered by inferior electrochemical performance due to large overpotentials and low cyclability primarily caused by the difficult decomposition of ultra-stable Li2CO3 during charge. The use of cathode catalysts has been highlighted as a promising solution and catalyst properties, as well as the nature of discharge products, are closely correlated with electrochemical performance. Here, the catalyst design strategies that include active site enrichment, electrical transport enhancement, and mass transfer improvement are summarized. Catalyst effects on product decomposition are then subsequently introduced, while product geometry and chemical composition will be explored, with an emphasis on the formation/decomposition of Li2C2O4 instead of Li2CO3. Building on previous research, future directions that facilitate improvements in catalyst design are put forward to reinforce the fundamental development of Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable aprotic lithium (Li)-O2 batteries with high theoretical energy densities are regarded as promising next-generation energy storage devices and have attracted considerable interest recently. However, these batteries still suffer from many critical issues, such as low capacity, poor cycle life, and low round-trip efficiency, rendering the practical application of these batteries rather sluggish. Cathode catalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and evolution reaction activities are of particular importance for addressing these issues and consequently promoting the application of Li-O2 batteries. Thus, the rational design and preparation of the catalysts with high ORR activity, good electronic conductivity, and decent chemical/electrochemical stability are still challenging. In this Review, the strategies are outlined including the rational selection of catalytic species, the introduction of a 3D porous structure, the formation of functional composites, and the heteroatom doping which succeeded in the design of high-performance cathode catalysts for stable Li-O2 batteries. Perspectives on enhancing the overall electrochemical performance of Li-O2 batteries based on the optimization of the properties and reliability of each part of the battery are also made. This Review sheds some new light on the design of highly active cathode catalysts and the development of high-performance lithium-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries, noted for their high discharge voltage of approximately 2.8 V and substantial theoretical specific energy of 1876 Wh kg-1, represent a promising avenue for new energy sources and CO2 emission reduction. However, the practical application of these batteries faces significant hurdles, particularly at high current densities and over extended cycle lives, due to their complex reaction mechanisms and slow kinetics. This paper delves into the recent advancements in cathode catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries, with a specific focus on the designing philosophy from composition, geometry, and homogeneity of the catalysts to the proper test conditions and real-world application. It surveys the possible catalytic mechanisms, giving readers a brief introduction of how the energy is stored and released as well as the critical exploration of the relationship between material properties and performances. Specifically, optimization and standardization of test conditions for Li-CO2 battery research is highlighted to enhance data comparability, which is also critical to facilitate the practical application of Li-CO2 batteries. This review aims to bring up inspiration from previous work to advance the design of more effective and sustainable cathode catalysts, tailored to meet the practical demands of Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Limited by the energy density and stability of currently developed Li-ion battery, there are eager demands for high energy density of electrochemical energy storage devices. Among various candidates, Li-O2 battery has been recognized as one type of the next generation lithium battery to achieve the energy density goal of 350-500 Wh kg−1 due to its extremely high theoretical energy density. However, there are gaps in terms of achievable energy density, rate-capability and cycling performance with respect to practical applications. One of the main reasons is the sluggish reaction kinetics of oxygen electrochemistry at the cathode caused by the insolubility and insulation of the discharge product Li2O2. Considering the advantage of mobility in Li-O2 battery over general solid catalysts, soluble catalytic redox mediators have been introduced into aprotic Li-O2 battery to facilitate the kinetics of both oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction on the cathode and extensively investigated. In this paper, recent progress on the application of soluble catalytic redox mediators in non-aqueous Li-O2 battery is systematically reviewed with focus on the underpinning chemical and electrochemical reaction mechanisms, after a brief discussion on the electrolyte solvent which plays a crucial role on the battery performance. The challenges and future opportunities of Li-O2 battery containing soluble catalytic redox mediators are also summarized and analyzed in this paper.

Surface Engineering Donor and Acceptor Sites with Enhanced Charge Transport for Low-Overpotential Lithium–oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Inferior charge transport in discharge products is one of the main factors restricting the technological potential of lithium-oxygen batteries. Here, we propose a strategy to enhance charge transport in discharge products by surface engineering of cathode catalysts with donor and acceptor sites to improve solid-solid interfacial electron transfer properties between catalysts and discharge products. Free-standing layered double oxides loaded with pyrolyzed sodium poly(aminobenzenesulfonate)-derived sulfur-doped carbon nanosheets and carbon nanosheets with sulfoxide groups are synthesized and utilized to investigate donor and acceptor sites effect on the performance of lithium-oxygen batteries. The free-standing cathode with hybrid donor and acceptor sites is capable of operation in oxygen with distinct (dis)charge plateau and superior cycling stability (over 60 cycles at a fixed capacity of 0.53 mAh cm−2). The superior properties are attributed to the enhanced charge transport in lithium peroxide by the formation of hole polarons/Li+ vacancies on acceptor sites and electron polarons/disordered lithium peroxide phase on donor sites. This work provides a promising route to enhance defective charge transport in discharge products by optimization of donor and acceptor sites on cathode catalysts for high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries.
Heterogeneous Catalyst as a Functional Substrate Governing the Shape of Electrochemical Precipitates in Oxygen-Fueled Rechargeable Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries have the potential to become the most eminent solution for future energy storage with their theoretical energy density exceeding all existing batteries. However, the insulating and insoluble discharge product (lithium peroxide; Li2O2) impairs practical application. Conventional catalyst designs based on the electronic structure and interfacial charge transfer descriptors have not been able to overcome these limitations due to Li2O2. Herein, we revisit the role of heterogeneous catalysts as substrates to regulate Li2O2 growth and the formation of solid/solid reaction interfaces. We demonstrate that controlled solid/solid interfacial structure design is a critical performance parameter beyond the inherent electronic structure. In particular, the Cu2O substrate in this study induces a homogeneous deposition of Pd atoms, which leads to well-controlled growth of Li2O2 resolving mass and charge transport limits (i.e., the bottleneck of oxygen reduction/evolution reactions), thus improving reversibility, capacity, and durability of the cells by dissipating electrochemical and mechanical stress. We thus verified the essential role of solid/solid interfaces to regulate the nucleation and growth process of Li2O2 in lithium-oxygen batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-air batteries possess a high theoretical energy density among the current battery technologies, and are expected to become the driving power for electric vehicles. However, the practical application of lithium air batteries is handicapped by their poor cycle life, high over-charge potential and low energy efficiency. Numerous studies have performed to improve the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction. Making a good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst system is under intense scrutiny. In this work, we report a rational design of air electrode, which derives from biomass and presents a three-dimensional porous carbon architecture with high specific surface and large volume expansion coefficient. Combining with a soluble catalyst, this oxygen electrode presents an ultrahigh areal specific capacity of 7.95 mAh/cm(2) and a long cycling life up to 1000 cycles with suppressed polarization (about 0.46 V). The greatly improved overall performance is due to the synergetic effect of the novel designed oxygen electrode capable of mediating the redox mediators to trigger the ORR and OER process.
Localized surface plasmon resonance enhanced electrochemical kinetics and product selectivity in aprotic Li–O2 batteries

Abstract:Lithium–oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have the potential needed for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles, but the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes hinder the practical implementation. Here, we propose that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) induced the plasmonic thermal and hot electron effects can simultaneously enhance reaction kinetics of ORR, OER, reduce the reaction activation energy and promote the discharge product selectivity to mitigate unfavourable side reactions, which greatly improves the catalytic performance of Ag NPs. Furthermore, we also calculated the photochemical conversion coefficient and the quantitative contribution of the ratio of two effects towards the catalytic activity. Notably, by accelerating both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, the discharge voltage is significantly increased to 3.2174 V, which is surpass the thermodynamic limit of 2.96 V, and the charge voltage is reduced to 3.2487 V (overpotential of 0.0331 V), resulting in a high round-trip efficiency of 99%. The concept can be extended to other types of batteries, such as Zn-air battery, thus contributing to the development of advanced energy storage systems.

A Comparison of Acausal and Causal FIR Filtration Effects on Seismic Waveform Data

Abstract:Since the installation of the original BDSN Quanterra data loggers in the early 1990's, acausal FIR filter chains have been used to maintain consistency in the data acquisition systems as the BDSN surface-sited station network expanded and Quanterra data loggers evolved from the original Q680's to newer generations. Owing partly to the cooperative USGS Menlo Park/UCB REDI Project (Gee et al., 1996) with hypocenter locations provided by the USGS Menlo Park and partly to numerous BSL researchers interests involving predominantly the use of lower frequency (1 Hz and lower) seismic waveform data, the effects of acausal FIR filtration were not an impediment to progress. The relatively high crustal seismic wave attenuation in coastal California combined with the strong scattering/attenuation effects of the weathered layer tends to obscure the acausal FIR filter effects when picking phase onset times and first motions from the higher frequency (80+ Hz) seismic waveform data. Now, however, as more emphasis is being placed on robust manual and automated picking of seismic phase onset times and first motions, the acausal FIR filter effects are a significant impediment and we have decided to change the 100 Hz seismic data streams (on which the phase picking is done) from acausal to causal FIR filtration effective July 1, 2003. Switching from acausal to causal 100 sps FIR filtration will result in systematic changes to the resulting seismic waveforms which can impact the utility of seismic pattern recognition and other algorithms to compare events recorded before with those recorded after the acausal to causal 100 sps FIR filtration changeover date. This note describes and shows by example the differences in the acausal and causal FIR filters and their effects on the seismic waveforms.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are considered as the next generation for energy storages systems due to the higher theoretical energy density than that of Li-ion batteries. However, the high charge overpotential caused by the insulated Li2O2 results in low energy efficiency, side reaction from electrolyte and cathode, and therefore poor battery performance. Designing noble metal-based catalysts can be an effective strategy to develop high-performance Li-O2 batteries with low charge overpotentials and outstanding cycle stability. However, the charge mechanism for noble metal-based catalysts is not clear and even contradictory. Herein, several charge mechanisms of Li2O2 are first discussed. Subsequently, the possible charge processes of Li-O2 batteries with noble metal-based catalysts are illustrated. In addition, the future development for noble metal-based catalysts is outlined.

Operando Liquid Cell Electron Microscopy of Discharge and Charge Kinetics in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Despite the promising future of lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) battery in replacing conventional lithium ion battery for high-energy applications, the complicated reaction mechanisms determining the sluggish discharge-charge kinetics have not been fully understood. Here, utilizing in situ liquid transmission electron microscopy, the (electro) chemical fundamentals in a working Li-O-2 battery is explored. During discharge, the nucleation of Li2O2 is observed at the carbon electrode/electrolyte interface, and the following growth process exhibits Li+ diffusion-limited kinetics. Nucleation and growth of Li2O2 are also observed within the electrolyte, where there is no direct contact with the carbon electrode indicating the existence of non-Faradaic disproportionation reaction of intermediate LiO2 into Li2O2. The growth of Li2O2 isolated in the electrolyte exhibits O-2(-) diffusion-limited kinetics. Li2O2 at the carbon electrode surface and isolated in the electrolyte are both active upon charging and gradually decomposed. For Li2O2 particles rooted at the carbon electrode surface, the decomposition starts at the electrode/Li2O2 interface indicating electron-conduction limited charge kinetics. For Li2O2 isolated within the electrolyte, surprisingly, a side-to-side decomposition mode is identified indicating the non-Faradaic formation of dissolvable O-2(-), whose diffusion in the electrolyte controls the overall charge kinetics. This work reveals further details of underlying mechanisms in a working Li-O-2 battery and identifies various limiting factors controlling the discharge and charge processes.
A New Design Strategy for Observing Lithium Oxide Growth-Evolution Interactions Using Geometric Catalyst Positioning

Abstract:Understanding the catalyzed formation and evolution of lithium-oxide products in Li-O2 batteries is central to the development of next-generation energy storage technology. Catalytic sites, while effective in lowering reaction barriers, often become deactivated when placed on the surface of an oxygen electrode due to passivation by solid products. Here we investigate a mechanism for alleviating catalyst deactivation by dispersing Pd catalytic sites away from the oxygen electrode surface in a well-structured anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) porous membrane interlayer. We observe the cross-sectional product growth and evolution in Li-O2 cells by characterizing products that grow from the electrode surface. Morphological and structural details of the products in both catalyzed and uncatalyzed cells are investigated independently from the influence of the oxygen electrode. We find that the geometric decoration of catalysts far from the conductive electrode surface significantly improves the reaction reversibility by chemically facilitating the oxidation reaction through local coordination with PdO surfaces. The influence of the catalyst position on product composition is further verified by ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy in addition to morphological studies.

Abstract:Energy storage challenges have triggered growing interest in various battery technologies and electrocatalysis. As a particularly promising variety, the Li–O2 battery with an extremely high energy density is of great significance, offering tremendous opportunities to improve cell performance via understanding catalytic mechanisms and the exploration of new materials. Furthermore, focus on nonaqueous electrolyte‐based Li–O2 batteries has markedly intensified since there could be a higher probability of commercialization, compared to that of solid‐state or aqueous electrolytes. The recent advancements of the nonaqueous Li–O2 battery in terms of fundamental understanding and material challenges, including electrolyte stability, water effect, and noncarbon cathode materials are summarized in this review. Further, the current status of water impact on discharge products, possible mechanisms, and parasitic reactions in nonaqueous electrolytes are reviewed for the first time. The key challenges of noncarbon oxygen electrode materials, such as noble metals and metal oxides‐based cathodes, transition metals, transition metal compounds (carbides, oxides) based cathodes as well as noncarbon supported catalysts are discussed. This review concludes with a perspective on future research directions for nonaqueous Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:As modern society continues to advance, the depletion of non-renewable energy sources (such as natural gas and petroleum) exacerbates environmental and energy issues. The development of green, environmentally friendly energy storage and conversion systems is imperative. The energy density of commercial lithium-ion batteries is approaching its theoretical limit, and even so, it struggles to meet the rapidly growing market demand. Lithium–oxygen batteries have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their exceptionally high theoretical energy density. However, challenges such as poor electrolyte stability, short cycle life, low discharge capacity, and high overpotential arise from the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) during discharge and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during charging. This article elucidates the fundamental principles of lithium–oxygen batteries, analyzes the primary issues currently faced, and summarizes recent research advancements in air cathodes and anodes. Additionally, it proposes future directions and efforts for the development of lithium–air batteries.

Abstract:The practical application of lithium-ion batteries suffers from low energy density and the struggle to satisfy the ever-growing requirements of the energy-storage Internet. Therefore, developing next-generation electrode materials with high energy density is of the utmost significance. There are high expectations with respect to the development of lattice oxygen redox (LOR)—a promising strategy for developing cathode materials as it renders nearly a doubling of the specific capacity. However, challenges have been put forward toward the deep-seated origins of the LOR reaction and if its whole potential could be effectively realized in practical application. In the following Review, the intrinsic science that induces the LOR activity and crystal structure evolution are extensively discussed. Moreover, a variety of characterization techniques for investigating these behaviors are presented. Furthermore, we have highlighted the practical restrictions and outlined the probable approaches of Li-based layered oxide cathodes for improving such materials to meet the practical applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Oxygen-Based Anion Redox for Lithium Batteries

Abstract:ConspectusThe importance of current Li-ion batteries (LIBs) in modern society cannot be overstated. While the energy demands of devices increase, the corresponding enhancements in energy density of battery technologies are highly sought after. Currently, many different battery concepts, such as Li-S and metal-air among many others, have been investigated. However, their practical implementation has mostly been restricted to the prototyping stage. In fact, most of these technologies require rework of existing Li-ion battery manufacturing facilities and will naturally incur resistance to change from industry. For this reason, one specifically attractive technology, anionic redox in transition metal oxides, has gained much attention in the recent years. Its ability to be directly used in already established processes and higher energy density with similar electrolyte formulation make it a key materials research direction for next generation Li-ion batteries. In regular LIBs, the redox active centers are the transition metal cation. In anion redox, both the anion (typically O) and the transition metal cation are utilized as redox centers with enormous implications for increasing energy density. This new material can be highly competitive for replacing the current LIB technologies. However, much is still unknown about its cycling mechanism. Upon activating the O redox couples, most cationic and anionic redox active materials will either evolve O2 or undergo irreversible structural degradation with associated severe decreases in electrochemical performance. By understanding the transition from full anion redox to partial cationic and anionic redox, we hope readers can gain a deeper understanding of the topic.This Account will focus mainly on the work that was conducted by our group at Argonne National Laboratory. The phenomenon of cationic and anionic redox in a lithium-ion battery cathode will first be discussed. Our work in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to investigate the spectroscopic features of O after delithiation has found potential "fingerprint" signals that could likely be used to identify and confirm reversible O redox if corroborated with other techniques. To follow, we will examine our work on Li-O2 batteries. While our group and the research community have had many significant contributions and improvements to the field of Li-O2 (such as decreasing overpotential and achieving cyclability in air environment), its practical application is still far from realization. Perhaps our most important contribution to this area is the discovery that Ir deposited on reduced graphene oxide can be used to halt the reduction of O2 at the LiO2 oxidation state. This not only significantly decreases the charge overpotential but also presents the important concept of oxidation-state controlled discharge. Subsequently, we will focus on our oxidation state-controlled redox-based charging of oxygen in a pure oxygen redox Li-ion battery. Future implications of this technology will be emphasized.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery is a potential candidate to be next-generation commercial battery due to high theoretical capacity and energy density among the various rechargeable batteries. However, there are still some obstacles that hindering its commercial application due to the unsatisfactory practical electrochemical performance, including low discharge capacity, poor rate capability, high overpotential, and unstable cycle lifespan, etc. Rational design of cathode materials is demonstrated to be an efficient route to greatly ameliorate the aforementioned existential issues of Li-O2 battery system. Herein, the recent advances in the design and preparation of cathode materials for Li-O2 batteries were summarized in this review. The basic principles and comprehending of reaction mechanism for Li-O2 batteries were proposed in the first part. The following part introduced the latest research and development of the component design of cathode, including carbon-based materials, noble metals, transition metals and their compounds, bimetallic oxides, redox mediators, and photo-assisted catalysts. Then, the structure‐property relationship with different dimensions was covered. In addition, attempts to improve the electrochemical properties of Li-O2 batteries electrode materials via surface engineering, containing heterojunction construction, vacancy regulation, and optimization of exposed crystal planes were discussed. Eventually, a brief conclusion about the challenging and existing problems for Li-O2 batteries was proposed and some perspective related to the development direction were put out. This work will motivate the preparation of oxygen electrodes with stability and efficient catalytic activity for high performance Li-O2 batteries, aims to promote the commercial application of rechargeable Li-O2 energy storages.Graphical abstractThis minireview summarizes the latest research and development of the component design of cathode and their improved strategy, promoting the commercial application of rechargeable Li-O2 energy storages.
