Abstract:Leukaemias are neoplastic proliferations of haemopoietic cells which affect both children and adults and remain one of the leading causes of death around the world. Early diagnosis and classification of such malignant disorders are necessary, and it has always been a challenge in the field of haematology and laboratory medicine. Accurate and authentic diagnosis of leukaemia is essential for the confirmation of the disease, prognostic classification and effective treatment planning. Visual microscopic examination of blood slides is considered as an indispensable diagnostic technique for the screening and classification of leukaemia across continents. However, manual investigation is often slow and limited by subjective assimilation and reduced diagnostic precision. In this study, we investigate the use of image morphometry and pattern recognition techniques for subtyping leukaemic lymphoblasts as per French–American–British classification. Reliable classification results were obtained using the robust segmentation methodology, prominent morphological features and an ensemble of classifiers. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, a comparative study is realised over the available image data-set. The classification rates achieved with the standard classifiers, that is naive Bayesian, K-nearest neighbor, multilayer perceptron, probabilistic neural network and support vector machines, were compared with that obtained using an ensemble of classifiers. It is observed that the classification rate is improved with the use of multiple classifier ensemble and is expected to assist clinicians in making the diagnostic process faster and more accurate.
Morphometric Variations of the Foramen Lacerum in Dry Skulls and Its Clinical Significance: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Introduction: The foramen lacerum is located in the middle cranial fossa and transmits a number of nerves and blood vessels. Occlusion can result in the compression of the neurovascular bundle, and the foramen has been reported to be involved in the spread of tumours into the cranium. Aim: The aims of the present study was to describe the morphology of the foramen lacerum and to compare the anatomical parameters on the left and right sides of the skull. Also, the significance of the anatomical parameters in male versus female skulls and right side versus left side of the skull where studied. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in May and June 2023 using 62 dry skulls (124 foramen lacerum) available in the Department of Anatomy at Gautam Buddha Chikitsa Mahavidyalay, a tertiary care teaching institute in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. The anatomical parameters, including the Anteroposterior (AP) and transverse diameters, were recorded using a calibrated digital Vernier caliper. The shape of the foramen was also observed. The mean and standard deviation of the recorded parameters were obtained. Results: Out of the 62 skulls, 41 were males and 21 were females, resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 1.8:1. The mean AP diameter on the Right Side (RT) and Left Side (LT) in males was 6.26 mm and 6.24 mm, respectively, while in females, the mean diameter was 4.97 mm (RT) and 5.4 mm (LT). The mean transverse diameter recorded in the present study was 6.14 mm (RT) and 6.2 mm (LT) in males, while in females, this measurement was 5.88 mm on both sides. The most common shape of the foramen lacerum observed in the study was bilaterally round, in both males and females. Conclusion: There are morphological differences in the AP diameter between male and female skulls, with males having a larger AP diameter on their right side and females having larger AP diameter on their right side. The overall size of the foramen lacerum was smaller in the present study, indicating a higher likelihood of neurovascular bundle compression with age. The recent advances in skull base surgery warrant further and larger studies on this neglected yet important foramen to gather more data on its morphometric variations in different geographical regions.

Abstract:Introduction Information concerning the anatomy of the physiological foramen is still limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the distance between the physiological and anatomical apex, the shape and diameter of the physiological foramen in maxillary (Mx) and mandibular premolars (Mn). Methods The anatomy of the apex of 229 maxillary (first: MxP1; second: MxP2) and 221 mandibular premolars (first: MnP1; second: MnP2) from a mixed Swiss-German population was investigated by means of micro-computed tomography and 3D software-imaging. Results The following results was obtained in the presence of a main physiological foramen: a. The distance between the physiological and anatomical foramen were 0.29-0.99 mm (MxP1), 0.21-1.03 mm (MxP2), 0.13-0.8 (MnP1 ), and 0.15-1.41 (MnP2) b. The mean narrow and wide diameter s of the physiological foramen were 0.19-0.33 mm (MxP1), 0.25-0.42 mm (MxP2), 0.28-0.37 (MnP1) , and 0.28-0.40 (MnP2) c. The most common physiological foramen shape was oval (66.7% MxP1, 89.7% MxP2, 91.8% MnP1, 64.4% MnP2) Conclusion Considering the recommended preparation sizes based on a size corresponding to the friction, i.e. at the narrowest point in the area of the apical constriction (physiological foramen), and within the limitations of this ex vivo micro-CT study, a final preparation size could be chosen when considering the pertaining morphological considerations; yet, to a minimum ISO 30 size.

Gender determination using mandibular intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of right mandibular molar

Abstract:Background: Forensic odontology plays an important role in mass disasters, house fires, criminal deaths, identification of missing persons, and child abuse cases. Teeth are the most stable part of the human body and are resistant to thermal, mechanical, and chemical insults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mandibular intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of mandibular first molar in gender determination. Materials and methods: The study comprised 100 participants (50 males and 50 females) in the age group of 18-23 years. The mandibular impressions were made, and casts were prepared using dental stone. The intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of the right mandibular first molar were measured using digital vernier callipers. The data obtained was statistically analysed using SPSS software version 23. Results: The mean mandibular intercanine distance was found to be 27.2 ± 2.3 in males and 25.94 ± 1.76 in females (P = 0.03). There was no statistical difference in the mesiodistal width of the mandibular molar between males and females (P = 0.166). However, the mean mesiodistal width of males was higher when compared to females. Conclusion: Males have a greater intercanine width and mesiodistal dimension when compared to females. This result will be helpful in forensic medicine, anthropology, orthodontic treatments, and clinical dentistry.
The location of mandibular foramen relative to the occlusal plane: a study on anatolian dry mandible

Abstract:Purpose: The study aims to evaluate the location of mandibular foramen (MF) with respect to the occlusal plane (OP) and its location on the ramus using Anatolian dry mandibles.Materials and methods: A total of 115 dry mandibles with mandibular molars were analyzed. The distance between the MF and the OP was examined with a flat metal plate. Group A was above the OP; group L was at level, and group B was below the OP. The distances between the MF and anterior border (A-MF), sigmoid notch (U-MF), posterior border (P-MF), and lower border (L-MF) were measured. The symmetry between the two sides was examined. Pearson chi-square and Student's t-test were performed for statistical analysis.Results: According to the analysis, 50.23% of MF was located below the OP (p<0.05). The mean distances of Groups A and B were 3.45 and 4.78 mm, respectively. There was no difference between the left and right in groups (p>0.05). The distance A-MF was 14.71 mm. There was no statistical difference between the distances A-MF and P-MF or U-MF and L-MF.Conclusion: Half of the MF (50.23%) was located below the occlusal plane with a mean distance of 4.78 mm. It may be helpful to place the needle 3-4 mm above the OP and 1.5-2 mm back of the anterior border to obtain a successful inferior alveolar nerve block. The MF was located at the center of the medial surface of the ramus.
Evaluation of Mental Foramen and Mandibular Canal Course and Location in an Emirati Subpopulation

Abstract:Introduction and aims: Violations of the mandibular canal (MC) and mental foramen (MF) and subsequent injuries to their neurovascular bundle have been reported after surgical and nonsurgical dental procedures. Besides using advanced technologies such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), clinicians should be aware of the anatomy and location of MC and MF in different populations. This study aims to describe the morphologic characteristics of the MF, MC, and its intrabony location in relation to the apices of mandibular posterior teeth in an Emirati subpopulation using CBCT. Methods: A total of 3700 CBCT scans were screened, and 154 scans that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly selected. The scans were assessed using 3-dimensional multiplanar imaging for the following structures: the location of MF and the MC course, its intrabony location, and its relationship to the apices of the mandibular posterior teeth. The data were analysed statistically using SPSS software. Results: The MC ran lingually and inferiorly at the posterior region and became more buccal and superior towards the MF. The distal root of the mandibular second molar was found to be the closest root to the MC (2.06 ± 1.83 mm). Moreover, the most common location of the MF was distal to the contact area between the 2 premolars (0.83 ± 1.84 mm) with a significant negative correlation to age (with and increase in age, the MF moves distally). The distance between the root apices and the MC was statistically significantly affected by age (positive correlation) and gender (male patients had a greater distance). Conclusions: The common course of the MC is lingual and inferior posteriorly and becomes more buccal and superior towards the MF, which is located mostly between the mandibular first and second premolars. Furthermore, the distal root of the mandibular second molar is the closest to the MC and has a positive relationship with age.

Abstract:ObjectivesThe objective of the present study was to evaluate the anatomical relationship between mental foramen (MF), including the incidence of the anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve (AL), and roots of mandibular teeth in relation to risk of nerve injury with endodontic treatment.Materials and methodsCone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, which included teeth either side of the MF, were randomly selected. The anonymised CBCT images were reconstructed and examined in coronal, axial and sagittal planes, using three-dimensional viewing software, to determine the relationship and distance between MF and adjacent mandibular teeth. The actual distance between the root apex and MF was calculated mathematically using Pythagoras’ theorem. If present, the incidence of an AL in the axial plane was also recorded.ResultsThe root apex of the mandibular second premolar (70 %), followed by the first premolar (18 %) and then the first molar (12 %), was the closest to the MF. Ninety-six percent of root apices evaluated were >3 mm from the MF. An AL was present in 88 % of the cases.ConclusionsWith regards to endodontic treatment, the risk of nerve injury in the vicinity of the MF would appear to be low. However, the high incidence of the AL highlights the need for clinicians to be aware and careful of this important anatomical feature.Clinical relevanceThe risk of injury to the MN with endodontic treatment would appear to be low, but given the high incidence, it is important to be aware and be careful of the AL.

Abstract:Background: Determining the exact location of mandibular foramen is an important factor prior to Inferior Alveolar Nerve (IAN) block injection. The aim of this study is to assess the position of Mandibular Foramen (MF) and its variations using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Methods: This study was conducted on CBCT images of 80 females and 80 males (18 to 68 years). The distance between the MF and the anterior border of ramus (A), inferior border of mandible (B), superior border of mandible (C), and occlusal plane was measured. Data were analyzed by the student t-test, bivariate correlation analysis, paired sample t-test, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The mean amount of A, B and C distances, and the mean distance from the occlusal plane to the center of MF were 13.76, 24.24, 12.32, and 7.59 mm, respectively, with no significant difference between the right and left sides (p>0.05). The mean B and C distances were significantly smaller in females than males (p<0.05). The mean size of the measured angle was 43.2°. Significant correlations were noted between aging and decreased A distance, and reduction in the angle between the contralateral premolars and MF (p<0.05). Conclusion: Knowledge about the position of MF can enhance the surgical procedures in this region. Using a 21-25 mm needle would be associated with lower risk of needle fracture during IAN block injection. Also, needle insertion angle <45-degrees is optimal for the samples assessed in this study.
Study of anatomical variations of the zygomaticofacial foramen and calculation of reliable reference points for operation

Abstract:Dissection on to the facial aspect of the zygoma is common in procedures of the midface for trauma, craniofacial deformity, and cosmesis. These procedures carry the risk of injury to the neurovascular structures that exit from the zygomaticofacial foramen (ZFF). The purpose of this study was to map the ZFF, and to establish reliable reference points from which to identify it before and during operation. We also aimed to compare the anatomy of the ZFF between sexes and among geographical populations. A total of 429 adult skulls from nine geographical sites were used. A cross-line laser was superimposed on to each zygoma to generate consistent landmarks (lines 1 and 2) from which to measure the ZFF, and the number of ZFF on each zygoma was recorded. The site and incidence of ZFF differed significantly among geographical populations, but not between sexes. Of all 858 sides, no foramina were found in 16.3%, one foramen in 49.8%, two foramina in 29%, three in 3.4% and four in 1.4%. A total of 93% of foramina were within a 25mm diameter zone (ZFF zone) centred 5mm anterior to the intersection of lines 1 and 2 on the right zygoma, and 94% were within equivalent measurements on the left. Using these landmarks, we propose a new method of identifying a ZFF zone that is irrespective of sex or geographical population. This technique may be useful in the prevention of iatrogenic damage to the ZFF neurovascular bundle during procedures on the midface and in local nerve blocks.
Available bone morphology and status of neural structures in the mandibular interforaminal region: three-dimensional analysis of anatomical structures

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the size and morphology of the mandible and to determine state of neural structures for the planning of the dental implantation using cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT). Methods: Of the 252 patients, CBCT images of 48 selected patients were evaluated. The bone height and width were measured and the type of the mental portion of the inferior alveolar canal, the anterior loop length (ALL), the location of the incisive canal and lingual foramen were identified with cross-sectional and multiplane reformatted CBCT images. According to buccal and lingual concavities, the shape of the mandible is classified as type A, B and C. Results: Bone widths of males were significantly higher than female (p < 0.05). The thickest part of the alveolar bone was measured in the middle triple zone (d line) and the thinnest part was measured in the area near the alveolar crest (b line). The most seen type of mandible was type B (45.8%) that mandible was concave on the buccal side. Bone heights had a tendency to increase towards to the anterior mandible, and bone height in male patients was slightly but not significantly greater than that in female patients. ALL was 4.2 ± 1.2 mm and visible incisive canal length on CBCT was 9.7 ± 3.8 mm. Conclusion: CBCT assessment of morphological features of the alveolar bone and locations of nerve canals and foramina in the anterior-premolar region of mandible represent useful practical anatomical information about the interforaminal region. This information is the guide to the dentist before implant surgery.
An in vitro study on the position of the major apical foramen in mandibular permanent human teeth

Abstract:Objective To determine the location of the major foramen and the deviation distance from the anatomical root apex in human mandibular teeth.Methods A total of 162 madibular root specimens (194 major apical foramen)were examined under optical stereomicroscope.The distance from the anatomical apex to the most occlusal point of the major foramen was measured using a micrometric scale with an accuracy of 0.01 mm.The deviation of the major foramen from the anatomical apex was classified as central or lateral (buccal,lingual,mesial,or distal).Results In 44.3 ％ (86/194) of specimens,the major apical foramen deviated from root apex.The most frequent deviations of the foramen were in mandibular premolars 56.5％ (26/46) and to the distal 15.5％ (30/194).Fourteen point nine percent(29/194) of the major apical foramens were deviated to the buccal and lingual positions.The mean distance between the major foramen and the anatomical root apex was 0.32 mm(range:0-1.88 mm).The mean distance was larger in molars (0.37 mm;range:0-1.88 mm) and smaller in anterior teeth(0.24 mm;range:0-1.2 mm).Conclusions Forty-four point three percent of major foramens deviated from apex in mandibular teeth,and the mean distance of deviation was 0.32 mm.The most frequent deviations of the foramen were to the distal.
Evaluation of the Linear Relationship of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve Canal to the Lateral Cortex and the Alveolar Crest in the Posterior Mandible: A Computed Tomographic Study

Abstract:Background and objective: A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate a clinically relevant position of the inferior alveolar nerve and canal with respect to the lateral cortex, alveolar crest, and first and second molar root apices in adult dentate patients. Methods: The study was conducted in the patients who reported various oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for whom preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan was taken for the required surgical procedures. CTs were selected based on the selection criteria, and a total of 50 CTs were evaluated. Predictor variables were gender and side. Outcome variables were the average linear buccal measurements from the lateral cortex to the outer cortical margin of the inferior alveolar canal from below the mandibular foramen till the mental foramen, linear vertical measurements from the alveolar crest to the superior crest of the inferior alveolar canal in the third, second and first molar regions, and linear vertical distance from the superior aspect of inferior alveolar canal till the apices of second and third molars. Descriptive statistics were analysed with t test and paired t test. P value < 0.05 was taken as significant. Results: The study sample was composed of 27 male and 23 female patients with a mean age of 29 ± 4.6 years. The mean value of linear measurements of IAN to the right lateral cortex at the mandibular foramen was 4.96 ± 1.13, and for the left side, it was 4.79 ± 1.33. The mean values of linear measurements from the superior aspect of IAN canal to the alveolar crest at third, second and first molar regions obtained in this study were 18.5 ± 3.79, 19 + 3.83 and 19.5 + 3.48 for the right side and 17.8 + 3.86, 18.8 + 3.54 and 19.143.31 for the left side, respectively. The average linear measurements of IAN to the root apex of first molar were 10.8 3.89 for the right side and 10.868 + 3.85 for the left side; for second molars, they were 10.5 + 3.62 for the right side and 10.52 + 3.62 for the left side. Gender and side influenced the outcome with varying statistical significance. Conclusion: The study has identified the average linear measurements of the buccal cortical bone along the path of IAN in the mandible, average height of alveolar bone above the IAN and average distance between the IAN with the first and second molar root apices. This will be useful guide while planning and performing various mandibular surgical procedures close to the IAN nerve and procedures that can disturb the IAN. The implications of these findings will influence the course of surgery.

Abstract:A BSTRACT Background: Surgical procedures in the anterior mandibular region require a profound understanding of the complex anatomical structures to ensure patient safety. The lingual foramen (LF) and its intra-osseous canal are pivotal structures, supplying vascular and neural support to the mental region. The prevalence of LF is widely recognized, with variations among populations. Methods: The study involved 650 adult participants. Data were collected using high-resolution cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and statistical analysis was conducted, establishing inter-rater agreement. Results: The population had a varied age distribution, with males comprising 53.23% and females comprising 46.77%. The median lingual canal was found in the Supra and Infra spinosum (65.38%). Most participants had lateral lingual canals (60.92%). The most prevalent lingual foramina was 4 (30.62%). The study found no significant associations between gender and LF diameter, distribution in different travel directions, or LF locations. However, males had a slightly larger diameter. Conclusion: The findings provide valuable insights into LF variations based on anatomical locations, and there were no statistically significant differences in measurements across different age groups. This knowledge contributes to the evolving field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, ensuring better patient outcomes.
Three-dimensional analysis of coronal root canal morphology of 136 permanent mandibular first molars by micro-computed tomography

Abstract:BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Minimally invasive endodontic approach become a research hotspot and may prevent the fracture of endodontically-treated teeth. This research aims to measure the coronal root canal morphology of permanent mandibular first molars in 3D and propose a new minimally invasive endodontic approach based on this measurement.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 136 permanent mandibular first molars were involved and reconstructed in 3D models with canals. Then, the morphology characteristics of the coronal root canal were measured.RESULTS: Overall, the distribution of root canal orifices was more centralized than other landmarks. The landmarks were located more mesiobuccally to the center of the occlusal plane of molars. Specifically, the measurements of the maximum curvature of coronal root canals in the axial direction were: in 3-canals 2-rooted teeth, the average angles of curvatures were 23°,25°,11° for mesiobuccal (MB), mesiolingual (ML) and distobuccal (DB) canals, respectively; in 4-canals 2-rooted teeth were 23°,25°,12°,16°for MB, ML, DB, and distolingual (DL) canals, respectively; in 4-canals 3-rooted teeth were 25°,27°,17°,39° for MB, ML, DB, and DL canals, respectively. The degrees of coronal root canal curvatures in the horizontal direction were: in 3-canals teeth, the average angles of curvatures were -1°,47°,-2° for MB, ML and DB canals, respectively; in 4-canals 2-rooted teeth were -4°,41°,-25°,48° for MB, ML, DB, and DL canals, respectively; in 4-canals 3-rooted teeth were -3°,33°,-43°,79° for MB, ML, DB, and DL canals, respectively.CONCLUSION: The results of this study are similar to those previously obtained using CBCT and can help us design endodontic approaches.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Locating the mandibular foramen (MF) through imaging is clinically important for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) anesthesia and mandibular ramus osteotomies. Although cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is superior in imaging the mandible, an orthopantomogram (OPG) is preferred for its ease of use and availability. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of digital OPG in localizing the MF, in a subset of the Middle Eastern population. Methods: Radiographic images (OPG and CBCT) of selected patients (adults, dentulous and no mandibular abnormalities) were used to locate the MF through digital measurements (mm) of the anteroposterior distance from the anterior border of the ramus (MF-AP) and the superoinferior position from the mandibular occlusal plane (MF-SI). Measurements were statistically compared between OPG and CBCT for accuracy. Differences in measurements between OPG and CBCT were compared against the anatomic location (right/left), age and biological sex, assuming a p-value < 0.05 as significant. Results: A total of 204 radiographic records (males: 100/females: 104/mean age: 34.65 ± 11.55 years) were evaluated. The measurements for the MF were MF-AP-OPG (right: 13.53 ± 2.44/left: 13.19 ± 2.25), MF-AP-CBCT (right: 13.61 ± 2.39/left: 13.36 ± 2.19), MF-SI-OPG (right: 5.25 ± 1.71/left: 5.41 ± 1.65) and MF-SI-CBCT (right: 5.59 ± 1.66/left: 5.52 ± 1.61). Measurements between OPG and CBCT were not significantly different, except for MF-SI (right) (p = 0.042). While the overall difference between OPG and CBCT (MF-AP/MF-SI) measurements showed a significant association (p < 0.01) with the anatomic location (right/left), a significant association (p < 0.05) with biological sex was observed only for MF-AP. Conclusions: Based on this study's outcomes, digital OPG is an accurate modality to locate the MF based on anteroposterior (MF-AP) and superoinferior (MF-SI) measurements. This would be clinically beneficial for dental and oral surgeons to achieve the optimum IAN block anesthesia based on preoperative panoramic radiographs. Similarly, it would assist maxillofacial surgeons in planning mandibular orthognathic surgeries and ramus osteotomies without complications.

Abstract:This study investigated the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based features of the mandibular canal, mental foramen, anterior loop, and accessory mental foramina with respect to age and sex. A total of 306 CBCT mandibular images were included in this retrospective study to measure the mandibular canal location and extension, the mental foramen position, the presence of the anterior loop, and the accessory mental foramina. The measurements were obtained in sagittal, coronal, and axial views. Descriptive statistics are presented. Sex-related differences, correlations, and comparisons were calculated using SPSS at 5% significance level. The mandibular canal was located more coronal and medial in male patients. The majority of cases had the mental foramen located just apical to the mandibular second premolar with a mean height of 2.94 mm and a mean length of 3.28 mm. Age affected the size of the mental foramen. The mental canal in all cases tended to show a coronal direction. Mesial extension of the anterior loop was found in 66.01% of the images while accessory mental foramina were detected in 2.6%. The complexity of the mandibular canal, mental foramen, anterior loop, and accessory mental foramina among Sudanese patients with respect to age and sex was confirmed.

Improving Vision Among Older Adults

Abstract:A major problem for the rapidly growing population of older adults (age 65 and over) is age-related declines in vision, which have been associated with increased risk of falls and vehicle crashes. Research suggests that this increased risk is associated with declines in contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. We examined whether a perceptual-learning task could be used to improve age-related declines in contrast sensitivity. Older and younger adults were trained over 7 days using a forced-choice orientation-discrimination task with stimuli that varied in contrast with multiple levels of additive noise. Older adults performed as well after training as did college-age younger adults prior to training. Improvements transferred to performance for an untrained stimulus orientation and were not associated with changes in retinal illuminance. Improvements in far acuity in younger adults and in near acuity in older adults were also found. These findings indicate that behavioral interventions can greatly improve visual performance for older adults.
Three-dimensional analysis of mandibular and mental canals corroborating with teeth and mental foramen by cone beam computed tomography

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to analyse the 3D patterns of the mandibular and mental canals (MDC and MC) referring to the surrounding prominent surgical landmarks such as teeth and mental foramen by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: CBCT scans of 354 patients aged 18-67 years with mandibular first premolar to second molar were included and reconstructed 3-dimensionally (3D) by mimics. The parameters of MDC and MC were measured referring to teeth and mental foramen. Results: From the first premolars to the second molars, the mandibular canals showed a trend of gradually closer to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) of the adjacent teeth and farther away from the buccal cortical plate. The distance of the MDC with the root apexes (RA) was relatively constant from the first premolar to the first molar, but became much closer to the second molar. About 10.8% of the second molars had MDC-RA distances of shorter than 2 mm, and 1.34% even had the MDC superior to the RA. Moreover, the Type III of MC presented in 66.0% of the subjects and had a relatively longer length. Besides, the existence of Type I MC may be related to the MDC featuring with close distances to the RA and CEJ of the adjacent teeth. Conclusion: Dentists and surgeons should know the patterns of mandibular and mental canals. A better understanding of the MDC and MC and their relationship to local anatomical landmarks may facilitate the planning of surgeries and alert potential nerve injuries in the operative procedures.

Abstract:Combining diffuse optical tomography methods with Raman spectroscopy of tissue provides the ability for in vivo measurements of chemical and molecular characteristics, which have the potential for being useful in diagnostic imaging. In this study a system for Raman tomography was developed and tested. A third generation microCT coupled system was developed to combine 10 detection fibers and 5 excitation fibers with laser line filtering and a Cytop reference signal. Phantom measurements of hydroxyapatite concentrations from 50 to 300 mg/ml had a linear response. Fiber placement and experiment design was optimized using cadaver animals with live animal measurements acquired to validate the systems capabilities. Promising results from the initial animal experiments presented here, pave the way for a study of longitudinal measurements during fracture healing and the scaling of the Raman tomography system towards human measurements.
