Abstract:Determining the hazards posed by microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) requires an understanding of plastic degradation processes when exposed to environmental weathering forces. However, despite their perceived risks, limited information exists on the natural weathering progression of microplastics in marine environments. Our findings from environmentally realistic conditions reveal that long-term marine weathering resulted in significant degradation of plastic surfaces and bulk-phases, which varied by time and plastic polymer type. Plastics displayed biofouling, and an altered surface morphology, thermal stability and chemical signature. Secondary micronanoplastics (MNPs, <1 μm) were formed from weathered plastic surfaces, supported by a significant reduction in the size of PCL and PVC pellets. Using real world data, we reveal that plastic surfaces can degrade at a rate of up to 469.73 μm per year, 12 times greater than previous estimates. Our time-series data contributes valuable information towards developing plastic specific risk assessment frameworks and future plastics policy.

Abstract:Plastic waste is currently generated at a rate approaching 400 Mt year–1. The amount of plastics accumulating in the environment is growing rapidly, yet our understanding of its persistence is very limited. This Perspective summarizes the existing literature on environmental degradation rates and pathways for the major types of thermoplastic polymers. A metric to harmonize disparate types of measurements, the specific surface degradation rate (SSDR), is implemented and used to extrapolate half-lives. SSDR values cover a very wide range, with some of the variability arising due to degradation studies conducted in different natural environments. SSDRs for high density polyethylene (HDPE) in the marine environment range from practically 0 to approximately 11 μm year–1. This approach yields a number of interesting insights. Using a mean SSDR for HDPE in the marine environment, linear extrapolation leads to estimated half-lives ranging from 58 years (bottles) to 1200 years (pipes). For example, SSDRs for HDPE and polylactic acid (PLA) are surprisingly similar in the marine environment, although PLA degrades approximately 20 times faster than HDPE on land. Our study highlights the need for better experimental studies under well-defined reaction conditions, standardized reporting of rates, and methods to simulate polymer degradation using.Reported degradation rates of common plastics were harmonized using the specific surface degradation rate (SSDR), which was then used to estimate half-lives.

Early signs of plastic degradation and fragmentation: A 40-day study in marine environments

Abstract:Conventional plastics are widely present in the ocean as marine plastic debris. This in-situ study investigates the degradability and fragmentation of seven common conventional plastics (PET, PVC, PS, EPS, PP, HDPE, and LDPE) in natural marine environments over a 40-day period. All plastics showed significant chemical changes and oscillating plastic oxidation levels, indicating the synergistic processes of oxidation and removal of oxidation products. Polystyrenes and polymers with heteroatoms showed the largest degradation potentials, while pure polyolefins exhibited the highest fragmentation risks. SEM images suggest potentials of EPS and pure polyolefins in generating microplastic fragments, and polymers with heteroatoms in generating nanoplastic fragments. PS did not exhibit any surface degradation signs, potentially due to enhanced crystallinity through oxidation. The findings highlight the need for reduced usage of EPS and pure polyolefins which are commonly applied as disposable utensils and food packaging, and prioritized cleanup of these polymers to reduce microplastic pollution in the environment.

Abstract:Abstract We studied the fragmentation of conventional thermoplastic and compostable plastic items in a laboratory seawater microcosm. In the microcosm, polyurethane foams, cellulose acetate cigarette filters, and compostable polyester and polylactic acid items readily sank, whereas polyethylene air pouches, latex balloons, polystyrene foams and polypropylene cups remained afloat. Microbial biofilms dominated by Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes and Bacteriodetes grew on the plastics, and caused some of the polyethylene items to sink to the bottom. Electrical resistances (ER) of plastic items decreased as function of time, an indication that seawater had penetrated into microscopic crevices in the plastic that had developed over time. Rate constants for ER decrease in polyethylene items in the microcosm were similar to tensile elongation decrease of polyethylene sheets floating in sea, measured previously by others. Weight loss of plastic items was ≤ 1% per year for polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene, 3–5% for latex, polyethylene terephthalate and polyurethane, 15% for cellulose acetate, and 7–27% for polyester and polylactic acid compostable bags. The formation of microplastics observed in the microcosm was responsible for at least part of the weight loss. This study emphasizes the need to obtain experimental data on plastic litter degradation under conditions that are realistic for marine environments.

Abstract:The present study employs X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to analyze plastic samples subjected to degradation processes with the aim to gain insight on the relevant chemical processes and disclose fragmentation mechanisms. Two model plastics, namely polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE), are selected and analyzed before and after artificial UV radiation-triggered weathering, under simulated environmental hydrodynamic conditions, in fresh and marine water for different time intervals. The object of the study is to identify and quantify chemical groups possibly evidencing the occurrence of hydrolysis and oxidation reactions, which are the basis of degradation processes in the environment, determining macroplastic fragmentation. Artificially weathered plastic samples are analyzed also by Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy. Changes in surface chemistry with weathering are revealed by XPS, involving the increase in chemical moieties (hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxyl functionalities) which can be correlated with the degradation processes responsible for macroplastic fragmentation. On the other hand, the absence of significant modifications upon plastics weathering evidenced by Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy confirms the importance of investigating plastics surface, which represents the very first part of the materials exposed to degradation agents, thus revealing the power of XPS studies for this purpose. The XPS data on experimentally weathered particles are compared with ones obtained on microplastics collected from real marine environment for investigating the occurring degradation processes.

Microplastics impair extracellular enzymatic activities and organic matter cycling in oligotrophic sandy marine sediments

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous and constantly accumulating in the marine environment, especially sediments. Yet, it is not well clarified if and how their carbon backbone could interact with surrounding sediments, eventually impairing key benthic processes. We assessed the effects of a 'pulse' contamination event of MPs on sedimentary organic matter (OM) quantity, quality and extracellular enzymatic activities (EEAs), which are well established descriptors of benthic ecosystem functioning. Marine sediments were exposed for 30 days to environmentally relevant concentrations (∼0.2 % in weight) of naturally weathered particles (size range 70-210 μm) of polyurethane, polyethylene, and a mixture of the most common polymers that are documented to accumulate in marine sediments. Despite the low concentration, contaminated sediments showed significantly different composition of OM, showing a decrease in lipid content and increase in protein. Moreover, we document a significant decrease (over 25 %) in quantity of biopolymeric C already after 15 days of exposure, compared to controls. Contaminated sediments showed lower C degradation rates (up to -40 %) and altered EEAs, with alkaline phosphatase being ∼50 % enhanced and aminopeptidase being reduced over 35 % compared to control treatments. Overall, the effects generated by the mixture of polymers were smaller than those exerted by the same amount of a single polymer. Our results provide insights on how that MPs can significantly alter marine sedimentary biogeochemistry through altered benthic processes, that could cumulatively impair whole benthic trophic webs by enhancing the accumulation and possible longer-term storage of recalcitrant organic C in the seabed.

Abstract:The fragmentation of plastic debris is a key pathway to the formation of microplastic pollution. These disintegration processes depend on the materials' physical and chemical characteristics, but insight into these interrelationships is still limited, especially under natural conditions. Five plastics of known polymer/additive compositions and processing histories were deployed in aquatic environments and recovered after six and twelve months. The polymer types used were linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), oxo-degradable LLDPE (oxoLLDPE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polyamide-6 (PA6), and poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Four geographically distinct locations across Aotearoa/New Zealand were chosen: three marine sites and a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Accelerated UV-weathering under controlled laboratory conditions was also carried out to evaluate artificial ageing as a model for plastic degradation in the natural environment. The samples' physical characteristics and surface microstructures were studied for each deployment location and exposure time. The strongest effects were found for oxoLLDPE upon artificial ageing, with increased crystallinity , intense surface cracking, and substantial deterioration of its mechanical properties. However, no changes to the same extent were found after recovery of the deployed material. In the deployment environments, the chemical nature of the plastics was the most relevant factor determining their behaviours. Few significant differences between the four aquatic locations were identified, except for PA6, where indications for biological surface degradation were found only in seawater, not the WWTP. In some cases, artificial ageing reasonably mimicked the changes which some plastic properties underwent in aquatic environments, but generally, it was no reliable model for natural degradation processes. The findings from this study have implications for the understanding of the initial phases of plastic degradation in aquatic environments, eventually leading to microplastics formation. They can also guide the interpretation of accelerated laboratory ageing for the fate of aquatic plastic pollution, and for the testing of aged plastic samples.

Abstract:Although primary CD8 responses to acute infections are independent of CD4 help, it is unknown whether a similar situation applies to secondary responses. We show that depletion of CD4 cells during the recall response has minimal effect, whereas depletion during the priming phase leads to reduced responses by memory CD8 cells to reinfection. Memory CD8 cells generated in CD4+/+ mice responded normally when transferred into CD4−/− hosts, whereas memory CD8 cells generated in CD4−/− mice mounted defective recall responses in CD4+/+ adoptive hosts. These results demonstrate a previously undescribed role for CD4 help in the development of functional CD8 memory.
Laboratory-Simulated Photoirradiation Reveals Strong Resistance of Primary Macroplastics to Weathering

Abstract:The photodegradation of macroplastics in the marine environment remains poorly understood. Here we investigated the weathering of commercially available plastics (tabs 1.3 x 4.4 x 0.16 cm), including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polycarbonate (PC), in seawater under laboratory simulated weathering, UVa and mechanical agitation, for 3-9 months, which is equivalent to up to 100-300 years of natural sunlight coastal exposure. After the exposure, the physical integrity and thermal stability of the tabs remained relatively intact, suggesting that the bulk polymer chains were not severely altered despite the strong irradiation, likely due to their low specific surface area. In contrast, the surface layer (~1 μm) of the tabs was highly oxidized and eroded after 9 months of weathering. Several antioxidant additives, such as butylated hydroxytoluene, were identified in the plastics through low temperature pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS), suggesting that these antioxidants may have played a role in slowing down the photodegradation. The Pyr-GC/MS results also revealed many new oxygen-containing compounds formed during the photodegradation, and these compounds indicated the dominance of chain scission reactions during weathering. These findings highlight the strong resistance of industrial macroplastics to weathering, emphasizing the need for a broader range of plastics with varying properties and sizes to accurately estimate plastic degradation in the marine environment.

Abstract:To better understand the fate and assess the ingestible fraction of microplastics (by aquatic organisms), it is essential to quantify and characterize of their released from larger items under environmental realistic conditions. However, the current information on the fragmentation and size-based characteristics of released microplastics, for example from bio-based thermoplastics, is largely unknown. The goal of our work was to assess the fragmentation and release of microplastics, under ultraviolet (UV) radiation and in seawater, from polylactic acid (PLA) items, a bio-based polymer, and from polypropylene (PP) items, a petroleum-based polymer. To do so, we exposed pristine items of PLA and PP, immersed in filtered natural seawater, to accelerated UV radiation for 57 and 76 days, simulating 18 and 24 months of mean natural solar irradiance in Europe. Our results indicated that 76-day UV radiation induced the fragmentation of parent plastic items and the microplastics (50 - 5000 µm) formation from both PP and PLA items. The PP samples (48 ± 26 microplastics / cm<sup>2</sup>) released up to nine times more microplastics than PLA samples (5 ± 2 microplastics / cm<sup>2</sup>) after a 76-day UV exposure, implying that the PLA tested items had a lower fragmentation rate than PP. The particles' length of released microplastics was parameterized using a power law exponent (α), to assess their size distribution. The obtained α values were 3.04 ± 0.11 and 2.54 ± 0.06 (-) for 76-day UV weathered PP and PLA, respectively, meaning that PLA microplastics had a larger sized microplastics fraction than PP particles. With respect to their two-dimensional shape, PLA microplastics also had lower width-to-length ratio (0.51 ± 0.17) and greater fiber-shaped fractions (16%) than PP microplastics (0.57 ± 0.17% and 11%, respectively). Overall, the bio-based PLA items under study were more resistant to fragmentation and release of microplastics than the petroleum-based PP tested items, and the parameterized characteristics of released microplastics were polymer-dependent. Our work indicates that even though bio-based plastics may have a slower release of fragmented particles under UV radiation compared to conventional polymer types, they still have the potential to act as a source of microplastics in the marine environment, with particles being available to biota within ingestible size fractions, if not removed before major fragmentation processes.

Physio-chemical degradation of single-use plastics in natural weather and marine environments

Abstract:Plastic pollution has reached concerning levels globally, with single-use plastic products (SUPs) comprising at least 50% of plastic waste. This study investigates the physical and chemical degradation of frequently used SUPs, including petroleum-based and bio-based plastics, in natural Northern European coastal weather and marine environments over a three-year period from 2019 to 2022. Addressing a critical knowledge gap, this research was based on a hypothesis that real-world ageing studies on SUPs would produce more accurate time- and process-lines for their transformation from macro-to microplastics than are available today based on the modeling studies more frequently used. The study employs optical examination, mechanical testing, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine and relate physical and chemical changes with time. The results indicate that SUPs undergo significantly faster degradation in natural weather than predicted to date. Photooxidation emerges as the primary degradation pathway for all SUPs, emphasizing the role of light in plastic breakdown. Importantly, physical degradation to microplastics in natural environments is not always associated with significant chemical changes such as breaking chemical bonds. Black SUPs exhibit greater resistance to visible light and ultraviolet radiation than equivalent white and transparent examples. In marine environments, SUPs degrade measurably slower than in air, their degradation slowing with increasing distance from the water surface. Our findings indicate the urgent need for strategies that mitigate the impacts of photo-oxidation of SUPs. Such strategies may include a focus on the removal of post-use SUPs from pavements, roads, beaches, and water surfaces where photo-oxidation is faster than underwater and underground. Preferential use of black SUPs over white or transparent should also be considered.

Abstract:Abstract As plastic marine debris continues to accumulate in the oceans, many important questions surround this global dilemma. In particular, how many descriptors would be necessary to model the degradation behavior of ocean plastics or understand if degradation is possible? Here, we report a data-driven approach to elucidate degradation trends of plastic debris by linking abiotic and biotic degradation behavior in seawater with physical properties and molecular structures. The results reveal a hierarchy of predictors to quantify surface erosion as well as combinations of features, like glass transition temperature and hydrophobicity, to classify ocean plastics into fast, medium, and slow degradation categories. Furthermore, to account for weathering and environmental factors, two equations model the influence of seawater temperature and mechanical forces.

Abstract:The extensive usage of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) materials in marine environments raises concerns about their potential contribution to plastic pollution. Various factors contribute to the degradation of HDPE in marine environments, including UV radiation, seawater hydrolysis, biodegradation, and mechanical stress. Despite their supposed long lifespans, there is still a lack of understanding about the long-term degradation mechanisms that cause weathering of seawater-exposed HDPE products. In this research, the impact of UV radiation on the degradation of HDPE pile sleeves was studied in natural as well as laboratory settings to isolate the UV effect. After nine years of exposure to the marine environment in natural settings, the HDPE pile sleeves exhibited an increase in oxygen-containing surface functional groups and more morphological changes compared to accelerated UVB irradiation in the laboratory. This indicated that combined non-UV mechanisms may play a major role in HDPE degradation than UV irradiation alone. However, UVB irradiation was found to release dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen from HDPE pile sleeves, reaching levels of up to 15 mg/L and 2 mg/L, respectively. Our findings underscore the significance of taking into account both UV and non-UV degradation mechanisms when evaluating the role of HDPE in contributing to marine plastic pollution.

Photodegradation of biobased polymer blends in seawater: A major source of microplastics in the marine environment

Abstract:Introduction: Biobased polymer blends have been recommended as an eco-friendly solution to abate plastic pollution in the environment. However, the formation of microplastics (MPs) by photodegradation of biobased polymer blends in the marine environment is still not well understood. In this study, we investigated the formation of MPs and the changes in the physicochemical properties of three types of biobased polymer blends after photodegradation in seawater. Methods: The investigated materials included non-biodegradable polyethylene/ thermoplastic starch blends (PE/TPS) and polypropylene/thermoplastic starch blends (PP/TPS), as well as biodegradable polylactic acid/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/thermoplastic starch blends (PLA/PBAT/TPS). The control groups were the corresponding neat polymers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polylactic acid (PLA). Results: The size distribution of the pristine and aged MPs indicated that the polymer blends were more likely to produce small-sized particles after photodegradation due to their poorer mechanical properties and lower resistance to UV irradiation than the neat polymers. Noticeable surface morphology alterations, including cracks, holes, and pits, were observed for polymer blends after photodegradation, while neat polymers were relatively resistant. After photodegradation, the attenuated total reflection Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectrum of the polymer blends showed a significant decrease in the characteristic bands of thermoplastic starch (TPS), indicating depletion of their starch fractions. The C1s spectra of the polymer blends demonstrated that the aged MPs contained fewer -OH groups than the pristine MPs, further confirming the photodegradation of TPS. The molecular weight distribution curve of the polymer blends shifted significantly towards low molecular weight, suggesting the occurrence of chain scission during photodegradation. These results indicate that the polymer blends have a higher degree of photodegradation than neat polymers, and thereby generate more small-sized MPs than neat polymers. Photodegradation caused changes in the contact angle and surface charge of MPs derived from biobased polymer blends, which may affect the vector effects of MPs on any coexisting pollutants. Discussion: In summary, polymer blends may pose a higher risk to the marine environment than neat polymers, and caution should be taken in promoting biobased polymer blends.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically developed the long–term photoaging behavior of different-sized polypropylene (PP) floating plastic wastes in a coastal seawater environment. After 68 d of laboratory accelerated UV irradiation, the PP plastic particle size decreased by 99.3 ± 0.15%, and nanoplastics (average size: 435 ± 250 nm) were produced with a maximum yield of 57.9%, evidencing that natural sunlight irradiation–induced long-term photoaging ultimately converts floating plastic waste in marine environments into micro- and nanoplastics. Subsequently, when comparing the photoaging rate of different sized PP plastics in coastal seawater, we discovered that large sized PP plastics (1000-2000 and 5000-7000 μm) showed a lower photoaging rate than that of small sized PP plastic debris (0–150 and 300–500 μm), with the decrease rate of plastic crystallinity as follow: 0–150 μm (2.01 d −1 ) > 300–500 μm (1.25 d −1 ) > 1000–2000 μm (0.780 d −1 ) and 5000-7000 μm (0.900 d −1 ). This result can be attributed to the small size PP plastics producing more reactive oxygen species (ROS) species, with the formation capacity of hydroxyl radical •OH as follows: 0–150 μm (6.46 × 10 −15 M) > 300–500 μm (4.87 × 10 −15 M) > 500–1000 (3.61 × 10 −15 M) and 5000–7000 μm (3.73 × 10 −15 M). The findings obtained in this study offer a new perspective on the formation and ecological risks of PP nanoplastics in current coastal seawater environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are one of the major substantial pollutants in the environment and are stored in sediments worldwide, especially in marine environments. This study shed light on the abundance, distribution, sources and chemical composition of MPs present in the surface sediments collected from the shelf part of the southeast coast of India, Bay of Bengal. A total of twenty-seven surface sediment samples were collected to study MPs pollution. The abundance and morphological characteristics of MPs were determined by counting using an Olympus SXZ7 stereo microscope. Raman spectroscopy analysis was used to identify the polymer type of the MPs. The average abundance of MPs in the study area is 460±275 MPs/kg in dry sediment. Regarding colour, transparent particles were predominant (46.42%), followed by blue, green, brown, etc. With respect to particle shape and size, fibres and 500-μm sized MPs are abundant. Polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene (PS) are the polymer types characterised in the study area. The higher abundance of MPs in the study area can be attenuated to human interruptions, viz., tourism, fishing and inappropriate sewage disposal in the marine environment. In addition to this, population density also plays an important role in providing MPs to the marine environment. This study provides the most valuable data to extrapolate the research for mitigating MP pollution in oceans. It also informs mankind about their disastrous activities on the marine environment, which is expected to recuperate quickly and negatively impact human health and the functionality of the marine system.

Polyhydroxybutyrate Plastics Show Rapid Disintegration and More Straightforward Biogeochemical Impacts than Polyethylene under Marine Biofragmentation

Abstract:Although massive studies have investigated the spatiotemporally occurring marine plastisphere, a new microbial ecosystem colonizing the surfaces of plastics, the resulting biofragmentation process and impacts of plastics on biogeochemical cycles remain largely unknown. Here, we leverage synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared spectromicroscopy (FTIR mapping) and metagenomic sequencing to explore independent marine microcosms amended with petroleum-based polyethylene (PE) and biobased polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) plastic films. FTIR mapping results demonstrate unequal fragmentation scenarios by which the PE plastic rarely releases oxidized fragments while PHB disintegrates quickly, gradually forming fragments composed of extracellular polymeric substances resembling plastic films. Metagenomic analysis shows the critical role of hydrocarbonoclastic lineages in the biodegradation of the two plastics by the fatty acid degradation pathway, where the PE plastics host different microbial trajectories between the plastisphere (dominated by Alcanivorax) and surrounding seawater. In contrast, the PHB addition demonstrates decreased microbial richness and diversity, consistent community composition (dominated by Phaeobacter and Marinobacter), and apparently stimulated sulfur cycle and denitrification pathways in both the plastisphere and surrounding seawater. Our study gives scientific evidence on the marine biotic processes distinguishing petroleum- and biobased plastics, highlighting marine PHB input exerting straightforward impacts on the water phase and deserving critical management practices.
Aging simulation of thin-film plastics in different environments to examine the formation of microplastic

Abstract:Microplastics have received considerable attention in recent years. Understanding the aging mechanism of plastics in different environments (land, fresh water, estuary, and ocean) is critical to control the microplastic formation. Therefore, the aging process of plastics, including polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), in different environments was simulated by analyzing their physical and chemical structures by using the Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. After 23 weeks, micro-scale microplastics (size less than 100 μm) could be extracted from the plastic surface through smashing waves in all fresh water and seawater samples. However, complete fragmentation was observed only in the case of thin-film plastics (TFPs, thickness of approximately 10 μm). This phenomenon indicated that TFPs disintegrated to microplastics more easily in the water system than on land, and the water flow notably affected the production of micro-scale particles. Furthermore, ultraviolet radiation affected the chemical structure of plastics through a two-stage process in all environments. In the initial stage, chemical aging occurred in the amorphous regions of both PE and PP, leading to the generation of newly functional groups such as C=O at 1717 cm-1, and a reduced contact angle. In the later stage, PE exhibited additional crystals and increased contact angles, whereas PP demonstrated the tendency of producing oxygen-containing functional groups that could reduce the crystallinity. In addition, several inorganic salts (such as sulfate and phosphorus) in seawater likely combined with C-H-type stretches, thereby promoting the chemical aging of plastics.
Biodeterioration of Microplastics by Bacteria Isolated from Mangrove Sediment

Abstract:As a kind of ubiquitous emerging pollutant, microplastics (MPs) are persistent in the environment and have a large impact on the ecosystem. Fortunately, some microorganisms in the natural environment can degrade these persistent MPs without creating secondary pollution. In this study, 11 different MPs were selected as carbon sources to screen the microorganisms for degradable MPs and explore the possible mechanism of degradation. After repeated domestication, a relatively stable microbial community was obtained after approximately 30 days later. At this time, the biomass of the medium ranged from 88 to 699 mg/L. The growth of bacteria with different MPs ranged from 0.030 to 0.090 optical density (OD) 600 of the first generation to 0.009–0.081 OD 600 of the third generation. The weight loss method was used to determine the biodegradation ratios of different MPs. The mass losses of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), polyethylene (PE), and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) were relatively large, at 13.4%, 13.0%, and 12.7%, respectively; these figures for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) were relatively slight, 8.90% and 9.10%, respectively. The degradation half-life (t1/2) of 11 kinds of MPs ranges from 67 to 116 days. Among the mixed strains, Pseudomonas sp., Pandoraea sp., and Dyella sp. grew well. The possible degradation mechanism is that such microbial aggregates can adhere to the surface of MPs and form complex biofilms, secrete extracellular and intracellular enzymes, etc., break the hydrolyzable chemical bonds or ends of molecular chains by attacking the plastic molecular chains, and produce monomers, dimers, and other oligomers, leading to the reduction of the molecular weight of the plastic itself.
