Abstract:This paper presents results of the sound speed profiles (SSPs) inversion using a data set obtained in shallow water of South China Sea in 2016 summer with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) carrying source. In-site acoustic data collected by the vertical line array (VLA) are analyzed and employed for the inversion of time-evolving SSPs. The inversion is formulated as a tracking problem with the state-space model, in which the SSPs are parameterized by the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the degree of freedom. The differential evolution (DE) is implemented in the sequential process to maximize the a posterior probability. Results demonstrate the validation of the method for the SSP inversion, and the inversion errors are discussed.

Abstract:The conventional approaches to source reconstruction follow the fundamental limitation of the aperture of the array and the microphone density owing to expenditure and technical reasons, which aroused the problem of reducing the number of microphones. Nevertheless, one rudimental problem is simultaneously raised when the problem of reducing the number of microphones is conceived, which is explicated by what is the minimum number of microphones that should be used for the purpose of certificating the reconstruction performance. In this paper, the acoustic source reconstruction is viewed with a statistical learning perspective firstly, which brings in the minimum number of microphones in simultaneous measurements setup. Secondly, the problem of reducing the number of microphones is boiled down to rank minimisation in sequential measurements, which eludes the “overweening sparse” phenomenon caused by the <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$L0$</tex> minimisation in the acoustic source reconstruction scenario with the reduced number of microphones.

Abstract:Acoustic imaging is a standard technique for mapping acoustic source powers and positions from limited observations on microphone sensors, which often causes an ill-conditioned inverse problem. In this article, we firstly improve the forward model of acoustic power propagation by considering background noises at the sensor array, and the propagation uncertainty caused by wind tunnel effects. We then propose a robust super-resolution approach via sparsity constraint for acoustic imaging in strong background noises. The sparsity parameter is adaptively derived from the sparse distribution of source powers. The proposed approach can jointly reconstruct source powers and positions, as well as the background noise power. Our approach is compared with the conventional beamforming, deconvolution and sparse regularization methods by simulated, wind tunnel data and hybrid data respectively. It is feasible to apply the proposed approach for effectively mapping monopole sources in wind tunnel tests.

Abstract:Acoustic imaging is a powerful technique to localize and reconstruct source powers using microphone array, but it often involves timeconsuming and ill-posed inverse problems. In this paper, we propose to efficient build up the forward model of acoustic power propagation by using the convolution with the spatially invariant kernel. And kernel size and values are appropriately derived from the Symmetric Toepliz Block Toepliz of propagation matrix. For inverse problem, we then propose to apply hierarchical Variational Bayesian inference in order to achieve robust acoustic imaging in the colored background noises; Student's-t prior is explored to enforce the sparse distribution of acoustic powers and to obtain super resolution; moreover, wide dynamic range of estimated powers can be obtained thanks to the heavy tail of Student'st distribution; To achieve robust estimations, colored noise distributions are also modeled by the Student's-t prior, which does not excessively penalize large errors as the Gaussian prior does. Finally the proposed approach is compared with classical methods on the real data from wind tunnel experiments.

Abstract:Model-based signal processing methods, such as matched-field processing, are concerned with exploiting the combination of the sound propagation physics in an ocean waveguide and the observation data. As such, they require accurate knowledge of the ocean acoustic environment. This paper presents an approach of environmental inversion via acoustic data assimilation (ADA), intended specifically to reconstruct the sound-speed field perturbed by linear internal waves. It exploits a variety of information sources, including direct local sound-speed measurements, an internal wave model, a full field acoustic propagation model, and acoustic pressure measurements. Compared to the previous work on ADA, four important improvements have been made: 1) a linear internal wave model is included; 2) a more realistic shallow-water environment from the Shelf Break PRIMER 1996 experiment is considered in the numerical simulations; and 3) effect of the sediment on acoustic propagation is considered in the inversion algorithm. The results further demonstrate the validity of the ADA approach.

Abstract:Based on the local sound speed measurement model,the acoustic propagation model and the local acoustic pressure measurement model,the approach of ocean acoustic data assimilation suitable to shallow water environments is discussed.In this approach,according to the optimality principle,the a priori knowledge of the local sound speed and acoustic pressure fields is combined with the acoustic propagation model,which effectively improves the precision in the parameter estimation.To validate the approach,the sound speed field in shallow water expressed by empirical orthogonal functions and the geo-acoustic parameters are estimated via a numerical implementation of this approach using the experimental sound velocity measurement data and the effects of different model errors on the prccision in the parameter estimation are analyzed.The approach discussed in the paper gives a novel idea for acoustic tomography in shallow water.

Abstract:The acoustic imaging results in the diffuse field are seriously affected by reverberation. The acoustic source localization algorithms based on the free-field assumption will produce many artifacts in the reverberant environment. To achieve accurate acoustic source localization in a reverberant environment, a sound field morphological component analysis (SF-MCA) model and an enhanced alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm are proposed in this article. First, the solution of the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation is analyzed to characterize the acoustic components. Second, Green's function and plane-wave basis function serve as dictionaries for sparse representation of the acoustic signal in the frequency domain, and the corresponding decomposition coefficients are obtained by the enhanced ADMM algorithm. Finally, the accurate acoustic imaging results are realized in the reverberant chamber space with strong reverberation ( T 20 =174.30 ms). Experiments demonstrate the validation of the proposed SF-MCA method. The acoustic imaging obtained by the proposed SF-MAC dereverberation model is far superior to the acoustic imaging that treats the reverberation as the general Gaussian noise.
Jointly determining the point sources and obstacle from Cauchy data

Abstract:A numerical method is developed for recovering both the source locations and the obstacle from the scattered Cauchy data of the time-harmonic acoustic field. First of all, the incident and scattered components are decomposed from the coupled Cauchy data by the representation of the single-layer potentials and the solution to the resulting linear integral system. As a consequence of this decomposition, the original problem of joint inversion is reformulated into two decoupled subproblems: an inverse source problem and an inverse obstacle scattering problem. Then, two sampling-type schemes are proposed to recover the shape of the obstacle and the source locations, respectively. The sampling methods rely on the specific indicator functions defined on target-oriented probing domains of circular shape. The error estimates of the decoupling procedure are established and the asymptotic behaviors of the indicator functions are analyzed. Extensive numerical experiments are also conducted to verify the performance of the sampling schemes.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form f(x)g(t) and f(x1, x2, t)h(x3), where g(t) and h(x3) are given and x = (x1, x2, x3) is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variables. For moving point sources radiating periodic signals, the data recorded at four receivers are prove sufficient to uniquely recover the orbit function. Simultaneous determination of embedded obstacles and source terms was verified in an inhomogeneous background medium using the observation data of infinite time period. Our approach depends heavily on the Laplace transform.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the inverse source problem of locating multiple multipolar sources from boundary measurements for the Helmholtz equation. We develop simple and effective sampling schemes for location acquisition of the sources with a single wavenumber. Our algorithms are based on some novel indicator functions whose indicating behaviors could be used to locate multiple multipolar sources. The inversion schemes are totally "direct" in the sense that only simple integral calculations are involved in evaluating the indicator functions. Rigorous mathematical justifications are provided and extensive numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and efficiency of the proposed methods.

Abstract:Acoustic imaging is an important technique for sound source identification which is widely used in noise control and fault detection. It can be described as a method for reconstructing the amplitude and phase distribution of an acoustic field in a given plane. When the size of radiating object is huge and measurement environment is noisy, accuracy and efficiency of acoustic imaging algorithm deteriorate easily. In this paper, a novel computational framework is investigated to simplify the algorithm and balance computation speed with accuracy. It converts acoustic imaging into an inverse problem and then divides this problem into two parts including forward model and denoising model. This computation framework is based on the alternating direction method of multipliers, which makes parallel implementation and distributed optimization possible, especially for large scale measurements. It is assumed that the acoustic field is composed of a cluster of monopole sources and the equivalent source method is taken to solve the acoustic inverse problem. Both <math>L2</math>-norm penalization based on the minimal energy assumption and <math>Lp</math>-norm (<math>0</math>) penalization based on the sparsity hypothesis are taken in this framework. Thus, the regularization parameter in the algorithm, which balances the standard least square error and the norm of the source solution, can be coupled with some pre-existing methods incluing L-curve, GCV and Bayesian strategies. Different regularization parameters are proposed and the comparison is made in this paper. The proposed method provides a general and convenient method for different type of sound source priors and it is validated with an experiment.

Abstract:This work reports a super-resolution acoustic imaging method that inverses source distribution, strength, and structure in three-dimensional space. The nonlinear coupling process between a low-frequency sound field and a high-frequency plane wave is endowed to break the resolution limit. The reconstructed results for different source strengths and frequencies demonstrate the capability of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is very suitable for low-frequency source imaging, which could strengthen the super-resolution analysis capability of acoustic imaging tests and, consequently, lead to deepened physical insights into various propulsion systems in underwater and aerospace systems.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of recovering a parameter appearing in all levels in a second-order hyperbolic equation from a single boundary measurement. The model is motivated from applications in photoacoustic tomography when one seeks to recover both the wave speed and the initial ultrasound pressure from a single ultrasound signal. In particular, our result shows that the ratio of the initial ultrasound pressure and the wave speed squared uniquely determines both of them respectively.

Abstract:This work is concerned with an inverse scattering problem of determining unknown scatterers from time-dependent acoustic measurements. A novel time-domain direct sampling method is developed to efficiently determine both the locations and shapes of inhomogeneous media. In particular, our approach is very easy to implement since only cheap space-time integrations are involved in the evaluation of the imaging functionals. Based on the Fourier-Laplace transform, we establish an inherent connection between the time-domain and frequency-domain direct sampling method. Moreover, rigorous theoretical justifications and numerical experiments are provided to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:In the reconstruction process of sound waves in a 3D stratified waveguide, a key technique is to effectively reduce the huge computational demand. In this work, we propose an efficient and simple multilevel reconstruction method to help locate the accurate position of a point source in a stratified ocean. The proposed method can be viewed as a direct sampling method since no solutions of optimizations or linear systems are involved. The novel method exhibits several strengths: fast convergence, robustness against noise, advantages in computational complexity and applicability for a very small number of receivers.

Abstract:An iterative/recursive algorithm is studied for recovering unknown sources of acoustic field with multifrequency measurement data. Under additional regularity assumptions on source functions, the first convergence result toward multifrequency inverse source problems is obtained by assuming the background medium is homogeneous and the measurement data is noise-free. Error estimates are also provided when the observation data is contaminated by noise. Numerical examples verify the reliability and efficiency of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this article, we study a 3-D acoustic imaging algorithm that can reconstruct compressibility, attenuation, and density simultaneously based on the contrast source inversion (CSI) method. This is a nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. To deal with the nonlinearity, we introduce two asymmetrical contrast sources that are functions of the contrasts and the total field. In this case, the scattered field and the total field are linear with the two contrast sources, and the two contrast sources are also linear with the two contrasts; thus, the nonlinearity is partially alleviated. To mitigate the ill-posedness of this inverse problem, we apply a multifrequency, multitransmitter, and multireceiver setting. Besides, to ensure the robustness of the algorithm, two multiplicative regularization terms are introduced as additional constraints. The reconstruction of those acoustic parameters can be achieved by alternately updating the contrast sources and the contrasts from the knowledge of the pressure field. Numerical studies show good reconstruction of compressibility, attenuation, and density of the synthetic thorax model, which validates the feasibility of imaging human thorax using low-frequency ultrasound.
The high resolution sampling methods for acoustic sources from multi-frequency far field patterns at sparse observation directions

Abstract:This work is dedicated to novel uniqueness results and high resolution sampling methods for source support from multi-frequency sparse far field patterns. With a single pair of observation directions $\pm\hat{x}$, we prove that the lines $\{z\in\mathbb R^2|\, \hat{x}\cdot z = \hat{x}\cdot y, \,y\in A_{\hat{x}}\}$ can be determined by multi-frequency far field patterns at the directions $\pm\hat{x}$, where $A_{\hat{x}}$ denotes a set containing the corners of the boundary and points whose normal vector to the boundary is parallel to $\hat{x}$. Furthermore, if the source support is composed of polygons and annuluses, then we prove that the support can be determined by multi-frequency far field patterns at sparse directions. Precisely, the lowest number of the observation directions is given in terms of the number of the corners and the annuluses. Inspired by the uniqueness arguments, we introduce two novel indicators to determine the source support. Numerical examples in two dimensions are presented to show the validity and robustness of the two indicators for reconstructing the boundaries of the source support with a high resolution. The second indicator also shows its powerful ability to determine the unknown source function.

Abstract:In thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography an electromagnetic wave is sent through a medium, heating it and therefore generating an elastic expansion that in turns generates an acoustic wave that is measured outside the medium. The general problem is to recover both the inhomogeneous sound speed and the initial pressure from the boundary measurements of the solution of the acoustic wave equation with a single measurement of the pressure. We show that one can recover both the sound speed and the initial pressure assuming a monocitiy condition on the sound speed that includes the physically interesting case of piecewise constant sound speeds. We also establish a link between this problem and the corresponding transmission eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the inverse problem of the two-dimensional wave equation source term, which arises from the Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data on the boundary. We construct a new integral operator that maps the interior sources to the DAS-type data at the boundary. Due to the noninjectivity and instability of the integral operator, which violates the well posedness of the inverse problem, a minimization problem on a compact convex subset is formulated, and the existence and uniqueness of the minimizer are obtained. Numerical examples for different cases are illustrated.
