Abstract:The aim of the study was to develop, optimize and validate an analytical method for the simultaneous detection and quantification of As species (As (III), dimethylarsinate (DMA), monomethylarsonate (MMA) and As (V)) from various water matrices (drinking water, surface water and groundwater) using the technique of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). The separation of the species was achieved using an Agilent G3154-65002 precolumn, 4.6 mm x 10 mm, and an Agilent G3154-65001 column, 4.6 mm x 150 mm, at ambient temperature. The mobile phase used was 1M NaH2PO4 and 0.1 mM EDTA-2Na solution at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. Linear regression lines were drawn in the range 10-50 µg/L, the coefficients of determination (R2) obtained for each species were higher than 0.99. The quantification limits (LOQ) varied in the range 1.8 µg/L As(V) to 2.0 µg/L As(III), and in the range 3.9 µg/L DMA to 4.1 µg /L MMA for all studied matrices. These limits allow the quantification of As species in drinking water samples, surface water and groundwater at the trace level.

Abstract:<p>Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous element in the environment while its toxicity and chemical properties are highly associated with its chemical form. High quality As speciation data in environmental matrices are thus desirable for understanding its biogeochemistry. Here we present a simple and novel head space-single drop microextraction-spectro-pipette (HS-SDME-SP) method for the on-site measurement of As species in natural waters. Arsine was generated and separated from the sample matrix by borohydride-based hydride generation, which was further extracted into a stable, hanging 5 μL microdroplet on the tip of a spectro-pipette. With the spectro-pipette, the microvolume of extractant is easily handled while gas–liquid absorption, redox and chromogenic reactions and <em>in situ</em> absorbance measurement can be carried out in a single step. The speciation analysis of As(III) and As(V) was achieved by utilizing their different pH requirement for reduction and arsine generation in the hydride generation process. Although the proposed method is a simple sensor based assay, it is sensitive, robust and reliable; the limit of detection (3 × S/N) was 0.1 nM, RSDs for 25 nM As(III) were < 2.0% (n = 10) and results were comparable with the commonly used hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) method and in good agreement with two certified reference materials (surface freshwater and seawater). The proposed method is easy to operate, the device is light and portable (1.1 kg) and is practical for the measurement of trace inorganic As species in the field.</p>

Abstract:Arsenic is one of the most toxic elements present in the environment, especially in water. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a maximum concentration of arsenic in drinkable water of 10 μ g/l (10 ppb). Sensors implementing Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) can detect chemical species at low concentrations. The aim of this study is to compare two kinds of silver-coated SERS substrates for detection and speciation of trace, trivalent and pentavalent, inorganic arsenic compounds. One type of substrate was prepared by a classical thermal evaporation technique, and the second type by an electroless process. The thermally evaporated substrates allowed the detection of As(III) only, at a limit of detection (LOD) of approximately 50 mg/l, whereas As(V) could not be detected at any analyte concentration. The electroless substrates allow one to differentiate As(III) and As(V) with a LOD 1 μ g/l (1 ppb) equal for each valency, below the WHO recommendation. The electroless substrates show a very large sensitivity across up to five orders of magnitude in terms of analyte concentration. Although the SERS intensity shows a nonlinear behavior over this range of concentrations, these preliminary results are encouraging in the framework of the demonstration of trace As SERS sensors in drinkable water.

Abstract:The current paper describes a method for determining As(III) and As(V) concentrations in wastewater samples. The approach is based on the extraction of As(III) from water samples using a non-polar organic solvent in a 10-12 M HCl medium. The extract contains As(III), while the raffinate contains As(V). Distilled water can be used to re-extract As(III) from the organic solvent. ICP-MS was used to analyze As concentrations in the reextract and the raffinate. The average recovery of arsenic by the proposed method is 99.6 %. It was calculated as the sum of As(III) and As(V) concentrations. The collected data demonstrated high repeatability. The standard addition procedure demonstrated the selectivity and accuracy of the employed method. The relative error of recovery of the standard As(III) addition is about 2 %, which is similar to the RSD found under repeatability conditions.

Abstract:Direct determination of arsenic species in real samples is challenging due to their trace concentration and spectral interferences by coexisting ions. Herein, we proposed an ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction (DSPME) procedure for the analyses of the trace inorganic arsenic. The hydrothermally synthesized cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) completely adsorbed both arsenic species within 20 s at the initial arsenic concentration of 100 µg L-1. The detection limit (3 S/m) of the proposed method was found to be 0.5 ± 0.2 and 0.8 ± 0.2 ng L-1 for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The accuracy of the method against the systematic and constant errors was confirmed by the analysis of the Standard Reference Material (SRM) (>95% recovery with <5% RSD). The Student's t-test values were found to be less than the critical Student's t value at a 95% confidence level. The method was successfully employed for the determination of arsenic in food samples.

Abstract:In the present work, a novel and simple detection system for As inorganic species contained in groundwater is presented. To reach the required detection limit, the proposed methodology is based on two steps: first is the transport and preconcentration of the inorganic arsenic species using a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) system and second is the formation of a coloured complex, the absorbance of which is measured. Different parameters related to the membrane composition and the transport kinetics have been studied, and it was found that membranes made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a polymer, and Aliquat 336 as a carrier, ensured efficient arsenic transport when the carrier content was at least 31 % (w/w). The implementation of the designed PIM in a special device that contained only 5 mL of the stripping solution (0.1 M NaCl) allowed As preconcentration from a 100-mL water sample, thus facilitating its detection with the colorimetric method. The new method developed here was validated, and its analytical figures of merit were determined, i.e. limit of detection of 4.5 μg L−1 at 820 nm and a relative standard deviation within the range 8–10 %. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the analysis of different water samples from Catalonia region with naturally occurring As.

Abstract:The accurate determination of arsenic species in waters is still an environmental challenge because of the rapid redox transformation of As. So, a procedure for on-site separation of As(III), As(V), methylarsonic acid, and dimethylarsinic acid in natural waters has been developed. The procedure involves passing a water sample through tandem cation- and anion-exchange resin columns in the field. Selective retention of arsenic species occurs in resin cartridges followed by selective elution. The eluate is collected and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The standard reference material CASS-5 was diluted 10 times and analyzed directly to validate accuracy of measurements, and SLRS-2 was used to validate on-site separation procedure, respectively. The results agreed well with the certified values of standard reference materials. The proposed procedure was applied to the on-site separation of arsenic species from natural waters.

Abstract:The toxic and carcinogenic properties of inorganic and organic arsenic species make their determination in natural water vitally important. Determination of individual inorganic and organic arsenic species is critical because the toxicology, mobility, and adsorptivity vary substantially. Several methods for the speciation of arsenic in groundwater, surface-water, and acid mine drainage sample matrices using field and laboratory techniques are presented. The methods provide quantitative determination of arsenite [As(III)], arsenate [As(V)], monomethylarsonate (MMA), dimethylarsinate (DMA), and roxarsone in 2-8 min at detection limits of less than 1 microg arsenic per liter (microg As L(-1)). All the methods use anion exchange chromatography to separate the arsenic species and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry as an arsenic-specific detector. Different methods were needed because some sample matrices did not have all arsenic species present or were incompatible with particular high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) mobile phases. The bias and variability of the methods were evaluated using total arsenic, As(III), As(V), DMA, and MMA results from more than 100 surface-water, groundwater, and acid mine drainage samples, and reference materials. Concentrations in test samples were as much as 13,000 microg As L(-1) for As(III) and 3700 microg As L(-1) for As(V). Methylated arsenic species were less than 100 microg As L(-1) and were found only in certain surface-water samples, and roxarsone was not detected in any of the water samples tested. The distribution of inorganic arsenic species in the test samples ranged from 0% to 90% As(III). Laboratory-speciation method variability for As(III), As(V), MMA, and DMA in reagent water at 0.5 microg As L(-1) was 8-13% (n=7). Field-speciation method variability for As(III) and As(V) at 1 microg As L(-1) in reagent water was 3-4% (n=3).

Abstract:It is known that arsenic has different toxicological properties dependent upon both its oxidation state for inorganic compounds, as well as the different toxicity levels exhibited for organic arsenic compounds. The field of arsenic speciation analysis has grown rapidly in the recent years, especially with the utilization of chromatographic analysis. Extraction method as sequential extraction combined to microwave assisted digestion were applied to water and sediments samples. This paper describes the essential background and toxicity of arsenic in environment, and more importantly, some currently used chromatographic applications and sample handling procedures necessary to accurately detect arsenic in its various forms. Experiments and work using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry for arsenic speciation of environmental samples are presented in this research.

Abstract:Abstract Toxicity of arsenic compounds depends on the chemical structure as well as the concentration. Thus, separation of the toxic arsenic species should precede the quantification for the accurate toxicity assessment. Ion chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS) has been the most popular method for separation and quantification of toxic arsenic species. However, the method requires complex instrument, elaborate sample preparation, and long analysis time. In this work, toxic inorganic arsenic species in water was separated by the simple solid phase extraction (SPE) using a strong anion-exchange membrane filter, and then the membrane filter was analyzed by femtosecond laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fs-LA-ICP-MS). The pH value of the sample was adjusted to 4 using ammonium hydroxide and phosphoric acid for the complete separation of the toxic inorganic arsenic from the other organic arsenics. The linear dynamic range was from 0.5 to 1000 μg/kg, and the correlation coefficient was 0.99989. The recovery efficiency was 96‐106%. The detection limit of the inorganic arsenic was 0.028 μg/kg. Our results indicate that SPE-fs-LA-ICP-MS provides enough analytical performance to analyze the toxic inorganic arsenic in water at the level of parts per trillion using the simple separation method and the rapid laser ablation sampling.

Abstract:A new ionic liquid modified polymer gel containing methylimidazolium groups (poly(MIA)) is proposed as a sorbent for the separation and enrichment of trace inorganic and organic arsenic species in surface waters. The poly(MIA) was synthesized by chemical modification of polymeric precursor using post-polymerization modification of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate). The composition, structure, morphology, and surface properties of the prepared particles were characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements. Optimization experiments showed that at pH 8, monomethylarsonic acid (MMAs), dimethylarsinic acid (DMAs), and As(V) were completely retained on the poly(MIA), while the sorption of As(III) was insignificant. The desorption experiments revealed that due to the weaker binding of organic arsenic species, selective elution with 1 mol/L acetic acid for MMAs + DMAs, followed by elution with 2 mol/L hydrochloric acid for As(V), ensured their quantitative separation. The adsorption kinetic and mechanism were defined. The analytical procedure for As(III), As(V), MMAs, and DMAs determination in surface waters was developed and validated through the analysis of certified reference material.

Abstract:A highly efficient separation and pre-concentration method for arsenic species determination, based on ionic liquid (IL) dispersive microextraction technique implemented in a flow analysis system, is proposed. Highly selective separation of arsenite species [As(III)] was achieved by chelation with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) followed by dispersion with 40 mg of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C(8)mim][PF(6)]) IL. Analyte extraction, retention and separation of IL phase were achieved with a packed microcolumn and As(III) was determined in eluent solution by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). Concentration of As(V) was deduced by the difference between total inorganic arsenic and As(III). Thus, determination of total arsenic was performed by previous degradation of organo-arsenic species, followed by a reduction. Under optimal conditions, As(III) extraction efficiency was 100% and a sensitivity enhancement factor of 46 was obtained with only 4.0 ml of sample The method was successfully applied for arsenic speciation studies in mono-varietal wines.
Development and validation of a simple and robust method for arsenic speciation in human urine using HPLC/ICP-MS.

Abstract:In order to better distinguish the different toxic inorganic and organic forms of arsenic (As) exposure in individuals, we have developed and validated a simple and robust analytical method for determining the following six As species in human urine: arsenous (III) acid (As-III), As (V) acid, monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid, arsenobetaine (AsB), and arsenocholine. In this method, human urine is diluted using a pH 5.8 buffer, separation is performed using an anion exchange column with isocratic HPLC, and detection is achieved using inductively coupled plasma-MS. The method uses a single mobile phase consisting of low concentrations of both phosphate buffer (5 mM) and ammonium nitrate salt (5 mM) at pH 9.0; this minimizes the column equilibration time and overcomes challenges with separation between AsB and As-III. In addition, As-III oxidation is prevented by degassing the sample preparation buffer at pH 5.8, degassing the mobile phase online at pH 9.0, and by the use of low temperature (-70 °C) and flip-cap airtight tubes for long term storage of samples. The method was validated using externally provided reference samples. Results were in agreement with target values at varying concentrations and successfully passed external performance test criteria. Internal QC samples were prepared and repeatedly analyzed to assess the method's long-term precision, and further analyses were completed on anonymous donor urine to assess the quality of the method's baseline separation. Results from analyses of external reference samples agreed with target values at varying concentrations, and results from precision studies yielded absolute CV values of 3-14% and recovery from 82 to 115% for the six As species. Analysis of anonymous donor urine confirmed the well-resolved baseline separation capabilities of the method for real participant samples.

Abstract:This work describes the method of a selective hydride generation-cryotrapping (HG-CT) coupled to an extremely sensitive but simple in-house assembled and designed atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) instrument for determination of toxicologically important As species. Here, an advanced flame-in-gas-shield atomizer (FIGS) was interfaced to HG-CT and its performance was compared to a standard miniature diffusion flame (MDF) atomizer. A significant improvement both in sensitivity and baseline noise was found that was reflected in improved (4 times) limits of detection (LODs). The yielded LODs with the FIGS atomizer were 0.44, 0.74, 0.15, 0.17 and 0.67 ng L(-1) for arsenite, total inorganic, mono-, dimethylated As and trimethylarsine oxide, respectively. Moreover, the sensitivities with FIGS and MDF were equal for all As species, allowing for the possibility of single species standardization with arsenate standard for accurate quantification of all other As species. The accuracy of HG-CT-AFS with FIGS was verified by speciation analysis in two samples of bottled drinking water and certified reference materials, NRC CASS-5 (nearshore seawater) and SLRS-5 (river water) that contain traces of methylated As species. As speciation was in agreement with results previously reported and sums of all quantified species corresponded with the certified total As. The feasibility of HG-CT-AFS with FIGS was also demonstrated by the speciation analysis in microsamples of exfoliated bladder epithelial cells isolated from human urine. The results for the sums of trivalent and pentavalent As species corresponded well with the reference results obtained by HG-CT-ICPMS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry).

Abstract:We describe a simple and efficient method for solid phase extraction and speciation of trace quantities of arsenic. It is based on the use of functionalized aluminum oxide nanoparticles and does not require any oxidation or reduction steps. The experimental parameters affecting extraction and quantitation were optimized using fractional factorial design methods. Adsorbed arsenic was eluted from the sorbent with 1 M hydrochloric acid and determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Preconcentration factors up to 750 were achieved depending on the sample volume. Studies on potential interferences by various anions and cations showed the method to be highly selective. Under optimum conditions, the calibration plots are linear in the 5.0 to 280 ng L−1 and 8.0 to 260 ng L−1 concentration ranges for As(III) and total arsenic, respectively. The detection limits (calculated for S/N ratios of 3) are 1.81 and 1.97 ng L−1 for As(III) and total arsenic, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination and speciation of arsenic in (spiked) environmental, food and biological samples and gave good recoveries. The method was validated using a certified geological reference material.Graphical AbstractNovel functionalized Al2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized and used for speciation and determination of arsenic in different samples.
