Abstract:The temperature‐responsive pesticide delivery microcapsule, based on maleic anhydride‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals‐stabilized Pickering emulsion, exhibited a high encapsulation rate and drug loading efficiency. Moreover, it demonstrated significant advantages over commercially available water‐dispersed particles of imidacloprid in terms of leaf surface diffusion and retention. The efficient use of pesticides is conducive to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, and pesticide transport carriers can enhance the utilization value of pesticides. However, design flaws in many pesticide carriers have resulted in numerous environmental and toxicity problems. Therefore, this paper proposed a method for synthesizing pesticide microcapsules using Pickering emulsion templates stabilized by maleic anhydride‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals‐g‐poly (methyl methacrylate) (MACNCs‐g‐MMA), viz., simple radical polymerization of maleic anhydride‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals with methyl methacrylate in Pickering emulsion. The structure and morphology of microcapsules were characterized via the FT‐IR, XRD, TG‐DTG, and SEM techniques. The imidacloprid‐loaded MACNCs‐g‐MMA (IMI@MACNCs‐g‐MMA) presented a high encapsulation efficiency (~94.13%) and drug loading efficiency (~24.00%). The release behavior was affected by temperature, viz., higher temperature promoted the release of IMI. Regarding the spread and retention on the leaf surface, the IMI@MACNCs‐g‐MMA demonstrated significant advantages over commercial IMI water‐dispersible granules (CG) (36.9° vs. 104.9° for contact angle, 14.3 vs. 30.0 mg cm−2 for retention). This study provides a promising pesticide formula for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDBinary functional monomers, allyl--cyclodextrin (allyl--CD) and methacrylic acid (MAA) or allyl--CD and acrylonitrile (AN), were exploited in a fabrication of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for selective recognition and large enrichment of pirimicarb from aqueous media. RESULTSSpecial attention was paid to the computational simulation of the imprinting molecular and functional monomers. The morphological characteristics of MIPs made of allyl--CD and MAA (M-MAA) were characterised by scanning electron microscopy. The effect of binding capacity of MAA-linked allyl--CD MIPs (M-MAA) demonstrated higher efficiency than that of AN-linked allyl--CD MIPs (M-AN) when tested in binding specificity. Finally, M-MAA was chosen to run through molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) to analyse the spiked fresh leafy vegetables of pirimicarb. Synthesis, Characterization, and Pesticidal Activity of Emamectin Benzoate Nanoformulations Against Phenacoccus Solenopsis Tinsley (hemiptera: Pseudococcidae)

Abstract:Using nanotechnology to develop new formulations of pesticides is considered a possible option in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and photostability of pesticides under various climatic conditions. In the present study, two novel nanoformulations (NFs) were successfully prepared based on nano-delivery systems for emamectin benzoate (EMB) by loading it on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SNPs) as carriers through a freeze-drying method. The synthesized nanoformulations were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results showed that SNPs and CNCs had a loading efficiency of 43.31% and 15.04% (w/w) for EMB, respectively, and could effectively protect EMB from photolysis under UV radiation. The LC50 values for EMB + SNPs, EMB + CNCs, and EMB commercial formulation against Phenacoccus solenopsis were 0.01, 0.05, and 0.31 μg/mL, respectively, indicating that both NFs were more effective than the EMB commercial formulation. This work seeks to develop new nano-carriers for potential applications of pesticides in plant protection, which will reduce the recommended dose of pesticides and thereby decrease the amount of pesticide residue in food and the environment.

Abstract:Using smart nanopesticide formulations based on nanomaterials can offer promising potential applications for decreasing pesticide residues and their effects on human health and the environment. In this study, a novel nanoformulation (NF) of thiamethoxam (TMX) was fabricated using the solvent evaporation method through loading TMX on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the carrier. The synthesized TMX-CNCs was investigated through different techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed that the loading efficiency and entrapment efficiency were 18.7% and 83.7 ± 1.8% for TMX, respectively. The prepared nanoformulation (TMX-CNCs) had a width of 7–14 nm and a length of 85–214 nm with a zeta potential of −23.6 ± 0.3 mV. The drug release behavior study exhibited that the release of TMX from TMX-loaded CNCs was good and sustained. Furthermore, bioassay results showed that the insecticidal activity of TMX-CNCs against Phenacoccus solenopsis was significantly superior to that of the technical and commercial formulation, as indicated by the lower LC50 value. The results indicate that the TMX nanoformulation has great potential for application in agriculture for pest control.

Abstract:Abstract Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), one of the most common causes of infections, has been traditionally recognized as a nosocomial pathogen. However, in recent years, its epidemiology has radically changed, being now observed even more frequently in the community, and accounting for > 50% of staphylococcal infections in the US outpatient setting. Community-acquired (CA)-MRSA strains typically cause infections among otherwise healthy individuals, with risk factors differing from those of nosocomial MRSA. The clinical manifestations may range from a furuncle to life-threatening infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis and pneumonia. The antibiotic treatment of these infections may also differ because CA-MRSA strains often retain susceptibility to antimicrobials other than glycopeptides and newer agents. Moreover, the production of toxins, such as the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), should influence the antibiotic choice because in these cases the use of a combination therapy with antimicrobial agents able to decrease toxin production is suggested. There are still many unanswered key questions regarding the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of CA-MRSA infections. This article reviews current knowledge of CA-MRSA.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of pesticides has presented various advantages in the ecological environment, food safety, and agricultural sustainability. Pesticide microcapsule could significantly improve the pesticide utilization ratio, and thus, we prepared a sustained‐release microcapsule from cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) stabilized Pickering emulsion template. The NaCl was added to overcome the strong electrostatic repulsion among CNCs for forming a stable oil‐in‐water (O/W) CNCs‐based Pickering emulsion template, followed by crosslinking with hexamethylene diisocyanate on the interface. UV–vis and zeta‐potential were used to characterize the as‐prepared Pickering emulsion, and the stability and emulsion fraction were calculated. Results indicated that NaCl contributed to the stability of Pickering emulsion, even at a low concentration. The obtained CNCs‐based microcapsule was characterized by FT‐IR, XRD, SEM, TG‐DTG, and three‐phase contact angles. The microcapsule presented an encapsulation efficiency of 96.76% and sustained release of the imidacloprid for more than 82 h. Results indicated the potential for loading and sustained release of imidacloprid, which is beneficial to the environment, food, and agriculture.

Abstract:The stimuli-responsive degradation of coating layer on pesticide-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) can realize on-demand release of pesticides. Herein, we report the simultaneously coating of imidacloprid (IMI)-loaded MSNs with phase change materials (PCMs) and polydopamine (PDA) to realize NIR-triggered release of IMI. To balance good thermal stability and sensitive thermal responsiveness, myristyl alcohol (MA) was selected as optimal PCM for IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA nanocomposites. The successful preparation of IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA nanocomposites was confirmed by FT-IR, small angle XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA and BET. MSNs@MA-PDA nanocomposites exhibited concentration and irradiation power dependent stable photothermal conversion ability, with the maximum temperature increase of 23.3 ℃ (808 nm, 2 W/cm2, 300 μg/mL). The drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of IMI were 30.1% and 43.0%, respectively. The cumulative release of IMI from IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA was increased by ∼30% when the temperature was increased from 25 ℃ to 38 ℃. Meanwhile, initial burst release of IMI from MSNs was inhibited. Finally, in vivo insecticidal activity of IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA was evaluated on Aphis craccivora Koch. The LC50 value was decreased from 5.01 mg/L to 3.73 mg/L, resulted from photothermal-boosted release of IMI. Our facile and effective method to prepare MSNs-based photothermal-responsive pesticide delivery system can be generalized to prepare other nanomaterials-based delivery systems for efficient and eco-friendly pesticide-control in agriculture.

Abstract:Controlled pesticide delivery systems offer many distinctive advantages over conventional pesticide formulations. In this work, degradable poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-tannic acid (TA) microgels and multifunctional PDA@PNIPAM-TA nanocomposites were prepared in a high-gravity rotating packed bed reactor (RPB) for smart pesticide delivery and release. The as-prepared microgels and nanocomposites showed reversible temperature-dependent swelling/deswelling behavior and irreversible pH-induced degradation. A dynamic contact angle test suggested that the introduction of TA and PDA into the PNIPAM matrix could enhance foliar adhesion and deposition efficiency. The nanocomposites were further used for the encapsulation and delivery of imidacloprid (IMI) to protect it from rapid photolysis and improve its pest-control efficiency. Their thermoresponsive behavior as well as pesticide loading capacity could be tuned by tailoring the PNIPAM-TA shell thickness, which could be varied by the NIPAM amount. The release rate of IMI from the core/shell nanocomposites was positively correlated with environmental temperature and near-infrared (NIR) light, which was adaptive to the positive temperature-dependent toxicity correlation of IMI and the increasing trend of pests under high temperature. The cumulative release of IMI was 23.5% at 25 °C, while it was 81.2% at 40 °C after 24 h of incubation, and the release rate was greatly enhanced under NIR irradiation. The results indicated that the facile control of pesticide release could be realized by regulating environmental conditions. This work also provides an idea for using high-gravity technology to conveniently construct a smart, effective, and environmentally friendly pesticide delivery system for sustainable crop protection.

Abstract:The use of nanomaterials and nanotechnology to construct a smart pesticide delivery system with target-oriented and controlled-release functions is important to increase the effective utilization rate and minimize environmental residue pollution. A temperature-dependent delivery system can modulate the release of pesticide with temperature to improve the efficacy and precision targeting. A series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based nanogels with high deformability and tunable structure were successfully constructed for smart pesticide delivery and effective pest control. A lambda-cyhalothrin (LC)-loaded Pickering emulsion (LC@TNPE) with a stable gel-like network structure was further formed by the temperature-dependent nanogel to encapsule the pesticide. The foliar wettability, photostability, and controlled-release property of LC@TNPE were effectively enhanced compared to the commercial formulation because of the encapsulation and stabilization of nanogel. The release rate of LC positively correlated with temperature changes and thereby adapted to the trend of pest population increase at higher temperature. The LC@TNPE displayed improved control efficacy on multiple target pests including Plutella xylostella, Aphis gossypii, and Pieris rapae compared with the commercial suspension concentrate and microcapsule suspension, and it showed marked efficacy to control Pieris rapae for an extended duration even at a 40% reduced dosage. Furthermore, the safety was evaluated systematically on cells in vitro and with a nontarget organism. Studies confirmed that the system was relatively safe for HepG2 cells and aquatic organism zebrafish. This research provides an insight into creating an efficient and environmentally friendly pesticide nanoformulation for sustainable agriculture production.

Abstract:Controlled pesticide release in response to environmental stimuli by encapsulating pesticide in carrier is a feasible approach to improve the effective utilization rate. Here, a temperature-responsive release microcapsule loaded with chlorpyrifos () was prepared from n-hexadecane-in-water emulsions via interfacial polymerization. The microcapsule was consisted of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) as the shell wall material and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as the crosslinker. The prepared had pesticide-loading efficiency (33.1 wt%) and favorable adhesion on the surface of cucumber and peanut foliage compared with conventional formulation. Additionally, could protect chlorpyrifos against photodegradation effectively. The in vitro release test showed that microcapsule had adjustable controlled-release characteristics with the change in temperature based on phase transition of the n-hexadecane core. Bioassay studies showed that control efficacy of microcapsule against P. xylostella was positively correlated with temperature because of temperature-induced changes in release rate. The acute toxicity of to zebrafish was reduced more than 5-fold compared with that of CPF technical. These results indicated that the microcapsule release system has great potential in the development of an effective and environmentally friendly pesticide formulation.

Stimuli-responsive Ca-alginate-based photothermal system with enhanced foliar adhesion for controlled pesticide release

Abstract:For minimizing volatilization and leaching of pesticides, and enhancing their residence time on crop surfaces, we synthesized and characterized a novel intelligent pesticide delivery system. Therein, imidacloprid (IMI) was adsorbed by polydopamine modified kaolin (PK) with high adsorption property through hydrogen bonds. Ca-alginate was used as a structural matrix of the system and a protective shell to hinder the pesticide burst release from PK, and endowed the system with unique pH-sensitive property for IMI release. The amino silicone oil (ASO) coating could bind with the waxy layer of crop leaves by the theory of "similarity-intermiscibility", which increased the adhesion of composite on crop leaves. Moreover, by the excellent light-sensitive property of detonation nanodiamond (DND) and temperature-responsive performance of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), the release of IMI from the functional system could be adjusted by sunlight. Besides, the composite displayed high control efficacy. This novel composite can promote the targeting ability and utilization efficiency of pesticides, thus having a huge potential application prospect in agriculture.
Regenerated cellulose-stabilized pickering emulsion for sustained release of Imidacloprid

Abstract:The sustained release of pesticides has been widely studied because of the advantages in duration of application, effective utilization, and environmental protection but failed in hydrophobic pesticides. Pickering emulsions that use solid particles as a stabilizer could solve the issues. In the present study, microcrystalline cellulose was pretreated to obtain cellulose solution and further used to load imidacloprid (IM) via the Pickering emulsion route. The resultant products were characterized by FT-IR, TG, XRD, and POM techniques. Results indicated crystal transition from cellulose I to cellulose II in the process of preparing Pickering emulsions. The regenerated cellulose could stabilize the Pickering emulsion with different oil–water volume ratios, and the resultant emulsions could load IM and remain stable for more than 30 days. The loading and encapsulation efficiency values were in the range of 6.50–9.27% and 11.90–13.92%, respectively. Moreover, the IM-loaded emulsions presented a sustained release for more than 120 h along with Fickian diffusion. The simulated release study in saline solutions manifested the effect of electrostatic interaction, and the release study presented a sustained-release performance in water and NaCl solution.

Abstract:The low utilization efficiency of pesticides poses a significant challenge to the sustainable development of agriculture. The nanocapsule-based pesticide delivery systems combine the advantages of nanotechnology and advanced materials to achieve on-demand and accurately targeted release. Herein, a facile and universal strategy was used to fabricate photosensitive pesticide nanocapsules using a versatile imine polymer derived from cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and ε-poly-L-lysine (PLL). Characterization results demonstrated that the nanocapsules prepared under optimal conditions exhibited uniform sizes (200–400 nm) and high encapsulation efficiency (>90 %). Photodegradation experiments revealed a significant increase of half-lives (7.21–55.57 times) under UV irradiation for the different pesticide nanocapsules. Furthermore, the pesticide nanocapsules demonstrated a high biological activity and excellent physicochemical properties, including pH-responsive release, maximum retention, and rain erosion resistance. The results of the mechanistic studies on the increased biological activity indicated that the nanocapsules could be adsorbed on the surface of target pathogenic cells and then released CIN and PLL, destroying the integrity of the cell membrane, and synergistically and effectively eradicating the pathogen with pesticide. Additionally, nanocapsules exhibited lower toxicity to zebrafish and genetic toxicity to Vicia faba than pesticide technical. Therefore, stimuli-responsive nanocapsules based on imide polymer have broad application prospects in the field of pesticides.

Abstract:Pesticides play a crucial role in securing food production, their safety usage remains a pressing concern. Traditional pesticide formulations have been scrutinized for their inefficiency, environmental hazards, and negative impacts on human health. Here, sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (sCNC) were utilized to stabilize molten lambda-cyhalothrin (LC), forming stable Pickering emulsions via high-pressure homogenization (HPH). This process was followed by the generation of microcapsules through interfacial polymerization, a method that entirely forgoes the use of surfactants and organic solvents. The synthesized microcapsules showcased a size ranging from 250 to 1000 nm, with an impressive LC encapsulation efficiency of up to 99.29 %. These microcapsules maintained excellent stability, prolonging pest control duration in field applications, and exhibited reduced toxicity to zebrafish. A particularly groundbreaking discovery was the ability of microcapsules to mitigate skin irritation, a benefit previously unexplored in LC microencapsulation. Furthermore, these microcapsules demonstrated significant degradation within 14 days post-application, effectively minimizing prolonged pesticide residue on crops. This study highlights the eco-friendly production of microcapsules and their capacity to diminish the negative impacts associated with pesticide application. It paves the way for the wider implementation of encapsulation technologies in pesticides and offers critical insights into the creation of sustainable, safe, and effective pesticide formulations.

Abstract:Chitosan and sodium lignosulfonate are alternately deposited on the interface of alkaline lignin‐based Pickering emulsions through electrostatic interaction, thus forming biomass‐based microcapsules with tunable shell. In addition to improving the stability, chitosan and lignin also endow the microcapsules with pH/laccase‐responsive properties. Therefore, the microcapsules have great potential for the protection and controlled release of photosensitive drugs, e.g., avermectin. The extremely low utilization efficiency of pesticides has driven people to develop low‐cost, sustainable, and smart delivery systems. Pickering emulsion (PE) derived from biomass is an attractive candidate. However, the stability of PE is insufficient, and pesticide release from PE can be hardly tuned. Herein, a facile in situ PE modification strategy to construct a stable and high‐performance pesticide delivery system from biomass resources is reported. In this process, PE stabilized by alkali lignin nanoparticles is initially prepared, and subsequently, opposite‐charged chitosan (CH), and sodium lignosulfonate (SL) are alternatively deposited onto the PE interface through layer‐by‐layer assembly to form a microcapsule system (CH+SL)n@PE. The resulting biomass‐based microcapsules show improved stability, high encapsulation efficiency, and super UV protection to avermectin (AVM), a hydrophobic and photo‐sensitive pesticide. Furthermore, the shell thickness of microcapsules can be finely tuned by controlling the deposited CH+SL layers, which enable (CH+SL)n@PE to have adjustable release behaviors. (CH+SL)20@PE prolongs the half‐life of AVM under UV irradiation by 5.0‐fold. Moreover, (CH+SL)n@PE exhibits pH and laccase dual responsiveness, which is beneficial to the targeted release of AVM in vivo. Therefore, the current PE modification strategy can provide an eco‐friendly, low‐cost, and smart system for precise delivery of pesticides.

Abstract:It is highly desirable to construct stimuli-responsive nanocarriers for improving pesticides targeting and preventing the pesticides premature release. In this study, five new amphiphilic polymer emulsifiers with stimuli-responsive properties were designed and prepared via esterifying ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer (EMA) with straight chain alkyl alcohols (including n-octanol, n-decanol, n-dodecanol, n-tetradecanol, and n-hexadecanol), followed by ionizing the esterification products. The alkyl ester side groups in the polymer structure gave the emulsifiers multiple characteristics, including adjustable amphiphilicity, affinity to pesticide, ability to form micelle in water, cleavable dynamic covalent ester linkages, and the possibility of temperature-induced phase transition. With these emulsifiers, especially for the one with dodecyl ester side groups (defined as HEMA-C 12 ), lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was fabricated into the nanoemulsion with nanosized particles (71.1 nm) via the phase inversion emulsification process. HEMA-C 12 could also emulsify other hydrophobic pesticides, including avermectin, cyhalothrin, and bifenthrin , into nanoemulsions. The obtained LC nanoemulsion exhibited a series of advantages, including exceptional encapsulation efficiency (86.06%), high drug loading (52.10%), high stability towards shearing, storage and dilution, and high wettability, retention and adhesion to different leaves. In particular, the releasing of LC from the nanoparticles could be triggered by multidimensional stimuli, including pH, temperature, and esterase. The changes in structure and the stabilizing effect of HEMA-C 12 under various stimuli were investigated to understand the releasing mechanism. Finally, the releasing profiles were fitted with different kinetic models to provide insights into the releasing behaviors. The releasing curves in the presence and absence of esterase conformed to the Logistic model, except for that at the benchmark condition (pH 7.0 and 25 oC), which was controlled by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model and followed Fickian diffusion. Inspired by the rational-designed emulsifiers, a wide variety of novel polymer emulsifiers are expected to be developed for the construction of promising nanopesticide systems.

Abstract:A preliminary note on an outbreak of dengue which occurred in the city of Ribeirão Preto, State of S. Paulo, Brazil, from November 1990 to March 1991, is given. One case of Level II Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever/Dengue Shock Syndrome (DHF/DSS) and two deaths associated with dengue related shock are described. Clinicians and epidemiologists are alerted to the possibility of sporadic DHF/DSS cases during outbreaks of classical dengue in formerly free areas.
Application of the photothermal-responsive gelatin-based microspheres for controlled release of imidacloprid by helix-coil structural transition mechanism

Abstract:Intelligent controlled release systems (ICRS) are recognized as a feasible and economical way for the highly efficient utilization of agrochemicals. In this work, we developed an intelligent photothermal-responsively controlled-release pesticide particle (IYGCP) based on imidacloprid (IMI, a model pesticide), yeast biochar (YB, adsorbent and photothermal material), gelatin (GE, temperature-responsive polymer), and Ca-alginate (CA, microsphere matrix). Therein, YB with high adsorption property and photothermal conversion capacity was used as a carrier of IMI to avoid the loss of active ingredients, and as an agent to endow the IYGCP platform with unique photothermal-responsive performance. After IMI loading, IMI/YB was scattered and anchored in CA/GE semi-interpenetrating hydrogels by the chelation of sodium alginate and Ca2+. Upon irradiation under simulated sunlight, YB with satisfactory photothermal conversion efficiency can effectively transfer solar energy into thermal energy, induing a free helix-coil structural transition of the un-crossed GE polymers, thereby resulting in changes in microstructure of hydrogel spheres and further enabling a controlled release of IMI encapsulated in the IYGCP. Besides, the composite displayed high control efficacy on corn borers. Consequently, this photothermal-responsive gelatin-based microsphere shows a bright prospect for controlling the release and loss of pesticides.
