Abstract:The adverse effects resulting from off -target pesticide application pose significant risks to both ecosystems and public health. Therefore, developing a pesticide delivery system that is straightforward, effective, and devoid of secondary pollution is crucial for environmental safety. Herein, self -assembled crystalline materials involved pyrimethanil (PYR) and organic acids were constructed by crystal engineering. These materials allowed for direct manipulation of the physicochemical properties and environmental fate of PYR by the building modules. The melting point of PYR was increased from 96.19 degrees C to 206.69 degrees C. The photostability and volatile stability were improved by 3.85 -fold and 297 -fold, respectively. Afterwards, these crystalline materials were prepared as nano cocrystal suspensions (NCSs) in water by the one -pot method. The PYR NCSs exhibited potent bioactivity against Botrytis cinerea and demonstrated slow -release behavior. Upon foliar spraying, the PYR NCSs exhibited desirable foliar wettability with a contact angle lower than 36 degrees . By limiting leaching into the soil and reducing environmental pesticide exposure, PYR NCS ensured the safety of both earthworms and plants. The structure - property relationships of PYR NCSs were elucidated through intermolecular interaction analysis and theoretical calculations. Overall, the NCSs constructed by the supramolecular chemistry strategy are characterized by the simple preparation, high bioactivity, stability, no carrier, slow -release, and minimal environmental risk, which offers insight for improving the utilization and sustainable management of pesticides.

Abstract:The low utilization efficiency of pesticides poses a significant challenge to the sustainable development of agriculture. The nanocapsule-based pesticide delivery systems combine the advantages of nanotechnology and advanced materials to achieve on-demand and accurately targeted release. Herein, a facile and universal strategy was used to fabricate photosensitive pesticide nanocapsules using a versatile imine polymer derived from cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and ε-poly-L-lysine (PLL). Characterization results demonstrated that the nanocapsules prepared under optimal conditions exhibited uniform sizes (200–400 nm) and high encapsulation efficiency (>90 %). Photodegradation experiments revealed a significant increase of half-lives (7.21–55.57 times) under UV irradiation for the different pesticide nanocapsules. Furthermore, the pesticide nanocapsules demonstrated a high biological activity and excellent physicochemical properties, including pH-responsive release, maximum retention, and rain erosion resistance. The results of the mechanistic studies on the increased biological activity indicated that the nanocapsules could be adsorbed on the surface of target pathogenic cells and then released CIN and PLL, destroying the integrity of the cell membrane, and synergistically and effectively eradicating the pathogen with pesticide. Additionally, nanocapsules exhibited lower toxicity to zebrafish and genetic toxicity to Vicia faba than pesticide technical. Therefore, stimuli-responsive nanocapsules based on imide polymer have broad application prospects in the field of pesticides.

Abstract:The stimuli-responsive degradation of coating layer on pesticide-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) can realize on-demand release of pesticides. Herein, we report the simultaneously coating of imidacloprid (IMI)-loaded MSNs with phase change materials (PCMs) and polydopamine (PDA) to realize NIR-triggered release of IMI. To balance good thermal stability and sensitive thermal responsiveness, myristyl alcohol (MA) was selected as optimal PCM for IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA nanocomposites. The successful preparation of IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA nanocomposites was confirmed by FT-IR, small angle XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA and BET. MSNs@MA-PDA nanocomposites exhibited concentration and irradiation power dependent stable photothermal conversion ability, with the maximum temperature increase of 23.3 ℃ (808 nm, 2 W/cm2, 300 μg/mL). The drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of IMI were 30.1% and 43.0%, respectively. The cumulative release of IMI from IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA was increased by ∼30% when the temperature was increased from 25 ℃ to 38 ℃. Meanwhile, initial burst release of IMI from MSNs was inhibited. Finally, in vivo insecticidal activity of IMI@MSNs@MA-PDA was evaluated on Aphis craccivora Koch. The LC50 value was decreased from 5.01 mg/L to 3.73 mg/L, resulted from photothermal-boosted release of IMI. Our facile and effective method to prepare MSNs-based photothermal-responsive pesticide delivery system can be generalized to prepare other nanomaterials-based delivery systems for efficient and eco-friendly pesticide-control in agriculture.

Abstract:Complete pesticide nanocapsules were readily prepared through an “on site” FeIII-tannic acid (TA) coordination assembly based on oil/water microemulsions stabilized with different types of surfactants and with various pesticides dissolved in the oil phase after only one deposition cycle of Fe3+ and TA. This is a universal strategy suitable for the oil/water microemulsions stabilized with different types of surfactants and independent of the addition sequence of Fe3+ and TA. Surprisingly, the smart pesticide nanocapsules showed multidimensional on-demand controlled pesticide release (including acidic pH, alkaline pH, glutathione, ascorbic acid, H2O2, phosphate, phytic acid, and sunlight) as well as excellent resistance to rainwater erosion and ultraviolet photolysis. The examples of ascorbic acid- and phytic acid-triggered controlled release of loaded cargos (including pesticides or drugs) were reported for the first time, respectively. It is the first time that the 8 types of stimuli were integrated into one smart nanovehicle for the on-demand controlled release of encapsulated cargos (including pesticides and drugs). The multidimensional stimuli were closely relevant to the physiological and natural environments of crop plants, and the FeIII-TA wall materials were ultimately degraded in the crop plants. The nanocapsules loaded with the fungicide tebuconazole showed high fungicidal efficacy against fungi Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium graminearum, and the nanocapsules loaded with the insecticide avermectin have high insecticidal efficacy against the pests Plutella xylostella, in comparison with conventional pesticide formulations. The facile, safe, controlled-release, and degradable pesticide nanocapsules show great application prospects in sustainable ecological agriculture.

Abstract:Controlled pesticide delivery systems offer many distinctive advantages over conventional pesticide formulations. In this work, degradable poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-tannic acid (TA) microgels and multifunctional PDA@PNIPAM-TA nanocomposites were prepared in a high-gravity rotating packed bed reactor (RPB) for smart pesticide delivery and release. The as-prepared microgels and nanocomposites showed reversible temperature-dependent swelling/deswelling behavior and irreversible pH-induced degradation. A dynamic contact angle test suggested that the introduction of TA and PDA into the PNIPAM matrix could enhance foliar adhesion and deposition efficiency. The nanocomposites were further used for the encapsulation and delivery of imidacloprid (IMI) to protect it from rapid photolysis and improve its pest-control efficiency. Their thermoresponsive behavior as well as pesticide loading capacity could be tuned by tailoring the PNIPAM-TA shell thickness, which could be varied by the NIPAM amount. The release rate of IMI from the core/shell nanocomposites was positively correlated with environmental temperature and near-infrared (NIR) light, which was adaptive to the positive temperature-dependent toxicity correlation of IMI and the increasing trend of pests under high temperature. The cumulative release of IMI was 23.5% at 25 °C, while it was 81.2% at 40 °C after 24 h of incubation, and the release rate was greatly enhanced under NIR irradiation. The results indicated that the facile control of pesticide release could be realized by regulating environmental conditions. This work also provides an idea for using high-gravity technology to conveniently construct a smart, effective, and environmentally friendly pesticide delivery system for sustainable crop protection.

Abstract:The temperature‐responsive pesticide delivery microcapsule, based on maleic anhydride‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals‐stabilized Pickering emulsion, exhibited a high encapsulation rate and drug loading efficiency. Moreover, it demonstrated significant advantages over commercially available water‐dispersed particles of imidacloprid in terms of leaf surface diffusion and retention. The efficient use of pesticides is conducive to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, and pesticide transport carriers can enhance the utilization value of pesticides. However, design flaws in many pesticide carriers have resulted in numerous environmental and toxicity problems. Therefore, this paper proposed a method for synthesizing pesticide microcapsules using Pickering emulsion templates stabilized by maleic anhydride‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals‐g‐poly (methyl methacrylate) (MACNCs‐g‐MMA), viz., simple radical polymerization of maleic anhydride‐functionalized cellulose nanocrystals with methyl methacrylate in Pickering emulsion. The structure and morphology of microcapsules were characterized via the FT‐IR, XRD, TG‐DTG, and SEM techniques. The imidacloprid‐loaded MACNCs‐g‐MMA (IMI@MACNCs‐g‐MMA) presented a high encapsulation efficiency (~94.13%) and drug loading efficiency (~24.00%). The release behavior was affected by temperature, viz., higher temperature promoted the release of IMI. Regarding the spread and retention on the leaf surface, the IMI@MACNCs‐g‐MMA demonstrated significant advantages over commercial IMI water‐dispersible granules (CG) (36.9° vs. 104.9° for contact angle, 14.3 vs. 30.0 mg cm−2 for retention). This study provides a promising pesticide formula for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:The use of nanomaterials and nanotechnology to construct a smart pesticide delivery system with target-oriented and controlled-release functions is important to increase the effective utilization rate and minimize environmental residue pollution. A temperature-dependent delivery system can modulate the release of pesticide with temperature to improve the efficacy and precision targeting. A series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based nanogels with high deformability and tunable structure were successfully constructed for smart pesticide delivery and effective pest control. A lambda-cyhalothrin (LC)-loaded Pickering emulsion (LC@TNPE) with a stable gel-like network structure was further formed by the temperature-dependent nanogel to encapsule the pesticide. The foliar wettability, photostability, and controlled-release property of LC@TNPE were effectively enhanced compared to the commercial formulation because of the encapsulation and stabilization of nanogel. The release rate of LC positively correlated with temperature changes and thereby adapted to the trend of pest population increase at higher temperature. The LC@TNPE displayed improved control efficacy on multiple target pests including Plutella xylostella, Aphis gossypii, and Pieris rapae compared with the commercial suspension concentrate and microcapsule suspension, and it showed marked efficacy to control Pieris rapae for an extended duration even at a 40% reduced dosage. Furthermore, the safety was evaluated systematically on cells in vitro and with a nontarget organism. Studies confirmed that the system was relatively safe for HepG2 cells and aquatic organism zebrafish. This research provides an insight into creating an efficient and environmentally friendly pesticide nanoformulation for sustainable agriculture production.

Abstract:With the increase in global food demand and the destruction of environment, the development of sustainable agriculture has become increasingly more important. Stimuli-responsive controlled-release agrochemicals enhance the bioavailability of active ingredients and reduce the frequency of use and environmental pollution. Herein, 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid was used as a functional bridge to covalently link the degradable natural polymer zein and chitosan oligosaccharides (CS) to prepare a water-dispersed environmentally friendly pesticide carrier. Subsequently, via hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions photo-decomposable avermectin (AVM) was encapsulated forming a stimuli-responsive intelligent nanopesticide delivery system (AVM@CS-SS-Zein) was developed by encapsulating in the carrier. AVM was released slowly from AVM@CS-SS-Zein particles in a neutral condition and was released rapidly under stimulation of glutathione and alkalinity in simulated insects. The photostability of AVM@CS-SS-Zein was improved by 6-fold compared with that of AVM and the nanoparticles had good adherence to the leaves, slowly releasing AVM and avoiding the light decomposition of active ingredients. When the pests ingest the leaves containing AVM@CS-SS-Zein, the rapid disintegration of the nanoparticles in vivo leads to a good insecticidal effect and the control rate of AVM@CS-SS-Zein on Plutella xylostella was higher than that of AVM. After 120 h of UV irradiation, the pest mortality rate of AVM@CS-SS-Zein was 46.7% while that of AVM and AVM emulsifiable concentrate was only 13.3% and 20.0%, respectively. Therefore, this pH/redox dual stimuli-responsive nanopesticide formulation achieves target control of pests and provides an efficient nanoplatform for green agriculture.

Abstract:It is desirable for a simple and universal method to synthesize stimuli-responsive nanocarriers to targeted delivery of pesticides. In this study, a novel pH-value and laccase dual-responsive nanopesticide system loaded with lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) is established by iron mineralization after electrostatic self-assembly between sodium lignosulphonate (SL) and dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC). These nanoparticles are core–shell structures in which iron mineralization plays a key role in stabilizing the nanoparticles. This synthesis strategy is suitable for encapsulating hydrophobic and low-volatility compounds. The encapsulation of the nanocarriers prolongs the half-life of the LC under UV irradiation by 4.4-fold. After irradiation, the mortality of Agrotis ipsilon treated by the LC@SL/DDBAC/Fe is approximately 39% higher than that treated by emulsifiable concentrate (EC) at the concentration of 1 mg L−1. The dual-responsive property of lignin-based nanoplatform to alkalinity and laccase enable cargo release on demand. Although the toxicity of EC and LC@SL/DDBAC/Fe to A. ipsilon is similar, that of LC@SL/DDBAC/Fe to Brachydanio rerio is decreased by 11.57-fold, and the toxicity selective pressure is enhanced by 11-fold compared with EC. The SL/DDBAC/Fe nanocarriers represent a simple preparation procedure, excellent environmental safety, and dual-responsive release profiles and can offer a promising nanoplatform for precise pesticide delivery.

Abstract:A series of lambda‐cyhalothrin (LC)‐loaded nanogels simultaneously featuring easy preparation, low‐cost, size‐controllable, and excellent stability are fabricated through one‐step microemulsion polymerization. These nanogels endow LC with the bidirectional translocation ability in plants, potentially creating a threshold for the nanocarrier to exhibit unique and rapid transport, which correspondingly improves the control efficiency and security compared with commercial microemulsion. Nanopesticides have been acknowledged by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as a critical tool for revolutionizing future agricultural practices. However, the existing nanopesticides are often plagued by high costs, strict preparation conditions, uncontrollable size, and poor stability. Herein, taking the non‐systemic insecticide lambda‐cyhalothrin (LC) as a model pesticide, a series of LC‐loaded poly(octyl acrylate) nanogel formulations (LONFs) simultaneously featuring easy‐preparation, size‐controllable, and targeted delivery using microemulsion polymerization are developed. By adjusting the ratio of surfactants, the size of LONFs can be accurately designed to be 20, 50, 100, and 200 nm, exhibiting good stability under unconventional storage conditions (0 °C, 54 °C, ultraviolet radiation). Furthermore, reducing the particle diameter enhances the bidirectional translocation of LONFs in Vicia faba L., potentially reaching an optimal diameter (≈20 nm) for unique and rapid transport. LONFs increase the acute toxicity of LC to Aphis craccivora compared to conventional microemulsions (with a maximum reduction of 82.40% in LC50 at 24 h). Additionally, LONFs alter the lethal process of LC in human embryonic kidney 293T cells, with minimal cytotoxicity at a concentration of general application (40 mg L−1). This strategy simultaneously considers convenience, size controllability, and efficiency, providing a feasible method for the industrial development of nanopesticides.

Smart Controlled-Release Avermectin Nanopesticides Based on Metal–organic Frameworks with Large Pores for Enhanced Insecticidal Efficacy

Abstract:Nanopestcides based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great attention. Highly stable meso-porous metal-organic framework PCN-777 with large pores can accommodate the biologically active insecticide avermectin (AVM) of relatively large molecular dimensions. In this work, PCN-777 nanoparticles were synthesized for the creation of double-gated nanopesticides with sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and chitosan. The double gatekeepers could realize excellent sealing performance to prevent premature leakage of AVM. The double-gated PCN-777 based nanopesticides could achieve the controlled release of AVM in response to pH, laccase, phos-phate, and phytic acid (PA), which are related to the physiological environments of pests and crops. The PA -triggered controlled release of loaded cargos in MOF-based delivery systems was reported for the first time. This is the first example of PCN-777 drug/pesticide delivery system and also the first case of controlled-release MOF-based AVM nanopesticides, and the mechanisms of the stimuli-responsive controlled pesticide release were clearly elucidated. The nanopesticides prevented the ultraviolet photolysis of AVM owing to the PCN-777 organic ligands and SL coating. The nanopesticides had high insecticidal efficacy and field control efficacy against the pests Spodoptera litura Fabricius on cabbage, in comparison with traditional pesticide formulations, and the nanopesticides had no influence on plant growth and showed high biosafety toward non-target organisms and human cells. The smart controlled-release nanopesticides show high potential and application prospect in ecological agriculture.

Abstract:The development of pesticide-loaded nanocapsules responding to environmental stimuli holds great promise for sustainable disease control and may help to reduce pesticide usage while making it more efficient. Herein, pH-responsive nanocapsules containing pyraclostrobin (Pyr) were constructed by the rapid interfacial assembly of tannic acid (TA), ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer, and Cu2+ ions using a fine reversed-phase emulsion as a template. Under acidic conditions similar to those caused by Rhizoctonia solani infestation, these nanocapsules released Pyr to achieve its intelligent delivery and, hence, efficient R. solani control. Nanoencapsulation significantly increased the photostability of Pyr, and the half-life increased by 10 times compared with the Pyr-technical (Pyr-TC). In addition, the introduction of TA enhanced its spreading performance and rainfall resistance in crops, and contact angle drops to 2.2° ± 0.1° in 100 s. Its toxicity to non-target organisms (Daphnia magna and humans) was reduced. The fabricated nanocapsules exhibited a high antifungal activity superior to that of commercially available agents and exerted no significant adverse effects on crop growth and soil microbial communities. Thus, our work highlights the potential of nanoencapsulation for the intelligent delivery of fungicides to target crops, thus providing an effective strategy for improving the efficiency of pesticide usage and promoting sustainable pesticide development.

Abstract:In recent years, stimuli-responsive controlled-release pesticide formulations have drawn extensive as they show huge potential in the practical application of agriculture. Herein, a multifunctional composite nanocarrier was prepared by our group, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) modified graphene oxide (PNIPAm-GO), this is a temperature-responsive release pesticide formulation that can regulate pesticide release based on the temperature change. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was loaded on PNIPAm-GO nanocomposite carrier via a simple physisorption process and exhibited temperature-responsive controlled release performance leading to release of LC at a specified temperature and extended its persisted release time. In addition, the controlled-release pesticide formulations showed both good water solubility and dispersion stability while its anti-UV property. Furthermore, we also assessed the biological safety of and proved that PNIPAm-GO is non-toxic. The study of this temperature-responsive pesticide formulation has promoted the development of intelligent pesticide formulations to great extent.

Abstract:New nano/microcarriers of pesticides represent a highly promising novel field for sustainable pest management. However, despite extensive laboratory research, few studies on the design and evaluation of nanopesticides for field applications exist. In this study, we present a straightforward and green synthetic method of ultrasonic-assisted and hydrogen-bonded self-assembly at the oil-water interface for the synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) microspheres encapsulating chlorantraniliprole (CAP), with precise control over the size of the microspheres. The resulting CAP-loaded PLA microspheres (CAP-PLA MS) exhibit both high pesticide encapsulation efficiency and stability in natural environments. It has been determined that non-Fickian diffusion mainly controls pesticide release, thus enabling dynamic control over molecular transport speeds. Importantly, our functional CAP-PLA MS demonstrates superior sustained pesticide release performance under both laboratory and field conditions while maintaining better exceptional insecticidal efficacy than normal CAP in controlling O. nubilalis at a concentration of 30 or 45 g/ha. Consequently, we propose that our functional PLA microspheres could serve as ideal pesticide carriers in the sustained treatment of O. nubilalis.
From austerity to prosperity? Migration and child poverty among mainland and island Puerto Ricans

Abstract:Analyses of migrants’ economic circumstances typically use the native-born in the destination as a comparison group. We use the 1990 Census Public Use Microdata Samples for the United States and Puerto Rico to demonstrate the benefits of a comparative approach that includes data from both the origin and the destination. Specifically, the primary objective is to determine how and why the risk of child poverty is associated with migration from Puerto Rico to the United States. The results show that migration reduces the risk of child poverty, partly because better jobs are available on the mainland. Employment, human capital, family structure, and public assistance cannot completely explain observed differences. The results also show that the economic benefits of migration continue for the native-born on the mainland and that return migration to Puerto Rico is associated with impoverishment.
Biodegradable and Light-Responsive Polymeric Nanoparticles for Environmentally Safe Herbicide Delivery.

Abstract:The low utilization efficiency of pesticides exerts an adverse impact on the environment and human health. Polymer-related controlled-release nanosized pesticide systems provide a promising and efficient way to overcome the problem. In this work, a biodegradable and light-responsive amphiphilic polymer was synthesized via 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine-promoted polyesterification under mild conditions (low temperature, no vacuum, and no inert gas protection). We used this polymer to fabricate a light-triggered controlled-release nanosized pesticide system. The herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), was selected as a model drug to show its potential as a controlled-release pesticide system. It was found that the 2,4-D-loaded polymeric nanoparticles were stable without the treatment of UV, while the release rate of 2,4-D from the nanoparticles gradually increased after treatment with UV light. Pot trial showed that the 2,4-D-loaded polymer nanoparticles showed a good herbicidal effect. Finally, toxicity studies suggested that the polymer can reduce toxicity to nontarget organisms.

Sustainable Nanocarriers Fabricated Via a Dipeptide-Based Co-Assembly Approach for Enhancing the Delivery and Translocation of Herbicides

Abstract:Pesticide delivery platforms are an effective means to improve the control efficiency of pesticides through multiple functionalities. However, the prevalent use of pesticide carriers is often hindered by complex synthetic pathways, environmentally unfriendly components, and limited loading capacities, which restrict their practical applications in agriculture. In this work, we developed sustainable pesticide nanocarriers using a straightforward supramolecular co-assembly approach, employing bio-based diphenylalanine (FF) as the assembling molecule and the herbicide fluroxypyr (FP) as the active ingredient. Driven by the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, pi-pi stacking, hydrophobic interactions and van der Waals forces, FP and FF co-assembled into stable assemblies with high loading capacity. Notably, the co-assemblies with different compositions exhibited tunable microstructures, including wormlike micelles, micelle-arranged coils, and vesicles. Additionally, these nanocarriers demonstrated sensitive release properties based on the FP/FF ratio and changes in pH value; nearly 97.78% of FP could be released by the 1 : 1 co-assemblies at a pH value of 5. Furthermore, the alteration in size and microscopic morphology after co-assembly facilitated the translocation of FP in the target weed, ultimately enhancing herbicidal activity. Overall, this work proposes a promising approach for developing green and simplified pesticide carriers, offering novel insights and strategies for sustainable agricultural development.
An Alkali-Triggered Polydopamine Modified Mesoporous Silica Nanopesticide for Smart Delivery of Chlorpyrifos with Low Loss

Abstract:The development of nanotechnology provides a feasible and effective way to reduce pesticide loss and improve pesticide utilization. In this study, we created chlorpyrifos-loaded mesoporous silica nanocomposites modified with polydopamine (Cpf-MSNs@PDA) for the smart control of pests. The release of Cpf from the nanocomposite was alkali triggered and temperature dependent, guaranteeing the sustained and steady effectiveness of the active constituent with prolonged persistence time. The modification with PDA endowed the nanocomposite with better foliar adhesion and rain erosion resistance. Compared with Cpf, the leaf slip angle of Cpf-MSNs@PDA was increased from 27 degrees to 60 degrees, and the rain erosion loss was reduced by 2.6 times. The insecticidal persistence of the Cpf-MSNs@PDA nanopesticide was measured and found to be better than that of commercial Cpf with bi-insecticidal pathways. In pathway 1, a small portion of Cpf (16.7%) was released from Cpf-MSNs@PDA in vitro to perform contact toxicity on Mythimna separata, which shows an advantage of sustained release. In pathway 2, after being ingested, the alkaline midgut microenvironment of M. separata triggered the degradation of Cpf-MSNs@PDA, inducing the release of all the Cpf to exert acute gastric toxicity. These results highlight the potential of a nanopesticide in the delivery of an active pesticide ingredient with low loss and high efficiency. The design of a smart nanocomposite for the control of a specific type of pest or disease provides ideas for the development of sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Controlled pesticide release in response to environmental stimuli by encapsulating pesticide in carrier is a feasible approach to improve the effective utilization rate. Here, a temperature-responsive release microcapsule loaded with chlorpyrifos () was prepared from n-hexadecane-in-water emulsions via interfacial polymerization. The microcapsule was consisted of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) as the shell wall material and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as the crosslinker. The prepared had pesticide-loading efficiency (33.1 wt%) and favorable adhesion on the surface of cucumber and peanut foliage compared with conventional formulation. Additionally, could protect chlorpyrifos against photodegradation effectively. The in vitro release test showed that microcapsule had adjustable controlled-release characteristics with the change in temperature based on phase transition of the n-hexadecane core. Bioassay studies showed that control efficacy of microcapsule against P. xylostella was positively correlated with temperature because of temperature-induced changes in release rate. The acute toxicity of to zebrafish was reduced more than 5-fold compared with that of CPF technical. These results indicated that the microcapsule release system has great potential in the development of an effective and environmentally friendly pesticide formulation.
