Abstract:Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the most promising sustainable bioplastics for its superior processibility and mechanical strength. However, the inherent flammability and poor UV shielding severely inhibit its widespread application. Traditional solutions usually require a high content of additives, which results in the sacrifice of mechanical properties. In this work, we propose an efficient strategy to overcome these challenges by incorporating epoxy-functionalized hexa -cyclotriphosphazene (HCCP-HEP) and diphenylphosphinyl chloride modified lignin (Lignin(P)) into PLA. The synergistic effect of HCCP-HEP and Lignin(P) through free radical quenching, non-flammable gas dilution and charring promotion significantly impedes combustion and enhances the flame retardance of PLA/HCCP-HEP/Lignin(P) (PLA/H/L) composites. Consequently, the PLA/H/L composite with 1 wt% HCCP-HEP and 1 wt% Lignin(P) loading exhibits a limiting oxygen index of 28.3 % and achieves UL-94 V-0 rating. Moreover, the composite provides over 97 % shielding against UV-A and UV-B radiation with an increased ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) from 1 to 700, while maintaining superior tensile strength (59 MPa). This work presents a new approach to prepare high-performance and multi-functional PLA composites, which is expected to broaden the application of PLA.

Abstract:Balancing the flame retardant properties and mechanical performance is important for flame retardant composites. In this research, the polylactic acid (PLA)/fiber composite is prepared by treating jute woven fabric with phosphorus‐containing organosilicon compound (PCOC) and adding intumescent flame retardant (IFR) to PLA using a film‐stacking procedure, which is named flame retardant PLA (FRPLA)/PC‐F. The flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PLA/fiber composites were studied and analyzed. Mechanical/flame retardant index (M/F index) was developed to compare the comprehensive properties of the composites. The limited oxygen index (LOI) test results show the LOI value of FRPLA/PC‐F reaches 34.1%, 14.1% higher than untreated PLA/fiber composite (PLA/F). In the cone calorimeter test, the pk‐heat release rate (HRR) value of FRLA/PC‐F decreases from 549 to 388 kW/m2 compared with PLA/F. In addition, the char yield of FRPLA/PC‐F increases from 1.9% (PLA/F) to 18.6%. The scanning electron microscope images of the char yield for FRPLA/PC‐F obtained from cone calorimetry test shows a continuous network structure with the fibrous skeleton completely wrapping by the dense and uniform char layer, which plays a barrier effect that inhibits the release of volatile substance and the transfer of heat. Meanwhile, FRPLA/PC‐F exhibits 28% and 19% improvement in tensile strength and impact strength compared with PLA/F due to the boost of interfacial adhesion between fiber and PLA. The M/F index of FRPLA/PC‐F is 1.15, which is the highest among all the composites, proving the best comprehensive properties and practical applicability. The results in this manuscript above make a great development, which is attractive in the design of PLA/fiber composites with great comprehensive performance.

Abstract:In this study, low-density polylactic acid (PLA) flame retardant foams were prepared using lignin fiber (LF), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP) and SiO2 aerogel. LF, RDP and SiO2 aerogel alone did not improved the flame retardancy of PLA composites; however, APP alone required a higher addition of amount to achieve a better flame retardancy. The synergistic effect between the four can improve the flame retardancy of PLA at a lower addition level. The intumescent flame retardant system composed of LF/APP/RDP/SiO2 aerogel can not only form a dense carbon layer on the surface of the material when burning to improve the flame retardant performance, but also improve the thermal stability of PLA, increase the degradation temperature and reduce the thermal weight loss rate. The final PLA flame retardant foam (density: 0.022 g/cm3) prepared by supercritical foaming can reach V-0 rating in UL-94 vertical combustion test, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) can reach 30.5 %.

Abstract:In this work, a novel single molecule flame retardant (DT-S) was synthesized through the self-assembly of diethyltriamine penta-(methylphosphonic) acid and sulfanilamide. Additionally, the three-dimensional sea urchin-like layered double hydroxide hollow dodecahedral structure (MOFs-LDH) was etched from a MOF to increase specific surface area and reaction sites. The chemical structures of DT-S and MOFs-LDH were comprehensively characterized. Subsequently, the obtained flame retardants were molten-compounding into PLA matrix. The fire performance of PLA composites was evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion (UL-94), and cone calorimeter tests. Compared with neat PLA sample, the inclusion of 3% DT-S and 2% MOFs-LDH led to an increase in the LOI value from 19.9 to 35.0%, an upgrade in the UL-94 rating from none to V-0, and a reduction in the peak heat release rate from 524.4 to 401.2 kW m −2 . Analysis of the decomposition products of the PLA composites and the observation of char morphology suggested that DT-S and MOFs-LDH took effects in both condensed phase and gas phase. Furthermore, the evaluation of the UV protection performance using a UV-visible near-infrared spectrophotometer indicated an enhancement in the UV protection performance of PLA, achieving an "excellent" level in evaluating UV protection performance (UPF 50+).

Abstract:In this study, a novel flame retardant (PMrG) was developed by self-assembling melamine and phytic acid (PA) onto rGO, and then applying it to the improvement of the flame resistance of PLA. PMrG simultaneously decreases the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and the total heat release (THR) of the composite during combustion, and enhances the LOI value and the time to ignition (TTI), thus significantly improving the flame retardancy of the composite. The flame retardant mechanism of the PMrG is also investigated. On one hand, the dehydration of PA and the decomposition of melamine in PMrG generate non-flammable volatiles, such as H2O and NH3, which dilute the oxygen concentration around the combustion front of the composite. On the other hand, the rGO, melamine, and PA components in PMrG create a synergistic effect in promoting the formation of a compact char layer during the combustion, which plays a barrier role and effectively suppresses the release of heat and smoke. In addition, the PMrGs in PLA exert a positive effect on the crystallization of the PLA matrix, thus playing the role of nucleation agent.

Abstract:In this study, a type of all-degradable flame retardant wood/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) biocomposite (FPW) with low cost and excellent mechanical properties is prepared and studied. A novel lignin-based phosphorus-containing flame retardant (LMD) is synthesized first. PLA, wood powder, poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate), triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), and LMD are then melt-blended to prepare FPW. The limiting oxygen index value of PLAF25L15-4T (25% of L15MD and 4% of TGIC) reaches 28.6%. Furthermore, the residue at 700 degrees C is up to 31.3%, which apparently helps to increase the flame retardancy of FPW. Its tensile strength is as high as 48.7 MPa. The interfacial compatibilization is much improved as proved by scanning electron microscopy observation. This should be due to the in situ interfacial reaction between PLA, wood, and TGIC, and the lignin component both in wood and LMD. The obtained PLA biocomposite with improved mechanical and flame retardant properties is promising for its wide applications.

Abstract:As a plastic that can be prepared from biomass resources, polylactic acid (PLA) has the characteristics of being degradable and renewable, and has shown great potential in replacing petroleum-based polymer materials. However, PLA material is flammable, the droplet phenomenon during combustion is still a disadvantage of PLA applications. In this research, a core–shell structure flame retardant was prepared based on polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA) coated ammonium polyphosphate (APP) via layer-by-layer assembly using water as the assembly medium. The prepared core–shell flame retardant APP@PAM@SA-nDL (where “DL” is the PAM&SA double layer, and “n” represents 1-3DL) was molten compounded with PLA to improve its flame retardancy. APP@PAM@SA-nDL is added to PLA, which not only improves the flame retardancy of PLA composites, but also significantly improves the toughness, and the flame retardancy, flame retardant mechanism, mechanical performance and toughening mechanism of PLA composites were systematically studied. Among the core–shell flame retardants with different layers, the addition of APP@PAM@SA-3DL gives PLA composites excellent flame retardancy and tensile properties. Due to the formation of the cross-linked polymer network structure, 5% APP@PAM@SA-3DL can increase the elongation at break of PLA composites from 19.82 to 294.5%. In addition, 10% of APP@PAM@SA-3DL made the UL-94 of PLA composite materials reach V-0 level and increased the LOI from 19.7% (neat PLA) to 29.2%. The analysis of the carbon layer shows that the excellent flame-retardant performance of PLA composites can be attributed to the formation of a dense carbon layer during condensation and the dilution effect of P-containing free radicals, forming a flame-retardant mechanism with a condensed phase as the main component and a gas phase as a supplement. This high toughness flame-retardant PLA composite material has broad application prospects in the textile field.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Highly-efficient biodegradable cellulose-based flame retardants have great potential to be developed as new generation of sustainable flame retardants. In this study, phenylphosphorylated microcrystal cellulose (PhPMCC) and phenylphosphorylaminated MCC (PhPNMCC) as novel biobased flame retardants were successfully synthesized by phosphorylation and phosphoryl amination modification, respectively. The limited oxygen index (LOI) of Poly(lactide) (PLA) biocomposite with a loading of 4 wt% PhPMCC increased to 27.0%, and PLA/4wt%PhPMCC passed UL-94 V-0 rating. The PhPMCC and PhPNMCC exhibited good flame retardancy and melt-dripping suppression on PLA, and the proposed flame-retardant mechanism of the PLA/PhPMCC biocomposites was mainly attributed to that the phosphorus-oxygen radicals inhibited the decomposition rate of macromolecular chains of PLA, and a stable residue containing polyphosphate and polyaromatic ring had a synergistic barrier effect on the condensed phase. The tensile and bending strengths of PLA/PhPNMCC biocomposites were superior to those of PLA/PhPMCC composites because the interfacial reaction between the amino groups of PhPNMCC and PLA matrix provided them good interfacial compatibility. The preparation of highly efficient cellulose-based flame retardants and fully biobased PLA composite promote the utilization of renewable biomaterials.

Abstract:Despite polylactide (PLA) representing one of the most promising biodegradable materials, its applications lag far behind owing to the disadvantages of inherent brittleness and flammability, which is challengeable to simultaneously overcome. In this work, a phosphorus‐containing core‐shell starch nanoparticle (FR‐CSS) was synthesized via soap‐free emulsion polymerization for concurrent improvement of toughness and flame retardancy of PLA. The results revealed that with the incorporation of 10 wt% FR‐CSS, the elongation at break of PLA/10FR‐CSS was prominently improved to 308% while the tensile strength was about 40.0 MPa. Particularly, the toughness of PLA/FR‐CSS was as high as 108.2 MJ/m3, which was 48 times higher than that of neat PLA. Besides, the PLA/10FR‐CSS exhibited improved flame retardancy with a UL‐94 V‐2 rating and a LOI value of 24.5%. These results established an integrated design strategy of incorporating phosphorus‐containing core‐shell nanoparticles to prepare PLA composites combined excellent toughness with enhanced flame retardancy, therefore broadening the application gallery of PLAs.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has garnered global attention as a potential biomaterial thanks to its biodegradability and renewability. However, the drawbacks of its high flammability impede its broader application. In this work, two different types of all bio-based charring agents (named as CFU, CVA) were prepared in a green and environmentally friendly ethanol solvent by using chitosan derived from corn starch and sugarcane, as well as bio-based vanillin and furfural, as raw materials. The CFU (or CVA) in conjunction with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were incorporated into PLA to prepare flame-retardant and high-performance composite materials. The addition of 3.75 wt% CFU (or CFA) and 11.25 wt% APP to PLA resulted in the attainment of the UL-94 V-0 rating, a nearly 28% of limiting oxygen index, as well as a decrease of ∼35% and ∼90% in total heat and smoke releases, respectively. Besides, the addition of mixed flame retardants significantly reduced the viscosity of PLA by an order of magnitude, which was greatly beneficial for processing and production. The mechanical performance testing results demonstrated an increase in the elongation at break and impact strength of PLA composites containing CFU (or CVA) and APP. Moreover, the heat resistance and crystallinity of the PLA composites were also improved.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has garnered significant interest as a bio-based polymer due to its favorable thermal and processing characteristics, as well as its notable economic and environmental benefits. However, the drawbacks such as flammability and poor toughness of PLA severely constrained its applications in more fields. Here, based on the outstanding flame-retardant properties of core-shell flame retardant (CSFR) and the toughening potential of natural rubber (NR), we synthesized inorganic-organic hybrid of CSFR-NR using an aqueous synthesis to synchronous optimization of the comprehensive performance of PLA. The as-prepared CSFR-NR with "hard core and soft shell" possess the ability to promote char formation and facilitate uniform dispersion in the PLA matrix. Consequently, the PLA/CSFR-NR showed an excellent flame retardancy with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 31.5 % and UL-94 V-0 rating and synergistic toughening effect with absolutely improvement in elongation at break and notched izod impact strength, achieving a balance between the fire safety and mechanical performance. Moreover, the degradation rate of PLA has also been substantially promoted by CSFR-NR in simulated seawater. Hence, this study offers a straightforward, efficient, and environmentally friendly strategy for creating high-performance flame retardant and toughened bioplastics.

Abstract:A novel soy protein-based phosphonate flame retardant (SPPU) was synthesized by a facile two-step method for PLA. And the flame-retardant PLA/SPPU composites were prepared by melt blending. From the results, 3 wt.% of SPPU could increase the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of PLA from 19.4 % to 23.4 %, and reach V-0 grade in UL-94 vertical combustion test. In the cone calorimetric tests, the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) of PLA/SPPU decreased significantly. The results of TG and TG-IR of PLA/SPPU, FTIR and XPS of the char residual showed that SPPU mainly exerted flame retardant effects in the gas phase, accompanied by some effects in condensed phase. Besides, SPPU could accelerate the biodegradation of PLA under compost conditions, which increased the biodegradation rate of PLA from 86.2 % to 88.39 % in 180 days. The addition of appropriate content of SPPU would not cause the deterioration of mechanical properties of PLA, but can improve the toughness of PLA.

Abstract:Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) is a kind of important bio-macromolecule which can be prepared via fermentation of starch of maize and sweet potato. Flammability and extremely poor crystallizability limited its wide application. In this work, a novel Schiff base derivate (CP) was synthesized and, combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a synergistic flame retardant and nucleating agent to investigate its effects on LOI, UL-94 rating, thermal stability, combustion behavior and crystallizability of PLA. With loading of 5%CP/10%APP, PLA showed a significantly enhanced LOI and passed V-0 fire-safety rating with self-extinguish effect. PLA/5%CP/10%APP presented the lowest pHRR, THR and TSR, and highest char residue yield, FPI and FRI in cone calorimetry test, indicating an excellent flame retardancy effect, enhanced fire safety and longer escaping time in the fire. A continuous, compact and thick char layer structure formed as a protective barrier in combustion process, to enhance heat-insulating and oxygen resistance property, thermal stability and smoke-suppressing capacity of PLA. Flame retardancy mechanism was proposed and discussed based on comprehensive and in-depth characterization techniques. Also, 5%CP/10%APP presented a good nucleation effect to enormously increase crystallizability and shorten crystallization time of PLA.

Abstract:<p>A novel flame retardant (POCODA) was synthesized using the POC and ODA. The POCODA/APP as a synergistic flame retardant (FR) was incorporated into the poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) to investigate effects of this synergistic FR on the thermal stability, combustion behavior and flame retardancy on the PLA. The limited oxygen index (LOI) value of the PLA-based composites gradually increased with an enhancement in the amount of the POCODA/APP. Except the PLA/5%APP, the V-0 level achieved for other composites. Both the POCODA and POCODA/APP exhibited the self-extinguishing effect on the PLA in the UL-94 test. The pHRR, THR, TSP and other combustion performance parameters of the composites reduced, compared to neat PLA, and the PLA/2%POCODA/10%APP composite exhibited the dense and continuous carbon residue after the CONE measurement and showed most excellent flame retardance. With combination of the results of the SEM, TG-IR and PY-GC/MS measurement, the flame retardant mechanism of the PLA/2%POCODA/10%APP composite was also proposed and discussed in detail.</p>

Abstract:Some crop by-products are considered to be promising materials for the development of novel biobased products for industrial applications. The flammability of these alternatives to conventional materials is a constraint to expanded applications. Polylactide (PLA) composites containing a combination of oxidized corn pith fiber (OCC) and a biobased flame retardant (PA-THAM) have been prepared via an in situ modification method. SEM/EDS, FTIR and TGA were performed to establish that PA-THAM was coated onto the surface of OCC. The mechanical properties, thermal stability and fire behavior of PLA-based biocomposites were investigated. The incorporation of 5 phr PA-THAM imparted biocomposite good interfacial adhesion and increased decomposition temperature at 10% mass loss by 50 °C. The flame retardant properties were also improved, as reflected by an increased LOI value, a UL-94 V-2 rating, reduction of PHRR, and increased formation of char residue. Therefore, the introduction of 5 phr PA-THAM can maintain a good balance between flame retardancy and mechanical properties of this PLA/OCC system.

Abstract:Intumescent flame retardant (FR) system containing acid source, foaming agent and carbonizing agent becomes popular to improve flame suppression. It is still challenging to improve FR performance by directly utilizing polymer matrix as carbonizing agent. Herein, we selected polylactide (PLA) matrix as carbonizing agent, APP encapsulated with melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin (MF@APP) as FR system, and acidic molecular sieve (HZ) as a synergist to improve the flame suppression performance in PLA/MF@APP composites. The APP surfaces were encapsulated with MF particles to protect APP from moisture, which could be supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer spectra (FTIR). Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD) measurement proved that HZ particle exhibited more weak and strong acid sites. As an effective synergist, PLA/MF@APP composites with 0.5% synergist exhibit higher (~ 60%) limited oxygen index (LOI) of 28.8% and lower (50%) peak heat release rate (pHRR) of 211 kW/m 2 than that of neat PLA. In order to investigate the acidic role of molecular sieve synergist, we exploit neat molecular sieve as a control sample for the comparative study. As a result of protective char layer formation, the total smoke release (TSR) value further decreased from 130.4 to 76.6 m 2 /m 2 in the PLA/MF@APP composites with acidic synergists.

Abstract:Although mesoporous metals have been synthesized by electrochemical methods, the possible compositions have been limited to noble metals (e.g., palladium, platinum, gold) and their alloys. Herein we describe the first fabrication of continuously mesoporous Cu films using polymeric micelles as soft templates to control the growth of Cu under sophisticated electrochemical conditions. Uniformly sized mesopores are evenly distributed over the entire film, and the pore walls are composed of highly crystalized Cu.
Performance analysis and structure characterization of polylactic acid modified with three flame retardants

Abstract:In this paper, flame retardant composites were prepared by incorporating three flame retardants (FRs), including triphenyl phosphate (TPP), polysiloxane (PSQ) and phosphite functionalized polysiloxane (PPSQ), respectively into a polylactic acid (s/PLLA) matrix. The results indicated that the ultimate oxygen index increased from 20.6% (s/PLLA) to 22.5% (s/PLLA/TPP), 21.1% (s/PLLA/PSQ), and 23.3% (s/PLLA/PPSQ). The composites exhibited a decrease in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and prolonged peak time according to the cone calorimetry analysis. s/PLLA/PPSQ possessed the highest residual carbon content and the densest char residue with finest and smallest pores, indicating excellent flame-retardant performance. The crystallization behavior analysis revealed that the three FRs resulted in an increased crystallization rate and crystallinity. Notably, the crystallinity of s/PLLA/PPSQ increased from 25.8% in s/PLLA to 37.3%. Additionally, PSQ and PPSQ effectively enhanced the mechanical properties of composite materials. Compared to s/PLLA, the tensile strength of s/PLLA/PSQ and s/PLLA/PPSQ increased by 11.5% and 31.3% respectively, and storage modulus increased by 50.0% and 14.6%. This research demonstrated that among the three additives, PPSQ can effectively provide both flame retardancy and mechanical properties to the s/PLLA matrix, resulting in the composite with the best comprehensive performance.

Abstract:Weak interfacial adhesion and inflammability of bamboo fiber (BF) reinforced poly (lactic acid) (PLA) composites restricts its application in construction field. In this paper, BF was modified by using 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane (IPMS) firstly, and then reacted with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) to obtain BF modified by silica aerogel which is marked as IBF-Si. The IBF-Si and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were used to improve the mechanical and flame retardant properties of PLA. The results showed that 20 wt% IBF-Si and 10 wt% APP make PLA achieve the UL-94-V0 and a LOI of 36.4 vol%, while PLA with 20 wt% BF and 10 wt% APP just obtain the UL-94-V2, and a LOI of 27.8 vol%. Moreover, the tensile and impact strength are improved greatly, after introducing 1 wt% IPMS into PLA/IBF-Si the mechanical properties are improved more indicating better interface adhesion between PLA and IBF-Si. In addition, the IBF-Si decreases the thermal conductivity of PLA/IBF-Si composites, and suppresses the “wick effect” of BF. Meanwhile, the IBF-Si promotes the char formation of APP which is helpful to prevent the exchange of heat and oxygen between the environment and resin. Thus both mechanical and flame retardant properties are improved.
