Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with attractive chemical and structural properties have been considered as prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, while the insufficient exposed active sites and low electrical conductivity of MOFs limit their electrocatalytic activity and further industrial applications. Herein, a unique strategy to remarkably boost electrocatalytic OER activity of one Ni-based MOF is developed by the simultaneous incorporation of Fe3+ ions and BF4- anions within its layer structure. The optimized electrocatalyst NiFe-MOF-BF4--0.3 NSs shows superior OER activity with a required ultralow overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1, and outstanding stability in an alkaline medium. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results verify that the interactions between metal (M) ions and BF4- anions (defined as M···F, M = Ni or Fe) in this catalyst can adjust the adsorption abilities of oxygen intermediates and lower the free energy barrier of the potential-determining step by tailoring its electronic structure, thereby remarkably boosting its OER activity. This protocol provides new insights into surface and structure engineering of 2D MOFs, leading to greatly enhanced electrocatalytic OER performance.
Surface reconstruction and structural transformation of two-dimensional Ni-Fe MOFs for oxygen evolution in seawater media

Abstract:As a four-electron transfer reaction, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is limited by large overpotential and slow kinetics. Here, we in-situ synthesized two-dimensional (2D) Ni-Fe metal-organic framework nanosheets on nickel foam (Ni x Fe-TPA/NF, TPA = terephthalic acid) for oxygen evolution in alkaline and alkaline seawater electrolytes. In 1 M KOH, Ni 3 Fe-TPA/NF shows a low overpotential ( η 10 ) of 189 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and an ultra-low overpotential of only 260 mV at 500 mA·cm −2 . In alkaline seawater, Ni 3 Fe-TPA/NF still provides impressive OER performance, with an η 10 of 265 mV. In-situ Raman characterization results show that the phase transition occurs during the OER, and Ni 3 FeOOH with more oxygen vacancies is in-situ formed, reducing the OER energy barrier. Density functional theory (DFT) reveals that the synergy between Ni and Fe reduces the energy barrier and accelerates the rate-determining step. In addition, the ultra-thin 2D sheet structure and the close combination of Ni 3 FeOOH and highly conductive NF support ensure the high catalytic OER activity. Therefore, the surface reconstruction and structural modification strategy can be used to design and prepare high-performance OER electrocatalysts for energy-related applications.

Abstract:A mixture of Ni and Fe oxides is among the most commonly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during the water oxidation process. In particular, Ni oxide incorporated with even a small amount of Fe leads to substantively enhanced OER activity. However, the critical role of Fe species during the electrocatalytic process is still under evaluation. Herein, we report nickel (oxy)hydroxide incorporated with Fe through the surface reconstruction of a bimetallic metal-organic framework (NiFe-MOF) during the water oxidation process. The spectroscopic investigations with theoretical calculations reveal the critical role of Fe in promoting the formation of highly oxidized Ni 4+ , which directly correlates with an enhanced OER activity. Both the geometric and electronic structures of the as-reconstructed Ni 1- x Fe x OOH electrocatalysts can be delicately tuned by the Ni-Fe ratio of the bimetallic NiFe-MOF, further affecting the catalytic activity. As a result, the Ni 1− x Fe x OOH derived from Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 -MOF delivers low overpotentials of 260 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 400 mV at 300 mA cm −2 .

Abstract:In the pursuit of advancing electrocatalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the development of nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a judicious balance of cost-effectiveness and catalytic efficacy assumes paramount importance. In this endeavor, we have achieved a commendable feat in the synthesis of Ni MOFs integrated with uniformly dispersed Fe and S species upon a FeS substrate according to precipitation-dissolution equilibrium. Owing to the elevated overall conductivity of FeS substrate, conjugation carboxylate ligands and spindle shape structure with uniformly dispersed Fe and S element, Ni MOFs/FeS/IF catalyst exhibits excellent OER catalytic activity, requiring overpotentials of 250 and 280 mV to reach current densities of 100 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH and 1M KOH seawater, respectively, as compared with Ni MOFs/NF catalyst (427@100 mA cm-2, 455@100 mA cm-2) in 1M KOH. Interestingly, the Ni MOFs/FeS/IF electrode displays remarking electrochemical stability with high current density of 500 mA cm-2 after testing for 50 h, attributed to the synergistic effect of bimetallic centers and optimized coordination environment by slight Ni‒S bond. The study exposes the chance for efficiently driving fresh water and seawater splitting by uniformly distributed anion and cation based on precipitation-dissolution equilibrium during in situ generation of Metal-organic frameworks toward advanced electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), praised for structural flexibility and tunability, are prominent catalyst prototypes for exploring oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Yet, their intricate transformations under OER, especially in industrial high-current environments, pose significant challenges in accurately elucidating their structure-activity correlation. Here, we harnessed an electrooxidation process for controllable MOF reconstruction, discovering that Fe doping expedites Ni(Fe)-MOF structural evolution, accompanied by the elongation of Ni-O bonds, monitored by in-situ Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy. Theoretical modeling further reveals that Fe doping and defect-induced tensile strain in the NiO6 octahedra augments the metal ds-Op hybridization, optimizing their adsorption behavior and augmenting OER activity. The reconstructed Ni(Fe)-MOF, serving as the anode in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis, achieves a noteworthy current density of 3.3 A cm-2 at 2.2 V while maintaining equally stable operation for 160 h spanning from 0.5 A cm-2 to 1 A cm-2. This undertaking elevates our comprehension of OER catalyst reconstruction, furnishing promising avenues for designing highly efficacious catalysts across electrochemical platforms.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the anode is one of the key half-cell reactions in water electrolysis and metal-air batteries, and its reaction process is mainly hampered by sluggish kinetics and low efficiency. In this work, a series of MIL-53 metal-organic framework (MOF) derived materials grown on self-sacrificial SSM substrate was designed and synthesized for efficient water oxidation in alkaline solutions. The as-obtained FeNiBDC/SSM (SSM = stainless steel matrix and H 2 BDC = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid) with MIL-53 MOF of uniform morphology and high porosity was successfully synthesized via a facile one-step method using recycled stainless steel as a template. Afterward, FeNiBDC/SSM was accompanied by morphological and structural changes during the OER process while the modified MOF components on the SSM substrate degraded into Fe/NiOOH species, which serve as catalytic centers. After the stability test for 100 h, the used optimal FeNiBDC/SSM2 exhibited a promising electrocatalytic OER performance with a low Tafel slope of 74.5 mV dec -1 , a small overpotential of 239 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , and high current retention of 95.20 %. This work provides a new research idea for the sustainable recycling of existing resources and the one-step in-situ preparation of MOF/substrate electrocatalyst for OER.

Abstract:Structure reconstruction of electrocatalysts to generate metal hydroxides/oxyhydroxides species is critical towards efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the controllable regulation of the reconstruction process still remains challenge. Given the designable nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), herein, we reported a localized structure disordering strategy to accelerate the structure reconstruction of Ni-BDC to generate NiOOH for boosting OER. The Ni-BDC nanosheets were modified by Fe3+ and urea to form cracks, which could promote the accessibility of the Ni sites by the electrocatalyte and thus promoting the reconstruction to form NiOOH. In addition, the interaction between Ni2+ and Fe3+ allows the electron flow from Ni2+ to Fe3+, further enhance the NiOOH generation. As a result, the optimized sample exhibits excellent OER activity with a small overpotential of 251 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is superior to most of the MOFs-based OER catalysts reported previously. This work provides a controllable strategy to regulate the structure reconstruction for promoting OER, which could give important guidance for the development of more efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Chemically bonded MOFs on supports are desirable yet lacking in routine synthesis, as they may allow variable structural evolution and the underlying structure-activity relationship to be disclosed. Herein, direct MOF synthesis is achieved by an organic acid-etching strategy (AES). Using π-conjugated ferrocene (Fc) dicarboxylic acid as the etching agent and organic ligand, a series of MFc-MOF (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Zn) nanosheets are synthesized on the metal supports. The crystal structure is studied using X-ray diffraction and low-dose transmission electron microscopy, which is quasi-lattice-matched with that of the metal, enabling in-situ MOF growth. Operando Raman and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy disclose that the NiFc-MOF features dynamic structural rebuilding during OER. The reconstructed one showing optimized electronic structures with an upshifted total d-band center, high M-O bonding state occupancy, and localized electrons on adsorbates indicated by density functional theory calculations, exhibits outstanding OER performance with a fairly low overpotential (130 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and good stability (144 h). The newly established approach for direct MOF synthesis and structural reconstruction disclosure stimulate the development of more prudent catalysts for advancing OER.

Abstract:Seeking new methods to modulate the structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for diverse applications, particularly for water splitting is intensively urgent but challenging. Herein, a simple hydrothermal method employing HCl as the modulator is developed to synthesize series of NiFe-MOF-n/NF. The amount of HCl modulator not only change the elemental composition and crystal structure but also further modulate the electronic structure of NiFe-MOF-n/NF, thus improve the intrinsic activity. Thinks to the synergetic interactions between Ni and Fe atoms, free-standing feature, the optimized NiFe-MOF-2/NF delivers excellent OER activity with overpotentials of 209 and 260 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 36.4 mV dec-1 and excellent OER stability for 24 h at 100 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH. It is demonstrates that NiFe-MOF-2/NF are in situ converted into metal oxide/oxyhydroxide after the OER, serving as the real active sites. This study offers a feasible way to fabricate low-cost, efficient MOFs-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be promising candidates for electrochemical water splitting. However, most MOFs are characterized by low electronic conductivity limiting their use as bulk materials for anodes and cathodes. Furthermore, the understanding of the critical parameters controlling the activity and stability of MOF electrocatalysts is still insufficient. Herein, a systematic analysis is presented of the key structural parameters controlling the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and stability of a representative family of bimetallic NiFe‐MOFs, where the role of the metal cations on the accessible active sites and intrinsic activity can be investigated independently from the crystal structure. The models and in‐depth structural and morphological characterizations reveal a hierarchy of properties affecting the OER activity with accessible sites and intrinsic activity playing a major role in the charge transfer efficiency. Optimization of these properties and addition of a conductive support substrate leads to efficient MOF‐nanocomposite electrocatalysts achieving a low overpotential of 258 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 49 mV dec−1 and excellent stability for more than 32 h of continuous OER in alkaline medium.

Abstract:A hetero‐structured Ni‐BDC/NM88B(Fe) metal–organic framework is synthesized to be as an outstanding electrocatalyst for seawater oxidation. The unique electronic channel (Ni─O─Fe) in this heterostructure not only enables the rapid reconstruction to generate the protective layer of NiFeOOH, thereby avoiding the effects of CER, but also optimizes the adsorption energy of the intermediates, leading to superior seawater oxidation performance. Seawater electrolysis is a sustainable technology for producing hydrogen that would neither cause global freshwater shortages nor create carbon emissions. However, this technology is severely hampered by the insufficient stability and the competition from the chlorine evolution reaction (ClER) in actual application. Herein, a metal–organic framework (MOF)‐on‐MOF heterojunction (Ni‐BDC/NH2‐MIL‐88B(Fe)) denoted as (Ni‐BDC/NM88B(Fe)) is synthesized as an effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst for high‐performance seawater electrolysis, which exhibits a long stability of 200 h and low overpotentials of 232 and 299 mV at 100 mA cm−2 in alkaline freshwater and seawater solution, respectively. The exceptional performance is attributed to the rapid self‐reconstruction of Ni‐BDC/NM88B(Fe) to produce NiFeOOH protective layer, thereby avoiding ClER‐induced dissolution. Moreover, the interface interaction between Ni‐BDC and NM88B(Fe) could form the Ni─O─Fe bonds in Ni‐BDC/NM88B(Fe) to promote the electron transfer and lower the energy barrier of the rate‐determining step, thereby accelerating the OER. These electrochemical properties make it intriguing candidate as an efficient electrocatalyst for practical alkaline seawater electrolysis.

Self-Optimized Metal–Organic Framework Electrocatalysts with Structural Stability and High Current Tolerance for Water Oxidation

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) typically suffer from fast degradation under harsh electrolyte conditions, impeding their practical use in industrial electrolyzers. Besides, the evolution of catalytic centers in MOFs and the related influence on their performance along the progress of reaction have rarely been studied. Here, we report a type of structurally stable bimetallic FeNi-MOF nanoarrays with self-optimized electrocatalytic activities in the oxygen production. Such a unique dynamic phenomenon is related with the gradual valence increments of Fe ions in MOFs, which trigger the continuous performance improvement before reaching an optimal steady state. Apart from the intact crystalline structures upon cycling, these FeNi-MOFs achieve low overpotentials of 239 and 308 mV at the current densities of 50 and 200 mA cm–2, respectively, and show durable operation for over 1033 h (>43 days) at 100 mA cm–2 and for another 200 h at 500 mA cm–2. A direct comparison of isostructural and single crystalline Fe-MOFs and Ni-MOFs resolves higher activities of Fe sites in the bimetallic MOFs, which are corroborated by theoretical calculations. The Fe–O bond covalency increment during Fe oxidation enhances the proton–electron transfers with the oxygen 2p-band closer to the Fermi level, thereby expediting the OER process. Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a complex four-electron transfer process that poses a significant challenge to the efficient production of hydrogen through water splitting. However, developing non-noble metal electrocatalyst with excellent OER performance is still a big challenge. Herein, we propose a new strategy for the in-situ growth of two-dimensional amorphous/crystalline thiophene-based Ni-Fe metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using Ni-Fe foam (NFF) as metal source and current collector, and thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (TDC) as corrosion agent and ligand. TDC was ionized at high temperature to produce H+ ions that etch NFF to release Ni2+ and Fe2+ ions, which were coordinated with TDC to in situ synthesize two-dimensional Ni-Fe thiophenedicarboxylate coordination polymer (NiFe-TDC) nanobelts on NFF. The unique structure and synergistic effect of Ni and Fe ions of NiFe-TDC0.05 result in the excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 224 and 256 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and it can run stably for 100 h at a current density of 100 mA cm-2, indicating the outstanding stability. Furthermore, NiFe-TDC0.05 remains the excellent OER performance with an extremely low potential of 196 and 271 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in seawater with 1 mol L-1 (M) KOH, respectively. The assembled NiFe-TDC0.05 || Pt/C water electrolysis cell achieves a current density of 100 mA cm-2 at a low voltage of 1.78 V. The work provides a new method to prepare two dimensional MOFs for efficient water oxidation.

Abstract:Realizing a high-efficiency electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a great challenge in water splitting and metal-air battery fields due to the slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a synchronous dual-phase synthetic strategy is developed to successfully construct a cactus-like dual-phase bimetallic metal- organic framework (MOF) on a nickel foam (NF) substrate (noted as NiFe-MOF@NF). It is constituted by Ni-main NiFe-MOF and Fe-main NiFe-MOF. When functioning as an anode, the freestanding cactus-like dual-phase NiFe-MOF@NF catalyst merely requires a lower overpotential of 277 mV to supply 100 mA cm-2 with robust stability (90% retainment of initial current density after 24 h chronoamperometry measurement). Density functional theory calculations on the NiFe-MOF@NF catalyst reveal that the combination of Ni and Fe has efficiently modulated the electron configuration of metal centers and optimized the absorption/desorption of OER oxygen-containing intermediates. Thus, we demonstrate a novel synchronous dual-phase synthetic strategy to engineer freestanding dual-phase electrocatalysts, which feature multiple synergetic effects considerably boosting OER performance for optimizing the energy conversion and storage system.

Abstract:The design and preparation of outstanding catalysts are significant for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which performs a crucial function in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we have prepared metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets on a nickel foam (NF) substrate via a two-step procedure including a hydrothermal reaction and an in situ transformation process. As for the anodic OER process, the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with a small overpotential of 265 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and impressive long-term catalytic durability and stability without obvious deactivation. The superior electrocatalytic performance of the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF material is mainly due to the substantial active metal centres, enhanced electrical conductivity and favorable kinetics. We believe that the strategy will be of great benefit to the development of highly efficient metal electrocatalysts, and will pave the way for the application of metal catalysts in the OER.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, however, suffering aggregation and poor operation stability. Herein, ultrafine Fe3O4 nanoparticles (diameter: 6 ± 2 nm) are homogeneously immobilized on 2D Ni based MOFs (Ni-BDC, thickness: 5 ± 1 nm) to improve the OER stability. Electronic structure modulation for enhanced catalytic activity is studied via adjusting the amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on Ni-BDC. The optimal Fe3O4/Ni-BDC achieves the best OER performance with an overpotential of 295 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 47.8 mV dec-1 and a considerable catalytic durability of more than 40 h (less than 5 h for Ni-BDC alone). DFT calculations confirm that the active sites for Fe3O4/Ni-BDC are mainly contributed by Fe species with a higher oxidation state, and the potential-determining step (PDS) is the formation of the adsorbed O* species, which are facilitated in the composite.

Abstract:Development of cost-effective, efficient, and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with fast kinetic reaction is highly significant, considering the elevated thermodynamic energy barrier involved in water electrolysis. To overcome such challenges, an innovative vapor phased iron-doping strategy is employed on carbon nanotubes (CNT)-interlinked metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (Ni-MOF@CNT) to obtain mixed metal oxide and metal heteronanoparticles superficially implanted partially (semi)-decomposed MOF nanosheets (Ni-M@C-400). These semi-MOF nanosheets attain the structural privileges related to MOF-nanostructure, mixed metal nanoparticles synergism, interconnected-CNT assisted high conductivity, and mechanical strength. As a result, Ni-M@C-400 exhibits exceptional OER activity with overpotential as low as 229 mV to reach the benchmark current density of 10 mA/cm2 (η10) and exhibits greatly reduced thermodynamic barrier (Tafel slopes of 40.51 mV/dec) along with significant durability for ∼60 h. More importantly, this sublimated iron-doped semi-MOF (Ni-M@C-400) displays significantly better OER performance over the corresponding annealed bimetallic MOF (NiFe-M@C-400: 270 mV at η10). Moreover, the successful incorporation of vapor phased iron into variety of MOFs (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) approved its uniqueness and the universality. This work provides an innovative vapor phased heteroatom-doping strategy to develop cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.

Abstract:Ionic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) enabling fast ions exchange are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Here, Ni‐btz constructed from a neutral azolate ligand is selected and Fe is introduced to build up bimetallic coupling effect. Continuous 3D NiFe‐btz films derived from high‐degree intergrowth of macrosized MOF particles are fabricated, which are utilized as highly efficient OER electrocatalysts. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their permanent porosity and rich architectural diversity; however, ionic MOFs enabling fast ions exchange during OER are rarely explored. Here, an ionic MOF (Ni‐btz) constructed with an azolate ligand is selected, and continuous 3D bimetallic MOF (NiFe‐btz) films deriving from high‐degree intergrowth of microsized MOFs particles are fabricated. The as‐prepared NiFe‐btz/NF‐OH electrode exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 239 mV at 10 mA cm−2 under alkaline condition. The OER charge transfer process and bimetallic coupling effect in ionic NiFe‐btz are probed by density functional theory calculations and confirmed via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman measurements. The partial density of states of NiFe‐btz indicates that the main contribution for electron density around the Fermi level is from Cl ions clarifying the profitable impact of ionic MOF framework. This work systematically demonstrates the relationship of electronic structure and OER activity in ionic, bimetallic MOFs and expands the scope of 3D MOF films for efficient OER.
