Abstract:In this paper, the electrocatalytic efficiency of bi-metallic organic framework compounds grown on nickel foam (NF) has been enhanced by adjusting the amount of iron and cobalt precursors. A unique wedge-like morphology was observed in Fe-1-Co-1-MOF. The optimized Fe-1-Co-1-MOF (1:1 of molar ratio of iron to cobalt) exhibits superior catalytic activity to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a lowest overpotential of only 233 mV at a current density of 10 mA.cm(-2) and the higher current density of 400 mA.cm(-2) can be provided at overpotential of 264 mV. The Tafel slope in alkaline aqueous solutions was 24.4 mV.dec(-1). After 10 h of continuous operation, the catalyst showed only a slight loss of current density at 50 mA.cm(-2). This success may be attributed to synergy between the bi-metallic organic framework catalyst and the large pores of conductive nickel foam, as well as the synergistic effect between the two phases molecules of the bi-metallic organic framework metal. Abstract:The design and preparation of outstanding catalysts are significant for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which performs a crucial function in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we have prepared metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets on a nickel foam (NF) substrate via a two-step procedure including a hydrothermal reaction and an in situ transformation process. As for the anodic OER process, the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with a small overpotential of 265 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and impressive long-term catalytic durability and stability without obvious deactivation. The superior electrocatalytic performance of the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF material is mainly due to the substantial active metal centres, enhanced electrical conductivity and favorable kinetics. We believe that the strategy will be of great benefit to the development of highly efficient metal electrocatalysts, and will pave the way for the application of metal catalysts in the OER.

Abstract:The in situ growth of metal organic framework (MOF) derivatives on the surface of nickel foam is a novel type of promising self-supporting electrode catalyst. In this paper, this work reports for the first time the strategy of in situ growth of Ni-MOF, where the metal source is purely provided by a nickel foam (NF) substrate without any external metal ions. MOF-derived Ni2P/NPC structure is achieved by the subsequent phosphidation to yield Ni2P on porous N, P-doped carbon (NPC) backbone. Such strategy provides the as-synthesized Ni2P/NPC/NF electrocatalyst an extremely low interfacial steric resistance. Moreover, a unique three-dimensional hierarchical structure is achieved in Ni2P/NPC/NF, providing massive active sites, short ion diffusion path, and high electrical conductivity. Directly applied as the electrode, Ni2P/NPC/NF demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance towards both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with low overpotentials of only 58 mV and 208 mV to drive 10 mA cm−2, respectively, in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, Ni2P/NPC/NF acting as the overall water splitting electrodes can generate a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an ultralow cell voltage of 1.53 V. This simple strategy paves the way for the construction of self-supporting transition metal-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ultrathin Bimetal MOF nanosheets (BMOFNs) are regarded as effective electrocatalyst for Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their abundance of coordinatively unsaturated metal atoms, enhanced mass permeability and coupling effect between bimetals, while the limited conductivity and stability severely hinders their widespread application. Here, we develop an in situ semi-sacrificial template-assisted strategy to grow ultrathin BMOFNs on NiCo-LDH to construct non-noble metal electrocatalysts that are both active and stable. The optimized NiCo-LDH@MOFs heterostructure exhibits a superior electrocatalytic activity with accelerated electronic transfer and significantly enhanced durability of over 300 h. An advanced AFM-IR technology is introduced for the first time to investigate the formation of the 2D-2D heterogeneous structure in NiCo-LDH@MOFs, providing insights into the morphology-structure-composition evolution of the electrocatalyst at a nanoscale. This work demonstrates an in-situ growth strategy to achieve high-performance ultrathin MOF-based electrocatalysts, and provides advanced combinatorial characterization techniques to monitor the material growth process.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with attractive chemical and structural properties have been considered as prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, while the insufficient exposed active sites and low electrical conductivity of MOFs limit their electrocatalytic activity and further industrial applications. Herein, a unique strategy to remarkably boost electrocatalytic OER activity of one Ni-based MOF is developed by the simultaneous incorporation of Fe3+ ions and BF4- anions within its layer structure. The optimized electrocatalyst NiFe-MOF-BF4--0.3 NSs shows superior OER activity with a required ultralow overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1, and outstanding stability in an alkaline medium. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results verify that the interactions between metal (M) ions and BF4- anions (defined as M···F, M = Ni or Fe) in this catalyst can adjust the adsorption abilities of oxygen intermediates and lower the free energy barrier of the potential-determining step by tailoring its electronic structure, thereby remarkably boosting its OER activity. This protocol provides new insights into surface and structure engineering of 2D MOFs, leading to greatly enhanced electrocatalytic OER performance.

Abstract:As the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered to be a bottleneck in overall water splitting, it is necessary to develop a highly active and stable electrocatalyst to overcome this issue. Herein, we successfully fabricated a three-dimensional iron-dysprosium oxide co-regulated in-situ formed MOF-Ni arrays on carbon cloth (/CC) through a facile two-step hydrothermal method. Electrochemical studies demonstrate that the designed /CC catalyst requires an overpotential of only 251 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 52.1 mV dec−1. Additionally, the stability declined by only 5.5% after 80 h of continuous testing in 1.0 M KOH. Furthermore, a cell voltage of only 1.57 V in the overall water splitting system is sufficient to achieve 10 mA cm−2; this value is far better than that of most previously reported catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance originates from the unique 3D rhombus-like structure, as well as coupling synergies of Fe-Dy-Ni species. The combination of lanthanide and transition metal species in the synthesis strategy may open entirely new possibilities with promising potential in the design of highly active OER electrocatalysts.Hierarchical Fe-Dy oxide co-regulated MOF-Ni on carbon cloth was fabricated by a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The resulting catalyst exhibited highly active and stable oxygen evolution for the overall water splitting reaction in alkaline media.

Abstract:Refining synthesis strategies for metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts to improve their performance and stability in an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a big challenge. In this study, a series of nanostructured electrocatalysts were synthesized through a solvothermal method by growing MOFs and metal-triazolates (METs) on nickel foam (NF) substrates (named MET-M/NF, M = Fe, Co, Cu), and these electrocatalysts could be used directly as OER self-supporting electrodes. Among these electrocatalysts, MET-Fe/NF exhibited the best OER performance, requiring only an overpotential of 122 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and showing remarkable stability over 15 h. The experimental results uncovered that MET-Fe/NF underwent an in situ structural reconstruction, resulting in the formation of numerous iron/nickel (oxy)hydroxides with high OER activity. Furthermore, in a two-electrode water-splitting setup, MET-Fe/NF only required 1.463 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Highlighting its potential for practical applications. This work provides insight into the design and development of efficient MOF-based OER catalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting (EWS) for hydrogen production exhibits high-efficiency and cleanliness, making it promising solution to the energy problem and attracting widespread attention. However, the electrocatalytic efficiency is currently restricted by the four-electron transfer kinetics in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, developing high-performance catalyst materials holds the key to addressing this limitation. The Ni 3 N and Materials of Institute Lavoisior frameworks-53 (MIL-53) series metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising OER catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. In this research, we synthesized multilayered polymetallic MOF/Ni 3 N/NF electrodes with superhydrophilic/superaerophobic properties and impressive OER performances by a simple and cost-effective method. The synergistic effect of the multilayered structure enables rapid electron transfer, while more catalytically active sites were exposed by the growth of polymetallic MOFs. The resulting polymetallic NiFeCoCu-MOF/Ni 3 N/NF electrodes show a low overpotential of 235 mV when the current density is 10 mA cm −2 . This work provides a novel research approach for fabricating multilayered electrodes combined with transition metal nitrides and metal-organic frameworks materials, emphasizing their significant potential in the field of electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous interest due to their promising applications including electrocatalysis originating from their unique structural features. However, it remains a challenge to directly use MOFs for oxygen electrocatalysis because it is quite difficult to manipulate their dimension, composition, and morphology of the MOFs with abundant active sites. Here, a facile ambient temperature synthesis of unique NiCoFe-based trimetallic MOF nanostructures with foam-like architecture is reported, which exhibit extraordinary oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity as directly used catalyst in alkaline condition. Specifically, the (Ni2 Co1 )0.925 Fe0.075 -MOF-NF delivers a minimum overpotential of 257 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a small Tafel slope of 41.3 mV dec-1 and exhibits high durability after long-term testing. More importantly, the deciphering of the possible origination of the high activity is performed through the characterization of the intermediates during the OER process, where the electrochemically transformed metal hydroxides and oxyhydroxides are confirmed as the active species.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising platforms for preparing the efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, but few of them are directly employed as active components due to their poor electrical conductivity. Herein, a lamellar bimetallic MFN (MIL‐53(FeNi)) encapsulated in graphene aerogel‐grafted Ni foam was developed (denoted as MFN@GA/NF). The graphene aerogel (GA) provides abundant space for the in‐situ growth of MFN and functions as a"bridge"to connect nickel foam (NF) with MFN by virtue of good conductivity. Benefitting from its structural integrity, the obtained hierarchical MFN@GA/NF exhibited excellent OER performances in alkaline media with an overpotential of 250 mV (20 mA cm‐2) and 326 mV (200 mA cm‐2), as well as remarkable stability in continuous electrolysis for over 100 h. This work provides a new channel for engineering MOF‐based functional materials with featured architectures.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of ultrathin metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets and rational design of their nano/microstructures in favor of electrochemical catalysis is critical for their renewable energy applications. Herein, an in situ growth method is proposed to prepare the ultrathin NiFe MOF nanosheets with a thickness of 1.5 nm, which are vertically inlaid into a 3D ordered macroporous structure of NiFe hydroxide. The well-designed composite delivers an efficient electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and stable electrolysis as long as 10 h toward the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction, much superior to the state-of-the-art RuO2 electrocatalyst. A comprehensive analysis demonstrates that the excellent performance originates from the desirable combination of the highly exposed active centers in the ultrathin bimetallic MOF nanosheets, effective electron conduction between MOF nanosheets and ordered macroporous hydroxide, and efficient mass transfer across the hierarchically porous hybridization. This study sheds light on the exploration of powerful protocols to gain diverse high-performance MOF nanosheets and may open a perspective to achieve their efficient electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for producing hydrogen via water splitting. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide an opportunity for the facile preparation of high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts. In this work, we prepared iron-doped nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (Fe-Ni@NC) with a unique hierarchical porous structure by directly pyrolyzing the MOF precursor for effectively boosting OER. The Fe doping has a significant enhancement effect on the catalytic performance. The optimized Fe (5%)-Ni@NC catalyst represents a remarkable activity with an overpotential of 257 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and superior stability toward OER in 1.0 M KOH.

Abstract:It is known that the increase of catalyst loadings usually leads to activity decay owning to the increased mass transport limitations. And most catalyst electrodes are thus restricted to small mass loadings (0.1~1 mg cm-2). However, there are exceptions. Here we have reported the confined growth of nickel, iron-metal-organic framework (NiFe-MOF) electrodes characteristic of porous yet densely packed architectures. The NiFe-MOF electrode has shown elevated activities for the catalyst loadings increasing from 1 to 10 mg cm-2, and achieving excellent oxygen evolution at the practical levels of catalyst loading (~10 mg cm-2). Further detailed study reveals the NiFe-MOF electrode is composed of self-assembled MOF nanoribbons in 3D honeycomb architecture on a nickel foam substrate. The electrode can afford hierarchical macro-micro-porosity that facilitates fast mass transport, in addition to high catalyst loadings for securing strong durability. Consequently, NiFe-MOF electrodes are optimized to deliver the best oxygen evolution activities ever reported for MOFs, characteristic of a low overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm-2, and a prolonged stability up to 666 h at 100 mA cm-2 or 100 h at 500 mA cm-2

Abstract:The development of cheap, abundant, and highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgently needed for hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we demonstrate a novel OER electrocatalyst (NiFe(CN)5NO/Ni3S2) prepared by coupling Ni3S2 and a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) of NiFe(CN)5NO on nickel foam (NF) via a simple two-step route. The NiFe(CN)5NO/Ni3S2 electrocatalyst displays an interesting rod-like hierarchical architecture assembled by ultrathin nanosheets. The combination of NiFe(CN)5NO and Ni3S2 optimizes the electronic structure of the metal active sites and increases the electron transfer capability. Benefitting from the synergistic effect between Ni3S2 and the NiFe-MOF as well as the unique hierarchical architecture, the NiFe(CN)5NO/Ni3S2/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic OER activity with ultralow overpotentials of 162/197 mV at 10/100 mA cm-2 and an ultrasmall Tafel slope of 26 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH, which are far superior to those of the individual NiFe(CN)5NO, Ni3S2 and commercial IrO2 catalysts. In particular, unlike common metal sulfide-based electrocatalysts, the composition, morphology and microstructure of the NiFe-MOF/Ni3S2 composite electrocatalyst can be well retained after the OER, which endows it with fantastic long-term durability. This work offers a new strategy for the construction of novel and high-efficiency MOF-based composite electrocatalysts for energy applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as versatile templates for preparing transition metal compounds has received wide attention. Benefiting from their diversified spatial structure and controllable chemical constituents, they have become a research hotspot in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, Fe2Ni-MIL-88B MOF on nickel foam (Fe2Ni MOF/NF) has been prepared through a one-pot method growth process. Compared with Fe MOF/NF and Ni MOF/NF, the interaction between Fe3+ and Ni2+ in Fe2Ni MOF/NF accelerates the electron transfer through the oxygen of the ligand, leading to increased 3d orbital electron density of Ni, which enhances the activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution. Fe2Ni MOF/NF provides a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of 222 mV, and its Tafel slope is also very small, reaching 42.39 mV dec(-1). The success of the present Fe2Ni MOF/NF catalyst is attributed to the abundant active centers, the bimetallic clusters Fe2Ni-MIL-88B, the positive coupling effect between Ni and Fe metal ions in the MOF, and synergistic effect between the MOF and NF. Besides, Fe2Ni MOF/NF possesses excellent stability over 50 h of continuous operation, providing feasibility for commercial use.

Abstract:We recently reported that fear extinction, a form of inhibitory learning, is selectively blocked by systemic administration of L-type voltage-gated calcium channel (LVGCC) antagonists, including nifedipine, in mice. We here replicate this finding and examine three reduced contingency effects after vehicle or nifedipine (40 mg/kg) administration. In the first experiment, contingency reduction was achieved by adding USs to the training protocol (degraded contingency), a phenomenon thought to be independent of behavioral inhibition. In the second experiment, contingency reduction was achieved by varying the percentage of CS-US pairing, a phenomenon thought to be weakly dependent on behavioral inhibition. In the third and fourth experiments, contingency reduction was achieved by adding CSs to the training protocol (partial reinforcement), a phenomenon thought to be completely dependent on behavioral inhibition. We found that none of these reduced contingency effects was impaired by nifedipine. In a final experiment, we found that extinction conducted 1 or 3 h post-acquisition, but not immediately, was LVGCC-dependent. Taken together, the results suggest that reduced contingency effects and extinction depend on different molecular mechanisms and that LVGCC dependence of behavioral inhibition develops with time after associative CS-US learning.

Abstract:Oxygen electrocatalysis, exemplified by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is central to energy storage and conversion technologies such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water electrolysis. However, highly effective and inexpensive earth-abundant materials are sought after to replace the noble metal-based electrocatalysts currently in use. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon-based MOF derivatives have attracted considerable attention as efficient catalysts due to their exceedingly tunable morphologies, structures, compositions, and functionalization. Here, we report two-dimensional (2D) MOF/MOF derivative coupled arrays on nickel foam as binder-free bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts with enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability. Their remarkable electrochemical properties are primarily attributed to fully exposed active sites and facilitated charge-transfer kinetics. The coupled and hierarchical nanosheet arrays produced via our growth-pyrolysis-regrowth strategy offer promise in the development of highly active electrodes for energy-related electrochemical devices.
