Abstract:Tracing the anthropogenic fingerprint and potential nutrient release from sediments is crucial from ecological and economic perspectives, but the lack of effective and low-cost tracking techniques poses a significant challenge. Here, we investigate the optical properties and molecular composition of sedimentary dissolved organic matter (DOM) from surface sediments (n = 41) collected along the land-sea continuum of an industrialized and urbanized bay in China. We use optical techniques (UV–visible spectroscopy and Excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy) and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry for sedimentary DOM characterization. Five fluorescent components (C1-C5) are validated by Parallel Factor analysis (PARAFAC), representing diverse sources and types of sedimentary DOM, including aromatic/terrestrial, microbial, anthropogenic, and protein-like substances. Molecular analysis further reveals 14,052 unique compounds. Distinct molecular characteristics are identified for sedimentary dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), phosphorus (DOP), and sulfur (DOS). Sedimentary DOP exhibits the highest saturation, DON the highest aromaticity, and DOS the highest molecular weight. Optical parameters (e.g. fluorescence index) correlate significantly with specific molecular formulas of sedimentary DON, DOP, and DOS, suggesting that optical signatures can serve as a diagnostic tool for exploring internal nutrient release and point source pollution in aquatic ecosystems. This linkage will allow for efficient large-scale monitoring of sedimentary heteroatomic compound cycling in aquatic systems using optical techniques with robust interpretations, which has significant implications for sustainable watershed management.

Abstract:With the on-going boom in the construction of dam reservoirs all over the world, the sources and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in fluvial networks are expected to be altered. Considering the importance of DOM as a key biogeochemical component in inland waters, this might bring important ecological and environmental influences. However, limited information is available on the molecular composition of DOM in dam reservoirs. In this study, the spatial characteristics of DOM composition were investigated in Xiangxi tributary and mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest freshwater reservoir in the world. The concentration alteration of conservative cations revealed the water intrusion from mainstream into Xiangxi tributary, which mainly controlled the hydrological gradient. One tyrosine-like (C4), one tryptophan-like (C2), and two humic-like (C1 and C3) fluorescent components were identified in fluorescent DOM (FDOM) by parallel factor analysis (PAFACAC), potentially indicating algal, anthropogenic, and terrestrial inputs, respectively. Decreasing trends of C1, C3 and C4 components and an increasing trend of C2 component were observed from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, indicating higher terrestrial and algal inputs but lower anthropogenic inputs in Xiangxi tributary compared to mainstream. The Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization further revealed substantial heterogeneity of DOM at the molecular level. Interestingly, S-containing compounds related to synthetic surfactants were consistently detected, and their relative abundances showed an increasing trend from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, in agreement with the distribution of the anthropogenic derived C2 component. Meanwhile, numerous lignin-like S-containing compounds were identified, likely the result of the incorporation of sulfide ions to lignin-like CHO compounds. This study represents the first molecular level characterization of DOM in the TGR system, which should aid the design and implementation of more detailed future studies.
A new view into three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy for dissolved organic matter

Abstract:Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs) has been extensively used for dissolved organic matter (DOM) characterization. However, the application of 3D EEMs is constantly limited by issues such as contradictory component identification, confusing interpretation of spectral indicators, and inability to establish biodegradability. In this study, some improvements were proposed by investigating the 3D EEMs, spectral indicators, and degradability of the standard and representative DOM. To overcome the unclear identification of DOM components, it was recommended to partition 3D EEMs into three subareas: aromatic protein (New-I), humic-like (New-II), and soluble microbial by-product-like (New-III). Significant strong positive correlations ( ρ = 0.727, P < 0.001) were observed between fluorescence index (FI) and biological index (BIX), and (R = 0.809, P < 0.001) humification index (HIX) and specific ultraviolet absorbance of 254 nm (SUVA 254 ). Except for FI (R = -0.483, P = 0.023), no other spectral indicators ( P > 0.05) were found to be significantly correlated with molecular weight. As thence results, the FI and HIX were the most suitable indicators for evaluating DOM. The half-life (20 < 21 < 26 < 29 tryptophan > fulvic acid > protein > humic acid. The degradation dynamics were governed by first-order decay kinetics (R 2 = 0.91–0.99). This study clarified the fluorescence properties and degradability of DOM, as well as the reliability of spectral indicators. The degradation performance of individual DOM components engaged in the carbon cycling process was revealed, paving the path for further applications of 3D EEMs in DOM research.

Abstract:Biological degradation contributes significantly to aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM) turnover. Yet to date, the specific biological pathways involved in DOM degradation are still obscure. Here, we show how DOM changes in response to 28-d incubation in a karst river, via the combined fluorescent excitation-emission matrix (EEM) with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and peak picking. Tyrosine-, tryptophan- and UV humic-like components were identified as the primary DOM in original waters. Notable decreases of protein-like components were observed after 15°C incubation, suggesting preferential consumption of biogenic DOM. Elevated temperature (30°C), however, caused significant decreases in visible humic-like and terrestrial fulvic-like components, but an increase in UV humic-like components in comparison to 15°C incubation (p < 0.05). Humification index (HIX) decreased dramatically after 15°C incubation, indicating that biological processes regulated river DOM properties. Our results highlight the significant biogenic signals in karst rivers, and evidence that fluorescence measurement can decipher riverine DOM biodegradation as a useful approach.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in aqueous environments and is composed of different components that play different but important roles in the migration and the fate of pollutants, emergence of the disinfect byproduct, thus requiring quantitative characterization. However, until now, simultaneous quantification of the main contents in DOM, i.e., saccharides, proteins, and humic substances, has been difficult, impeding us from understanding and predicting the environmental behaviors of typical pollutants. In this work, a fluorescence approach based on the excitation emission matrix (EEM), combined with a new algorithm, denoted matrix reconstruction coupled with prior linear decomposition (MR-PLD), was developed to quantify multiple DOM simultaneously. First, a set of simulated water samples consisting of glucose, tryptones, and humic acid (HA) were analyzed using MR-PLD to validate the feasibility of the method. The DOM components could be reliably determined with a higher accuracy than parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and Parallel Factor Framework-Linear Regression (PFFLR), also with a more convenient procedure than conventional PLD. Second, both actual simulated and experimental methods were performed to test the anti-interference performance of MR-PLD, indicating that the quantification of DOM would not be significantly impacted by other fluorophores. Finally, several actual water samples from natural waters and wastewater treatment plants were also analyzed to confirm the robustness of this method in actual aqueous environments. This study provides a new approach to characterize DOM with EEM, contributing to its convenient concentration monitoring and the further exploration of the environmental impacts.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM), the primary participant of carbon and nitrogen cycle, has a great impact on the behavior and fate of organic pollutants and heavy metals in eutrophic lakes. The dynamic spectral properties of DOM fractions were revealed in an aquatic-terrestrial ecotone under the different types of land use. Composite soil samples of different depths (0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm) were collected from four different land uses along a disturbed-impact gradient in Taihu Lake, China, i.e., grassland (GRL), forest land (FOL), paddy field (PAF), and vegetable field (VEF). DOM mainly consisted of tyrosine-like material (TYLF), tryptophan-like material (TRLF), microbial humic-like material (MHLF), fulvic-like material (FLF) and humic-like material (HLF) within all soil profiles, where TRLF was the dominant component (61.30 %) using synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) combined with principal component analysis and Gaussian band fitting. Based on two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy with SFS and Fourier transform infrared, the variation order of DOM fractions was FLF → MHLF → HLF → TRLF → TYLF within the GRL soil profile, and MHLF exhibited an oppositive change with aliphatic OH and amide I in protein. The order of DOM fractions was MHLF → FLF → HLF → TYLF → TRLF within the FOL soil profile, and the change trend of MHLF remained oppositive with aliphatic OH and CO in ester. The order of DOM within the PAF soil profile fractions was TRLF → MHLF → HLF → TYLF → FLF, and changing trends of TYLF were oppositive to aliphatic OH, CH bending vibration, CH bending vibration and CO in ester. The order of DOM fractions was HLF → TYLF → TRLF → FLF → MHLF within the VEF soil profile, where the changing trend TYLF remained oppositive to aliphatic OH, CH deformations in lignin and aliphatic group and amide I in protein. This study may provide important support for alleviating lake water eutrophication or pollution.
Diagnosis of the Unexpected Fluorescent Contaminants in Quantifying Dissolved Organic Matter Using Excitation-Emission Matrix Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely present in aqueous environments and plays a significant role in pollutant mitigation and transformation. So far, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) has been widely applied to quantify fluorescent DOM. However, this approach fails to provide accurate concentration of DOM when fluorescent contaminants exist. In this work, a new method, prior linear decomposition (PLD), is developed to solve this problem by introducing prior information, i.e., EEMs of DOM, into data decomposition. First, EEM of humic acid (HA) with different numbers of random Gaussian peaks are tested to confirm the robustness of PLD. The percentages for the relative errors within 5% are found to be 97.7% and 69% using PLD and PARAFAC, respectively. Then, the determination of mixture of HA with several contaminants is performed, validating the feasibility of DOM quantification and capability of contaminant diagnosis using PLD for synthetic water samples. Finally, DOM-containing natural water samples collected from a polluted lake, river and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) are measured. The testing results confirm that PLD provides an accurate result with less evaluated error than PARAFAC and the EEMs of the contaminants can be inferred precisely. This work clearly demonstrates that PLD offers a robust approach for quantifying fluorescent DOM, which is of great significance in both natural and engineered aqueous environments.

Abstract:The hydrolysis effect of waste sludge after multi-enzyme and thermophilic bacteria pretreatments is investigated using excitation-emission matrix (EEM) with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) in this study. The compositional characteristics of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and dissolved organic matters (DOM) were analyzed to evaluate the sludge disintegration. The EPS and cell wall in sludge were disrupted after hydrolysis which led to carbohydrate, protein and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of DOM increasing in sludge supernatant. The bio-degradability level in the extracted fractions of EPS and DOM depending on the fluorescence zones was found after hydrolysis. The highest proportion of percent fluorescence response (Pi,n) in EPS and DOM was soluble microbial by-product and humic acid-like organics. A significant increase of humic acid-like organics in DOM after thermophilic bacteria hydrolysis was obtained. The assessment of hydrolysis using EEM coupled with FRI provided a new insight toward the bio-utilization process of waste sludge.
A novel-approach for identifying sources of fluvial DOM using fluorescence spectroscopy and machine learning model

Abstract:Rivers are well known as one of the most threatened aquatic environments, whose structure and water quality can be deeply impacted by intensive anthropogenic activities. Despite the fact that anthropogenic influences on river ecosystems could indeed be deduced from the composition and chemistry of fluvial dissolved organic matter (DOM), sources of anthropogenic loading to DOM are still poorly explored. Here, by uniting fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEM) and principal component absolute coefficient, four sources of DOM from seventeen rivers in major drainage basins of China could be identified, i.e., originating from municipal sewage, domestic wastewater, livestock wastewater, and natural origins, and thus being defined as MS-DOM, DW-DOM, LW-DOM, NO-DOM, respectively. Based on the random forest model, special nodes in EEM could be traced from four sources, respectively. According to parallel factor analysis, DOM mainly contained protein-like, microbial humic-like, and fulvic-like fluorescence substances, among which protein-like was dominant in MS-DOM and DW-DOM, microbial humic-like in LW-DOM, and fulvic-like in NO-DOM. Based on key peaks and essential nodes in EEM, the identifying source indices were first proposed, which could be introduced to simply distinguish the different anthropogenic-derived sources of fluvial DOM. It was associated with intensity ratios of the key peaks and the essential nodes of EEM spectra from four sources, i.e., municipal sewage (MS-SI: Ex/Em = 280/(335, 410) nm), domestic wastewater (DW-SI: Ex/Em = 280/(340, 410) nm), livestock wastewater (LW-SI: Ex/Em = 235/(345, 380) nm), and natural origins (NO-SI: Ex/Em = 260/(380, 430) nm). By statistical analysis, the high identifying source indices of municipal sewage (>0.5) and natural origins (>0.4) values could be related to MS-DOM and NO-DOM, respectively. The identifying source indices of domestic wastewater with 0.1–0.3 might be linked to DW-DOM and the identifying source indices of livestock wastewater with 0.3–0.4 to LW-DOM. Compared with conventional optical indices, the novel identifying source indices showed remarkable discrimination for the sources of fluvial DOM with different forms of anthropogenic disturbances. Hence the innovative approach could be relatively convenient and accurate to evaluate water quality or pollution risk in river ecosystems.

Abstract:UV-visible spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) combined with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) were applied for extracting fluorescence components, tracing organic functional groups, and revealing variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Puhe River. Water samples were collected from the mainstream and two tributaries (Nanxiaohe River and Huangnihe River). DOM in three rivers was composed of protein-like fluorescent (PLF), microbial humus-like fluorescent (MHLF), fulvic-like fluorescent (FLF), and humic-like fluorescent components, which were relative to aromatic groups, phenolic groups, carboxylic groups, and microbial products. The PLF and MHLF were dominated in DOM fractions in the rivers, and the average content of the PLF was the highest in Nanxiaohe River. Humification degree of DOM was the highest in Puhe River, followed by Huangnihe River and Nanxiaohe River. However, molecular mass of DOM in Puhe River was the lowest, followed by Huangnihe River and Nanxiaohe River. Based on the 2D-COS of the SFS and UV-visible spectra, the variation order of DOM fractions in Puhe River was PLF → MHLF → FLF, and the PLF was consistent with the phenolic groups, aromatic groups, and carboxylic groups, but the adverse trend with the microbial products. The variation order in Nanxiaohe River was MHLF → PLF → FLF, and the MHLF was consistent with the aromatic groups, phenolic groups, carboxylic groups, and microbial products. The variation order in Huangnihe River was MHLF → PLF → FLF too, and the PLF was consistent with the carboxylic groups and aromatic groups. The results of the present study demonstrate that UV-visible spectroscopy and SFS combined with 2D-COS are useful methods to characterize structural composition of DOM from urban black and stinky rivers so as to investigate their pollution status.

Abstract:Effluent organic matter from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is an important source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urban rivers worldwide and is an important water quality factor. Identifying the fate of DOM in urban river is crucial for water quality management. To address this concern, a fluorescent flux budget approach was conducted to probe the fate of DOM in WWTP effluent-dominated urban river, in combination with field measurement and fluorescence fingerprinting. An urban river receiving two WWTP effluents in Hefei City, China was chosen as the study site, where longitudinal measurements of river hydrology and water quality were performed. The fluorescence fingerprinting revealed the presence of two humic-like components (C1, C4), one fulvic-like component (C2) and one protein-like component (C3) in this investigated river, among which C2 and C4 were indicative of anthropogenic influences, closely associated with treated effluents. For each fluorescent component, the WWTP effluent contributed over 80 % of the total fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) input in this river. Using the developed FDOM flux budget model, it was found that the C1 and C3 were almost conserved within the waterbody, while the C2 and C4 experienced losses due to biogeochemical reactions. The decay rates of C2 and C4 were estimated to be 0.109-0.174 d-1 and 0.096-0.320 d-1, respectively. Spatial heterogeneity of decay rates for C2 and C4 were associated with the varied chemistries of the lateral input sources including two treated effluents and one tributary flow. Our study highlights that after treated effluent is released into the receiving waterbody, the FDOM would undergo loss from the waters particularly for anthropogenic fulvic-like substance C2 and humic-like substance C4. Additionally, the quantified FDOM decay rate in actual urban water environment provides insights for river water quality management, especially when using DOM as the surrogate indicator of organic pollutants.
Fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter in several independent water bodies: possible sources and land-use effects

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems. Most previous works have focused on the source, migration, and transformation of DOM in the same water body at several sampling sites, but few studies have focused on the differences in DOM among numerous independent water bodies. This study aimed to investigate the fluorescence properties of DOM and its relationships with water quality indexes, eutrophication levels, and land use in corresponding water catchments in several independent water bodies. Five fluorescent components were identified by the EEM-PARAFAC method in the current study. The UVC humic-like component C1 (λEx/Em = 255/454 nm) and UVA humic-like component C2 (λEx/Em = 260/474 nm) were derived from terrestrial plant decomposition or soil organic matter. The UVA humic-like component C3 (λEx/Em = 300/382 nm) was produced by microbial decomposition. The tryptophan-like component C4 (λEx/Em = 280/330 nm) and the tyrosine-like component C5 (λEx/Em = 225(280)/298 nm) were caused by the discharge of sewage. Farmland contributed more to DOC concentration, humic-like components (C1-C3), and humification index (HIX) than did forest and grassland. The maximum fluorescence intensities of C1, C2, C3, and lna(254) were positively related to the trophic state index (TSI), suggesting that humic-like components and lna(254) could be used as indicators to reflect the eutrophication levels of several independent water bodies.

This study employed fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy combined with principal component coefficients, parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), co-occurrence network analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine changes of DOM fractions from surface water to shallow groundwater in a mesoscale lowland river basin. Combining stable isotope and hydrochemical parameters, except for surface water (SW), two groups of groundwater samples were defined, namely, deeply influenced by surface water (IGW) and groundwater nearly non-influenced by surface water (UGW), which were 50.34 % and 19.39 % recharged by surface water, respectively. According to principal component coefficients, reassembled EEM data of these categories highlighted variations of the tyrosine-like peak in DOM. EEMs coupled with PARAFAC extracted five components (C1-C5), i.e. C1, protein-like substances, C2 and C4, humic-like substances, and C3 and C5, microbial-related substances. The abundance of the protein-like was SW > IGW > UGW, while the order of the humic-like was opposite. The bacterial communities exhibited an obvious cluster across three regions, which hinted their sensitivity to variations in environmental conditions. Based on co-occurrence, SW represented the highest connectivity between bacterial OTUs and DOM fractions, followed by IGW and UGW. SEM revealed that microbial activities increased bioavailability of the humic-like in the SW and IGW, whereas microbial compositions promoted the evolution of humic-like substances in the UGW. Generally, these results could be conducive to discern dissimilarity in DOM fractions across surface water and shallow groundwater, and further trace their interactions in the river watershed.

Abstract:Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy has been widely applied in the characterization of dissolved organic matter(DOM). The complicated overlapping between a variety of fluorescent substances in the fluorescence excitation-emission matrix dataset is difficult to further qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the characterization, source and the correlations of fluorescent components with specific environmental behaviors.Several data analysis methods for the excitationemission matrix spectrum, including traditional peak-picking, fluorescence regional integration(FRI) and parallel factor analysis(PARAFAC) were reviewed. In addition, a latest study on the combination of high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)/high-performance size-exclusion chromatography(HPSEC) with fluorescence and PARAFAC was also introduced.Meanwhile a comprehensive comparison was conducted for these methods. The development direction of three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy was also prospected.

Abstract:Fluorescence fingerprint technique was used to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM) in river from different sources. The results showed that two types of DOM fluorescence signals were observed in river water: a humic-like fluorescence with three maxima at lambda(ex)/lambda(em)=250/460 nrn(A1), 220/400 nm(A2) and 325/420 nm(C); and a protein-like fluorescence with two maxima at lambda(ex)/lambda(en) = 230/360 nm(T2) and 285/357 nm(T1). The intensity of both of protein-like fluorescence distinctly increased because of the domestic wastewater drainage in the tributary stream. After the tributary converges into the main stream, the Fe3+ concentration in the main stream is 30 times as much as that of tributary stream, and the visible blue-shift of humic-like fluorescence occurred while the others didn't occur. Abstract:Longitudinal patterns of dissolved organic matter (DOM) influence the biogeochemical cycle in river ecosystems. Yet, linkages between DOM quality and bacterial degradation of emerging contaminants over a river continuum are unclear. In combination with DOM characterization, bioassay, and microbial analysis, this study unraveled the spatial variations of DOM composition and biodegradability as well as bacterial community structures, which determined the estrone biodegradation potential (EBP) along the mainstream in Three Gorges Reservoir during impoundment period. While urban and agricultural utilization increased the protein-like and biodegradable DOM components (BDOC%) in upstream, the in-situ biotransformation preferentially utilized tryptophan-like substances followed by tyrosine-like substances, resulting in the accumulated recalcitrant DOM with higher aromaticity, molecular weight, and humic-like components in downstream. Due to the promotion of biodegradable DOM on bacterial abundances, a significant and positive correlation was constructed between BDOC% and EBP ( P < 0.001, R 2 = 0.56), both of which were controlled by the ratio of fresh- to humic-like fluorescence. Nevertheless, a higher biomass-normalized EBP was found under recalcitrant conditions in downstream, demonstrating that the degradation function was also associated with the biogeographical distribution of bacterial communities. Results of microbial ecology revealed that the in-situ transformation of aromatic and humic-like DOM exhibited more correlations with bacterial taxa than protein-like DOM, leading to increased diversity and decreased niche breadths along the mainstream. The triggered deterministic selection of community assemblages in downstream favored potential estrone-degraders and up-regulated their specific metabolic capacity. These findings will provide critical insights toward understanding the crucial role of DOM in biogeochemical cycles and the self-purification of emerging contaminants along the river continuum.

Abstract:Fluorescence spectroscopy holds promise as a rapid tracer of performance in decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) that may reduce the monitoring burden on communities. In this study, we examined changes in chemical oxygen demand (COD), fluorescence-based indices, and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modeled components under normal operation and during periods of disturbance at the time of scum removal in real decentralized treatment settings and in laboratory simulated wastewater treatment with an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR). Amino acid-like Peaks T and B and PARAFAC component C2 (with excitation/emission peak at 281/335 nm) decreased from influent to effluent due to preferential degradation of labile organic compounds, and the C2 decrease was significantly correlated (p < 0.01) with COD removal. The humification index (HIX) increased by ~190% on average from influent to effluent during normal operation of all of the anaerobic and aerobic DEWATS evaluated in this study, further supporting the preferential removal of labile constituents during treatment. Meanwhile, a newly identified component, C3, with excitation between 410 and 420 nm and emission at 470 nm, increased under normal operation and may represent the formation of coenzyme 420 during biodegradation. Disturbance during scum removal disrupted preferential removal of Peak T and resulted in a much lower change in HIX (only 24% increase) from influent to effluent. Recirculation of effluent into the influent stream was found to greatly reduce scum formation in lab-based ABRs while still maintaining a high removal of COD and Peak T and producing substantial increase in HIX. The fluorescence-based indices were found to be robust indicators for tracking performance issues in DEWATS.

Abstract:Excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined with multivariable analysis was employed to discriminate structural component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Xihe River, an urban river, located in western Shenyang City of China, and to reveal its correlation with water quality. Eight water samples were collected along the river across the centralized wastewater-discharge region and the dispersed wastewater-discharge region. Water quality had deeply deteriorated in the river. Based on DOM fluorescence spectroscopic properties, DOM was composed of tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, soluble microbial by-product-like, fulvic-like and humic-like materials, among which protein-like material was dominant in the DOM fractions. The DOM in the centralized wastewater-discharge region had a lower level of aromaticity than that in the dispersed wastewater-discharge region, and its humification degree was lower than that in the latter too. Key factors for the trophic state contained NH 4 -N, DO, DOC, TP, Φ 2, n and Φ 4, n by multivariable analysis. DOM was mainly derived from treated and untreated industrial wastewater with weak biodegradability.
