Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in municipal wastewater was mainly characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) with multi-excitation/emission fluorescence scan. Meanwhile, fluorescence excitation-emission-matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was also applied. Compared with chromatography fluorescence fingerprints, the EEM-PARAFAC model could not reflect the variety of DOM species with similar fluorescence but different physicochemical properties. The chromatography results showed that the protein-like species were variable among different municipal wastewater treatment plants, some of which are in combination with humic-like species; while there were two major humic-like species fractionated by hydrophilicity and molecular weight (MW), which are also the major contributors to UV absorbance at 254 nm. It was also identified that the relatively hydrophilic humic fractions were slightly larger than the relatively hydrophobic humic fractions. In all the investigated wastewater treatment plants, the relatively hydrophilic and larger MW humic fraction mainly contributed to the fluorescence intensity of humic-like EEM-PARAFAC components. As well as facilitating interpretations of EEM-PARAFAC components, the HPLC/HPSEC fluorescence fingerprints also contributed to a better understanding of fluorescent DOM species in municipal wastewater.

Abstract:Excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined with multivariable analysis was employed to discriminate structural component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Xihe River, an urban river, located in western Shenyang City of China, and to reveal its correlation with water quality. Eight water samples were collected along the river across the centralized wastewater-discharge region and the dispersed wastewater-discharge region. Water quality had deeply deteriorated in the river. Based on DOM fluorescence spectroscopic properties, DOM was composed of tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, soluble microbial by-product-like, fulvic-like and humic-like materials, among which protein-like material was dominant in the DOM fractions. The DOM in the centralized wastewater-discharge region had a lower level of aromaticity than that in the dispersed wastewater-discharge region, and its humification degree was lower than that in the latter too. Key factors for the trophic state contained NH 4 -N, DO, DOC, TP, Φ 2, n and Φ 4, n by multivariable analysis. DOM was mainly derived from treated and untreated industrial wastewater with weak biodegradability.
Unravelling Relationships Between Fluorescence Spectra, Molecular Weight Distribution and Hydrophobicity Fraction of Dissolved Organic Matter in Municipal Wastewater.

Abstract:The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the influent and secondary effluent from 6 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were investigated with a size exclusion chromatogram (SEC) coupled with multiple detectors to simultaneously detect ultraviolet absorbance, fluorescence, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) as a function of molecular weight (MW). The SEC chromatograms showed that biopolymers (>6 kDa) and humic substances (0.5-6 kDa) comprised the significant fraction in the influent, while humic substances became the abundant proportion in the secondary effluent. Direct linkages between MW distribution and hydrophobicity of DOM in the secondary effluent were further explored via SEC analysis of XAD resin fractions. DON and DOC with different hydrophobicity exhibited significantly distinct MW distribution, indicating that it was improper to consider DOC as a surrogate for DON. Different from DOC, the order of averaged MW in terms of DON was hydrophobic neutral transphilic neutral > hydrophobic acid > transphilic acid > hydrophilic fraction. Fluorescence spectral properties exhibited a significant semi-quantitative correlation with MW and hydrophobicity of DOC, with Pearson's coefficients of -0.834 and 0.754 (p < 0.01) for biopolymer and humic substances. Meanwhile, regional fluorescence proportion was demonstrated to indicate the MW and hydrophobicity properties of DON at the semi-quantitative level. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) could be explored to provide a rapid estimation of MW distribution and hydrophobic/hydrophilic proportion of DOC and DON in WWTPs.
Distribution and Removal of Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter in 15 Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants in China.

Abstract:Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), having complex structures like aromatic structure and double bond structure, is able to represent relatively refractory parts of dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study investigated the distribution of FDOM in the influents and the removal in the secondary effluents of 15 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in 15 provincial capitals of China. Eight components have been identified using excitation emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). Tryptophan-like (C1 or C4), terrestrial humic-like (C2) and microbial humic-like (C3) fluorescent components were major FDOM components in municipal wastewater, appearing in 11 WWTPs simultaneously. The removal of total fluorescence was generally about 30%-40%, while hydrophobic humic-like compounds (C5 and C8) were the most refractory components with 4%-16% removal and C3 was the second most refractory with -11%-41% removal. The compositions of FDOM in municipal wastewater were different in northeast/west and middle/east regions according to the self-organized map (SOM) analysis. Wastewater sources had more important influence on fluorescent characteristics of secondary effluents than biological treatment processes. Besides, this study found that humification index (HIX) was the most suitable index to describe the bulk fluorescent character of wastewater since it had a good correlation with abundance, removal and ratios of main fluorescent components either in the influents or in the secondary effluents. Novel Insights into Variation of Dissolved Organic Matter During Textile Wastewater Treatment by Fluorescence Excitation Emission Matrix

Abstract:In this work, the textile wastewater samples along two full-scale treatment trains ('biological+ oxidative' process) were characterized by fluorescence excitation emission matrix (EEM). Four fluorescent components (C1-C4) were identified by parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. The polarity and apparent molecular weight (MW) of C1-C4 were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). By comparison of EEM spectra and HPLC chromatograms, the tyrosine-like component (C1) and the tryptophan-like components (C2 and C3) were related to Dispersant MF. Component C4 with two emission peaks suggested the formation of an intramolecular exciplex. Despite the remarkable difference of untreated textile wastewater, the polarity and apparent MW of C1-C4 as well as their variations along the treatment trains were highly similar between different wastewater treatment plants. The weights distribution of Dispersant MF among C1-C4 indicates its dominance in the protein-like fluorescence of textile wastewater. Component C1-C4 had different fate in various treatment stages. C1-C4 were poorly removed (< 25%) during the anaerobic or anoxic process. A better removal efficiency of C3 (65%-80%) than C1, C2 and C4 (15%-50%) was achieved in the aerobic process. Both Fenton and chlorination process could significantly decrease the concentrations of C1-C4 (70%-100%). The concentration of C2 was strongly correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and UV absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254). The fluorescence of C2 could be proposed as an indicator of COD and a supplement to UVA254 to evaluate treatment efficiency of textile wastewater. The results provide a better understanding of DOM variation of textile wastewater during treatment.

Abstract:Textile printing and dyeing is one of the major industrial sectors in Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province and textile wastewater was received by many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Jiangyin City. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was the major removal target during the wastewater treatment process. Due to fast and convenient measurement, high sensitivity and moderate selectivity, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) has been extensively used to characterize DOM in various water bodies. In this study, the DOM components of the effluents from the main WWTPs in Jiangyin were investigated by EEM. The SUV254 values of the effluents were 1. 42 similar to 5. 71 L . (mg . m)(-1), which indicated higher aromaticity than treated municipal wastewater. The effluents generally exhibited two protein-like fluorophores. The protein-like fluorescence intensity per unit of DOC of the effluents from the WWTPs employing biological or "biological + coagulation" process (>2. 86 R. U. L . mg(-1)) was much higher than that of the effluents from the WWTPs with strong oxidation process (<0. 60 R. U. . L . mg(-1)) , which was ascribed to the decomposition of aromatic structure of protein-like fluorescent DOM by strong oxidation. The effluents from about 33% of the WWTPs showed humic-like fluorescence with a higher humification index than the effluents from the other WWTPs. Two parallel factor analysis obtained two protein-like components with the peaks at 225, 280/320 nm and 230, 285/ 340 nm and one humic-like component with the peak at 240/415 nm. These protein-like fluorophores could be mainly ascribed to Dispersant MF, a kind of common commercial dye additives to improve the dispersion performance of vat and disperse dyes. The main components of Dispersant MF are the formaldehyde condensates of sulfonated washing oil, which are poorly biodegradable. The findings of this work contributed to a profound understanding of the DOM composition in the effluents from the WWTPs in Jiangyin, which was significant to optimization of the treatment process and development of advanced treatment process.

Abstract:Urban domestic wastewater is a significant source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments, critically impacting urban water quality. This study integrates the optical properties and molecular features of DOM, providing a comprehensive understanding of its behavior in urban sanitary sewage. Utilizing ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, three-dimensional synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS), we establish a robust bidirectional correlation between optical properties and molecular characteristics. Our findings reveal that urban domestic wastewater is predominantly composed of protein-like substances and microbial humic components, rich in heteroatoms and homologous compounds. The established correlations between optical and molecular features validate the DOM characterization system, demonstrating consistency between photochemical properties and molecular characteristics. Molecules related to photochemical parameters align with high H/C and low O/C ratio regions. The correlation analysis indicates that the highly associated areas are the fluorescent domains of protein-like materials and microbially derived humic-like substances. This innovative approach provides actionable insights for urban water quality management, highlighting the critical role of these methods in effective environmental monitoring.

Abstract:To assess removal efficiency of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), fluorescence excitation emission matrices (EEM) with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and second derivative synchronous fluorescence (SDSF) were used for the characterization of DOM in wastewater. In A(2)/O process, tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like materials were removed to the much greater extent than that of fulvic-like. The protein-like material might be mostly decomposed by anaerobic and aerobic bacteria in anaerobic/anoxic and oxic zones. C1, C2, I276, I286, AP1 and AP2 were much better in tracing variations of tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like materials than C3, I329 and AF1 in tracing fulvic-like. The number of sampling sites should be reduced, as concentration variations of DOM components were subtle among sampling sites in the oxic zone and secondary sedimentation tank. SDSF may be a useful tool as PARAFAC to monitor removal efficiency of DOM fractions from wastewater in the WWTP.
Unraveling the evolution of dissolved organic matter in full-scale A/A/O wastewater treatment process using size exclusion chromatography with PARAFAC and nonnegative matrix factorization analysis

Abstract:Changes in spectral features and molecular weight (MW) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) along the A/A/O processes in eight full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were characterized using size exclusion chromatography with a diode array detector, a fluorescence detector and an organic carbon detector in tandem (SEC-DAD-FLD-OCD) as well as bulk water quality parameters. The parallel factor (PARAFAC) and the nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) analyses have been effectively applied to the postprocessing of SEC-FLD fingerprints and SEC-OCD chromatograms, respectively. Individual SEC-FLD-PARAFAC or SEC-OCD-NMF components may span a broad range of MW, indicating that these SEC fractions within the same component were cognate and varied coherently across the dataset samples. The SEC-FLD-PARAFAC modeling and SEC-OCD-NMF analysis have clearly and concisely presented that the dramatic decreases of dissolved organic carbon, UV absorbance at 254 nm and protein-like fluorescence at Ex280/Em350 nm in the anaerobic process were primarily associated with the degradation of the large MW proteinaceous and polysaccharide-like biopolymers. It has also revealed that fluorescence of humic acid-like fractions increased significantly during the anaerobic process, but fluorescence of fulvic acid-like and humic substances’ building blocks decreased slightly. Laboratory experiments further confirmed the presence of the humification process in anaerobic processes, and the formation of humic acid-like fluorophores may be associated with carbohydrate metabolism. The combination of SEC-FLD-PARAFAC and SEC-OCD-NMF helped to establish the links between changes in bulk water quality parameters and the evolution of SEC MW fractions, which provides a more in-depth insight into wastewater DOM treatability and enables the optimization of wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in municipal wastewater can have a detrimental effect on aquatic ecosystems, as DOM can participate in the global carbon cycle and change the transport of other pollutants. The characteristics of DOM can also affect the utilization efficiency of dissolved organic carbon by microorganisms in water. In this study, variations in DOM quantity and quality in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) coupled with a hybrid constructed wetland (CW) system during cold periods were characterized by using excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). The results showed that the DOM concentration significantly decreased after exiting the WWTP, while a slight increase was found in the CW. The coupled system could significantly eliminate influent DOM with a removal efficiency of 92.1%. The CW system could still remove DOM even in winter. Five fluorescent components, including three humic-like components, one protein-like component and one tyrosine-like component, were identified. Although the biological treatment process in the WWTP contributed a large number of protein-like substances, the optical indices showed that the bioavailability of wastewater was gradually reduced, indicating that DOM was selectively removed by the integrated system. Moreover, there were significant correlations between water quality parameters and DOM indices. This study could contribute to a better understanding of the elimination process of dissolved organic carbon in coupled systems of WWTPs and CWs and offer novel ideas for organic carbon resource recovery and water quality monitoring in watershed environments.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems. Most previous works have focused on the source, migration, and transformation of DOM in the same water body at several sampling sites, but few studies have focused on the differences in DOM among numerous independent water bodies. This study aimed to investigate the fluorescence properties of DOM and its relationships with water quality indexes, eutrophication levels, and land use in corresponding water catchments in several independent water bodies. Five fluorescent components were identified by the EEM-PARAFAC method in the current study. The UVC humic-like component C1 (λEx/Em = 255/454 nm) and UVA humic-like component C2 (λEx/Em = 260/474 nm) were derived from terrestrial plant decomposition or soil organic matter. The UVA humic-like component C3 (λEx/Em = 300/382 nm) was produced by microbial decomposition. The tryptophan-like component C4 (λEx/Em = 280/330 nm) and the tyrosine-like component C5 (λEx/Em = 225(280)/298 nm) were caused by the discharge of sewage. Farmland contributed more to DOC concentration, humic-like components (C1-C3), and humification index (HIX) than did forest and grassland. The maximum fluorescence intensities of C1, C2, C3, and lna(254) were positively related to the trophic state index (TSI), suggesting that humic-like components and lna(254) could be used as indicators to reflect the eutrophication levels of several independent water bodies.

Abstract:Abstract The components and sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urban water bodies are extremely complicated due to multiple environmental and anthropogenic factors. The comprehensive analysis of the DOM molecular composition is crucial for deep understanding their reactivities, environmental behaviors, and fates in aquatic ecosystems, thereby improving our ability to monitor and protect aquatic systems. In this study, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis) and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM) were combined with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) to investigate the optical and molecular characteristics of DOM in the Yongding River (YDH) and Beiyun River (BYH), two typical urban rivers with distinct landscapes and anthropogenic influences in Beijing, China. Results showed that DOM in BYH was mainly composed of proteins from microbial and sewage sources with low aromaticity, molecular weight, and abundant saturated labile compounds, along with a significant presence of anthropogenic surfactants. Whereas the YDH was primarily composed of humic substances from plant- and soil-derived terrestrials, with higher aromaticity humification, unsaturation and refractory compounds. In addition, due to the accumulation of refractory compounds, the concentration of DOC and the degree of organic pollution increased from upstream to downstream of the rivers, manifested as an increase in humification and molecular weight at the molecular level. Our results confirmed that landscape urbanization broadly modified the structure of DOM to be more aliphatic and saturated. The findings of this study will provide important insights into the chemdiverse molecular composition of DOM undergoing different influences from human activities and provide significant guidance for water quality management in urban river ecosystems. Abstract:Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence with self-organizing map was applied to characterize structural composition and spatial distribution of dissolved (DOM) and particulate (POM) organic matter from sediment pore water in a typical urban river. Ten sediment pore water samples were collected from the mainstream of Baitabuhe River in Shenyang City of northeast China, along a human impact gradient, i. e. river source, rural and urban regions. DOM and POM were extracted from the pore water, and their EEM fluorescence spectra were measured. ƒ450/500 of DOM ranged from 1.82 to 1.91, indicating that DOM is mainly from microbial source; ƒ450/500 of POM ranged from 1.42 to 1.68, suggesting that POM derived from land. Four components were identified from DOM and POM fractions by self-organizing map, which included tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, fulvic-like and humic-like matters. Tyrosine-like originated from fresh and less-degraded material with a high potential for oxida- tion, which was considered as representative components of DOM and POM. Tryptophan-like was associated with microbial byproduct-like material, and can indicate microbial activities. The abundance sum of all components in DOM is roughly 2 times more than that in POM. The mean relative abundance of tyrosine-like was more than 50%, while tryptophan-like was about 18.6%-23.1%. Abundance of fulvic-like was much more than that of humic-like, but they were only a small proportion of organic matter fractions. Based on principal component analysis, the characteristics of DOM and POM distinctly were distributed along river source, rural region and urban region, proving that the river was deeply influenced by human activity.

Abstract:Effluent organic matter from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is an important source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urban rivers worldwide and is an important water quality factor. Identifying the fate of DOM in urban river is crucial for water quality management. To address this concern, a fluorescent flux budget approach was conducted to probe the fate of DOM in WWTP effluent-dominated urban river, in combination with field measurement and fluorescence fingerprinting. An urban river receiving two WWTP effluents in Hefei City, China was chosen as the study site, where longitudinal measurements of river hydrology and water quality were performed. The fluorescence fingerprinting revealed the presence of two humic-like components (C1, C4), one fulvic-like component (C2) and one protein-like component (C3) in this investigated river, among which C2 and C4 were indicative of anthropogenic influences, closely associated with treated effluents. For each fluorescent component, the WWTP effluent contributed over 80 % of the total fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) input in this river. Using the developed FDOM flux budget model, it was found that the C1 and C3 were almost conserved within the waterbody, while the C2 and C4 experienced losses due to biogeochemical reactions. The decay rates of C2 and C4 were estimated to be 0.109-0.174 d-1 and 0.096-0.320 d-1, respectively. Spatial heterogeneity of decay rates for C2 and C4 were associated with the varied chemistries of the lateral input sources including two treated effluents and one tributary flow. Our study highlights that after treated effluent is released into the receiving waterbody, the FDOM would undergo loss from the waters particularly for anthropogenic fulvic-like substance C2 and humic-like substance C4. Additionally, the quantified FDOM decay rate in actual urban water environment provides insights for river water quality management, especially when using DOM as the surrogate indicator of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as chemical composition, molecular weight (MW) distribution and hydrophobic/hydrophilic distribution can affect wastewater treatment efficiency, effluent quality and ecological risk. Fluorescence spectroscopy could provide a quick estimate of DOM characteristics during the monitoring of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, the characteristic and quantitative correlation of DOM from 14 anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAO) processes of WWTPs located in different provinces (municipalities) of China were investigated. The results showed that DOM of MW <1 kDa was the largest group of DOM in influent and secondary effluent, and DOM removal increased as the MW increased. Hydrophilic (HPI) fraction and hydrophobic acid (HPO-A) comprised the major portion of DOM in influent and secondary effluent and exhibited the lowest rate of removal. In addition, DOM concentrations in the northern provinces were higher than in the southern provinces, which were related to the water quality, economy and population. There were positive correlations between specific fluorescence intensity (SFI) and the MW <1 kDa, 1-5 kDa and 10 kDa fractions. The smaller the molecular weight, the better the correlation. Strong positive correlations between regional fluorescence proportion (f(i)) and HPI were found. SFI and f(i) may be explored as potential indicators of the MW fractions and the hydrophobic/hydrophilic distribution of DOM in AAO processes WWTPs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Characterization of fluorescent dissolved organic matters in metalworking fluid by fluorescence excitation-emission matrix and high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:In recent years, precise environment supervision has gradually become vital in water pollution control, which requires the clear identification of dissolved organic matters (DOM) in wastewater. Metalworking fluid (MWF) is a type of wastewater with high toxicity. Over ten million m(3) of MWF is discharged per year. However, its DOM characteristics have not yet been systematically investigated. Therefore, in this study, the fluorescent DOM (FDOM) of MWF was firstly characterized by excitation-emission matrixparallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Three fluorescent components (C1-C3) of the MWF from three metalworking plants (BO, TH, and YD) were identified. The peaks measured for Cl and C3 were attributed to tryptophan-like (Peak T) and humid fulvic acid-like (Peak A + C) peaks, respectively, and the peaks at C2 were identified as humic-like (Peak A + M) or tryptophan-like (Peak T) peaks. There were differences in the C2 and C3 components of MWF from the three metalworking plants. The FDOM of MWF from the three metalworking plants exhibited similar polarity, but different apparent molecular weight distributions. In addition, the highest intensities of the three fluorescent peaks were sensitive to variations in the pH, humic acid (HA) concentrations, and metal ion levels (Cu2+, Fe3+, and Ni2+). The findings of this study not only indicate the FDOM characteristics of MWF, but also provide a promising method and valuable guidance for the practical monitoring of MWF in natural water bodies. Abstract:This study aims to extend and demonstrate the application of fluorescence spectroscopy for monitoring the water quality of three differently operated full-scale drinking water treatment plants located in the Shenzhen city (China). A ratio of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), which describes relative changes in humic-like to protein-like fluorescence, was used to explain mechanisms behind the physicochemical processes. The fluorescence components obtained through individual and combined parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modeling revealed the presence of humic-like (C1) and protein-like (C2) structures in the DOM. The C1/C2 ratio provided a direct relationship between the seasonal variations and DOM composition. Wet season generated DOM enriched with humic-like fluorescence, while dry season caused a higher release of protein-like fluorescence. The fluorescence ratio presented unique patterns of DOM in treatment trains. The chemical pretreatment and disinfection unit processes showed a higher tendency to remove the humic-like fluorescence. However, the C1/C2 ratio increased during physical treatment processes such as coagulation-precipitation and sand filtration, indicating preferential removal of protein-like fluorescence. The DOM composition in influent directly (R2 = 0.77) influenced the relative intensities of fluorescence components in the treated water. Compared to the dry season, the wet season caused significant changes in DOM composition and produced treated water enriched with humic-like fluorescence. This fluorescence ratio offers an approach to explore the role of different treatment units and determine the factors affecting the composition of DOM in the surface water and drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract:In this study, size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled with multiple detectors was used to characterize the composition, molecular weight (MW), and optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Yangtze River main stream and its 88 tributaries. The SEC chromatograms revealed that DOM in the investigated water samples mainly comprised nonhumic proteinaceous biopolymers with apparent MW > 20 kDa and humic substances with apparent MW ranging from similar to 0.5 to similar to 7 kDa. The SEC fluorescence chromatograms further unraveled that there was a kind of characteristic fulvic-acid-like fluorophore in downstream tributaries, which showed triple-excitation peaks at similar to 250, 310, and 365 nm with an emission peak at similar to 460 nm (designated as HS-Em460-Ex3 hereinafter). Via field investigation and parallel factor analysis, this characteristic HS-Em460-Ex3 fluorophore was identified to originate from the discharge of residual naphthol and naphthylamine moieties in biologically treated textile wastewater. The SEC fluorescence fingerprints also demonstrated the occurrence of the characteristic HS-Em460-Ex3 fluorophore in the Yangtze River main stream from Changzhou to Nantong, suggesting that the discharge of textile wastewater might have altered the optical properties of riverine DOM and advanced treatment processes should be applied to eliminate residual aromatic fluorophores in textile wastewater.

Abstract:The conventional parameters such as COD and BOD only could represent information about total organic content. Fluorescence spectrum can display organic composition and it is unique for each sample, so it is referred as "fluorescence fingerprint". In the present study transformation of excitation-emission matrix of municipal wastewater with sewage as major components after aerobic treatment was investigated and then the zones of biodegradable and non-biodegradable organic matters were figured out: the fluorescence at excitation wavelength/emission wavelength of about 280/340 nm and 225/240 nm derived from biodegradable organics and those of the zone of excitation wavelength above 300 nm and the zone of excitation wavelength below 300 nm and emission wavelength above 400 nm were mainly related with non-biodegradable organics. The above-mentioned results indicated that fluorescence fingerprint could be used to evaluate the performance and instruct design and operation of aerobic systems.

Abstract:This study focused on the characterization of fluorescent-dissolved organic matter and identification of specific fluorophores in textile effluents. Samples from different textile wastewater treatment plants were characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography and size exclusion chromatography as well as fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectra. Despite the highly heterogeneous textile effluents, the fluorescent components and their physicochemical properties were found relatively invariable, which is beneficial for the combination of biological and physicochemical treatment processes. The humic-like substance with triple-excitation peaks (excitation (Ex) 250, 310, 365/emission (Em) 460 nm) presented as the specific fluorescence indicator in textile effluents. It was also the major contributor to UV absorbance at 254 nm and resulted in the brown color of biologically treated textile effluents. By spectral comparison, the specific fluorophore in textile effluents could be attributed to the intermediate structure of azo dyes 1-amino-2-naphthol, which was transferred into the special humic-like substances during biological treatment.
