Abstract:The aggregation behaviors and phase separation of binary nanoparticles immersed in semiflexible polymer brushes are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. The conformations of the binary nanoparticle-brush mixtures are very sensitive to the size ratio q = sigma(l)/sigma(s) where sigma(l) and sigma(s) are the diameters for large and small nanoparticles, respectively, and the attractive interactions epsilon(M) between the nanoparticles and polymer brushes. The phase separation of the binary nanoparticles is observed at a relatively strong attractive interaction under the effects of inter-nanoparticle depletion attractions provided by polymer brushes. Furthermore, the crystallization of small nanoparticles occurs at a strong interaction and a hexagonal close-packed-like (hcp-like) ordered structure is formed. The present results may promise a new approach for controlling the self-assembling behavior of nanoparticles and constructing a better macroscopic performance of the material.

Abstract:Self-assembly is the process to form ordered compound structures. Theories and experiments involving nanosized Janus particles have proved that the assembled cluster structures are related to the unit number. Micrometer-sized amphiphilic Janus particles could also act as surfactants to stabilize droplets and aggregate to form clusters. When the scale order increases to the millimeter size, particles are usually connected under shape-match mechanism, which means that the assembled structure is related to the particular particle morphology rather than the particle number. Similar to millimeter-sized particles, sub-millimeter-sized particles are larger and heavier such that their gravity cannot be ignored, whereas their Brownian motion could be neglected. To investigate the self-assembly behavior of sub-millimeter-sized Janus particles, we synthesize smart amphiphilic Janus microparticles directly from water-oil Janus droplets in one step by using a double-core capillary device. We find that the amphiphilic Janus particles could also be distributed directionally between the sides of the water-oil interface. When in oil solutions with several water droplets, the particles self-assemble into micelle-like structures to cover the water droplets with the hydrophilic phase inside. After evaporation, structures with a hydrophilic concave and a hydrophobic convex are formed. This paper demonstrates that sub-millimeter-sized amphiphilic Janus particles exhibit similar ability to nano-sized Janus particles to aggregate into clusters with ordered structures.
Efficient Fabrication of Janus Particles with Active Groups and Application in Emulsion Stabilization and Interfacial Catalysis

Abstract:Janus particles have garnered significant attention due to their unique asymmetric structure. Researchers are dedicated to developing an industrial-scale production method for Janus particles. Herein, an oil-in-water emulsion was prepared through one-step mixing of functional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and the fluorocarbon monomer (perfluorodecyl)ethyl acrylate (FC), which were simultaneously transformed into Janus particles (PFC–PGMA–NH2) with an epoxy group by ultraviolet (UV)-induced free radical polymerization. The incorporation of a composite surfactant solution, comprising sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and a fluorocarbon surfactant (Zonyl FS-300), not only bolsters the stability of the emulsion but also confers control over droplet morphology. By manipulating the surface tension at the interface by varying the ratio of the surfactant to the monomer, fast and precise tuning of the internal droplet geometry was achieved from one-phase to two-phase PFC-in-PGMA/PGMA-in-PFC/Janus emulsions. The incorporation of active epoxy groups into the PFC–PGMA particles facilitates the selectively postfunctionalization reactions to produce amphiphilic PFC–PGMA–NH2 Janus particles. At the oil/water emulsion interface, the conversion rate of the gold-loaded PFC–PGMA–NH2@Au Janus catalyst reached 84.13% after 2 h, exhibiting a remarkable enhancement of 12.7 times compared to that achieved through oil–water two-phase interface catalysis under identical reaction conditions. As solid amphiphilic surfactants, Janus particles with precisely adjustable hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties exhibit exceptional capabilities in stabilizing emulsions. Therefore, they play a crucial role in enhancing catalytic efficiency and regulating active sites during two-phase catalysis. They are expected to be used in protein immobilization, interfacial biocatalysis, and other fields.

Abstract:Amphiphilic Janus particles are mixed with homogeneous binder particles with strong adhesion to create robust hydrophobic coatings through a unique self-stratification process. Intriguingly, Janus particles form a complete and densely packed monolayer with their hydrophobic sides orienting towards air, which effectively increases the water contact angle to similar to 130 degrees, while the hydrophilic sides sustain strong adhesion with the coating layer. The coating maintains its high contact angle even after solvent rinsing, whereas conventional coating completely breaks down. Experimental data and preliminary theoretical modeling suggest that the stratification are partially due to the strong adsorption of Janus particles at the water-air interface, although the detailed mechanisms require more thorough investigation. Remarkably, simply adding Janus particles renders a hydrophilic commercial primer coating surface hydrophobic and drastically reduces the surface tackiness. This cost-effective and commercially scalable method offers a convenient way to fabricate advanced structures at the interface and can be broadly applicable to many other colloidal systems.

Abstract:We have proposed a simple method to synthesize asymmetric Janus polymer particles at an emulsion interface. Morphological evolution of the particles with polymerization and their dependence on some key variables reveal that both crosslinking degree of the particles and interfacial tension difference play key roles in achieving the asymmetric shapes. By selective growth of functional materials onto the desired sides, composition and microstructure of the Janus particles can be controlled. The representative PS/PAM Janus particles are amphiphilic and can be used as solid surfactants to stabilize emulsions, which preferentially orientate at the interface.

Abstract:Using shape-persistent Janus particles to construct poly(Janus particle)s and studying their self-assembly behaviors are of great interest, but remain largely unexplored. In this work, we reported a type of amphiphiles constructed by the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of nonspherical molecular Janus particles (APOSS-BPOSS), called poly(Janus particle)s (poly(APOSS-BPOSS)n, n = 12, 17, 22, and 35, and Mn = 35-100 kg/mol). Unlike traditional bottlebrush polymers consisting of flexible side chains, these poly(Janus particles) consist of rigid hydrophilic and hydrophobic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cages as side chains. Interestingly, instead of maintaining an expected extended chain conformation, they could also collapse and then self-assemble to form unconventional unimolecular or oligomeric spherical micelles in solutions with a feature size smaller than 7 nm. More importantly, unlike traditional amphiphilic polymer brushes that could form unimolecular micelles at a relatively high degree of polymerization by self-assembly, these poly(Janus particles)s could accomplish self-assembly at a quite low degree of polymerization because of their unique chemical structure and molecular topology. The formation of unimolecular and oligomeric micelles was also further confirmed by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. This study of introducing the POSS-based poly(Janus particle)s as a class of shape amphiphiles will provide a model system for generating unimolecular and oligomeric micellar nanostructures through solution self-assembly.

Abstract:Janus two‐dimensional (2D) polymeric materials present asymmetric dual surfaces that enable a variety of applications of biosensors, catalysts, drug delivery, etc. This work reports the evaporation‐induced interfacial self‐assembly of amphiphilic block copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(N‐(2‐phenylethyl) glycine) (PEG‐b‐PNPE) at the air–water interface. The PEG‐b‐PNPE was initially assembled into a monolayer with a uniform thickness of ~2.5 ± 0.1 nm, which was mechanically compressed into a bilayer structure by Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technology as surface pressure is exceeding the critical collapse pressure. Both monolayer and bilayer nanostructure span over hundreds of microns in both dimensions. The surface contact angle of the sample was measured by dynamic/static optical contact angle/interface tensiometer, which showed asymmetric wettability on the air side and the water side. The evolution from a monolayer to a bilayer was further tracked by an atomic force microscope. By the evaporation‐induced interfacial self‐assembly at the air–water interface, we also prepared macroscopic Janus films with a diameter of ~3.5 mm. The obtained micro/macro‐scale 2D materials have potential applications in nanoscience and biomedicine.

Abstract:Janus particles with different compositions and properties segmented to different regions on the surface of one objector provide more opportunities for interfacial engineering. As a novel interfacial active material, Janus particles integrate the amphiphilic properties of molecular surfactants and the Pickering effect of homogeneous particles. In this research, the outstanding properties of Janus particles on various interfaces are examined from both theoretical and practical perspectives, and the advantages of Janus particles over molecular surfactants and homogeneous particle surfactants are analyzed. We believe that Janus particles are ideal tools for interface regulation and functionalization in the future.

Preparation of amphiphilic Janus SiO2 particles and its application on polyacrylate emulsion

Abstract:Amphiphilic Janus SiO2 particles were prepared at the liquid-liquid interface by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure of the particles was characterized by contact angle, fluorescent labeling and DLS. The emulsifying ability of the particle was characterized by fluorescent labeling and emulsifying experiment. The results shown that amphiphilic Janus SiO2 particles had good emulsifying ability and the critical micelle concentration was 0.079 mg/mL. The amphiphilic Janus SiO2 particles were used as surfactants to stabilize acrylate monomers, and polyacrylate emulsion was obtained through free radical polymerization. The solid content, conversion rate, infrared spectrum and DLS were characterized. The surface morphology of latex film was characterized by AFM and SEM. The properties of emulsion film were characterized by the video optical contact angle, water absorption and light transmission spectrophotometry. The results shown that the amphiphilic Janus SiO2 particles had good dispersibility and introduction of inorganic particles improved the light transmission, water resistance and mechanical properties of the polyacrylate emulsion membrane.

Abstract:This study reveals the unique role on Janus particles of the solid-solid interface at the boundary in determining particle interactions and assembly. In an aqueous ionic liquid (IL) solution, Janus spheres adopt intriguing orientations with their boundaries pinned on the glass substrate. It was further discovered that the orientation was affected by the particle amphiphilicity as well as the chemical structure and concentration of the IL. Further characterization suggests that the adsorption on the hydrophilic side is due to both an electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, while adsorption on the hydrophobic side is due to hydrophobic attraction. Through the concerted interplay of all these interactions, the amphiphilic boundary may attract an excessive amount of IL cations, which guide the unique orientations of the Janus spheres. The results highlight the importance of the Janus boundary that has not been recognized previously. Adsorption at the solid-solid interfaces may inspire new applications in areas such as separation and catalysis.

Abstract:Self-assembly is one of the most popular ways to produce nanoparticle (NP) films, but it is still limited by expensive instruments, time-consuming processes, and poor controllability. Here we present a thermally induced, tension-gradient-driven nanoparticle self-assembly method to realize high-efficiency, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and controllable fabrication of large-area NP films. The driving force of this self-assembly method comes from the tension gradient of the air-liquid interface and particle-liquid interface. Meniscus shape, immersion velocity, and temperature have significant effects on self-assembly. The as-prepared ultrathin NP films are closely packed, and the number of layers can be well controlled, exhibit excellent superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties, and can separate various oil-water mixtures with high efficiency. Moreover, the method is suitable for various 2D and 3D substrates, which may enable efficient and controllable fabrication of NP films.

Abstract:Two molecular Janus particles based on amphiphilic [60]fullerene (C60 ) derivatives were designed and synthesized by using the regioselective Bingel-Hirsh reaction and the click reaction. These particles contain carboxylic acid functional groups, a hydrophilic fullerene (AC60 ), and a hydrophobic C60 in different ratios and have distinct molecular architectures: 1:1 (AC60 -C60 ) and 1:2 (AC60 -2C60 ). These molecular Janus particles can self-assemble in solution to form aggregates with various types of micellar morphology. Whereas vesicular morphology was observed for both AC60 -C60 and AC60 -2C60 in tetrahydrofuran, in a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)/water, spherical micelles and cylindrical micelles were observed for AC60 -C60 and AC60 -2C60 , respectively. A mechanism of formation was tentatively proposed based on the effects of molecular architecture and solvent polarity on self-assembly.

Abstract:Janus colloidal particles with hierarchical structures are generated by phase separation of diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) and homopolymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) binary blends in confined geometry. The dependence of their morphology on the copolymer composition, solvent selectivity, particle size, and polymer/aqueous solution interfacial property was investigated. By varying the particle/aqueous solution interfacial property alternately, the Janus particles exhibited a reversible morphological transformation under solvent-adsorption annealing process. In addition, by introducing 3-n-pentadecyphenol (PDP) which can hydrogen bond with P4VP to form supramolecules, the structure of the Janus particles can be well tuned. Furthermore, due to the complexation of pyridine unit with Au precursor, composite Janus particles with Au nanoparticles selectively incorporated in P4VP microdomains can be easily manipulated.
Interfacial Polymerization on Dynamic Complex Colloids: Creating Stabilized Janus Droplets

Abstract:Complex emulsions, including Janus droplets, are becoming increasingly important in pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics, the fabrication of microcapsules for drug delivery, chemical sensing, E-paper display technologies, and optics. Because fluid Janus droplets are often sensitive to external perturbation, such as unexpected changes in the concentration of the surfactants or surface-active biomolecules in the environment, stabilizing their morphology is critical for many real-world applications. To endow Janus droplets with resistance to external chemical perturbations, we demonstrate a general and robust method of creating polymeric hemispherical shells via interfacial free-radical polymerization on the Janus droplets. The polymeric hemispherical shells were characterized by optical and fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. By comparing phase diagrams of a regular Janus droplet and a Janus droplet with the hemispherical shell, we show that the formation of the hemispherical shell nearly doubles the range of the Janus morphology and maintains the Janus morphology upon a certain degree of external perturbation (e.g., adding hydrocarbon-water or fluorocarbon-water surfactants). We attribute the increased stability of the Janus droplets to (1) the surfactant nature of polymeric shell formed and (2) increase in interfacial tension between hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon due to polymer shell formation. This finding opens the door of utilizing these stabilized Janus droplets in a demanding environment.
Janus Nanosheets by Emulsion Interfacial Crosslinking of Reactive Surfactants

Abstract:Polymeric Janus nanosheets are synthesized by crosslinking the self-assembled monolayer formed by a reactive polymer surfactant at an oil/water interface. At low temperature, while the hydrophobic segments are frozen by the internal phase of solid paraffin, the reactive hydrophilic carboxylic acid groups exposed to the external aqueous phase can be selectively crosslinked to form an intact nanomembrane. The Janus nanosheets can be created after breaking the nanomembrane into pieces under ultrasonication during dissolution of the paraffin phase. Many approaches can be used to crosslink the nanomembrane at the interface, for example multiple amines and multivalent cationic ions. The polymeric Janus nanosheets can be easily functionalized to derive a series of composite nanosheets. The composite Janus nanosheets can serve as new solid surfactants which are responsive to pH or magnetic field.

Abstract:We report a method to prepare polymer/inorganic Janus particles by transferring self-assembled membranes of copolymers such as PS- b-PAA at an emulsion interface when the amine-capped particles such as paramagnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 core/shell particles are preferentially adsorbed by specific interactions. While the particles are protected, the exposed side can be further modified to conjugate aldehyde-capped polyethylene oxide (PEO). Both connections become robust by covalent bonds. The hydrophilic PEO and hydrophobic PS chains are distinctly compartmentalized onto the opposite sides of the Fe3O4@SiO2 particles. As a magnetic responsive solid surfactant, the stabilized emulsions can be driven with a magnet for directional movement and coalescence with increasing magnetic strength. This method can be extended to other Janus particles with tunable organic materials and solid particles.

Abstract:Janus is named after the Roman god who is depicted to have two opposite faces looking at the past and the future. In 1991, de Gennes introduced the Janus particles in his Nobel lecture. Janus materials have triggered extensive research interests in academia and industry. Janus composites possess two different chemical regions and functions that are distinctly compartmentalized onto the same object. While the organic polymer components provide tunable wettability and responsive performances, the inorganic (or metallic) components offer desired functionalities such as magnetic manipulation and light thermal effect. We have developed methods to precisely tune shape, size, microstructure and chemistry of Janus composites and therefore their performance. In analogy to molecular surfactants or copolymers, the amphiphilic Janus composites can stabilize interfaces more effectively. Similarly, the Janus composites can serve as emulsifiers in emulsion polymerization and as compatibilizers for polymer alloys. Moreover, the interfaces stabilized with the Janus composites can be easily manipulated by using external stimuli, and functionalized by delivering desired species thereby. By grafting responsive polymer chains, the emulsions can be de-stabilized by simple changing pH, temperature, light irradiation or exchanging of ions. When Janus composites contain paramagnetic species, the emulsion droplets can be withdrawn with a magnet. The droplets are further coalesced, leading to de-emulsification under a stronger magnetic field. This performance is important to remedy polluted water or soil with organic species in the presence of surfactants. By conjugation of heterogeneous catalysts onto the Janus composites, the catalytic efficiency of the catalysts is greatly enhanced. Functional species such as Fe3O4 or Au nanoparticles (NPs) can be delivered toward an oil/water interface when these NPs are grafted with hydrophobic and thermally responsive chains such as PNIPAM at the opposite sides. The de-emulsification can be easily achieved under NIR irradiation even when the continuous phase temperature is below the LCST of PNIPAM (similar to 32 degrees C). The performance is enhanced from an interactive interplay between the hyperthermia effect of nanoparticles and a thermal energy transfer to fast locally heat PNIPAM. This performance is promising in heterogeneous catalysis and recycling of expensive catalysts. Wettability of Janus composites can be significantly magnified by nanoscale roughness. Robust superhydrophobic coatings are easily fabricated by forming a self-assembled monolayer of coarsening Janus microparticles and catalytic crosslinking the intermediate epoxy resin adhesive. In this Review, recent progress in manipulation of interfaces by Janus composites is summarized, including in emulsions and polymer alloys, interfacial heterogeneous catalysis, functional coatings, cell diagnosis and therapy.
Amphiphilic Bowl-Shaped Janus Particles Prepared via Thiol–Ene Click Reaction for Effective Oil–Water Separation

Abstract:Janus particles for oil–water separation have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Herein, we prepared a bowl-shaped Janus particle that could rapidly separate oil and water through a thiol–ene click reaction and selective etching. Firstly, snowman-like composite microspheres based on silica and mercaptopropyl polysilsesquioxane (SiO2@MPSQ) were prepared by a hydrolytic condensation reaction and phase separation, and the effects of the rotational speed and molar ratios on their microscopic morphologies were investigated. Subsequently, bowl-shaped Janus particles with convex hydrophilic and concave oleophilic surfaces were prepared via a thiol–ene click reaction followed by HF etching. Our amphiphilic bowl-shaped Janus particles could remarkably separate micro-sized oil droplets from an n-heptane–water emulsion with a separation efficiency of >98% within 300 s. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, we proposed the underlying mechanism for the coalescence of oil droplets upon the addition of the amphiphilic bowl-shaped Janus particles.
