Abstract:Achieving efficient and reasonable renewable energy utilization is crucial for sustainable socio-economy development. Herein, an ingenious glucose/O2 bio-photoelectrochemical system (BPECS) is developed to enhance glucose metabolism process for high-efficiency biofuels utilization. Capturing the intermittent nature of sunlight, glucose metabolism is divided into two-step reasonably. Under dark condition, bio-metabolism catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOD), is conducted firstly to enrich gluconic acid and H2O2. Benefiting from specific electrocatalytic selectivity of BiVO4 photoanode and hemin cathode towards gluconic acid oxidation and H2O2 reduction, respectively, electro-matabolism occurs subsequently under light illumination. Moreover, profiting from prominently catalytic stability, a nanozyme-enhanced BPECS is constructed for the first time by integrating GOD-like Au nanoparticles, and a maximum power density of 139.17 μW cm−2 with open-circuit voltage of 0.62 V, is obtained. Such a BPECS provides a guiding significance for exploration of renewable energy sources and opens up a new path to expand nanozymes in extensive research fields.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation of glucose on bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) electrode for sensor application and solar-to-electricity production was investigated in this work. The BiVO4-based PEC sensor displays a sensitivity of 17.38 mu A cm-2 mM-1 for glucose sensing in the concentration range of 5-35 mM. Furthermore, electricity can be collected by extracting solar energy and bioenergy in a certain photo fuel cell (PFC) device via anodic reaction of photo oxidizing glucose and cathodic reaction of oxygen reduction. This study offers a promising strategy for glucose sensing and provides a cost-effective way for solar-to-electricity generation.

Abstract:The power output and stability of enzyme-based biofuel cells (BFCs) is greatly dependent on the properties of both the biocathode and bioanode, which may be adapted for portable power production. In this paper, a novel highly uniform three-dimensional (3D) macroporous gold (MP-Au) film was prepared by heating the gold "supraspheres", which were synthesized by a bottom-up protein templating approach, and followed by modification of laccase on the MP-Au film by covalent immobilization. The as-prepared laccase/MP-Au biocathode exihibited an onset potential of 0.62 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE, or 0.86 V vs NHE, normal hydrogen electrode) toward O2 reduction and a high catalytic current of 0.61 mAcm(-2). On the other hand, mutated glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) surface displayed bacteria (GDH-bacteria) were used to improve the stability of the glucose oxidation at the bioanode. The as-assembled membraneless glucose/O2 fuel cell showed a high power output of 55.8 ± 2.0 μW cm(-2) and open circuit potential of 0.80 V, contributing to the improved electrocatalysis toward O2 reduction at the laccase/MP-Au biocathode. Moreover, the BFC retained 84% of its maximal power density even after continuous operation for 55 h because of the high stability of the bacterial surface displayed GDH mutant toward glucose oxidation. Our findings may be promising for the development of more efficient glucose BFC for portable battery or self-powered device applications.

Abstract:We report the development of a multifunctional, solar-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC)-pseudocapacitive-sensing material system for simultaneous solar energy conversion, electrochemical energy storage, and chemical detection. The TiO2 nanowire/NiO nanoflakes and the Si nanowire/Pt nanoparticle composites are used as photoanodes and photocathodes, respectively. A stable open-circuit voltage of ∼0.45 V and a high pseudocapacitance of up to ∼455 F g(-1) are obtained, which also exhibit a repeating charging-discharging capability. The PEC-pseudocapacitive device is fully solar powered, without the need of any external power supply. Moreover, this TiO2 nanowire/NiO nanoflake composite photoanode exhibits excellent glucose sensitivity and selectivity. Under the sun light illumination, the PEC photocurrent shows a sensitive increase upon different glucose additions. Meanwhile in the dark, the open-circuit voltage of the charged pseudocapacitor also exhibits a corresponding signal over glucose analyte, thus serving as a full solar-powered energy conversion-storage-utilization system.
The Dual-Function of Hematite-Based Photoelectrochemical Sensor for Solar-to-electricity Conversion and Self-Powered Glucose Detection

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) glucose sensing has been developed as a novel promising electrochemical approach for advanced analysis due to the advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity as well as good stability. Here, we present a Fe2O3 nanorod (Fe2O3NR)-based PEC sensor, which shows excellent performance in glucose detection for the concentrations in the range of 0.2-2.0 mM with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.997 and a sensitivity of 100.46 mu A cm(-2) mM(-1). Furthermore, the glucose determination can be achieved without inputting external electrical power via a photo fuel cell (PFC) which is fabricated by the Fe2O3NR photoanode and platinum cathode. The generated maximum power density (P-max) shows a linear sensitivity of 3.53 mu W cm(-2) mM(-1) to the variation of glucose concentrations from 0.5 to 2.5 mM with correlation coefficient of 0.990. Therefore, the Fe2O3NR-based PEC sensor not only realizes the electricity generation from renewable solar energy and bioenergy but also accomplishes the detection of glucose by self-power.
Pseudocapacitance behavior enables efficient and stable electrochemical energy conversion and storage in glucose/air enzymatic biofuel cells

Abstract:Constructing an integrated system with high-efficiency and stable energy conversion and storage (ECS) is of great significance but remains challenges. Herein, we report a biodevice consisting of a bioanode of tetrathiafulvalene/glucose oxidase (TTF/GOx) immobilized on asphalt-derived porous carbon (APC) for catalyzing glucose oxidation and a biocathode of 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate)/bilirubin oxidase (ABTS/BOD) immobilized on APC for catalyzing oxygen reduction , to achieve ECS with high-efficiency and excellent stability. The redox mediators , TTF and ABTS, used at the bioanode and biocathode, respectively, simultaneously mediate electron transfer to release electric current on discharging and serve as pseudocapacitors to achieve charge storage at open-circuit conditions, enabling high power density and self-charge capability. The biodevice of the above configuration delivers a peak power output of 5.01 mW cm −2 in the pulse discharge mode with cell voltage remaining 93.7 % of its initial value after 100 pulse discharge/self-charge cycles. This work provides a highly efficient solution to address the low power density and poor stability of the conventional enzymatic biofuel cells, showing great implications for small, implantable and wearable electronics.

High-performance self-powered photoelectrochemical bioassay system with a triphase oxidase enzymatic interface

Abstract:In the field of biomolecule detection, self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioassay devices have gained considerable interest with no demand for an external voltage but rather solar energy consumption. In this study, we present a self-powered PEC bioassay system that consists of a nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanode coupled to a biophotocathode with a solidliquidair triphase oxidase enzymatic interface. The triphase biophotocathode was assembled by immobilizing oxidase on superhydrophobic Cu 2 2 nanowire arrays. A high and steady interfacial oxygen concentration can be ensured by the triphase biophotocathode with much increased gas mass transport capability, which consequently enhance the kinetics of the oxidase enzymatic reaction as well as the sensing performance of self-powered PEC bioassay system. For the diphase biophotocathode based system, the low solubility and slow diffusion rate of oxygen restrict the kinetics of the oxidase catalytic reaction. As a result, the proposed triphase self-powered PEC bioassay platform exhibits excellent performance with a linear range up to 20 mM for glucose (a model analyst) detection, which is 20 times higher than that of the diphase one. Furthermore, an exceptional anti-interface is obtained by the cathodic bioanalysis approach in the self-powered PEC bioassay system.

Abstract:Selective conversion of renewable biomass to value-added chemicals/fuels via environment-friendly photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology has enormous development potential for solving the increasingly serious problems on energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, PEC biomass conversion is a complex process involving photogenerated carrier separation, multiple-electron/proton transfer and different bonds evolution. The main challenge at present is how to improve the catalytic activity of semiconductor photoelectrodes and the selectivity of target products while co-producing high-value by-products ( e.g. , H 2 ). In this review, we elaborate the fundamental principles of PEC cell, as well as the promotive strategies for bandgap and structure regulation of photoelectrodes such as doping, defect engineering, facet engineering, cocatalyst loading and heterojunction formation. On this basis, we discuss the PEC mechanism of biomass-derived compounds upgrading, including aliphatic alcohols (methanol, ethanol, glycerol), aromatic alcohols (benzyl alcohol), aldehydes (glyoxal, glucose), furans (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural) and hydrocarbons (methane, cyclohexane, benzene). Moreover, we describe the introduction of redox couples (nitroxyl radicals, polyoxometalate, chloride, bromide) and redox enzymes acting as proton/charge transfer mediator in PEC cell to boost biomass conversion. Following that, we systematically summarize the recent progress in the development of dual-function PEC cells with anodic biomass oxidation and cathodic HER/ORR/CO 2 RR/NiRR for enhanced hydrogen production, electricity generation and value-added chemicals/fuels preparation. Finally, we present the main challenges and perspectives for future exploration, innovation, and ultimately commercialization of PEC biomass conversion.

Abstract:Herein, an OV:BiVO4‐triethanolamine photoelectrochemical fuel cell is constructed for simultaneous pollutant degradation and H2 production, exhibiting a super‐high current density of 20.40 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode under simulated solar irradiation. Furthermore, integrating a Pt/C coated Si photocathode into this PEC fuel cell can achieve bias‐free and efficient H2 production. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) fuel cells that enable organic pollutants degradation while generating H2 are regarded as a viable approach in addressing global energy and environmental issues. Herein, an efficient PEC fuel cell is constructed using oxygen vacancy‐rich BiVO4 (OV:BiVO4) as the photoanode and triethanolamine (TEOA) pollutant as the fuel. Under AM 1.5 G, this OV:BiVO4–TEOA PEC fuel cell shows an ultra‐high photo‐driven current density of 20.40 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which is superior to most reported PEC fuel cells. The Faradic efficiency of H2 production is about 97.26%, and no CO2 is released in the anode chamber due to the strong CO2 adsorption by excess TEOA. Further integration of a Pt/C cocatalyst coated Si photocathode in the OV:BiVO4–TEOA PEC fuel cell can achieve bias‐free H2 production with a current density of 10.17 mA cm−2. The experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal the importance of the robust complexation between the OV:BiVO4 photoanode and TEOA, which ensures thorough conversion of chemical energy in TEOA and high activity of the PEC fuel cell. This work will guide the design of efficient PEC fuel cells for simultaneous pollutant treatment and H2 production.

Abstract:A unique photoelectrochemical fuel cell consisting of dual photoelectrodes is developed by utilizing light, ascorbic acid, and oxygen to produce electric power. Specifically, the integration of bifunctional single‐atom iron cocatalysts significantly facilitates anodic ascorbic acid oxidation reaction and cathodic oxygen reduction reaction, effectively improving interfacial reaction kinetics and photoelectric conversion efficiency. Semiconductor‐based photoelectrochemical (PEC) fuel cells offer a feasible solution for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy production by converting solar and chemical energy into electrical energy. However, the low PEC activities of PEC fuel cells have hindered their practical application due to rapid electron‐hole recombination and slow interfacial reaction kinetics. To address this issue, a unique PEC fuel cell composed of dual photoelectrodes utilizing low‐cost biomass, ascorbic acid, as an organic fuel is reported. Significantly, the integration of bifunctional iron single‐atom catalysts (Fe SACs) and photoactive materials has effectively constructed a bridge for charge carrier transfer, boosting interfacial reaction kinetics and photoelectric conversion efficiency. Notably, the optimal dual‐photoelectrode PEC fuel cell decorated with Fe SACs exhibits superior performance, delivering a maximum power density of 82.82 μW cm−2. Taking advantage of the peroxidase‐like activity of Fe SACs, the resultant self‐powered PEC fuel cells are explored for sensitively detecting actual uric acid samples. This study provides a promising avenue to boost the energy conversion efficiency of PEC fuel cells for sensitive self‐powered biosensing.

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxidation mediated by TiO2 is a promising oxidation process for degradation of organic pollutants, but suffers from the decreased photocatalytic efficiency attributed to the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Thus, a cost-effective supply of external electrons is an effective way to elevate the photocatalytic efficiency. Here we report a novel bioelectrochemical system to effectively reduce p-nitrophenol as a model organic pollutant with utilization of the energy derived from a microbial fuel cell. In such a system, there is a synergetic effect between the electrochemical and photocatalytic oxidation processes. Kinetic analysis shows that the system exhibits a more rapid p-nitrophenol degradation at a rate two times the sum of rates by the individual photocatalytic and electrochemical methods. The system performance is influenced by both external resistor and electrolyte concentration. Either a lower external resistor or a lower electrolyte concentration results in a higher p-nitrophenol degradation rate. This system has a potential for the effective degradation of refractory organic pollutants and provides a new way for utilization of the energy generated from conversion of organic wastes by microbial fuel cells.

Abstract:The key factors that restrain the decomposition activity of photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) are poor redox ability and low charge separation rate. In this work, the dual Z-scheme BiVO4/NH2-MIL-125(Ti)/POF (BiVO4/NM125(Ti)/POF) heterojunctions were successfully established for visible-light driven PEC degradation of phenol. As expected, the optimum BiVO4/NM125(Ti)/POF photoanode exhibited outstanding PEC performance with near-total degradation of phenol within 2 h of illumination. The evaluated activity was assigned to high charge transfer rate and dual Z-scheme heterostructures with double electron transport channels. The fabrication of dual Z-scheme heterojunctions improved a more efficient separation of photo-induced charge carriers while holding a higher redox ability to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as O2 •− and •OH to decompose organic pollutants. In addition, excellent chemical stability and recyclability were also achieved after five times cycles, and the degradation pathway of phenol was also put forward. Finally, the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) was applied to forecast phenol and its degradation products toxicity. This research gives novel insights into establishing highly effective photoanode with promising applications for organic contaminants degradation, and offers in-depth understanding of charge separation and migration in PEC process.

S-MPEC consists of technology of bioelectrochemical cells and photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) for enhancing the degradation of pollutants from wastewater treatment under irradiation. The bare Fe2O3 photoelectrode exhibits a photocurrent of 1.093 A/m2 at 0.8V under visible light, whereas the Fe2O3-MR-1 biophotoelectrode reveals a higher photocurrent of 1.605A/m2. With visible light exposure at an intensity of less than 100mW/cm2, the power densities of the Fe2O3 photoelectrode system with and without coating the MR-1 bacteria are 1.284 W/m2 and 0.872 W/m2, respectively. Besides, based on the study of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics, the reduction and oxidation reactions of Fe2O3-MR-1 exhibits more efficient diffusion coefficients with enhanced rate constants. These findings demonstrate a significant impact on degradation performance induced by photoexcited charge carriers in the complicated hybrid electricigen hybrid system, which is critical for the development of the S-MPEC for waste degradation.

Boosting Pollutant Degradation with Simultaneous H2O2 Production from its Electron Delocalization and Excitation Co-triggered by Microelectric field and Visible-light

Abstract:Novel electron delocalization and excitation of pollutants triggered by microelectric field (MEF) on g-C3N4 surface and visible-light was firstly introduced in dual-photocatalytic system, which greatly boosting the pollutant degradation with simultaneous H2O2 production of dual-photocatalysis. MEF was established on the surface of g-C3N4 by simply replacing its connecting N-sites (N-C3) with benzene-ring, which would drag the electrons of benzene-ring to the heptazine of g-C3N4 and store them here to establish an electron impurity level (EIL), which was excited by visible-light to reduce O2 to H2O2. Then, MEF further dragged the electrons of bisphenol A (BPA) and phenolic intermediates spontaneously absorbed on benzene-ring to fill up the electron deficiency of EIL to maintain its continuous excitation, which strengthened the light absorption of g-C3N4 without generating hole and enriching the electron number for H2O2 production. Meanwhile, BPA and its degraded phenolic intermediates undergo self-cracking and intrinsic photocatalytic degradation on the HOMO of RSN (g-C3N4 modified with MEF), which prevented them from capturing electrons on reduction sites. Consequently, RSN10 with optimal MEF showed a remarkable BPA degradation percentage of 100% with simultaneous H2O2 production of 65.82 μmol/L under 40 min visible-light irradiation. This work provides a new strategy for directing conversion of pollutants energy to chemical energy and breaking the intrinsic photocatalysis contradiction, which has great sustainability implications for pollutants treatment and recovery.

Abstract:As an advanced oxidation technology, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) has been widely explored to degrade refractory contaminants in the environment. Meanwhile, enzymatic biodegradation provides an effective approach to removal of organic pollutants under mild conditions. Herein, we developed a biophotoelectrocatalytic system to remove bisphenol A (BPA) based on the combination of PEC and enzymatic biodegradation. We utilized carbon fiber cloth (CFC) as substrate to construct a dual-photoelectrode biophotoelectrocatalytic system based on three dimensional (3D) nanostructured TiO2 photoanode with oxygen vacancy defects (Ov-TiO2/CFC) and enzyme-coupled CuO/g-C3N4/CFC photocathode. The excellent PEC performance of Ov-TiO2/CFC photoanode significantly promoted the formation of reactive radicals for the degradation reaction, ascribed to efficient separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. The proposed system displayed good synergistic effect between PEC and enzymatic catalysis for BPA removal, with more than 99% degradation efficiency after 90-min treatment. This work demonstrates CFC as a useful substrate material for constructing highly efficient biophotoelectrocatalytic degradation system for organic pollutant removal.

Abstract:Energy recovery from wastewater treatment is attracting tremendous research interests since the environmental and energy issues can be simultaneously addressed. Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) provides a sustainable way for water purification and electricity generation, but its performance has been restricted by the poor mass and charge transfer. Herein, we demonstrated an integrated PFC platform by mimicking the metabolic processes in human body. Inspired by the purification of metabolites in the microstructure of liver lobules, flow-through TiO2 photoanode with numerous microchannels was developed. Compared to traditional PFC with planar photoanode, the biomimetic microflow PFC exhibited 3 to 5-fold enhancements in the removal efficiencies of various organic pollutants, including perfluorooctanoic acid, 4-chlorophenol, bisphenol A, methylene blue, and amoxicillin. To mimic the breathing process in alveoli, an ultrathin air cathode was fabricated by sputtering Pt (loading as small as 0.01 mg cm−2) on nanoporous polyethylene film, contributing to fast oxygen diffusion and abundant gas-liquid-solid three-phase reactive sites. The construction of this dual-biomimetic PFC system resulted in an open circuit voltage of 0.92 V and a record-high power output of 500 μW cm−2 under simulated solar light. The series connection of modularized reactors allowed for the successive purification of wastewater by self-generated electricity. Thus, this work opens up new opportunities of biomimetic photocatalytic system for addressing the water-energy nexus.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) with integrated photoactive components have been shown to be a promising strategy for enhancing the performance for bioenergy generation and pollutant removal. This study revealed an efficient photo-BES with an enhanced pollutant degradation rate by utilizing self-produced biomolecules as photosensitizers in situ. Results showed that the BES could increase the coulombic efficiency from 60.8% to 73.0% and the degradation rate of bisphenol A (BPA) from 0.030 to 0.189 h−1 when the suspension in the reactor was illuminated with simulated sunlight in the absence of any external photosensitizers. We identified that the regular BES released many organic substances into the reactor during operation. These substances, including dissolved biomolecules and solid cell residues, were photoactive for producing hydroxyl radicals during light illumination. Quenching experiments verified that the •OH generated from the self-produced biophotosensitizers contributed to the enhanced degradation of BPA. Additionally, the phototransformation of biophotosensitizers was also observed in photo-BES. The quantity of tyrosine protein-like components decreased, but that of the humic components remained relatively stable. Our findings imply that BESs with integrated self-produced biophotosensitizers may be promising for constructing advanced electrochemical and biological systems for synchronous bioelectricity production and degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatments.

Abstract:The photocatalytic (PC) degradation process of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been consistently restricted by the rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. To solve this problem, in this study, a novel photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) coupled system was constructed by integrating a single-chamber direct glucose fuel cell (SDGFC), which is capable of self-generating electricity, into the conventional PC system. The coupling system can inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes by continuously generating a current without an applied power source. In addition, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were prepared using biomass gelatin. This was employed as a PC material for the catalytic layer of the air cathode in the above coupling system, and the efficient degradation of benzene series (BTEX) was made easy by regulating the content of the N element. Notably, the N-CQDs under the optimal regulation ratio showed excellent optical properties and degradation performance, achieving an impressive PEC degradation rate of over 80 % for BTEX within 180 min. High-performance N-CQDs complement the novel PEC coupling system of self-generating electricity and provide robust support for BTEX degradation.

Abstract:New typed photovoltaic devices, represented by water/oxygen cycle based photo fuel cells (PFCs) as a promising strategy to resolve the fossil energy crisis, have attracted extensive attention for the ideal photo energy conversion and utilization efficiency, spontaneous operation, and miniaturized devices. However, they still have limitations such as low oxygen reduction efficiency and poor stability caused by the complex structure of the cathode. In this work, a synergetic and fast 2-electron water/oxygen cycle reaction based dual-photoelectrode fuel cell (DPFC) is constructed with molecularly imprinted (MI)-CdS/ZnO nanorods (NRs) as photoanode and p-type organic semiconductor polythiophene (pTTh) as photocathode for the first time. The larger self-bias and simple structure endow the device higher open circuit potential ( E OCV = 1.07 ± 0.08 V) and ideal output power density ( P max = 60.5 ± 2.1 μW·cm −2 ). Attributed to the synergistic reaction effects, the 2-electron water/oxygen cycle is realized by the photocathode-generated H 2 O 2 to serve as shuttle molecule, with outstanding cyclic stability (96 %) in 64 h continuous irradiation. Moreover, a portable self-powered sensor for the typical environmental pollutant atrazine is successfully developed based on this DPFC. A very wide concentration range (0.002 to 50 nM) and a super low detection limit (0.19 pM) is achived via a digital multimeter without the assistance of any signal amplifier. The mechanism, pathway, and active site of the selective reduction process are studied by the attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS). This work has proposed a cheap and regulatable new way to convert and utilize solar energy and provided theoretical guidance for achieving economic power generation and the sensing strategy of self-powered sensors.
