Abstract:Human populations are being exposed to a wide spectrum of radiation from soils as a result of the availability of radiation sources. Assessing the ecological and health effects of radionuclides in soils is crucial to support the optimal soil management practices but large-scale studies are limited. This study compiled data on radionuclides ( 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, 238 U, and 137 Cs) in soils located across the world (44 countries and 159 places) between 2008 and 2022 and applied radiological hazards indices and several multivariate statistical approaches. The average activity concentration (Bq/kg) of 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, 238 U, and 137 Cs were 408.56, 144.80, 508.78, 532.78, and 83.12, respectively, whereas 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, and 238 U exceeded the standard limits. The principal component analysis explained more than 91% of variation in soils. Based on the geoaccumulation index, 40 K posed moderately to heavy contamination whereas 238 U and 226 Ra posed moderate contamination in soils. Moreover, the mean values of radiological hazards evaluation such as radium equivalent activity (487.17 Bq/kg), external radiation hazard indices (1.32), internal hazard indices (2.15), absorbed dose rate (247.86 nGyh −1 ), annual effective dose rate (1.82 mSvy −1 ), activity utilization index (4.54) and excess lifetime cancer risk (63.84 × 10 –4 ) were higher than recommended limit suggesting significant radiological risks in study region soils. The findings indicated that the study area soils were contaminated by radionuclides and unsafe for hazards in terms of the health risks linked with studied radioactive contents. The study is valuable for mapping radioactivity across the globe to determine the level of radioactivity hazards.

Abstract:The presence of naturally occurring radioactivity in sand and other building materials results in indoor and outdoor exposure to the public. Sand is one of the main components in civil construction alongside cement, crushed stone and bricks. Thus, this research was carried out in twenty sand samples with the objective of investigating the hazard indices of natural radiation, due to the presence of 238 U, 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in sand samples collected in some locations in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), analyzing by gamma spectrometry and using an HPGe detector. The technique used for gamma analysis was gamma spectrometry, and the software used to analyze peaks and obtain counts was LabSOCS. In this context, the average activity concentration values of 226 Ra (66.7 ± 1.2) and 40 K (647 ± 31) Bq kg −1 are higher than the world mean activity concentration of 50, 50 and 500 Bq kg −1 for these three radionuclides. However, the value of 232 Th (40.6 ± 0.7) Bq kg −1 and Raeq (175 ± 5) Bq kg −1 are less than the world average of 50 Bq kg −1 and 370 Bq kg −1 , respectively. The estimation of the average values for Annual Effective Dose (0.51 ± 0.01) and Dutch Radiation Performance Index (0.52 ± 0.01) was carried out, with values below the maximum recommended limit for the public. Only one sample had a higher value and the other samples are within the levels required for environmental control. However, the mean values found in this present study, when compared to those of other authors mentioned here, showed higher values. Therefore, most samples have safe values to be used by people in building their homes.

Abstract:Introduction: Beach sand is one of the widely used aggregates in construction, especially in coastal areas. However, beach sand contains a hidden risk, namely radioactive hazards. This research will analyze the radioactive activity of nuclides 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K on beach sand and calculate the health risk potential in radiation exposure to the household. Methods: Beach sands sampling was carried out on Madura Island, Bali, and Lombok in 2016. All samples were ovensifted and then put into Marinelli to be chopped using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detectors for three days. Results and Discussion: The average of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K radionuclide activity on the beach sand in Madura were respectively 31.46 Bq/kg, 40.12 Bq/kg, and 334.04 Bq/ kg; in Bali were 25.10 Bq/kg, 7.71 Bq/kg, and 165.15. Bq/kg; and in Lombok the amount is 25.88 Bq/kg, 8.25 Bq/kg and 171.99 Bq/kg. The calculation of the radium equivalent (Raeq) value on beach sand in Madura, Bali, and Lombok has the highest value of 132.72 Bq/kg, 54.06 Bq/kg, and 55.92 Bq/kg. The gamma index (I) in Madura, Bali, and Lombok was 1.02; 0.39; and 0.40. For the calculation of Hex and Hin in Madura, Bali, and Lombok, the highest were 0.38; 0.15; 0.15; and 0.48; 0.23; 0.24. Conclusion: The activity of the three types of natural radionuclides from the three regions is still below the threshold value. Analysis of potential health risks showed in the gamma index value (I) indicator, which exceeds the safe threshold in the Madura beach sand sample.
Multivariate statistical approach on distribution of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides and associated radiation indices along the north-western coastline of Aegean Sea, Greece

Abstract:A comprehensive radiological survey using multivariate statistical analysis was carried out to evaluate the distribution of 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, 235U, and 137Cs, and associated radiation indices in beach sand samples of the coastal area of the Aegean Sea. The activity concentration of selected radionuclides was measured and no clue of recent migration of radiocaesium by not only precipitation but also through an indirect way, such as ocean runoff, was found. As part of radiological risk assessment, external radiation hazard index, radium equivalent activity, effective dose, and absorbed dose rate were estimated. Pearson correlation, cluster, and PCA analysis were used by processing observed radiological parameters to determine the correlation between the radiological parameters and locations. Pearson correlation shows a strong association between all parameters and activity of 226Ra and 232Th. A spatial distribution map was provided to a distinct visual representation of the distribution of radionuclide contents in the study area.

Abstract:The activity concentration of natural radionucides such as 40K, 226Ra and 232Th and radon surface and mass exhalation rates of the soil were assessed and the related radiometric parameters have been estimated from the activities of the samples from beaches of coastal Kerala including some high background radiation areas (HBRAs). The activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th were estimated using NaI (Tl) gamma ray spectrometry and the radon mass and surface exhalation rate has been estimated using the 'Can technique' with LR-115 solid state nuclear track detectors. The estimated values indicate that the radionuclide concentrations in the study area were within the recommended limit except for Kollam district when compared with world average values. Radon exhalation rate found to vary according to grain size of the soil. Dose parameters have been evaluated in order to verify the radiological protection of the general public. The results of the present systematic investigation are presented and discussed in detail in the manuscript.

Abstract:This study investigates the naturally occurring radionuclides in Egyptian black sands collected from the Mediterranean Sea Coast, an area rich in sediments from the White Nile, Blue Nile, and Atbara rivers. The black sands mainly comprise two groups of minerals: the gangue group, consisting of quartz, feldspar, amphiboles, pyroxenes, epidote, and micas, and the economic minerals group, which includes magnetite, garnet, zircon, monazite, and uncommon commercial minerals like thorite. A gamma spectrometry with a NaI (Tl) detector was employed to analyze black sand samples for the presence of radionuclides. Additionally, radium equivalent activities (Ra eq ), absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose, gamma radiation hazard index (I γ ), external hazard index, internal hazard index (H in ), and lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were calculated based on the measured activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K. This comprehensive analysis contributes valuable insights into the radiological properties and potential hazards associated with Egyptian black sands. Due to the significant radioactive risk associated with these black sand samples, specifically in the Mediterranean Sea Alexandria coastal area, must be considered while using them as building materials. Measured values include Ra-226 (56 Bq/kg), Th-232 (77 Bq/kg), and K-40 (55 Bq/kg).

Abstract:Natural radioactivity was assessed in sediment samples collected along southern coastline of Tamil Nadu. Average activity concentrations of 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K were determined (29 ± 3, 218 ± 6, and 80 ± 5 Bq kg –1 , respectively). Calculated parameters included radium equivalent activity (347 ± 12 Bq kg –1 ), absorbed dose rate (273 ± 10 nGy h –1 ), annual effective dose rate (0.33 ± 0.01 mSv y –1 ), external hazard index (0.94 ± 0.03), annual gonadal dose equivalent (1026 ± 35 mSv y –1 ), and excess lifetime cancer risk (1.17 ± 0.03). Multivariate statistical analyses were employed to examine correlations among the radioactive variables. The presence of heavy minerals in the samples was confirmed using X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:The specific activities of natural (40K, 226Ra and 232Th) and anthropogenic radionuclides (137Cs) in 314 surface soil samples collected from three provinces (Phuket, Phang-Nga and Krabi) along the Andaman sea coast in southern region of Thailand were studied and evaluated. Experimental results were obtained by using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector and gamma spectrometry analysis system. It was found that the mean values of specific activities of 40K, 226Ra, 232Th and 137Cs were 2859.63 ± 209.83, 157.10 ± 8.06, 137.16 ± 7.26 and 4.88 ± 2.34 Bq/kg, respectively. Furthermore, four radiological hazard indices which are absorbed dose rate in air (D), radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex) and annual effective dose rate (AEDout) in the area under consideration were also calculated and came out to be 277.11 ± 16.96 nGy/h, 575.16 ± 34.67 Bq/kg, 1.55 ± 0.09 and 0.34 ± 0.02 mSv/y, respectively. The experimental results were also compared and found to be comparable with national and global radioactivity measurements and evaluations. Moreover, the radioactive contour maps of the investigated area were also created and presented in this paper.

Abstract:The Kanyakumari coast is known to be a high background natural radiation area due to the placer deposits of heavy minerals such as ilmenite, monazite, and rutile. The Kanyakumari river sediments that could be the source of the elevated amounts of natural radionuclides in the coastal sands have been studied in this paper. The activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K were determined using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. The mean activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K were found to be 75 Bq kg −1 , 565 Bq kg −1 , and 360 Bq kg −1 , respectively. The mean absorbed dose rate was 395 nGy h −1 . Radiological hazard parameters were studied and compared with the world average values. The contribution of 232 Th to the total dose rate was found to be higher than that of the two other radionuclides. The high mean ratio of 232 Th/ 226 Ra suggested an enrichment of 232 Th and the occurrence of 226 Ra leaching due to an oxidizing environment. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out for the radionuclides in order to discriminate the source of the sediments. This study provides new insights into the distribution of natural radionuclides in sediments of rivers and streams.

Abstract:Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the sand samples and the health hazards associated with them utilizing a NaI (Tl) gamma spectrometer. The average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 24.8 ± 10.1, 39.8 ± 16.4 and 531.3 ± 52.8 Bq kg−1, respectively. The calculated radiological hazard parameters, including radium equivalent activity, absorbed gamma dose and effective dose rate, were found to be 122.7 ± 34.0 Bq kg−1, 57.7 ± 14.9 nGy h−1 and 0.3 ± 0.1 mSv y−1, respectively. Notably, these results were observed to be below the recommended thresholds. Other measured hazard indices were also lower than the prescribed values. From a radiological perspective, the present study concludes that the sand samples do not pose any threat to human health when utilized as a building material.

Assessment of Radioactivity Level in the Terrestrial and Marine Organisms in Yangjiang and Its Adjacent Areas (China)

Abstract:In order to assess the radioactive level in the terrestrial and marine organisms in Yangjiang and the adjacent areas, 90Sr, gross beta and gamma-emitting radionuclides (238U, 226Ra, 228Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs, 51Cr, 55Fe, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co and 65Zn) were analyzed from 2011 to 2012. The annual effective doses were estimated in the high natural radioactive background areas in Yangjiang (HBRAYJ). The specific activities of 238U, 228Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs in all organisms were <0.05-5.20, 0.30-14.50, 0.11-3.58, 11.1-148.0 and <0.003-0.088 Bq/kg, whilst 51Cr, 55Fe, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co, 65Zn and 110mAg were below the minimum detectable activity. 90Sr and gross beta specific activities were 20.0-143.0 and 0.021-0.316 Bq/kg. Results show that 228Th was significantly higher than 238U and 226Ra of natural U series in organisms due to the rich-Th soils in the HBRAYJ; 228Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs and 90Sr were greatly lower than the limited concentrations in Chinese foods. The internal dose mainly contributes to natural 40K, 226Ra and 228Th. It is useful to provide some basic data and assess the radiological risk from the HBRAYJ and Yangjiang nuclear power plants in future.

Abstract:The assessment of radiological impact to the environment is usually carried out by the dose rate estimation to hypothetical entities named Reference Animals and Plants (RAPs). There are many codes to carry out this assessment, which requires the definition of a scenario and using site-specific transfer parameters when possible. Transfer parameters present a geographical bias, as they are mostly derived from temperate and arctic climate datasets, but there is a scarcity of data for Mediterranean climates. In this study, a terrestrial Mediterranean scenario was defined using the distribution of activity concentrations of anthropogenic ( 90 Sr, 137 Cs) and naturally occurring radionuclides ( 40 K, 210 Pb, 210 Po, 226,228 Ra, 235,238 U, 232 Th) in Cáceres province (Spain). Site-specific transfer factors, CR wo-media , defined as the ratio between the concentration in the whole organism and the medium (soil in this case) were considered. Dose rate assessments for terrestrial RAPs were carried out using Tier 3 in ERICA Tool, ranging 0.23–3.73 μGy/h which is below the screening level of 10 μGy/h. Therefore, no harmful effects are expected to occur. Internal dose rate predominates over external one because the main contributors are naturally occurring radionuclides (in most cases 40 K, 226,228 Ra, 210 Pb, 210 Po), which are mostly α-emitting radionuclides. These results can be used for the evaluation of other radiological and nuclear installations in Mediterranean climates, as they set the background dose rate.

Abstract:Gamma spectrometry was employed to determine activity concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides 238 U, 232 Th and 40 K in sediment samples collected from Vellanathuruthu to Thumpoly of Kerala Coast using NaI(Tl) detector and to evaluate the radiation hazards. The levels and distribution of radionuclides in sediments from this coastal area have been determined. The activities ranges and mean (in bracket) values for 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K are 78.92 to 1493 Bq kg −1 (552.63), 94.76 to 2856.46 (851.24) Bq kg −1 and 30 to 2399.20 (678.61) Bq kg −1 respectively. The mean activity of 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K are higher than the global average values (35 Bq kg −1 for 238 U, 400 Bq kg −1 for 40 K, and 30 Bq kg −1 for 232 Th) of these radionuclides in the sediment and it may be due the presence of rich deposits of black sands. The radium equivalent activity was estimated to range from 216.74 to 5762.48 Bq kg −1 (1822.17). The average absorbed dose rate was determined to vary from 94.96 to 2515.83 nGyh −1 (797.97) and the annual effective dose was estimated to range from 0.12 to 3.09 mSvy −1 (0.98). Additionally, it was estimated that the average external hazard index was 4.92 and the average internal hazard index was 6.41 respectively. The computed radiation indices for all samples were compared to internationally accepted standards, showing that they are above the recommended limits. The results of the present investigation indicate that the radioactivity in the region is slightly above the global average values.

Abstract:This work is a first contribution to the knowledge of natural radionuclides (226Ra, 238U, 40K, and 232Th) activities in phosphate rock (NORM), phosphogypsum, and phosphogypsum foam (TENORM) from the coastal fertilizer plants of Gabes (Southeastern Tunisia) and the assessment of their radiation hazards on human health and the surrounding environment. In the three studied materials, activities were found to be in the range of 35.4 (40K)-375.1 (226Ra), 10.0 (40K)-220.2 (226Ra), and 79.2 (232Th)-1168.6 Bq kg-1 (226Ra), respectively. Considering the studied radionuclides and materials, the corresponding decreasing activity orders were found to be 226Ra > 238U > 40K > 232Th and PGF > PR > PG, respectively. All human health hazard indices exceeded the worldwide recommended safety limits, which show that the workers in Gabes phosphate fertilizer plants as well as the neighboring human community may potentially be exposed to significant radiation, which may cause several diseases and malformations. It is therefore recommended to avoid and/or reduce the potential fertilizer industry radioactive impact in the area.

Abstract:The distribution of natural nuclide gamma-ray activities and their respective annual effective dose rates, produced by potassium-40 (40K), uranium-238 (238U), thorium-232 (232Th), and radium-226 (226Ra), were determined for 14 oilfield scale samples from the Middle East. Accumulated radioactive materials concentrate in tubing and surface equipment, and workers at equipment-cleaning facilities and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) disposal facilities are the population most at risk for exposure to NORM radiation. Gamma-spectra analysis indicated that photo-gamma lines represent the parents of 10 radioactive nuclides: 234Th, plutonium-239, actinium-228, 226Ra, lead-212 (212Pb), 214Pb, thallium-238 (208Tl), bismuth-212 (212Bi), 214Bi, and 40K. These nuclides represent the daughters of the natural radioactive series 238U and 232Th with 40K as well. The mean activity concentration of 238U, 232Th, and 40K were found to be 25.8 ± 11.6, 18.3 ± 8.1, and 4487.2 ± 2.5% Bq kg−1 (average values for 14 samples), respectively. The annual effective dose rates and the absorbed doses in air, both indoor and outdoor, for the samples were obtained as well. The results can be used to assess the respective hazard on workers in the field and represent a basis for revisiting current engineering practices.

Abstract:A systematic study of the distribution of the Naturally Occurring Radioactivity in stone dust and crushed stone, has been carried out with an objective of establishing reliable baseline data on the radiation level and hence to evaluate hazard indices approach and the production of radioactive heat (RHP) due to radiation exposure to the workers and to the inhabitants of the studied area. Twenty-six samples have been collected from different locations in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). To calculate the specific activity, gamma ray spectrometry and a detector of High Purity Germanium (HPGe; Canberra, 30% relative efficiency) was used. The activity concentration of 238 U, 226 Ra 232 Th and 40 K ranged from 29.3 ± 18.6 to 206.8 ± 21.5 Bq kg -1 , 30.3 1.0 to 134.3 1.8, 27.9 0.7 to 86.2 0.9 Bq kg -1 , and 734.9 35.1 to 1204.8 ± 53.5 Bq kg -1 , respectively. The mean values of the I ex , I in , I γ , I α , A UI , I RP112Rn , I PA , I PI and I Yu indices were 0.68 ± 0.09, 0.92 ± 0.12, 0.93 ± 0.12, 0.43 ± 0.07, 0.88 ± 0.20, 1.25 ± 0.21, 0.34 ± 0.05, 0.75 ± 0.10, 0.63 ± 0.08 and 34. ± 6.31, respectively. The average radioactive heat production (RHP) of 2.01 ± 0.28 Wm −3 was above the values found in the literature, which may contribute to the heat flow in the study area because the raw materials that make up the samples showed a high value of environmental radioactivity. The Brazilian Hazard Index to assess the radiological risk of crushed stone and stone dust was created and the average value was 0.74 ± 0.10, a value below 1, which means only moderate control over the use of these materials, with no indication of restriction to the its use.

Natural radioactivity and dose assessment in surface soil from Guangdong, a high background radiation province in China

Abstract:Guangdong province has been renown for its high natural background radiation in the world. In this study, the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K were measured using a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector-based gamma spectrometry system on 490 surface soil samples collected from across this province. The concentration of radionuclides ranged from 12.0 to 264.3 Bq/kg for 238U with an average of 79.3 Bq/kg, from 10.3 to 376.0 Bq/kg for 232Th with an average of 101.0 Bq/kg, from 7.6 to 298.3 Bq/kg for 226Ra with an average of 75.1 Bq/kg, and from 8.2 to 1747.1 Bq/kg for 40K with an average of 535.8 Bq/kg, respectively. The mean values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and external hazard index (Hex) for the soil samples in the study area were calculated to be 260.8 (28.3–850.3) Bq/kg and 0.70 (0.08–2.30), respectively. The gamma absorbed dose rates (D) in air range from 13.6 to 381.5 nGy/h, with an arithmetic average of 120.0 nGy/h, while the annual effective dose rates (AEDR) were determined to range from 16.7 to 467.8 μSv/y, with an arithmetic average of 147.2 μSv/y. The spatial distribution of calculated Raeq, Hex, D in air and AEDR according to the distribution patterns of NORs was contrasted by the mean of the international values and previous studies on the area. This study provides the essential information on the levels of background radiation in Guangdong.

Abstract:Natural radioactive concentration assessment was conducted on sediment, water, and biota obtained on Vaan and Koswari islands in the Tuticorin group of islands, Tamil Nadu, India. For biotic and abiotic components, radiation profiles such as gross alpha, beta, primordial radionuclide, polonium, and lead analyses were performed. The gross α and β range from BDL to 15.18 ± 1.7 Bq/kg and 40.43 ± 4.9 Bq/kg to 105.12 ± 11.7 Bq/kg, respectively. Primordial radionuclides were analyzed using Nal(TI)-based scintillator with PC-MCA, and the concentrations ranged from 13.43 ± 3.3 Bq/kg to 30.97 ± 9.6 Bq/kg with a mean of 21.31 ± 2.7 Bq/kg for 238 U; for 232 Th, the values ranged from 11.09 ± 2.6 Bq/kg to 33.55 ± 9.5 Bq/kg with an average value of 23.89 ± 3.7 Bq/kg; and for 40 K, the values are 93.33 ± 27.3 Bq/kg to 219.91 ± 39.6 Bq/kg with an average value of 148.27 ± 21.7 Bq/kg. The present study values are lesser than the world average values. 210 Po and 210 Pb concentrations with an average value were determined to be 33.13 Bq/L and 16.56 Bq/L, 47.55 Bq/L and 22.37 Bq/L in the water sample, and 50.437 Bq kg1 and 62.012 Bq kg1, 46.99 Bq/kg and 58.625 Bq/kg in sediments of Vaan island and Koswari island. The concentrations of 210 Po and 210 Pb of Pogonias cromis were 19.27 ± 1.5 Bq/kg and 8.27 ± 1.01 Bq/kg, Belonidae 28.54 ± 2.4 Bq/kg and 18.32 ± 2.3 Bq/kg, Lepisosteidae 18.68 ± 1.4 Bq/kg and 11.17 ± 1.8 Bq/kg. The committed effective dosage was determined to be 35.74–54.61 μSv/y for 210 Po and 25.39–56.25 μSv/y for 210 Pb, in which the 210 Pb value is lower; however, the 210 Po value is higher than the global average value. The annual committed effective dosage as well as the radiological hazard indices were assessed and found to be much below the global average and the recommended limit, respectively. This research provides an extensive analysis of natural background radiation and establishes a baseline report on the radiological profile of biotic and abiotic factors in the Tuticorin group of islands, namely Vaan and Koswari, in Tamil Nadu, India.
