Abstract:Lymphoid cells isolated form several types of mouse mammary tumors are capable of stimulating tumor cell growth or survival in MCT assays. Lymph node and spleen cells of mice bearing such a tumor are specifically cytotoxic to the tumor cells. Surgical removal of the tumor is followed in 4 to 7 days by the appearance of stimulatory capacity in spleens and lymph nodes. By day 10, cytotoxic cells specific for the sensitizing tumor are again detected. These reach a peak on day 13. By day 17 no reactivity is detectable. The functional distribution of tumor-reactive lymphoid cells is different between tumor masses and peripheral lymphoid organs.

Abstract:An analysis of natural radioactivity in soils collected around Chinese Nuclear Test site is presented. The radioactivities of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs were determined by HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry, and potential radiological hazards were evaluated. The depth profiles of radionuclides in three selected areas of Gansu were analyzed, and a new method for detection of 137Cs specific activities were measured using ultra-low background gamma spectrometer named GeTHU-II developed by Tsinghua University at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The radioactivity concentrations of 137Cs were significantly different in these three areas and gradually decreased from surface to underground 15 cm.

Abstract:Surface and soil core samples from northeast China were analyzed for Pu isotopes. The measured 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios and 239 + 240 Pu/ 137 Cs activity ratios revealed that the global fallout is the dominant source of Pu and 137 Cs at these sites. Migration behavior of Pu varying with land type and human activities resulted in different distribution of Pu in surface soils. A sub-surface maximum followed by exponential decline of 239 + 240 Pu concentrations was observed in an undisturbed soil core, with a total 239 + 240 Pu inventory of 86.9 Bq/m 2 and more than 85% accumulated in 0 ~ 20 cm layers. While only half inventory of Pu was obtained in another soil core and no sub-surface maximum value occurred. Erosion of topsoil in the site should be the most possible reason for the significantly lower Pu inventory, which is also supported by the reported 137 Cs profiles. These results demonstrated that Pu could be applied as an ideal substitute of 137 Cs for soil erosion study in the future.

Abstract:The vertical distributions and downward migrations of the global fallout derived Pu239+240 and Am-241 in diverse types of Chinese soils (forest, grassland and desert) were studied. The mean Pu239+240 and Am-241 activity concentrations in the investigated soil cores were 0.28-0.69 mBq/g and 0.13-037 mBq/g, respectively, while the accumulative inventories were 61.53-138.99 Bq/m(2) for Pu239+240 and 28.29-61.05 Bq/m(2) for Am-241. The convection-dispersion equation (CDE) was used to calculate the migration parameters of 239+240PU and higher apparent dispersion coefficients (D) were observed for the acidic forest soils compared with the alkaline grassland and desert soils; meanwhile a compartment model was employed to compare the migration of 239+240PU and Am-241 in successive soil layers which showed that the migration behaviors of 239+240PU and Am-241 were rather similar; both velocities were less than 0.3 cm/y in diverse types of soils and these findings were compatible with those of short-term laboratory simulation experiments in China. Global Fallout Pu Isotopes, 137cs and 237np Records in the Sediments of Lake Xingkai and Their Response to Environmental Changes in the Catchment

Abstract:Plutonium (Pu) isotopes, neptunium-237 (Np-237) and cesium-137 (Cs-137) in the environment have emerged as important tools for promoting geochemical studies. To elucidate their source terms, deposition process, and the geochemical behavior, as well as their response to catchment environmental changes in lacustrine environment, Pu-239,Pu- 240, Cs-137 and Np-237 were determined for the first time in a sediment core collected from the Lake Xingkai. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (0.163-0.178) in all sediment samples corresponded well with the typical global fallout value of similar to 0.18, indicating that there were no other significant radioactive source inputs. The activity concentrations of Pu239+240, Cs-137, and Np-237 were 0.010-1.030 Bq kg (-1), 6.4-30.1 Bq kg -1, and (0.020-2.195) x 10-3 Bq kg(-1), respectively. They presented similar vertical distribution patterns, with a typical global fallout peak (15-16 cm) corresponding to the year of 1964. On the other hand, the 237Np/239Pu atom ratios exhibited a wide range (0.207-1.306), and showed a trend of increasing values with depth, implying different geochemical behaviors of these two elements. Using the advection-dispersion equation model (ADE), the obtained apparent dispersion coefficient of 237Np (0.58 +/- 0.09 cm2 yr(-1)) was higher than that of 239+240Pu (0.38 +/- 0.07 cm2 yr(-1)), indicating that Np has greater mobility than Pu. The total global fallout inventories of 239+240Pu, Cs-137, and 237Np were 145, 4592, and 0.291 Bq m- 2, respectively. Approximately 46% of the total global fallout was derived from riverine input, indicating that severe soil erosion occurred in the catchment of Lake Xingkai in the past decades.

Abstract:The transport and deposition pathways of anthropogenic radionuclides at the global scale, particularly volatile 129 I, remain somewhat elusive due to a dearth of comprehensive investigations. To gain a better understanding of the transport dynamics and deposition mechanism of anthropogenic 129 I in the terrestrial environment, one hundred surface soil samples collected from northeast China were analyzed for 129 I and 127 I concentrations in this study. Our findings reveal that 129 I/ 127 I atomic ratios in the mid-eastern Inner Mongolia (MIM) were approximately an order of magnitude higher than the rest of the investigated area. This is, besides the global fallout and the long-range transport of 129 I released from the European nuclear reprocessing plants via westerly winds, possibly attributed to the dust with high 129 I levels from the East Asian arid regions. In addition to the significant dust-induced 129 I input, the unique meteorological conditions and topographical features in the MIM synergistically contribute to the pronounced accumulation and deposition of 129 I in this region. This study will provide novel insights into the transport and deposition mechanism of anthropogenic radionuclides, which is significant for the assessment of anthropogenic nuclear activities on the environment in the future.

First study of 237Np in Chinese soils: Source, distribution and mobility in comparison with plutonium isotopes

Abstract:In this study, the distribution and migration of Np-237 and 239+240PU in soils in the vicinity (<5 km) of Qinshan and Tianwan Nuclear Power Plants in China were studied, which is the first specific study of global fallout Np-237 in Chinese soils. The Np-237 and Pu239+240 concentrations in surface soils showed large spatial inhomogeneity. A remarkable Pu239+240 concentration (4.783 mBq/g) was observed in a surface soil near Qinshan NPP and stands for the ever reported highest value in the Chinese soils. The inventories of (239+240)pu in two Qinshan and Tianwan soil cores were estimated to be 128.8 Bq/m(2) and 121.0 Bq/m(2), respectively; while the Np-237 inventories were 0.039 Bq/m(2) and 0.035 Bq/m(2) at these sites, respectively. The Pu-240/Pu-239 atomic ratios in these soils indicated that the global fallout is the main source of Pu in these regions. However, the non-isotopic Np-237/Pu-239 atomic ratio in environmental soil is not a sensitive indicator for source identification. Furthermore, we conducted pilot study on the migration behaviors of Np-237 and Pu239+240 in soil core at Qinshan site with the Convection-Dispersion Equation (CDE) model. The obtained apparent dispersion coefficients of Np-237 (2.82 +/- 2.06 cm(2)/y) was 5 times higher than that of Pu239+240 (0.57 +/- 0.16 cm(2)/y), proving that Np-237 has stronger migration ability than Pu isotopes in the Qinshan soil. Finally, we predicted that with the increase of migration time, both Np-237 and (239+240)pu concentration in the soil will gradually become more evenly distributed among different soil layers due to the dominant dispersion effects. Abstract:Radioactive nuclides cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) possess long half-lives, with 135Cs at approximately 2.3 million years and 87Sr at about 49 billion years. Their persistent accumulation can result in long-lasting radioactive contamination of soil ecosystems. This study employed geo-accumulation index (Igeo), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (PEPI), health risk assessment model (HRA), and Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the pollution and health risks of Cs and Sr in the surface soil of different functional areas in a typical mining city in China. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was used to elucidate the potential sources of Cs and Sr and the respective contribution rates of natural and anthropogenic sources. The findings indicate that soils in the mining area exhibited significantly higher levels of Cs and Sr pollution compared to smelting factory area, agricultural area, and urban residential area. Strontium did not pose a potential ecological risk in any studied functional area. The non-carcinogenic health risk of Sr to the human body in the study area was relatively low. Because of the lack of parameters for Cs, the potential ecological and human health risks of Cs was not calculated. The primary source of Cs in the soil was identified as the parent material from which the soil developed, while Sr mainly originated from associated contamination caused by mining activities. This research provides data for the control of Cs and Sr pollution in the surface soil of mining city.

Geochemical Distribution and Environmental Risks of Radionuclides in Soils and Sediments Runoff of a Uranium Mining Area in South China

Abstract:Uranium mining activities have contributed to the distribution and uptake of radionuclides, which have increased the active concentrations of natural radionuclides in environmental media, causing elevated human health risks. The present study aims to assess the spatial distribution characteristics of natural radionuclides in the surface soils and river sediments of the typical granite uranium mining area in South China, as well as investigate the geochemical features of natural radionuclides in the soil and sediments to understand their migration processes. The activity concentrations for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17–3925 Bq/kg, 50–1180 Bq/kg, 29–459 Bq/kg, and 240–1890 Bq/kg, respectively. The open-pit mining areas and tailings pond locations exhibited the highest concentrations of activity for all these radionuclides. This distribution points to an elevated potential health risk due to radiological exposure in these specific areas. Additionally, the values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) in those areas were higher than the limits recommended by ICRP (2021). 238U and 226Ra have a significant correlation (0.724), and the cluster analysis was showing a statistically meaningful cluster below 5 indicated that they have similar behavior during parent rock weathering and watershed erosion, and the distribution of 232Th and 40K were influenced by the addition of rock types. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, 238U/40K, and 226Ra/40K variation indicated that 40K more mobile than 226Ra and 238U, U(VI) was reduced to U(IV) by organic matter in the downstream area and re-entered into the sediment during the sediment surface runoff in the small watershed of the uranium ore open-pit mining area. Therefore, it is necessary to further seal up and repair the tailings landfill area.

Abstract:Soil samples collected in southwestern China were analyzed for Pu isotopes. The (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios were around 0.18, which indicated the dominant source of global fallout. Consistent sub-surface maximums followed by exponential decline of (239+240)Pu activities in the soil cores were observed. Most of the Pu has still remained in the 0-10 cm layers since its deposition. Convection velocities and dispersion coefficients for Pu migration in the soils were estimated by the convection-dispersion equation (CDE) model. The effective convection velocities and effective dispersion coefficients ranged from 0.05 to 0.11 cm/y and from 0.06 to 0.29 cm(2)/y, respectively. Other factors that control the vertical migration of Pu in soil besides precipitation, soil particle size distribution and organic matter were suggested. Long-term migration behaviors of Pu in the soils were simulated. The results provide the Pu background baseline for further environmental monitoring and source identification of non-global fallout Pu inputs in the future.

Abstract:To study the Pu concentration and isotope ratio distributions present in China, the 239+240Pu total activities and 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in core soil samples from Hubei Province in central China were investigated using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). The activities ranged from 0.019 to 0.502mBqg−1 and the 239+240Pu inventories of 45 and ∼55Bqm−2 agree well with that expected from global fallout. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in the soil ranged from 0.172 to 0.220. The ratios are similar to typical global fallout values. Hence, any close-in fallout contribution from the Chinese nuclear weapons tests, mainly conducted in the 1970s, must have either been negligible or had a similar 240Pu/239Pu ratio to that of global fallout. The top 10cm layer of the soil contributes ∼90% of the total inventory and the maximum concentrations appeared in the 2–4cm or 4–6cm layers. It is suggested that climatic conditions and organic content are the two main factors that affect the vertical migration of plutonium in soil.

Abstract:The migration of radionuclides is a critical threat to the soil and groundwater environment. This study investigates highly radiological toxic 239+240Pu in 647 surface soils and 66 soil cores in China. First, the spatial distributions of 239+240Pu activities and 240Pu/239Pu ratios are presented in Chinese surface soils. Second, four different types of vertical distribution of 239+240Pu, namely 45.4%, 40.9%, 9.1% and 4.5% of Chinese soil cores proportions are integrated using statistical analysis. Furthermore, different soil types are accompanied by different 239+240Pu vertical distributions, which relate closely to the 239+240Pu migration. Finally, based on the Convection Dispersion Equation (CDE) model, the present work find that the apparent convection velocities of 239+240Pu are ranging from 0.00032 ± 0.00031 cm a-1 to 0.473 ± 0.083 cm a-1. As shown by the four typical vertical activity distribution of 239+240Pu in soil cores, the deepened activity maximum value position of 239+240Pu implies a fast migration rate or apparent convection velocity. This study, for the first time, suggests a significant linear correlation (R2 = 0.847) between the depth of 239+240Pu maximum value (cm) and the apparent convection velocity (v, cm a-1). We hypothesize that v usually does not exceed 0.5 cm a-1 in the CDE model. A significant linear correlation is also identified between apparent dispersion coefficient (D, cm2 a-1) and v2 in Chinese soil cores from the CDE model. It will provide an important reference for harmful heavy metal migration research in the future.

Abstract:Surface soil samples collected in the Jiuquan region in the downwind area of the Chinese nuclear test site (CNTs) were analyzed for Pu isotopes. The 239+240 Pu activities ranged from 0.025 ± 0.009 to 0.89 ± 0.16 mBq g −1 , varying significantly with different sampling sites. The Dunhuang city that is located in the southwestern part of the Jiuquan region received the heaviest Pu deposition ( 239+240 Pu activities, 0.23–0.89 mBq g −1 ). Most of the 240 Pu/ 239 Pu isotopic ratios were similar with that of the global fallout. However, the low values (0.080–0.147) observed in three sampling sites further supported the finding of Pu originated from CNTs in that region.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple review of the progress and primary achievements of the radiation protection laboratory over its two decades of research. The main research subjects of the laboratory are naturally occurring radionuclides, their environmental behaviors, and the dose evaluation of radon exposure to the public. We developed several precise measurement methods for real environmental surveys and investigations on radon and its progeny. Furthermore, to support related research fields that use radon as a radioactive tracer, in situ continuous measurement techniques for radon in the atmosphere, soil, and water bodies were established. A one-year continuous measurement provided the typical year average (4.9 +/- 2.7 Bq/m(3)) of radon progeny concentration in Beijing, which is consistent with the world average (5 Bq/m(3)) recommended by UNSCEAR. Furthermore, for artificial radionuclides, we conducted wide research on Pu isotopes in Chinese environments. Our study focused on the development of analytical methods for the analysis of Pu in various environmental samples based on ICP-MS. Moreover, we investigated Pu distribution in the downwind area of the Lop Nor nuclear test site and assessed the vertical distributions and migration of Pu in the soil in Southwest China. In the Jiuquan region, we collected surface and core soil samples and determined the Pu239+240 activities and Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratios in these to assess the level of Pu contamination and the sources of Pu in this region. Using Pu isotopes from the Chinese nuclear tests, we found that in most Jiuquan soil samples, the Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratios were below the global fallout value, suggesting this area was contaminated by Pu isotopes from the Chinese nuclear test sites. The average Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratio in the soil samples was similar to 0.16. Besides plutonium, C-14 is another artificial radionuclide we investigated. C-14 is a radioisotope produced as a byproduct in various nuclear facilities and released in the environment under normal operation; it is considered the main dose contributor to the public, making it one of the most important radioisotopes in environmental radiation evaluation. The C-14 analysis of the tree ring samples collected 2 km away from Qinshan NPP revealed that the enhanced values were primarily owing to C-14 discharged from two heavy reactors of Plant III. Moreover, a good correlation existed between the C-14 discharged from Plant III in the growing season and the increased concentration of C-14. We found that almost all C-14 released from Qinshan NPP was deposited within a radius of 6.5 km in 2010, and the maximal C-14 specific activity of most samples is 265.6 Bq/kg C, which is 41.8 Bq/kg C higher than that of the background. For dose contribution to the public, the effective dose resulting from the C-14 discharged from Qinshan NPP was estimated to be 0.5 mu Sv in 2010, which is negligible compared with the annual dose limit for the public (0.25 mSv).

Abstract:The activity of 239+240Pu in surface soils from different areas of China varies,but typically less than 1 mBq/g.It was indicated by previous study that no influence from Chinese Nuclear Test Site(CNTS) has occurred to the upwind areas.However,the Pu inventory at one point in downwind areas of CNTS is five times higher than that of global fallout and 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio in one lake sediment is below 0.18,which were suggested to be the influence of CNTS.Further field investigations in detail are necessary to master the total figure of CNTS.For the areas far away from CNTS,Pu inventory and 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio are both similar with global fallout.The forms of Pu vertical distribution vary for different soils,depending upon various factors(e.g.soil type,weather condition).

Abstract:For the first time, soil core samples from the Jiuquan region have been analyzed for Pu isotopes for radioactive source identification and radiological assessment. The Jiuquan region is in downwind from the Lop Nor Chinese nuclear test (CNT) site. The high Pu inventories (13 to 546 Bq/m2) in most of the sampling locations revealed that this region was heterogeneously contaminated by the regional fallout Pu from the CNTs. The contributions of the CNTs to the total Pu in soils were estimated to be more than 40% in most cases. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in the soils ranged from 0.059 to 0.186 with an inventory-weighted average of 0.158, slightly lower than that of global fallout. This atom ratio could be considered as a mixed fingerprint of Pu from the CNTs. In addition, Pu in soils of Jiuquan region had a faster downward migration rate compared with other investigated places in China.

Abstract:We investigated the different sources and their corresponding impact areas of Pu in Chinese surface soils to illustrate the state-of-the-art of the sources, levels and distributions of 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios as well as 239+240Pu activity concentrations in China. For the first time a moving average strategy in combination with statistical analysis was employed to partition geographic areas in China based on the reported 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio and 239+240Pu concentration data from public literature. During the partitioning, the median (MED) of the dataset was basically employed as a criteria in place of the commonly used arithmetic average (AM). Concisely, three areas were partitioned according to the different influences of Pu from the Lop Nor (LNTS) and Semipalatinsk (STS) test sites and the global fallout. The partitioned Ternary area (80° E–105° E, 35° N–50° N) was supposed to have multiple sources of Pu including the STS and LNTS besides the global fallout, which was characterized with slightly lower 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (MED = 0.174) as well as elevated 239+240Pu concentrations (MED = 0.416 mBq/g). Meanwhile, the Binary area (35° N–45° N, 100° E–115° E) was considered to have received the extra contribution from the high-yield nuclear tests at the LNTS besides the global fallout, resulting in the highest 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (MED = 0.200) across China. The remaining area was marked as the Unitary area, where it only received the exclusive contribution of global fallout. Furthermore, through the statistical analysis of the 240Pu/239Pu data in the Unitary area, we recommended a value of 0.186 ± 0.021 (AM ± SD) as a representative or area-specific 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio baseline to characterize the global fallout derived Pu in Chinese soils.

Abstract:The Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratio is a very effective tool for the identification of the origin of plutonium (Pu) in the soil environment. We examine a dataset of Pu-240/(PU)-P-239 atom ratios determined from surface and core soils at 240 sites across China. The data were compiled from 18 separate literature sources from the last 20 years. For the first time the spatial distribution (3 latitude bands and 7 natural regions) of the weighted average Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratios in Chinese soils is investigated. An area to the West of Xining City, shows a weighted average Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratio of 0.167 +/- 0.002, lower than that of average global fallout, which likely arises from the addition of local fallout radionuclides from the Chinese nuclear weapon tests at Lop Nor between 1964 and 1980. The Yumen and Jiuguan areas of Northwest China in particular show evidence of very low ratio material from the Chinese nuclear weapon tests. Excluding the impacted area around the test site the weighted average Pu-240/Pu-239 ratio of 0.182 +/- 0.002 suggests that global fallout is the main source of Pu in most Chinese soils.
