Abstract:Background: Sarcopenia is reported to be associated with depression. Recently, serum creatinine to cystatin C ratio (CCR) has been recommended as a promising biomarker for detecting sarcopenia. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between CCR and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults using the baseline data of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Methods: This study included 7083 participants aged 45 and older. A score of 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) >= 12 was used as the cut-off of having depressive symptoms. CCR was calculated by serum creatinine (mg/dL)/cystatin C (mg/L). The t-test and Chi-squared test were applied to compare the differences between the depressive symptoms group and no depressive symptoms group in both sexes. Unadjusted and adjust logistic regression models were used to further investigate the relationship between CCR and depressive symptoms. Results: In the fully adjusted logistic regression models, higher CCR was significantly correlated with a lower incidence of depressive symptoms in males (OR = 0.486, P = 0.001, 95 % CI = 0.314-0.752), but not in females (OR = 0.775 P = 0.184, 95 % CI = 0.532-1.129). Limitations: 1. Self-reported method was used to define depressive symptoms by CESD-10; 2. History of chronic diseases were all self-reported; 3. Residual bias was still possible after controlling for many confounding factors. Conclusions: Lower CCR was significantly correlated with increased depressive symptoms in males, but not in females. More studies are needed to further confirm this conclusion.

Abstract:Objective: We aimed to evaluate whether depression is associated with increased risk of dietary inflammatory index (DII) or energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) and whether the association is partly explained by insulin resistance (IR). Methods: Base on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2018. Univariate analyses of continuous and categorical variables were performed using t -test, ANOVA, and χ 2 test, respectively. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between DII or E-DII and depression in three different models. Mediation analysis was used to assess the potential mediation effects of homeostatic model assessment-IR (HOMA-IR). Results: A total of 70,190 participants were included, and the DII score was higher in the depressed group. DII score was related to all participant characteristics except age ( p < 0.05). After being included in covariates (Model 3), participants in the highest quartile of DII score have increased odds of depression ( OR : 1.82, 95% CI : 1.28–2.58) compared with those in the first quartile of DII score. And, a significant dose–response relationship was found ( p -trend <0.05). No interaction between DII and HOMA-IR was observed in terms of the risk of depression, and HOMA-IR did not find to play a mediating role in the association between DII and depression. Similar results were obtained for the association between E-DII and depression. Conclusion: Our results suggest that a higher pro-inflammatory diet increases the risk of depression in U.S. adults, while there was no evidence of a multiplicative effect of DII or E-DII and HOMA-IR on disease risk, nor of a mediating effect of HOMA-IR.

Abstract:Background: The primary objective of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) and the risk of depression in adults in the US. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016. Depression was assessed using the PHQ-9 questionnaire. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to study the relationship between PHR and the risk of depression. Subgroup and interaction analyses were performed to further understand these associations. Results: A total of 21,454 participants were included in this study. After full adjustment, PHR was significantly positively correlated with depression (OR = 1.33, 95%CI: 1.03-1.73). When PHR was converted into a categorical variable based on quartiles (Q1-Q4), the highest quartile of PHR was associated with an increased risk of depression compared to the lowest reference group (OR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.01-1.48). There was a linear dose-response relationship between PHR and the risk of depression (P-non-linear = 0.8038). The association remained significant in several subgroup analyses. However, the interaction test showed that none of the stratified variables were significant (all P for interaction >0.05). Limitation: Using self-assessment scales and inability to assess causality. Conclusion: This population-based cross-sectional study elucidated that PHR is significantly associated with an increased prevalence of depression in adults in the US.
Association between depression and diabetes among American adults using NHANES data from 2005 to 2020

Abstract:Depression impairs self-management in diabetic patients, exacerbates insulin resistance, and elevates glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, thereby increasing diabetes risk. This study analyzed data from 30,386 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), assessing depression severity using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and evaluating diabetes status through clinical markers such as HbA1c, random blood glucose, and fasting blood glucose. Participants were stratified by depression severity and diabetes status to examine the relationship between depression and diabetes risk. We applied descriptive statistics, logistic regression models, subgroup analyses, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) modeling to explore this association. The results revealed that greater depression severity was significantly associated with increased diabetes incidence, elevated HbA1c, fasting glucose, and insulin levels. Multivariate regression analysis confirmed a consistent positive correlation between depression severity and diabetes risk. Subgroup analyses further identified significant relationships between depression and various demographic and behavioral factors, including gender, race, BMI, smoking status, and prediabetic conditions. Additionally, the RCS model demonstrated a clear increase in diabetes risk with rising PHQ-9 scores. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that the severity of depression is positively correlated with the risk of diabetes, and this association may be closely linked to various glycemic and lipid metabolic parameters.

Abstract:Background: Diet and dietary inflammation play an important role in depression. The aim of this study was to assess the association of SFAs with depression risk and the mediating role of DII. Method: Among 22, 478 U.S. adults (≥ 20, years old) according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), univariate logistic regression, and multivariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between dietary intake of SFAs and the risk of depression. Dietary inflammation levels were evaluated using the DII. Mediation analysis was used to investigate the risk of DII and depression. The nonlinear relationship between SFAs and depression was assessed using restricted cubic spline (RCS). Results: There was a significant difference in SFA 6.0 dietary intake between depression and non-depression individuals. After adjusting for potential confounders, multifactorial logistic regression results showed that SFA 8.0 (Q3 1.58 (1.09, 2.30), P-value = 0.017; Q4 1.55 (1.00, 2.42), P-value = 0.050) may increase the prevalence factor for depression, SFA 14.0 (Q3 0.67 (0.47, 0.94), P-value = 0.020) may decrease the risk of depression. There were sex and age differences in the effects of different subtypes of SFAs on depression. Dietary intake of SFA 12.0 content showed a nonlinear relationship with the risk of depression (P-value = 0.005). Furthermore, DII was recognized as a mediator of the association between SFAs and the risk of depression. Conclusions: The findings suggest that dietary intake of SFAs is associated with the risk of depression in relation to the chain length of SFAs, and this may be due to the mediating effect of DII.

Abstract:Globally, the total estimated number of people living with depression increased by 18.4% between 2005 and 2015, with the prevalence being 4.8% in 2015. Many nutrient and diet patterns are proven to be correlated to depression, so we conducted this analysis to explore whether the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) score is associated with depression, and possibly to provide dietary measures to reduce the risk of depression. Data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2016), a cross-sectional and nationally representative database. The analytic sample was limited to adults: (1) age ≥20 with complete information of HEI-2015 and depression; (2) no missing data of demographics, BMI, drinking, smoking, and fasting plasma glucose. HEI-2015 was calculated using the Dietary Interview: Total Nutrient Intakes, First Day data file. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Weighted logistic regression models were used to explore the relationship between the HEI-2015 score and depression. The final study sample included 10,349 adults, with 51.4% of them being men, representing a population of about 167.8 million non-institutionalized U.S. adults. After multivariable adjustment, average HEI status (OR: 0.848, 95% CI: 0.846–0.849) and optimal HEI status (OR: 0.455, 95% CI: 0.453–0.456) were associated with reduced odds of depression. Poor diet quality is significantly associated with elevated depressive symptoms in U.S. adults. Aligning with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans reduces the risk of depression.

Abstract:Objectives: Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) has attracted attention because it is associated with a variety of diseases and is easy to measure. However, the relationship between non-HDL-C and depression is still unclear. Our aim was to assess the relationship between non-HDL-C and depression using the cross-sectional NHANES survey from 2005 to 2018. Methods: We examined the association between non-HDL-C and depression using weighted multivariable logistic regression models and subgroup analysis. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the robustness of the results. Results: There were 42,143 participants in this study and 8.6% had depression (weighted 7.53%). Non-HDL-C was higher in participants with depression compared to those without depression (weighted mean 3.64 vs. 3.73, p < 0.01). There was a positive association between non-HDL-C and depression with a 95% OR of 1.22 adjusted for multifactorial (95% CI,1.03–1.45). In subgroup analyses, non-HDL-C was positively associated with depression in men (OR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.01–1.70), normal BMI (OR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.66–1.32) and in participants without hypertension (OR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.01–1.66). Conclusion: Non-HDL-C positively correlated with depression, and further research may be better for clinical service.

Association of dietary vitamin C intake with depression in adults: A cross-sectional study of NHANES from 2005 to 2020

Abstract:Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression in adults. Methods This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2005 to 2020. Logistic regressions and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were used to assess the association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression. Additionally, we performed stratified and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the stability of the results. Results This study included 38,157 participants, with 3448 (9.04 %) of them experiencing depression. The vitamin C intake was negatively associated with depression after adjusting for all covariates (OR = 0.91, 95%CI: 0.88–0.94, P < 0.001). Similar inverse associations were observed when vitamin C intake was transformed into categorical variables. Individuals in higher quartiles of dietary vitamin C intake (Q2, Q3, and Q4) had lower odds ratios (ORs) compared to those in the lowest quartile (Q1), as indicated by adjusted ORs of 0.78 (95 % CI: 0.71–0.87, P < 0.001), 0.74 (95 % CI: 0.67–0.82, P < 0.001), and 0.73 (95 % CI: 0.65–0.81, P < 0.001), respectively. The RCS analysis found an L-shaped nonlinear relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and depression, after adjusting for all covariates ( P for non-linearity<0.001). Consumption of vitamin C was inversely associated with depression (OR = 0.994, 95%CI: 0.993–0.996, P < 0.001) for intakes below 93.61 mg, but there was no association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression ( P = 0.980) for intakes of 93.61 mg or higher. The inverse associations between vitamin C intake and depression remained robust in stratified and sensitivity analyses. Limitations This study was a cross-sectional study, and therefore unable to establish a causal relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and depression. We are unable to fully eliminate the confounding effects resulted from other unmeasured or unknown factors. Conclusion The study revealed a negative association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression, as well as an L-shaped nonlinear relationship between vitamin C intake and depression.

Abstract:Background The aim was to ascertain whether low-carbohydrate-diet (LCD) score and dietary macronutrient intake are associated with depression. Methods This cross-sectional study included 23,204 United States adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2018. Dietary macronutrient intake was evaluated by the average of two 24-h dietary recall interviews. LCD score was calculated by summing the 11 quantiles values of the percentages of energy derived from carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Major depression was defined as a nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire score of 10 or more. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were used to explore the relationship between LCD score, dietary macronutrient intake, and depression. Results LCD score was significantly associated with the risk of depression after adjustment for covariates (odds ratio, 0.98; 95 % confidence interval, 0.97–0.99; p < 0.001). Restricted cubic splines showed that the pattern of this inverse association was nonlinear. Among macronutrients, carbohydrate and protein intake was nonlinearly associated with the risk of depression, whereas fat intake was not related to the risk of depression. A decreased risk of depression was observed when the carbohydrate intake was moderate (45.3 %–59.1 %). The pattern of the association between protein intake and the risk of depression was L-shaped. Conclusions LCD score was inversely associated with the risk of depression in a nonlinear manner in a nationally representative sample of adults from the United States. Furthermore, moderate carbohydrate intake and high protein intake were correlated with a lower risk of depression.

Abstract:Research on the association between level of depression and coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke risk, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality is lacking in large-scale or population-based studies incorporating cardiovascular disease (CVD) endpoints. We aim to assess the relationship between the level of a person's depression and their risk of CHD, stroke, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Utilizing data from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), multicycle cross-sectional design and mortality linkage studies were conducted. The study sample included 30918 participants aged 20–85 years old during the 2005–2018 period. Depression was assessed using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), with scores of 5, 10, 15, and 20 being the cut-off points for mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe depression, respectively. A series of weighted logistic regression analyses and Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to examine the relationship between the level of depression with the risk of CHD, stroke, all-cause, and cardiovascular mortality. Trend analyses were conducted by entering the level of depression as a continuous variable and rerunning the corresponding regression models. Weighted logistic regression models consistently indicated a statistically significant association between the level of depression and increased risk of CHD and stroke, and those linear trend tests were statistically significant (P for trend < 0.001). Furthermore, weighted Cox regression analyses consistently indicated that participants who had a more severe degree of depression were at a higher risk of all-cause death, and trend analyses suggested similar results (P for trend < 0.001). Another weighted Cox regression analysis also consistently indicated that except for severe depression, the hazard of cardiovascular death was increased with each additional level increase of depression. Our study confirmed that the level of depression was strongly associated with CHD, stroke, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, even after accounting for other factors that could impact risk, including variables of age, gender, ethnicity, income, education, body mass index (BMI), marital, and smoking status.

Abstract:Background: Remnant cholesterol (RC) has received increasing attention due to its association with a variety of diseases. However, comprehensive population-based studies elucidating the relationship between RC and major depressive disorder (MDD) are limited. The current study aimed to determine the association between RC and MDD in US adults. Methods: Cross-sectional data of US adults with complete RC and depression information were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. MDD was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and spline smoothing plot method were conducted to explore the relationship between RC and depression. The cut-off point was calculated using recursive partitioning analysis when segmenting effects emerged. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), calibration curve, Hosmer-Lemeshow test, the decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve (CIC) were employed to evaluate the performance of RC in identifying MDD. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed to explore whether the association was stable in different populations. Results: A total of 9,173 participants were enrolled and participants in the higher RC quartile tended to have a higher PHQ-9 score and prevalence of MDD. In the fully adjusted model, a positive association between RC and PHQ-9 score and MDD was both observed (β=0.54, 95% CI 0.26~0.82; OR=1.43, 95% CI 1.15~1.78). Participants in the highest RC quartile had a 0.42-unit higher PHQ-9 score (β=0.42, 95% CI 0.15~0.69) and a significantly 32% higher risk of MDD than those in the lowest RC quartile (OR=1.32, 95% CI 1.05~1.66). Spline smoothing plot analysis further confirmed the positive and non-linear association between RC and PHQ-9 and MDD. ROC analysis (AUC=0.762), the Hosmer-Lemeshow test ( χ 2 = 6.258, P =0.618), and calibration curve all indicated a high performance and goodness-of-fit of the multivariate model. DCA and CIC analysis similarly demonstrated a positive overall net benefit and clinical impact for the model. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests suggested that the relationship between RC and depression remained stable across subgroups and was unaffected by other factors other than diabetes, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. Conclusion: An elevated RC is associated with a higher risk of prevalent MDD among US adults, especially in those with diabetes, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. The present results suggested that the management of RC levels and comorbidities may contribute to alleviating the occurrence of MDD.

Abstract:Growing evidence suggests that relative carbohydrate intake affects depression; however, the association between carbohydrates and depression remains controversial. To test this, we performed a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using genetic variants associated with relative carbohydrate intake ( N = 268,922) and major depressive disorder ( N = 143,265) from the largest available genome-wide association studies. MR evidence suggested a causal relationship between higher relative carbohydrate intake and lower depression risk (odds ratio, 0.42 for depression per one-standard-deviation increment in relative carbohydrate intake; 95% confidence interval, 0.28 to 0.62; P = 1.49 × 10 −5 ). Multivariable MR indicated that the protective effect of relative carbohydrate intake on depression persisted after conditioning on other diet compositions. The mediation analysis via two-step MR showed that this effect was partly mediated by body mass index, with a mediated proportion of 15.4% (95% confidence interval, 6.7% to 24.1%). These findings may inform prevention strategies and interventions directed towards relative carbohydrate intake and depression.

Non-linear association between composite dietary antioxidant index and depression

Abstract:Background Growing evidence has shown that the antioxidant diet is a protective factor against depression. However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), an important measure of antioxidant diet, and depression has received little attention. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between CDAI and depression through a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. Methods The association between CDAI and depression was investigated using a weighted multiple logistic regression model with subgroup analysis. Non-linear correlations were explored using fitted smoothing curves. And we used a recursive method to figure out the turning point and build a weighted two-piece linear regression model. Results In the multivariate logistic regression model with full adjustment for confounding variables, the ORs (95% CI) for the association between CDAI and depression were 0.83 (0.78, 0.88). Moreover, a non-linear association was found, with 0.16 being the inflection point. Before the inflection point, each unit increase in CDAI was associated with a 30% decrease in the risk of depression. After the inflection point, the risk of depression was found to be reduced by 11% for each unit increase. None of the interactions in all subgroup analyses were statistically significant. Conclusions Our study highlighted a negative non-linear association between CDAI and depression in a nationally representative sample of US adults. Further clinical and basic research is needed to explore their association better.

The value of the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in predicting depression and its cardiovascular disease mortality: a population-based observational study

Abstract:Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression have a bidirectional association, with inflammation and metabolic factors being common important triggers for both conditions. However, as a novel inflammatory and metabolic marker, platelet-to-HDL-C ratio (PHR) has not been established in relation to depression and cardiovascular disease. Materials and methods: Participants aged 20 years and older were included in the 2005-2018 NHANES database. PHR was calculated as the ratio of platelet count (1000 cells/μL) to HDL-C (mmol/L). The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to diagnose depression, with a cutoff value of 10. Weighted logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were employed to examine the association between PHR and depression-related features. Additionally, weighted COX regression and RCS were used to analyze the association of PHR with CVD mortality in patients with depression. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess whether PHR had an advantage over HDL-C in predicting depression. Finally, the mediating role of PHR in the latest cardiovascular health indicator Life's Essential 8 and depression was explored. Results: A total of 26,970 eligible participants were included, including 2,308 individuals with depression, representing approximately 160 million U.S. adults when weighted. After full adjustment, we estimated that the odds ratio (OR) of depression associated with a per standard deviation (SD) increase in PHR was 1.06 (95% CI: 1.01-1.12, P=0.03). The restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis indicated a linear association (Nonlinear P=0.113). When PHR was divided into four groups based on quartiles and included in the model after full adjustment for depression risk factors, participants in quartile 2, quartile 3, and quartile 4 of PHR showed a trend of increasing risk of depression compared to the lowest quartile group (P trend=0.01). In addition, weighted COX regression and RCS revealed that a per SD increase in PHR was associated with a higher risk of CVD mortality among patients with depression (HR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.05-1.81, P=0.02, Nonlinear P=0.400). Subgroup analyses showed that current alcohol consumption enhanced the association between PHR and depression (P for interaction=0.017). Furthermore, the areas under the ROC curves (AUC) were 0.556 (95% CI, 0.544-0.568; P < 0.001) for PHR and 0.536 (95% CI, 0.524-0.549; P < 0.001) for HDL-C (PDeLong = 0.025). Finally, mediation analysis indicated that PHR was an intermediate mechanism between LE8 and depression (mediation proportion=5.02%, P=0.02). Conclusion: In U.S. adults, an increase in PHR linearly increases the risk of depression and CVD mortality among individuals with depression. Additionally, PHR has a better predictive advantage for depression compared to HDL-C. Furthermore, PHR significantly mediates the association between LE8 scores and depression.

Abstract:Abstract Background The prevalence of depression is increasing in the elderly population, and growing evidence suggests that malnutrition impacts mental health. Despites, research on the factors that predict depression is limited. Methods We included 2946 elderly individuals from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning the years 2011 through 2014. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the PHQ-9 scale. Multinomial logistic regression was performed to evaluate the independent association between Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and depression prevalence and scores. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore potential factors influencing the negative correlation between GNRI and depression. Restricted cubic spline graph was employed to examine the presence of a non-linear relationship between GNRI and depression. Results The depression group had a significantly lower GNRI than the non-depression group, and multivariate logistic regression showed that GNRI was a significant predictor of depression ( P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that certain demographic characteristics were associated with a lower incidence of depression in individuals affected by GNRIs. These characteristics included being female ( P < 0.0001), non-Hispanic black ( P = 0.0003), having a moderate BMI ( P = 0.0005), having a college or associates (AA) degree ( P = 0.0003), being married ( P = 0.0001), having a PIR between 1.50 and 3.49 ( P = 0.0002), being a former smoker ( P = 0.0002), and having no history of cardiovascular disease ( P < 0.0001), hypertension ( P < 0.0001), and diabetes ( P = 0.0027). Additionally, a non-linear negative correlation (non-linear P < 0.01) was found between GNRI and depression prevalence, with a threshold identified at GNRI = 104.17814. Conclusion The GNRI demonstrates efficacy as a reliable indicator for forecasting depression in the elderly population. It exhibits a negative nonlinear correlation with the prevalence of depression among geriatric individuals.

Relationship Between Dietary Pattern and Depressive Symptoms: an International Multicohort Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Several previous studies have shown that dietary patterns are associated with the incidence of depressive symptoms. However, the results have been inconsistent. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the association between dietary patterns and the risk of depressive symptoms in two large cohort studies.METHODS:The Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health (TCLSIH) cohort study included a total of 7,094 participants living in Tianjin, China from 2013 to 2019, and the UK Biobank cohort study includes 96,810 participants who were recruited from 22 assessment centers across the UK taken between 2006 and 2010. All participants were free of a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and depressive symptoms at baseline. Dietary patterns at baseline were identified with factor analysis based on responses to a validated food frequency questionnaire in TCLSIH or Oxford WebQ in UK Biobank. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Chinese version of the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) in TCLSIH or hospital inpatient records in UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the association between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms.RESULTS:A total of 989, and 1,303 participants developed depressive symptoms during 17,410 and 709,931 person-years of follow-up. After adjusting for several potential confounders, the multivariable HRs (95% CIs) of the depressive symptoms were 0.71 (0.57, 0.88) for traditional Chinese dietary pattern, 1.29 (1.07, 1.55) for processed animal offal included animal food dietary pattern, and 1.22 (1.02, 1.46) for sugar rich dietary pattern in TCLSIH (all Q4 vs Q1). In the UK Biobank, the HRs (95% CIs) of depressive symptoms were 1.39 (1.16, 1.68) for processed food dietary pattern (Q4 vs Q1), 0.90 (0.77, 1.00) for healthy dietary pattern (Q3 vs Q1), and 0.89 (0.75, 1.05) for meat dietary pattern (Q4 vs Q1) in the final adjusted model.CONCLUSION:Dietary patterns rich in processed foods were associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms, and following a traditional Chinese dietary pattern or healthy dietary pattern was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms, whereas meat dietary pattern was not associated.
Association of macronutrient consumption quality, food source and timing with depression among US adults: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background Growing evidence suggests that meal timing may influence dietary choices and mental health. Thus, this study examined the association between macronutrient consumption quality, food source, meal timing, and depression prevalence in Americans. Methods 23,313 National Health and Nutrition Survey participants from 2007 to 2016 were included in this cross-sectional study. Macronutrient intake was calculated for all day, dinner, and breakfast and subtypes into 4 classes. Based on the Patient Health Questionnaire, depression was defined as a 9-item score ≥ 10 on the PHQ-9. The correlation between macronutrients and depression prevalence was estimated with multivariable logistic regression models and isocaloric substitution effects. Results Low-quality carbohydrates (OR = 1.54, 95 % CI: 1.11, 2.12) were positively linked to depression compared with the lowest quartile, after adjusting for age and other covariates. In contrast, total high-quality carbohydrate (OR = 0.52, 95 % CI: 0.40, 0.66), total animal protein (OR = 0.60, 95 % CI: 0.45, 0.80), and total vegetable protein (OR = 0.61, 95 % CI: 0.43, 0.85) were negatively associated with depression was negatively associated. Replacing low-quality carbohydrates with high-quality carbohydrates throughout the day reduced the risk of depression by approximately 15 %. Limitations Cross-sectional data. Conclusion All in all, diet plays a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of depression. Especially in terms of macronutrient intake, high-quality, moderate intake can reduce the risk of depression. However, different subtypes of macronutrient consumption may have different effects on depression, so it becomes crucial to carefully consider the selection and combination of macronutrients.

Abstract:Background and aim Depression is a common and complex psychiatric disorder, and lipid metabolism plays an important role in the development of psychiatric disorders such as depression. Cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel index that synthesizes two quantitative indicators of blood lipids (triglyceride(TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)) and human obesity-related parameters (waist height ratio (WHtR)). This study used NHANES data to explore the correlation between CMI and the incidence of depression. Methods and results Based on the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2018, multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and smooth curve fitting were used to study the relationship between CMI and depression. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were used to investigate whether the association was stable in different populations. CMI was positively associated with depression in 7229 participants aged >20 years. In the fully adjusted model, each unit increase in CMI was associated with 36 % higher likelihood of depression symptoms [1.36(1.16,1.59)]. Participants in the highest quartile of CMI had a 62 % higher risk of depression than participants in the lowest quartile [1.62(1.17,2.23)]. This positive correlation was more pronounced in those with hypertension. Conclusions CMI was associated with a higher PHQ-9 score and an increased likelihood of depression among US adults. Further large-scale prospective studies are still need to analyze the role of CMI in depression.
