Abstract:Educational neuroscience is a new research field, of which results contribute to raising the percentage of effectiveness and efficiency of the educational process through the use of neuroscience to explain various educational phenomena.Effective reading techniques were developed and improved, while the knowledge management received by the individual was developed and improved, in addition to explaining the occurrence of learning during interactive activities (games or simulations) and emphasizing the ability of these activities to support the healthy growth of children and the development of their personalities. Consequently, research and studies in this field have opened new opportunities to improve learning inputs and enhance their effectiveness and outputs.The complexity and uncertainty surrounding the relationship between learning and brain function warrant attention. Although neuroscience underpins our understanding of this area, its findings cannot yet be directly applied to the educational system, partly because of the arduous task of translation. Despite this, by focusing on a specific group of learners and cautiously adapting neuroscience research, the hurdles can be cleared, as we slowly unravel its enigmas.Curriculum design can be greatly improved through the use of neuroscience education. This involves tailoring effective learning strategies to accommodate learners unique qualities. Additionally, educational neuroscience research has been integrated into teaching techniques to promote collaboration and social interaction among learners, while maintaining a state of optimal flow in learning materials. Utilizing educational neuroscience benefits, such as enhanced brain development, improved learning, and evidence-based algorithms for instructional strategies, can be achieved. Nevertheless, it is important to address the varied needs of learners and approach the application of educational neuroscience carefully.Research in educational neuroscience is a topic of interest in education. This research has the potential to change learning strategies and curriculum design but also comes with its unique challenges. Through the collected data, this study aimed to identify the benefits of educational neuroscience in improving education and present the limitations and possible solutions for implementing it successfully. This research seeks to positively revolutionize education by gaining insight into effective learning strategies.

Abstract:Reconstitution experiments have permitted the incorporation of Na+ channels of crude nerve plasma membrane preparations into soybean 1iposomes.l The freeze-thaw-sonication procedure was used for reconstitution.? The amount of membrane protein incorporated was found to depend linearly on the amount of membrane protein added to the soybean liposomes for reconstitution.s Measurements of 22Na+ flux into the reconstituted vesicles treated with neurotoxins, which specifically modify the voltage-sensitive Na+ channels in viv0,~-9 were used to demonstrate the incorporation of Na+ channels. Veratridine or grayanotoxin I was used to increase the Na+ influx, and tetrodotoxin was used to specifically abolish the increment of the flux through the Na+ channels. The tetrodotoxin-sensitive Na+ flux is equated to the Na+ channel activity of the reconstituted vesicles. These reconstitution experiments have given direct evidence about the protein nature of the Na+ channel: (1) nerve membrane protein had to be incorporated to obtain functioning vesicles; (2) the Na+ channel activity of the vesicles was a linear function of the amount of membrane protein incorporated;3 and (3) heating of the membrane preparations at 50°C €or 10 min previous to reconstitution yielded vesicles that did not respond to the neurotoxins. The first part of this work deals with experiments carried out to further characterize the pharmacological properties and the ionic selectivity of the Na+ channels of crude nerve membrane preparations incorporated into soybean liposomes. The second part deals with the characterization of the Na+ channels present in particles obtained from the nerve membrane by treatment with detergents and subsequent separation by differential centrifugation. The third and final part deals with the drug response of the Na+ channels present in the membrane particles heated at 30" to 40" C for 10 min previous to reconstitution. The ammonium sulfate fractionation of these heated particles revealed some correspondence between Na+ channel activity and peptide composition of the fractions. A large peptide, with molecular weight similar to the one determined by Agnew et a1.10 for the tetrodotoxin-binding component of the voltagesensitive Naf channel of Electrophorus electricus, was found to be one of the peptides that correlate with the Na+ channel activity.
Effects of Explaining a Science Lesson to Others or to Oneself: A Cognitive Neuroscience Approach

Abstract:Background: Two generative learning activities aimed at improving students' learning are explaining learning materials to oneself or to others. Although these techniques have been shown to improve learning outcomes, there is less evidence concerning the role of brain activity during learning. Aims: This study explored the effects of these techniques on brain activation patterns (as measured by fNIRS) and learning outcomes (as measured by retention and transfer tests). Sample and methods: Ninety-nine college students studied a text -based multimedia lesson about the Doppler Effect and then either explained the material to a real person (explain -to -others group, n = 33), explained the material to themselves (explain -to -oneself group, n = 34), or restudied the text (restudy group, n = 32). Students' brain activity during learning was recorded using fNIRS techniques and all students completed retention and transfer posttests and mental effort, presence, and anxiety surveys. Results: Both the explain -to -others group and the explain -to -oneself group obtained higher scores on retention, mental effort, and state anxiety than the restudy group. The explain -to -others and explain -to -oneself groups also displayed greater activation of brain networks associated with attention, working memory, and metacognitive processing (i.e., the bilateral TPJ and the right OFC). The explain -to -others group outperformed the restudy group on transfer test, social presence ratings, and explanation quality. The explain -to -others group also displayed greater activation in brain networks associated with social processing (the left dlPFC and the left TPJ) compared to the explain -to -oneself group. Conclusions: This study extended generative learning theory and pointed out the advantage of learning -byteaching based on neuroscience evidence.
Interpersonal Neural Synchronization Predicting Learning Outcomes From Teaching-Learning Interaction: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:In school education, teaching-learning interaction is deemed as a core process in the classroom. The fundamental neural basis underlying teaching-learning interaction is proposed to be essential for tuning learning outcomes. However, the neural basis of this process as well as the relationship between the neural dynamics and the learning outcomes are largely unclear. With non-invasive technologies such as fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy), hyperscanning techniques have been developed since the last decade and been applied to the field of educational neuroscience for simultaneous multi-brain scanning. Hyperscanning studies suggest that the interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during teaching-learning interaction might be an ideal neural biomarker for predicting learning outcomes. To systematically evaluate such a relationship, this meta-analysis ran on a random-effects model on 16 studies with 23 independent samples (effect sizes). Further moderator analyses were also performed to examine the potential influences of the style, mode, content, and the assessment method of learning outcomes. The random-effects modeling results confirmed a robust positive correlation between INS and learning outcomes. Subsequent analyses revealed that such relationship was mainly affected by both interaction style and mode. Therefore, the present meta-analysis provided a confirmatory neurocognitive foundation for teaching-learning interaction, as well as its relation to the learning outcomes, consolidated future learning and teaching studies in various disciplines including second language education with a firm methodological reference.

On Neuroeducation: Why and How to Improve Neuroscientific Literacy in Educational Professionals

Abstract:New findings from the neurosciences receive much interest for use in the applied field of education. For the past 15 years, neuroeducation and the application of neuroscience knowledge were seen to have promise, but there is presently some lack of progress. The present paper states that this is due to several factors. Neuromyths are still prevalent, and there is a confusion of tongues between the many neurodisciplines and the domains of behavioral and educational sciences. Second, a focus upon cognitive neuroimaging research has yielded findings that are scientifically relevant, but cannot be used for direct application in the classroom. A third factor pertains to the emphasis which has been on didactics and teaching, whereas the promise of neuroeducation for the teacher may lie more on pedagogical inspiration and support. This article states that the most important knowledge and insights have to do with the notion of brain plasticity; the vision that development is driven by an interaction between a person's biology and the social system. This helps individuals to select and process information, and to adapt to the personal environment. The paper describes how brain maturation and neuropsychological development extend through the important period of adolescence and emergent adulthood. Over this long period, there is a major development of the Executive Functions (EFs) that are essential for both cognitive learning, social behavior and emotional processing and, eventually, personal growth. The paper describes the basic neuroscience knowledge and insights - or "neuroscientific literacy" - that the educational professional should have to understand and appreciate the above-described themes. The authors formulate a proposal for four themes of neuroscience content "that every teacher should know." These four themes are based on the Neuroscience Core Concepts formulated by the Society for Neuroscience. The authors emphasize that integrating neuroscientific knowledge and insights in the field of education should not be a one-way street; attempts directed at improving neuroscientific literacy are a transdisciplinary undertaking. Teacher trainers, experts from the neuroscience fields but also behavioral scientists from applied fields (notable applied neuropsychologists) should all contribute to for the educational innovations needed.

Abstract:Objectives: In education, neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research field. It seeks to improve educational practice by applying brain research findings. Additional findings from the scientific fields of education, psychology, and neurophysiology aim to enhance the learning process and improve educational practices. The application of neuroscience to education involves neuroscientific and psychological knowledge. Methods/Analysis: In this systematic literature review, the final studies included in the analysis table are decided by searching databases according to predefined inclusion criteria. The PRISMA approach was utilized to study the relationship between neuroscience and the educational process and to optimize the educational process based on the relevant data. Findings: The review's findings emphasize the significance of integrating neuroscience into educational praxis and challenges and raise ethical concerns regarding its implementation in educational contexts. Novelty /Improvement: The discipline of educational neuroscience is associated with education, research, and the cognitive neuroscience of learning. Neuroscience can serve as the basis for education in a similar direction that biology serves as the basis for medicine, meaning that each field retains its innovation but cannot contravene the rules of the other. Teaching the Science in Neuroscience to Protect From Neuromyths: From Courses to Fieldwork

Abstract:In recent decades, Cognitive Neuroscience has evolved from a rather arcane field trying to understand how the brain supports mental activities, to one that contributes to public policies. In this article, we focus on the contributions from Cognitive Neuroscience to Education. This line of research has produced a great deal of information that can potentially help in the transformation of Education, promoting interventions that help in several domains including literacy and math learning, social skills and science. The growth of the Neurosciences has also created a public demand for knowledge and a market for neuro-products to fulfill these demands, through books, booklets, courses, apps and websites. These products are not always based on scientific findings and coupled to the complexities of the scientific theories and evidence, have led to the propagation of misconceptions and the perpetuation of neuromyths. This is particularly harmful for educators because these misconceptions might make them abandon useful practices in favor of others not sustained by evidence. In order to bridge the gap between Education and Neuroscience, we have been conducting, since 2013, a set of activities that put educators and scientists to work together in research projects. The participation goes from discussing the research results of our projects to being part and deciding aspects of the field interventions. Another strategy consists of a course centered around the applications of Neuroscience to Education and their empirical and theoretical bases. These two strategies have to be compared to popularization efforts that just present Neuroscientific results. We show that the more the educators are involved in the discussion of the methodological bases of Neuroscientific knowledge, be it in the course or as part of a stay, the better they manage the underlying concepts. We argue that this is due to the understanding of scientific principles, which leads to a more profound comprehension of what the evidence can and cannot support, thus shielding teachers from the false allure of some commercial neuro-products. We discuss the three approaches and present our efforts to determine whether they lead to a strong understanding of the conceptual and empirical base of Neuroscience.

Abstract:Active learning is an important aspect of creating a fun and achieving learning outcomes, but it is quite difficult to create in science subjects if the approach used by teachers is less appropriate. This study is an action research conducted to improve active learning among primary school students using Whole Brain Teaching Strategies (WBTS) in Science subjects. The only three types of WBT strategies used are Class-Yes, Mirror-Words and Teach-Okay. This action research was conducted among 42 students of Year 4 at a primary school in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Data were collected through 2 methods, which are video recording and interviews with students and Science teacher. The results of the study found that Whole Brain Teaching Strategies (WBTS) has been able to increase students' active learning during the learning process as this strategy can develop cognitive remembering. Moreover, students understand what is taught by teachers in learning process through WBTS where it affects information retention in student's long term memory. Therefore, students show positive emotional development. In addition, it can create a meaningful cooperative learning with positive social interactions between peers when students are positively interdependent in the team. Each group member strives to complete group assignments and help weaker members so that the group success is experienced together thus strengthening intrinsic motivation among students. The use of WBTS has been able to be applied effectively in enhancing a meaningful learning process in the classroom that can give ideas to other teachers to apply in other subjects as well.
Teaching About “Brain and Learning” in High School Biology Classes: Effects on Teachers' Knowledge and Students' Theory of Intelligence

Abstract:This study evaluated a new teaching module about "Brain and Learning" using a controlled design. The module was implemented in high school biology classes and comprised three lessons: (1) brain processes underlying learning; (2) neuropsychological development during adolescence; and (3) lifestyle factors that influence learning performance. Participants were 32 biology teachers who were interested in "Brain and Learning" and 1241 students in grades 8-9. Teachers' knowledge and students' beliefs about learning potential were examined using online questionnaires. Results indicated that before intervention, biology teachers were significantly less familiar with how the brain functions and develops than with its structure and with basic neuroscientific concepts (46 vs. 75% correct answers). After intervention, teachers' knowledge of "Brain and Learning" had significantly increased (64%), and more students believed that intelligence is malleable (incremental theory). This emphasizes the potential value of a short teaching module, both for improving biology teachers' insights into "Brain and Learning," and for changing students' beliefs about intelligence.

Cerebellar astrocytoma: report of 13 cases aged over 20 years and review of the literature.

Abstract:Cerebellar astrocytoma in adulthood is a distinct neoplasm with a variable prognosis. We reviewed retrospectively 13 cases in patients aged 21 years or over, seen between 1976 and 1992. These accounted for 19% of all cases of cerebellar astrocytoma seen during that period. The tumour was located in the midline in six patients and laterally in seven; seven patients were females and six were males. The low grade tumours had an overall favourable course, similar to that seen in cerebellar astrocytoma in childhood, with follow-up ranging from 4 to 10 years. The poorly differentiated form, seen in four of the cases, showed progression or recurrence within 4-24 months, regardless of the extent of removal or post-operative radiation therapy.

Abstract:Constant global advancements and expanding evidence in the neuroscience of learning have provided compelling support for the inclusion of neuroscience as a crucial content priority in initial teacher education. Existing research confirms the efficacy of neurocognitive interventions for atypical and typical school-aged learners in a variety of key subject areas. Despite advances in the neuroscience of learning, the adoption of contemporary approaches and strategies that support and enhance neurocognitive development by education practitioners is yet to be the norm. Incorporating neuroscience education content, research, and practical application into initial teacher education curricula will enhance teacher preparation, leading to evidence-based education.

Abstract:The article proves that in recent years important advances have been made in neurobiology regarding education. With advanced scientific knowledge of cerebral activity in learning, educators have the opportunity to use interesting tools to improve academic performance in higher education when teaching a foreign language. Based on research on brain function, educators have created distance-learning tools useful for teaching a foreign language. While these tools are an important and critical element of the learning process, the emphasis in this study is different, that is, to teach students to become familiar with their own brain function and then to mobilize their metacognitive resources during distance learning. In this regard, teachers have faced many issues of organizing feedback from the study group, transferring learning materials to distance education platforms, monitoring progress and many others, while engaging the metacognitive resources of students. The issue of formation of information and communication and neurocompetence of foreign language teachers has become especially urgent in the pedagogical environment. Due to the lack of relevant skills, teachers had to adapt to the new educational conditions and completely restructure the educational process.

Brain-to-Brain Synchrony and Learning Outcomes Vary by Student–Teacher Dynamics: Evidence from a Real-world Classroom Electroencephalography Study

Abstract:Abstract How does the human brain support real-world learning? We used wireless electroencephalography to collect neurophysiological data from a group of 12 senior high school students and their teacher during regular biology lessons. Six scheduled classes over the course of the semester were organized such that class materials were presented using different teaching styles (videos and lectures), and students completed a multiple-choice quiz after each class to measure their retention of that lesson's content. Both students' brain-to-brain synchrony and their content retention were higher for videos than lectures across the six classes. Brain-to-brain synchrony between the teacher and students varied as a function of student engagement as well as teacher likeability: Students who reported greater social closeness to the teacher showed higher brain-to-brain synchrony with the teacher, but this was only the case for lectures—that is, when the teacher is an integral part of the content presentation. Furthermore, students' retention of the class content correlated with student–teacher closeness, but not with brain-to-brain synchrony. These findings expand on existing social neuroscience research by showing that social factors such as perceived closeness are reflected in brain-to-brain synchrony in real-world group settings and can predict cognitive outcomes such as students' academic performance.

Enhancing Learning Abilities in Students Using a Cognitive Neuroscience Model Based on Brain-Computer Interface Signal Analysis

Abstract:Computational intelligence is used to create artificially intelligent systems with the ability to learn, adapt, and solve problems. Learners’ computational abilities can be improved with the help of Cognitive Neuroscience techniques. Computational intelligence refers to the ability of a learner based on the complex operations of the brain in the four relevant dimensions: Visual (V), Aural (A), Kinematic (K), and Reading/Writing (R/W). Our proposed framework consists of electroencephalogram (EEG) data acquisition, signal extraction, and EEG signal categorization to assess students’ cognitive learning abilities. Our proposed approach uses an EEG device equipped with a microprocessor, a Think Gear (TGAM) EEG sensor, and a PCB of 16 dry electrodes. The EEG device and the remote processing device are connected by Bluetooth. The EEG signal provides the students with neurofeedback on their cognitive learning capability. The feedback obtained through the learning process will be endowing to improvise computational intelligence. The statistical derivative, Pearson Co-efficient, is used to find the correlation among the derived attributes. The attributes considered are the learner’s gender, stream, age, and geographical region. The results obtained highlight that gender, stream, and age have no correlation with the detectable learning index, and the most accurate learners are kinesthetic ones. Bi-modal learners, who can maintain focus while reading and using their kinematic abilities, had the second highest learning capacity.

Abstract:Background The present special issue on mind, brain and education (educational neuroscience) contains four papers that employ a neuroscience‐informed approach to educational phenomena, including dyslexia, academic self‐concepts, bullying and the effect of mindset on learning. Aim This commentary positions the papers with respect to the goals and methods of educational neuroscience, placing them on a continuum of approaches from basic research to applied intervention. Procedure We argue that a focus on the brain matters for teachers because it increases understanding of how learning works and the factors that influence learning outcomes and student well‐being without being reductionist. Constraints on learning that arise from biology sometimes seem arbitrary outside a neuroscience framework (several examples are provided). A neuroscience perspective encourages a more holistic and developmental view of learning than a narrow cognitive (memory) oriented approach. Because educational neuroscience is an inherently translational field that relies on dialogues between researchers and practitioners, we argue it is important to understand how teachers view the field and how insights from the science of learning might usefully feed into their practice. We then assess the insights, strengths and limitations of the four papers, as well as the potential that their respective lines of work offer.

Abstract:Background and Aims Educational neuroscience has emerged as an interdisciplinary field aimed at elucidating the neurobiological underpinnings of learning and educational outcomes. By synthesizing findings from diverse research endeavours, this Editorial aims to delineate the intricate interplay between neural processes and educational experiences, shedding light on the factors that shape cognitive development and learning trajectories in children. Results This Editorial highlights significant advancements, spanning investigations into neural mechanisms, cognitive development and educational interventions on the basis of four exemplary topics and their effects on academic learning and achievement: student's academic self‐concept, (cyber‐)bullying, reading skills/dyslexia and a growth mindset intervention. Summaries of the four empirical contributions in this special issue are presented and discussed in relation to how they provide insight into the dynamic interplay between neural mechanisms and environmental influences, underscoring the role of early experiences in sculpting brain development and shaping educational outcomes. Furthermore, the integration of neuroscientific techniques (e.g., fMRI, eye‐tracking) with educational research methodologies has provided novel insights into the neural correlates of learning processes, executive functions and socio‐emotional development during childhood. Conclusions In conclusion, the pivotal role of Educational Neuroscience in bridging the gap between neuroscience and education is highlighted. By elucidating the neurobiological foundations of learning, this interdisciplinary field offers valuable insights for informing evidence‐based educational practices and interventions tailored to individual learning profiles. Abstract:The article is devoted to the development of the mental activity of primary school students through the development of neurodidactic content in the primary education system. Based on the study of scientific literature, an analysis of the current state of neuro pedagogy, and neurodidactics was made, and the experience of using neurodidactic content in the world and domestic educational programs and educational process was considered. Using neuro didactic content such as neuro-exercises, and neuro-tasks in the educational process of the primary school, the relevance of the problem of developing the mental activity of primary school students was determined. The results of the survey conducted with primary school teachers working in different regions of the republic showed that teachers’ attitudes and attitudes towards neurodidactics are positive. According to them, neurodidactic content and brain-based teaching strategies and methods create an opportunity to increase the development and activity of students’ mental activity. Abstract:This brief paper summarizes a mixed method review of over 500 neuroscientific reports investigating the proposition that general intelligence (g or IQ) and multiple intelligences (MI) can be integrated based on common and unique neural systems. Extrapolated from this interpretation are five principles that inform teaching and curriculum so that education can be strengths-based and personalized to promote academic achievement. This framework is proposed as a comprehensive model for a system of educational cognitive neuroscience that will serve the fields of neuroscience as well as educators. Five key principles identified are culture matters, every brain is unique-activate strengths, know thyself, embodied cognition/emotional rudder, and make it mean something.

Abstract:Neuroscience uses cellular and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, human behavior and cognition, and other disciplines to map the brain at a mechanistic level. Mapping all the cell-to-cell communication networks — the brain circuits that process all thoughts, emotions, and behaviors — is one of the most significant challenges of contemporary neuroscience. Neuroplasticity, the brain's capacity to form new neural connections and circuits, is the starting point and foundation of any learning process. Neuroscience can serve as a foundation for education in the same way that biology serves as a foundation for medicine, meaning that each field retains its creativity but cannot violate the laws of the other. This work examines the relationship between neuroscience and educational practice, focusing on how teachers and school psychologists can use potential research findings from these fields to bridge the gap between them.
