Abstract:Education programs have been central to reestablishing social norms, rebuilding public educational institutions, and addressing public attitudes toward mental illness in Liberia following a protracted civil war and the Ebola epidemic. The aim of this study was to determine if a program combining an understanding of neuroscience with mental health literacy content could increase teachers’ awareness of students’ mental health issues and produce changes in teacher attitudes and classroom practices. A tiered Training-of-Trainers approach was employed. The first workshop trained 24 Liberian secondary science teachers in the neurobiology of learning, memory, emotions, stress and adolescent brain development. A Leadership Team formed from eight of the Tier I participants then adapted the curriculum, added in more mental health literacy content and led four Tier II workshops and four follow-up Refresher sessions. Participants completed a neuroscience knowledge test and surveys assessing stigma, general perceptions of people with mental illness, and burnout. A subset of Tier II teachers participated in a structured interview at the Refresher time point. Teachers in both tiers acquired basic neuroscience knowledge. Tier I, but not Tier II teachers significantly improved their surveyed attitudes toward people with mental illness. No changes were found in overall teacher burnout. Despite these survey results, the interviewed Tier II teachers self-reported behavioral changes in how they approached their teaching and students in their classrooms. Interviewees described how they now understood social and emotional challenges students might be experiencing and recognized abnormal behaviors as having a biopsychosocial basis. Teachers reported reduced use of verbal and corporal punishment and increased positive rewards systems, such as social and emotional support for students through building relationships. Refresher discussions concurred with the interviewees. In contrast to previous teacher mental health literacy programs which did not bring about a change in helping behaviors, this pilot program may have been successful in changing teacher knowledge and self-reported behaviors, improving teacher–student relationships and decreasing harsh discipline. The combination of basic neuroscience concepts with training on how to recognize mental health issues and refer students should be investigated further as a strategy to promote teacher mental health literacy.

Cerebellar astrocytoma: report of 13 cases aged over 20 years and review of the literature.

Abstract:Cerebellar astrocytoma in adulthood is a distinct neoplasm with a variable prognosis. We reviewed retrospectively 13 cases in patients aged 21 years or over, seen between 1976 and 1992. These accounted for 19% of all cases of cerebellar astrocytoma seen during that period. The tumour was located in the midline in six patients and laterally in seven; seven patients were females and six were males. The low grade tumours had an overall favourable course, similar to that seen in cerebellar astrocytoma in childhood, with follow-up ranging from 4 to 10 years. The poorly differentiated form, seen in four of the cases, showed progression or recurrence within 4-24 months, regardless of the extent of removal or post-operative radiation therapy.
On Neuroeducation: Why and How to Improve Neuroscientific Literacy in Educational Professionals

Abstract:New findings from the neurosciences receive much interest for use in the applied field of education. For the past 15 years, neuroeducation and the application of neuroscience knowledge were seen to have promise, but there is presently some lack of progress. The present paper states that this is due to several factors. Neuromyths are still prevalent, and there is a confusion of tongues between the many neurodisciplines and the domains of behavioral and educational sciences. Second, a focus upon cognitive neuroimaging research has yielded findings that are scientifically relevant, but cannot be used for direct application in the classroom. A third factor pertains to the emphasis which has been on didactics and teaching, whereas the promise of neuroeducation for the teacher may lie more on pedagogical inspiration and support. This article states that the most important knowledge and insights have to do with the notion of brain plasticity; the vision that development is driven by an interaction between a person's biology and the social system. This helps individuals to select and process information, and to adapt to the personal environment. The paper describes how brain maturation and neuropsychological development extend through the important period of adolescence and emergent adulthood. Over this long period, there is a major development of the Executive Functions (EFs) that are essential for both cognitive learning, social behavior and emotional processing and, eventually, personal growth. The paper describes the basic neuroscience knowledge and insights - or "neuroscientific literacy" - that the educational professional should have to understand and appreciate the above-described themes. The authors formulate a proposal for four themes of neuroscience content "that every teacher should know." These four themes are based on the Neuroscience Core Concepts formulated by the Society for Neuroscience. The authors emphasize that integrating neuroscientific knowledge and insights in the field of education should not be a one-way street; attempts directed at improving neuroscientific literacy are a transdisciplinary undertaking. Teacher trainers, experts from the neuroscience fields but also behavioral scientists from applied fields (notable applied neuropsychologists) should all contribute to for the educational innovations needed.
Promoting Motivation and Well-Being at School: the effect of a teacher training combining a self-determination theory-based intervention and positive psychology interventions

Abstract:Promoting students' well-being and motivation at school is of critical importance to address developmental declines in student motivation and rising prevalence of adolescents’ mental health issues. The present study examined the effects of a multicomponent professional development training course for teachers combining self-determination theory-based intervention and positive psychology intervention on both teachers’ and students’ outcomes. The efficacy of the intervention was assessed using a two-armed parallel cluster randomized controlled trial involving 45 secondary school teachers and their 819 students. Teachers in the intervention condition followed a two-days training on students' motivation and well-being and on ways of adopting facilitating behaviors, while those in the control condition did not benefit from the training. At both pre- and post-intervention, as well as at follow-up (i.e., 2 months post-intervention), teachers and students completed self-report questionnaires measuring work/school satisfaction, motivation for work/school, perceived motivating style, work engagement for teachers and emotional regulation skills for students. Linear mixed models revealed that the intervention is effective both at the teacher level, leading to an improvement in motivating style, motivation, work engagement and job satisfaction, and at the student level, leading to improvements in students’ perceived teacher’s autonomy supportive motivating style, school motivation, and school satisfaction. The present findings indicate that a short training course combining these two approaches can be effective both for promoting teachers’ and students’ motivation and satisfaction, and thus provides a useful cost-effcetive intervention.

Abstract:Constant global advancements and expanding evidence in the neuroscience of learning have provided compelling support for the inclusion of neuroscience as a crucial content priority in initial teacher education. Existing research confirms the efficacy of neurocognitive interventions for atypical and typical school-aged learners in a variety of key subject areas. Despite advances in the neuroscience of learning, the adoption of contemporary approaches and strategies that support and enhance neurocognitive development by education practitioners is yet to be the norm. Incorporating neuroscience education content, research, and practical application into initial teacher education curricula will enhance teacher preparation, leading to evidence-based education.
Experimental Impacts of the “Quality Preschool for Ghana” Interventions on Teacher Professional Well-being, Classroom Quality, and Children’s School Readiness

Abstract:We assessed the impacts of a teacher professional development program for public and private kindergartens in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. We examined impacts on teacher professional well-being, classroom quality, and children’s readiness during one school year. This cluster-randomized trial included 240 schools (teachers N = 444; children N = 3,345, Mage = 5.2) randomly assigned to one of three conditions: teacher training (TT), teacher training plus parental-awareness meetings (TTPA), and controls. The programs incorporated workshops and in-classroom coaching for teachers and video-based discussion groups for parents. Moderate impacts were found on some dimensions of professional well-being (reduced burnout in the TT and TTPA conditions, reduced turnover in the TT condition), classroom quality (increased emotional support/behavior management in the TT and TTPA conditions, support for student expression in the TT condition), and small impacts on multiple domains of children’s school readiness (in the TT condition). The parental-awareness meetings had counteracting effects on child school readiness outcomes. Implications for policy and practice are discussed for Ghana and for early childhood education in low- and middle-income countries.

Social Emotional Learning for Teachers (SELF-T): A Short-term, Online Intervention to Increase Early Childhood Educators’ Resilience

Abstract:Early childhood teachers' social emotional well-being is important for their quality of life, and is associated with their classroom practices, their relationships with children, and with child functioning. This study examines the impact of an intervention; a brief, online course to support teachers' use of stress-management and resiliency practices. Sixty-three, center-based, early childhood teachers completed pre- and post-surveys to assess their knowledge of stress and stress reduction, use of prevention strategies, use of emotion regulation strategies, self-reported stress, and their social and emotional responsiveness to children. Participants also provided feedback about the course design, content, and applicability. Research Findings: After the intervention, teachers demonstrated greater knowledge of stress, stress-reduction and use of prevention strategies, and greater use of reappraisal emotion regulation. Teachers indicated the course was useful, positively affected their work with children, and demonstrated positive changes in their self-reported responsiveness to children. However, after the intervention, they also reported higher levels of personal stress and negative reactions to children's emotions. Practice or Policy: This research provides some evidence that a low-dose intervention delivered online can affect teachers' knowledge and use of resiliency practices. Differences in effects based on teachers' social identities and experiences, and updates to the original course content, are discussed.

Abstract:The attention to the laws of the brain and the mechanism of learning in the smart education era becomes the starting point for the convergence and development of education and neuroscience, which also inspired educational neuroscience (EN) affecting the teacher’s development. Although teachers always have a general curiosity about EN and its applications, the limited knowledge hinders their general practice, neuromyths begin to emerge, and there is no evidence to directly show the connection between EN and teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) knowledge. Based on an EN teacher training program for 216 teachers, this study verifies that EN training programs can promote teachers’ understanding of EN-related knowledge, and EN is also correlated to teachers’ TPACK. However, the EN training program does not promote high well-being and satisfaction. The research also analyzes the process of teachers’ EN knowledge dissemination based on interviews, and the research conclusion can further reveal the necessity of EN training for teachers in the future.

Abstract:Educational neuroscience is a new research field, of which results contribute to raising the percentage of effectiveness and efficiency of the educational process through the use of neuroscience to explain various educational phenomena.Effective reading techniques were developed and improved, while the knowledge management received by the individual was developed and improved, in addition to explaining the occurrence of learning during interactive activities (games or simulations) and emphasizing the ability of these activities to support the healthy growth of children and the development of their personalities. Consequently, research and studies in this field have opened new opportunities to improve learning inputs and enhance their effectiveness and outputs.The complexity and uncertainty surrounding the relationship between learning and brain function warrant attention. Although neuroscience underpins our understanding of this area, its findings cannot yet be directly applied to the educational system, partly because of the arduous task of translation. Despite this, by focusing on a specific group of learners and cautiously adapting neuroscience research, the hurdles can be cleared, as we slowly unravel its enigmas.Curriculum design can be greatly improved through the use of neuroscience education. This involves tailoring effective learning strategies to accommodate learners unique qualities. Additionally, educational neuroscience research has been integrated into teaching techniques to promote collaboration and social interaction among learners, while maintaining a state of optimal flow in learning materials. Utilizing educational neuroscience benefits, such as enhanced brain development, improved learning, and evidence-based algorithms for instructional strategies, can be achieved. Nevertheless, it is important to address the varied needs of learners and approach the application of educational neuroscience carefully.Research in educational neuroscience is a topic of interest in education. This research has the potential to change learning strategies and curriculum design but also comes with its unique challenges. Through the collected data, this study aimed to identify the benefits of educational neuroscience in improving education and present the limitations and possible solutions for implementing it successfully. This research seeks to positively revolutionize education by gaining insight into effective learning strategies.

Abstract:This study's focus was to ascertain how teaching strategies and teacher motivation affected students' performance in integrated science in Ghana's Upper East. The researcher employed a survey design. Heads of senior high schools and teachers of integrated science constitute the study's population. Purposeful and straightforward random samplings were utilised to choose the respondents. 84 respondents made up the sample, comprising 80 integrated science teachers and 4 school heads. A structured questionnaire served as the primary tool, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to analyse the data (SPSS). The data analysis revealed that a large percentage of integrated science instructors (52.5%) thought that teacher motivation led them to perform in-depth study in order to teach effectively. Additionally, it was found that every integrated science instructor stated that skilled teachers employ effective teaching strategies to raise student achievement.
Teaching the Science in Neuroscience to Protect From Neuromyths: From Courses to Fieldwork

Abstract:In recent decades, Cognitive Neuroscience has evolved from a rather arcane field trying to understand how the brain supports mental activities, to one that contributes to public policies. In this article, we focus on the contributions from Cognitive Neuroscience to Education. This line of research has produced a great deal of information that can potentially help in the transformation of Education, promoting interventions that help in several domains including literacy and math learning, social skills and science. The growth of the Neurosciences has also created a public demand for knowledge and a market for neuro-products to fulfill these demands, through books, booklets, courses, apps and websites. These products are not always based on scientific findings and coupled to the complexities of the scientific theories and evidence, have led to the propagation of misconceptions and the perpetuation of neuromyths. This is particularly harmful for educators because these misconceptions might make them abandon useful practices in favor of others not sustained by evidence. In order to bridge the gap between Education and Neuroscience, we have been conducting, since 2013, a set of activities that put educators and scientists to work together in research projects. The participation goes from discussing the research results of our projects to being part and deciding aspects of the field interventions. Another strategy consists of a course centered around the applications of Neuroscience to Education and their empirical and theoretical bases. These two strategies have to be compared to popularization efforts that just present Neuroscientific results. We show that the more the educators are involved in the discussion of the methodological bases of Neuroscientific knowledge, be it in the course or as part of a stay, the better they manage the underlying concepts. We argue that this is due to the understanding of scientific principles, which leads to a more profound comprehension of what the evidence can and cannot support, thus shielding teachers from the false allure of some commercial neuro-products. We discuss the three approaches and present our efforts to determine whether they lead to a strong understanding of the conceptual and empirical base of Neuroscience.
Predictors of anxiety and depressive symptoms among teachers in Ghana: Evidence from a randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Rationale: While teachers are heralded as key drivers of student learning outcomes, little attention has been paid to teachers' mental health, especially in less-developed countries such as Ghana. Professional background, workplace environment, and personal life stressors may threaten teachers' mental health and subsequent effectiveness in the classroom. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to investigate 1) whether and how professional background, workplace environment, and personal life stressors predicted teachers' anxiety and depressive symptoms, and 2) whether participation in a professional development intervention predicted change in teachers' symptoms over the course of one school year in Ghana. Method: We used multilevel models to examine predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms among 444 kindergarten teachers (98% female; age range: 18-69) who participated in the Quality Preschool for Ghana (QP4G) Study. QP4G was a school-randomized control trial (n = 108 public schools; n = 132 private schools) evaluating a one-year teacher professional development intervention program implemented with and without parental-awareness meetings. Teacher depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed at baseline before the intervention and at the end of the school year. Results: Poor workplace environment was associated with increased anxiety and depressive symptoms. Social support also predicted symptoms, with lack of support from students' parents and being new to the local community associated with more anxiety symptoms. Within teachers' personal lives, household food insecurity predicted more depressive symptoms. Finally, anxiety and depressive symptoms increased for all teachers over the school year. However, randomization to either intervention was linked to a significantly smaller increase in symptoms over the school year. Conclusions: Results suggest that teachers' personal and professional lives are consequential for their mental health, and that professional development interventions that provide training and in-class coaching and parent engagement may benefit teachers' mental health.

Abstract:This study evaluated a new teaching module about "Brain and Learning" using a controlled design. The module was implemented in high school biology classes and comprised three lessons: (1) brain processes underlying learning; (2) neuropsychological development during adolescence; and (3) lifestyle factors that influence learning performance. Participants were 32 biology teachers who were interested in "Brain and Learning" and 1241 students in grades 8-9. Teachers' knowledge and students' beliefs about learning potential were examined using online questionnaires. Results indicated that before intervention, biology teachers were significantly less familiar with how the brain functions and develops than with its structure and with basic neuroscientific concepts (46 vs. 75% correct answers). After intervention, teachers' knowledge of "Brain and Learning" had significantly increased (64%), and more students believed that intelligence is malleable (incremental theory). This emphasizes the potential value of a short teaching module, both for improving biology teachers' insights into "Brain and Learning," and for changing students' beliefs about intelligence.

A school mental health literacy curriculum resource training approach: effects on Tanzanian teachers’ mental health knowledge, stigma and help-seeking efficacy

Abstract:BackgroundMental health literacy (MHL) is foundational for mental health promotion, prevention, stigma reduction, and care; School supported information pertaining to MHL in sub-Saharan Africa is extremely limited, including in Tanzania. Successful application of a school MHL curriculum resource may be an effective way to increase teacher MHL and therefore help to improve mental health outcomes for students.MethodsSecondary school teachers in Tanzania were trained on the African Guide (AG) a school MHL curriculum resource culturally adapted from a Canadian MHL resource (The Guide) for use in Africa. Teacher training workshops on the classroom application of the AG were used to evaluate its impact on mental health literacy in a sample of Tanzanian Secondary school teachers. Pre-post training assessment of participant knowledge and attitudes was conducted. Help-seeking efficacy for teachers themselves and their interventions for students, friends, family members and peers were determined.ResultsPaired t test (n = 37) results demonstrate highly significant improvements in teacher’s overall knowledge (p < 0.001; d = 1.14), including mental health knowledge, (p < 0.001; d = 1.14) and curriculum specific knowledge (p < 0.01; d = 0.63). Teachers’ stigma against mental illness decreased significantly following the training (p < 0.001; d = 0.61). Independent t tests comparing the paired sample against unpaired sample also demonstrated significant differences between the groups for teacher’s overall knowledge (p < 0.001). Teachers also reported high rates (greater than ¾ of the sample) of positive help-seeking efficacy for themselves as well as for their students, friends, family members and peers. As a result of the training, the number of students teachers identified for potential mental health care totaled over 200.ConclusionsThese positive results, when taken together with other research, suggest that the use of a classroom-based resource (the AG) that integrates MHL into existing school curriculum through training teachers may be an effective and sustainable way to increase the MHL (improved knowledge, decreased stigma and positive help-seeking efficacy) of teachers in Tanzania. As this study replicated the results of a previous intervention in Malawi, consideration could be given to scaling up this intervention in both countries and applying this resource and approach in other countries in East Africa.

Primary lactase deficiency and past malarial endemicity in Sardinia.

Abstract:BACKGROUND It has recently been suggested that primary lactase deficiency might have been selected for by malaria, as occurred for beta-thalassaemia and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. However, recently we have found that the prevalence of primary lactase deficiency in the area of Sassari (Northern Sardinia), where, in the past, there was intermediate malarial endemicity, is comparable to that observed in the adult population from other areas of Southern Italy where malaria was less endemic. AIMS To address the problem further, we have determined the prevalence of primary lactase deficiency, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency deficiency and beta-thalassaemia trait in the populations of three Sardinian villages which differ in altitude above sea-level, socioeconomic features, history of endemic malaria and prevalence of b-thalassaemia and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. SUBJECTS We tested 138 adult males: 53 were from Fonni (a non-malarial mountain village, with a strong pastoral tradition), 38 from Lodé (a village with a similar pastoral tradition, but high malarial endemicity in the past) and 47 from Terralba (a lowland fishing village with an agricultural tradition and heavy malarial morbidity and mortality). METHODS A blood sample was obtained in all subjects for determination of HbA2 and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. Lactase deficiency was assessed by measuring breath hydrogen production after oral administration of lactose (50 g), by gas-chromatography. RESULTS The frequencies of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and of beta-thalassaemia trait in the non-malarial village of Fonni were strikingly low, compared to frequencies found in the two villages (Terralba and Lodé) with a very high past malarial morbidity. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of lactase deficiency in the three groups of subjects from the three villages. CONCLUSIONS These data obtained in Northern Sardinia do not support the hypothesis of a selection of primary lactase deficiency by malaria. For definitive conclusions, however, the malaria hypothesis should be tested in other parts of the world.
The Effects of a Relationship-Focused Professional Development Intervention on Infant and Toddler Teachers' Mindfulness-Based Strategies for Coping

Abstract:Teaching is a demanding profession with teachers of very young children reporting high rates of stress and exhaustion. We tested the effects of a relationship-focused professional development intervention designed to enhance teachers' use of mindfulness-based strategies to support coping on trajectories of teachers' stress, exhaustion (emotional, physical, and mental), and coping. Infant and toddler teachers (N = 81) from Early Head Start (EHS) or EHS childcare partnerships (CCP) were randomized to the intervention or usual care control condition. Using ecological momentary assessment, teachers completed twice-weekly reports of stress, exhaustion, coping, and coping strategy effectiveness via smartphones for 40 weeks. Multilevel linear regression modeling, accounting for within-person repeated measures, showed no intervention effects on stress and exhaustion trajectories. Teachers in the intervention reported increased use of mindfulness-based strategies for coping over time as compared to the control group, although frequency of use peaked and then declined. While perceptions of stress and exhaustion did not change, teachers' increased use of mindfulness-based strategies suggests improvements in how teachers managed stress and exhaustion; however, the decline in use of coping suggests the need for ongoing support within the workplace.

Abstract:Abstract A trauma-informed approach can give teachers the strategies they need to help children affected by trauma reach their full potential in the classroom. Mindfulness-based social–emotional learning (SEL) programs equip teachers with essential tools to create a trauma-informed classroom, which in turn helps alleviate stress associated with supporting trauma-impacted children. Because existing research on SEL programs has predominantly focused on student well-being, there is a paucity of research examining teacher outcomes and the integration of a trauma-informed framework. The purpose of the study was to investigate the benefits of trauma-informed training and MindUP delivery on educator attitudes and burnout. Intervention educators received trauma-informed and MindUP training and implemented MindUP in their classrooms. Comparison educators did not participate in training and taught their usual curriculum. We compared trauma-informed attitudes and burnout levels among 112 educators ( n = 71 intervention, n = 41 comparison) using the Attitudes Related to Trauma-Informed Care (ARTIC) scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Pre- and post-intervention quantitative data were augmented by qualitative focus group data. Results showed that educators in the intervention group reported significant decreases in emotional exhaustion, and significant improvements in the reactions subscale and overall scores on the ARTIC scale. Greatest improvements in self-efficacy and personal accomplishment were observed among educators who implemented MindUP for two consecutive years. These findings were supported by focus group data. Our results show that infusing trauma-informed training with an existing mindfulness-based SEL intervention may encourage teachers to embrace trauma-sensitive attitudes and reduce burnout.
