Abstract:Monte Carlo computer simulations in the canonical and grand canonical statistical ensemble were used to explore the properties of the central force (CF1) water model. The intramolecular structure of the H$_2$O molecule is well reproduced by the model. Emphasis was made on hydrogen bonding, and on the tehrahedral, $q$, and translational, $\tau$, order parameters. An energetic definition of the hydrogen bond gives more consistent results for the average number of hydrogen bonds compared to the one-parameter distance criterion. At 300 K, an average value of 3.8 was obtained. The $q$ and $\tau$ metrics were used to elucidate the water-like anomalous behaviour of the CF1 model. The structural anomalies lead to the density anomaly, with a good agreement of the model's density with the experimental $\rho(T)$ trends. The chemical potential-density projection of the model's equation of state was explored. Vapour-liquid coexistence was observed at sufficiently low temperatures.

Unravelling the contribution of local structures to the anomalies of water: the synergistic action of several factors

Abstract:We investigate the microscopic origin of water's anomalies by inspecting the hydrogen bond network (HBN) and the spatial organization of low-density-liquid (LDL) like and high-density-liquid (HDL) like environments. Specifically, we simulate --via classical molecular dynamics simulations-- the isobaric cooling of a sample composed by 512 water molecules from ambient to deeply undercooled conditions at three pressures, namely 1 bar, 400 bar and 1000 bar. \emph{In correspondence with the Widom line}, (i) the HDL-like dominating cluster undergoes fragmentation caused by the percolation of LDL-like aggregates following a spinodal-like kinetics; (ii) such fragmentation always occur s at a "critical" concentration of $\sim20-30\%$ in LDL; (iii) the HBN within LDL-like environments is characterized by an equal number of pentagonal and hexagonal rings that create a state of maximal frustration between a configuration that promotes crystallization (hexagonal ring) and a configuration that hinders it (pentagonal ring); (iv) the spatial organization of HDL-like environments shows a marked variation. Moreover, the inspection of the global symmetry shows that the intermediate-range order decreases in correspondence with the Wid om line, and such decrease becomes more pronounced upon increasing the pressure, hence supporting the hypothesis of a liquid-liquid critical point. Our results reveal and rationalize the complex microscopic origin of water's anomalies as the cooperative effect of several fac tors acting synergistically. Beyond implications for water, our findings may be extended to other materials displaying anomalous behaviours.

Abstract:Tetrahedral interactions describe the behaviour of the most abundant and technologically important materials on Earth, such as water, silicon, carbon, germanium, and countless others. Despite their differences, these materials share unique common physical behaviours, such as liquid anomalies, open crystalline structures, and extremely poor glass-forming ability at ambient pressure. To reveal the physical origin of these anomalies and their link to the shape of the phase diagram, we systematically study the properties of the Stillinger-Weber potential as a function of the strength of the tetrahedral interaction $\lambda$. We uncover a new transition to a re-entrant spinodal line at low values of $\lambda$, accompanied with a change in the dynamical behaviour, from Non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius. We then show that a two-state model can provide a comprehensive understanding on how the thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of this important class of materials depend on the strength of the tetrahedral interaction. Our work establishes a deep link between the shape of phase diagram and the thermodynamic and dynamic properties through local structural ordering in liquids, and hints at why water is so special among all substances.

Abstract:We investigate the occurrence of waterlike thermodynamic and dynamic anomalous behavior in a one dimensional lattice gas model. The system thermodynamics is obtained using the transfer matrix technique and anomalies on density and thermodynamic response functions are found. When the hydrogen bond (molecules separated by holes) is more attractive than the van der Waals interaction (molecules in contact) a transition between two fluid structures is found at null temperature and high pressure. This transition is analogous to a `critical point' and intimately connects the anomalies in density and in thermodynamic response functions. Monte Carlo simulations were performed in the neighbourhood of this transition and used to calculate the self diffusion constant, which increases with density as in liquid water.

Abstract:A site-site interaction model is proposed for water in two-dimension, as an alternative to the traditional Mercedes-Benz model. In MB model, water molecules are modeled as 2-dimensional Lennard-Jones disks with three hydrogen bonding arms arranged symmetrically, resembling the Mercedes-Benz logo. The MB model qualitatively predicts both the anomalous properties of pure water and the anomalous solvation thermodynamics of non-polar molecules. One of the features of this earlier model was to have a pair correlation function with first peak for the Lennard-Jones contact distinct of that corresponding to the hydrogen bonding, which is very different from real water which has a single first peak, but a dual peak for the structure factor. The site-site model proposed here reproduces this typical feature of real water, both in real and reciprocal space. It also reproduces several of the known anomalies of real water, such as the density maximum. In addition, because of the screened Coulomb interaction between the sites, the new model appear to exhibit more homogeneity that the MB models and their variants, the latter which is highlighted by a k=0 increase of their structure factors. The new model transfers the usual bond order paradigm into a charge order paradigm, enforcing atom-atom interactions over orientational interactions.

Abstract:The thermodynamic, dynamic and structural behavior of a water-like system confined in a matrix is analyzed for increasing confining geometries. The liquid is modeled by a two dimensional associating lattice gas model that exhibits density and diffusion anomalies, in similarity to the anomalies present in liquid water. The matrix is a triangular lattice in which fixed obstacles impose restrictions to the occupation of the particles. We show that obstacules shortens all lines, including the phase coexistence, the critical and the anomalous lines. The inclusion of a very dense matrix not only suppress the anomalies but also the liquid-liquid critical point.

Abstract:In this work we explore the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model as a fluid system modelling liquid phases of different densities. This model naturally displays two length scales of interaction, which are connected with waterlike anomalies. We analyze the density anomaly as a function of the model parameters, namely the hopping, on-site and first neighbor interactions. We show that this anomaly is present for a wide range of model parameters and is connected to a ground-state liquid-liquid critical point.

Abstract:Liquid water is well-known for its intriguing thermodynamic anomalies in the supercooled state. The phenomenological two-state models - based on the assumption of the existence of two types of competing local states (or, structures) in liquid water - have been extremely successful in describing water's thermodynamic anomalies. However, the precise structural features of these competing local states in liquid water still remain elusive. Here, we have employed a geometrical order parameter-free approach to unambiguously identify the two types of competing local states -- entropically and energetically-favored -- with significantly different structural and energetic features in the TIP4P/2005 liquid water. This identification is based on the heterogeneous structural relaxation of the system in the potential energy landscape (PEL) during the steepest-descent energy minimization. This heterogeneous relaxation is characterized using order parameters inspired by the spin-glass transition in frustrated magnetic systems. We have further established a direct relationship between the population fluctuation of the two states and the anomalous behavior of the heat capacity in supercooled water. The composition-dependent spatial distribution of the entropically-favored local states shows an interesting crossover from a spanning network-like single cluster to the spatially delocalized clusters in the close vicinity of the Widom line. Additionally, this study establishes a direct relationship between the topographic features of the PEL and the water's thermodynamic anomalies in the supercooled state and provides alternate markers (in addition to the locus of maxima of thermodynamic response functions) for the Widom line in the phase plane.

Abstract:Free energy differences $\Delta F:=F-F_{\text{prism}}$ are computed for several isomers of water hexamer relative to the "prism" isomer using the self-consistent phonons method. %$\Delta F:=F-F({prism})$ We consider the isotope effect defined by the quantity $\delta F_{D_2O}:=\Delta F_{\rm D_2O}-\Delta F_{\rm H_2O}$, and the quantum effect, $\delta F_{\hbar=0}:=\Delta F_{\hbar=0}-\Delta F_{\rm H_2O}$, and evaluate them using different flexible water models. While both $\delta F_{D_2O}$ and $\delta F_{\hbar=0}$ are found to be rather small for all of the potentials, they are especially small for two of the empirical models, q-TIP4P/F and TTM3-F, compared to q-SPC/Fw and the two {\it abinitio}-based models, WHBB and HBB2-pol. This qualitative difference in the properties of different water models cannot be explained by one being "more accurate" than the other. We speculate as to whether the observed anomalies are caused by the special properties of water systems, or are an artifact of either the potential energy surface form/parametrization or the numerical approximation used.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the dynamic properties of the minimal Bell-Lavis (BL) water model and their relation to the thermodynamic anomalies. The Bell-Lavis model is defined on a triangular lattice in which water molecules are represented by particles with three symmetric bonding arms interacting through van der Waals and hydrogen bonds. We have studied the model diffusivity in different regions of the phase diagram through Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that the model displays a region of anomalous diffusion which lies inside the region of anomalous density, englobed by the line of temperatures of maximum density (TMD). Further, we have found that the diffusivity undergoes a dynamic transition which may be classified as fragile-to-strong transition at the critical line only at low pressures. At higher densities, no dynamic transition is seen on crossing the critical line. Thus evidence from this study is that relation of dynamic transitions to criticality may be discarded.

Abstract:Thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of water play a crucial role in supporting life on our planet. The two-state theory attributes these anomalies to a dynamic equilibrium between locally favored tetrahedral structures (LFTSs) and disordered normal liquid structures. This theory provides a straightforward, phenomenological explanation for water’s unique thermodynamic and dynamic characteristics. To validate this two-state feature, it is critical to unequivocally identify these structural motifs in a dynamically fluctuating disordered liquid. In this study, we employ a recently introduced structural parameter (θavg) that characterizes the local angular order within the first coordination shell to identify these LFTSs through molecular dynamics simulations. We employ both realistic water models with a liquid–liquid critical point (LLCP) and a coarse-grained water model without an LLCP to study water’s anomalies in low-pressure regions below 2 kbar. The two-state theory consistently describes water’s thermodynamic anomalies in these models, both with and without an LLCP. This suggests that the anomalies predominantly result from the two-state features rather than criticality, particularly within experimentally accessible temperature–pressure regions.

The Rise and Fall of Anomalies in Tetrahedral Liquids

Abstract:The thermodynamic liquid-state anomalies and associated structural changes of the Stillinger-Weber family of liquids are mapped out as a function of the degree of tetrahedrality of the interaction potential, focusing in particular on tetrahedrality values suitable for modeling C, H2O, Si, Ge and Sn. We show that the density anomaly, associated with a rise in molar volume on isobaric cooling, emerges at intermediate tetrahedralities (e.g. Ge, Si and H2O) but is absent in the low (e.g. Sn) and high (e.g. C) tetrahedrality liquids. The rise in entropy on isothermal compression associated with the density anomaly is related to the structural changes in the liquid using the pair correlation entropy. An anomalous increase in the heat capacity on isobaric cooling exists at high tetrahedralities but is absent at low tetrahedralities (e.g. Sn). Structurally, this heat capacity anomaly originates in a sharp rise in the fraction of four-coordinated particles and local tetrahedral order in the liquid as its structure approaches that of the tetrahedral crystal.

Abstract:The Bell-Lavis model for liquid water is investigated through numerical simulations. The lattice-gas model on a triangular lattice presents orientational states and is known to present a highly bonded low density phase and a loosely bonded high density phase. We show that the model liquid-liquid transition is continuous, in contradiction with mean-field results on the Husimi cactus and from the cluster variational method. We define an order parameter which allows interpretation of the transition as an order-disorder transition of the bond-network. Our results indicate that the order-disorder transition is in the Ising universality class. Previous proposal of an Ehrenfest second order transition is discarded. A detailed investigation of anomalous properties has also been undertaken. The line of density maxima in the HDL phase is stabilized by fluctuations, absent in the mean-field solution.

Abstract:While the water molecule is simple, its condensed phase liquid behavior is so complex that no consensus description has emerged despite three centuries of effort. Here we identify features of its behavior that are the most peculiar, hence suggest ways forward. We examine the properties of water at the boundaries of common experience, including stable states at high pressure, the supercooled state at normal and elevated pressure, and the stretched ("negative pressure") state, out to the limits of mechanical stability. The familiar anomalies at moderate pressures (viscosity and density (TMD) behavior, etc.), are not explained by H-bond breaking, according to common bond-breaking criteria. A comparison of data on the TMD, at both positive and negative pressures, with the predictions of popular pair potential models, shows dramatic discrepancies appearing in the stretched liquid domain. This prompts questions on the second critical point (TC2) hypothesis that has been guiding much current thinking. We turn to related systems for guidance, reviewing a hierarchy of water-like anomalies. We conclude that water models are far from complete and that proper understanding of water will depend on success in mastering the measurement of liquid behavior in the negative pressure domain - which we discuss.

A novel anomalous region of water

Abstract:Water is the most important liquid in the Universe. At the same time it is the most anomalous liquid. It demonstrates several dozens of anomalies, among which are density anomaly, diffusion anomaly etc. Anomalous behavior of water is a topic numerous publications. However, most of the publications investigate the anomalous behavior of water in the vicinity of critical points: the liquid-gas critical point and the second hypothetical critical point in supercooled region. Here we analyze experimental data on such properties of water as heat capacity, speed of sound, dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity. We show that these properties demonstrate anomalous maxima and minima in a region which is far from both critical points. Therefore, we find a novel region of anomalous properties of water (anomalous triangle) which cannot be related to critical fluctuations. We also perform a molecular dynamics simulations of this region with two common water models - SPC/E and TIP4P - and show that these models fail to describe the novel anomalous region.

Abstract:Recent probing of H2O-D2O mixtures by various means (neutron deep-inelastic scattering, Raman absorption, electrical H+/D+ conductivity) revealed an unexpected dependence of the relevant physical quantities on the isotopic composition of the mixture. We show that these observation can find their physical rationale in the context of an approach to the physics of liquid water which takes into account the non-negligible interaction of the molecules with the electromagnetic field, from which a two-fluid micro- scopical picture of water naturally emerges.
Hydrophobic Interaction Model for Upper and Lower Critical Solution Temperatures

Abstract:Hydration of hydrophobic solutes in water is the cause of different phenomena, including the hydrophobic heat-capacity anomaly, which are not yet fully understood. Because of its topicality, there has recently been growing interest in the mechanism of hydrophobic aggregation, and in the physics on which it is based. In this study we use a simple yet powerful mixture model for water, an adapted two-state Muller-Lee-Graziano model, to describe the energy levels of water molecules as a function of their proximity to non-polar solute molecules. The model is shown to provide an appropriate description of many-body interactions between the hydrophobic solute particles. The solubility and aggregation of hydrophobic substances is studied by evaluating detailed Monte Carlo simulations in the vicinity of the first-order aggregation phase transition. A closed-loop coexistence curve is found, which is consistent with a mean-field calculation carried out for the same system. In addition, the destabilizing effect of a chaotropic substance in the solution is studied by suitable modification of the MLG model. These findings suggest that a simple model for the hydrophobic interaction may contain the primary physical processes involved in hydrophobic aggregation and in the chaotropic effect.

Abstract:Goldschmidt-Pauling contraction of the H-O polar-covalent bond elongates and polarizes the other noncovalent part of the hydrogen bond (O:H-O), that is, the O:H van der Waals bond, significantly, through the Coulomb repulsion between the electron pairs of adjacent oxygen (O-O). This process enlarges and stiffens those H2O molecules having fewer than four neighbors such as molecular clusters, hydration shells, and the surface skins of water and ice. The shortening of the H-O bond raises the local density of bonding electrons, which in turn polarizes the lone pairs of electrons on oxygen. The stiffening of the shortened H-O bond increases the magnitude of the O1s binding energy shift, causes the blue shift of the H-O phonon frequencies, and elevates the melting point of molecular clusters and ultrathin films of water, which gives rise to their elastic, hydrophobic, highly-polarized, ice-like, and low-density behavior at room temperature.

Abstract:The advancement of experimental methods has provided new information about the structure and structural fluctuations of water. Despite the appearance of numerous models, which aim to describe a wide range of thermodynamic and electrical characteristics of water, there is a deficit in systemic understanding of structuring in aqueous solutions. A particular challenge is the fact that even pure water is a heterogeneous, multicomponent system composed of molecular and supramolecular structures. The possibility of the existence of such structures and their nature are of fundamental importance for various fields of science. However, great difficulties arise in modeling relatively large supramolecular structures (e.g. extended hydration shells), where the bonds between molecules are characterized by low energy. Generally, such structures may be non-equilibrium but relatively long-lived. Evidently, the short times of water microstructure exchanges do not mean short lifetimes of macrostructures, just as the instability of individual parts does not mean the instability of the entire structure. To explain this paradox, we review the data from experimental and theoretical research. Today, only some of the experimental results on the lifetime of water structures have been confirmed by modeling, so there is not a complete theoretical picture of the structure of water yet. We propose a new hierarchical water macrostructure model to resolve the issue of the stability of water structures. In this model, the structure of water is presented as consisting of many hierarchically related levels (the stratification model). The stratification mechanism is associated with symmetry breaking at the formation of the next level, even with minimal changes in the properties of the previous level. Such a hierarchical relationship can determine the unique physico-chemical properties of water systems and, in the future, provide a complete description of them.
