Abstract:Liquid water is well-known for its intriguing thermodynamic anomalies in the supercooled state. The phenomenological two-state models - based on the assumption of the existence of two types of competing local states (or, structures) in liquid water - have been extremely successful in describing water's thermodynamic anomalies. However, the precise structural features of these competing local states in liquid water still remain elusive. Here, we have employed a geometrical order parameter-free approach to unambiguously identify the two types of competing local states -- entropically and energetically-favored -- with significantly different structural and energetic features in the TIP4P/2005 liquid water. This identification is based on the heterogeneous structural relaxation of the system in the potential energy landscape (PEL) during the steepest-descent energy minimization. This heterogeneous relaxation is characterized using order parameters inspired by the spin-glass transition in frustrated magnetic systems. We have further established a direct relationship between the population fluctuation of the two states and the anomalous behavior of the heat capacity in supercooled water. The composition-dependent spatial distribution of the entropically-favored local states shows an interesting crossover from a spanning network-like single cluster to the spatially delocalized clusters in the close vicinity of the Widom line. Additionally, this study establishes a direct relationship between the topographic features of the PEL and the water's thermodynamic anomalies in the supercooled state and provides alternate markers (in addition to the locus of maxima of thermodynamic response functions) for the Widom line in the phase plane.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The key problem that this paper attempts to solve is to reveal the microscopic structural origin of thermodynamic anomalies in super - cooled water. Specifically, the author aims to clearly identify two competing local states in liquid water (i.e., entropy - favorable and energy - favorable local states) and explore the relationship between these local states and the abnormal behavior of thermodynamic response functions such as heat capacity in super - cooled water. ### Research Background Liquid water exhibits many unique thermodynamic anomalies in the super - cooled state, such as a sharp increase in specific heat capacity (\(C_P\)) and isothermal compressibility (\(\kappa_T\)). To understand these anomalies, researchers have proposed a two - state model, assuming that liquid water consists of two different types of local structures: high - density liquid (HDL) and low - density liquid (LDL). However, these models have not yet provided detailed molecular - level structural features, so they cannot clearly explain the specific microscopic origin of these anomalies. ### Core Problems of the Paper 1. **Clearly Identify Two Local States**: - The author uses a method independent of geometric parameters to clearly identify these two local states in the potential energy landscape (PEL) through energy minimization by the steepest - descent method. - These local states are classified based on the heterogeneous structure relaxation of the system on the PEL and characterized by an order parameter inspired by the spin - glass phase transition. 2. **Explore the Relationship between Local States and Thermodynamic Anomalies**: - The author establishes a direct relationship between the population fluctuations of the two local states and the abnormal behavior of heat capacity in super - cooled water. - By analyzing the energy changes during the local structure relaxation process, the connection between the topological features of these local states on the PEL and the thermodynamic anomalies of water is revealed. 3. **Explore the Markers of the Widom Line**: - The author proposes a new method to mark the Widom line (i.e., the trajectory of the maximum value of thermodynamic response functions), which provides a new perspective for understanding the liquid - liquid critical point. ### Methods and Results - **Simulation and Calculation**: - Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out using the TIP4P/2005 water model to study the system behavior at different temperatures and pressures. - Through energy minimization by the steepest - descent method, the thermal equilibrium configurations are mapped to their corresponding inherent structures (IS), and two parameters \(\phi_i\) and \(q_t\) are defined according to the changes in local structures to distinguish the two local states. - **Main Findings**: - When approaching the temperature of the maximum heat capacity \(T_{C_{max}}\), the population ratio of the two local states is close to 1:1, which coincides with the maximum value of heat capacity. - During the heterogeneous structure relaxation process, the entropy - favorable state (s - state) and the energy - favorable state (ε - state) exhibit significantly different local structures and energy characteristics. - By analyzing the energy fluctuations on the PEL, the direct connection between these local states and the thermodynamic abnormal behavior is further confirmed. ### Conclusion This study provides new insights into understanding the microscopic structural origin of water by clearly identifying two competing local states in super - cooled water and establishing the connection between them and the thermodynamic abnormal behavior. In addition, the author also proposes a new method to mark the Widom line, which is helpful for a more in - depth understanding of the liquid - liquid critical point and its related phenomena.
