Abstract:The exact string matching is essential in application areas such as Bioinformatics and Intrusion Detection Systems. Speeding-up the string matching algorithm will therefore result in accelerating the searching process in DNA and binary data. Previously, there are two types of fast algorithms exist, bit-parallel based algorithms and hashing algorithms. The bit-parallel based are efficient when dealing with patterns of short lengths, less than 64, but slow on long patterns. On the other hand, hashing algorithms have optimal sublinear average case on large alphabets and long patterns, but the efficiency not so good on small alphabet such as DNA and binary texts. In this paper, the authors present hybrid algorithm to overcome the shortcomings of those previous algorithms. The proposed algorithm is based on q-gram hashing with guaranteeing the maximal shift in advance. Experimental results on random and complete human genome confirm that the proposed algorithm is efficient on various pattern lengths and small alphabet.
The Incidence of Brain Trauma Caused by Road Injuries: Results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Abstract:Background: Road collisions are a significant source of traumatic brain injury (TBI). We aimed to determine the pattern of road injury related TBI (RI-TBI) incidence, as well as its temporal trends. Methods: We collected detailed information on RI-TBI between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) of RI-TBI age standardized incidence rate (ASIR), by sex, region, and cause of road injuries, were assessed to quantify the temporal trends of RI-TBI burden. Results: Globally, incident cases of RI-TBI increased 68.1% from 6,900,000 in 1990 to 11,600,000 in 2019. The overall ASIR increased by an average of 0.43% (95% CI 0.30%-0.56%) per year during this period. The ASIR of RI-TBI due to cyclist, motorcyclist and other road injuries increased between 1990 and 2019; the corresponding EAPCs were 0.56 (95% CI 0.37-0.75), 1.60 (95% CI 1.35-1.86), and 0.75 (95% CI 0.59-0.91), respectively. In contrast, the ASIR of RI-TBI due to motor vehicle and pedestrian decreased with an EAPC of -0.12 and -0.14 respectively. The changing pattern for RI-TBI was heterogeneous across countries and regions. The most pronounced increases were observed in Mexico (EAPC = 3.74), followed by China (EAPC = 2.45) and Lesotho (EAPC = 1.91). Conclusions: RI-TBI remains a major public health concern worldwide, although road safety legislations have contributed to the decreasing incidence in some countries. We found an unfavorable trend in several countries with a relatively low socio-demographic index, suggesting that much more targeted and specific approaches should be adopted in these areas to forestall the increase in RI-TBI.
Pattern, severity and circumtances of injuries sustained in road traffic accidents: A tertiary care hospital-based study

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Expansion in road network, motorization, and urbanization in the country has been accompanied by a rise in road accidents leading to road traffic injuries (RTIs). Today RTIs are one of the leading causes of deaths, disabilities, and hospitalizations with severe socioeconomic costs across the world.OBJECTIVES: The following study analyses the: Age and sex distribution of injured in road traffic accidents (RTAs).Circumstances leading to RTA.Pattern and severity of injuries sustained in RTAs cases.DESIGN: Retrospective record-based study.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to audit retrospectively the circumstances, severity, and pattern of injury sustained by vehicle occupants presenting to the Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) hospital Hapur, for a period of one year. Data were collected using the case sheets of 347 patients from the medical records section of hospital and analyzed using SPSS computer software version 16.0. Results are interpreted in terms of percentage, mean, chi-square, and z-test.RESULTS: The pattern and severity of injuries sustained by 347 vehicle occupants admitted to the emergency department of SIMS, Hapur were retrospectively documented. Male victims 258 (74.35%) were more commonly involved than females 89 (25.65%) and majority of victims 141 (40.63%) were in age group of 20-30 years. Urban victims 222 (64.00%) outnumbered rural. The most frequently injured body regions were the extremities 499 (53.54%), followed by maxillofacial180(19.31%).. Out of total 802 external injuries, the most common type of injury was lacerations 307 (38.28%), abrasions 306 (38.15%)and followed by bruises 154 (19.20%). Multiple external injuries were more common on upper limb 216 (26.93%), lower limbs 210 (26.18%) and face 170 (21.20%), while crush injuries were more predominently seen in both the limbs. While laceration were common on face 120 (38.83%). Injuries to the chest 19 (2.36%), abdomen13 (1.61%), and spine 11 (1.36%) were seen in roughy equal proprotion of victims. The bones on right side 55 (55.55%) were more commonly fractured which is statistically significant. Skull injuries were mostly found on frontal 77 (47.53%), followed by parietal bone 33 (20.37%), mostly on right side.CONCLUSION: RTAs constitute a major public health problem in our setting. Urgent preventive measures targeting at reducing the occurrence of RTAs are necessary to reduce the morbidity and mortality resulting from these injuries.
Incidence of Maxillofacial Injuries in the Emergency Department-Retrospective Study

Abstract:Introduction: Maxillofacial injuries are a common finding among the patients reporting to the Emergency Department. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the occurrence and characteristics of Oral and Maxillofacial injuries among the patients who reported to the Emergency Department at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bengaluru. Materials and method: The study was carried out retrospectively by analysing the medical records of patients who were presented with maxillofacial injuries, under the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery over a period of nine years. A total of 2831 patients were evaluated and segregated into different age groups. Standardized data was gathered on the number and location of lacerations, abrasions, fractures of facial bones, associated head injuries and treatment done. Result: It was found that the majority of the maxillofacial injuries reported to the emergency department are soft tissue injuries comprising of 71.49% of total cases among which 55.77% cases were with single or multiple lacerations and 15.72% cases with abrasions alone. The most common cause of facial injuries is road traffic accidents 56.8% followed by self-fall (33.8%) and assault (5.837%). The most common site of occurrence of laceration was noted to be forehead laceration (13.2%) followed by chin (10.97%), supraorbital (9.44%), upper lip (8.1%) and lower lip (5.97%). Among the fracture cases, Mid-facial fracture occurred in 58.84%, followed by mandibular fractures at 20.86% being the next most common occurrence. Conclusion: The results and understanding obtained from this study will be utilized to develop focused treatments for reducing the severity and frequency of maxillofacial trauma. Further, we believe that public awareness campaigns about enhanced safety measures can reduce the occurrence of maxillofacial injuries.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Measles virus continues to cause morbidity and mortality despite the existence of a safe and efficacious vaccine. Measles is associated with induction of both a long-lived protective immune response and immunosuppression. To gain insight into immunological changes during measles virus infection, we examined gene expression in blood mononuclear cells from children with acute measles and children in the convalescent phase compared to uninfected control children. There were 13 significantly upregulated and 206 downregulated genes. Upregulated genes included the immune regulatory molecules interleukin 1β (IL-1β), CIAS-1, tumor necrosis factor alpha, PDE4B, PTGS2, IL-8, CXCL2, CCL4, ICAM-1, CD83, GOS-2, IER3 (IEX-1), and TNFAIP3 (A20). Plasma levels of IL-1β and IL-8 were elevated during measles virus infection. Downregulated genes mainly involved three gene ontology biological processes, transcription, signal transduction, and the immune response, and included IL-16 and cell surface receptors IL-4R, IL-6R, IL-7R, IL-27RA, CCR2, and CCR7. Most mRNAs had not returned to control values 1 month after discharge, consistent with prolonged immune response abnormalities during measles virus infection.
Reducing the Neurotrauma Burden in India-A National Mobilization

Abstract:India has one of the highest TBI burdens due to road traffic accidents (RTAs), with 60% of head injuries being attributable to RTA and more than 150,000 lives being lost annually due to traumatic brain injury (TBI). These numbers have prompted institutions and organizations at international, national, and local levels to mobilize and address this burden through prevention, prehospital care, and in hospital care. Academic institutions such as Andhra Medical College have run local campaigns promoting the wearing of helmets when riding 2-wheelers. Prehospital care institutions such as Gunupati Venkata Krishna - Emergency Management and Research Institute have also made large strides nationally on delivering safe and timely care through novel and focused education to its emergency medical technicians, applying evidence-based practice to all facets of its work. These changes led to implementation of novel and innovative technological solutions for faster and more efficient responses. National institutions such as the Neurological Society of India (NSI) and Neurotrauma Society of India (NTSI) have been instrumental in promoting safety measures such as use of helmets and seatbelts through social media videos, often using celebrities to disseminate the message. NSI have also focused on sharing best practices for the management of TBI through easy-to-use platforms such as YouTube. Institutions such as American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, NSI, and NTSI have collaboratively developed TBI management guidelines that are specific to the Indian population (supported by American Association of South Asian Neurosurgeons). Non-governmental organizations such as the Indian Head Injury Foundation and Save Life Foundation have contributed to this movement by promoting awareness through campaigns and public education. While TBI remains a large burden in India, a mobilization and coalesced efforts of such a scale holds promise for tackling this burden.

Abstract:Introduction: This study is designed to outline the likely patterns of treatment modalities based on patient demographics and mechanism of injury in eastern region of India (industrial area). Objective: To evaluate the various treatment patterns in eastern region of India and for better understanding of providing patient care. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study by collecting data from the records of the patients who reported at our institution from 2018 to 2020. The types of the major procedures done at the department were classified based on the type and the area of the trauma. The data were tabulated using Excel sheet and projected in percentages. Later with statistical analysis by one-way ANOVA, the different groups were compared with SPSS version 20.0. Results: The total number of patients observed were 197. The gender distribution was M/F = 1.31:1. Comminuted mandibular fracture had the highest incidence with RTA (road traffic accident) being the most prevalent etiology, whereas no significant difference was found between the types of procedures performed and demography of the patients. Conclusion: Being a dominant industrial area (Jharkhand), it can be concluded that facial trauma is seen predominant in this part of eastern India due to road traffic accidents with heavy, high-speed vehicles and lack of awareness in using protective safety accessories. This study helped us evaluate the various major surgical procedures performed in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Such data would also act as an educational tool for trainees and for enhancing multidisciplinary meets.

Abstract:Maxillofacial trauma is any physical trauma to the facial region, commonly encountered by maxillofacial surgeons, and is often associated with high morbidity and so constitute quite a significant portion of the workload of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Maxillofacial injuries can occur as an isolated injury or may be associated with multiple injuries in other parts of the body. To assess the patterns, etiology, and treatment modalities of maxillofacial trauma in a teaching hospital in central India, over a 12-year period. Patients with maxillofacial trauma were identified using the department database and clinical records. 264 patients were identified with maxillofacial trauma in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery between January 2006 and December 2018. The study showed that there was a male preponderance in all age groups over female. Of the 264 patients with maxillofacial injuries, 83,33% had isolated lower face (mandibular) fractures, followed by midface fractures (10.60%) and panfacial fractures (6.06%). Road traffic accidents (87.12%) were the most common form of etiology for trauma followed by assaults (10.98%). Most trauma were treated with open reduction internal fixation (89%) than closed reduction (11%). The etiology and pattern of maxillofacial injuries reflect the trauma patterns within the community and can thus provide a guide to help design programs toward prevention and treatment.

Abstract:Objectives: To report and analyze the pattern of maxillofacial injuries in trauma victims and to define the role of a maxillofacial surgeon in an emergency trauma care team. Materials and methods: Trauma patients reported and reporting to the casualty of a tertiaryhospital with facial injuries and other suspected concomitant injuries in the body were included in this study. The complete medical and radiographic records of each patient were reviewed and data was collected in a standard proforma in this 5-year clinical study (3 year of retrospective and 2 year of prospective study). The complete data related to the facial injuries and associated systemic trauma was recorded and statistical analysis conducted. Results: A total of 18,369 patients with trauma were admitted to the hospital from May 2018 to April 2023. Out of these, 11,277 (61.4%) were males and 7,092 (38.6%) were females. Seventy percent of the reported cases with trauma were in the age group of 14–40 years. The incidence of trauma during the monsoon season was highest (n = 7,927, 43%). The commonest etiological factor leading to trauma was road traffic accident (n = 4,510, 40%). Among facial injuries, the mandibular fractures (n = 1,821, 41%) were predominant. Conclusions: The management of polytrauma patients should be undertaken by a team of specialists which should include a maxillofacial surgeon as facial injuries were common. This data is essential in developing and assessing the preventative strategies aimed at decreasing the frequency of facial and other injuries.

Abstract:Road traffic accident has become a public health concern. More than 80% injury-related deaths occurred in low-middle income countries (LMICs). Despite its importance, emergency care accessibility for road crash victims is still questionable. This study aims to review emergency care accessibility from approachability, acceptability, availability, affordability, and appropriateness dimensions for crash victims. This is a scoping review with literatures extracted from ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Scopus. Articles analyzed using PCC (Problem/Population, Concept, Context) of scoping review. 1544 articles identified from databases of which 81 are relevant for full-text screening. The final 12 articles were eligible to be reviewed. Although emergency care is available in most areas, its existence was not well-known. Victims and helpers are treated unfairly in emergency care. Emergency care system also lacks clear coordination and it does not give appropriate treatment in timely manner. There was little evidence of how accessible emergency care to crash victims. Most studies only examined the availability of emergency care without comparing its actual utilization and other determinants impacting its accessibility. Future study should aim to assess approachability, acceptability, affordability, and appropriateness of emergency care. Strengthening emergency care from all dimensions is important to ensure its accessibility.
Three-sided side match finite-state vector quantization

Abstract:Several low bit-rate still-image compression methods have been presented, such as SPHIT, hybrid VQ, and the Wu-Chen (see Proc. IEEE ICASSP, 1997) method. In particular, the image "Lena" can be compressed using less than 0.15 bpp at 31.4 dB or higher. These methods exercise the analysis techniques (wavelet or subband) before distributing the bit rate to each piece of an image, thus the dilemma between bit rate and distortion can be solved. In this paper, we propose a simple but comparable method that adopts the technique of side match VQ only. The side match vector quantization (SMVQ) is an effective VQ coding scheme at low bit-rate. The conventional side match (two-sided) VQ utilizes the codeword information of two neighboring blocks to predict the state codebook of an input vector. We propose a hierarchical three-sided side match finite-state vector quantization (HTSMVQ) method that can: (1) make the state codebook size as small as possible-the size is reduced to one if the prediction can perform perfectly; (2) improve the prediction quality for edge blocks; and (3) regularly refresh the codewords to alleviate the error propagation of side match. In the simulation results, the image "Lena" can be coded with a PSNR 34.682 dB at 0.25 bpp. It is better than SPIHT, EZW, FSSQ and hybrid VQ with 34.1, 33.17, 33.1, and 33.7 dB, respectively. At a bit rate lower than 0.15 bpp, only the enhanced version of EZW performs better than our method, at about 0.14 dB.
Role of the maxillofacial surgeon in identifying the correlation between facial bone fractures and traumatic brain injury - A prospective study

Abstract:Introduction: Maxillofacial trauma accounts for a high percentage of patients reporting to the emergency medicine department and being admitted in the hospital. The purpose of this study was to form a direct association between maxillofacial fractures and traumatic brain injury (TBI).Methods: Ninety patients with maxillofacial fractures that reported to/were referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery were observed for features indicative of TBI based on clinical presentation and radiological interpretations. Parameters such as loss of consciousness, vomiting, dizziness, headache, seizures and the requirement for intubation, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea and otorrhoea were also assessed. Appropriate radiographs for the diagnosis of the fracture were taken followed by a computed tomography (CT) scan when indicated in accordance to the Canadian CT Head Rule. These scans were then assessed for contusion, extradural haemorrhage, subdural haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, pneumocephalus and cranial bone fracture.Results: A total of 90 patients were evaluated, of which 91.1% were males and 8.9% were females. Association between the occurrence of head injury and different maxillofacial bone fractures using the Chi-square test showed a statistical significance of <0.001 in patients with naso-orbito-ethmoid as well as frontal bone fractures. There was a clear association between fractures present in the upper as well as the middle third of the face and traumatic head injury (<i>P</i> ≤ 0.001).Discussion: Patients with the frontal bone and zygomatic bone fractures have a high prevalence of TBI. Patients with the upper and middle third of the face injury are more prone to traumatic head injury and importance should be given to patients with the same and prevent poor prognosis.
Controlled and reversible binding of positively charged quantum dots to lambda DNA.

Abstract:Biomacromolecules/Nanomaterials bioconjugate complexes have many applications in the interdisciplinary research fields. Accessible and easy synthesis methods of these complexes are the key roles for these applications. High quality water-soluble surface-charged quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared via surface modification by amphiphilic surfactants. The positively charged QDs can interact with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecules to form QDs/DNA bioconjugates via self-targeting electrostatic force. The stability of these QDs/DNA bioconjugates is influenced by ionic strength and concentration of negative or neutral surfactants in the solution. High ionic concentration or ca. 10(-3) mol/L surfactants can break the interaction between the QDs and DNA molecules (Lambda DNA/Hind III Marker segments) and controllably release DNA molecules from these bioconjugates. The conformation of DNA molecules has little change during the binding and releasing process. The condensation of lambda DNA molecules can be induced by positively charged QDs. High resolution transmission electron microscopy experiments have revealed the different stages of DNA condensation process, showing the fine structures of QDs/DNA bioconjugates at biomolecular scale. A long chain DNA molecule starts to self-enwind and condense to a porous globule when it is exposing to positively charged QDs but there is no direct interaction between QDs and DNA at early stages of condensation. After the DNA molecule becomes a compact globule, QDs stick onto its surface via electrostatic force. The coil conformation of the DNA molecules can be recovered from globule structure after DNA molecules are controllably released from bioconjugate complexes. These QDs/DNA bioconjugates have great potential applications for gene delivery and at the same time the fluorescence of QDs can be utilized to monitor the DNA releasing process.
Overview of findings from a 2-year study of claimants who had sustained a mild or moderate injury in a road traffic crash: prospective study

Abstract:Background: Studies have shown that in people injured in a road traffic crash, persistent symptoms are common and can lead to significant ongoing personal impact. Hence, elucidating factors associated with the human costs are key to reducing the socio-economic burden of road traffic injuries. Therefore, in this study we aimed to track the experience and key outcomes of persons who had sustained mild/moderate injuries as they returned to health (and work, where relevant) following a road traffic crash. Results: It is an inception study cohort of adults who had sustained mild to moderate injuries (that is, except serious injuries) in motor vehicle crashes in New South Wales, Australia, who were recruited and interviewed at baseline (within 3 months of the crash) and at 6, 12 and 24 months post-injury. We found that minor injuries had major impacts on pain ratings, physical and mental well-being, health-related quality of life and return to work and pre-injury participation during the 24 months post-injury phase. Further, for mild to moderately severe injuries, biopsychosocial factors appear to be prognostic indicators of recovery (not the location or type of injury). Examples of key biopsychosocial factors are: age; preinjury health; quality of life; reactions to injury (catastrophising, and pain); social support and the third party insurance compensation system. Discussion: This study highlights the considerable impact of apparently "minor" road traffic crash injuries at a population level and suggests targeted approaches to the tertiary prevention of long-term morbidity and disability. Study findings have also reiterated the importance of looking beyond the injury to the 'whole person'.

Abstract:Background: The transportation system plays a crucial role in the context of socioeconomic development, whereas the highway infrastructure acts as a base for the transportation system. In recent years, a rich impetus has been given to the development of road infrastructure by Indian governance. There is a need to introspect how well the prevailing highway infrastructure is equipped with emergency rescue management during road accidents. Lack of ambulance service and trauma facilities along the highways results in a steady loss of lives and injuries and increases people's exposure to risks. Objective: This study aims to determine the response time of ambulance reachability to the accident spot on Indian national highways associated with heavy commercial transportation. Also, determining the time to transport the injured to the nearest trauma facility is another factor included as an objective in this investigation. Methods: The study adopted survey-based research, whereby the variables in the questionnaire were designed to record and assess the time for an ambulance to reach the accident spot and, from there, to transport the injured to the trauma management facility on Indian highways. Two hundred twenty-five participants who were either victims/relatives of victims or those involved in the rescue of the injured have participated in the survey. The dates of the accident events were 2017 and 2022. Results: The survey resulted in the identification of two categories of highway accidents. The first category of accidents happened on the highways near city limits/dense settlements, and the second category occurred on the core highways. The percentage of accidents caused on the highways either adjacent to or passing through the city limits/dense settlements was reported to be higher than the accidents on the core highways. Ninety percent of the participants reported successful contact with the ambulance call/service centre, but only ~75% success rate exists for ambulances to reach the accident scene. On the core highways, the time taken for the ambulance to arrive at the accident scene is 25-35 minutes. The results from the survey ascertained that the patients were prioritised for treatment in the nearest hospitals (irrespective of having a trauma facility) at a distance of ~12-20 km, for which the time taken is ~15-25 minutes. Importantly, from the interviews, it is understood that in many cases, these hospitals have further referred to specialty hospitals located in nearby cities or trauma centres with greater facilities. Occasions exist where the injured were taken directly to hospitals 30-40 km from the accident spot, for which the time was more than 40 minutes. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that in either of the accident cases on the highways that are adjacent to/passing through the city limits or on the core highways, the total time for emergency care accessibility is nearly 60 minutes or greater; this implies that in the majority of cases, there is very meagre time left to provide emergency medical care to the needy and injured on the Indian highways to abide by the concept of golden hour. Plausible reforms backed by technology for enabling highways into 'emergency rescuable highways' are highly needed to guarantee a safer and more sustainable transportation system in India.
The State of Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Objective: This scoping review aims to contribute a descriptive analysis of the craniomaxillofacial trauma (CMF trauma) literature in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to identify knowledge gaps, direct future research, and inform policy. Data sources: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Review, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Google Scholar from January 1, 2012 to December 10, 2023. Review methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guided reporting, and the PRISMA flowchart documented database searches. Specific, predefined search terms and inclusion criteria were used for screening, and the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist was used for quality assessment. The search yielded 54 articles, with 13 meeting the inclusion criteria. Key findings were summarized and divided into 7 categories. Results: There were 10,420 patients (7739 [74.3%] male, 2681 [25.7%] female) with a male-to-female ratio of 2.9:1. The mean peak age of incidence of CMF trauma was 30.8 years, ranging from 20 to 40 years. Road traffic accidents were the leading cause (60.4%), followed by assault (27.2%) and falls (12.2%). The most common injuries were soft tissue injury (31.7%), isolated mandibular fracture (22.8%), and isolated middle-third of mandible fracture (18.1%). The most common treatments were closed reduction and immobilization (29.5%), conservative management (27.6%), and open reduction and internal fixation (19.6%). Most patients (77.8%) experienced a treatment delay due to a lack of fixation materials (54.8%) or surgeon unavailability (35.7%). Conclusion: CMF trauma remains a significant cause of global morbidity, yet there remains a lack of high-quality, CMF trauma-specific data in LMICs. Country-specific investigations are required to enhance knowledge and inform novel interventions. Implementing policy change must be community-specific and account for unique cultural barriers, attitudes, and behaviors to maximize patient care outcomes.
Phase-wise injury integrated severity modeling of road accidents: a two-stage hybrid multi-criteria decision-making model

Abstract:The road accident severity analysis of any geographic area is usually based on the total number of accidents, while the significance of minor and grievous injuries is often ignored. Furthermore, most research works on road accident severity applies statistical models and machine-learning techniques with complex interdependencies among the input variables, while very limited multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) models have been developed to analyze the injury severity of road accidents. This study evaluates the road accident severity of 30 Indian cities having a million-plus population with the introduction of a two-stage MCDM model: the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis (MULTIMOORA). The model uses the annual road accident data provided by the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The proposed model identifies the weights of every injury type based on experts' inputs and concludes in the injury integrated severity (IIS) values-based robust rankings of the selected Indian cities. Moreover, the phase-wise injury integrated severity (PIIS) analysis divides all 30 Indian cities into three phases according to the IIS values. The model estimates that Delhi, Chennai, Jaipur, and Bengaluru are the cities with the highest IIS values and got placed within Severity phase I. Moreover, the phase-wise clustered result is uniquely represented with the Pareto distribution to interpret the cumulative severity. The results demonstrate that the proposed model provides a decision-making tool for road safety stakeholders and has the potential to support the severity-based prioritization of road safety intervention programs.

Abstract:Background: Road trauma is a major public health concern, often resulting in reduced health-related quality of life and prolonged absenteeism from work even after so-called 'minor' injuries that do not result in hospitalization. This manuscript compares pre-injury health, sociodemographic characteristics and injury details between age, sex, and road user categories in a cohort of 1,480 road trauma survivors. Methods: This was a prospective observational inception cohort study of road trauma survivors recruited between July 2018 and March 2020 from three trauma centres in British Columbia, Canada. Participants were aged ≥ 16 years and arrived in a participating emergency department within 24 h of involvement in a motor vehicle collision. Data were collected from structured interviews and review of medical records. Results: The cohort of 1,480 road trauma survivors included 280 pedestrians, 174 cyclists, 118 motorcyclists, 683 motor vehicle drivers, and 225 passengers. Median age was 40 (IQR = [27, 57]) years; 680 (46%) were female. Males and younger patients were significantly more likely to report better pre-injury physical health. Motorcyclists and cyclists tended to report better physical health and less severe somatic symptoms, whereas pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers reported better mental health. Injury severity and hospital admission rates were higher in pedestrians and motorcyclists and lower in motorists. Upper and lower extremity injuries were most common in pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, whereas neck injuries were most common in motor vehicle drivers and passengers. Conclusions: In a large cohort of road trauma survivors, overall injury severity was low. Motorcyclists and pedestrians, but not cyclists, had more severe injuries than motorists. Extremity injuries were more common in vulnerable road users. Future research will investigate one-year recovery outcomes and identify risk factors for poor recovery.

Abstract:Epidemiology of maxillofacial injuries mainly deals with the distribution of time,space and population of injuries,and with the relation between the trauma and various factors.These researches can offer proofs for taking corresponding measures to reduce and prevent the incidence of maxillofacial injuries.The purpose of this article was to review the epidemiologic researches of maxillofacial injuries in the past 15 years,including research methods,incidence,distribution,concomitant injuries and the application of injury severity score in this field.The result demonstrated that maxillofacial injuries accounted for 11% to 34% of the whole body injuries.There was a gradual increasing trend in the incidence of maxillofacial injuries in our country.A large proportion of patients were found in the young adults.The incidence peak occurred in the age group of 10 to 39 years old.The male to female ratio was between 2.11:1 and 6.11:1.Maxillofacial injuries were predominantly caused by traffic accidents,interpersonal violence,falls,sports and industrial accidents.Traffic accidents were the leading cause of maxillofacial injuries in most countries and regions.However,interpersonal violence was the most common cause in some other countries and regions.Concomitant injuries were often seen in the maxillofacial injuries,in which craniocerebral injuries were the most common.
