Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective epidemiological study was to determine the etiology and pattern of maxillofacial injuries in a pediatric population.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data for pediatric maxillofacial trauma patients aged 12 years and younger who were registered at the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital, Kolkata, India, were reviewed and examined. Patients who were treated between October 2016 and September 2018 were analyzed according to age, sex, cause of injury, frequency and site of facial fractures, and soft tissue injuries. The chi-square tests were carried out for statistical analyses with a significance level of 5%.RESULTS: Of 232 patients with a mean age of 6.77±3.25 years, there were 134 males (57.8%) and 98 females (42.2%). The overall male to female ratio was 1.39:1. The most common causes of injuries were falls (56.5%) and motor vehicle accidents (16.8%). Incidence of falls decreased significantly with age (P<0.001). Dentoalveolar injuries (61.6%) and soft tissue injuries (57.3%) were more common than facial fractures (42.7%). Mandibular fractures (82.8%) were the most common facial fractures, and perioral or lip injuries were the most prevalent injuries in our patient population. There was a positive association between facial fractures and soft tissue injury (P<0.01) (odds ratio 0.26; confidence interval 0.15-0.46).CONCLUSION: Falls were the leading cause of maxillofacial trauma in our sample of children, and the most common site of fractures was the mandible.
Efficient String Matching Algorithm for Searching Large DNA and Binary Texts

Abstract:The exact string matching is essential in application areas such as Bioinformatics and Intrusion Detection Systems. Speeding-up the string matching algorithm will therefore result in accelerating the searching process in DNA and binary data. Previously, there are two types of fast algorithms exist, bit-parallel based algorithms and hashing algorithms. The bit-parallel based are efficient when dealing with patterns of short lengths, less than 64, but slow on long patterns. On the other hand, hashing algorithms have optimal sublinear average case on large alphabets and long patterns, but the efficiency not so good on small alphabet such as DNA and binary texts. In this paper, the authors present hybrid algorithm to overcome the shortcomings of those previous algorithms. The proposed algorithm is based on q-gram hashing with guaranteeing the maximal shift in advance. Experimental results on random and complete human genome confirm that the proposed algorithm is efficient on various pattern lengths and small alphabet.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Measles virus continues to cause morbidity and mortality despite the existence of a safe and efficacious vaccine. Measles is associated with induction of both a long-lived protective immune response and immunosuppression. To gain insight into immunological changes during measles virus infection, we examined gene expression in blood mononuclear cells from children with acute measles and children in the convalescent phase compared to uninfected control children. There were 13 significantly upregulated and 206 downregulated genes. Upregulated genes included the immune regulatory molecules interleukin 1β (IL-1β), CIAS-1, tumor necrosis factor alpha, PDE4B, PTGS2, IL-8, CXCL2, CCL4, ICAM-1, CD83, GOS-2, IER3 (IEX-1), and TNFAIP3 (A20). Plasma levels of IL-1β and IL-8 were elevated during measles virus infection. Downregulated genes mainly involved three gene ontology biological processes, transcription, signal transduction, and the immune response, and included IL-16 and cell surface receptors IL-4R, IL-6R, IL-7R, IL-27RA, CCR2, and CCR7. Most mRNAs had not returned to control values 1 month after discharge, consistent with prolonged immune response abnormalities during measles virus infection.
Incidence of Maxillofacial Injuries in the Emergency Department-Retrospective Study

Abstract:Introduction: Maxillofacial injuries are a common finding among the patients reporting to the Emergency Department. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the occurrence and characteristics of Oral and Maxillofacial injuries among the patients who reported to the Emergency Department at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bengaluru. Materials and method: The study was carried out retrospectively by analysing the medical records of patients who were presented with maxillofacial injuries, under the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery over a period of nine years. A total of 2831 patients were evaluated and segregated into different age groups. Standardized data was gathered on the number and location of lacerations, abrasions, fractures of facial bones, associated head injuries and treatment done. Result: It was found that the majority of the maxillofacial injuries reported to the emergency department are soft tissue injuries comprising of 71.49% of total cases among which 55.77% cases were with single or multiple lacerations and 15.72% cases with abrasions alone. The most common cause of facial injuries is road traffic accidents 56.8% followed by self-fall (33.8%) and assault (5.837%). The most common site of occurrence of laceration was noted to be forehead laceration (13.2%) followed by chin (10.97%), supraorbital (9.44%), upper lip (8.1%) and lower lip (5.97%). Among the fracture cases, Mid-facial fracture occurred in 58.84%, followed by mandibular fractures at 20.86% being the next most common occurrence. Conclusion: The results and understanding obtained from this study will be utilized to develop focused treatments for reducing the severity and frequency of maxillofacial trauma. Further, we believe that public awareness campaigns about enhanced safety measures can reduce the occurrence of maxillofacial injuries.

Abstract:Objectives: To report and analyze the pattern of maxillofacial injuries in trauma victims and to define the role of a maxillofacial surgeon in an emergency trauma care team. Materials and methods: Trauma patients reported and reporting to the casualty of a tertiaryhospital with facial injuries and other suspected concomitant injuries in the body were included in this study. The complete medical and radiographic records of each patient were reviewed and data was collected in a standard proforma in this 5-year clinical study (3 year of retrospective and 2 year of prospective study). The complete data related to the facial injuries and associated systemic trauma was recorded and statistical analysis conducted. Results: A total of 18,369 patients with trauma were admitted to the hospital from May 2018 to April 2023. Out of these, 11,277 (61.4%) were males and 7,092 (38.6%) were females. Seventy percent of the reported cases with trauma were in the age group of 14–40 years. The incidence of trauma during the monsoon season was highest (n = 7,927, 43%). The commonest etiological factor leading to trauma was road traffic accident (n = 4,510, 40%). Among facial injuries, the mandibular fractures (n = 1,821, 41%) were predominant. Conclusions: The management of polytrauma patients should be undertaken by a team of specialists which should include a maxillofacial surgeon as facial injuries were common. This data is essential in developing and assessing the preventative strategies aimed at decreasing the frequency of facial and other injuries.

Abstract:Maxillofacial trauma is any physical trauma to the facial region, commonly encountered by maxillofacial surgeons, and is often associated with high morbidity and so constitute quite a significant portion of the workload of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Maxillofacial injuries can occur as an isolated injury or may be associated with multiple injuries in other parts of the body. To assess the patterns, etiology, and treatment modalities of maxillofacial trauma in a teaching hospital in central India, over a 12-year period. Patients with maxillofacial trauma were identified using the department database and clinical records. 264 patients were identified with maxillofacial trauma in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery between January 2006 and December 2018. The study showed that there was a male preponderance in all age groups over female. Of the 264 patients with maxillofacial injuries, 83,33% had isolated lower face (mandibular) fractures, followed by midface fractures (10.60%) and panfacial fractures (6.06%). Road traffic accidents (87.12%) were the most common form of etiology for trauma followed by assaults (10.98%). Most trauma were treated with open reduction internal fixation (89%) than closed reduction (11%). The etiology and pattern of maxillofacial injuries reflect the trauma patterns within the community and can thus provide a guide to help design programs toward prevention and treatment.

Abstract:Introduction: This study is designed to outline the likely patterns of treatment modalities based on patient demographics and mechanism of injury in eastern region of India (industrial area). Objective: To evaluate the various treatment patterns in eastern region of India and for better understanding of providing patient care. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study by collecting data from the records of the patients who reported at our institution from 2018 to 2020. The types of the major procedures done at the department were classified based on the type and the area of the trauma. The data were tabulated using Excel sheet and projected in percentages. Later with statistical analysis by one-way ANOVA, the different groups were compared with SPSS version 20.0. Results: The total number of patients observed were 197. The gender distribution was M/F = 1.31:1. Comminuted mandibular fracture had the highest incidence with RTA (road traffic accident) being the most prevalent etiology, whereas no significant difference was found between the types of procedures performed and demography of the patients. Conclusion: Being a dominant industrial area (Jharkhand), it can be concluded that facial trauma is seen predominant in this part of eastern India due to road traffic accidents with heavy, high-speed vehicles and lack of awareness in using protective safety accessories. This study helped us evaluate the various major surgical procedures performed in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Such data would also act as an educational tool for trainees and for enhancing multidisciplinary meets.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to analyze patterns of maxillofacial fractures in children and adolescent in southeast of China,in a period of 10 years.MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, the medical records of 162 hospitalized patients under 18 years old were analyzed in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatology Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, China. Age, gender, etiology, site, and type of fracture, monthly distribution, weekly distribution, dental complications, and treatment were evaluated. The cases were divided into 3 age groups: group A: 0 to 6 years, group B: 7 to 12 years, and group C: 13 to 18 years.RESULTS: Three hundred thirty-four maxillofacial fractures in 162 patients younger than 18 years were analyzed. The male to female ratio was 2.24:1 and mean age of these patients was 9.85 years old . Falls were the leading cause of maxillofacial fractures.The most frequent fracture site was mandible. Most patients with maxillofacial fractures were treated by open reduction. And it was done more in adolescents than in children.CONCLUSIONS: Falls were the main reason for maxillofacial fracutres in childern, and traffic accidents was the leading cause in adolescent. Preventive measures should be applied to reduce occurrences of pediatric facial fractures .Children can not be left at home alone, and monitoring is very necessary when children play in the high place. The government can consider related e-bike driving skills training. Teenagers must pass the relevant electric vehicle test before they can drive. Make the law that the driver of e-bike must wear a safety helmet. Our study shows that open reduction was a good choice for pediatric facial fractures, but usually conservative treatment is a better choice for condylar fractures.

Maxillofacial Trauma in Females: A Retrospective Study

Abstract:Maxillofacial trauma in females is not widely reported. This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and the patterns of maxillofacial injuries in females and to determine the differences in these patterns among different causes. This retrospective study analyzed several variables, including demographic, social, injury-related, and treatment-related variables, and compared these variables in relation to the main etiologies of maxillofacial trauma. The main etiologies of maxillofacial injuries involving females were assault, followed by road traffic accidents, and falls. There were significant differences in relation to the 3 etiologies in age groups ( P = 0.002) and marital status ( P < 0.0001). There were significantly more soft tissue injuries in the assault group compared with the other groups ( P = 0.007). Associated injuries were significantly more with injuries caused by road traffic accidents ( P = 0.0009). Most females were victims of assault and violence. There were significant differences in relation to the etiology of trauma in terms of age groups, marital status, types of injury, and associated injuries. Most of the assaults were due to domestic violence.

Risk Factors for Acute-Level Hospital Course in Pediatric Craniofacial Fractures

Abstract:Purpose: The pediatric craniofacial trauma literature is limited to single institutions or short study periods. Herein, this study analyzes a national database over 10 years to delineate the epidemiology of pediatric craniofacial fractures and to identify risk factors for acute-level hospital course in the largest series to date. Methods: Utilizing the National Trauma Data Bank, pediatric craniofacial fractures admitted between 2010 and 2019 were identified. Descriptive analyses and multivariable regression were performed to identify risk factors for acute-level hospital course. Results: A total of 155,136 pediatric craniofacial fracture cases were reviewed, including cranial vault (49.0%), nasal (22.4%), midface (21.0%), mandibular (20.2%), and orbital floor fractures (13.7%). Midface and orbital floor fractures occurred commonly as multicraniofacial fractures. Cranial vault fractures were the most common among all age groups, but frequency declined with age. In contrast, facial fractures increased with age. Despite the inherent complexity of multicraniofacial trauma, isolated fractures remained a concern for acute-level hospital course.Cranial vault and midface fractures had an increased risk of intracranial injury and intensive care unit admission (P<0.001). Mandibular and midface fractures had an increased risk for cervical spine fracture and tracheostomy (P<0.001). Patient and injury-specific risk factors among the fractures with the strongest association for each outcome-cranial vault and mandible-were identified. Conclusions: The inherent limitations of prior studies-geographical biases, small cohorts, and short-term study periods-were addressed. Describing the independent contribution of each craniofacial fracture to the risk of acute-level hospital course outcomes can be employed to better optimize risk stratification, counseling, and management.

Abstract:AbstractIntroduction: Oromaxillofacial traumas comprise injuries to the face, jaws, or both that are largely caused by physical forces, foreign bodies, or burns; they include injury to any of the bony structures, skin, and soft tissues around the face. Maxillofacial trauma is related to human activity or mobility, so traffic accidents are the highest cause. During the Covid-19 pandemic, human activity was mostly at home with movement restrictions. This paper aims to describe the types of characteristics and management of oromaxillofacial traumas during covid-19 pandemic at the emergency room RSUP Dr.Hasan Sadikin Bandung Hospital.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate every maxillofacial trauma in patients treated by the oral surgeon in the emergency room at RSUP Dr.Hasan Sadikin Bandung Hospital. Maxillofacial trauma incidence records were taken directly from case reports department of oral and maxillofacial surgery emergency room patients from January 2020-December 2021. The variables considered were: patient age, gender, etiologies, sites, classifications, and management of the trauma. All the information found is then integrated into a table to be analyzed epidemiologically. Result: 177 maxillofacial trauma patients were registered in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery report. It was found that the gender ratio, female to male, is equal to 2.3: 7.6. The 18-36 age group accounted for the largest subgroup in both sexes. Motorcycle accidents accounted for as much as 80.22% of the etiology of the most common traumas. While dentoalveolar (28.22%) was the most common site of the fracture, followed by the mandible (23.31%). Injuries around the mouth make up the most portion (62.15%) regarding the area that is directly impacted by the injuries, followed by injuries to the face (18.64%) and injuries to the mouth and nose combined (6.21%). Among the 177 patients mentioned above, 10.17% were hospitalized.Conclusion: It can be concluded from this cross-sectional study that traffic accidents, mainly motorcycle crashes, are the primary cause of traumas, with males being more prone to accidents. Meanwhile, the dentoalveolar fracture was the most common site of fracture. For this reason, we might be better prepared with all the resources necessary to diagnose and treat patients with oromaxillofacial traumas in the future.
Pattern of Facial Laceration at Tertiary Care Centre in Eastern Nepal: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Introduction: Facial lacerations are a source of concern as these can be life threatening at times due to extensive haemorrhage and also leave lifelong scars. The objective of this study was to find out the pattern of facial lacerations in the Nepalese population visiting a tertiary care centre in eastern Nepal.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the maxillofacial trauma patients visiting the Emergency department and department of Dental Surgery at a tertiary care centre from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023. Ethical approval was taken from the Institutional Review Committee . All patients attending the Dental outpatient department and Emergency department for the management of facial laceration in the study period were included in the study.Results: Out of 236 patients, there were 199 (84.32%) male and 37 (15.67%) female patients. The most common age group was of 21-30 years 88 (37.29%) and Road Traffic Accidents 183 (77.54%) was the main aetiology. Facial lacerations and maxillofacial fractures both were seen in 98 (41.53%) patients. There were a total of 358 facial laceration sites among 236 patients and chin region 76 (21.22%) was the most common followed by forehead region 54 (15.08%).Conclusions: Facial lacerations were mostly seen in males, younger adults and road traffic accidents were the main aetiology for these injuries. Facial lacerations showed predominant T-shaped distribution with chin being the most common site.

[A Retrospective Study of 1 009 Patients with Oral and Maxillofacial Fresh Trauma].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the epidemiological characters of fresh maxillofacial fractures in hospitalized patients by the retrospective study. METHODS:From Jan. 2008 to Dec. 2013, a total of 1 009 patients with fresh maxillofacial fractures treated at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology were investigated. The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 21.0. RESULTS:The male and female ratio was 2.94:1 and 33.5% of the patients aged from 20 to 30 years. The most common cause of the fresh fracture was road traffic accidents (424 cases, 42.0%), followed by tumblings (250 cases, 24.8%) and violence (128 cases, 12.7%). The number of new fracture was increasing gradually in recent years. The patients were at peak of 20-29 years old. The mandibular fracture was the most frequently seen (536 cases, 53.1%), followed by zygomatic complex fractures (233 cases, 23.1%). The simple maxillary fracture was rare and usually combined with other fractures. Infraorbital nerve injury was the most common one in nerve injuries (144 cases). The most common associated injury was extremity injuries (77 cases), followed by thoracic injury (65 cases) and craniocerebral injury (57 cases). Associated injuries were mostly caused by car accidents (127 sites), followed by fall (32 sites). Logictic regression analysis showed that fall and tumbling were risk factors of mandibular and condylar fracture (OR > 1, P < 0.05), while age was a protective factor (OR > 1, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:Oral and maxillofacial fresh fractures most commonly occurred in young people, and the most common cause of fractures was road traffic accidents. Infraorbital nerve was involved frequently. The most common associated injuries was extremity injuries.
Analysis of Pediatric Maxillofacial Trauma in North China: Epidemiology, Pattern, and Management.

Abstract:Purpose: To analyze epidemiology, pattern, and management of pediatric maxillofacial trauma in North China. Patients and Methods: Clinical records of patients aged 0-18 years with maxillofacial trauma, from January 2008 to December 2016 were reviewed. 390 patients with an average age of 9.8 +/- 5.8 years (range: 8 months-18 years) and a male:female ratio of approximately 2:1 were included in the study. Epidemiological features (age, sex, etiology), characteristics of injuries (locations, types, associated injuries), treatments, and complications were analyzed. Results: Among 55 patients with soft tissue injuries, palate was the most common site (32.7%). Among 335 fracture cases, the most common age group was 16-18 years (25.1%); falls was the main cause (38.2%). Overall, there were 450 fractures (1.78 per capita), primarily mandible (69.3%), followed by zygoma (12.9%), maxilla (7.7%) and other sites. Multiple fractures occurred in 61.5% of patients. The most common site of mandibular fractures was condyle. The proportion of mid-face fractures to mandibular fractures increased with age (p < 0.01) and stabilized gradually after 12 (approximately 1.14:1). 77.5% of fractures were treated surgically. There was an independent association of surgical intervention with age older than 6 years old (p < 0.05). Absorbable plates were mainly applied to mandibular fractures in patients aged 0-7 and only 1 was removed because of insufficient fixation strength. Conclusions: The primary cause of pediatric maxillofacial fractures in North China was falls; traffic accidents led more multiple fractures and associated injuries. Palate and mandible were the most common sites of pediatric maxillofacial soft tissue injuries and fractures, respectively. A retrospective study of 1009 patients with oral and maxillofacial fresh trauma

Abstract:Objective To analyze the epidemiological characters of fresh maxillofacial fractures in hospitalized patients by the retrospective study.Methods From Jan.2008 to Dec.2013, a total of 1 009 patients with fresh maxillofacial fractures treated at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology were investigated.The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 21.0.Results The male and female ratio was 2.94:1 and 33.5％ of the patients aged from 20 to 30 years.The most common cause of the fresh fracture was road traffic accidents(424 cases, 42.0％), followed by tumblings(250 cases, 24.8％) and violence(128 cases, 12.7％).The number of new fracture was increasing gradually in recent years.The patients were at peak of 20-29 years old.The mandibular fracture was the most frequently seen(536 cases, 53.1％), followed by zygomatic complex fractures(233 cases, 23.1％).The simple maxillary fracture was rare and usually combined with other fractures.Infraorbital nerve injury was the most common one in nerve injuries(144 cases).The most common associated injury was extremity injuries (77 cases), followed by thoracic injury(65 cases) and craniocerebral injury(57 cases).Associated injuries were mostly caused by car accidents(127 sites), followed by fall(32 sites).Logictic regression analysis showed that fall and tumbling were risk factors of mandibular and condylar fracture (OR＞1, P＜0.05), while age was a protective factor(OR＞1, P＜0.05).Conclusions Oral and maxillofacial fresh fractures most commonly occurred in young people, and the most common cause of fractures was road traffic accidents.Infraorbital nerve was involved frequently.The most common associated injuries was extremity injuries.

Abstract:Structured Background Though the epidemiology of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) fractures has been well documented at urban hospitals, the characteristics of these fractures in rural hospitals have not been well studied. Purpose The purpose of this study is to report on the epidemiology of CMF fractures at a regional Level 1 trauma center serving a large rural population in central Illinois. Study Design This is a retrospective cohort study at a community-based regional tertiary referral center that serves a predominantly rural population. Inclusion criteria comprised patients with radiologically confirmed CMF fractures between 2015 and 2019. Patients with incomplete medical records were excluded. Predictor variable Predictor variables included demographics (age, admission source, race, and sex) and etiology of CMF fracture (assault/domestic violence (DV), all-terrain vehicle (ATV)/off-road, falls, farm-related, motor vehicle collisions (MVC), gunshot wound (GSW), and others). Main outcome variable The primary outcome variable was the CMF anatomic location including nasal bone, orbit, mandible, malar/maxillary, and other CMF fractures. Covariates The covariates are not applicable Analyses Descriptive statistics were used to summarize a sample of the population characteristics. Wilcoxon ranked sign tests and chi-squared tests of independence were used to assess for statistically significant associations between select variables of interest. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Results Between 2015 and 2019, a total of 2,334 patients presented to the emergency department with a CMF fracture. After applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, the final sample was composed of 1,844 patients for the management of 2,405 CMF fractures. The majority of patients were male(62.0%) and young adults (aged 18-39) had the highest number of CMF fractures (819) relative to all other age groups. The most common fracture etiology was fall(37.3%), and nasal bone fractures represented the most common fracture location(41.6%). Chi-squared analyses revealed statistically significant associations between the anatomic location of CMF fracture incurred, and differing categories of age, admission source, race, sex, and etiology. Conclusions and Relevance Our study shows that patients seen at our Midwestern Level 1 trauma center are more likely to present with nasal bone and malar/maxillary fractures due to falls. In studies based in urban centers, patients are likely to present with orbital and mandibular fractures due to falls and assault.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Expansion in road network, motorization, and urbanization in the country has been accompanied by a rise in road accidents leading to road traffic injuries (RTIs). Today RTIs are one of the leading causes of deaths, disabilities, and hospitalizations with severe socioeconomic costs across the world.OBJECTIVES: The following study analyses the: Age and sex distribution of injured in road traffic accidents (RTAs).Circumstances leading to RTA.Pattern and severity of injuries sustained in RTAs cases.DESIGN: Retrospective record-based study.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to audit retrospectively the circumstances, severity, and pattern of injury sustained by vehicle occupants presenting to the Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) hospital Hapur, for a period of one year. Data were collected using the case sheets of 347 patients from the medical records section of hospital and analyzed using SPSS computer software version 16.0. Results are interpreted in terms of percentage, mean, chi-square, and z-test.RESULTS: The pattern and severity of injuries sustained by 347 vehicle occupants admitted to the emergency department of SIMS, Hapur were retrospectively documented. Male victims 258 (74.35%) were more commonly involved than females 89 (25.65%) and majority of victims 141 (40.63%) were in age group of 20-30 years. Urban victims 222 (64.00%) outnumbered rural. The most frequently injured body regions were the extremities 499 (53.54%), followed by maxillofacial180(19.31%).. Out of total 802 external injuries, the most common type of injury was lacerations 307 (38.28%), abrasions 306 (38.15%)and followed by bruises 154 (19.20%). Multiple external injuries were more common on upper limb 216 (26.93%), lower limbs 210 (26.18%) and face 170 (21.20%), while crush injuries were more predominently seen in both the limbs. While laceration were common on face 120 (38.83%). Injuries to the chest 19 (2.36%), abdomen13 (1.61%), and spine 11 (1.36%) were seen in roughy equal proprotion of victims. The bones on right side 55 (55.55%) were more commonly fractured which is statistically significant. Skull injuries were mostly found on frontal 77 (47.53%), followed by parietal bone 33 (20.37%), mostly on right side.CONCLUSION: RTAs constitute a major public health problem in our setting. Urgent preventive measures targeting at reducing the occurrence of RTAs are necessary to reduce the morbidity and mortality resulting from these injuries.
Maxillofacial trauma and its management presenting in tertiary care hospital in Lahore during Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the patterns of maxillofacial injuries, etiology and their management during the pandemic of Covid-19 in a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: This is a single center, prospective cross-sectional study. Patients from all age groups who were presented at the Emergency room of Jinnah Hospital Lahore and managed by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department during 1st December 2020 till 31st January 2021 were included. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS for Windows, Version 20.0. Results: Total 202 patient were analyzed, 161 (79.7%) were male and 41 (20.3%) were females. Male to female ratio was 4:1. About fifty three percent of patients belonged to the age group 15-35 years. The most common cause was road traffic accidents (RTA), followed by fall. Eighty-three (41.1%) had only soft tissue injuries without any bony fracture and 119 (58.9%) had facial bones fractures. Zygomatic bone fracture was most common (53.8%) followed by mandible fracture (31.1%). Sixty-one out of 119 patients with fractures were treated with Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF). Three patients had complete loss of vision because of facial trauma. Only 56 (28%) patients were managed under General Anesthesia. Conclusion: During initial pandemic era, a large majority of patients presented with maxillofacial injuries were young male adult. The most common cause of maxillofacial trauma was RTAs. Soft tissue injuries were predominant followed by facial bone fractures and zygomatic bone was more frequent among the fracture cases. Covid-19 pandemic increased the difficulties faced in the management of maxillofacial trauma patients. Keywords: Covid -19, Maxillofacial Injuries, Tertiary Care Centers.

Abstract:The safety of children's living environment is affected by several factors. Safer living environments have been offered as one explanation to decreases in children's fractures. Earlier studies provide evidence of a decreasing trend in children's fractures in the past decades. The objective of this study was to investigate demographic and clinical features of paediatric maxillofacial fractures during three time periods. A retrospective cross-sectional single-centre study was designed. The study included 474 patients aged ≤ 15 years admitted to Helsinki University Hospital in Finland with maxillofacial fractures during 1980-1989, 1993-2002 and 2013-2018. Maxillofacial fractures increased by 25% during the study period. The increase was greater in boys (28%) than in girls (19%), and significant in age groups 0-5 years (71%) and 13-15 years (32%). Exclusively mandibular fractures decreased by 20%, while exclusively midfacial fractures increased more than four-fold and exclusively upper-third fractures five-fold. Being hit by object and falls from height increased more than two-fold. A temporary increase in assaults and decrease in bicycle accidents in the middle period of the study was observed. During the three decades, paediatric maxillofacial fractures have increased and both fracture type and underlying aetiology have changed. These findings reflect improvements in diagnostics, traffic safety, regulations and technology. The role of factors such as interpersonal violence and economic fluctuation on the incidence of childhood maxillofacial fractures is discussed.

Abstract:Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and patterns of maxillofacial fractures and the demographic characteristics of associated head and neck injuries. Materials and methods This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) in Irbid, northern Jordan. The data was obtained from the electronic clinical records of all patients in whom maxillofacial fractures and associated head and neck injuries were confirmed. Results During the five-year period captured by this retrospective study, 481 patients with 1026 maxillofacial fractures (equivalent to 2.13 fractures per patient) were treated. The sample comprised of 369 (76.7%) males and 112 (23.3%) females, resulting in a male/female ratio of 3.3:1. Majority of the patients were in the 21–30 age group and RTA was the most common cause of maxillofacial fractures, accounting for 299 (62.1%) of the analyzed cases. In 316 cases, maxillary fractures were accompanied by associated injuries, 132 (41.77%) of which were intracranial lesions, 80 (25.32%) were skull fractures, and 59 (18.67%) were cervical spine injuries. Conclusion Based on the obtained data, it can be concluded that the high occurrence of RTA emphasizes the significance of adhering to traffic laws and regulations, as individuals who have suffered serious head and neck injuries as a result of maxillofacial trauma may experience potentially fatal consequences. Thus, management for patients with maxillofacial fractures and concomitant traumas should be multidisciplinary and coordinated.
