Abstract:Eutrophication, mainly caused by the oversupply of nitrate (NO3−) and phosphate, has become a serious environmental problem in Xiangshan Bay (east China), but the sources of the nitrate are poorly understood. In this study, the estuarine distributions of dual stable isotopes (δ15N and δ18O) of NO3− measured in May 2012 were used in combination with concurrent measurements of salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and phosphate) to investigate NO3− sources and the processes that control NO3− distributions within the bay. In the lower bay, high concentrations of NO3− (up to 60.6 μmol L−1), an N/P ratio of 52, and low values of nitrate δ15N (δ15NNO3 = 5.7‰–6.7‰) and δ18O (δ18ONO3 = 1.8‰–3.5‰) indicate that NO3− in this area was likely from the Changjiang and Qiantangjiang rivers as well as local nitrification-associated inputs. In the upper bay, constituent concentrations and high values of δ15NNO3 (up to 8.8‰) and δ18ONO3 (up to 6.8‰) suggest that NO3− distributions here were controlled mainly by the mixing of coastal and fresh waters, phytoplankton assimilation, and inputs of riverine NO3−, possibly derived from manure and sewage. Spatial variations of Δ(15,18), the nitrate δ15N-to-δ18O anomaly, is possibly resulted from the different water residence times across the bay, which could in turn lead to different degrees of nitrification or variable amounts of NO3− from atmospheric deposition.

Abstract:Eutrophication caused by inputs of excess nitrogen（N） has become a serious environmental problem in Hangzhou Bay（China）,but the sources of this nitrogen are not well understood.In this study,the August 2019 distributions of salinity,nutrients [nitrate（NO 3 - ）,nitrite,ammonium,and phosphate],and the stable isotopic composition of NO 3 - (δ 15 N and δ 18 O) were used to investigate sources of dissolved inorganic nitrogen（DIN） to Hangzhou B ay.Spatial distributions of nitrate,salinity,and nitrate δ 18 O indicate that the Qiantang River,the Changjiang River,and nearshore coastal waters may all contribute nitrate to the bay.Based on the isotopic compositions of nitrate in these potential source waters and conservative mixing of nitrate in our study area,we suggest that the NO 3 - in Hangzhou B ay was likely derived mainly from soils,synthetic N fertilizer,and manure and sewage.End-member modeling indicates that in the upper half of the bay,the Qiantang River was a very important DIN source,possibly contributing more than 50% of DIN in the bay head area.In the lower half of the bay,DIN was sourced mainly from strongly intruding coastal water.DIN coming directly from the Changjiang River made a relatively small contribution to Hangzhou Bay DIN in August 2019.
Using Isotopes to Identify the Sources of Organic Carbon and Nitrogen in Surface Sediment in Shallow Lakes Alongside Poyang Lake

Abstract:Water exchange in shallow lakes alongside Poyang Lake is weak because of sluggish water flow, and thus these lakes are susceptible to the effects of human activities and nutrient oversupply. Therefore, it is meaningful to study the sources of organic matter in these lakes, which is supposed to provide theoretical basis for the control of eutrophication of the lakes. The sources of organic matter in surface sediment in shallow lakes (Bang, Sha, Dahuchi, and Zhu lakes) alongside Poyang Lake and urban lakes (Qingshan and Xiang lakes) in Nanchang City were investigated by measuring the δ15N and δ13C values, total organic carbon and total organic nitrogen contents, and C/N ratios of sedimented organic matter (SOM). The δ15N, δ13C, and C/N ratios indicated that SOM in Sha and Dahuchi lakes mostly originated in phytoplankton, SOM in Bang and Zhu lakes was supplied by phytoplankton and soil organic matter, SOM in Qingshan Lake was strongly affected by sewage organic matter, and SOM in Xiang Lake mainly came from aquatic macrophytes. The results demonstrate that stable isotopes in SOM in lakes can be used to discriminate between different sources of organic material.

Abstract:PurposeLake sediment is an important carbon reservoir, and knowledge of organic carbon distribution and its controlling factors can provide insights into the effects of natural processes and anthropogenic pressures on carbon dynamics in drainage basin.Materials and methodsHere, we combined total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and their stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) with a Bayesian isotope mixing model to identify the origin of organic matter (OM) and the key factors influencing OM accumulation in surface sediments from Lake Yangzong (YZ) and Lake Chenghai (CH), located on the Yunnan Plateau, SW China.Results and discussionThe δ13C values in surface sediments from YZ showed a gradual increase from south to north, with an asynchronous decrease in δ15N, suggesting an increasing contribution of pollutants originating from the Yangzong River. In contrast, CH was characterized by a rapid decrease in δ13C and an increase in δ15N values occurring in the deepest part of the lake, indicating that water depth may play an important role in OM accumulation in the lake. Allochthonous OM (C3 plant and soil OM) was the dominant sediment OM source for surface sediments in YZ, while substantial contributions of OM originated from plankton, soil OM, and sewage in CH.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that trophic state and terrestrial input may exert large impact on OM accumulation in deep lakes, which results in different distribution patterns of OM sources.

Abstract:Particulate organic carbon (POC) sources, which regulate dissolved organic carbon, sediment organic carbon, and inorganic carbon via deposition, degradation, and mineralization, play an important role in lake ecosystems. Linear or Bayesian algorithms on isotope and n-alkanes have been widely used to identify the source proportion of organic carbon. However, the applicability of these methods is ambiguous because of the unilateral advantages of each model and trace factors. To test the applicability of the various methods for identifying POC sources, we analyzed dual isotopes and n-alkanes in surface water samples of Lake Taihu, and Multi-source mixing model and Bayesian mixing model were used to distinguish between endogenous and exogenous contributions. Carbon isotope presented a clear advantage in West Taihu (-21.85 ± 0.78‰) and Meiliang Bay (-22.61 ± 1.35‰); nitrogen isotope also showed high values in Meiliang Bay (9.76 ± 0.92‰). The majority of the lake was dominated by short-chain n-alkanes, except for East Taihu Lake (dominated by medium-chain n-alkanes) and areas with riverine input (dominated by long-chain n-alkanes). Different principles between the Bayesian mixing model (based on the Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm) and the Multi-source mixing model (based on linear estimation) caused discrepancies in the estimations of source contributions. But the fraction of chemical compounds during the migration process, and the overlap of potential sources play important role in the inconsistency of results. The estimations from the different models were consistent in indicating the dominance of endogenous organic carbon in Lake Taihu (mean of 60.09 ± 19.60%), particularly in the north and western regions (West Taihu, Meiliang Bay, and Southwest Taihu). This was likely due to algal aggregation influenced by human activities and climatic factors.

Abstract:Signatures of stable isotope ratios have previously been used to trace the source and transport of particulate organic matter (POM) in freshwater and marine ecosystems. In this study, water columns were collected at 22 sites in the littoral zone of Lake Taihu in 2014 to investigate the distribution and concentration of nutrients and the stable isotope signatures of POM, and their potential interrelation. Generally, mean concentration of nitrogen forms (NH4+-N) showed substantial variation, probably because they had received large amounts of wastewater from various local industrial enterprises. Source analysis by stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios showed that the main POM sources were phytoplankton. Contrasting correlations were obtained between δ15N and N concentrations in effluent river mouths when compared with influent river mouths. In effluent river mouths, there was a significant positive correlation between δ15N and nitrogen concentration (total nitrogen and ammonia-nitrogen), in contrast with the negative correlation in influent river mouths. According to these results, more factors should be taken into consideration when stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of POM are used to assess the feeding relationship between consumers and prey, as well as the energy flow pathways that support the lake pelagic food webs.

Abstract:Identification and quantification of sources of nitrate (NO3–) in freshwater lakes provide useful information for management of eutrophication and improving water quality in lakes. Dual δ15N- and δ18O-NO3– isotopes and a Bayesian isotope mixing model were applied to identify sources of NO3– and estimate their proportional contributions to concentrations of NO3– in Tai Lake, China. In waters of Tai Lake, values for δ15N-NO3– ranged from 3.8 to 10.1‰, while values of δ18O ranged from 2.2 to 12.0‰. These results indicated that NO3– was derived primarily from agricultural and industrial sources. Stable isotope analysis in R called SIAR model was used to estimate proportional contributions from four potential NO3– sources (agricultural, industrial effluents, domestic sewage, and rainwater). SIAR output revealed that agricultural runoff provided the greatest proportion (50.8%) of NO3– to the lake, followed by industrial effluents (33.9%), rainwater (8.4%), and domestic sewage (6.8%). Contributions of those primary sources of NO3– to sub-regions of Tai Lake varied significantly (p < 0.05). For the northern region of the lake, industrial source (35.4%) contributed the greatest proportion of NO3–, followed by agricultural runoff (27.4%), domestic sewage (21.3%), and rainwater (15.9%). Whereas for the southern region, the proportion of NO3– contributed from agriculture (38.6%) was slightly greater than that contributed by industry (30.8%), which was similar to results for nearby inflow tributaries. Thus, to improve water quality by addressing eutrophication and reduce primary production of phytoplankton, NO3– from both nonpoint agricultural sources and industrial point sources should be mitigated.Graphical abstractᅟ

Abstract:Identification and quantification of allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon (OC) in large and shallow lakes are crucial for knowledge of OC burial and recycling behaviors, as well as sustainable management practices. However, quantitative methods to estimate the contributions from various OC sources are still limited. In this study, we analyzed distribution patterns and δ13C signatures of mid- and long-chain n-alkanes from aquatic plants, riverine sediment, and surface sediments from a typically large and shallow Lake Wuliangsu in the Hetao Irrigation District, China. The results indicate that n-alkanes among submerged macrophytes, emergent plants, and riverine sediment show unique distribution patterns and δ13C signatures, supporting the practicability of identification and quantification of OC sources by end-member mixing models of n-alkanes’ distribution patterns and 13C values. Our results also suggest that introducing δ13C values into the end-member mixing models could effectively reduce the uncertainty, as n-alkane distribution patterns might be modified by different species, habitat environments, and potential OC degradation. In the case of Lake Wuliangsu, the model results demonstrate that the riverine sourced OC from the main channel has decreased during southward transport, indicating that Lake Wuliangsu serves as an important trap and sink for OC transported from the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The model results also show a predominant contribution of the autochthonous OC to sediments in Lake Wuliangsu, with open-water areas dominated by submerged macrophyte-sourced OC and the other areas by emergent plant-sourced OC. Higher productivities of submerged macrophytes are mainly modulated by increases in water depth, water transparency, and nutrient concentrations, while higher productivities of emergent plants are mainly associated with increasing nutrient concentrations. To improve the ecological conditions and OC burial of Lake Wuliangsu, it is necessary to manage the quality of the inflowing water from the agricultural farmland, as well as the preservation of the water body from current paludification.

Abstract:Nitrate is one of the most common pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, particularly in highly vulnerable karst aquifers. In Caohai Lake, an important karst wetland in southwestern China, karst surface water and groundwater are important recharge water sources, and nitrates flow into the wetland along with the surface water and groundwater, degrading the wetland water quality. Therefore, identifying the sources of nitrate in the surface water and groundwater in the Caohai catchment is of great significance to the protection of the wetland water environment. In this study, the nitrate concentrations, hydrochemistry and multiple stable isotope ratios (δ18O-H2O, δD-H2O, δ15N-NO3− and δ18O-NO3−) were used to identify the sources and fate of the NO3− in the groundwater and inflowing rivers around the Caohai wetland. The results showed that the NO3− concentrations in the groundwater samples from the southern side exceeded the WHO limit during the wet season, while other samples did not exceed the limit. The mean concentrations of NO3− in groundwater were higher than those in the inflowing river water, and NO3− concentrations decreased in the order of wet season>dry season>normal season in the groundwater and inflowing rivers. The hydrochemistry and multiple isotope ratios suggest that the nitrate transformation was dominated by nitrification processes, while denitrification had an influence on the transformation of NO3− (as evidenced by isotopes) in groundwater during the dry season. According to the analyses based on a stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR), sewage and manure were the main sources of NO3− in the groundwater, while sewage, manure and chemical fertilizer were the major sources of NO3− in the inflowing river water; therefore, the scientific use of farmland fertilizers and the treatment of domestic sewage should be strengthened to safeguard groundwater quality and control the NO3− concentrations in rivers.

Abstract:Purpose Previous studies have shown a positive correlation between concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total organic carbon (TOC) in lake sediments. However, with respect to the complex organic matter in recent sediments, it is still unclear which part of TOC plays a key role in controlling PAHs distributions in natural sediments. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between PAHs and TOC components of different origins in lake sediments. Materials and methods Sediment cores from three Chinese lakes with different trophic conditions—Lakes Bosten, Dianchi, and Poyang—were collected using a piston core sampler. The cores were sectioned into 1- or 2-cm intervals immediately after collection and transported on ice to the laboratory where they were stored at −20 °C. The subsamples were freeze-dried and ground with a mortar and pestle for analyses. PAHs were analyzed by GC–MS and TOC was determined with a PE elemental analyzer after the removal of carbonates. Rock-Eval 6 pyrolysis technique was used to deconvolute the TOC in the sediments into free and volatile hydrocarbons (S1), kerogen-derived hydrocarbons (S2), and residual carbon (RC); S2 was further separated into thermal less stable macromolecular organic matter (S2a) and high molecular weight kerogens (S2b). Results and discussion Positive correlations between TOC and PAHs were observed in these lakes. Results show that the more labile, minor components of TOC (S1 and S2a) played a more important role in controlling PAH distributions than the major components of TOC (S2b and RC), probably due to the different accessibilities of the organic components. The algae-derived organic carbon had a greater influence on the distribution of low molecular weight PAHs than that of high molecular weight PAHs in sediments. This suggests that PAHs scavenging in the water column by algae is mainly targeted at low molecular weight PAHs, and that preferential scavenging of low molecular weight PAHs may be due to the different atmospheric phases of low and high molecular weight PAHs. Conclusions Algal scavenging had an important influence on the PAH concentrations, especially the lower molecular weight PAH concentrations in the lake sediments. The results suggest that PAH concentrations and their molecular ratios in lake sediments may neither accurately represent the pollution history of PAHs, nor the origin PAHs source differentiation. This study has significant implications for understanding the roles of organic matter in affecting the distributions of PAHs and other similar organic pollutants in lake sediments.
Source apportionment of organic carbon and nitrogen in sediments from river and lake in the highly urbanized Changjiang Delta

Abstract:While the impact of human activities on organic matter pollution is recognized, how these impacts vary seasonally in the Changjiang Delta needs further investigation. This study addresses this gap by investigating seasonal variations in organic matter sources and ecological responses to human activities in Changjiang Delta sediments. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotopic compositions of surface sediments collected from the Taipu River and Dalian Lake wetland were analyzed. Both water bodies exhibited similar seasonal trends for TOC and TN, with the Taipu River containing an average of 0.46% and 0.03% higher concentrations of TOC and TN, respectively, compared to Dalian Lake. Additionally, the organic index (OI) and organic nitrogen (ON) index were elevated in both water bodies during the wet season. Sediments from Dalian Lake remained uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, while those from the Taipu River were generally classified as moderately to heavily contaminated. Stable isotope analysis identified terrestrial C 3 plants (averaging 25.5%), C 4 plants (averaging 16.0%), and municipal wastewater (averaging 16.0%) as the main contributors to organic matter in the sediments. These findings suggest that terrestrial plant material and municipal wastewater are key targets for managing organic matter contamination in the Changjiang Delta. Implementing strategic land-use planning and targeted interventions to minimize these inputs can significantly improve water quality and ecosystem health.

Abstract:The long-term accumulation, burial and release of nutrients, such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in lacustrine sediments are responsible for the global lake eutrophication. Interpretation of the spatiotemporal sedimentary record of nutrients (C, N, and P) in contrasting trophic level of lakes is helpful for understanding the evolutionary process of water eutrophication. Based on the radiochronology of 210Pbex and 137Cs, a comparative study of spatial and temporal concentrations, burial of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), the sources of organic matter were conducted using sediment cores from two plateau lakes Dianchi (DC) and Fuxian (FX) of SW China. Results showed that concentrations and burial of C, N, and P in sediments of DC, a shallow hypertrophic lake with the maximum depth of 5.8 m, were both higher than those in FX, an oligotrophic deep lake with the maximum depth of 155.0 m. For both lakes the molar ratio of TOC/TN increased in the sediments moving from north to south. The values of TOC/TN molar ratios increased over time in DC and were higher than in FX. The extremely high values of TOC/TN appeared in the central and southern parts of FX, indicating the impacts of accumulation effect and sediment focusing in the deeper region and indirect supplement from the Lake Xingyun (XY), an adjoining lake connected with FX via the Gehe River. Time-integrated sources identification in DC indicated the contribution of allochthonous sources was dominant over the past few decades, which contributed to the increased trophic level of the lake. The comparison of relationships of carbon accumulation rates (CAR), nitrogen accumulation rates (NAR), and phosphorous accumulation rates (PAR), the ratios of N/P and the utilizations of N and P fertilizer between DC and FX implied that both of N and P inputs should be limited for reducing the trophic level, but N control was predominant in comparison with P for both lakes. The results indicated that caution is required in plateau lakes to limit transition from oligotrophic to eutrophic in these lakes.

Abstract:The sources of P and N in water-carrying lakes include exogenous input and endogenous release. However, the influence of pollution from different sources on the dynamic distribution of N and P at the sediment-water interface in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in dynamic distribution characteristics of P compounds and N elements in Lake Jiaogang, a major water-carrying lake in eastern China. Four functional regions with different types of pollutant sources and different kinds of aquatic plants were selected to study the distribution of total P (TP), inorganic P, organic P, ammonium (NH 4 + –N), and nitrate (NO 3 − –N). The results revealed that regions with internal-source pollutants contained the highest concentration of TP, Ca–P, and Fe–P with high concentrations. L–P, Al–P, mostly organic P, and soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP), the region with internal-source pollutants were lower than that with the imported-source pollutant. The concentration of dissolved NH 4 + –N showed high in regions with imported-source pollutants, however, in regions with internal-source pollutants, the dissolved NO 3 − –N was with the highest concentration. Overall, P from upstream was still dominant in the sediments despite uptake by the aquatic plants. SRP showed high concentration in regions with imported-source pollutants due to the imported pollution and the improved bioavailability by plant root exudates. Feces and feed residues from aquatic livestock breeding resulted in the highest concentration of TN, NH 4 + –N, and dissolved NO 3 −– N in the sediments of the region with internal-source pollutants. High concentrations of dissolved NH 4 + –N were due to the input of N from imported source pollutants. This study provides insights into the contributions of P and N to the eutrophication of the water-carrying lake.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3(-)) pollution is a severe problem in aquatic systems in Taihu Lake Basin in China. A dual isotope approach (δ(15)NNO3(-) and δ(18)ONO3(-)) was applied to identify diffused NO3(-) inputs in a stream in an agricultural field at the basin in 2013. The site-specific isotopic characteristics of five NO3(-) sources (atmospheric deposition, AD; NO3(-) derived from soil organic matter nitrification, NS; NO3(-) derived from chemical fertilizer nitrification, NF; groundwater, GW; and manure and sewage, M&S) were identified. NO3(-) concentrations in the stream during the rainy season [mean±standard deviation (SD)=2.5±0.4mg/L] were lower than those during the dry season (mean±SD=4.0±0.5mg/L), whereas the δ(18)ONO3(-) values during the rainy season (mean±SD=+12.3±3.6‰) were higher than those during the dry season (mean±SD=+0.9±1.9‰). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that mixing with atmospheric NO3(-) resulted in the high δ(18)O values during the rainy season, whereas NS and M&S were the dominant NO3(-) sources during the dry season. A Bayesian model was used to determine the contribution of each NO3(-) source to total stream NO3(-). Results showed that reduced N nitrification in soil zones (including soil organic matter and fertilizer) was the main NO3(-) source throughout the year. M&S contributed more NO3(-) during the dry season (22.4%) than during the rainy season (17.8%). AD generated substantial amounts of NO3(-) in May (18.4%), June (29.8%), and July (24.5%). With the assessment of temporal variation of diffused NO3(-) sources in agricultural field, improved agricultural management practices can be implemented to protect the water resource and avoid further water quality deterioration in Taihu Lake Basin.

Abstract:Stoichiometry determines the key characteristics of organisms and ecosystems on a global scale and provides strong instructions on the fate of sediment carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (C-N-P) during the sedimentation process, contributing to the Earth's C-N-P balance. However, the mechanisms underlying C–N–P stoichiometry in response to intensive human activity and organic matter sources remain underexplored, especially in freshwater ecosystems. This study identifies the temporal patterns of C-N-P stoichiometry, reveals the inner driving factors, and clarifies its impact path, especially in eutrophication (the late 1970s). The results revealed that sediment RCP and RNP increased significantly and were controlled by TCAR and TNAR, respectively, indicating the direct impact of burial rate on C-N-P stoichiometry. Based on redundancy analysis and the STM model, autochthonous origin, GDP, and population had positive effects on sediment TCAR, TNAR, and TPAR, which, in turn, affected RCN, RCP, and RNP. Organic matter sources and human activities have a significant influence on RCN, RCP, and RNP, possibly regulated by the variation of TCAR and TNAR. Autochthonous origin had an indirect positive impact on RCN and RCP through the mediating effect of TCAR. Similarly, through the mediating effect of TNAR, it had an indirect negative impact on RCN and an indirect positive impact on RNP. This study showed that TCAR, TNAR, TPAR, GDP, autochthonous, allochthonous and population better explained the changes in RCN, RCP, and RNP over a-hundred-year deposition, highlighting an in-depth understanding of the dynamic change mechanism of sediment C-N-P stoichiometry during the lake deposition process.

Identification of nitrogen sources and cycling along freshwater river to estuarine water continuum using multiple stable isotopes

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) transport from terrene to river water is a major source of N in estuarine water, contributing to eutrophication, harmful algal blooms and hypoxia. However, there is a lack of holistic and systematic research on N sources and transformation in the freshwater river-estuarine water continuum. In this study, multiple stable isotope signatures of nitrate (δ15N-NO3−, δ18O-NO3−), ammonium (δ15N-NH4+), and suspended particulate nitrogen (δ15N-PN) were employed to differentiate the sources and transformations of N and calculate the proportional contribution of NO3− sources by Bayesian model in Qiantang River (QTR)-Hangzhou Bay (HZB) during the dry season. The results showed that: (1) Evidences from isotopic signatures suggested the occurrence of N transformation instead of conservation mixing. (2) Negative correlations between the δ15N-NO3− and δ15N-NH4+, the relationships between δ15N-NO3− and NO3−-N concentrations, and smaller δ18O-NO3− values were found in almost all surface water, indicating that nitrification was the dominant N transformation. (3) In addition to the nitrification evidence, significant correlations between δ15N-PN and δ15N-NH4+ revealed that assimilation and nitrification jointly affected the N transformation in the QTR's upstream, midstream and lower tributaries, which are unaffected or less affected by tides. (4) The lack of a relationship between δ15N-NO3− and δ18O-NO3− or ln(NO3−) indicated that denitrification was weakened in all surface waters. (5) Qualitative identification of N pollution sources and quantitative calculation of NO3−-N potential sources revealed that sewage was the dominant source of N in the QTR and the HZB, while the internal nitrification was also important factor in determining N levels. This study provided evidence to further understand the sources, transport, and transformation of N in the river-estuary continuum, which deepens the understanding of the land-ocean integrated management of N contaminant.

Abstract:The organic matter of lake sediment plays an important role in paleolimnological reconstruction. Here, we report a detailed study of organic matter components (Corg%, N%, δ13C, δ15N) in a dated sediment core of Hulun Lake in northern China. Multiple mixing models based on the stoichiometric ratios and stable isotopic compositions were applied to quantify the contributions of organic matter sources in lake sediment. The results show that the organic matter in the sediments from Hulun Lake mainly comes from terrestrial organic matter: the proportion of terrestrial organic matter is more than 80%. The results of the SIAR mixing model further reveal that the proportions of terrestrial C3 plants-derived organic matter, soil organic matter, and lake plankton-derived organic matter were 76.0%, 13.9%, and 10.1%, respectively. The organic matter content of lake sediment from terrestrial sources began to increase significantly from 1980 onward, which is consistent with the growth in overgrazing in the Hulun Lake basin. The content of organic matter from endogenous lake-derived sources began to increase significantly after 2000 due to the nutrients gradually becoming concentrated in lake water, indicating that the reduction in rivers’ discharge and the downgrade of the lake water level were the immediate causes of the lake’s environmental deterioration during this period.

Distribution Characteristics of Organic Matter and Total Nitrogen in Sediments of Lake Wuliangsuhai

Abstract:Lake Wuliangsuhai is one of the representative inland freshwater lakes in grassland areas of China, and its shrinking and eutrophication is becoming more serious. The study on the ecological and environmental effects of the shrinking and eutrophication revealed that the total nitrogen (TN) content in the surface sediment of the lake had an obvious differentiation both in longitudinal and in latitudinal direction, and had a significant correlation with organic matter content. The mean C/N ratio of the sediment ranged from 12.07 to 19.95, which meant that the organic matter was mainly come from the hydrophytes of the lake, and the eutrophication of the lake was mostly caused by its internal load. Both TN and organic matter had a clear grain-size effect in different fractions of grain sizes of surface sediment, and their contents in IV (< 63 microm) were as 3.1 - 7.6 and 2.5 - 8.0 times as those in I (>250 microm), respectively.

Abstract:Riverine nitrogen pollution is ubiquitous and attracts considerable global attention. Nitrate is commonly the dominant total nitrogen (TN) constituent in surface and ground waters; thus, stable isotopes of nitrate (δ15N/δ18O-NO3-) are widely used to differentiate nitrate sources. However, δ15N/δ18O-NO3- approach fails to present a holistic perspective of nitrogen pollution for many coastal-plain river networks because diverse nitrogen species contribute to high TN loads. In this study, multiple isotopes, namely, δ15N/δ18O-NO3-, δ18O-H2O, δ15N-NH4+, δ15N-PN, and δ15Nbulk/δ18O/SP-N2O in the Wen-Rui Tang River, a typical coastal-plain river network of Eastern China, were investigated to identify transformation processes and sources of nitrogen. Then, a stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR) model-TN source apportionment method was developed to quantify the contributions of different nitrogen sources to riverine TN loads. Results showed that nitrogen pollution in the river network was serious with TN concentrations ranging from 1.71 to 8.09 mg/L (mean ± SD: 3.77 ± 1.39 mg/L). Ammonium, nitrate, and suspended particulate nitrogen were the most prominent nitrogen components during the study period, constituting 45.4 %, 28.9 %, and 19.9 % of TN, respectively. Multiple hydrochemical and isotopic analysis identified nitrification as the dominant N cycling process. Biological assimilation and denitrification were minor N cycling processes, whereas ammonia volatilization was deemed negligible. Isotopic evidence and SIAR modeling revealed municipal sewage was the dominant contributor to nitrogen pollution. Based on quantitative estimates from the SIAR model, nitrogen source contributions to the Wen-Rui Tang River watershed followed: municipal sewage (40.6 %) ≈ soil nitrogen (39.5 %) > nitrogen fertilizer (9.7 %) > atmospheric deposition (2.8 %) during wet season; and municipal sewage (59.1 %) > soil nitrogen (30.4 %) > nitrogen fertilizer (4.1 %) > atmospheric deposition (1.0 %) during dry season. This study provides a deeper understanding of nitrogen dynamics in eutrophic coastal-plain river networks, which informs strategies for efficient control and remediation of riverine nitrogen pollution.
