Abstract:Attempts to understand the molecular structure of water were first made well over a century ago. Looking back at the various attempts, it is illuminating to see how these were conditioned by the state of knowledge of chemistry and physics at the time and the experimental and theoretical tools then available. Progress in the intervening years has been facilitated by not only conceptual and theoretical advances in physics and chemistry but also the development of experimental techniques and instrumentation. Exploitation of powerful computational methods in interpreting what at first sight may seem impenetrable experimental data has led us to the consistent and detailed picture we have today of not only the structure of liquid water itself and how it changes with temperature and pressure but also its interactions with other molecules, in particular those relevant to water’s role in important chemical and biological processes. Much remains to be done in the latter areas, but the experimental and computational techniques that now enable us to do what might reasonably be termed “liquid state crystallography” have opened the door to make possible further advances. Consequently, we now have the tools to explore further the role of water in those processes that underpin life itself—the very prospect that inspired Bernal to develop his ideas on the structure of liquids in general and of water in particular.

The Second Derivative of Fullerene C60 (SD-C60) and Biomolecular Machinery of Hydrogen Bonds: Water-Based Nanomedicine

Abstract:The human body contains 60-70% water, depending on age. As a body fluid, it is not only a medium in which physical and chemical processes take place, but it is also one of the active mediators. Water is the richest substance with non-covalent hydrogen bonds. Water molecules, by themselves (in vacuum), are diamagnetic but when organized into clusters, they become diamagnetic or paramagnetic. Also, biomolecules (DNA, collagen, clathrin, and other proteins) have non-covalent hydrogen bonds in their structure. The interaction, as well as signal transmission, between water and biomolecules is achieved through the vibrations of covalent and non-covalent hydrogen bonds, which determine the state and dynamics of conformational changes in biomolecules. Disruptive conformational changes in biomolecules, cells, and tissues lead to their dysfunctionality, so they are a frequent cause of many disorders and diseases. For example, the rearrangement of hydrogen bonding due to mitochondrial disease mutation in cytochrome bc1 disturbs heme bH redox potential and spin state. In order to prevent and repair the dysfunctional conformational changes, a liquid substance was developed based on the second derivative of the C60 molecule (SD-C60), which has classical and quantum properties. The characterization of SD-C60 by UV-VIS-NIR, FTIR, TEM, and AFM/MFM was performed and it is shown that SD-C60 water layers generate vibrations with near-zero phase dispersion which are transmitted through Fibonacci's water chains to biomolecules. In comparison with previously published SD-C60 derivate (3HFWC, size until 10 nm, and 1-5 water layers), the improved formulation (3HFWC-W, size 10-25 nm, and 6-9 water layers) showed multiplied cytotoxic activity against melanoma cell lines of different aggressiveness. Apart from this, the mode of action was preserved and based on an induction of senescence rather than cell death. Importantly, high selectivity towards malignant phenotypes was detected. Observed effects can be ascribed to a machinery of hydrogen bonds, which are generated in SD-C60 and transmitted through water to biomolecules. This approach may open a new field in science and healthcare-a "water-based nanomedicine".

Abstract:The biophysics of water, has been debated over more than a century. Although its importance is still underestimated, significant breakthroughs occurred in recent years. The influence of protein condensation on water availability control was documented, new findings on water-transport proteins emerged, and the way water molecules rearrange to minimize free energy at interfaces was deciphered, influencing membrane thermodynamics. The state of knowledge continued to progress in the field of deep-sea marine biology, highlighting unknown effects of high hydrostatic pressure and/or temperature on interactions between proteins and ligands in extreme environments, and membrane structure adaptations. The role of osmolytes in protein stability control under stress is also discussed here in relation to fish egg hydration/buoyancy. The complexity of water movements within the cell is updated, all these findings leading to a better view of their impact on many cellular processes. The way water flow and osmotic gradients generated by ion transport work together to produce the driving force behind cell migration is also relevant to both marine biology and cancer research. Additional common points concern water dynamic changes during the neoplastic transformation of cells and tissues, or embryo development. This could improve imaging techniques, early cancer diagnosis, and understanding of the molecular and physiological basis of buoyancy for many marine species.

Abstract:Observations and interpretation of extragalactic rotational and rovibrational H2 emission are reviewed. Direct observations of H2 lines do not trace bulk H2 mass, but excitation rate. As such, the H2 lines are unique diagnostics, if the excitation mechanism can be determined, which generally requires high-quality spectroscopy and suitable additional data. The diagnostic power of the H2 lines is illustrated by two cases studies: H2 purely rotational line emission from the disk of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC891 and high resolution imaging and spectroscopy of H2 vibrational line emision from the luminous merger NGC6240.

Abstract:Rapid developments in both fundamental science and modern technology that target water-related problems, including the physical nature of our planet and environment, the origin of life, energy production via water splitting, and water purification, all call for a molecular-level understanding of water. This invokes relentless efforts to further our understanding of the basic science of water. Current challenges to achieve a molecular picture of the peculiar properties and behavior of water are discussed herein, with a particular focus on the structure and dynamics of bulk and surface water, the molecular mechanisms of water wetting and splitting, application-oriented research on water decontamination and desalination, and the development of complementary techniques for probing water at the nanoscale.

Abstract:This review is devoted to discussing recent progress on the structure, thermodynamic, reactivity, and dynamics of water and aqueous systems confined within different types of nanopores, synthetic and biological. Currently, this is a branch of water science that has attracted enormous attention of researchers from different fields interested to extend the understanding of the anomalous properties of bulk water to the nanoscopic domain. From a fundamental perspective, the interactions of water and solutes with a confining surface dramatically modify the liquid’s structure and, consequently, both its thermodynamical and dynamical behaviors, breaking the validity of the classical thermodynamic and phenomenological description of the transport properties of aqueous systems. Additionally, man-made nanopores and porous materials have emerged as promising solutions to challenging problems such as water purification, biosensing, nanofluidic logic and gating, and energy storage and conversion, while aquaporin, ion channels, and nuclear pore complex nanopores regulate many biological functions such as the conduction of water, the generation of action potentials, and the storage of genetic material. In this work, the more recent experimental and molecular simulations advances in this exciting and rapidly evolving field will be reported and critically discussed.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Phosphorene, a newly fabricated two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, has emerged as a promising material for biomedical applications with great potential. Nonetheless, understanding the wetting and diffusive properties of bio-fluids on phosphorene which are of fundamental importance to these applications remains elusive. In this work, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the structural and dynamic properties of water on both pristine and strained phosphorene. Our simulations indicate that the diffusion of water molecules on the phosphorene surface is anisotropic, with strain-enhanced diffusion clearly present, which arises from strain-induced smoothing of the energy landscape. The contact angle of water droplet on phosphorene exhibits a non-monotonic variation with the transverse strain. The structure of water on transverse stretched phosphorene is demonstrated to be different from that on longitudinal stretched phosphorene. Moreover, the contact angle of water on strained phosphorene is proportional to the quotient of the longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients of the interfacial water. These findings thereby offer helpful insights into the mechanism of the wetting and transport of water at nanoscale, and provide a better foundation for future biomedical applications of phosphorene.

Abstract:Water is perhaps the most ubiquitous, and the most essential, of any molecule on earth. Despite decades of research, however, water's puzzling properties are not understood and 63 anomalies that distinguish water from other liquids remain unsolved. We present evidence from experiments and computer simulations supporting the hypothesis that water displays polyamorphism, i.e., water separates into two distinct liquid phases. This concept of a new liquid‐liquid critical point is finding application to other liquids as well as water, such as silicon and silica. We also discuss related puzzles, such as the mysterious behavior of water near a biomolecule.

Abstract:The detailed and precise understanding of water-solid interaction largely relies on the development of atomic-scale experimental techniques, among which scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has proven to be a noteworthy example. In this perspective, we review the recent advances of STM techniques in imaging, spectroscopy, and manipulation of water molecules. We discuss how those newly developed techniques are applied to probe the structure and dynamics of water at solid surfaces with single-molecule and even submolecular resolution, paying particular attention to the ability of accessing the degree of freedom of hydrogen. In the end, we present an outlook on the directions of future STM studies of water-solid interfaces as well as the challenges faced by this field. Some new scanning probe techniques beyond STM are also envisaged.

Abstract:We review the spectroscopic techniques and scattering experiments used to probe the structure of water, and their interpretation using empirical and ab initio models, over the last 5 years. We show that all available scientific evidence overwhelmingly favors the view of classifying water near ambient conditions as a uniform, continuous tetrahedral liquid. While there are controversial issues in our understanding of water in the supercooled state, in confinement, at interfaces, or in solution, there is no real controversy in what is understood as regards bulk liquid water under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Have new states of water been discovered? Utilizing molecular dynamics and first-principles analyses across thousands of models, this paper introduces a dual-limit temperature regulation method under mass and spatial constraints, yielding water molecular chains and 2D water films, uncovering the key to unlocking a new world of water states. This has led to the emergence of dazzling and magical water structures, accompanied by the continuous emergence and summarization of corresponding electrical, optical, thermal, and mechanical laws as new structures appear. Concepts such as "new states of water", "water molecular chains", "spiral ionic networks", "universal dual-limit temperature control method" and "confined physics" are proposed. These insights delve deep into fundamental science, enhancing our understanding of water and exploring its unprecedented states. Furthermore, they extend to charged ions and polar molecules, pioneering new avenues in materials science, nanotechnology, atomic engineering, and energy conversion, with the potential to propel multiple disciplines and shape society.

Water and its relatives: the stable, supercooled and particularly the stretched, regimes

Abstract:While the water molecule is simple, its condensed phase liquid behavior is so complex that no consensus description has emerged despite three centuries of effort. Here we identify features of its behavior that are the most peculiar, hence suggest ways forward. We examine the properties of water at the boundaries of common experience, including stable states at high pressure, the supercooled state at normal and elevated pressure, and the stretched ("negative pressure") state, out to the limits of mechanical stability. The familiar anomalies at moderate pressures (viscosity and density (TMD) behavior, etc.), are not explained by H-bond breaking, according to common bond-breaking criteria. A comparison of data on the TMD, at both positive and negative pressures, with the predictions of popular pair potential models, shows dramatic discrepancies appearing in the stretched liquid domain. This prompts questions on the second critical point (TC2) hypothesis that has been guiding much current thinking. We turn to related systems for guidance, reviewing a hierarchy of water-like anomalies. We conclude that water models are far from complete and that proper understanding of water will depend on success in mastering the measurement of liquid behavior in the negative pressure domain - which we discuss.

Abstract:Hydrogels are soft and wet materials with a three-dimensional porous network structure, capable of swelling to retain a large volume of water and maintaining semi-solid integrity. In general, their diverse structures are mainly determined by the type of polymer matrix, the method and degree of crosslinking, and the three-dimensional structure. However, all different hydrogels share water as their core theme. The water content and organization, both at the surface and within the hydrogels, are crucial factors influencing their many physical properties. Over the past years, their formulations and applications have made transformative advances. But the construction of novel hydrogel systems requires understanding how water molecules or solutes interact with the hydrogel. Herein, this review reexamines hydrogels from the perspective of water and summarizes the states, distribution, and behavior of water within hydrogels, as well as the hydrogel properties imparted by water. We also enumerate the techniques for detecting water in hydrogels and discuss the latest progress in the regulation and design of water-hydrogel systems and their unique role in key applications. Thus, the role of water within hydrogels extends far beyond merely acting as a solvent; it is one of the key factors bridging the structure–function relationship in hydrogels.

Unravelling the contribution of local structures to the anomalies of water: the synergistic action of several factors

Abstract:We investigate the microscopic origin of water's anomalies by inspecting the hydrogen bond network (HBN) and the spatial organization of low-density-liquid (LDL) like and high-density-liquid (HDL) like environments. Specifically, we simulate --via classical molecular dynamics simulations-- the isobaric cooling of a sample composed by 512 water molecules from ambient to deeply undercooled conditions at three pressures, namely 1 bar, 400 bar and 1000 bar. \emph{In correspondence with the Widom line}, (i) the HDL-like dominating cluster undergoes fragmentation caused by the percolation of LDL-like aggregates following a spinodal-like kinetics; (ii) such fragmentation always occur s at a "critical" concentration of $\sim20-30\%$ in LDL; (iii) the HBN within LDL-like environments is characterized by an equal number of pentagonal and hexagonal rings that create a state of maximal frustration between a configuration that promotes crystallization (hexagonal ring) and a configuration that hinders it (pentagonal ring); (iv) the spatial organization of HDL-like environments shows a marked variation. Moreover, the inspection of the global symmetry shows that the intermediate-range order decreases in correspondence with the Wid om line, and such decrease becomes more pronounced upon increasing the pressure, hence supporting the hypothesis of a liquid-liquid critical point. Our results reveal and rationalize the complex microscopic origin of water's anomalies as the cooperative effect of several fac tors acting synergistically. Beyond implications for water, our findings may be extended to other materials displaying anomalous behaviours.

Abstract:Water/solid interfaces are ubiquitous and play a key role in many environmental, biophysical, and technological processes. Resolving the internal structure and probing the hydrogen-bond (H-bond) dynamics of the water molecules adsorbed on solid surfaces are fundamental issues of water science, which remains a great challenge owing to the light mass and small size of hydrogen. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a promising tool for attacking these problems, thanks to its capabilities of sub-Ångström spatial resolution, single-bond vibrational sensitivity, and atomic/molecular manipulation. The designed experimental system consists of a Cl-terminated tip and a sample fabricated by dosing water molecules in situ onto the Au(111)-supported NaCl(001) surfaces. The insulating NaCl films electronically decouple the water from the metal substrates, so the intrinsic frontier orbitals of water molecules are preserved. The Cl-tip facilitates the manipulation of the single water molecules, as well as gating the orbitals of water to the proximity of Fermi level (EF) via tip-water coupling. This paper outlines the detailed methods of submolecular resolution imaging, molecular/atomic manipulation, and single-bond vibrational spectroscopy of interfacial water. These studies open up a new route for investigating the H-bonded systems at the atomic scale.

Abstract:Water structure and dynamics are affected by the presence of a nearby interface. Here, first we review recent results by molecular dynamics simulations about the effect of different carbon-based materials, including armchair carbon nanotubes and a variety of graphene sheets—flat and with corrugation—on water structure and dynamics. We discuss the calculations of binding energies, hydrogen bond distributions, water’s diffusion coefficients and their relation with surface’s geometries at different thermodynamical conditions. Next, we present new results of the crystallization and dynamics of water in a rigid graphene sieve. In particular, we show that the diffusion of water confined between parallel walls depends on the plate distance in a non-monotonic way and is related to the water structuring, crystallization, re-melting and evaporation for decreasing inter-plate distance. Our results could be relevant in those applications where water is in contact with nanostructured carbon materials at ambient or cryogenic temperatures, as in man-made superhydrophobic materials or filtration membranes, or in techniques that take advantage of hydrated graphene interfaces, as in aqueous electron cryomicroscopy for the analysis of proteins adsorbed on graphene.

Understanding the Unusual Properties of Water

Abstract:Water is commonly associated to the existence of life. However, there is no clear reason why water should be the only liquid in which life could form and survive. Since the seminal work of L. J. Henderson in 1913, scientists are trying to answer the question about the relation between the unusual properties of water and the existence of life. Here we follow the first steps along the challenging path to this answer, trying to understand (i) what is unusual about water; (ii) why water has anomalies; (iii) which are the full implications of these unusual properties; and (iv) if these anomalies are exclusive properties of water. By identifying some interesting clues, then by formulating a working hypothesis and, next, by testing it, we find the surprising results that some properties of water, such as the anomalous behavior of density, are very sensitive to small changes of the microscopic interactions, while others, such as the presence of more than one crystal or a possible phase transition between two liquids with different local structures, are predicted not only in water, but also in other liquids. Since the change of local liquid structure could be relevant in biological processes, the possibility of a wide class of liquids with this property could help in understanding if water is essential for life.

Abstract:In the modern world, the focus of natural science research thought has shifted mainly to the molecular level, including the study of water. Water is considered as a mixture of interacting H2O molecules and their clusters based on the data of molecular dynamics, neutron and X-ray scattering. In this case, a huge layer of information is lost related to the composition of real water, its microstructure and behavior. In this work, we studied the structure and dynamics of water during its interaction with glass surfaces during drying using optical microscopy. We observed a panoramic picture of a cascade of interrelated phase transitions of distilled water and its microdispersed phase - sodium chloride microcrystals surrounded by a thick layer of hydrate liquid crystal water. Incubation of a glass slide in water for 2 days was accompanied by adhesion of the microdisperse phase to the glass surface. During the free evaporation of distilled water from a Petri dish, erosion of hydration shells, dissolution of NaCl microcrystals, and further recrystallization with the formation of large monolithic crystals and traces of non-drying water were observed. However, there are still questions that do not yet have clear answers. The authors hope to continue research in collaboration with interested colleagues.

Abstract:Water is the most abundant liquid on earth and also the substance with the largest number of anomalies in its properties. It is a prerequisite for life and as such a most important subject of current research in chemical physics and physical chemistry. In spite of its simplicity as a liquid, it has an enormously rich phase diagram where different types of ices, amorphous phases, and anomalies disclose a path that points to unique thermodynamics of its supercooled liquid state that still hides many unraveled secrets. In this review we describe the behavior of water in the regime from ambient conditions to the deeply supercooled region. The review describes simulations and experiments on this anomalous liquid. Several scenarios have been proposed to explain the anomalous properties that become strongly enhanced in the supercooled region. Among those, the second critical-point scenario has been investigated extensively, and at present most experimental evidence point to this scenario. Starting from very low temperatures, a coexistence line between a high-density amorphous phase and a low-density amorphous phase would continue in a coexistence line between a high-density and a low-density liquid phase terminating in a liquid-liquid critical point, LLCP. On approaching this LLCP from the one-phase region, a crossover in thermodynamics and dynamics can be found. This is discussed based on a picture of a temperature-dependent balance between a high-density liquid and a low-density liquid favored by, respectively, entropy and enthalpy, leading to a consistent picture of the thermodynamics of bulk water. Ice nucleation is also discussed, since this is what severely impedes experimental investigation of the vicinity of the proposed LLCP. Experimental investigation of stretched water, i.e., water at negative pressure, gives access to a different regime of the complex water diagram.
