Abstract:Glacial lake ecosystems are experiencing rapid changes due to accelerated glacier retreat. As glaciers recede, their influence on downstream habitats diminishes, potentially affecting the biodiversity of glacial lake microbial communities. However, there remains a knowledge gap regarding how bacterial biodiversity patterns in glacial lakes are altered by diminishing glacial influence. Here, we investigated shifts in bacterial communities in paired water and sediment samples collected from seven glacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, using a space-for-time substitution approach to understand the consequences of glacier retreat. Our findings reveal that bacterial diversity in lake water increases significantly with a higher glacier index (GI), whereas sediment bacterial diversity exhibits a negative correlation with GI. Both the water and sediment bacterial communities display significant structural shifts along the GI gradient. Notably, reduced glacial influence decreases the complexity of bacterial co-occurrence networks in lake water but enhances the network complexity in sediment. This divergence in diversity and co-occurrence patterns highlights that water and sediment bacterial communities respond differently to changes in glacial influence in these lake ecosystems. This study provides insights into how diminishing glacial influence impacts the bacterial biodiversity in glacial lake water and sediments, revealing contrasting patterns between the two habitats. These findings emphasize the need for comprehensive monitoring to understand the implications of glacier retreat on these fragile ecosystems.

Abstract:Different types of inlet water are expected to affect microbial communities of lake ecosystems due to change the environmental conditions and dispersal of species. However, knowledge of effects of changes in environmental conditions and export of microbial assemblages on lake ecosystems is limited, especially for glacier-fed lakes. Here, we collected water samples from the surface water of a glacier-fed lake and its two fed streams on the Tibetan Plateau to investigate the importance of glacial and non-glacial streams as sources of diversity for lake bacterial communities. Results showed that the glacial stream was an important source of microorganisms in the studied lake, contributing 45.53% to the total bacterial community in the lake water. While only 19.14% of bacterial community in the lake water was seeded by the non-glacial stream. Bacterial communities were significantly different between the glacier-fed lake and its two fed streams. pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, water temperature and total nitrogen, had a significant effect on bacterial spatial turnover, together explained 36.2% of the variation of bacterial distribution among habitats. Moreover, bacterial co-occurrence associations tended to be stronger in the lake water than in stream habitats. Collectively, this study may provide an important reference for assessing the contributions of different inlet water sources to glacier-fed lakes.

Abstract:Lakeshore wetlands are important terrestrial ecosystems worldwide, and the lakeshore wetlands of the Tibetan Plateau are sensitive to climate change. Therefore, in the context of global warming, studying the effects of temperature rise on surface soil microbial communities is essential for wetland biodiversity conservation. In this study, we used metagenomic sequencing to examine changes in the structure of surface soil microbial communities and their metabolic pathways in the Niaodao lakeshore wetland (NLW) in Qinghai Lake at 1.2 °C warming. Under natural control and warming conditions, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the most dominant bacterial phyla, and Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the predominant fungal phyla. Soil pH, electrical conductivity, and temperature affected the relative abundances of the dominant soil microbes. Effect size estimation in a linear discriminant analysis revealed 11 differential pathways between warming and natural conditions. Warming considerably enhanced the peptidoglycan biosynthetic pathways but inhibited the ATP-binding cassette transporter pathway. Warming treatment affected α-diversity indices, with an increase in the Shannon, Chao1, and richness indices and a decrease in the Simpson index compared with the index changes for the natural control conditions. Analysis of similarities showed significant differences between warming and control samples. Overall, temperature rise altered surface soil microbial community structure and increased surface soil microbial diversity and abundance in NLW.

Abstract:This study explored the dynamics of bacterial community composition, response to environmental factors, and co-occurrence network models across different habitats of Wuliangsuhai Lake during the glacial period. Water quality analysis and high-throughput sequencing were performed at 14 monitoring sites within the lake. Additionally, a co-occurrence network between the two bacterial operational taxonomic unit (OTU)-OTUs was established. The results indicated significant differences in water quality indices, namely total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity (SAL), chlorophyll-a (Chl.a), and electrical conductivity (EC), between the ice bodies of Wuliangsuhai Lake and subglacial water. Although there were no significant differences in α diversity across various media, substantial differences were observed in β diversity. The VIF and RDA analyses revealed that lake water quality factors significantly affected the microbial community structure and COD and TDS had the highest explanation for the community composition change. Network analysis demonstrated that competition dominated the bacterial community in water bodies with higher complexity and stability and ice body bacteria exhibited more reciprocal relationships and weaker resistance to external environmental disturbances. The co-occurrence network demonstrated a modular structure in the external environment, with g_Flavobacterium, f_Arcobacteraceae, and g_Sphingobacteriaceae being the main keystone species. Investigating the habitat heterogeneity of lake bacterial communities and identifying major groups and key species using molecular ecological network models and their topological effects can provide a theoretical foundation for monitoring and assessing the structural stability of lake ecosystems in cold regions.

Abstract:Abstract Mountain glaciers are frequently assessed for their hydrological connectivity from glaciers to proglacial lakes. Ecological process on glacier surfaces and downstream ecosystems have often been investigated separately, but few studies have focused on the connectivity between the different glacial habitats. Therefore, it remains a limited understanding of bacterial community assembly across different habitats along the glacier hydrological continuum. In this study, we sampled along a glacial catchment from supraglacial snow, cryoconite holes, supraglacial runoff, ice-marginal moraine and proglacial lake on the Tibetan Plateau. The bacterial communities in these habitats were analyzed using high-throughput DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to determine the bacterial composition and assembly. Our results showed that each habitat hosted unique bacterial communities, with higher bacterial α-diversity in transitional habitats (e. g., runoff and ice-marginal moraine). Null model analysis indicated that deterministic processes predominantly shaped bacterial assembly in snow, cryoconite holes and lake, while stochastic process dominantly governed bacterial community in transitional habitats. Collectively, our findings suggest that local environment play a critical role in filtering bacterial community composition within glacier habitats. This study enhances our understanding of microbial assembly process in glacier environments and provides valuable insights into the factors governing bacterial community compositions across different habitats along the glacial hydrological continuum.

Abstract:Climate change and anthropogenic factors can alter biodiversity and can lead to changes in community structure and function. Despite the potential impacts, no long-term records of climatic influences on microbial communities exist. The Tibetan Plateau is a highly sensitive region that is currently undergoing significant alteration resulting from both climate change and increased human activity. Ice cores from glaciers in this region serve as unique natural archives of bacterial abundance and community composition, and contain concomitant records of climate and environmental change. We report high-resolution profiles of bacterial density and community composition over the past half century in ice cores from three glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau. Statistical analysis showed that the bacterial community composition in the three ice cores converged starting in the 1990s. Changes in bacterial community composition were related to changing precipitation, increasing air temperature and anthropogenic activities in the vicinity of the plateau. Collectively, our ice core data on bacteria in concert with environmental and anthropogenic proxies indicate that the convergence of bacterial communities deposited on glaciers across a wide geographical area and situated in diverse habitat types was likely induced by climatic and anthropogenic drivers.
Global warming induces the succession of photosynthetic microbial communities in a glacial lake on the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:As an important freshwater resource in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, glacial lakes are being immensely affected by global warming. Due to the lack of long-term monitoring data, the processes and driving mechanisms of the water ecology of these glacial lakes in a rapidly changing climate are poorly understood. This study, for the first time, reconstructed changes in water temperature and photosynthetic microbial communities over the past 200 years in Lake Basomtso, a glacial lake on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Temperatures were reconstructed using a paleotemperature proxy based on branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs), the cell membrane lipids of some bacteria, and photosynthetic microbial communities were determined by high-throughput DNA sequencing. The reconstructed mean annual air temperature (MAAT) at Lake Basomtso varied between 6.9 and 8.3 °C over the past 200 years, with a rapid warming rate of 0.25 °C /10 yrs after 1950s. Carbon isotope of sediment and n-alkane analyses indicate that ≥95% of the organic matter in Lake Basomtso is derived from a mixture of terrestrial C3 plants and endogenous organic matter inputs, and the proportion of endogenous organic matter in the sediments has gradually increased since the 1960s. The sedimentary DNA analyses of the sediment core reveal that Chloracea is the most dominant prokaryotic photosynthetic microbial group (84.5%) over the past 200 years. However, the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria has increased from ≤6.8% before the 1960s to 15.5% nowadays, suggesting that warmer temperatures favor the growth of Cyanobacteria in glacial lakes. Among eukaryotic photosynthetic microorganisms, the Chlorophyceae have been gradually replaced by Dinoflagellata and Diatomacae since the 1980s, although the Chlorophyceae still had the highest average relative abundance overall (30-40%). The Pb isotopic composition, together with the total phosphorous concentration, implies that human activity exerted a minimal impact on Lake Basomtso over the past 200 yrs. However, the synchronous fluctuations of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and metal elements in sediments suggest that temperature appears to have a strong influence on nutrient input to Lake Basomtso by controlling glacial erosion. Global warming and the concurrent increase in glacial meltwater are two main factors driving changes in nutrient inputs from terrestrial sources which, in turn, increases the lake productivity, and changes microbial community composition. Our findings demonstrate the sensitive response of glacial lake ecology to global warming. It is necessary to strengthen the monitoring and research of glacial lake ecology on the Tibetan plateau, so as to more scientifically and accurately understand the response process and mechanism of the glacial lake ecosystem under global warming.

Abstract:Recent climate warming and atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) deposition are affecting a broad spectrum of physical, ecological and human systems that may be irreversible on a century time scale and have the potential to cause regime shifts in ecological systems. These changes may alter the limnological conditions with important but still unclear effects on lake ecosystems . We present changes in cladoceran with comparisons to diatom assemblages over the past ~200 years from high-resolution, well-dated sediment cores retrieved from six high mountain lakes in the southeastern (SE) margin of the Tibetan Plateau . Our findings suggest that warming and the exponential increase of atmospheric Nr deposition are the major drivers of ecological regime changes. Shifts in cladoceran and diatom communities in high alpine lakes began over a century ago and intensified since 1950 CE, indicating a regional-scale response to anthropogenic climate warming. Zooplankton in the forest lakes showed asynchronous trajectories, with increased Nr deposition as a significant explanatory factor. Forest lakes with higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations partially buffered the impacts of Nr deposition with little structural change, while lakes with low DOC display symptoms of resilience loss related to Nr deposition. Biological community compositional turnover in subalpine lakes has shown marked shifts, equivalent to those of low-elevation lakes strongly affected by direct human impacts. This suggests that local effects override climatic forcing and that lake basin features modified by anthropogenic activity act as basin-specific filters of common forcing. Our results indicate that snow and glacial meltwaters along with nutrient enrichment related to climate warming and atmospheric Nr deposition, represent major threats for lake ecosystems, even in remote areas. We reveal that climate and atmospheric contaminants will further impact ecological conditions and alter aquatic food webs in higher altitude biomes if climate and anthropogenic forcing continue.

Abstract:Greenland and the Tibetan Plateau, also known as the third pole, are both cold environments where anthropogenic activities are relatively weak. There are multitudinous lakes in both regions, especially in Greenland, where small water bodies are continuously created as glaciers retreat. It is unclear whether the community structure and community assembly mechanisms of these water bodies are consistent with those of lakes in the Tibetan Plateau that were indirectly influenced by glaciers. In addition, due to different evolution times of the lakes, differences of microbial diversity, especially at the sub‐species level, are feasible but not yet reported. Microbial compositions in lake water and sediment were investigated based on high‐throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. The oligotyping analysis revealed disproportionally distributed bacterial oligotypes in lakes between the two different areas. Moreover, microbial macrodiversity and intra‐operational taxonomic units microdiversity is significantly higher in Greenland lakes which experiencing early lake ontogeny. Microbial community composition and functionality significantly distinguished between the two regions and habitats. Multivariate analysis together with null model tests demonstrated that deterministic processes largely controlled the patterns of community structure in the sediment, while stochastic processes are more important for those in pelagic water in both regions. Microbes may be further subject to N and P co‐limitation in line with the evolution of lake ecosystems. The obtained results could help us understand evolution trajectory of these polar lakes under the future climate change scenario.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau has ∼1,200 lakes larger than 1 km2 with a total area of ~46,000 km2. The annual mean air temperature of the Tibetan Plateau has increased 2.5°C over the past 60 years. Lakes in this region are extremely responsive to climate changes as a result of their low biodiversity and simple food webs. However, it is unclear whether the current anthropogenic warming will benefit or threaten the aquatic ecosystems in this region. We assessed patterns of change associated with climate change in a shallow, freshwater lake (Genggahai Lake) on the NE Tibetan Plateau over the past ~1,600 years based on diverse aquatic fossils (macrophytes, molluscs, cladocerans and diatoms), total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) of a sediment core. The abundances of macrophytes, molluscs and cladocerans, and the concentrations of TOC and TN in the sediments were high during the Mediaeval Warm Period (MWP, ~940–1,410 CE) but low during the Dark Ages Cold Period (DACP, ~390–940 CE) and the Little Ice Age (LIA, ~1,410–1970 CE), suggesting that modest natural warming was associated with the biomass of macrophytes and consumers in the food web. By contrast, low abundance of macrophytes and high abundance of planktonic diatoms were recorded in the sediments during the Current Warm Period (CWP, ~1970–2020 CE). Current anthropogenic warming has resulted in significantly higher temperatures than during the MWP, associated with the development of planktonic algae rather than macrophytes. Our findings show that the current anthropogenic warming, coupled with increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition and activated nutrients from thawed permafrost, is associated with phytoplankton dominance in lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, and may lead to significant reductions in ecosystem services provided by the lakes.

Abstract:Many paleolimnological studies from the Northern Hemisphere have shown how diatom assemblages preserved in dated lake sediment cores have responded to anthropogenic climate warming over the past ~100 years. In contrast, diatom records from lakes in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau have typically registered minimal compositional change during this recent period of warming. Site-specific conditions can dampen the biological response to regional climate change in this topographically complex mountain landscape. In this study, we used a 210Lead/137Cesium-dated sedimentary diatom record collected in 2018 from a remote, oligotrophic, alpine lake (Cuomujiri Lake) in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau to track environmental changes during the past ~100 years. Change-point analysis on air temperature trends from the nearby Nyingchi meteorological station and from across the Tibetan Plateau (composite of 150 stations) showed exceptionally rapid and statistically significant warming since 2004 CE, although localized variations exist in this heterogeneous region. Concurrent with this pronounced temperature rise, the Cuomujiri diatom record registered an abrupt shift from a benthic to a planktonic-dominated assemblage for the first time in the record, with a clear increase in Lindavia ocellata since ca. 2004 CE. Despite substantial warming in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau over the past several decades, diatom assemblages in Cuomujiri Lake did not register a notable response until the significantly high temperatures experienced during the past ~14 years. These results from Earth’s highest plateau signify that, with sustained anthropogenic warming, exceedance of ecological thresholds will continue in lakes throughout the Tibetan Plateau and likely in other high latitude regions of the world.

Abstract:Temperature can mediate aquatic carbon utilization by changing the interactions between bacteria and individual carbon substrates. The discovery of core species that affect carbon utilization provides insight into potential carbon sequestration within inland water bodies under future climate warming. Microbes play an important role in aquatic carbon cycling but we have a limited understanding of their functional responses to changes in temperature across large geographic areas. Here, we explored how microbial communities utilized different carbon substrates and the underlying ecological mechanisms along a space‐for‐time substitution temperature gradient of future climate change. The gradient included 47 lakes from five major lake regions in China spanning a difference of nearly 15°C in mean annual temperatures (MAT). Our results indicated that lakes from warmer regions generally had lower values of variables related to carbon concentrations and greater carbon utilization than those from colder regions. The greater utilization of carbon substrates under higher temperatures could be attributed to changes in bacterial community composition, with a greater abundance of Cyanobacteria and Actinobacteriota and less Proteobacteria in warmer lake regions. We also found that the core species in microbial networks changed with increasing temperature, from Hydrogenophaga and Rhodobacteraceae, which inhibited the utilization of amino acids and carbohydrates, to the CL500‐29‐marine‐group, which promoted the utilization of all almost carbon substrates. Overall, our findings suggest that temperature can mediate aquatic carbon utilization by changing the interactions between bacteria and individual carbon substrates, and the discovery of core species that affect carbon utilization provides insight into potential carbon sequestration within inland water bodies under future climate warming.

Abstract:Over the last six decades, northwest China has undergone a significant climatic shift from "warm-dry" to "warm-wet", profoundly impacting the structures and functions of lake ecosystem across the region. However, the influences of this climatic transition on the diversity patterns, co-occurrence network, and assembly processes of eukaryotic microbial communities in lake ecosystem, along with the underlying mechanisms, remain largely unexplored. To bridge this knowledge gap, our study focused on Lake Bosten, the largest inland freshwater body in China, conducting a comprehensive analysis. Firstly, we examined the dynamics of key water quality parameters in the lake based on long-term monitoring data (1992–2022). Subsequently, we collected 93 water samples spanning two distinctive periods: low water level (WL) and high total dissolved solids (TDS) ( PerWLTDS ; 2010–2011; attributed to "warm-dry" climate), and high WL and low TDS ( PerTDSWL ; 2021–2022; associated with "warm-wet" climate). Eukaryotic microorganisms were further investigated using 18S rRNA gene sequencing and various statistical methods. Our findings revealed that climatic warming and wetting significantly increased eukaryotic microbial α-diversity (all Wilcox. test: P <0.05), while simultaneously reducing β-diversity (all Wilcox. test: P <0.001) and network complexity. Through the two sampling periods, assembly mechanisms of eukaryotic microorganisms were predominantly influenced by dispersal limitation (DL) and drift (DR) within stochastic processes, alongside homogeneous selection (HoS) within deterministic processes. WL played a mediating role in eukaryotic microbial DL and HoS processes in the PerTDSWL , whereas water quality and α-diversity influenced the DL process in the PerWLTDS . Collectively, these results underscore the direct and indirect impacts of "warm-wet" conditions on the eukaryotic microorganisms within Lake Bosten. This study provides valuable insights into the evolutionary dynamics of lake ecosystems under such climatic conditions and aids in predicting the ecological ramifications of global climatic changes.

Abstract:Climate warming is a pressing global issue with substantial impacts on soil health and function. However, the influence of environmental context on the responses of soil microorganisms to warming remains largely elusive, particularly in alpine ecosystems. This study examined the responses of the soil microbiome to in situ experimental warming across three elevations (3850 m, 4100 m, and 4250 m) in the meadow of Gongga Mountain, eastern Tibetan Plateau. Our findings demonstrate that soil microbial diversity is highly resilient to warming, with significant impacts observed only at specific elevations. Furthermore, the influence of warming on the composition of the soil microbial community is also elevation-dependent, underscoring the importance of local environmental context in shaping microbial evolution in alpine soils under climate warming. Notably, we identified soil moisture at 3850 m and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio at 4250 m as indirect predictors regulating the responses of microbial diversity to warming at specific elevations. These findings underscore the paramount importance of considering pre-existing environmental conditions in predicting the response of alpine soil microbiomes to climate warming. Our study provides novel insights into the intricate interactions between climate warming, soil microbiome, and environmental context in alpine ecosystems, illuminating the complex mechanisms governing soil microbial ecology in these fragile and sensitive environments.

Abstract:Recently, the utility of trait-based approaches for microbial communities has been identified. Increasing availability of whole genome sequences provide the opportunity to explore the genetic foundations of a variety of functional traits. We proposed a machine learning framework to quantitatively link the genomic features with functional traits. Genes from bacteria genomes belonging to different functional traits were grouped to Cluster of Orthologs (COGs), and were used as features. Then, TF-IDF technique from the text mining domain was applied to transform the data to accommodate the abundance and importance of each COG. After TF-IDF processing, COGs were ranked using feature selection methods to identify their relevance to the functional trait of interest. Extensive experimental results demonstrated that functional trait related genes can be detected using our method. Further, the method has the potential to provide novel biological insights.
Bacterial diversity and co‐occurrence patterns differ across a worldwide spatial distribution of habitats in glacier ecosystems

Abstract:Glaciers cover nearly 10% of the Earth's surface and are unique biomes dominated by microbial communities that support key ecosystem processes. The melting of glaciers is among the most conspicuous consequences of global climate change, with impacts on microbial ecology and associated biogeochemistry. However, we are still missing an integrative understanding of microbial biodiversity from divergent habitats associated with glaciers. Here, we compiled global microbiome metadata from 93 representative glaciers over 180 locations and used random forest, microbial ecological networks, and structural equation modeling to evaluate the biodiversity and environmental factors associated with the glacier microbiomes of seven contrasting habitats: water, epilithic biofilm, cryoconite, mat, ice, sediment and permafrost soil. The results showed that microbial diversity largely changed across habitats, with the highest in permafrost soil, followed by sediment, ice, mat, cryoconite, water, and epilithic biofilm. More importantly, we provided critical evidence that the environmental and climatic factors associated with the microbiomes of glaciers varied with glacier habitats. Microbial diversity in water was highly correlated with latitude, cryoconite microbial diversity was significantly (P = 0.01) correlated with pH, and permafrost soil and sediment microbial diversity were mainly explained by temperature (17.05% and 13.37%, respectively). Using ecological association network analysis, we identified some tightly linked common microbial taxa (e.g., Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) that were present in all the habitats and were vulnerable to climatic factors, such as temperature and precipitation. This study demonstrated that microbial diversity, drivers and co‐occurrence patterns differ among glacier habitats globally, and diverse habitat‐dependent glacier microbiomes could serve as early warning sentinels for the study of life on glaciers and its potential future in a warming world. Abstract:Extensive global glacial retreats are threatening cryosphere ecosystem functioning and the associated biota in glacier-fed water systems. Understanding multi-group biodiversity distributions and compositional variation across diverse but hydrologically linked habitats under varying glacial influences will help explain the mechanisms underlying glacial community organization and ecosystem processes. However, such data are generally lacking due to the difficulty of obtaining biodiversity information across wide taxonomic ranges. Here, we used a multi-marker environmental DNA metabarcoding approach to simultaneously investigate the spatial patterns of community compositions and assembly mechanisms of four taxonomic groups (cyanobacteria, diatoms, invertebrates, and vertebrates) along the flowpaths of a tributary of Lake Nam Co on the Tibetan Plateau-from its glacier headwaters, through its downstream river and wetlands, to its estuary. We detected 869 operational taxonomic units: 119 cyanobacterial, 395 diatom, 269 invertebrate, and 86 vertebrate. Taxonomic richnesses consistently increased from upstream to downstream, and although all groups showed community similarity distance decay patterns, the trend for vertebrates was the weakest. Cyanobacteria, diatom, and invertebrate community compositions were significantly correlated with several environmental factors, while the vertebrate community was only correlated with waterway width. Variation partitioning analysis indicated that varying extents of environmental conditions and spatial factors affected community organizations for different groups. Furthermore, stochastic processes contributed prominently to the microorganisms' community assembly (Sloan's neutral model R2 = 0.77 for cyanobacteria and 0.73 for diatoms) but were less important for macroorganisms (R2 = 0.21 for invertebrates and 0.15 for vertebrates). That trend was further substantiated by modified stochasticity ratio analyses. This study provides the first holistic picture of the diverse biotic communities residing in a series of hydrologically connected glacier-influenced habitats. Our results both uncovered the distinct mechanisms that underlie the metacommunity organizations of different glacial organisms and helped comprehensively predict the ecological impacts of the world's melting glaciers.

Abstract:Modelling, monitoring, and experimental data have shown that global climate change can impact aquatic phytoplankton communities directly, through the effects of warming on primary producers, as well as indirectly through cascading effects from higher trophic levels. Although both concepts are common in modern limnological studies, it remains unclear whether the 'top-down' effects from higher trophic levels on phytoplankton exert strong effects in natural systems over long (centennial) timescales. Here, we use multiproxy data including pigments, zooplankton remains, nutrient concentrations, and paleoclimate indicators from a sediment core in Dagze Co, Central Tibet (a two-trophic level lake) to reconstruct algal production, zooplankton community, nutrient and salinity changes. Our results show that top-down effects of higher trophic levels offset effects from warming and nutrient addition on algal growth. Warming enhanced glacial meltwater inflow to the lake, and intensive human activities increased nutrient inputs. Changes in lake salinity and N:P ratios coincided with zooplankton community shifts during the past 600 years, and Daphnia tibetana replaced the brine shrimp, Artemia tibetiana, after the relocation of a town to upstream of the lake in the 1980s led to overharvesting of the brine shrimp. These shifts contributed strongly to changes in algal communities, with changes in zooplankton leading to strong top-down effects that decreased algal production through increasing grazing pressure despite increasing nutrient concentrations. Our results suggest that the typical external drivers (climate and nutrients) of lake ecosystems may be suppressed by internal shifts in plankton communities in lakes.

Abstract:I calculate the screening length and its relation to elastic constants from mean-field models of superionic conductors. The Debye formula for a continuous fluid's screening length is replaced by one that accounts for the discrete nature of the lattice. Interactions alter the screening length and in some cases give oscillations in the charge structure. The screening lengths derived here are exact not only at low temperature where there are few defects, but also at high temperature where the effective interaction strength is small. The mean-field treatment correctly gives the decrease in an elastic constant observed at the superionic transition for a variety of crystals. This decrease is best explained by a change in the defect creation entropy with density. The effect of doping on the elastic constant also agrees well with experiment. The extension to the mean-field models given here provides a consistent picture of the response of a superionic crystal to electrical, mechanical and thermal stresses, as well as to doping.
