Abstract:Superlattices from twisted graphene mono- and bi-layer systems give rise to on-demand many-body states such as Mott insulators and unconventional superconductors. These phenomena are ascribed to a combination of flat bands and strong Coulomb interactions. However, a comprehensive understanding is lacking because the low-energy band structure strongly changes when the electron filling is varied. Here, we gain direct access to the filling-dependent low energy bands of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) by applying micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to in situ gated devices. Our findings for the two systems are in stark contrast: The doping dependent dispersion for TBG can be described in a simple model, combining a filling-dependent rigid band shift with a many-body related bandwidth change. In TDBG, on the other hand, we find a complex behaviour of the low-energy bands, combining non-monotonous bandwidth changes and tuneable gap openings. Our work establishes the extent of electric field tunability of the low energy electronic states in twisted graphene superlattices and can serve to underpin the theoretical understanding of the resulting phenomena.

Abstract:The new two-dimensional (2D) kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ has attracted much recent attention due to the coexistence of superconductivity, charge order, topology and kagome physics. A key issue in this field is to unveil the unique reconstructed electronic structure, which successfully accommodates different orders and interactions to form a fertile ground for emergent phenomena. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) evidence for two distinct band reconstructions in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The first one is characterized by the appearance of new electron energy band at low temperature. The new band is theoretically reproduced when the three dimensionality of the charge order is considered for a band-folding along the out-of-plane direction. The second reconstruction is identified as a surface induced orbital-selective shift of the electron energy band. Our results provide the first evidence for the three dimensionality of the charge order in single-particle spectral function, highlighting the importance of long-range out-of-plane electronic correlations in this layered kagome superconductor. They also point to the feasibility of orbital-selective control of the band structure via surface modification, which would open a new avenue for manipulating exotic phenomena in this system, including superconductivity.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate electrons in two-dimensional materials with external electric fields provides a route to synthetic band engineering. By imposing artificially designed and spatially periodic superlattice potentials, electronic properties can be further altered beyond the constraints of naturally occurring atomic crystals1–5. Here, we report a new approach to fabricate high-mobility superlattice devices by integrating surface dielectric patterning with atomically thin van der Waals materials. By separating the device assembly and superlattice fabrication processes, we address the intractable trade-off between device processing and mobility degradation that constrains superlattice engineering in conventional systems. The improved electrostatics of atomically thin materials allows smaller wavelength superlattice patterns relative to previous demonstrations. Moreover, we observe the formation of replica Dirac cones in ballistic graphene devices with sub-40 nm wavelength superlattices and report fractal Hofstadter spectra6–8 under large magnetic fields from superlattices with designed lattice symmetries that differ from that of the host crystal. Our results establish a robust and versatile technique for band structure engineering of graphene and related van der Waals materials with dynamic tunability.

Abstract:In the quest for novel quantum states driven by topology and correlation, kagome lattice materials have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive electronic band structures, featuring flat bands (FBs) arising from the quantum destructive interference of the electronic wave function. The tuning of the FBs to the chemical potential would lead to the possibility of liberating electronic instabilities that lead to emergent electronic orders. Despite extensive studies, direct evidence of FBs tuned to the chemical potential and their participation in emergent electronic orders have been lacking in bulk quantum materials. Here using a combination of Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Density Functional Theory (DFT), we reveal that the low-energy electronic structure of the recently discovered Cr-based kagome metal superconductor CsCr3Sb5 is dominated by a pervasive FB in close proximity to, and below the Fermi level. A comparative analysis with orbital-projected DFT and polarization dependence measurement uncovers that an orbital-selective renormalization mechanism is needed to reconcile the discrepancy with the DFT calculations, which predict the FB to appear 200 meV above the Fermi level. Furthermore, we observe the FB to shift away from the Fermi level by 20 meV in the low-temperature density wave-ordered phase, highlighting the role of the FB in the emergent electronic order. Our results reveal CsCr3Sb5 to stand out as a promising platform for further exploration into the effects of FBs near the Fermi level on kagome lattices, and their role in emergent orders in bulk quantum materials.

Abstract:For solids, the dispersionless flat band has long been recognized as an ideal platform for achieving intriguing quantum phases. However, experimental progress in revealing flat-band physics has so far been achieved mainly in artificially engineered systems represented as magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of flat-band-dominated anomalous transport and magnetic behaviors in CoSn, a paramagnetic kagome-lattice compound. By combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we reveal the existence of a kagome-lattice-derived flat band right around the Fermi level. Strikingly, the resistivity within the kagome lattice plane is more than one order of magnitude larger than the interplane one, in sharp contrast with conventional (quasi-) two-dimensional layered materials. Moreover, the magnetic susceptibility under the out-of-plane magnetic field is found to be much smaller as compared with the in-plane case, which is revealed to be arising from the introduction of a unique orbital diamagnetism. Systematic analyses reveal that these anomalous and giant anisotropies can be reasonably attributed to the unique properties of flat-band electrons, including large effective mass and self-localization of wave functions. Our results broaden the already fascinating flat-band physics, and demonstrate the feasibility of exploring them in natural solid-state materials in addition to artificial ones.

Abstract:The newly discovered Kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb and Cs) continue to bring surprises in generating unusual phenomena and physical properties, including anomalous Hall effect, unconventional charge density wave, electronic nematicity and time-reversal symmetry breaking. Here we report an unexpected emergence of multiple flat bands in the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ superconductors. By performing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements, we observed four branches of flat bands that span over the entire momentum space. The appearance of the flat bands is not anticipated from the band structure calculations and cannot be accounted for by the known mechanisms of flat band generation. It is intimately related to the evolution of van Hove singularities. It is for the first time to observe such emergence of multiple flat bands in solid materials. Our findings provide new insights in revealing the underlying mechanism that governs the unusual behaviors in the Kagome superconductors. They also provide a new pathway in producing flat bands and set a platform to study the flat bands related physics.

Abstract:Magnetic kagome materials provide a fascinating playground for exploring the interplay of magnetism, correlation and topology. Many magnetic kagome systems have been reported including the binary FemXn (X=Sn, Ge; m:n = 3:1, 3:2, 1:1) family and the rare earth RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth) family, where their kagome flat bands are calculated to be near the Fermi level in the paramagnetic phase. While partially filling a kagome flat band is predicted to give rise to a Stoner-type ferromagnetism, experimental visualization of the magnetic splitting across the ordering temperature has not been reported for any of these systems due to the high ordering temperatures, hence leaving the nature of magnetism in kagome magnets an open question. Here, we probe the electronic structure with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a kagome magnet thin film FeSn synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy. We identify the exchange-split kagome flat bands, whose splitting persists above the magnetic ordering temperature, indicative of a local moment picture. Such local moments in the presence of the topological flat band are consistent with the compact molecular orbitals predicted in theory. We further observe a large spin-orbital selective band renormalization in the Fe d_xy+d_(x^2-y^2 ) spin majority channel reminiscent of the orbital selective correlation effects in the iron-based superconductors. Our discovery of the coexistence of local moments with topological flat bands in a kagome system echoes similar findings in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, and provides a basis for theoretical effort towards modeling correlation effects in magnetic flat band systems.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals materials such as graphene present an opportunity for band structure engineering using custom superlattice potentials. In this study, we demonstrate how self-assemblies of magnetic iron-oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanospheres stacked on monolayer graphene generate a proximity-induced magnetic superlattice in graphene and modify its band structure. Interactions between the nanospheres and the graphene layer generate superlattice Dirac points in addition to a gapped energy spectrum near the K and K′ valleys, resulting in magnetic confinement of quasiparticles around the nanospheres. This is evidenced by gate-dependent resistance oscillations, observed in our low temperature transport measurements, and confirmed by self-consistent tight binding calculations. Furthermore, we show that an external magnetic field can tune the magnetic superlattice potential created by the nanospheres, and thus the transport characteristics of the system. This technique for magnetic-field-tuned band structure engineering using magnetic nanostructures can be extended to a broader class of 2D van der Waals and topological materials.

Tuning the bandstructure of electrons in a two-dimensional artificial electrostatic crystal in GaAs quantum wells

Abstract:The electronic properties of solids are determined by the crystal structure and interactions between electrons, giving rise to a variety of collective phenomena including superconductivity, strange metals and correlated insulators. The mechanisms underpinning many of these collective phenomena remain unknown, driving interest in creating artificial crystals which replicate the system of interest while allowing precise control of key parameters. Cold atoms trapped in optical lattices provide great flexibility and tunability [1, 2], but cannot replicate the long range Coulomb interactions and long range hopping that drive collective phenomena in real crystals. Solid state approaches support long range hopping and interactions, but previous attempts with laterally patterned semiconductor systems were not able to create tunable low disorder artificial crystals, while approaches based on Moire superlattices in twisted two-dimensional (2D) materials [3, 4] have limited tunability and control of lattice geometry. Here we demonstrate the formation of highly tunable artificial crystals by superimposing a periodic electrostatic potential on the 2D electron gas in an ultrashallow (25 nm deep) GaAs quantum well. The 100 nm period artificial crystal is identified by the formation of a new bandstructure, different from the original cubic crystal and unique to the artificial triangular lattice: transport measurements show the Hall coefficient changing sign as the chemical potential sweeps through the artificial bands. Uniquely, the artificial bandstructure can be continuously tuned from parabolic free-electron bands into linear graphene-like and flat kagome-like bands in a single device. This approach allows the formation arbitrary geometry 2D artificial crystals, opening a new route to studying collective quantum states.

Abstract:Flat bands that do not merely arise from weak interactions can produce exotic physical properties, such as superconductivity or correlated many-body effects. The quantum metric can differentiate whether flat bands will result in correlated physics or are merely dangling bonds. A potential avenue for achieving correlated flat bands involves leveraging geometrical constraints within specific lattice structures, such as the kagome lattice; however, materials are often more complex. In these cases, quantum geometry becomes a powerful indicator of the nature of bands with small dispersions. We present a simple, soft-chemical processing route to access a flat band with an extended quantum metric below the Fermi level. By oxidizing Ni-kagome material Cs 2 Ni 3 S 4 to CsNi 3 S 4 , we see a two orders of magnitude drop in the room temperature resistance. However, CsNi 3 S 4 is still insulating, with no evidence of a phase transition. Using experimental data, density functional theory calculations, and symmetry analysis, our results suggest the emergence of a correlated insulating state of unknown origin.

Tunable Kondo physics in a van der Waals kagome antiferromagnet

Abstract:The Kondo lattice physics, describing the hybridization of localized spin matrix with dispersive conduction electrons, breeds numerous discoveries in the realm of strongly correlated quantum matter. Generally observed in lanthanide and actinide compounds, increasing attention has been directed towards alternative pathways for achieving flat band structures, such as Morie superlattices and Kagome metals. However, fine control of Kondo interaction outside of heterostructures remains elusive. Here we report the discovery of a van der Waals (vdW) kagome antiferromagnet CsCr6Sb6. Angle-resolved photoemission spectra and theoretical analysis show clear flat bands, consisting of half-filled 3dxz and 3dyz orbitals of Cr, situated 50 meV below the Fermi level. Importantly, we observe the emergence of anomalous Hall effect with remarkable tunability by simple reduction the sample thickness. The effective control of kondo interaction in CsCr6Sb6 render it an ideal platform for exploring unpresented phenomena using the vast toolkit of vdW structures.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials such as graphene allow direct access to the entirety of atoms constituting the crystal. While this makes shaping by lithography particularly attractive as a tool for band structure engineering through quantum confinement effects, edge disorder and contamination have so far limited progress towards experimental realization. Here, we define a superlattice in graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, by etching an array of holes through the heterostructure with minimum feature sizes of 12–15 nm. We observe a magnetotransport regime that is distinctly different from the characteristic Landau fan of graphene, with a sizeable bandgap that can be tuned by a magnetic field. The measurements are accurately described by transport simulations and analytical calculations. Finally, we observe strong indications that the lithographically engineered band structure at the main Dirac point is cloned to a satellite peak that appears due to moiré interactions between the graphene and the encapsulating material.

Topological Band Evolution Between Lieb and Kagome Lattices

Abstract:Among two-dimensional lattices, both kagome and Lieb lattices have been extensively studied, showing unique physics related to their exotic flat and Dirac bands. Interestingly, we realize that the two lattices are in fact interconvertible by applying strains along the diagonal direction, as they share the same structural configuration in the unit cell, i.e., one corner-site and two edge-center states. We study phase transitions between the two lattices using the tight-binding approach and propose one experimental realization of the transitions using photonic devices. The evolution of the band structure demonstrates a continuous evolution of the flat band from the middle of the Lieb band to the top/bottom of the kagome band. Though the flat band is destroyed during the transition, the topological features are conserved due to the retained inversion symmetry, as confirmed by Berry curvature, Wannier charge center, and edge state calculations. Meanwhile, the triply degenerate Dirac point (M) in the Lieb lattice transforms into two doubly degenerate Dirac points, one of which moves along M-Gamma and the other moves along M-K/K' directions that form the kagome band eventually. Interestingly, the Dirac cones in the transition states are strongly tilted, showing a coexistence of type-I and type-II Dirac points. We finally show that these transitions can be experimentally realized in photonic lattices using waveguide arrays.

Abstract:Abstract Kagome lattices of various transition metals are versatile platforms for achieving anomalous Hall effects, unconventional charge-density wave orders and quantum spin liquid phenomena due to the strong correlations, spin-orbit coupling and/or magnetic interactions involved in such a lattice. Here, we use laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations to investigate the electronic structure of the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsTi 3 Bi 5 , which is isostructural to the AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb or Cs) kagome superconductor family and possesses a two-dimensional kagome network of titanium. We directly observe a striking flat band derived from the local destructive interference of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattice. In agreement with calculations, we identify type-II and type-III Dirac nodal lines and their momentum distribution in CsTi 3 Bi 5 from the measured electronic structures. Abstract:We demonstrate multiple flat bands and compact localized states (CLSs) in a photonic super-Kagome lattice (SKL) that exhibits coexistence of singular and nonsingular flat bands within its unique band structure. Specifically, we find that the upper two flat bands of an SKL are singular - characterized by singularities due to band touching with their neighboring dispersive bands at the Brillouin zone center. Conversely, the lower three degenerate flat bands are nonsingular, and remain spectrally isolated from other dispersive bands. The existence of such two distinct types of flat bands is experimentally demonstrated by observing stable evolution of the CLSs with various geometrical shapes in a laser-written SKL. We also discuss the classification of the flat bands in momentum space, using band-touching singularities of the Bloch wave functions. Furthermore, we validate this classification in real space based on unit cell occupancy of the CLSs in a single SKL plaquette. These results may provide insights for the study of flatband transport, dynamics, and nontrivial topological phenomena in other relevant systems.

Abstract:Nanoscience offers a unique opportunity to design modern materials from the bottom up, via low-cost, solution processed assembly of nanoscale building blocks. These systems promise electronic band structure engineering using not only the nanoscale structural modulation, but also the mesoscale spatial patterning, although experimental realization of the latter has been challenging. Here we design and fabricate a new type of artificial solid by stacking graphene on a self-assembled, nearly periodic array of nanospheres, and experimentally observe superlattice miniband effects. We find conductance dips at commensurate fillings of charge carriers per superlattice unit cell, which are key features of minibands that are induced by the quasi-periodic deformation of the graphene lattice. These dips become stronger when the lattice strain is larger. Using a tight-binding model, we simulate the effect of lattice deformation as a parameter affecting the inter-atomic hopping integral, and confirm the superlattice transport behavior. This 2D material-nanoparticle heterostructure enables facile band structure engineering via self-assembly, promising for large area electronics and optoelectronics applications.

Superlattice Engineering of Topology in Massive Dirac Fermions

Abstract:We show that a superlattice potential can be employed to engineer topology in massive Dirac fermions in systems such as bilayer graphene, moiré graphene-boron nitride, and transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers and bilayers. We use symmetry analysis to analyze band inversions to determine the Chern number $\mathscr C$ for the valence band as a function of tunable potential parameters for a class of $C_4$ and $C_3$ symmetric potentials. We present a novel method to engineer Chern number $\mathscr{C}=2$ for the valence band and show that the applied potential at minimum must have a scalar together with a non-scalar periodic part. We discover that certain forms of the superlattice potential, which may be difficult to realize in naturally occurring moiré patterns, allow for the possibility of non-trivial topological transitions. These forms may be achievable using an external superlattice potential that can be created using contemporary experimental techniques. Our work paves the way to realize the quantum Spin Hall effect (QSHE), quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), and even exotic non-Abelian anyons in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE).

Abstract:Graphene/h-BN has emerged as a model van der Waals heterostructure, and the band structure engineering by the superlattice potential has led to various novel quantum phenomena including the self-similar Hofstadter butterfly states. Although newly generated second generation Dirac cones (SDCs) are believed to be crucial for understanding such intriguing phenomena, so far fundamental knowledge of SDCs in such heterostructure, e.g. locations and dispersion of SDCs, the effect of inversion symmetry breaking on the gap opening, still remains highly debated due to the lack of direct experimental results. Here we report first direct experimental results on the dispersion of SDCs in 0$^circ$ aligned graphene/h-BN heterostructure using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our data reveal unambiguously SDCs at the corners of the superlattice Brillouin zone, and at only one of the two superlattice valleys. Moreover, gaps of $approx$ 100 meV and $approx$ 160 meV are observed at the SDCs and the original graphene Dirac cone respectively. Our work highlights the important role of a strong inversion symmetry breaking perturbation potential in the physics of graphene/h-BN, and fills critical knowledge gaps in the band structure engineering of Dirac fermions by a superlattice potential.
