Abstract:Objective The aims of the present study were to explore the occurrence of childhood trauma and importantly to determine the impacts of childhood trauma on psychosocial features in a Chinese sample of young adults.Methods A survey was carried out in a group of 555 university students by using Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Dysfunctional Attitudes Questionnaire (DAS), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). The moderate-severe cut-off scores for CTQ were used to calculate the prevalence of childhood trauma, and then psychosocial features were compared between individuals with and without childhood trauma.Results A proportion of 18.6% of university students had self-reported childhood trauma exposures. Subjects with childhood trauma reported higher scores of SDS, SAS, DAS, and psychoticism and neuroticism dimensions of EPQ (t=4.311-5.551, p<0.001); while lower scores of SSRS and extraversion dimension of EPQ (t=-4.061- -3.039, p<0.01). Regression analyses further revealed that scores of SAS and DAS were positively (Adjusted B=0.211-0.230, p<0.05), while scores of SSRS were negatively (Adjusted B=-0.273- -0.240, p<0.05) associated with specific CTQ scores.Conclusion Childhood trauma is still a common social and psychological problem. Individuals with childhood trauma show much more depression, anxiety, distorted cognition, personality deficits, and lower levels of social support, which may represent the social and psychological vulnerability for developing psychiatric disorders after childhood trauma experiences.
Prevalence and Risk Factors of Anxiety Status among Students Aged 13-26 Years.

Abstract:Previous study revealed that 8%-12% adolescents suffered from various types of anxiety disorders, and which had interfered with adolescent daily life function and affected adolescent social function. The aim of this study was to evaluate anxiety status and its related factors among students aged 13-26 years from Wuhu, China. This was a cross-sectional observational study. A sample of school students who come from a university, four high schools and four middle schools in Wuhu city were recruited, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) was used to measure the anxiety status among students aged 13-26 years, and some demographic characteristics of students also was determined. A total of 5249 students were included in our study. The overall rate of anxiety status among students was 14.1%. A significant difference was observed between anxiety status and sex, mothers education level, dietary and siesta habit (P < 0.05), only-child family, gentle temper, regular breakfast habit, friend support was associated with lower scores on anxiety status. The findings indicated that anxiety status is common among school students. Preventive and treatment strategies are highly recommended.
Anxiety and Depression Symptoms among Youth Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Network Analysis

Abstract:Background: Previous studies have frequently reported a high prevalence of co-occurring anxiety and depression among people who experienced stressful events in childhood. However, few have noted the symptomatic relationship of this comorbidity among childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. Therefore, this study's objectives were as follows: (1) to examine the relationship across symptoms between anxiety and depression among CSA survivors; (2) to compare differences between male and female network structures among CSA survivors. Methods: A total of 63 Universities and Colleges in Jilin Province, China, covered 96,218 participants in this study, a sub-set data of which met the criteria of CSA was analyzed with the network analysis. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), measured CSA. Anxiety was measured by the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and depression was measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The sex difference between anxiety and depression among CSA survivors was compared. Results: 3,479 college students reported the experience of CSA (CTQ-SF total scores ≥ 8), with a prevalence of 3.62% (95% CI: 3.50-3.73%). Among CSA survivors, control worry, sad mood, and energy were central and bridge symptoms of the anxiety and depression network. Meanwhile, male CSA survivors appeared to have a stronger correlation between guilt and suicide, but female CSA survivors seemed to have a stronger correlation between control worry and suicide. Moreover, the edge of control worry-relax-afraid was stronger in the male network, while the edge of restless-relax was stronger in the female network. Conclusion: Control worry, sad mood, and energy are crucial to offer targeted treatment and to relieve anxiety and depression symptoms for CSA survivors. Guilt needs more attention for male CSA survivors, while control worry remains more important for female CSA survivors to reduce suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.
Co-occurrence subgroups of child sexual abuse, health risk behaviors and their associations among secondary school students in China

Abstract:Abstract Background Little is known on the co-occurrence and heterogeneity of child sexual abuse (CSA) or health risk behavior (HRB) prevalence nor the associations among the victims. Objectives To detect the prevalence and subgroups of adolescents reporting CSAs or HRBs, and to examine the association between the subgroups. Methods Participants were secondary school students in a national survey in China ( N = 8746). Self-reported CSA and HRB experiences were collected through a computer assisted questionnaire. Prevalence and confidence intervals were calculated. Multigroup latent class analysis (LCA) was used to examine latent subgroups of CSA and HRB. Dual latent class regression analysis was used to examine the association between CSA and HRB classes. Results A total of 8746 students participated in our study. The prevalence of having ever experienced any of the reported seven CSA items was 12.9%. The preferred LCA model consisted of a three-class CSA latent variable, i.e. “Low CSAs”(95.7% of the total respondents), “Verbal or exhibitionism CSAs”(3.3%), and “high multiple CSAs” (1.1%); and a three-class HRB latent variable, i.e. “Low HRBs”(70.5%), “externalizing HRBs” (20.7%), and “internalizing HRBs” (8.7%). Students in the “Verbal or exhibitionism CSAs” or “high multiple CSAs” classes had higher probabilities of being in “externalizing HRBs” or “internalizing HRBs” classes. The probabilities were higher in “high multiple CSAs” class(male externalizing OR 4.05, 95%CI 1.71–9.57; internalizing OR 11.77, 95%CI 4.76–29.13; female externalizing OR 4.97, 95%CI 1.99–12.44; internalizing OR 9.87, 95%CI 3.71–26.25) than those in “Verbal or exhibitionism CSA”(male externalizing OR 2.51, 95%CI 1.50–4.20; internalizing OR 3.08, 95%CI 1.48–6.40; female externalizing OR 2.53, 95%CI 1.63–3.95; internalizing OR 6.05, 95%CI 3.73–9.80). Conclusions Prevalence of CSA items varies. Non-contact CSAs are the most common forms of child sexual abuse among Chinese school students. There are different latent class co-occurrence patterns of CSA items or HRB items among the respondents. CSA experiences are in association with HRB experiences and the associations between latent classes are dose-responded. Multi-victimization has more significantly negative effects. The results could help identify high-risk subgroups and promote more nuanced interventions addressing adverse experiences and risk behaviors among at-risk adolescents.

[Prevalence of Childhood Sexual Abuse among 2508 College Students in 6 Provinces of China].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in college students and to explore the association of CSA with youth mental health problem.METHODS:A retrospective survey was conducted among 2508 students (females 1360, males 1148) in Nov. 2003 to Mar. 2004. The students were from 6 colleges/universities in Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Anhui provinces of China.RESULTS:Of the 2508 students, 24.8% of females and 17.6% of males reported one or more types of nonphysical contact CSA (females 20.0% vs. males 14.6%) or/and physical contact CSA (females 14.1% vs. males 7.8%) before the age of 16 years. Risk of any CSA was not associated with the existence of siblings (one-child vs. two-or more child families), rural/non-rural residence during childhood, or parental education. Compared with their peers who had no CSA, the students with CSA showed significantly higher mean scores of psychological symptoms of somatization, obsessiveness, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation and psychoticism.CONCLUSION:The problem of CSA was not uncommon and there was a significant correlation between CSA experience and students mental health problems. More attention should be paid on CSA prevention and provision of health services for the victims.
Sex and Urban–Rural Differences in the Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse and Mental Health among Chinese College Students

Abstract:This study aimed to reveal sex and urban–rural differences in the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and mental health among Chinese college students. The study used data from the “National College Student Survey on Sexual and Reproductive Health 2019”, a cross-sectional study conducted in all 31 provinces of mainland China. Weighted logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the association between CSA (noncontact CSA, contact CSA, and penetrative CSA) and mental health (suicide attempts and mental disorders). Among 49,728 students, 39.42% of the male participants and 43.55% of the female participants had ever experienced CSA. According to the OR results of logistic regression analysis, compared to females, males in the contact CSA group (AOR: 3.49, 95% CI: 1.95–6.23) and the penetrative CSA group (AOR: 8.79, 95% CI: 3.15–24.52) had higher odds of suicide attempts. Participants from rural and suburban areas that were categorized in the penetrative CSA group were more likely to report suicide attempts (rural: AOR: 4.01, 95% CI: 1.51–10.62, suburban AOR: 4.86, 95% CI: 2.52–9.36) and mental disorders (rural: AOR: 4.01, 95% CI: 1.51–10.62, suburban: AOR: 4.86, 95% CI: 2.52–9.36). In conclusion, the findings revealed a high prevalence of CSA in both sexes and reported that males are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of CSA. In addition, we also found that undergraduates growing up in rural and suburban areas are more vulnerable to the adverse psychological effects of CSA. Policymakers should pay more attention to this vulnerable population and implement effective measures to alleviate mental trauma.

Abstract:Introduction: Prior studies have explored the prevalence of social anxiety disorders and found that childhood major adverse experiences increased the risk of social anxiety. However, few studies analyzed features of social anxiety and explored the mediation mechanism of the relationship between childhood major adverse experiences and social anxiety in early adulthood.Methods: Two thousand seven hundred and fifty-nine college students from Hunan, China participated in the survey-based study. They completed questionnaires on major adverse childhood experiences, social anxiety symptoms, and a sense of security during a study conducted from 2017 to 2018.Results: 1) 33.38% of the students reported experiencing at least one social anxiety symptom; the highest detection rate (20.22%) was social anxiety symptoms related to participants' nervousness when in large groups. 2) Females and individuals who consumed alcohol in the past year and individuals with a poor physical condition had a significantly higher risk of having social anxiety symptoms (p<0.05). 3) Childhood major adverse events increased the risk of some social anxiety symptoms, especially experiencing 3 or more adverse events (p<0.05). 4) A sense of security mediated the relationship between childhood major adverse events and social anxiety symptoms.Conclusions: Extensive detection rate of social anxiety symptoms existed among college students, early adversities increased the risk of social anxiety in early adulthood, and the relationship between and childhood major adversity and social anxiety was affected by sense of security.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The adverse health consequences of premarital sex and childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are both global public health problems. Based on a random sample of college students from a Chinese city, this study investigated the relationship between CSA severity and premarital sex among students, focusing on sex differences. Methods A total of 2722 college students from 4 schools in Luzhou were recruited by multistage random sampling. Self-administered questionnaires were used to measure CSA experiences and premarital sex. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyse the relationship between CSA and premarital sex. Results The prevalence of CSA was 9.39%, and that of mild, moderate and severe CSA was 4.04%, 2.90% and 2.46%, respectively. The premarital sex reporting rate was 22.42%. After adjusting for confounding variables, CSA was positively associated with premarital sex. Notably, a cumulative effect of CSA on premarital sex was observed among students. Further stratification analyses showed that males who experienced CSA had a higher premarital sex rate than females, and this sex difference was also observed among students with different CSA severities. Conclusion CSA and its severity were associated with premarital sex among college students. Furthermore, this association was stronger for males than females. Therefore, it is important to emphasize CSA prevention, especially for boys. These findings can promote understanding of the effects of CSA on premarital sex, and CSA prevention and intervention strategies should consider CSA severity and sex differences.

Self-reported Patterns of Childhood Abuse and COVID-19 Related Depression and Problematic Behaviors in Adolescents: A Longitudinal Study from China

Abstract:Background: Extant studies have examined the role of childhood abuse experiences in adolescents' mental and behavioral reactions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it remained unclear whether different childhood abuse patterns had sensitizing or steeling effects on these psychological and behavioral problems. Objective: To elucidate the sensitizing or steeling effect of childhood abuse on subsequent adverse experiences, the current study examined patterns of childhood abuse and assessed their effects on adolescents' depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Participants and setting: In total, 1890 adolescents (969 females, mean age 14 years; 187 from a single-parent family, 858 were the only child in their family) were selected to complete self-report questionnaires at three time points (November 2019, November 2020, and November 2021). Methods: Latent profile analysis was used to identify patterns of childhood abuse, and linear regression analysis was used to assess the predictive effects of childhood abuse patterns on depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Results: The latent profile analysis identified five distinct groups: high physical/emotional abuse group, moderate physical/emotional abuse group, high emotional abuse group, ambivalent abuse group, and low physical/emotional abuse group. Compared with those in the low physical/ emotional abuse group, adolescents in the high and moderate physical/emotional abuse groups had a lasting positive association with problematic behaviors, and adolescents in the ambivalent abuse group had a long-term positive association with depressive symptoms during the pandemic. Conclusions: Preexisting childhood abuse had a sensitizing rather than a steeling effect on depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Furthermore, the longterm sensitizing effects mainly occurred in the high and moderate physical/emotional abuse and ambivalent abuse groups.
Complex PTSD in Chinese Adolescents Exposed to Childhood Trauma: A Latent Profile Analysis

Abstract:Although numerous studies have supported the idea that complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is a distinct disorder from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and demonstrated that childhood interpersonal trauma is an important risk factor for CPTSD, few studies have examined the validity of CPTSD in adolescents, especially in non-Western contexts. Moreover, the question of which form of child maltreatment plays the most important role in predicting CPTSD, and how CPTSD is associated with psychological health, physical health, and social function among adolescents, is not clear. The present study used a Chinese high school student sample with childhood trauma experiences ( N = 395) to address these questions. Latent profile analysis indicated that there were four subgroups in our sample: Low symptoms (54.43%), Disturbance of self-organization (DSO, 18.99%), PTSD (15.95%), and CPTSD (10.63%). Further analysis revealed that emotional abuse was an important risk factor for CPTSD. In addition, the CPTSD class showed the highest levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as the lowest levels of life satisfaction and physical health. This study revealed that CPTSD is a distinct disorder from PTSD in Chinese adolescents exposed to childhood trauma. It provides evidence that emotional abuse might be an important risk factor for CPTSD, and demonstrates that CPTSD is accompanied by serious psychological and physical consequences in adolescents. We suggest that parents and educators should focus more on adolescents’ emotional needs, avoid using negative ways such as verbal violence to express love, and pay more attention to adolescents’ DSO symptoms in parenting, teaching practices and clinical interventions.

Association Between Childhood and Adolescent Sexual Abuse Experiences and High-Risk Sexual Behaviors among Chinese Youth

Abstract:Introduction: Adolescents are at high risk for negative health outcomes associated with high-risk sexual behaviors (HRSBs), and researchers have attempted to identify factors that influence such behavior so that meaningful prevention and intervention programs may be developed. Aim: To investigate the associations between CSA experience and HRSBs in Chinese youth aged 15-24 years old. Methods: Data were from the Survey of Youth Access to Reproductive Health in China, a national sample survey conducted in 2009. The following behaviors were classified as HRSBs: condom non-use during the first sexual experience, having sex with multiple partners, taking part in casual sex, engaging in commercial sex, taking part in anal sex, and condom non-use during the most recent sexual encounter. Differences in HRSBs between the sexes were examined. The chi(2) test and binary logistic regression were used to estimate the association between CSA experience and HRSBs. Main Outcome Measure: The sexual behaviors of condom non-use during the first sexual experience, sexual activity with multiple partners, taking part in casual sex, engaging in commercial sex (defined as paying or receiving money/gifts in exchange for sex), taking part in anal sex, and condom non-using during the most recent sexual intercourse were classified as HRSBs. Results: 4,974 Sexually active youth were included in this study, 150 respondents (3.0%) reported CSA experience, and 3,950 (79.4%) sexually active youth had engaged in at least 1 type of HRSBs. The odds of having sex with multiple partners (odds ratio [OR] 4.31, 95% CI 3.07-6.07), casual sex (OR 3.65, 95% CI 2.55-5.24), commercial sex (OR 7.43, 95% CI 5.13-10.77), anal copulation (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.57-4.12), or any of these HRSBs (OR 5.02, 95% CI 2.33-10.80) were significantly higher among those who had experienced CSA. There was a gender-specific difference in the associations of CSA with different types of HRSBs. Conclusion: Sexual abuse experience in childhood is highly correlated with HRSBs among Chinese youth, and the pattern of this association differs between males and females. Public knowledge and social assistance systems needs to be improved for children and youth in China. Gender-specific counter-measures may be more efficient for interventions. Abstract:BACKGROUND:Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a serious public health problem worldwide.OBJECTIVES:We reported the prevalence of CSA and examined its association with risky sexual behaviors and adverse reproductive health outcomes among college students in China.PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING:Participants were 17,966 college students from 130 colleges in Eastern, Central, and Western China, who completed the online questionnaire in January-August 2015.METHODS:Data were obtained from a cluster-random Internet-based survey. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed: risky sexual behaviors and adverse reproductive health outcomes were outcome variables, and various types of CSA were predictor variables, while adjusting for socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics.RESULTS:The overall prevalence of any type of CSA was 27.5%. Most perpetrators were friends/acquaintances (34.6%) or intimate partners (24.7%) of the victims. Respondents who reported penetrative CSA were strongly associated with regular unprotected sex (odds ratio (OR): 3.0, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2-4.0), early sexual debut (OR: 5.5, 95% CI: 3.3-9.1), having genital tract symptoms in the last 12 months (OR: 5.0, 95% CI: 4.1-6.0), unintended pregnancy (OR: 6.2, 95% CI: 4.2-9.0), and induced abortion (OR: 5.5, 95% CI: 3.7-8.2) (for boys, the survey asked about history of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion of their sexual partners). A dose-response relationship was found across non-contact, contact, and penetrative CSA.CONCLUSIONS:CSA experience may increase the likelihood of risky sexual behaviors and adverse reproductive health outcomes in victims' early adulthood.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:This study was designed to ascertain the prevalence of child sexual abuse (CSA) among female students of a medical school and to explore the impact of CSA on the mental health and health related risk behaviors of the victims being sexually abused and to provide useful reference for CSA prevention.METHODS:A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 892 female students from a medical school by anonymous self-administered questionnaire during Oct. 2002. The questionnaire used for this study mainly included (1) general demographic information; (2) sexual experiences; (3) 12 forms of CSA. In this study, cases of CSA were defined as those who answered positively to one or more of the 12 questions relating to childhood sexual experiences (including non-physical contact CSA and physical contact CSA) occurring before age 16 with a person when a child did not want to. (4) Center for Epidemiologic Studies (CES)-Depression Scale; (5) Self Esteem Scale; (6) Risk Behaviors; (7) Health status' self-evaluation. Survey procedures were designed to protect students' privacy by allowing anonymous and voluntary participation. Students were seated separately, completed the self-administered questionnaire in their classrooms during a regular class period. Respondents were encouraged to participate in this survey, but given the sensitive nature of the subject, they could skip portion of the questionnaire if they were not comfortable with the questions. The completed questionnaires were sealed in envelopes by students themselves (the envelope was distributed with questionnaire at the same time), and then collected together. Data were analysed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software. Frequency, percentage, Chi-square test and t-test of statistics were used to analyze the CSA prevalence and explore the influence of CSA on mental health of students.RESULTS:Among 892 female students, 25.6% reported having experienced CSA (any one of 12 forms non-physical contact and physical contact CSA) before the age of 16 years. The median age at first episode was 12 years. Comparing the rates of CSA of female students in different parents' education level, between one-child in a family and more than one-child in a family, among rural area, county and city, there were no significant differences. Compared to the students who had not experienced CSA, the students who had experienced CSA reported higher levels of depression (CES-D score 18.78 vs. 16.68, t = 2.81, P = 0.005), lower levels of health status self-evaluation (score 3.53 vs. 3.78, t = 2.94, P = 0.003); higher proportion of subjects who reported drinking alcohol and having ever smoked during the past 30 days (drinking 32.7% vs. 22.9%, chi(2) = 8.51, P = 0.004; smoking 8.8% vs. 4.4%, chi(2) = 6.17, P = 0.013); a higher percentage engaged in sexual intercourse (19.3% vs. 5.9%, chi(2) = 33.48, P = 0.000); ever seriously considered attempting suicide (23.7% vs. 15.4%, chi(2) = 8.09, P = 0.004), making a plan about how would attempt suicide (17.9% vs. 9.7%, chi(2) = 10.62, P = 0.001), being threatened or injured by someone with a weapon such as a knife, or club on school property (3.5% vs. 1.1%, chi(2) = 6.17, P = 0.013), being involved in physical fight (16.7% vs. 5.6%, chi(2) = 27.05, P = 0.000) during the 12 months preceding the survey.CONCLUSIONS:The results further showed that the CSA of girls in our country is not uncommon, as reported before in our country and in the other countries and is associated with poor mental health and risky behaviors. The findings highlight the urgent need for the further research into CSA epidemiological characteristics, health services for the victims abused sexually, sexual abuse prevention programs in schools and the general community in China.
[A Retrospective Survey in Child Sexual Abuse among 565 University Students].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To examine the child sexual abuse (CSA) experiences and its associations with self-reported mental health status and risky behaviors among university students. METHODS A retrospective survey was conducted in 565 undergraduate students, from a university in northeast China, by anonymous self-administered questionnaire in September 2003. Research subjects were asked on a series of retrospective questions about CSA, as well as questions on depression, self-esteem, symptoms of psychological disease and risky behaviours. RESULTS Prevalence of any unwanted sexual experience before the age of 16 years was 20.0% for females and 14.3% for males. 11.3% of females and 7.7% of males reported ever having had at least one type of physical contact abuse. The students with CSA were with more depression, lower health self-evaluation; more symptoms in somatization, hostility, obsessive and anxiety. More students reported to have experienced sexual intercourse, been drunk, and suicide ideation than unaffected students. CONCLUSION The results indicated that unwanted child sexual abuse was not uncommon, and associated with poor mental health. The findings highlighted the urgent need for sexual abuse prevention programs and mental health services for victims in China.
Subgrouping of anxiety symptoms and stress levels in Chinese adolescents: results of a latent profile analysis

Abstract:The relationship between anxiety symptoms and stress among adolescents has received considerable attention in psychological research. Nonetheless, traditional studies predominantly employ a variable-centered approach, overlooking the potential existence of distinct subgroups within the adolescent population that exhibit unique patterns of anxiety and stress. This study aimed to uncover such subgroupings among Chinese adolescents through latent profile analysis (LPA), utilizing the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC) and the Adolescent Life Events Questionnaire (ALEQ). The sample comprised 1,027 students aged 14-19 years ( M = 16.26, SD = 0.90) from two middle schools in China. The analysis revealed a three-class solution as the most fitting model, delineating subgroups with Low stress/Low symptoms (51.6%), Low stress/High symptoms (37.2%), and High stress/Low symptoms (11.2%). Subsequent multinomial logistic regression analyses explored the associations between subgroup membership and various demographic and psychological factors, including gender, age, residential background, depression levels, family income, and parents' marital status and educational levels. The findings indicated a higher prevalence of girls in the "Low stress/High symptom" group and boys in the "High stress/Low symptom" group. Moreover, adolescents from urban areas were more likely to fall into the "High stress/Low symptoms" group, and a strong correlation was observed between higher levels of depression and increased stress or anxiety. These results underscore the importance of incorporating assessments of stress and anxiety into the clinical evaluation of adolescents to enhance the efficacy of psychotherapeutic and preventive interventions.

Abstract:Abstract Background In recent years, the number of adolescents engaging in premarital sex has increased, and an increasing number of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) cases have been reported in China. Many studies have indicated that CSA has a well-established association with risky sexual activities. However, only a limited number of studies have explored possible reasons for this association among middle school students, a population that may engage in premarital sex, which is critical for the development of interventions to prevent risky sexual behavior. Based on random samples of middle school students from a Chinese city, this article investigated the relationship between CSA and students’ premarital sexual permissiveness (PSP). Methods In a cross-sectional study conducted between 2016 and 2017 in Luzhou, China, 2292 middle school and high school students aged 12–18 years were recruited by multistage random sampling. All students were administered anonymous questionnaires. Multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze the relationship between CSA and PSP. Results The prevalence of CSA was 15.4% (354/2292; 95% CI: 14–16.9%). A higher percentage of male respondents (18.2%) than female respondents (12.9%) had experienced CSA. A positive association between CSA and PSP was found among students. Respondents who had suffered CSA exhibited greater PSP, and this relationship was observed in the male sample, female sample and the total student sample in Luzhou ( β = − 3.76, P < 0.05; β = − 2.79, P < 0.05; and β = − 2.84, P < 0.05, respectively). Respondents who had suffered CSA were also more likely to express a double standard about premarital sex (odds ratio [ OR ] =1.41, P < 0.05), especially among male students (odds ratio [ OR ] =1.63, P < 0.05). Conclusions Sex differences in CSA and the relationship between CSA and PSP were significant among this large sample of middle school students in Luzhou (China). The findings suggest that experiencing CSA may be closely related to youth attitudes toward premarital sex, especially among males. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the prevention of CSA and provide adolescent reproductive health programs to reduce the impact of CSA on sexual cognition and attitude, prevent premarital sex and promote positive attitudes toward sexual equality for middle school students.

Abstract:Objectives: To learn about the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) among adolescents and to explore CSA-related influencing factors. Methods: Five hundred and twenty-eight students from a college and a technical secondary school in Hebei province were surveyed by self-administered questionnaire anonymously in Dec. 2004. Results: The survey revealed that 18.9% of students had experienced one or more forms of the following sexual abuse before the age of 16: verbal sexual harassment (9.1%); genital exposure (5.3%); touch or fondling of the private parts (10.0%); attempted sexual intercourse (2.8%) and imposed sexual intercourse (2.1%). Multinomial Logistic Regression Analysis showed that the CSA experiences were not significantly associated with the gender, the number of children in a family, childhood residential areas (rural or non-rural) and their parents' education level. Most of the molesters were non-adults familiar to the children. Conclusion: CSA problem is common in our country, which highlights the necessity of CSA prevention education in schools and communities.

Abstract:【Objective】 To investigate the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse(CSA) in female junior college students and explore the implication of being abused. 【Methods】 A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 358 female junior college students by anonymous self-administered questionnaire in November 2003.They were asked a series of retrospective questions about sexual harassment and physical abuse as a child. 【Results】 Among this sample,73(20.4%) had experienced CSA(positive in any one of ten forms of non-physical contact or physical contact before the age of 16).Six(1.7%) experienced abuse involving attempted intercourse and two(0.6%) experienced abuse involving completed intercourse.The age at first episodes of 50.7% CSA was 11 years old.When she was 16 years ago,whether her father or mother excessive drinking and what family members lived with her was concerned with occur of CSA.Comparing those with no history of CSA,the victims had higher score in SCL-90,higher score in depression and anxiety factor. 【Conclusion】 Childhood sexual abuse may be not uncommon in girls and has negative influence on mental health of the victim.
