Abstract:Heterostructures constructed between different metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are effective strategies for the development of high-performance gas sensors. Here, a feasible hydrothermal approach was developed to obtain a special dendritic hierarchical CuO/Co3O4 nanowire heterostructure that is favored for ethylene glycol (EG) adsorption. With the maximum response (6.3) to 100 ppm EG at 130 ºC, the hierarchical CuO/Co3O4 heterostructure-based gas sensor stands out for its exceptional gas sensing capabilities. This remarkable enhancement of EG sensing performance could be ascribed to the formation of a special CuO/Co3O4 core-shell heterojunction structure. With the aid of precise band alignment, the heterojunction-depletion model was able to explain the mechanism in detail. The prospective candidates for various p–p heterojunctions intended for high performance gas sensors will be motivated by this work.
Design of Highly Sensitive and Selective Ethanol Sensor Based on Α-Fe2o3/nb2o5 Heterostructure.

Abstract:The introduction of heterostructures is a new approach in gas sensing due to their easy and quick transport of charges. Herein, facile hydrothermal and solid-state techniques are employed to synthesize an α-Fe2O3/Nb2O5 heterostructure. The morphology, microstructure, crystallinity and surface composition of the synthesized heterostructures are investigated by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses. The successful fabrication of the heterostructures was achieved via the mutual incorporation of α-Fe2O3 nanorods with Nb2O5 interconnected nanoparticles (INPs). A sensor based on the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure with a high surface area exhibited enhanced gas-sensing features, maintaining high selectivity and sensitivity, and a considerable recovery percentage towards ethanol gas. The sensing response of the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure at lower operating temperature (160 °C) is around nine times higher than a pure Nb2O5 (INP) sensor at 180 °C with the flow of 100 ppm ethanol gas. The sensors also show excellent selectivity, good long-term stability and a rapid response/recovery time (8s/2s, respectively) to ethanol. The superior electronic conductivity and upgraded sensitivity performance of gas sensors based on the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure are attributed due to its unique structural features, high specific surface area and the synergic effect of the n–n heterojunction. The promising results demonstrate the potential application of the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure as a good sensing material for the fabrication of ethanol sensors.
Highly Selective and Sensitive Detection of Volatile Sulfur Compounds by Ionically Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:High selectivity to specific analyte is essential for chemical sensors but difficult to achieve. For most chemical sensors, although the response to the target analyte can be more significant than interference analytes, they still show obvious responses to the interference analytes. Here, highly selective chemical sensors are developed with negligible responses to other interference vapors. Instead of the widely investigated electronically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs), ionically conductive MOFs (IC-MOFs) are used as the sensing materials, and the unique interaction between the ion charge carrier and the analyte is utilized to achieve high sensing selectivity. Through the modulation of the metal nodes (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg) and organic ligands (H2TCPP, H2THPP, H4BTEC), sensor arrays based on a set of IC-MOFs are fabricated and achieve highly selective detection toward volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). H2S and CH3SH can be selectively detected at concentrations down to 1 ppb and 1 ppm, respectively. The facile preparation and low cost endow the device with disposability. These results suggest new approaches for the development of highly selective chemical sensors.

Abstract:Chemiresistive sensing of gas molecules has been widely investigated for application in medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, showing high sensitivity and low limits of detection toward various volatile organic compounds. While metal oxide semiconductors offer numerous advantages, such as ease of fabrication, high sensitivity, and fast response times, they often suffer of high insufficient selectivity. Here, we report the engineering of a low-temperature sensing platform consisting of nanostructured zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) over InP semiconducting nanowire (NW) arrays. These devices were fabricated via top-down etching of InP NW arrays, aerosol deposition of flame-made ZnO nanoparticles, and their chemical vapor conversion to ZIF-8. The presence of ZIF-8 significantly enhances the device sensitivity over that of the pristine InP NW arrays by providing a high density of adsorption sites and faster reduction kinetics. Our optimal sensors can detect NO2 in a large concentration range from 0.1 to 8 ppm, in addition to showing relatively higher responses toward various gas molecules, including CO2, methanol, ethanol, acetone, and propane, in comparison with pristine InP NW sensors. Given the large family of MOFs with controllable pore size and chemical composition, our findings provide a flexible approach for engineering the selectivity of highly sensitive and miniaturized gas sensors for integration in miniaturized devices.

Abstract:Achieving high sensitivity in detecting trace concentrations of toxic gases, particularly under room temperature (RT) conditions, remains a significant challenge. Herein, a 0D-2D heterostructure that can detect ppb-level H 2 S at RT is proposed by self-assembling cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Co-MOFs with high specific surface areas can capture and concentrate target gas molecules, enhancing host-guest interactions and thereby boosting the selectivity and sensitivity. MXene nanosheets with high conductivity enable rapid electron transport at heterointerface, hence efficiently accelerating the reaction kinetics. Thereby, the as-prepared chemiresistive gas sensor based on Co-MOF@MXene 0D–2D heterostructure possessed excellent sensitivity against interfering gases and delivered an excellent response value of 11.1 to 400 ppb H 2 S at RT. The judicious design of MOF@MXene heterostructure may spur advanced hybrid material systems for superior sensing applications.

However, metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) suffer from poor selectivity and single MOS@metal organic framework (MOF) core-shell nanocomposites are greatly limited due to the intrinsic low sensitivity of MOF shells. To simultaneously improve both selectivity and sensitivity, heterostructured α-Fe2 O3 @ZnO@ZIF-8 core-shell nanowires (NWs) are meticulously synthesized with the assistance of atomic layer deposition. The ZIF-8 shell with regular pores and special surface functional groups is attractive for excellent selectivity and the heterostructured α-Fe2 O3 @ZnO core with an additional electron depletion layer is promising with enhanced sensitivity compared to a single MOS core. As a result, the heterostructured α-Fe2 O3 @ZnO@ZIF-8 core-shell NWs achieve remarkable H2 S sensing performance with a high response (Rair /Rgas = 32.2 to 10 ppm H2 S), superior selectivity, fast response/recovery speed (18.0/31.8 s), excellent long-term stability (at least over 3 months), and relatively low limit of detection (down to 200 ppb) at low operating temperature of 200 °C, far beyond α-Fe2 O3 @ZIF-8 or α-Fe2 O3 @ZnO core-shell NWs. Furthermore, a micro-electromechanical system-based H2 S gas sensor system with low power consumption is developed, holding great application potential in smart cities.
Solution-Processable Ni3(HITP)2/MXene Heterostructures for Ppb-Level Gas Detection

Abstract:Developing sensitive metal-organic framework (MOF) systems to overcome the ubiquitous trade-off between porosity and conductivity remains a formidable yet sought-after endeavor. This pursuit is of great significance for the development of MOF-based chemiresistive sensors with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, we present an innovative template assisted strategy that utilizes the two-dimensional properties and good conductivity of MXene nanosheets, as well as lattice matching between MXene (Nb2C) and selected Ni-3(HITP)(2), to achieve controllable self-assembly of Ni-3(HITP)(2) on MXene sheets. This results in Ni-3(HITP)(2)/MXene (HITP: 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaaminotriphenylene) heterostructures with considerable conductivity, porosity, and solution processability. The powder and film electrical conductivity are 4.8 x 10(3) and 5.3 x 10(5) S m(-1), respectively, and the BET specific surface area can reach 797.8 m(2) g(-1). It is worth noting that excellent solution processability helps to prepare large-area films (23 cm x 9 cm) with good uniformity. Gas sensors based on Ni-3(HITP)(2)/MXene heterostructures exhibit high sensitivity (LOD similar to 5 ppb) and selectivity towards ultratrace ethanol at room temperature, setting a new benchmark. Such sensing behavior stems from the strong coupling of Ni-3(HITP)(2)/MXene heterostructures and their enhanced interaction with ethanol, evidenced by experimental results and theoretical calculations. Real-time respiratory sensing assessments underscore their practicality in healthcare monitoring. This straightforward approach simplifies the integration of MOF-related materials on miniaturized devices with outstanding performance.
Synthesis of 1D Α-Moo3/0d ZnO Heterostructure Nanobelts with Enhanced Gas Sensing Properties

Abstract:Exploring high-performance sensing materials is ultra-important for safety control. Herein, 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and its microstructure is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is confirmed that the as-prepared nanocomposites are constituted by 1D alpha-MoO3 nanobelts (200-300 nm in width), with the surface loaded with fine ZnO nanoparticles. Sensing properties of the alpha-MoO3 and 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites to ethanol are measured and compared. Interestingly, the ZnO-decorated alpha-MoO3 nanobelts exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity to ethanol at relatively low operating temperature (250 degrees C) when compared with that of the raw alpha-MoO3 nanobelts, indicating a good candidate of 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites for future ethanol detection. Facile Synthesis of ZnO/WO3 Nanocomposite Porous Films for High-Performance Gas Sensing of Multiple VOCs

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments have typical features of multiple components, high concentration, and long duration. The development of gas sensors with high sensitivity to multiple VOCs is of great significance to protect human health. Herein, we proposed a sensitive ZnO/WO3 composite chemi-resistive sensor facilely fabricated via a sacrificial template approach. Based on the transferable properties of self-assembled monolayer colloidal crystal (MCC) templates, two-dimensional honeycomb-like ordered porous ZnO/WO3 sensing matrixes were constructed in situ on commercial ceramic tube substrates with curved and rough surfaces. The nanocomposite thin films are about 250 nm in thickness with large-scale structural consistency and integrity, which facilitates characteristic responses with highly sensitivity and reliability. Furthermore, the nanocomposite sensor shows simultaneous responses to multiple VOCs that commonly exist in daily life with an obvious suppression sensing for traditional flammable gases. Particularly, a detection limit of 0.1 ppm with a second-level response/recovery time can be achieved, which is beneficial for real-time air quality assessments. We proposed a heterojunction-induced sensing enhancement mechanism for the ZnO/WO3 nanocomposite film in which the formation of abundant heterojunctions between ZnO and WO3 NPs significantly increases the thickness of the electron depletion layer in the bulk film and improves the formation of active oxygen species on the surface, which is conducive to enhanced responses for reducing VOC gases. This work not only provides a simple approach for the fabrication of high-performance gas sensors but also opens an achievable avenue for air quality assessment based on VOC concentration detection.

Abstract:The ever-increasing concerns over indoor/outdoor air quality, industrial gas leakage, food freshness, and medical diagnosis require miniaturized gas sensors with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, stability, low power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and long lifetime. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring structural diversity, large specific surface area, controllable pore size/geometry, and host-guest interactions, hold great promises for fabricating various MOF-based devices for diverse applications including gas sensing. Tremendous progress has been made in the past decade on the fabrication of MOF-based sensors with elevated sensitivity and selectivity toward various analytes due to their preconcentrating and molecule-sieving effects. Although several reviews have recently summarized different aspects of this field, a comprehensive review focusing on MOF-based gas sensors is absent. In this review, the latest advance of MOF-based gas sensors relying on different transduction mechanisms, for example, chemiresistive, capacitive/impedimetric, field-effect transistor or Kelvin probe-based, mass-sensitive, and optical ones are comprehensively summarized. The latest progress for making large-area MOF films essential to the mass-production of relevant gas sensors is also included. The structural and compositional features of MOFs are intentionally correlated with the sensing performance. Challenges and opportunities for the further development and practical applications of MOF-based gas sensors are also given.

MOF-5 derived 3D ZnO/Ag micro-octahedra for ultrahigh response and selective triethylamine detection at low temperature

Abstract:The leakage of raw material triethylamine in the process of chemical production causes harm and damage to health and environment. Therefore, the development of triethylamine sensors with high response and selectivity is urgently needed. Using metal organic frames (MOF) as templates has become a new strategy to prepare nano structural metal oxides based gas sensing materials, which leads to a high specific surface area and enhanced gas sensing performances. In this work, the metal organic framework MOF-5 decorated with large Ag particles is prepared by a conventional one-step solvothermal method. Then 3D ZnO/Ag micro-octahedra assembled from ZnO nanosheets are derived by subsequent calcination. The 3D ZnO/Ag micro-octahedra based sensor exhibits excellent gas sensing performance toward triethylamine, including an ultrahigh response of 293.8 to 10 ppm and selectivity, as well as a low operating temperature of 200°C, and long-time stability. The excellent triethylamine gas sensing performance can be attributed to the synergy effect between oxygen vacancies and the catalytic spillover effect generated by the noble metal silver. This work shows that MOF derived hierarchical 3D ZnO/Ag micro-octahedra provides a great potential for triethylamine monitoring.

Abstract:"One key to one lock" hybrid sensor configuration is rationally designed and demonstrated as a direct effective route for the target-gas-specific, highly sensitive, and promptly responsive chemical gas sensing for room temperature operation in a complex ambient background. The design concept is based on three criteria: (i) quasi-one-dimensional metal oxide nanostructures as the sensing platform which exhibits good electron mobility and chemical and thermal stability; (ii) deep enhancement-mode field-effect transistors (E-mode FETs) with appropriate threshold voltages to suppress the nonspecific sensitivity to all gases (decouple the selectivity and sensitivity away from nanowires); (iii) metal nanoparticle decoration onto the nanostructure surface to introduce the gas specific selectivity and sensitivity to the sensing platform. In this work, using Mg-doped In2O3 nanowire E-mode FET sensor arrays decorated with various discrete metal nanoparticles (i.e., Au, Ag, and Pt) as illustrative prototypes here further confirms the feasibility of this design. Particularly, the Au decorated sensor arrays exhibit more than 3 orders of magnitude response to the exposure of 100 ppm CO among a mixture of gases at room temperature. The corresponding response time and detection limit are as low as ∼4 s and ∼500 ppb, respectively. All of these could have important implications for this "one key to one lock" hybrid sensor configuration which potentially open up a rational avenue to the design of advanced-generation chemical sensors with unprecedented selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract:Because of their ultra-high surface area, large porosity and excellent structural tailorability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as outstanding candidates among sensing materials for hazardous gas detection. However, most of MOFs-based sensing films show weak film adhesion and low conductivity due to the poor formation ability of MOFs films by traditional sensor fabrication methods as well as the intrinsic insulating character of these MOFs. In this work, we propose a novel strategy to directly grow robust gas-sensing films based on pristine MOFs arrays (ZIF-67 nanosheets) in-situ on the surface of ceramic substrates. To improve the conductivity of MOFs arrays, anion-exchange method is applied to couple Prussian blue analogue (PBA) on the surface of ZIF-67 arrays. Structural characterization revealed that this permutation reaction can significantly improve the conductivity of the MOF films while their sheet-like structures can be mainly remained. Benefiting from the robust structure and improved conductivity, the as-designed ZIF-67/PBA films exhibited superior sensing performances such as good reproducibility, high response value (Rg/Ra = 11.7), and fast response/recovery speed (5/182 s) towards triethylamine. This work provides a new strategy to fabricate MOFs gas sensors and paves a new way to modulate the conductivity of MOF films.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors based on heterostructured p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell nanowires (NWs) with precisely controlled shell thickness were synthesized through a sequential process combining a solution processing and atomic layer deposition. The gas sensing devices were fabricated on micro-electromechanical systems, which has triggered great research interest for low power consumption and highly integrated design. The designed p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NW structured gas sensors exhibited superior gas sensing performance, which is closely related to the thickness of the SnO2 shell. Specifically, p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NWs with a 24 nm thick SnO2 shell displayed a high sensitivity (R-a/R-g) of 2.42, whose rate of resistance change (i.e. 1.42) is 3 times higher than the pristine CuO NW sensor when detecting 50 ppm formaldehyde (HCHO) at 250 degrees C. The enhanced gas sensing performance could be attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunction which was revealed by specific band alignment and the heterojunction-depletion model. Besides, the well-structured p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NWs achieved excellent selectivity for HCHO from commonly occurred reducing gases. In a word, such heterostructured p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NW gas sensors demonstrate a feasible approach for enhanced sensitive and selective HCHO detection.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered potential materials in the gas sensor field because of their extremely porous, adjustable characteristics and high surface area. In this paper, based on a ZIF-8 precursor, ZnO-CuO hollow nanocage heterostructure materials were successfully fabricated by a multistep method, and the prepared ZnO-CuO sensor exhibited excellent respond to H2S. We found that when the mass ratio of CuO reaches 1 wt %, the response to 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was as high as 70, and the recovery time was 55 s at a low temperature of 115 degrees C. Such a ZnO-CuO sensor has a highly selective response to H2S gas. In addition, the lower detection limit can reach 200 ppb. Furthermore, the gas sensors also had high consistency and repeatability. Gas sensing mechanism studies have shown that the special nanocage structure with larger specific surface area helps to increase gas adsorption and diffusion on the surface of sensing materials, and the formation of p-n heterostructures by the introduction of CuO improves the sensitive and selective response to H2S. This work will improve the practical application of H2S gas sensors for their simple preparation method and research into the response mechanism.

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors have emerged as invaluable technology due to their high sensitivity and ease of fabrication. However, they have limited selectivity and require relatively high operational temperatures. Here, we present a monolithic membrane-chemoresistive sensor consisting of a hierarchical metal oxide (MO) and a metal-organic frameworks (MOF) layer. Both layers were made by sequential aerosol deposition of SnO 2 and ZnO nanoparticles, with the latter being thereafter converted to zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) by chemical vapour conversion. The SnO 2 fractal network provides high surface area for chemical sensing, while the multi-scale porous ZIF-8 membrane offers a controlled gateway for gas molecule diffusion. Notably, our hierarchical dual-layer architecture can tune the analyte sensor response time, allowing discrimination of a variety of gases, including NO 2 , ethanol, acetone, methanol, propane, and ethyl benzene. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were implemented to gain further insights into the selectivity mechanism revealing the key role of surface adsorption sites. This approach enables us to develop unique response profiles, fingerprinting the presence of specific gas molecules, with application ranging from industrial safety to environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics.

Ultrasensitive Room-Temperature Chemical Sensors By Ag-Decorated Ultraporous Zno Nanoparticle Networks

Abstract:Highly sensitive room temperature gas sensors consisting of ultraporous ZnO nanoparticle networks decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by nanoparticle aerosol self-assembly and sequential sputtering. Optimization of the AgNPs loading and the thickness of ultraporous ZnO networks lead to a sensor response, defined as the ratio of resistance change, of 1.8 and 7.4 at 0.1 and 1 ppm ethanol concentrations, respectively, at room temperature under light irradiation. This is similar to 10 times higher than that of pure ultraporous ZnO film under the same experimental conditions. Furthermore, the optimal AgNPs-decorated ultraporous ZnO films can detect as low as 5 ppb of ethanol gas at room temperature under light illumination. The high sensitivity of AgNPs-decorated ZnO film can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the ultraporous nanoparticle network morphology, AgNPs sensitization and light-assisted photo-excited gas-sensing process. These provide directions for the design of high sensitive metal-oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors capable to operate at room temperature.
