Abstract:We experimentally study a one-dimensional uncompressed granular chain composed of a finite number of identical spherical elastic beads with Hertzian interactions. The chain is harmonically excited by an amplitude- and frequency-dependent boundary drive at its left end and has a fixed boundary at its right end. Such ordered granular media represent an interesting new class of nonlinear acoustic metamaterials, since they exhibit essentially nonlinear acoustics and have been designated as “sonic vacua” due to the fact that their corresponding speed of sound (as defined in classical acoustics) is zero. This paves the way for essentially nonlinear and energy-dependent acoustics with no counterparts in linear theory. We experimentally detect time-periodic, strongly nonlinear resonances whereby the particles (beads) of the granular chain respond at integer multiples of the excitation period, and which correspond to local peaks of the maximum transmitted force at the chain’s right, fixed end. In between these resonances we detect a local minimum of the maximum transmitted forces corresponding to an anti-resonance in the stationary-state dynamics. The experimental results of this work confirm previous theoretical predictions, and verify the existence of strongly nonlinear resonance responses in a system with a complete absence of any linear spectrum; as such, the experimentally detected nonlinear resonance spectrum is passively tunable with energy and sensitive to dissipative effects such as internal structural damping in the beads, and friction or plasticity effects. We compare the experimental results with direct numerical simulations of the granular network and deduce satisfactory agreement.

Self-demodulation of elastic waves in a one-dimensional granular chain

Abstract:The self-demodulation process in a nonlinear granular chain of identical beads is studied analytically and numerically. In such a medium, in accordance with the dispersion relation, longitudinal waves that have a frequency higher than the so-called cutoff frequency of the chain are evanescent. Here, we study the influence on the self-demodulation process of the transition from the propagative to the evanescent regime in pump wave propagation that takes place when the pump frequency increases. An analytical solution in discrete coordinates is derived for the case of two primary frequencies mixing into a single difference frequency. This solution is then numerically integrated in order to analyze the demodulation of the acoustic wave packet (i.e., of the harmonic acoustic wave modulated in a pulse mode). Temporal demodulated profiles can be strongly sensitive to the regime (propagative or evanescent) of primary wave transport. This model allows us to detect the cutoff frequency of longitudinal elastic waves in the chain, without receiving the primary waves, but receiving the low frequency nonlinearly radiated signal. The roles of frequency dependent attenuation, velocity dispersion, and observation distance are analyzed.
Tolerance Analysis of the Pulse Signal of a Novel Lateral Deformable Optical NEMS Grating Transducer

Abstract:This paper discusses the pulse signal of a novel opto-mechanical zeroth-order grating transducer based on an anomalous diffraction phenomenon, Wood's type anomaly and its corresponding tolerance analysis. In this device, tiny changes in the displacement of the nanostructured grating elements lead to a dramatic increase or decrease of the optical reflection amplitude. With this special feature, this structure is ideal to measure very small displacement. Unexpectedly, the original sinusoidal signal of the device develops into a new signal form, i.e. pulse signal with the decrease of the air gap between two layers of gratings. Thus the sensitivity of the structure is improved 8 times higher, as the slope of the pulse signal, namely 2.5%/nm, i.e. 0.65dB/nm, is 8 times higher than that of the original signal form, namely 0.3%/nm, i.e. 0.03dB/nm. However, this device is very sensitive to parameters including wavelength, period, duty ratio, air gap as well as thickness of the gratings. Thus, in this paper the performance of the structures with different parameter settings is analyzed and optimized through rigorous coupled wavelength analysis (RCWA) and 3-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. All the calculated data enables us to apply the structure into fields required for different sensitivities with different values of grating parameters and thus broadens the further usage of such novel structure. In addition, a synthetic tolerance analysis of the pulse signal is conducted and indicates the possibility of achieving an actual device with the highest slope superior to 0.5%/nm is close to 85% and the possibility that the highest slope of an actual device falls in the interval ranging from 1.0%/nm to 2.0%/nm is 64%. All the simulated data enables us to get a better understanding of the tolerance of the pulse signal and a guidance of successful realization of an actual device.
Tunable magneto-granular phononic crystals

Abstract:This paper reports on the study of the dynamics of 1D magneto-granular phononic crystals composed of a chain of spherical steel beads inside a properly designed magnetic field. This field is induced by an array of permanent magnets, located in a holder at a given distance from the chain. The theoretical and experimental results of the band gap structure are displayed, including all six degrees of freedom for the beads, i.e. three translations and three rotations. Experimental evidence of transverse-rotational modes of propagation is pre- sented; moreover, by changing the strength of the magnetic field, the dynamic response of the granular chain is tuned. The combination of non-contact tunability with the potentially strong nonlinear behavior of gran- ular systems ensures the suitability of magneto-granular phononic crystals as nonlinear, tunable mechanical metamaterials for use in controlling elastic wave propagation.

Coupling of Wideband Impulses Generated by Granular Chains into Liquids

Abstract:An ultrasonic transducer technology to generate wideband impulses using a one-dimensional chain of spheres was previously presented. The Hertzian contact between the spheres causes the nonlinearity of the system to increase, which transforms high amplitude narrowband sinusoidal input into a train of wideband impulses. Generation of short duration ultrasonic pulses is desirable both in diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound. Nevertheless, the biggest challenge in terms of adaptation to biomedical ultrasound is the coupling of the ultrasonic energy into biological tissue. An analytical model was created to address the coupling issue. Effect of the matching layer was modelled as a flexible thin plate clamped from the edges. Model was verified against hydrophone measurements. Different coupling materials, such as glass, aluminium, acrylic, silicon rubber, and vitreous carbon, was analysed with this model. Results showed that soft matching layers such as acrylic and rubber inhibit the generation of higher order harmonics. Between the hard matching materials, vitreous carbon achieved the best results due to its acoustic impedance.

Abstract:Attenuation and amplification of wave amplitudes are the major concerns for the design of engineering structures subjected to dynamic/impact loadings. As a kind of special structures, flexible chains have been demonstrated to support solitary waves when they undergo impacts. Here we propose a method to harness graded flexible structures with stiffness gradient to realize the decrease and increase of the amplitude of the pulse or pulse-like signals, which contributes to the design of absorber and mechanical triode. By combining the positive gradient with the concept of amplitude gap, we find the pulse or pulse-like signals can be distorted and destructed, which paves a new way to implement impact mitigation.

Abstract:Experimental results and their interpretations are presented on the nonlinear acoustic effects of multiple scattered elastic waves in unconsolidated granular media. Short wave packets with a central frequency higher than the so-called cut-off frequency of the medium are emitted at one side of the statically stressed slab of glass beads and received at the other side after multiple scattering and nonlinear interactions. Typical signals are strongly distorted compared to their initially radiated shape both due to nonlinearity and scattering. It is shown that acoustic waves with a deformation amplitude much lower than the mean static deformation of the contacts in the medium can modify the elastic properties of the medium, especially for the weak contact skeleton part. This addresses the problem of reproducibility of granular structures during and after acoustic excitation, which is necessary to understand in the non destructive testing of the elastic properties of granular media by acoustic methods. Coda signal analysis is shown to be a powerful time-resolved tool to monitor slight modifications in the elastic response of an unconsolidated granular structure.

Abstract:We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of parametric amplification of acoustically excited vibrations in micromachined single-crystal silicon cantilevers electrostatically actuated by fringing fields. The device dynamics are analyzed using the Mathieu–Duffing equation, obtained using the Galerkin order reduction technique. Our experimental results show that omnidirectional acoustic pressure used as a noncontact source for linear harmonic driving is a convenient and versatile tool for the mechanical dynamic characterization of unpackaged, nonintegrated microstructures. The fringing field's electrostatic actuation allows for efficient parametric amplification of an acoustic signal. The suggested amplification approach may have applications in a wide variety of micromechanical devices, including resonant sensors, microphones and microphone arrays, and hearing aids. It can be used also for upward frequency tuning.

Abstract:Recent <i>in vivo</i> recordings from the mammalian cochlea indicate that although the motion of the basilar membrane appears actively amplified and nonlinear only at frequencies relatively close to the peak of the response, the internal motions of the organ of Corti display these same features over a much wider range of frequencies. These experimental findings are not easily explained by the textbook view of cochlear mechanics, in which cochlear amplification is controlled by the motion of the basilar membrane (BM) in a tight, closed-loop feedback configuration. This study shows that a simple phenomenological model of the cochlea inspired by the work of Zweig [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. <b>138</b>, 1102 (2015)] can account for recent data in mouse and gerbil. In this model, the active forces are regulated indirectly, through the effect of BM motion on the pressure field across the cochlear partition, rather than via direct coupling between active-force generation and BM vibration. The absence of strong vibration-amplification feedback in the cochlea also provides a compelling explanation for the observed intensity invariance of fine time structure in the BM response to acoustic clicks.

Abstract:Granular materials are inherently heterogeneous, leading to challenges in formulating accurate models of sound propagation. In order to quantify acoustic responses in space and time, we perform experiments in a photoelastic granular material in which the internal stress pattern (in the form of force chains) is visible. We utilize two complementary methods, high-speed imaging and piezoelectric transduction, to provide particle-scale measurements of both the amplitude and speed of an acoustic wave in the near-field regime. We observe that the wave amplitude is on average largest within particles experiencing the largest forces, particularly in those chains radiating away from the source, with the force-dependence of this amplitude in qualitative agreement with a simple Hertzian-like model of particle contact area. In addition, we are able to directly observe rare transiently strong force chains formed by the opening and closing of contacts during propagation. The speed of the leading edge of the pulse is in agreement with the speed of a one-dimensional chain, while the slower speed of the peak response suggests that it contains waves which have travelled over multiple paths even within just this near-field region. These effects highlight the importance of particle-scale behaviors in determining the acoustical properties of granular materials.

Abstract:Dynamic fluidization behavior has been generally identified as a result of irreversible grain sliding and dominates the strain time evolution in granular materials in presence of vibrations. From vibration-induced strain evolution experiments performed in a triaxial configuration, we provide direct evidences that fluidity of granular packing is enhanced with vibration amplitude and frequency within low frequency dynamics. It is verified that a simple fluidity model based on standard Maxwell viscoelastic rheology can be used to account for the strain time evolution in presence of low frequency vibrations. The proposed configuration reveals that the frequency has a completely contrary effect on aging and rejuvenation of the granular system comparing with vibration amplitude. Weakening of effective viscosity induced by increasing vibration amplitude and frequency is well elucidated by a statistical model, in which both parameters considering potential energy stored in the system and distribution of grain-contact orientations are introduced.

Abstract:We study the highly complex wave transmission at the interface between a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonally structured granular medium and a linearly elastic thin plate; we refer to this system as the "granular-solid interface". By applying an impulsive excitation at the free end of the granular medium we study the nonlinear acoustics at the interface. A computational model is developed, where the thin plate under the plane-stress assumption is discretized by finite-elements (FEs), whereas the granular medium by discrete-elements (DEs). Apart from the highly discontinuous Hertzian granule-to-granule and granule-to-plate interactions, we also take into account rotational and frictional effects in the granules; these effects render the acoustics of the granular-solid interface strongly nonlinear and highly discontinuous. The interaction forces coupling the granular medium to the plate are computed by means of an algorithm of interrelated iterations and interpolations at successive time steps. Since frictional effects may yield numerical instabilities, our approach incorporates the continuous "Coulomb–tanh" friction model, whose efficacy is verified through convergence studies. By formulating appropriate theoretically predicted convergence criteria, we show that the stability of the algorithm depends on the time step, the mesh size of the FE model, and the frictional model parameters. Accordingly, convergence is ensured by introducing a self-adaptive time step scheme, which is informed by theoretical convergence criteria. An application of the algorithm for a specific granular-solid interface demonstrates its validity, accuracy and robustness. Wave transmission through the discrete–continuum interface is drastically delayed by the granular medium, which, inflicts significant "softening" to the nonlinear acoustics. Moreover, there is strong nonlinear wave dispersion and energy localization in the granular medium, resulting in highly reduced wave transmission to the plate. Moreover, these nonlinear acoustical features are tunable with the applied shock (or input energy). The model and results presented in this work apply to a broad class of nonlinear discrete–continuum interfaces, with broad applications, e.g., shock/blast mitigation, granular containers with flexible boundaries and acoustic non-reciprocity.

Abstract:The sensitivity and frequency selectivity of hearing result from tuned amplification by an active process in the mechanoreceptive hair cells. In most vertebrates, the active process stems from the active motility of hair bundles. The mammalian cochlea exhibits an additional form of mechanical activity termed electromotility: its outer hair cells (OHCs) change length upon electrical stimulation. The relative contributions of these two mechanisms to the active process in the mammalian inner ear is the subject of intense current debate. Here, we show that active hair-bundle motility and electromotility can together implement an efficient mechanism for amplification that functions like a ratchet: Sound-evoked forces, acting on the basilar membrane, are transmitted to the hair bundles, whereas electromotility decouples active hair-bundle forces from the basilar membrane. This unidirectional coupling can extend the hearing range well below the resonant frequency of the basilar membrane. It thereby provides a concept for low-frequency hearing that accounts for a variety of unexplained experimental observations from the cochlear apex, including the shape and phase behavior of apical tuning curves, their lack of significant nonlinearities, and the shape changes of threshold tuning curves of auditory-nerve fibers along the cochlea. The ratchet mechanism constitutes a general design principle for implementing mechanical amplification in engineering applications.
Metamaterials made of granular chains for nondestructive evaluation applications

Abstract:In the last two decades it has been demonstrated that highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) propagating in metamaterials made of chains of granular particles can be used in many physics and engineering applications, including acoustic lenses, impurity detectors, and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). HNSWs are compact nondispersive waves, and in this paper, we demonstrate their application for the nondestructive evaluation of civil, mechanical, and aerospace structures. In particular, this presentation delves with the non-invasive assessment of concrete strength and the evaluation of thermal stress in slender beams. For the concrete application, the NDE method exploits the dynamic interaction between the metamaterial and the concrete, and the hypothesis is that this interaction depends on the stiffness of the specimen being inspected. The results show that the time of flight of the HNSWs is inversely proportional to the modulus of elasticity of the concrete. For the buckling application, we present the coupling mechanism between a beam and the HNSWs propagating along a straight granular chain in contact with the beam. We show that the waves can be used to measure the stress of thermally loaded structures or to infer the neutral temperature, i.e., the temperature at which this stress is null.
Dual contribution to amplification in the mammalian inner ear

Abstract:The inner ear achieves a wide dynamic range of responsiveness by mechanically amplifying weak sounds. The enormous mechanical gain reported for the mammalian cochlea, which exceeds a factor of 4,000, poses a challenge for theory. Here we show how such a large gain can result from an interaction between amplification by low-gain hair bundles and a pressure wave: hair bundles can amplify both their displacement per locally applied pressure and the pressure wave itself. A recently proposed ratchet mechanism, in which hair-bundle forces do not feed back on the pressure wave, delineates the two effects. Our analytical calculations with a WKB approximation agree with numerical solutions.

Abstract:Although granular materials are the second most processed in industry after water, the theoretical study of granules-structure interactions is not as advanced as that of fluid-structure interactions due to the lack of a unified view of the constitutive relation of granular materials. In the previous work, the theoretical model of granules-beam coupled vibration was developed and verified by experiments. However, it was also found that the system exhibits significant stiffness-softening Duffing characteristics even under micro-vibration, which implies that chaotic responses may be reached under certain conditions. To reveal the route and critical conditions for the system to enter chaos, in the present work, the chaotic dynamics of the system are studied. In qualitative analysis, Melnikov method is applied to analyze the instability behavior of the perturbed heteroclinic orbit of the system, thus the critical condition for the system to enter Smale horseshoe chaos, i.e., the Melnikov criterion, is obtained. The validity of the criterion is verified numerically. In experimental studies, the existence of chaotic responses and the route to chaos for granules-beam coupled vibrations is revealed. The experimental results suggest that the system response first experiences symmetry-breaking then undergoes a complete period-doubling cascade, and finally enters single-scroll chaos. In addition, although the Additional Dynamic Load (ADL) generated by granular media is highly complicated, a general and simple evolution pattern of the chaos threshold is found by parametric experiments, which is also supported by the Melnikov criterion. In short, the chaotic dynamics of granules-beam coupled vibration is revealed, which is a contribution to the engineering vibration aspect. Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves in Heterogeneous Periodic Granular Media

Abstract:We use experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis to investigate the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves in periodic arrangements of dimer (two-mass) and trimer (three-mass) cell structures in one-dimensional granular lattices. To vary the composition of the fundamental periodic units in the granular chains, we utilize beads of different materials (stainless steel, bronze, glass, nylon, polytetrafluoroethylene, and rubber). This selection allows us to tailor the response of the system based on the masses, Poisson ratios, and elastic moduli of the components. For example, we examine dimer configurations with two types of heavy particles, two types of light particles, and alternating light and heavy particles. Employing a model with Hertzian interactions between adjacent beads, we find very good agreement between experiments and numerical simulations. We find equally good agreement between these results and a theoretical analysis of the model in the long-wavelength regime that we derive for heterogeneous environments (dimer chains) and general bead interactions. Our analysis encompasses previously-studied examples as special cases and also provides key insights on the influence of heterogeneous lattices on the properties (width and propagation speed) of the nonlinear wave solutions of this system.

Abstract:Abstract The mechanical and electrical responses of the mammalian cochlea to acoustic stimuli are nonlinear and highly tuned in frequency. This is due to the electromechanical properties of cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs). At each location along the cochlear spiral, the OHCs mediate an active process in which the sensory tissue motion is enhanced at frequencies close to the most sensitive frequency (called the characteristic frequency, CF). Previous experimental results showed an approximate 0.3 cycle phase shift in the OHC-generated extracellular voltage relative the basilar membrane displacement, which was initiated at a frequency approximately one-half octave lower than the CF. Findings in the present paper reinforce that result. This shift is significant because it brings the phase of the OHC-derived electromotile force near to that of the basilar membrane velocity at frequencies above the shift, thereby enabling the transfer of electrical to mechanical power at the basilar membrane. In order to seek a candidate physical mechanism for this phenomenon, we used a comprehensive electromechanical mathematical model of the cochlear response to sound. The model predicts the phase shift in the extracellular voltage referenced to the basilar membrane at a frequency approximately one-half octave below CF, in accordance with the experimental data. In the model, this feature arises from a minimum in the radial impedance of the tectorial membrane and its limbal attachment. These experimental and theoretical results are consistent with the hypothesis that a tectorial membrane resonance introduces the correct phasing between mechanical and electrical responses for power generation, effectively turning on the cochlear amplifier.
