Abstract:Theoretical study on the binding affinities of dehydrotetrapyrido[20] annulene to the alkene and aromatic molecules was performed using the AM1 and DFT methods. It indicated that the host possesses the ability to bind the above molecules since the binding energies of the complexes were negative. The complexes were stabilized via the hydrogen bonding, static effect, and π — π stacking interaction between the host and guest molecules. Based on the B3LYP/3-21G optimized geometries, the electronic, IR, and NMR spectra were calculated using the INDO/CIS, AM1, and B3LYP/3-21G methods, respectively. Due to the hydrogen bonding, the first absorption maxima in the electronic spectra of studied complexes were blue-shifted, whereas the main IR frequencies for some of the complexes were red-shifted. At the same time, the chemical shifts of carbon atoms forming the bonds in the complexes were lower, compared to those of the host.
The Aromatic Dianion Metalloles

Abstract:Metalloaromatic species are unique and important both experimentally and theoretically. Significant progress has been made during the past few decades. New aromatic systems have challenged and extended the concept of aromaticity remarkably. In this perspective, recent results on the study of the dianion aromatic metalloles and their corresponding analogues are reviewed. These include the dilithio group 14 metalloles, group 13 metalloles and transition metal metalloles. X-ray crystallography has made a key contribution to the understanding of the structures. Various theoretical tools, such as NICS and AdNDP, make it possible to measure the aromaticity beyond Hückel's rule. The dianion butadiene skeletons play a key role in these metalloles and can be regarded as non-innocent ligands, which accept the electrons from the metal center and thus form the aromatic rings. By simply changing the central metals to different metals, the metallole analogues such as dicupra[10]annulenes and spiroaromatic palladoles can also be generated, which opens a door to synthesize other metalla-macrocyclic aromatics. Key challenges and envisioned opportunities for the future, such as applying these dianion metalloles as novel ligands of transition metals and generating new types of organometallic aromatic system, are also discussed.
Theoretical studies on stabilities and spectroscopy of C84O

Abstract:The equilibrium geometries and relative stabilities of the 32 possible isomers of C84O have been studied using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G level. At the ground state, the most stable geometry of C84O has been found to be 12,13-C84O. In 12,13-C84O, the oxygen atom is added to the 6/6 bond, and an annulene-like structure is formed. Based on the optimized geometries at the B3LYP/6-31G level, the electronic absorption spectra and 13C NMR spectra of the stable isomers of C84O have been calculated with the INDO/CIS and B3LYP/6-31G methods, respectively. Compared with those of C84(D2), the main absorptions in the electronic spectrum of 12,13-C84O are red-shifted, and the chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms are changed upfield. The aromaticities of the 32 isomers of C84O characterized by the nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) have been investigated at the B3LYP/3-21G level. The aromaticities of the isomers with the annulene-like structures of C84O are better than those of the isomers with the epoxy structures. The dependence of the NICS values in 12,13-C84O on the distance of the helium atom from the cage center has also been explored.
How Solvents Control the Stereospecificity of Ni-Catalyzed Miyaura Borylation of Allylic Pivalates

Abstract:Solvents act as a powerful control of stereospecificity in Ni-catalyzed Miyaura borylation of allylic pivalates. Low polar solvents lead to stereoretentive borylation, whereas highly polar solvents deliver low stereoselectivity for retention and acetonitrile produces stereoinversion products. We explored the reaction mechanism and origins of stereospecificity with density functional theory calculations. The Ni-catalyzed allylic C-O bond activation determines the stereospecificity of borylation. A zwitterionic S(N)2-type transition state inverts the allylic stereogenic center, whereas a neutral cyclic transition state cleaves the C-O bond with stereoretention. This difference in charge separation results in the control of stereospecificity by solvent polarity. Low polar solvents demonstrate the intrinsic selectivity for retention, whereas highly polar solvents lower such selectivity by stabilizing the zwitterionic stereoinvertive transition state. Distinctive from other solvents, acetonitrile further promotes stereoinversion by replacing the coordination of the phosphine ligand and reverses the intrinsic stereoselectivity. We proved this solvent-promoted Ni-catalyzed C-O bond activation with a designed experimental verification of ligandless Ni-catalyzed borylation of allylic pivalates in acetonitrile.

Abstract:We have developed photoboosted stannylation reactions of terminal alkynes (linear-selective hydrostannylation) and fluoroarenes (defluorostannylation), in which the stannyl anion is photoexcited to an excited triplet (T<sub>1</sub>) stannyl diradical species. This unprecedented T<sub>1</sub>-stannyl diradical species shows completely different reactivity and selectivity from those of stannyl anions and stannyl radicals. Acidic Stabilization of the Dual-Aromatic Heterocyclic Anions

Abstract:Recently, we discovered that the delocalization of nitrogen lone-pair electrons (NLPEs) in five-membered nitrogen heterocycles created a second σ-aromaticity in addition to the prototypical π-aromaticity. Such dual-aromatic compounds, such as the pentazole anion, were proved to have distinct chemistry in comparison to traditional π-aromatics, such as benzene, and were surprisingly unstable, susceptible to electrophilic attack, and relatively difficult to obtain. The dual-aromatics are basic in nature, but prefer not to be protonated when confronting more than three hydronium/ammonium ions, which violates common sense understanding of acid−base neutralization for a reason that is unclear. Here, we carried out 63 test simulations to explore the stability and reactivity of three basic heterocycle anions (pentazole anion N5 ̄, tetrazole anion N4C1H1 ̄, and 1,2,4-triazole anion N3C2H2 ̄) in four types of solvents (acidic ions, H3O+ and NH4+, polar organics, THF, and neutral organics, benzene) with different acidities and concentrations. By quantum mechanical calculations of the electron density, atomistic structure, interatomic interactions, molecular orbital, magnetic shielding, and energetics, we confirmed the presence of dual aromaticity in the heterocyclic anions, and discovered their reactivity to be a competition between their basicity and dual aromaticity. Interestingly, when the acidic ions H3O+/NH4+ are three times more in number than the basic heterocyclic anions, the anions turn to violate acid−base neutralization and remain unprotonated, and the surrounding acidic ions start to show a significant stabilization effect on the studied heterocyclic anions. This work brings new knowledge to nitrogen aromatics and the finding is expected to be adaptable for other pnictogen five-membered ring systems.

Adaptive σ Aromaticity and Triplet Ground State in Tetraatomic Boron Species

Abstract:In comparison with the widely recognized π aromaticity, σ aromaticity is a less developed concept in chemistry, especially for unsaturated systems. Moreover, most studies on σ aromaticity have been mainly limited to the ground state of saturated systems; unsaturated species with σ aromaticity in the excited state have never been reported. Here we demonstrate that a recently synthesized tetraatomic boron species is σ aromatic not only in the lowest singlet state but also in the lowest triplet state according to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported by numerous aromaticity indices, such as nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID), and electron density of delocalized bonds (EDDB). In addition, several isomers are predicted to possess a triplet ground-state character. Abstract:Investigations of the nature and degree of antiaromaticity of cycloheptatrienyl anion derivatives using both experimental and computational tools are presented. The ground state of cycloheptatrienyl anion in the gas phase is triplet, planar and Baird‐aromatic. In DMSO, it assumes a singlet distorted allylic form with a paratropic ring current. The other derivatives in both phases assume either allylic or diallylic conformations depending on the substituent pattern. A combination of experimental and computational methods was used to determine the pKa values of 16 derivatives in DMSO, which ranged from 36 to –10.7. We revealed that the stronger stabilization of the anionic system, which correlates with acidity, does not necessarily imply a lower degree of anti‐aromaticity in terms of magnetic properties. Conversely, the substitution pattern first affects the geometry of the ring through the bulkiness of the substituents and their better conjugation with a more distorted system. Consequently, the distortion reduces the cyclic conjugation in the π‐system and thereby decreases the paratropic current in a magnetic field, which manifests itself as a decrease in the NICS. The triplet‐state geometries and magnetic properties are nearly independent on the substitution pattern, which is typical for simple aromatic systems.

Abstract:In general, aromaticity can be clarified as π- and σ-aromaticity according to the type of electrons with major contributions. The traditional π-aromaticity generally describes the π-conjugation in fully unsaturated rings whereas σ-aromaticity may stabilize fully saturated rings with delocalization caused by σ-electron conjugation. Reported herein is an example of σ-aromaticity in an unsaturated three-membered ring (3 MR), which is supported by experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Specifically, when the 3 MR in cyclopropaosmapentalene is cleaved by ethane through two isodesmic reactions, both of them are highly endothermic (+29.7 and +35.0 kcal mol(-1)). These positive values are in sharp contrast to the expected exothermicity, thus indicating aromaticity in the 3 MR. Further nucleus-independent chemical shift and anisotropy of the current-induced density calculations reveal the nature of σ-aromaticity in the unsaturated 3 MR.
Aroma profile of star anise and the structure-odor relationship of anethole

Abstract:Star anise is an important fragrance material that has a characteristic anise-like odor. Although the main component of star anise is (E)-anethole, which accounts for over 90% of the constituents, the odor of (E)-anethole is different from that of the material itself. Here, we examined the aroma profile of star anise. GC-MS analysis of star anise extracts showed that it contains many compounds with structures similar to (E)-anethole. Our results indicate that (E)-anethole is the key compound in the odor of star anise, but structurally similar compounds play an important role in creating its odor. We examined the structure-odor relationship of (E)-anethole, focusing on the methoxy and 1-propenyl substituents. Altering the 1-propenyl group changed the odors of all the anethole derivatives. Replacing the methoxy group with a hydrogen atom created compounds with similar fatty odors. This shows that the methoxy group is important for the characteristic odor of anethole. We synthesized anethole derivatives where the methoxy group was replaced with a methyl group. In both methoxy- and methyl-substituted anethole derivatives, altering the 1-propenyl group changed the odors of the derivatives. Therefore, the methoxy and methyl benzene moieties are important structural features for the odor of star anise. The structural characteristics of anethole are closely related to its odor expression.

Abstract:Aromaticity is a vital concept that governs the electronic properties of π-conjugated organic molecules and has long been restricted to 2D systems. The aromaticity in 3D π-conjugated molecules has been rarely studied. Here we report a fully conjugated diradicaloid molecular cage and its global aromaticity at different oxidation states. The neutral compound has an open-shell singlet ground state with a dominant 38π monocyclic conjugation pathway and follows the [4n + 2] Hückel aromaticity rule; the dication has a triplet ground state with a dominant 36π monocyclic conjugation pathway and satisfies [4n] Baird aromaticity; the tetracation is an open-shell singlet with 52 π-electrons that are delocalized along the 3D rigid framework, showing 3D global antiaromaticity; and the hexacation possesses D3 symmetry with 50 globally delocalized π-electrons, showing [6n + 2] 3D global aromaticity. Different types of aromaticity were therefore accessed in one molecular cage platform, depending on the symmetry, number of π-electrons and spin state.

Abstract:A visible light‐mediated strategy for the preparation of aromatic stannanes from aryl halides (mostly aryl bromides) is presented herein. The reaction proceeds under metal‐ and additive‐free conditions and exhibits a broad substrate scope. The products obtained have been employed in the C‐C bond formation via Stille cross‐coupling reactions. Mechanistic investigation evidenced the key role of both aryl radical and trimethylstannyl radical in Ar‐Sn bond formation.

Aromatic stabilization of functionalized corannulene cations

Abstract:The first comprehensive theoretical investigation of aromaticity in functionalized corannulene cations of general formula [CH3-C20H10](+) was accomplished. The experimentally known system [CH3-hub-C20H10](+) was augmented by two other possible isomers, namely, rim- and spoke-ones. Changes in aromaticity, when going from neutral corannulene to its functionalized cations, were monitored with the help of descriptors of different nature such as structure-based HOMA, topological PDI and FLU, and magnetic NICS. A highly efficient tool for analysis and visualization of delocalization and conjugation named ACID was also utilized. In the final step, a complete set of (1)H and (13)C chemical shifts was calculated and compared with the available experimental data. Conservation of aromaticity of 6-membered rings along with vanishing anti-aromatic character of central 5-membered rings was found to be the main reason for the exceptional stability of the hub-isomer. At the same time, functionalization of the corannulene moiety at the rim- or spoke-site resulted in dramatic elimination of aromaticity of 6-membered rings, whereas anti-aromatic character of the central ring remained. Altogether, it led to much lower stability of these isomers in comparison with that of the hub-one.
Butadienyl Diiron Complexes: Nonplanar Metalla‐Aromatics Involving Σ‐type Orbital Overlap

Abstract:AbstractA new class of nonplanar metalla‐aromatics, diiron complexes bridged by a 1,3‐butadienyl dianionic ligand, were synthesized in high yields from dilithio reagents and two equivalents of FeBr2. The complexes consist of two antiferromagnetically coupled high‐spin FeII centers, as revealed by magnetometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Furthermore, experimental (X‐ray structural analysis) and theoretical analyses (NICS, ICSS, AICD, MOs) suggest that the complexes are aromatic. Remarkably, this nonplanar metalla‐aromaticity is achieved by an uncommon σ‐type overlap between the ligand p and metal d orbitals, in sharp contrast to the intensively studied planar aromatic systems featuring delocalized π‐type bonding. Specifically, the σ‐type interaction between the two Fe 3dxz orbitals and the butadienyl π orbital results in the formation of a six‐electron conjugated system and hence enables the aromatic character.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization by means. of elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectra of 3-trichlorostannylpropionates, Cl3SnCH2CH2COOR (R = cyclopentyl, 1; cyclohexyl, 2; cyclopentylmethyl, 3; cyclohexylmethyl, 4), are described together with their complexes with dibutylsulfoxide (L-1), 2,2'-bipyridyl (L-2) and 1,10-phenanthroline (L-3), Cl3SnCH2CH2COOR . The crystal structures of 1 and 2 show that the tin atom adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramid geometry via intramolecular carbonyl oxygen to tin coordination [the distances of Sn-O bond are 0.2351 (6) run for 1 and 0.2362(3) rum for 2)]. On the relations between aromaticity and substituent effect

Abstract:Aromaticity/aromatic and substituent/substituent effects belong to the most commonly used terms in organic chemistry and related fields. The quantitative description of aromaticity is based on energetic, geometric (e.g., HOMA), magnetic (e.g., NICS) and reactivity criteria, as well as the properties of the electronic structure (e.g., FLU). The substituent effect can be described using either traditional Hammett-type substituent constants or characteristics based on quantum-chemistry. For this purpose, the energies of properly designed homodesmotic reactions and electron density distribution are used. In the first case, a descriptor named SESE (energy stabilizing the substituent effect) is obtained, while in the second case cSAR (charge of the substituent active region), which is the sum of the charge of the ipso carbon atom and the charge of the substituent. The use of the above-mentioned characteristics of aromaticity and the substituent effect allows revealing the relationship between them for mono-, di-, and polysubstituted π-electron systems, including substituted heterocyclic rings as well as quasi-aromatic ones. It has been shown that the less aromatic the system, the stronger the substituent influence on its π-electron structure. In all cases, when the substituent changes number of π-electrons in the ring in the direction of 4N+2, its aromaticity increases. Intramolecular charge transfer (a resonance effect) is privileged in cases where the number of bonds between the electron-attracting and electron-donating atoms is even. Quasi-aromatic rings, when attached to a truly aromatic hydrocarbon, simulate well the “original” aromatic rings, alike the benzene. For larger systems, a long-distance substituent effect has been found.

Abstract:(Z)-1-(tri-o-tolylstannyl)-3-phenyl-1-buten-3-ol (1) and (Z)-1-(tri-p-tolylstannyl)-3-phenyl-1-buten-3-ol (2) were synthesized by the additive reaction of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol with tri-o-tolyltin and tri-p-tolyltin hydrides. One of the aryl groups in compounds I and 2 was substituted by Cl, Br, I to yield derivatives of the type PhC(CH3)(OH)CH=CHSn(aryl)(2)X [aryl=o-tolyl, X=Cl (3); aryl=p-tolyl, X=Cl (4); aryl=o-tolyl, X=Br (5); aryl=p-tolyl, X=Br (6); aryl=o-tolyl, X=I (7); aryl=p-tolyl, X=I (8)]. Compounds 1-8 were characterized by elemental analysis; H-1 NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The crystal structures of 1, 2 and 5 have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Sn atom in 1 and 2 exhibits tetrahedral geometry distorted towards trigonal bipyramidal due to a weak intramolecular interaction between Sn and the hydroxyl 0 atoms [2.879(5) and 2.859(4) Angstrom], while the Sn atom in 5 adopts a trigonal bipyramidal geometry with a significant Sn(1) <-- O interaction [2.483(4) Angstrom]. Abstract:Since the concept of aromaticity represents one of the most fundamental principles in chemistry, the search for unprecedented and exciting aromatic systems, therefore, continues to drive research in this area. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of spiro metalla-aromatics, in which the transition metal (Pd, Pt, or Rh) is the spiro atom, that cross-conjugates two aromatic five-membered metallacycles. These spiro metalla-aromatics tend to take square planar geometries, with the dihedral angle being influenced by the steric repulsion between the α-positioned substituents. Rationalized and classified via both experimental measurements (X-ray structural analysis, NMR spectroscopy, XPS, etc.) and theoretical analysis (DFT calculation, ISE, AICD, NICS, and CMOs), all these fundamental observations extend the concept of aromaticity and organometallic chemistry.
