Abstract:With the rapid industrialization and urbanization of coastal areas, marine pollution (such as heavy metals) is increasingly contaminating the environment, posing significant public health risks. Eastern Guangdong, a key aquaculture and fisheries hub in China, has a growing market for aquatic products. Heavy metals persist in the environment and are difficult to degrade and bioaccumulate in marine organisms through the food web, presenting carcinogenic and mutagenic risks to humans, as top predators. This study analyzed 10 key species commonly consumed by residents of eastern Guangdong (bivalves, crustaceans, and fish), measuring the concentrations of six heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Pollution levels were assessed using the pollution index (Pi), and dietary exposure risks were evaluated via the target hazard quotient (THQ) for different age groups. Results showed that Pi values for all metals were within normal background levels, but bivalves had a high capacity for Cd accumulation, with pollution severity ranking as bivalves > crustaceans > fish. The THQ values for both adults and teenagers were <1 across all samples, indicating no risk to the health of residents. However, the TTHQ for Sanguinolaria sp. exceeded 1, indicating potential health risks. This study highlights the health risks of consuming heavy metal-contaminated aquatic products, particularly bivalves. Reducing the consumption of these high-metal species could help lower dietary exposure and associated risks. Our findings provide essential data for the quality assessment of aquatic products and offer dietary recommendations for residents in eastern Guangdong.

Abstract:mu Aquaculture industries supply half of the global production, leading to an increasing concern about health risk of the aquaculture products because of widespread distribution of heavy metals in the environment. Considering high dependence of toxicity and bioaccumulation of one metal not merely upon total content but mainly upon its chemical forms, recent investigations into risk assessment of aquaculture products based on total contents of heavy metals may be unreasonable and unfair. In this study, we conducted reasonable assessment to bioaccumulation and health risk of aquaculture fish and crustacean collected from eight aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province of East China in terms of chemical forms of two model heavy metals (Sn(II), Pb(II), four organotin compounds, trimethyl lead -TML and triethyl lead -TEL). Although all metal compounds were presented below 0.2-4.1 mu g kg(-1) in aquatic food, they were at moderate contents in environmental matrices following an order of sediment > feedstuff > aquatic food > water for most of the target compounds (i.e. 54-376 mu g kg(-1) Pb(II) in sediment, 14-94 mu g kg(-1) Pb(II) in feedstuff and organotin compounds at pg L-1 levels in water), indicating feedstuff as an important exposure source apart from water adsorption. Bioaccumulation factors, biota-sediment accumulation factors and biomagnification factors demonstrated low bioaccumulation probability although the bioaccumulation level followed an order of organotin and organolead > inorganic forms > total metal. In addition, estimated daily intakes, target hazard quotients and cancer risk demonstrated no health risk for all tin compounds and no carcinogenic risks for all lead compounds but moderate non-carcinogenic risks for TML and TEL. Overall, the accumulation level and health risk were in a closer relationship with the chemical forms of Sn and Pb than their total contents, demonstrating a high necessity to risk assessment in terms of chemical forms.

Abstract:Aquatic products decrease environmental burdens and improve human health by supplying various essential nutrients, while their contamination with metal(loid)s could pose health risks to humans through food chain. In this study, the concentrations, trophic magnification and health risks of multiple metal(loid)s in various aquatic products were analyzed, including arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, cobalt, manganese, iron, copper, nickel and zinc. The results showed that the total concentrations of the metal(loid)s in marine foods from the same sea area were in the following order: seaweeds > shellfish > cephalopods > crustaceans > saltwater fish > freshwater fish. Arsenic speciation analysis indicated that high concentrations of arsenolipids were detected in lower trophic organisms. The maximum level of organoarsenic in seafood should be evaluated because of the potential toxicity of arsenolipids and arsenosugar metabolites. Weekly intake of metal(loid)s was far below the recommended provisional tolerable weekly intake even with excessive consumption of aquatic products. The hazard index was above 1 for excessive consumers, while our results also indicated that the health risks from aquatic products could be sharply decreased by reducing the ingestion of seaweeds and cephalopods. The study provided valuable guidance on the consumption of aquatic products by the general public.

Abstract:Wild fish caught by anglers (WFAs) were confirmed to be usually contaminated with metals, and the contamination status is radically affected by the growth and length of the fish. To determine the contamination levels of metals and health risks in WFAs with different length ranges of fish, this study ascertained the concentration of eight metals, including Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg and Se, in 171 wild fishes collected from the watershed of Liujiang River. The assessment of metal pollution and health risks from the consumption of these fishes with seven length ranges were accomplished. The obtained results implied a relatively high concentration of Zn, Cr, and Cd up to 109.294 mg/kg, 4.226 mg/kg, and 0.196 mg/kg (wet weight), respectively, which exceed the corresponding Maximum Residue Limit (MRL). The negative correlation between Cu, Zn, Cr, and Cd was observed to be significant with fish length, signifying a possible occurrence of biological dilution on these metals. The WFAs were mostly contaminated with Cr and Cd irrespective of the length ranges of fish, which were denoted by the average pollution index (Pi) of Cr and Cd and were commonly found to be beyond 0.2. Based on the results of health risk assessment analysis, most of the target hazard quotient (THQ) values of Cr were below 1, implying that the consumption of wild fish for adults has insignificant health risk. For children, the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values of beyond 1 were found in fishes with the length range of <25 cm, particularly a TTHQ value 1.627 in the range of 10-15 cm, indicating that children are being prone to serious health risks owing to the consumption of WFAs. The weekly recommended consumption of WFAs with the length range of 10-15 cm for adults and children was 0.298 kg/week and 0.149 kg/week, respectively. These are substantially lower than the current rate of fish consumption (0.42 kg/week), and therefore, the wild fish with the length range of 10-15 cm should be avoided for consumption.

Abstract:Aquatic products are an important source of environmental pollutants to humans. This study was conducted to assess the bioaccessibility of selected brominated flame retardants and heavy metals in common aquatic products from the Pearl River Delta, South China, as well as associated human health risks. Based on a questionnaire survey, ten of the most consumed aquatic products were collected from local markets. The bioaccessibility of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDDs), and heavy metals was assessed using an in vitro gastrointestinal model. Bioaccessibility of heavy metals (33.0–84.0%) and HBCDDs (38.5–68.4%) was significantly higher than that of PBDEs (13.4–65.4%). Total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from heavy metal consumption were much higher than the threshold values due to excessive abundances of arsenic in shellfish (HQ = 2.45, CR = 1.1 ×10-3). Furthermore, middle-aged populations and females were subjected to greater health risks due to different intakes of aquatic products among age and gender groups. Significant difference in bioaccessibility among analytes indicated that bioaccessibility of pollutants is non-negligible in health risk assessment. This is the first study systematically investigating health risks of aquatic products consumption and concludes that shellfish is a great cause for concern for the PRD residents.

Abstract:In recent years,there has been a steady increase in the demand of aquatic products and more attention has been given to the safety of the water environment.Heavy metal pollution may pose risk to human because of the toxicity and persistence of metals.In order to evaluate the ecological risk of heavy metals in the shrimp ponds,we measured the contents of Cr,Cu,As,Cd,and Pb in water,aquatic plants,shrimps,and sediments.The potential ecological risk of heavy metals in the shrimp ponds was assessed using potential ecological risk factors.And then,we studied the chemical speciation of five metals in sediments using sequential extraction.Our study showed that Cu had the highest ecological risk in water and Cd had the highest ecological risk in sediments while the potential ecological risk of the other heavy metals was low.The level of As in shrimps was higher,while other metals were lower than safety limits.The concentrations of Cr,As,Cd,Pb in different parts of the shrimp decreased following the order of exoskeleton>muscle>head,while Cu were concentrated in shrimp heads.In the sediments,Cr,Cu,Cd,and Pb mainly existed in the form of complexes phase and residuals phase,its bioavailability was low.About 30% of As existed in exchangeable phase and the bioavailability was high.

Abstract:Despite the benefits of shellfish consumption, the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in shellfish can endanger consumer’s health. The consumption of seafood in Shenzhen (a fast-developing metropolis in China) has received more and more attention. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in ten common shellfish species and associated health risks were analyzed for Shenzhen’s consumers by evaluating estimated weekly intake (EWI), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to children, adolescents, and adults. In this study, 50 shellfish samples were collected in total. The results showed that the levels of inorganic arsenic (iAs) in Babylonia areolata exceeded the maximum permissible limit set by the food safety guidelines (0.5 mg/kg), while other elements were below the limit in the present guidelines (Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China, GB 2762-2012). EWI values of children, adolescents, and adults were all lower than provisional tolerable weekly intakes (PTWIs) of all shellfish species. The analysis of total target hazard quotients (TTHQ) showed that the ingested B. areolata in children, adolescents, and adults were all at non-carcinogenic risks; the consumption of Argopecten irradians and Chlamys farreri would pose non-carcinogenic risks for children only. In all age groups, the consumption of A. irradians, B. areolata, C. farreri, and Crassostrea ariakensis would lead to lifetime cancer risk due to Cd bioaccumulation, with toxicity of Pb and iAs to be acceptable and negligible.

Abstract:Rare information on the seafood safety and the coastal water-food-energy nexus sustainability in terms of seafood safety is available. This study investigated the distribution of heavy metals in 3 kinds of seafood (bivalve molluscs, fish, and crustaceans) collected from coastal areas along the 18,000 km coastline of China. Risk assessment and source apportionment of heavy metals, and the coastal water-food-energy nexus sustainability in terms of heavy metal pollution were also performed. The results showed that total concentrations of 8 heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Hg, As, and Ni) in seafood varied with sampling sites and species by following the order of bivalve molluscs > crustaceans > fish. Estimated daily intake (EDI) analysis indicated that it was safe for humans to consume seafood in all sampling sites. Non-cancer risks posed by heavy metals were acceptable for 99.1% of adult and 97.7% of children. However, Cr and As in 72% of fish samples caused high cancer risks for children. The farmed fish posed relatively low risk in comparison with the wild fish suggested that it might be safer to consume farmed fish than wild fish. Source apportionment demonstrated that the fossil energy consumption (coal combustion and vehicle exhaust), seawater, and metallurgic dust might serve as the possible main sources of heavy metals in seafood. Based on the policy scenario analysis, the fossil-energy-controlling policy and clean coastal water action were beneficial to the seafood safety by reducing target heavy metals in seafood. These findings provided comprehensive information on seafood safety and the water-food-energy nexus sustainability in coastal regions at continental-scale in terms of heavy metal pollution.

Heavy metals in Chinese freshwater fish: Levels, regional distribution, sources and health risk assessment

Abstract:China is a major producer and consumer of freshwater fish, which can provide nutrients to the human body but is also of great concern because of the bioaccumulation and amplification of heavy metals that are directly related to human health. In this paper, we reviewed the accumulation and distribution patterns of lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) in freshwater fish from 2010 to 2020 in nine basins of China (Yangtze River, Pearl River, Yellow River, Haihe River, Huaihe River, Songhua and Liaohe River, Continental, Southeast, and Southwest basins), assessed the health risks, and compared them with those in Chinese marine fish, international freshwater fish, Chinese wild freshwater fish, and artificially cultured freshwater fish. The results showed that 1) the pollution status of the five heavy metals in freshwater fish from nine basins in China is at an intermediate level internationally; 2) the magnitude of heavy metal concentration in four types of artificially farmed freshwater fish and wild freshwater fish is ranked as follows: rice-farmed fish < cage-farmed fish < pond-farmed fish < lake-farmed fish < wild fish; 3) the noncarcinogenic risk factors for heavy metals in freshwater fish in the nine major basins in China were <1 for adults, but the noncarcinogenic risk factors for heavy metals in freshwater fish in the Yellow River, Yangtze River, Pearl River, Songhua and Liaohe River, and Huaihe River basins were all >1 for children.

Abstract:Aquatic organisms in industrially polluted areas can accumulate large quantities of heavy metals. To assess the resulting health risks, 11 trace elements in 184 aquatic products representing 14 species of fish, crustaceans, and bivalves collected from Shenzhen, China were determined. Aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), antimony (Sb), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The pollution levels of each product and the human health risk resulting from their consumption were then assessed. The concentrations of As in 57 % of samples and Cd in 11 % of samples exceeded the upper limits stipulated by the Chinese National Food Safety Standards (GB 2762-2017), which was mainly due to high concentrations of trace elements in crustaceans and bivalves. The Nemerow integrated pollution index indicated that the aquatic products accumulated high levels of As and Cd. Health risk assessments using the target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) suggested that As and Cd exposure due to consumption of aquatic products presents a potential health risk for residents of Shenzhen.

Abstract:ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the risk of cumulative exposure to Pb, Cd, Hg, and iAs through aquatic products consumed by Chinese people.MethodsHeavy metal concentration data were obtained from the national food contamination monitoring program during 2013–2017. Consumption data were derived from the China National Food Consumption Survey in 2014 and the relative potency factor (RPF) method was used to estimate cumulative exposure for neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.ResultsThe results demonstrated that the cumulative exposure based on neurotoxicity was below the lower confidence limit on benchmark doses of lead (BMDL01) for nephrotoxicity and the cumulative exposures were all lower than the provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) of Cd. However, the margin of exposure values (MOEs) of the cumulative exposures for neurotoxicity in the 2–6 year-old group was close to 1 and the cumulative exposure level for nephrotoxicity accounted for 90.21 % of the PTMI.ConclusionThe cumulative exposures of the 2–6 year-old group to the four heavy metals did not reach (but came close to) the corresponding safety threshold for both neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Given that there are still other food sources of these four heavy metals, it is necessary to more closely study their cumulative health effects.

Abstract:In order to mitigate the risk of excessive heavy metal intake, a study was conducted to assess the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) contamination in 23 edible seafood species obtained from markets in Haikou. The findings were analyzed to evaluate the potential health hazards posed to the local population through consumption. The metals were detected via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for quantification. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks in humans were assessed via target hazard quotient (THQ), combined target hazard quotient (CTHQ), and target cancer risk (TR). The results indicated that the rank order based on the median metal concentration was As > Cd > Cr > Pb. THQ and CTHQ showed that nine seafood species posed a non-carcinogenic risk regarding from As and Cd consumption separately, or the four targeted metals ingestion together. TR assessment indicated that the InAs in all the species presented a carcinogenic risk to coastal residents. The Cd content in bivalves, algae, and several crustacean (Mantis Shrimp, Orchid Crab, Red spot Swimming Crab) and fish species (Japanese Scad, Pacific Saury), and Cr levels in most bivalve species (Razor Clams, White Clams, Fan Shells, Oysters, Blood Clams) presented a carcinogenic risk. The As, Cd, Pb, and Cr levels of seafood in Haikou were assessed species presented a potential health risk. Necessitating stricter risk should be management and detection capability and monitoring will be improved.
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Heavy Metals in a Regulated E-Waste Recycling Site, Eastern China: Implications for Risk Management

Abstract:Serious pollution of multiple chemicals in irregulated e-waste recycling sites (IR-sites) were extensively investigated. However, little is known about the pollution in regulated sites. This study investigated the occurrence of 21 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and 10 metals in a regulated site, in Eastern China. The concentrations of PBDEs and Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn in soils and sediments were 1–4 and 1–3 orders of magnitude lower than those reported in the IR-sites, respectively. However, these were generally comparable to those in the urban and industrial areas. In general, a moderate pollution of PBDEs and metals was present in the vegetables in this area. A health risk assessment model was used to calculate human exposure to metals in soils. The summed non-carcinogenic risks of metals and PBDEs in the investigated soils were 1.59–3.27 and 0.25–0.51 for children and adults, respectively. Arsenic contributed to 47% of the total risks and As risks in 71.4% of the total soil samples exceeded the acceptable level. These results suggested that the pollution from e-waste recycling could be substantially decreased by the regulated activities, relative to poorly controlled operations, but arsenic pollution from the regulated cycling should be further controlled.

Abstract:A total of 45 children's toys and jewelry were tested for total and bioaccessible metal concentrations. Total As, Cd, Sb, Cr, Ni, and Pb concentrations were 0.22-19, 0.01-139, 0.1-189, 0.06-846, 0.14-2894 and 0.08-860,000 mg kg(-1). Metallic products had the highest concentrations, with 3-7 out of 13 samples exceeding the European Union safety limit for Cd, Pb, Cr, or Ni. However, assessment based on hazard index >1 and bioaccessible metal showed different trends. Under saliva mobilization or gastric ingestion, 11 out of 45 samples showed HI >1 for As, Cd, Sb, Cr, or Ni. Pb with the highest total concentration showed HI <1 for all samples while Ni showed the most hazard with HI up to 113. Our data suggest the importance of using bioaccessibility to evaluate health hazard of metals in children's toys and jewelry, and besides Pb and Cd, As, Ni, Cr, and Sb in children's products also deserve attention.
Heavy metals in aquatic products and the health risk assessment to population in China

Abstract:In this paper, a total of 62,712 aquatic product samples were collected from 32 provinces of China during 2015–2017. By analyzing the spatial distributions and non-parametric tests of five heavy metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As)) in four aquatic product (fish (n = 44,353), shrimp (n = 8453), crab (n = 5367), and shellfish (n = 4539)), it was found that the concentrations of the five heavy metals in the same aquatic product are significantly different in different regions. Furthermore, we calculated daily estimated intake (EDI) of each of the five heavy metals and assessed non-cancer risk and cancer risk using target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR), respectively. The results showed that for mean exposure levels, the THQ values in four aquatic products were all below one, meaning that there was no non-carcinogenic risk. For high exposure levels, the hazard index (HI) value exceeded one in fish in North China, which means the potential non-carcinogenic risk should not be ignored. As for cadmium, most of the TR values in crab and shellfish exceed 1 × 10−4 in North China, East China, and South China. For chromium, except for Northeast China, the TR values in fish in other regions exceed 1 × 10−4; it indicated that the cancer risk caused by cadmium or chromium should not be ignored.

Abstract:This study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals in the water sources of the upstream region of the Huangpu River, the Yangtze River Estuary, and various areas in Shanghai, as well as the heavy metal concentrations in the blood of Shanghai residents. It aimed to analyze the heavy metal elements absorbed by the human body and the resulting pathological effects. The results revealed that surface water primarily contains five heavy metals: copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg), while water sediments primarily contain seven heavy metals: Cu, cadmium (Cd), Pb, chromium (Cr), Zn, As, and Hg. The main heavy metals present in the human body are Pb, Hg, As, and Cd. By reviewing previous articles, it was found that heavy metal concentrations in human blood are higher than those in surface water, suggesting uncertainties in the heavy metal content of surface water and its tendency to settle at the bottom. Furthermore, a comparison of heavy metal content in sediments revealed that Hg is the most readily absorbed heavy metal by the human body and is also a toxic environmental pollutant. Within the cell, Hg is highly toxic to mitochondria and may cause oxidative stress and neurodegenerative disease. This study concludes that water sediments serve as the major source of pollution in the human body and pose significant health risks, thereby necessitating the implementation of effective preventive measures.

Abstract:Heavy metals in ocean may accumulate in seafood through food web and pose risks to human health. This study investigated the occurrence, trophic magnification, and health risks of 7 heavy metals in 20 marine organisms (n = 222) in Laizhou Bay (LZB), China. Results showed that Zn was the most abundant metal, followed by Cu, As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb. The total concentrations of 7 heavy metals in the organisms ranked in the order of crab ˃ shellfish ˃ algae ˃ fish ˃ starfish. Interspecific differences were found in the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu and Cd in marine organisms from LZB. Crab and shellfish showed much higher enrichment ability of heavy metals than that of algae, starfish and fish. Cd is the most biological accumulated element with the mean biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) of 12.9. Stable isotope analysis showed a significant difference of δ15N among these five species (p < 0.01), and a food web was constructed accordingly. A biodilution pattern was found for Pb, As and Ni and no trophic interference in metal uptake was observed for Zn, Cu, Ni and Cr in the food web of LZB. The estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotients (THQs) of As and Cd indicated an adverse health effect on consumption of the seafood. The mean lifetime cancer risks (LCRs) for Cd and As suggested a potential carcinogenic effect on consumption of these seafood. This study provides a basis for health risk assessment of heavy metals in marine foods.

Abstract:Informal electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling sites pose substantial health risks to surrounding environments and populations, yet they are not properly regulated. In this study, the soil levels of copper, lead, cadmium, eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 18 polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) were measured at two e-waste recycling sites in South China between 2014 and 2019. Both sites have been abandoned for natural restoration. Our results indicate that the mean Cd and PCDD/F levels at Site A in 2019 were higher than those recommended by current safety guidelines. Meanwhile, the highest exposure among children was 1.36 × 10− 2 mg/(kg·d) for Cu, followed by 5.05 × 10 −3 mg/(kg·d) for Pb, 9.71 ng/(kg·d) for PBDEs, and 6.82 ng TEQ/(kg·d) for PCDD/Fs. Children were at elevated risk for health problem posed by Pb and Cu exposure at both sites (hazard quotient > 1) and by PCDD/Fs at Site A. Further risk assessment was conducted on the target organs and endpoints of heavy metals and PCDD/Fs. The hazard index (HI) for the target organ mixed-risk of heavy metals was high (HI = 1.27), as was that of PCDD/Fs (HI = 1.66), which can disrupt endocrine function and pose a risk of reproductive toxicity in children. Owing to incomplete cleaning, contaminants persist in soils over long periods and may harm nearby environments and communities. Our study demonstrates that heavy metal, PBDE, and PCDD/F contamination have not yet been remediated, and intervention is needed to reduce pollution and associated risks in areas affected by e-waste.

Abstract:Nonferrous metallurgy is causing significant concerns due to its emissions of heavy metals into environment, degrading environmental quality, and consequently posing high risks to human health. In this study, the concentration levels of Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), and Arsenic (As) were investigated in soil, crop, well water, and fish samples collected around the Daye Copper Smelter in Hubei province, China, and the potential health risks were assessed for local children. The results showed that soils near the smelter were heavily polluted by Cd, Cu, Pb, and As, with the mean concentrations of 4.87, 195.26, 92.65, and 35.84 mg/kg, respectively, which were significantly higher than the values of soil Cd (0.18 mg/kg), Cu (32.84 mg/kg), Pb (28.46 mg/kg), and As (13.65 mg/kg) in the reference area (p < 0.001). The concentrations of Cd and As in vegetable samples collected from smelter-affected area exceeded the maximum permissible level (MPL) for food in China by 82% and 39%, respectively. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in rice grain harvested from smelter-affected area were 9.35 and 1.35 times higher than the corresponding MPL, respectively. The concentrations of Cd, As, and Cu in fish muscle from smelter-affected area exceeded the national MPL by 72%, 41%, and 24% of analyzed samples, respectively. The concentrations of Cd (p < 0.05) and As (p < 0.01) in well water were significantly higher in the smelter-affected area than those in the reference area, respectively. The health risks to local children in the smelter-affected area were 30.25 times higher than the acceptable level of 1, and most of the risks were resulted from Cd (46%), As (27%) and Pb (20%). The intake of crops was a major source (78%) to health risks for local children.

Abstract:Concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni) were measured in the foodstuffs, house dust, underground/drinking water, and soil from an electronic waste (e-waste) area in South China. Elevated concentrations of these potentially toxic metals were observed in the samples but not in drinking water. The health risks for metal exposure via food consumption, dust ingestion, and drinking water were evaluated for local residents. For the average residents in the e-waste area, the non-carcinogenic risks arise predominantly from rice (hazard index=3.3), vegetables (2.2), and house dust (1.9) for adults, while the risks for young children are dominated by house dust (15). Drinking water may provide a negligible contribution to risk. However, local residents who use groundwater as a water supply source are at high non-carcinogenic risk. The potential cancer risks from oral intake of Pb are 8×10(-5) and 3×10(-4) for average adults and children, and thus groundwater would have a great potential to induce cancer (5×10(-4) and 1×10(-3)) in a highly exposed population. The results also reveal that the risk from oral exposure is much higher than the risk from inhalation and dermal contact with house dust.
