Abstract:136 psychiatrists recruited 752 depressed outpatients considered to be a good indication for chemotherapy. Psychiatrists were trained both to diagnosis and to rating scales evaluation. The main features of the depressed syndrome was considered to be anxious in 21%, hostile in 14%, retarded in 12%, agitated in 12%, retarded and anxious in 41%. The symptomatology was present for more than six months in 2/3 of the patients. Among the psychological traits including some difficulties independently from the episode the existence of an aggressivity and/or hyperemotion were the more common (greater than 50%). 60% of the patients also qualified for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This population was treated by Amoxapine 200 mg/day. Improvement on the MADRS was of 65% after a month of treatment. Tolerance was very good for a tricyclic. Hostility and impulsivity predicted poor response while the existence of a retardation and/or of anxiety or hyperphagia predicted a good response.

Abstract:Recent efforts to replace petrochemicals with biodegradable, environmentally friendly materials like collagen, starch, chitin, alginate, and cellulose as corrosion inhibitors aim to reduce reliance on manufactured products. Chitosan is a biodegradable, economically viable, and intrinsically beneficial polymer with antimicrobial, film-forming, strong mechanical, and thermal stability properties, enhancing its inhibitory effects. This study comprehensively overviews common and recent advances using chitosan and derivative-based bioinspired corrosion inhibitors on different substrates and media. Various chitosan-based inhibitors have been developed via eco-friendly and economical methods with better physical and chemical properties. This review paper deals with different chitosan-based inhibitors, their preparation methods, the behaviour of corrosion on various substrates and in different corrosive electrolytes, and their expanding applicability in multiple industries. This review also clarifies the potential areas for future research and presents some difficulties that encourage researchers to act. Plusieurs tentatives récentes ont été réalisées pour remplacer les matériaux pétrochimiques par des matériaux biodégradables et écologiques comme inhibiteurs de corrosion. De nombreux polymères d'origine naturelle, y compris le collagène, l'amidon, la chitine, l'alginate et la cellulose, sont des choix intéressants car ils pourraient diminuer la dépendance aux produits manufacturés et avoir un impact environnemental favorable. Le chitosane est un biopolymère d'origine naturelle, biodégradable et rentable. Ce polymère unique possède des propriétés intrinsèques remarquables, des capacités antimicrobiennes et filmogènes, des propriétés mécaniques exceptionnellement fortes et une stabilité thermique substantielle, qui améliorent toutes ses effets inhibiteurs efficaces. Cette étude donne un aperçu complet des avancées courantes et récentes qui utilisent le chitosane et les inhibiteurs de corrosion bioinspirés à base de dérivés sur différents substrats et milieux. Des inhibiteurs variés à base de chitosane ont été développés par des méthodes écologiques et économiques présentant de meilleures propriétés physiques et chimiques. Cet article de synthèse traite des différents inhibiteurs à base de chitosane, de leurs méthodes de préparation, du comportement à la corrosion sur des substrats variés et dans différents électrolytes corrosifs, ainsi que de leur applicabilité croissante dans de multiples industries. Cette synthèse clarifie également les domaines potentiels de recherche future et présente certaines difficultés qui encouragent les chercheurs à agir.

Abstract:The polar head and a hydrophobic long alkyl chain end of surfactants show effective adsorption on the metal surfaces and metal/solution interfaces. The present study deals with the investigation of corrosion inhibition efficiency of chitosan modified with an anionic surfactant, namely sodium lauryl sulfate. The modified chitosan was characterized using spectral techniques such as ATR- FTIR and NMR, thermal analytical methods that include TGA and DSC. The surface charge and particle size distribution were analyzed using Zeta potential analyzer. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the water-soluble modified chitosan was evaluated using gravimetric and electrochemical methods. A maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency of 96.44% for 6 h of immersion period at 303 K was obtained. The adsorption process obeyed Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption mechanism involved both physisorption and chemisorption. Tafel and impedance studies showed results in agreement with the gravimetric method. Tafel plot indicates the inhibitor controlled both cathodic hydrogen evolution and anodic metal dissolution reactions. AC impedance study supports the increase in surface coverage of the metal surface by the inhibitor, forming a protective film. Further evidence comes from the surface characterization of the inhibited metal surface by contact angle measurement, SEM, EDAX spectra, and atomic force microscopic studies. DFT and Monte Carlo simulation studies showed a proper alignment with the experiment results.

Synthesis of Branched Chitosan Derivatives for Demulsification and Steel Anti-Corrosion Performances Investigation

Abstract:In the process of oil production, the existence of water inevitably brings numerous problems, such as the formation of emulsion and oil pipeline corrosion. It is an urgent need to develop multifunctional oilfield chemicals with greenness, demulsification and corrosion inhibition functions. In this study, we synthesized two eco-friendly branched chitosan derivatives (BH and CH), and investigated their demulsification and corrosion inhibition performance. Confocal laser micrographs revealed that BH and CH destabilized the water-in-oil emulsion through coalescence and flocculation, resulting in demulsification. The demulsification results showed that BH and CH at 500 mg∙L−1 removed up to 90.45% and 81.53% of the emulsified water, respectively. The dehydrated crude oil corroded the oil pipeline during transportation. The synthesized BH and CH were grafted quaternary ammonium groups and Schiff bases, which could adsorb onto iron surface to protect pipeline from corrosion. BH and CH at 500 mg∙L−1 inhibited the carbon steel corrosion by 85.70% and 83.56%, respectively from weight loss experiment in 8 wt% NaCl CO2-saturated solution at 60 ℃. Surface analysis techniques (SEM, EDX) and electrochemical techniques agreed with weight loss experimental results revealing effective corrosion inhibition. Experimental results indicated that both BH and CH showed satisfying demulsification and corrosion inhibition performances. It indicated that chitosan oligomer derivatives BH and CH showed satisfying application prospect in petrochemical industry.

Abstract:The increasing demand for corrosion prevention strategies that are both effective and sustainable is part of the research the background. Nonionic surfactants offer a potential replacement for traditional corrosion inhibitors. These surfactants are well-known for their low toxicity and biodegradability. The research involved conducting experimental tests (such as weight loss, polarization and impedance spectroscopy) and theoretical computations to investigate the role of nonionic surfactant (polyoxyethylene (7) tribenzyl phenyl ether) (PETPE) in controlling the corrosion of mild steel in hydrochloric acid (1.0 M HCl) environment. The results of the study demonstrated that PETPE exhibited significant corrosion inhibition properties for mild steel in HCl solution. The inhibition efficiency of PETPE was found to increase with increasing PETPE concentration. PETPE is an excellent corrosion inhibitor because it significantly reduces the rate of corrosion, as seen by the notable inhibition efficiency result (95.4%) at a relatively low dose of PETPE (100 ppm). Thermodynamic studies were used to discuss the fundamental mechanisms that control PETPE-acid interactions. The adsorption process followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating a monolayer adsorption of the PETPE on the mild surface. Theoretical computations confirm the strong inhibition behavior of PETPE. The innovative feature of this research is its comprehensive strategy, which integrates experimental studies and theoretical simulations to evaluate the impact of PETPE on the corrosion control of mild steel in hydrochloric acid. The combined effort has the ability to supply valuable knowledge into the mechanisms of corrosion that will lead to the establishment of powerful corrosion control strategies.

Abstract:• Three novel dendritic chitosan derivatives were first synthesized as green and powerful corrosion inhibitors. • The maximum inhibition efficiencies of three dendritic chitosan derivatives in 1M/L HCl solution were 87.55%, 85.55% and 86.12%, respectively. • Based on quantum chemical calculation, Theoretical calculations support the experimental results. • Three novel dendritic chitosan derivatives were predominantly anodic mixed–type corrosion inhibitors. In the process of exploration and development of oil and gas fields, the acidic environment of oil reservoir, production and transport processes cause corrosion of pipelines and equipment, resulting in huge economic losses and production safety risks. Corrosion inhibitors were widely used in oil industry because of simple operation process and economical. In this study, three environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors were synthesized based on the natural polysaccharide chitosan. Corrosion inhibition of three dendritic chitosan derivatives (We name them BH, CH and DH) on mild steel in 1 mol/L HCl solution with natural ventilation system was evaluated by weight loss experiment, electrochemical analysis and surface morphology characterization. The experimental results showed that when the three dendritic chitosan derivatives added in the corrosive medium were 500 mg L −1 , the corrosion inhibition efficiencies were all more than 80%. Based on quantum chemical calculation, inhibition mechanisms of three dendritic chitosan derivatives were investigated according to molecular structures. The results showed that the benzene ring, Schiff base and N atom contained in the molecule were the active centers of electron exchange, which were more likely to form a film on the carbon steel surface, thereby slowing or inhibiting corrosion. The results also predicted the corrosion inhibition effect BH > DH > CH, which was consistent with the experimental conclusion.

Use of orlistat to treat chylous ascites: a case report

Abstract:Orlistat, a potent lipase inhibitor that prevents fatty acid absorption, has been used effectively in the management of obesity. We present the first case describing the use of orlistat to treat chylous ascites. A 47 year-old Hispanic man with hepatitis C and alcohol cirrhosis was admitted with severe abdominal distention and dyspnea. He had a history of refractory ascites requiring serial paracentesis. Due to diabetes-associated renal insufficiency, he was on minimal diuretics. He was afebrile and stable. The physical exam demonstrated stigmata of chronic liver disease, decreased right breath sounds, and tense ascites. Blood tests showed a baseline chronic anemia, total bilirubin 2.2, INR 1.4, and albumin 1.4. Previously the ascitic fluid was clear with a high SAAG. On this admission however, the ascitic fluid was milky, pink-colored with triglyceride 585, total protein 0.7, albumin <0.1, RBC 8850, and WBC 300. He was concurrently found to have a new large right pleural effusion that was also milky in appearance with triglyceride 691. A nuclear medicine macroaggregated albumin study confirmed the chylothorax to be of hepatic origin. Extensive testing of the ascitic and pleural fluids showed negative cytology and cultures, including AFB. A colonoscopy and bone marrow biopsy were also normal. The chylous ascites and chylothorax were attributed to cirrhosis, and the patient was placed on a low-fat diet supplemented by medium chain triglycerides (MCT) oil. The chylous ascites and chylothorax responded poorly, however. It was later determined to be due to dietary noncompliance. In an effort to limit his dietary fat intake, orlistat was then started with each meal. The MCT oil was taken independently. After orlistat supplementation, the chylous ascites and chylothorax both resolved. Although the high volume ascites and hydrothorax persisted, the ascitic triglyceride fell to 66 and pleural effusion triglyceride fell to 247. After placement of a TIPS shunt, the ascites and pleural effusion completely resolved. Chylous ascites can have various causes, including cirrhosis. Irrespective of the cause, the traditional management has been a low-fat diet supplemented with MCT oil. As our case shows, however, this can be difficult to implement successfully even in a hospital setting. We demonstrated that in this situation orlistat can be used effectively as an aid to achieve a truly low-fat diet.

Abstract:Steel alloys are significant industrial substances, but they generally suffer severe corrosion under harsh conditions. Using inhibitors is an efficacious method to impede corrosion. So, in this study, two novel natural surfactants based on soybean oil have been synthesized by a facile route, namely, 1-(bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-1-oxooctadecan-9-yl sulfate 2-hydroxyethan-1-aminium (CSM) and–N-(C 2 H 4 -OH) 2 ; 1-(bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-1-oxooctadecan-9-yl sulfate bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminium (CSD), and their chemical structures were elucidated by physical–chemical approaches, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and surface activity measurements. The inhibitive effect of natural surfactants (CSM and CSD) on the C-steel corrosion in CO 2 -saturated 3.5% NaCl has been estimated in this investigation by electrochemical and surface analyses including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), linear polarization resistance (LPR) corrosion rate, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field-emission scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM/EDX) approaches. The EIS study reveals the value of R p augmented to an increase of 913.5 Ω cm 2 with a protection capacity of 96.1% at 150 ppm (CSD). The outcomes of PDP suggested that CSM and CSD are mixed-type inhibitors. XPS and FESEM/EDX analyses determined the protective film formation on a metal interface having undamaged surface morphology and more homogeneities in the occurrence of the surfactant. Moreover, the adsorption of natural surfactants on the metal substrate takes place based on the model of Langmuir isotherm. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were selected for attaining basic atomic/electronic-scale details about the prepared surfactants, which support the practical findings. This study is intended to investigate the protection of C-steel using sweet service conditions with green extract surfactants.

Abstract:Among the biodegradable polysaccharide, chitosan is widely present in the cell membranes of bacteria and algae and in the cell walls of higher plants. As a promising biopolymer, chitosan has great potential as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor. Herein, two synthetic chitosan derivatives (N-phenylthiourea chitosan (CS-PT), N-phenyl-O-benzylthiourea chitosan (CS-PT-Bn)) were investigated as high-efficient acidic corrosion inhibitors to deal with the corrosion issue of carbon steel. The anti-corrosion property of the chitosan derivatives was explored by electrochemical tests, surface characterization and theoretical calculations. The experimental results indicate that both CS-PT and CS-PT-Bn present high-efficient inhibition performance with the inhibition efficiency of 98.4% and 98.5% at the concentration of 100 mg/L, respectively. Their adsorption mechanism at steel/solution interface is revealed by quantum chemical calculations, molecular dynamics (MD) and GFN-xTB calculations. It is found that CS-PT and CS-PT-Bn adsorb at the steel/solution interface by forming Fe-N and Fe-S bonds. Compared to CS-PT molecule, the introduction of benzyl group endows CS-PT-Bn molecule with stronger electrostatic effect and hydrophobicity, which favors the interfacial adsorption of CS-PT-Bn molecule on carbon steel surface.
Polymeric surfactants as ideal substitutes for sustainable corrosion protection: A perspective on colloidal and interface properties

Abstract:Surfactants are well known for their colloidal and corrosion inhibition potential (CIP) due to their strong propensity to interact with metallic surfaces. However, because of their small molecular size and the fact that they are only effective at relatively high concentrations, their application in aqueous phase corrosion inhibition is often restricted. Polymeric surfactants, a unique class of corrosion inhibitors, hold the potential to eradicate the challenges associated with using surfactants in corrosion inhibition. They strongly bond with the metallic surface and offer superior CIP because of their macromolecular polymeric structure and abundance of polar functional groups. In contrast to conventional polymeric corrosion inhibitors, the inclusion of polar functional groups also aids in their solubilization in the majority of popular industry-based electrolytes. Some of the major functional groups present in polymeric surfactants used in corrosion mitigation include O (ether), glycidyl (cyclic ether), -CONH2 (amide), -COOR (ester), -SO3H (sulfonic acid), -COOH (carboxyl), -NH2 (amino), - + NR3/- + NHR2/- + NH2R/- + NH3 (quaternary ammonium), -OH (hydroxyl), -CH2OH (hydroxymethyl), etc. The current viewpoint offers state-of-the-art information on polymer surfactants as newly developing ideal alternatives for conventional corrosion inhibitors. The industrial scale-up, colloidal, coordination, adsorption properties, and structural requirements of polymer surfactants have also been established based on the knowledge obtained from the literature. Finally, the challenges, drawbacks, and potential benefits of using polymer surfactants have also been discussed.

Abstract:The issue of the effects of corrosion on structural integrity of metal surfaces has been a question of concern for some time. The uses of chemical corrosion inhibitors are common in production and processing operations. Nevertheless, the challenge is to develop a new class of corrosion inhibitors to protect the materials, which are environment friendly under various conditions. Surfactants as corrosion inhibitors are environmentally acceptable and are very economical and easily available. The aim of this review article is to delineate the ability of surfactants to inhibit the corrosion on different metal surfaces. Various potential application and properties of different types surfactants have also been discussed. Various parameters like, effect of surfactant concentration, temperature and the mechanism of corrosion inhibition and mode of adsorption are also discussed in this review article.

Abstract:Two novel chitosan derivatives (water soluble and acid soluble) modified with thiocarbohydrazide were produced by a quick and easy technique using formaldehyde as links. The novel compounds were synthesized and then characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Their surface morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy. These chitosan derivatives could produce pH-dependent gels. The behavior of mild steel in 5 % acetic acid, including both inhibitors at various concentrations, was investigated using gravimetric and electrochemical experiments. According to the early findings, both compounds (TCFACN and TCFWCN) functioned as mixed-type metal corrosion inhibitors. Both inhibitors showed their best corrosion inhibition efficiency at 80 mg L-1. TCFACN and TCFWCN, showed approximately 92 % and 94 % corrosion inhibition, respectively, at an optimal concentration of 80 mg L-1, according to electrochemical analysis. In the corrosion test, the water contact angle of the polished MS sample at 87.90 °C was reduced to 51 °C. The water contact angles for MS inhibited by TCFACN and TCFWCN in the same electrolyte were greater, measuring 78.10 °C and 93.10 °C, respectively. The theoretical results also support the experimental findings.

Abstract:The corrosion of industrial material is a costly problem associated with global economic losses reaching trillions of US dollars in the repair of failures. Injecting corrosion inhibitors is the most practically promising method for decelerating corrosion reactions and protecting surfaces. Recent investigations have focused on surfactants as corrosion inhibitors due to their amphiphilic nature, low cost, and simple chemical preparation procedures. This study aims to investigate the performance of an environment-friendly Quaternium-22 (Q-22) surfactant which is widely used in cosmetics for C-steel corrosion inhibition in a 5 M HCl medium. Weight loss experiments were performed at different concentrations and immersion times, presenting a maximum efficiency at 2.22 mmol·L−1. The influence of Q-22 on the corrosion behavior of C-steel was elucidated using non-destructive electrochemical measurements. The overall results revealed that adding varied concentrations of Q-22 significantly decreases the corrosion rate of C-steel. The results revealed the physisorption nature of Q-22 onto the C-steel surface, with adsorption following the Freundlich isotherm (∆= −16.40 kJ.mol−1). The relative inhibition performance of Q-22 was also evaluated by SEM and AFM analyses. Lastly, quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) demonstrated that Q-22 has promising molecular features concerning the anticorrosive mechanism.

Abstract:In the exploitation of seawater resources, the transported pipelines are frequently corroded, resulting in economic losses and environmental pollution. The development of corrosion inhibitors is an effective measure to mitigate the corrosion of metals in seawater. In this work, novel chitosan oligosaccharide derivatives (CF) were synthesized as fluorescent eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor by modifying fluorescent monomers. The characterization of CF revealed excellent fluorescence intensity, promising the potential for on-line detection. The inhibition performance of CF on P110 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was investigated through experimental evaluation and theoretical analysis. The electrochemical measurements indicated that the corrosion inhibition efficiency was increased from 61.00 % to 91.19 % with the introduction of fluorane. Adsorption isotherm and XPS analysis demonstrated that CF is designed to protect metal by forming the composite film on P110 through physical and chemical adsorption. In addition, theoretical calculations revealed differences in the interaction energies, radial distribution functions and diffusion coefficients of inhibitors on the Fe (110) surface. These theoretical results aligned with the experiments and confirmed the excellent ability of CF in metal corrosion protection from the molecular perspective. This new chitosan derivative provides new possibilities for the development of the green composite inhibitor that allows on-line detection.

Abstract:Novel anionic surfactants with phosphate group were synthesized and characterized by using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic analyses. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and degree of dissociation of counter-ions were determined and discussed from conductivity measurements. The biodegradability of these surfactants was determined and discussed. Their corrosion inhibition effect on the carbon steel (CS) in 0.5M H2SO4 solution has been evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and weight loss methods. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing the inhibitor concentration but decreases with the temperature increasing. The adsorption of inhibitors on the carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Polarization curves show that the synthesized inhibitors are mixed-type inhibitors. Thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and kinetic were obtained from weight loss at different temperatures (25–60°C).

Abstract:As corrosion inhibitors, a series of new amide derivatives of 13‐docosenoic acid was synthesized in yields of above 90% by reacting 13-docosenoic acid with primary and secondary aliphatic and aromatic amines. The inhibition efficiencies (%IEs) of these compounds at various concentrations for the suppression of corrosion of mild steel in 1.00 M HCl exposed for 96 h (4 days) at temperatures in the range 298–333 K were measured via gravimetric corrosion measurements. At 100 ppm, all compounds yielded satisfactory corrosion %IE in 1.00 M HCl; compounds 2 and 7 exhibited remarkable %IE of 70.0 and 74.7%, respectively. The results of gravimetric measurements further revealed that compound 7 performed excellently at 60 oC, with %IE = 96.8 at 500 ppm. Quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) calculations helped predict that compound 7 should have more aromatic character, enabling it to serve as a donor-center for the empty d-orbital of the metal atoms, leading to higher corrosion IE. The adsorption of the inhibitor molecules on the surface of mild steel followed the Langmuir adsorption model, and the free energy of adsorption (ΔGads) value indicated that the inhibitors are adsorbed through a combined physisorption and chemisorption mechanism to provide effective surface coverage.

Abstract:Two water-soluble chitosan derivatives of quaternary amine salt chitosan and N-(4-diethylaminobenzyl) quaternary ammonium chitosan were synthesised, characterised and deployed as corrosion inhibitors for X80 pipeline steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution. DAC exhibits better corrosion inhibition performance due to more adsorption centres and more stable adsorption. The potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed that the inhibitors are mixed inhibitors dominated by the anodic reaction. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the corrosion inhibition process is charge-transfer control. The adsorption of inhibitors obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and surface analysis (SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle) are also discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis of novel corrosion inhibitors and biocide metal complex nanoparticle surfactants was achieved through the reaction of sulfonamide with selenious acid to produce a quaternary ammonium salt. Platinum and cobalt surfactants were then formed by complexing the first products with platinum (II) or cobalt (II) ions. The surface properties of these surfactants were then investigated, and the free energy of form micelles (ΔGomic) and adsorption (ΔGoads) was determined. The obtained cationic compounds were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel dissolution in 1N HCl medium. The results of gravimetric and electrochemical measurements showed that the obtained inhibitors were excellent corrosion inhibitors. The anti-sulfate-reducing bacteria activity known to cause corrosion of oil pipes was obtained by the inhibition zone diameter method for the prepared compounds, which were measured against sulfate-reducing bacteria. FTIR spectra, elemental analysis, H1 NMR spectrum, and 13C labeling were performed to ensure the purity of the prepared compounds.

Abstract:Oilfield chemicals play an important role in oilfield drilling, well completion, water injection, enhanced oil recovery, and gathering and transportation. The development of novel, environmentally friendly, multifunctional oilfield chemicals is an urgent research direction. In this study, two hyperbranched natural polysaccharides (AH and EH) were synthesized by modifying the biodegradable natural polysaccharide chitosan. AH and EH molecules contain a large number of polar groups, which interact with iron and adsorb on the iron surface, thus inhibiting corrosion. At the same time, the hyperbranched structure has a good bridging and aggregation effect on the dispersed phase in the emulsion, so as to achieve demulsification. In accordance with the strong fluorescence effect of crude oil, laser confocal microscopy was used instead of optical microscopy to observe the microscopic morphology of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. The demulsification tests indicate that the highest dehydration efficiencies of 86.24 % (AH) and 82.15 % (EH) were attained at a concentration of 500 mg L-1. The maximum corrosion inhibition efficiencies [90.24 % (AH) and 88.55 % (EH), at a concentration of 500 mg L-1] were calculated by weight loss experiments, micromorphology analysis, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Quantum chemical theory of the two natural polysaccharides was applied to further interrogate the molecular space structure. Laboratory test results indicate that the modified natural polysaccharides AH and EH exhibited good demulsification performance for W/O emulsions, and substantially inhibited the corrosion of carbon steel in brine. This study provides new ideas for developing natural polysaccharides as environmentally friendly, multifunctional oilfield chemicals.

Abstract:In this study, the anticorrosive properties of a series of sodium methyl ester sulfonate anionic surfactants on a carbon steel were estimated for an oilfield injection water collected from a well of Hassi R'Mel region—Algeria, known as Baremian water, and are compared to those of sodium dodecyl sulfate. This class of surfactants was synthesized from fatty acids by a photochemical process and present good physico-chemical properties and good biodegradability. The inhibition performance was evaluated by weight loss and electrochemical techniques: linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that these surfactants are good inhibitors; the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing concentration surfactants. In addition, the increase of chain length surfactants leads to the best inhibition efficiency for sodium sulfo palmityl methyl ester surfactant with 95.27, 98.20, and 95% via weight loss, linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy–Energy dispersive X-ray allowed the visualization of a good adhesion of the protective deposit formed by the surfactants on the carbon steel surface including the elements presents on this surface as sodium and sulfur. The adsorption of these surfactants shows the maximum adherence to the Langmuir model and the values of Gibbs free energy of adsorption indicated that the inhibitor molecules are physically adsorb onto the metal surface.
