Abstract:Peak clusters are the main component of karst landforms, and their slopes are generally characterized by different land uses and serious soil erosion. Land use and slope position impact a range of factors, such as soil erosion, which in turn impacts the process of soil development and the patterns of soil properties. Karst hillslopes are generally characterized by different land uses. Land use and slope position impact soil erosion seriously, which in turn impacts the process of soil development and the patterns of soil properties. However, the impact of land use on soil physicochemical properties and the spatial variations and correlations between them are not fully understood on karst hillslopes. Therefore, nine sites had similar soil types, slope gradients, elevations, slope aspects and previous tillage practices were selected to conduct further research. This study was conducted to quantify the spatial distribution, variability and correlation of soil physical and chemical properties and stoichiometries as impacted by different land uses on a karst hillslope in Southwest China. Soil physical properties were significantly affected by slope position and soil depth. The soil bulk density and clay content increased with soil depth, while the opposite was true for the sand content. For the three land uses, the soil bulk density varied the most at the lower slope position, while clay and sand particles varied the most at the middle slope position. The mean spatial coefficient of variation (CV) of soil physical properties was ranked as sand (11.08%) > clay (7.77%) > bulk density (6.85%) > silt (3.81%). The mean spatial CV of soil chemical properties was ranked as available K (44.49%) > total P (16.77%) > total C (16.31%) > total N (13.09%) > available P (8.45%) > total K (7.51%). Overall, soil physicochemical properties exhibited significant spatial differences with slope location and land use on karst hillslopes. Soil chemical properties had greater spatial variation than physical properties, moreover, there were significant correlations between them. The results not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of land use on the erosion process and mechanism on karst hillslopes but also provide a scientific understanding of the sustainable restoration of karst ecosystems.

Assessing soil degradation under land-use change: insight from soil erosion and soil aggregate stability in a small karst catchment in southwest China

Abstract:Background Soil erodibility (K factor) and soil aggregate stability are often used to assess soil degradation in an erodible environment. However, their applicability under land-use change is uncertain, especially agricultural abandonment. Methods Different land-use types, including cropland, abandoned cropland, and native vegetation land, were converted into the successive stages following agricultural abandonment by space-for-time substitution approach in a small karst catchment, Southwest China. The indexes of soil aggregate stability and K factor of the Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC) model in soil profiles were calculated to identify which method is suitable to indicate soil degradation under land-use change. Results The indexes of soil aggregate stability in the soils at 0∼30 cm depth under native vegetation land were significantly larger than those under cropland and slightly larger than those under abandoned cropland. The K factor was not significantly different among the three land use examples because the EPIC model does not consider soil permeability. In the soil organic carbon (SOC)-rich soils (>2%), the K factor was significantly correlated with silt and clay content ranging within a narrow scope of near 0.010 t hm 2 h/hm 2 /MJ/mm. While in the SOC-poor soils, the K factor was significantly increased with decreasing SOC content and was significantly correlated with soil aggregate stability. Conclusions Soil aggregate stability is more suitable to indicate soil degradation under land-use change. Sufficient SOC in erodible soils would restrain soil degradation, while SOC loss can significantly increase soil erosion risk.

Abstract:Dystrophin, the protein product defective in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), is present in all types of muscle and in the brain. The function of the protein is unknown and its role in the brain is unclear, although 30% of DMD patients show nonprogressive mental retardation. We have therefore studied the localisation of dystrophin in cultures of normal and DMD human fetal neurons using antibodies raised to different regions of the protein. Dystrophin immunoreactivity was demonstrated in the soma and axon hillock of normal neurons and appeared to be associated with the inner part of the cell membrane, although some intracellular staining was also observed. Positive dystrophin staining was present only in cells with fully developed neuronal features, although not all the neurons were positive. Glial cells were always negative for the antigen. Immunostaining with antibodies to the brain spectrins indicate that the dystrophin antibodies did not cross‐react with these proteins. The possibility of cross‐reactivity with other proteins is discussed.

[Effects of Land Use Change on Soil Aggregate Stability and Soil Aggregate Organic Carbon in Karst Area of Southwest China]

Abstract:Investigating the relationship of soil aggregate stability with the organic carbon in the aggregate and its response to land use change is conducive to the estimation of soil carbon sink potential, improvement of rocky desertification, and rational land use in karst areas of Southwest China. In order to explore the effects of land use change on the composition and stability of soil aggregate stability as well as the content of aggregate organic carbon, the soil (0-30 cm) of five land use types (secondary forest, pomelo forest, paddy field, pepper forest, and dry land) was selected as the research object. The characteristics and correlation of soil aggregate components and organic carbon under different land use patterns were obtained, and the contribution of soil aggregates to the change in organic carbon after land use change was calculated. The results showed that the macroaggregates in the surface soil (0-15 cm) of the secondary forest, pomelo forest, and paddy field were 63.32%, 52.38%, and 47.77%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of dry land (23.70%), as was also seen in the lower layer (15-30 cm). The geometric mean diameter (GMD) and mean weight diameter (MWD) of soil aggregates in the secondary forest, pomelo forest, and paddy field were significantly higher than those in dry land. In the surface soil, the organic carbon of the secondary forest and paddy field was significantly higher than that of other land use patterns. By contrast, in the lower soil layer, only the organic carbon of the paddy field was significantly higher than that of the others. Under different land use patterns, the organic carbon content of aggregates followed the same order of macroaggregates > microaggregates > silt and clay, indicating that macroaggregates allowed soil organic carbon to accumulate, whereas silt and clay did the opposite. According to correlation analysis, the content of soil macroaggregates was significantly positively correlated with GMD, MWD, and soil aggregate organic carbon, suggesting that the increase in soil macroaggregates could improve the stability of soil aggregates and store more soil organic carbon. Further, as land use change may have significantly affected the soil aggregate, moderate development of forestry and paddy cultivation is suggested to improve the soil carbon sequestration potential in the karst area of Southwest China.
The Interactive Effects of Elevation, Precipitation and Lithology on Karst Rainfall and Runoff Erosivity

Abstract:Soil erosion, which is the prominent ecological and environmental problem in the karst regions of southwestern China, has seriously affected the regionecological conservation and economic development. Quantifying rainfall erosivity and runoff erosivity, can be a means to identify the dominant environmental factors involved in these mechanisms and provide a theoretical basis for mitigating soil and water loss. This aids determination of the measures required to control rocky desertification and promote the ecological restoration of karst areas. Accordingly, this study simulated the rainfall erosivity in the Sancha River Basin (SRB) between 1985 and 2014 using an adopted daily rainfall model according to the karst erosive rainfall standard. Based on the degree of rocky desertification in the karst areas, correction coefficients were applied to improve runoff erosivity calculation and estimate the runoff erosivity of the basin between 1993 and 2014. In addition, the dominant and interactive factors affecting rainfall/runoff erosivity of the diverse geomorphological types in the SRB were quantitatively identified using the geographical detector. Results showed that the rainfall erosivity between 1985 and 2014 averaged 6913.73 MJ.mm.ha(-1).h (-1), with an average runoff erosivity of 1121.37 m(4).km(-2).s(-1) between 1993 and 2014. Precipitation and elevation were found to be the dominant factors shaping the spatial distributions of rainfall/runoff erosivity in the SRB. Precipitation explained over 90% of the spatial distribution in rainfall erosivity, and the q value of precipitation for runoff erosivity had no direct relationship with time. Furthermore, the interactions of elevation and precipitation, elevation and lithology type had prominent effects on rainfall erosivity and runoff erosivity in the SRB, respectively. Among them, the compound effects of elevation and precipitation could explain more than 80% of rainfall erosivity. These findings should be essential for managing soil and water loss in the karst areas.
Spatial and temporal characteristics of soil erosion in a typical karst basin in southwest China and its response to the landscape pattern of rock desertification

Abstract:Abstract Soil erosion is a process of migration and redistribution of soil substances in the landscape, which is regulated by topography, vegetation, human activities and their spatial pattern. At the watershed scale, changes in landscape pattern are important factors in determining the degree of soil erosion. Taking Dabang River Basin as the study area, based on the three phases of land use data, remote sensing image data and daily rainfall data from eight stations in the basin in 2010, 2015 and 2020, the rocky desertification factor ( D ) was introduced into the general soil loss equation RUSLE to calculate the soil erosion in Karst and non-Karst Areas in 2010, 2015 and 2020 respectively. The relationship between landscape pattern and soil erosion was analyzed from two aspects: type level index and landscape level index. The results showed that: 1) From 2010 to 2020, the average soil erosion modulus in The Dabang River Basin decreased first and then increased. The average soil erosion modulus in the non-karst region was about twice that in the karst region, and the average soil erosion modulus in the karst region decreased first and then increased. The mean soil erosion modulus in the non-karst area showed an increasing trend; 2) Under different slope grades, the erosion was mainly slight and mild, and the area of slight erosion was the largest, and the area of very strong and severe erosion increased as the slope increased. the area of strong, very strong and severe erosion increased in the slope zone below 15°, the area of light and moderate erosion decreased, and the area of slight, strong and very strong erosion increased in the slope zone from 15 to 25°, and the area of slight erosion increased in the slope zone above 25° area increased and light, moderate and strong erosion area decreased in the slope zone above 25°; 3) The landscape pattern of the Dadang River Basin changed significantly from 2010 to 2020. At the landscape level, the number of patches increased and the average patch area decreased. At the type level, the area of paddy field, woodland and shrubland decreases and the area of dry land, grassland, construction land and water body increased, and the dominant land type in the watershed changed from woodland to grassland; 4) The amount of soil erosion was positively correlated with patch type area, landscape percentage, maximum patch index and aggregation index, and positively correlated with edge density; 5) There was a linear relationship between soil erosion and Shannon diversity index (SHDI) and Shannon mean index (SHEI) at landscape level. The results can provide reference for land use planning and soil and water conservation measures.

Abstract:Monitoring and evaluating the evolution of rocky desertification timely and studying the characteristics of soil erosion under different rainfall patterns are of great scientific significance for regional soil and water conservation, rocky desertification control and ecological environment construction. Four periods of remote sensing image data from 2005 to 2020 were selected to study the evolution characteristics of rocky desertification and its impact on soil erosion in the controlled boundary area of Shibantang hydrological station of Yeji River Watershed, Guizhou Province, China. According to the 408 erosive rainfall events, the soil erosion under different rainfall patterns in the watershed was analyzed. The results showed that: erosive rainfall events in the study area were mainly pattern A, accounting for 57.4% of the total rainfall events; the second was pattern B, accounting for 28.9% of the total rainfall events; the rainfall pattern of C occurred occasionally. Among them, pattern A was the main rainfall pattern leading to soil and water loss and had the largest contribution rate to soil erosion in the watershed. From 2005 to 2020, the area of rocky desertification showed a decreasing trend, accounting for 72.2% from 87.9%. Spatially, rocky desertification has mainly concentrated in the middle south of the watershed since 2010, while the rocky desertification mainly concentrated in the middle and north before 2010. The effects of different grades of rocky desertification on soil erosion were different, and the soil erosion modulus in areas with the medium, severe and extremely severe rocky desertification was generally small. The soil erosion modulus estimated by the RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) model was still much higher than that calculated by the data measured by the hydrological monitoring station. Therefore, the application of the RUSLE model in karst area needs to be further modified. These results can provide reference for rocky desertification control, soil erosion control and fragile ecosystem restoration in karst area.

Lithology‐mediated soil erodibility characteristics after vegetation restoration in the karst region of Southwest China

Abstract:Abstract Ecological restoration projects have significantly increased global vegetation cover and reduced soil erosion. However, it is very challenging to clarify the complex soil erosion mechanisms of limestone and dolomite in the southwest karst region and to identify the key factors affecting erosion. The study site has a subtropical monsoon climate with precipitation concentrated during the rainy season from May to September. In this study, four plantation restoration measures with a recovery time of approximately 16 years were selected, which included arbor forest, orchard, grassland, and cropland (control). Soil physical–chemical properties and soil erodibility K values were used to evaluate the soil erosion characteristics. The results showed that both limestone and dolomite exhibited lower soil bulk density as well as higher capillary porosity, and soil water‐stable aggregates after revegetation. The limestone and dolomite K values were reduced by 12%–15% and 15%–17%, respectively. However, the K value of limestone was 17.9% higher than that of dolomite, indicating that dolomite exhibited a higher stability. Through redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling, revegetation was found to reduce soil erosion by influencing the soil particle composition. The silt was the key factor influencing soil erosion, accounting for 84.4% and 78.2% of the variation in the limestone and dolomite K values, respectively. These findings suggest that vegetation restoration enhances soil erosion resistance; however, the effectiveness of restoration is controlled by the lithology in the southwest karst region. These findings provide a reference for soil and water management and vegetation restoration.

Abstract:Soil erosion is a prominent environmental problem in karst regions. Exploring the spatiotemporal variability of soil erosion and the factors that influence soil erosion is of great significance for regional soil erosion prevention and control. However, the mechanisms influencing the characteristic features of the karst basins, such as bedrock exposure and lithology, still need to be further explored. This study used GIS technology, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation model, Getis-Ord Gi*, and partial least squares regression (PLSR) to identify the dominant factors influencing soil erosion and the spatiotemporal variability of soil erosion in 31 sub-basins of the Dabang River Basin (DRB), a typical karst area of Southwest China, from 2010 to 2020. The results indicated that soil erosion in the DRB from 2010 to 2020 was generally decreasing, the mean soil erosion in the DRB in 2010, 2015 and 2020 was 18.46, 16.51 and 15.29 t ha −1 a −1 , respectively. During the study period, the area of slight erosion increased by 26.39% (706.54 km 2 ), while severe erosion enlarged by 26.36 km 2 . Spatially, the DRB was primarily affected by medium and slight soil erosion. The hot spot areas of soil erosion (key control areas) were mainly concentrated in the central and southern parts of the basin, decreasing each year, and the area of soil erosion hot pots has decreased from 43.22% to 20.60%. PLSR decoupling results show that elevation, bedrock exposure, land use type, interbedded limestone and clastic rock, and vegetation coverage were identified as the key variables affecting soil erosion, explaining 52.8% of soil erosion variability, with a high value of the Variable Importance on Projection (VIP) more than 1. These results can be used as a reference for comprehensive control of soil erosion and water loss in the basin.

Abstract:RECENTLY THERE HAS BEEN a surge of interest in automated clinical chemistry and of routine blood chemistry screening tests. Chemistry panels are being advocated for routine hospital admission studies, periodic health examinations, routine diagnostic surveys, detection of pre-disease, chemical fingerprinting and predictive medicine. Enthusiasm has been expressed for these screening tests since costs seem reasonable and the incidence of abnormal findings seems to be great. Cost reductions are realized in doing large numbers of tests with multi-channel analysis. However, fewer test channels might well be done more cheaply. The extra cost for more test channels may not be justified if these additional studies do not provide information significantly useful to the particular patient. Good medicine should not relate only to cost but primarily to good patient care. For example, if a routine admission study included a blood glucose and urea so that occult diabetes mellitus or renal insufficiency might be detected, it may not be pertinent to do routinely determinations of, say, sodium, chloride, carbon dioxide content and acid phosphatase, just because they can be done at little extra cost. It is already obvious from general surveys that there is no practical value in doing a serum acid phosphatase determination in a health evaluation screening study, and sodium, potassium, chloride and carbon dioxide content may also be of no value. Forestation Does Not Necessarily Reduce Soil Erosion in a Karst Watershed in Southwestern China

Abstract:Forestation as part of the Returning Farmland to Forest Project was implemented to mitigate soil erosion in southwestern China. However, whether forestation has effectively reduced soil erosion in southwestern China remains unclear, mostly because of the lack of monitoring forest cover change and soil erosion at watershed scales. We interpreted forest cover change from satellite images and simulated soil erosion changes for the period of 1986–2018 in the Chong’an River Basin with the Water and Tillage Erosion Model and Sediment Delivery Model. Our results show that the change in forest cover has the highest correlation coefficient with the sediment yield in the watershed, with an obvious inverse phase relationship between them for all the simulated years. From 2002 to 2014, large-scale forestation and frequent droughts caused the forest cover to vary, resulting in significant changes in the annual soil erosion amount. Because crevices favoring tree growth are more developed in limestone than in dolomite, the forest cover reduction on dolomite is significantly higher than that on limestone under severe droughts in karst areas. Our study implied that the function of forestation in preventing soil erosion depends on lithology in karst areas.
[Effects of Land Use Change on Constitution, Stability, and C, N, P Stoichiometric Characteristics of Soil Aggregates in Southwest China Karst]

Abstract:Responses of soil aggregate stability and nutrient stoichiometry to land use change are of great significance to the protection and restoration of fragile ecosystems. In order to explore the influence of the law of land use change on soil aggregate stability and C, N, and P nutrient stoichiometric characteristics in the karst ecosystem of Southwest China, a typical region of the Southwest China Karst was selected as the study area. A series of sample plots were established for the seven typical land use types, and the constitution; stability; and C, N, and P contents and stoichiometric ratios of soil aggregates were studied. The results showed that land use change significantly affected the soil aggregate stability. The soil aggregate stability of corn fields and abandoned land was relatively high, whereas that of grassland and bare land was relatively low. The soil aggregate stability generally decreased with the increase in soil layer. There were significant differences in the C, N, and P contents of soil aggregates between different land use types. The C and N contents of soil aggregates of open woodland and abandoned land were higher, the C and N contents of grassland were lower, and the P contents of soil aggregates of bare land and abandoned land were relatively higher. Land use change also significantly affected the stoichiometric ratio of soil aggregate C, N, and P. The C:N of soil aggregates of arbor forest land, open forest land, and abandoned land was relatively high, and that of grassland was the lowest. The C:P of soil aggregates of arbor woodland and open woodland was higher than that in shrub woodland and grassland. The soil aggregate N:P of arbor forest land, open forest land, and shrub forest land was higher and was significantly higher than that of bare land and abandoned land. There were significant or extremely significant correlations between the constitution and stability of soil aggregates and the stoichiometric characteristics of soil aggregate C, N, and P. Soil aggregate stability was positively correlated with the mass fraction of large soil aggregates. The mass fraction of large soil aggregates increased, and the stability of aggregates correspondingly increased, which was conducive to the maintenance and accumulation of soil C, N, and P nutrients. These results are of great significance for vegetation restoration, soil and water conservation, and land use regulation in karst ecosystems of Southwest China.

Abstract:Based on extraction of environmental information from lake (reservoir) sediment, this paper carried out systematic studies on effects of land use/land cover changes on soil erosion in last 40 years in Shibanqiao catchment of Guanling County, located in the southwest of Guizhou Province. Seven sediment cores were retrieved and analysis of activity of 137Cs of sediment samples was undertaken. The information of soil erosion in each phase was deduced, and then integrating it with land use/land cover changes in corresponded phase, the author took a further step to interpret the effects of land use/land cover changes on soil erosion. Such conclusions were drawn: (1) the rate and amount of soil erosion is related not only with land use/land cover regime but also with whether there are abundant erodible sources provided for erosion. (2) During 1960 to 1978, in the beginning of land use change, naturally selective erosion was dominant. Then the percentage of surface soil erosion increased, and became dominant in the subsequent phase. Soil erosion was decreased but rocky desertification expanded in a higher rate. So it can be deduced that there was a lag between the development of rocky desertification and soil erosion;(4) The accelerated soil erosion resulted from the stir of soil during the implementation of ecological engineering was detected between 1990 to 2002, in view of which, a suggestion was put forward in this paper that ecological constructions and engineering towards water and soil maintenance should pay attention to the problem of soil erosion followed, especially should avoid the stir of soil. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The formation mechanism and influencing factors identification of soil erosion are the core and frontier issues of current research. However, studies on the multi-factor synthesis are still relatively lacked. In this study, the simulation of soil erosion and its quantitative attribution analysis have been conducted in different geomorphological types in a typical karst basin based on the RUSLE model and the geodetector method. The influencing factors, such as land use type, slope, rainfall, elevation, lithology and vegetation cover, have been taken into consideration. Results show that the strength of association between the six influencing factors and soil erosion was notably different in diverse geomorphological types. Land use type and slope were the dominant factors of soil erosion in the Sancha River Basin, especially for land use type whose power of determinant (q value) for soil erosion was much higher than other factors. The q value of slope declined with the increase of relief in mountainous areas, namely it was ranked as follows: middle elevation hill> small relief mountain> middle relief mountain. Multi-factors interactions were proven to significantly strengthen soil erosion, particularly for the combination of land use type with slope, which can explain 70% of soil erosion distribution. It can be found that soil erosion in the same land use type with different slopes (such as dry land with slopes of 5° and above 25°) or in the diverse land use types with the same slope (such as dry land and forest with a slope of 5°), varied much. These indicate that prohibiting steep slope cultivation and Grain for Green Project are reasonable measures to control soil erosion in karst areas. Based on statistics of soil erosion difference between diverse stratifications of each influencing factor, results of risk detector suggest that the amount of stratification combinations with significant difference accounted for 55% at least in small relief mountain and middle relief mountainous areas. Therefore, the spatial heterogeneity of soil erosion and its influencing factors in different geomorphological types should be investigated to control karst soil loss more effectively.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding the mechanisms underlying soil and water loss in karst basins is beneficial for water resources management and soil and water loss conservation. However, the effects of rainfall, sediment source–sink landscape, and hydrological connectivity on runoff sediment characteristics in karst basins are unclear. This study used sediment source–sink landscape and hydrological connectivity theories and a generalized additive model to analyze the changes and combined effects of sediment source–sink landscape patterns, hydrological connectivity, and rainfall on runoff sediment from 2000 to 2020 in the Yeji River basin in the karst region of southwest China. The results indicated that the average sediment transport modulus and runoff modulus in the Yeji River basin during 2000–2020 were 144 t·km −2 ·a −1 and 15 L·s −1 ·km −2 , respectively. The karst surface and subsurface double‐layer hydrological structure resulted in a lower sediment transport modulus than in non‐karst areas. The sediment‐source landscape area decreased, sediment‐sink landscape area increased, and sediment source–sink landscape load ratio index slightly increased. Hydrological connectivity exhibited a decreasing trend over time, but the overall change was small. Changes in source–sink landscape patterns significantly affected hydrological connectivity. As the main affecting factor, rainfall and its combined effects with sediment source–sink landscape patterns and hydrological connectivity explained 85% and 95% of the variances in runoff, and 40% and 63% of the variances in sediment, respectively. These results suggest that a rational layout of the sediment source–sink landscape can effectively improve hydrological connectivity and regulate the soil and water loss process. Our findings have important implications for karst basin ecological restoration and protection.

Abstract:Soil erosion intensity continued to decrease from 1980s to 2020, and the contribution of LULC impacts ranged from 74%–195%. Predictions of land use subtypes indicated that LULC may be stable after 2020. The major driving factor of soil erosion changes may shift from LULC to precipitation after 2020. The variations in soil erosion significantly impact regional ecological security. Under rapid urbanisation, extensive ecological restoration and climate change, soil erosion development in the red soil region of southern China is ambiguous. Therefore, this study investigated the current (1980s–2020) and future (2050) erosion characteristics in a typical soil erosion control catchment (Changting section catchment) in this region by using the Cellular Automata Markov model and CMIP6 data to predict future scenarios and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation to estimate soil erosion. The results showed significant changes in the vegetation coverage of major land uses from 1980s to 2020, which was mainly caused by continuous soil and water conservation (SWC). The land use subtypes that were obtained by reclassifying land use based on the threshold of vegetation cover on soil erosion control, reflect a continuous transformation from those with poor SWC effectiveness to those with great SWC effectiveness. Therefore, the estimated soil erosion intensity continued to decrease from 1980s to 2020, and the contribution of land use/land cover (LULC) impacts ranged from 74%–195%. However, predictions of land use subtypes indicated that LULC may be stable after 2020; thus, soil erosion changed little when the climate was almost unchanged in 2050. Under climate change scenarios, soil erosion may increase by 111%–121%, and the contribution of precipitation impacts was 63%–66%. The major driving factor of soil erosion changes may shift from LULC to precipitation after 2020. Therefore, in the future, the potential for reducing soil erosion by vegetation restoration may be limited, and more engineering measures should be applied to address the erosion risk caused by climate changes. This study provides prospects for land use/land cover and soil erosion in the red soil region of southern China.

Abstract:Numerous soil water repellency (SWR) studies have investigated the possible causes of this temporal phenomenon, yet there remains a lack of knowledge on the order of importance of the main driving forces of SWR in the context of changing environmental conditions under grassland ecosystems. To study the separate and combined effects of soil texture, climate, and grassland cover type on inducing or altering SWR, four sites from different climatic and soil regions were selected: Ciavolo (CI, IT), Csólyospálos (CSP, HU), Pwllpeiran (PW, UK), Sekule (SE, SK). The investigated parameters were the extent (determined by repellency indices RI, RIc and RIm) and persistence (determined by water drop penetration time (WDPT) and water repellency cessation time, WRCT) of SWR, as well as field water (Sw) and ethanol (Se) sorptivity, water sorptivity of hydrophobic soil state (Swh) water sorptivity of nearly wettable soil state (Sww) and field hydraulic conductivity (K). Our findings showed an area of land has a greater likelihood of being water repellent if it has a sandy soil texture and/or a high frequency of prolonged drought events. Water infiltration was positively correlated with all the sorptivities (r = 0.32–0.88), but was mostly negatively correlated with RI (r = – 0.54 at CI), WDPT (r = – 0.47 at CI) and WRCT (r = – 0.58 at CI). The importance of natural and synanthropized vegetation covers with regards to SWR was not coherent; moving to regions having coarser texture or moving to drier climatic zones led to higher risk of SWR conditions. Climate change has been predicted to lead to more frequent extreme weather events and prolonged dry periods across Europe, which will most likely increase the extent of SWR-affected areas and increase the role of SWR in water management of grassland ecosystems. Therefore, there is a need to determine SWR risk zones to prevent decreases in soil moisture content, soil fertility, carbon and nitrogen sink potentials, as well as biomass production of the related agro-ecosystems.

Abstract:With the global land use/land cover (LULC) and climate change, the ecological resilience (ER) in typical Karst areas has become the focus of attention. Its future development trend and its spatial response to natural and anthropogenic factors are crucial for understanding the changes of ecologically fragile areas to human behavior. However, there is still a lack of relevant quantitative research. The study systematically analyzed the characteristics of LULC changes in Southwest China with typical Karst over the past 20 years. Drawing on the landscape ecology research paradigm, a potential-elasticity-stability ER assessment model was constructed. Revealing the characteristics and heterogeneity of the spatial distribution, annual evolution, and development trend of ER in the past and under different scenarios of shared socioeconomic pathways and representative concentration pathways (SSP-RCP) in the future. In addition, the spatial econometric model was utilized to reveal the spatial effect response mechanism of ER, and adaptive development strategies were proposed to promote the sustainable development of Southwest China. The study found that : (1) In the past 20 years, the LULC in Southwest China showed an accelerated change trend, the ER decreased declined in general, and there was significant spatial heterogeneity, showing the spatial distribution pattern of "west is larger than east, south is larger than north, and reduction in the west was slower than that in the east." (2) Under the same SSP scenario, with the increase of RCP emission concentration, the area of the lowest-resilience increased significantly, and the area of the highest-resilience decreased. (3) The woodland was the largest contributor to ER per unit area in the Southwest China, and grassland was the main LULC type, which had a prominent impact on the ER of the study area. (4) The average precipitation and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were significant natural drivers of ER in the study area, and the economic growth, innovation, and optimization of industrial structure contributed to the ER of Southwest China. Overall, the integration of quantitative assessment and multi-scenario-based modeling not only provides new perspectives for understanding the pattern of change and response mechanisms, but also provides valuable references for other typical Karst regions around the world to achieve sustainable development.
