Abstract:Mineral organic complexes are essential for the storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils. They are also affecting the CO2 emission reduction goals of known as the "double carbon target" (carbon peaking and carbon neutrality), as well as a landing point for achieving the 4 per 1,000 carbon enhancement initiative. As a typical soil mineral, calcium (Ca) plays a very critical role in regulating the accumulation of global organic carbon. Although calcium carbonate (CaCO3) has been shown to mediate the SOC accumulation process, especially in northern China, the relationship between Ca and SOC, and the underlying microbial mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, five soils (black soil, light chernozem soil, fluvo-aquic soil, sierozem soil, and loess soil) with different CaCO3 contents (4.29, 17.45, 98.66, 131.85, 143.82 g/kg, respectively) were selected to reveal the relationship among CaCO3, the SOC fraction and the chemical structure, and the bacterial community. The content of CaCO3 was determined by the gas volume method. Solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to analyze the chemical structure of SOC, and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to analyze the bacterial community. The results showed that the contents of particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MOC) in macro-aggregates were higher than that in microaggregates, and that POC was significantly higher than MOC in soil with high CaCO3. With an increase in the CaCO3 content, there was a decrease in the proportion of aromatic C and alkyl C, but an increase in the proportion of O-alkyl C in SOC, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi grew, and that of Acidobacteria decreased. Moreover, the overall diversity of the soil bacteria likewise showed a decreasing trend. High CaCO3 soils showed a positive correlation between Acidobacteria and macro-aggregates, and a negative correlation with clay and silt, when compared to low CaCO3 soils. Also, Chloroflexi and Gemmatimonadota showed the opposite relationship with SOC aggregates. CaCO3 influenced the relationship between SOC (fraction and chemical structure) and the bacterial community, resulting in changes in the SOC content within the aggregates. Our results indicate that CaCO3 plays an essential role in the accumulation of SOC and reveal the mechanisms of carbon sequestration in calcareous soils in northern China.

Abstract:Soil aggregates with spatially heterogeneous microenvironments influence microbial communities and mineral protection in agricultural soils and play a pivotal role in soil organic carbon (OC) turnover. However, the mechanisms through which conservation practices affect microbial properties and mineral protection to regulate soil OC accumulation at the aggregate scale has not been determined in the black soil region of Northeast China. Here, we investigated the potential mechanisms of soil OC accumulation in two sets of conservation (Cons) and conventional (Conv) soil samples: (1) Cons (no-tillage with straw mulching) and Conv (rotary tillage with straw removal) in a Phaeozem (Lishu County) and (2) Cons (rotary tillage with straw incorporation) and Conv (rotary tillage with straw removal) in a Chernozem (Da'an County). The soil aggregates were classified into three fractions: macroaggregates (0.25-2 mm), microaggregates (0.053-0.25 mm), and silt and clay (< 0.053 mm). Cons significantly increased soil OC by increasing macroaggregate-associated OC. Cons significantly increased the concentrations of free iron oxides (Fe-d), iron-bound OC and calcium-bound OC in macro- and microaggregates (except in calcium-bound OC within microaggregates in Lishu) and increased exchangeable calcium (Ca-exe) in Da'an. Additionally, Cons significantly increased the relative abundance of Gemmatimonadota in functionally and topologically important (FTI) taxa within macroaggregates. In Da'an, the relative abundance of Ascomycota in FTI taxa within the macroaggregates and microaggregates was significantly greater in Cons. Cons significantly reduced microbial network complexity (except in microaggregates in Lishu). Structural equation modeling indicated that conservation practices regulated stable OC pools accumulation through mineral protection (mainly Ca-exe and Fe-d) and network complexity to increase macroaggregate-associated OC. Our findings emphasize the joint role of soil minerals and microbes in increasing soil OC through the modulation of macroaggregate-associated OC accumulation, which has important implications for enhancing soil quality and improving agricultural sustainability.
[Effects of Land Use Change on Soil Aggregate Stability and Soil Aggregate Organic Carbon in Karst Area of Southwest China]

Abstract:Investigating the relationship of soil aggregate stability with the organic carbon in the aggregate and its response to land use change is conducive to the estimation of soil carbon sink potential, improvement of rocky desertification, and rational land use in karst areas of Southwest China. In order to explore the effects of land use change on the composition and stability of soil aggregate stability as well as the content of aggregate organic carbon, the soil (0-30 cm) of five land use types (secondary forest, pomelo forest, paddy field, pepper forest, and dry land) was selected as the research object. The characteristics and correlation of soil aggregate components and organic carbon under different land use patterns were obtained, and the contribution of soil aggregates to the change in organic carbon after land use change was calculated. The results showed that the macroaggregates in the surface soil (0-15 cm) of the secondary forest, pomelo forest, and paddy field were 63.32%, 52.38%, and 47.77%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of dry land (23.70%), as was also seen in the lower layer (15-30 cm). The geometric mean diameter (GMD) and mean weight diameter (MWD) of soil aggregates in the secondary forest, pomelo forest, and paddy field were significantly higher than those in dry land. In the surface soil, the organic carbon of the secondary forest and paddy field was significantly higher than that of other land use patterns. By contrast, in the lower soil layer, only the organic carbon of the paddy field was significantly higher than that of the others. Under different land use patterns, the organic carbon content of aggregates followed the same order of macroaggregates > microaggregates > silt and clay, indicating that macroaggregates allowed soil organic carbon to accumulate, whereas silt and clay did the opposite. According to correlation analysis, the content of soil macroaggregates was significantly positively correlated with GMD, MWD, and soil aggregate organic carbon, suggesting that the increase in soil macroaggregates could improve the stability of soil aggregates and store more soil organic carbon. Further, as land use change may have significantly affected the soil aggregate, moderate development of forestry and paddy cultivation is suggested to improve the soil carbon sequestration potential in the karst area of Southwest China.
Land use change impacts on red slate soil aggregates and associated organic carbon in diverse soil layers in subtropical China

Abstract:The conversion of natural forests to other land use types generally has a significant influence on soil aggregation and associated soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration, depending on soil depth. However, the dynamics underlying soil aggregate distribution and aggregate-associated SOC concentration after such conversion remain inadequately understood, especially in the red slate soil region of subtropical China, where the stability of soil aggregates is the primary deterrent to soil erosion. This study investigated the effects of land use changes on soil aggregates and aggregate-associated organic carbon content in diverse soil layers in the aforementioned region. Soil samples were collected from seven typical land use types (natural forest, artificial forest, terraced citrus orchard, downhill citrus orchard, kiwifruit orchard, cornfield, and paddy field). Sampling was conducted at a depth of 0 to 100 cm and at 20 cm increments to determine aggregate distribution and aggregate-associated SOC content. Results showed that land use change and soil depth significantly affected aggregate stability and associated SOC concentration. Upon the conversion of natural forests to orchards and croplands, both macroaggregate (>0.25 mm) and SOC concentrations decreased, thereby weakening soil resistance to erosion caused by flowing water. However, the conversion of natural forests to artificial forests did not decrease aggregate stability or aggregate-associated SOC concentration, suggesting that artificial forests are alternative tree species for soil erosion control, aggregate stability enhancement, and SOC fixation. A general linear model indicated that land use changes accounted for 55 % and 56 % of the total variations in SOC concentration in >5 mm and 2.5 mm aggregates, respectively, implying that such changes more significantly affected large-grain aggregates. This study deepens the understanding of SOC accumulation mechanisms and provides valuable information on improving soil quality and physical structure in the red slate soil region of subtropical China.

Abstract:Peak clusters are the main component of karst landforms, and their slopes are generally characterized by different land uses and serious soil erosion. Land use and slope position impact a range of factors, such as soil erosion, which in turn impacts the process of soil development and the patterns of soil properties. Karst hillslopes are generally characterized by different land uses. Land use and slope position impact soil erosion seriously, which in turn impacts the process of soil development and the patterns of soil properties. However, the impact of land use on soil physicochemical properties and the spatial variations and correlations between them are not fully understood on karst hillslopes. Therefore, nine sites had similar soil types, slope gradients, elevations, slope aspects and previous tillage practices were selected to conduct further research. This study was conducted to quantify the spatial distribution, variability and correlation of soil physical and chemical properties and stoichiometries as impacted by different land uses on a karst hillslope in Southwest China. Soil physical properties were significantly affected by slope position and soil depth. The soil bulk density and clay content increased with soil depth, while the opposite was true for the sand content. For the three land uses, the soil bulk density varied the most at the lower slope position, while clay and sand particles varied the most at the middle slope position. The mean spatial coefficient of variation (CV) of soil physical properties was ranked as sand (11.08%) > clay (7.77%) > bulk density (6.85%) > silt (3.81%). The mean spatial CV of soil chemical properties was ranked as available K (44.49%) > total P (16.77%) > total C (16.31%) > total N (13.09%) > available P (8.45%) > total K (7.51%). Overall, soil physicochemical properties exhibited significant spatial differences with slope location and land use on karst hillslopes. Soil chemical properties had greater spatial variation than physical properties, moreover, there were significant correlations between them. The results not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of land use on the erosion process and mechanism on karst hillslopes but also provide a scientific understanding of the sustainable restoration of karst ecosystems.

Runoff Processes and Lateral Transport of Soil Total Carbon Induced by Water Erosion in the Hilly Region of Southern China under Rainstorm Conditions

Abstract:Soil erosion by water destroys the physical protection of carbon in soil aggregates and accelerates decomposition, thus impacting soil organic carbon stocks and making the soil barren. Runoff process and lateral transport of soil total carbon were studied using sloping flumes in an artificial rainfall simulator. The flumes were filled with soil collected from the surface horizon, the underlying laterite horizon, and the deeper sand horizon, three portions of a weathered granite soil profile. The results showed that the initial runoff-yielding time was faster under large rainfall intensities and steep slope gradients. The runoff process on sand soil slopes showed a trend of increasing with the increase of rainfall duration, while the trend on surface soil slopes and laterite soil slopes were mainly increasing rapidly and then stable. The volume of overland flow on surface soil slopes was the largest under the same conditions, with an average value of 14,259 mL, while it was the smallest on sand soil slopes. There was no interfiow on surface soil slopes, and the interfiow curves of the sandy soil slopes and the laterite soil slopes were all single-peak curves. The TC concentration curves of overland flow on sand soil slopes presented a high initial concentration and were then decreasing to a stable state, but the trends on laterite soil slopes and surface soil slopes was not obvious. The TC concentration curves of interfiow on sand soil slopes and laterite soil slopes were similar to those of the runoff process curves, and the TC concentration on laterite soil slopes peaked faster. The TC loss gross amount on sand soil slopes and laterite soil slopes was much larger than that on surface soil slopes. Sediment was the main carrier of TC on sandy soil slopes, which TC loss with sediment was more than 50% in each rainfall test. Runoff was the main carrier of TC on laterite soil slopes and surface soil slopes; TC loss with runoff was above 60% on surface soil slopes. At the same time, partial correlation coefficients showed that rainfall intensity was the most important factor affecting TC loss. The results can provide a calculation method and scientific basis for the estimation of the TC loss on weathered granite soil slopes in the south of China. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Dynamics of aggregate-associated organic carbon after long-term cropland conversion in a karst region, southwest China

Abstract:Cropland conversion has a major impact on soil C sequestration. However, it remains unclear about the changes in soil aggregate and their contribution to C accumulation following cropland conversion in a karst region, southwest China. In this study, three different cropland use types (sugarcane, mulberry and forage grass cultivation) were selected to replace maize-soybean cultivation. The soil was collected at a depth of 0 to 30 cm for analysis of soil aggregates and their OC content. Results showed that macro-aggregate was the predominant component underlying four cropland use types. Forage grass cultivation remarkably increased the OC stock and aggregate stability (MWD and GMD). OC content and stock associated with aggregate varied with cropland use types and soil depth, but were typically highest in forage grass fields. Macro-aggregates contained higher OC content and stock than other aggregate fractions, along with soil depth underlying four cropland use types. The increases in OC stock in forage grass field was mainly due to increased OC stocks within macro-aggregates, which is further attributed to the increase in OC content within macro-aggregates. Overall, forage grass cultivation replaced maize-soybean cultivation was suggested as an ecological restoration model to enhance soil C sequestration potential, owing to its role in increasing OC stock of aggregation and aggregate stability, in the karst region of southwest China.
Organic Carbon Losses by Eroded Sediments from Sloping Vegetable Fields in South China

Abstract:Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) is the most important component of soil. Though small, it determines soil fertility and prevents soil losses. In this study, we examined relationships between the Particle–Size Distribution (PSD) of the eroded sediment and SOC loss, and evaluated the effects of plant coverage ratios (0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 90%), slope lengths (2 m, 4 m), fertilizer treatments (unfertilized control (CK), compound N–P–K fertilizer (CF), and organic fertilizer (OF)) on SOC loss and the SOC enrichment ratio (ERSOC) in the eroded sediments. The experimental results showed that longer slope length and lower surface cover ratios produced larger surface runoff and the eroded sediments, resulting in larger SOC losses. The average SOC loss was greatest in the OF treatment and SOC loss was mainly associated with the eroded sediment. Surface runoff, which causes soil erosion, is a selective transportation process, hence there were more clay-sized particles (<2 μm) and silt-sized particles (2-50 μm) in the eroded sediments than in the original soils. SOC was enriched in the eroded sediments relative to in the original soil when ERSOC > 1. ERSOC was positively correlated with ERclay (<2 μm) (R 2 = 0.68) and ERfine silt (2–20 μm) (R 2 = 0.63), and from all the size particle categories of the original soil or the eroded sediments, more than 95% of SOC was concentrated in small-sized particles (<50 μm). The distribution of SOC in different-sized particles of the original soil and the eroded sediment is primarily associated with clay-sized particles and fine silt-sized particles, thus we conclude that as the eroded sediment particles became finer, more SOC was absorbed, resulting in more severe SOC loss.
[Serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors(SNRIs)].

Abstract:Pharmacology, clinical efficacy and tolerability of serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors(SNRIs) are overviewed. They include milnacipran, venlafaxine, duloxetine, MCI-225 and nefazodone, however, only milnacipran is currently used in Japan. Pharmacology of SNRIs is characterized by inhibition of both serotonin and noradrenaline at the presynaptic membrane and by weak affinity with receptors at the postsynaptic membrane, which expects the same efficacy on major depressive disorder(MDD) as tricyclic antidepressant drugs(TCAs) with less adverse effects in clinical use. Currently available evidences show that SNRIs possess antidepressant effects on MDD at least similar potencies to TCAs with more potencies than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. SNRIs are well tolerated in general and safer than TCAs. SNRIs can be considered to be first-line antidepressant drugs.
Spatial Distribution of Macro-pore Properties in Soil Profile on a Slope of Weathering Granite

Abstract:[Objective]Strong soil erosion affects profoundly soil porosity of slope lands. On slopes the same in parent material but different in erosion intensity, soil pore properties in soil profile vary sharply. This study was oriented to explore spatial distribution pattern of macro-pore properties in soil profile relative to landform positions and soil erosion intensity, a slope of weathered granite under erosion in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province was taken as the study area. [Method]This study in oriented to characterize macro-pore in soil profiles at different landform positions on the slope, with the help of the Shengzhou Soil and Water Conservation Monitoring Station. Along the slope where the station sits, three typical sites, different in erosion intensity, were selected separately, at the top, middle and bottom. A soil profile or soil column, 70 cm in length, was sampled at each site using PVC pipes with known inner diameter. The columns were then CT- scanned layer by layer with high intensity and their CT images were interpreted with the ArcGIS10.1 image processing technology for analysis of macro-pore distribution and its influencing factors. The pore characteristics indices studied include macro-porosity proportion of macro-porosity to total porosity, anomaly of macro-porosity, circularity of macro-pores, proportion of different classes of macro-pores of equivalent diameter in number, and ratio of macro-pores to total pores.[Result]The following conclusions were drawn from the analysis and calculation:(1)Macro-pores dominated all the three soil profiles, and pores between 1～ 3 mm in diameter were the highest in proportion and pores e between 5～7 mm were the lowest. In terms of number of macro-pores, the three typical soil profiles exhibited a decreasing order of the one at the middle > the one at the bottom > the one on the top; in the soil profiles on the top and at the middle of the slope, the proportion of macro-pores number is comparatively small.(2)The difference between macro-porosity and total porosity was very small in all the three soil profiles and decreased with soil depth. The soil layer with macro-porosity higher than the average was distributed mainly in the upper part of the profiles between 0 cm and 30 cm. The difference between soil layers was not obvious and never exceeded 10%, but the deep in the soil profile, the greater the difference. (3)Circularity of macro-pores was a factor affecting the relationship between macro-porosity and total porosity, while the higher the content of clay and silt, the higher the circularity. (4) The proportion of coarse sand was the highest in all the three profiles, amounting to 50% or more,while the proportion of clay the lowest, being no more than 12%. Correlation of macro- porosity with soil particle size was analyzed with SPSS 20.0, revealing that soil macro-porosity was significantly and positively related to content of coarse sand, but negatively to content of clay and silt. The finer the soil particles, the greater the total porosity and the smaller the proportion of macro-pores.[Conclusion]In a word, severe soil erosion alters the characteristics of soil structure, being porous in the upper and layer and compact in the lower layer. Affected by erosion,the soil profiles are dominated with macro-pores, poor in pore structure. The distribution of macro-pores in the soil profiles is obviously affected by the intensity of erosion. The more serious the erosion, the higher the proportion of macro-pores and the more serious the phenomenon of soil water and nutrient loss. All the findings in this study provide a train of thought for evaluation of soil evolution under erosion and contents of the research on soil evolution.
Changes in soil aggregate stability and aggregate-associated organic carbon during old-field succession in karst valley

Abstract:Soil is the largest carbon pool whose change will have an impact on the terrestrial carbon cycle in the terrestrial ecosystem. Old-field succession on abandoned farmland, which usually has a noticeable effect on soil status, is a common phenomenon in karst valley where human activity alters frequently. In order to understand the changes in the accumulation of organic carbon (OC) in aggregates and bulk soil in different stages of old-field succession on abandoned farmland in the karst valley area, soil samples were collected at 0–10-cm and 10–20-cm depth representing three typical stages of old-field succession, i.e., abandoned farmland, secondary grass, and secondary shrub in Qingmuguan karst valley area, Chongqing City, Southwest China. Results displayed that during old-field succession (1) the mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter of the aggregates increased and the fractal dimension decreased; (2) OC content within aggregates and bulk soil had no significant change in topsoil (0–10 cm); OC content within microaggregates and bulk soil had a significant reduction in subsoil (10–20 cm); the OC content within silt and clay fractions was significantly higher than that within the other two kinds of aggregates; (3) bulk-soil OC storage had no significant change but its accumulation relied more on the increase in the number of larger aggregates. It is concluded that the old-field succession in karst valley was beneficial to protect against soil erosion by improving soil aggregate stability, but had a limited effect on soil organic carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Abstract Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) is a high-risk factor for pulmonary complications in esophageal surgery. We reported a case of esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in a patient with severe COPD. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and computed tomography revealed a 3×2-cm submucosal tumor at the lower esophagus, and positron emission tomography showed a hypermetabolic mass (SUV(max)=5.6). Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) was 33.0% of predicted and FEV(1)/forced vital capacity ratio was 40.7%. Taking the patient's lung function into account, we performed a thoracoscopic enucleation for the esophageal GIST while the patient was in a prone position. The postoperative course was uneventful and no significant change was observed in the patient's respiratory condition. Performing thoracoscopic surgery on COPD patients in a prone position is a good therapeutic alternative for reducing the occurrence of pulmonary complications.
Soil aggregate stability and its response to overland runoff–sediment transport in karst peak–cluster depressions

Abstract:Karst peak–cluster depressions are ecologically fragile, and slope runoff is a cause of severe soil erosions. However, the runoff–sediment pattern and influencing factors of typical lithologies slope erosion are still unclear. This study investigated the soil aggregate stability of limestone and dolomite and their effects on interrill erosion using rainfall tests. The dolomite soil aggregates were smooth with fine, tightly arranged particles. The limestone soil aggregates were rough with regularly shaped flocculent granular bodies. Soil aggregates of limestone had a higher microporosity than that of dolomite. The contents of macroaggregate with a particle size > 0.25 mm (WSA 0.25 ) were significantly higher in limestone soils than in dolomite soils ( P < 0.05). The mean weight diameter (MWD) trend was consistent with the WSA 0.25 value. The MWD value for forest soil of limestone was the highest among all soil types, 5.65 mm. With the Le Bissonais (LB) method, the MWD values followed the order of limestone > dolomite soils. The organic matter, Ca and Mg contents were highly significantly correlated with the aggregate stability ( P < 0.01). During rainfall, the trend for soil runoff rates mainly indicated three stages: 0 ∼ 10 min, rapidly increasing; 10 ∼ 30 min, fluctuating; and 30 ∼ 60 min, essentially stable. The stable runoff rates of limestone soils were lower than that of dolomite soils. At a slope of 10°, the soil loss rate of dolomite forest was 0.16 g/(min·m 2 ) higher than that of limestone. The sediment concentrations of dolomite soils were higher than those of limestone soils. The sediment aggregates were dominated by macroaggregates. The content of macroaggregates in dolomite soils ranged from 49.54% to 64.84% at 30 min of runoff and ranged from 51.60% to 69.88% in limestone soils. In general, limestone soils experienced less erosion than dolomite soils because of the difference in soil aggregate stability. The results of this study could provide a theoretical reference for karst rocky desertification management and ecological restoration.

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important pool in the global carbon cycle, playing a vital role in moderating atmospheric CO 2 concentrations. Soil is the largest carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems and, as the basic unit of soil structure, soil aggregates are key to protecting soil carbon pools. However, the influence of soil aggregate particle size, SOC distribution, and the contribution of different particle sizes to SOC is still unclear, particularly under different land use types. In this study, soil samples were collected from five land use types (slope farmland (SF), forest (FL), grassland (GL), shrubland (SL), and terraced field (TF)) in a typical small watershed in the Loess Plateau, China. We analyzed the soil aggregate particle size, composition, and stability after dry and wet sieving, SOC content of different particle sizes in aggregates, and the effects of different aggregate particle sizes and land use on the distribution of SOC. The results showed that, the surface soil (0 ∼ 20 cm) water-stable aggregates were relatively stable, particularly under FL, the mean weight diameter (MWD) value was 2.16 mm. Deep soil (40 ∼ 60 cm) non-water stable aggregates were more stable, and GL was optimal, the MWD value was 3.94 mm. SOC and total nitrogen (TN) were significantly correlated with water-stable aggregate stability indicators ( p < 0.01). The SOC content in the small aggregates (0.25 ∼ 2 mm) was the highest and lowest in the microaggregates (<0.25 mm) under different land use. The carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio of microaggregates was significantly higher in SF (the C/N ratio was 23.17) and GL (the C/N ratio was 31.04) than in other land uses ( p 50% to SOC in SF and TF. In deep soil, small aggregates under all five land uses made the largest contribution rate to SOC at 57%. These findings indicate that carbon sequestration in the study area can be improved by a combination of appropriate soil management with ecological construction to increase the content of small aggregates, strengthen the fixation and protection of SOC, and reduce carbon emissions in the soil.

Abstract:Global karst landforms account for about 15 % of the land area. The development of karst landforms in southwest China accounts for>1/3 of the country's land area, and is considered to be an important carbon storage with considerable carbon sequestration potential to alleviate global warming. Clarifying the response mechanism of soil organic carbon (SOC) to different controlling factors is of great significance to formulate and implement regional carbon sink strategies. Based on 517 soil samples in Guizhou Province, this study used geostatistical methods to analyze the spatial heterogeneity of SOC in Guizhou Province. The effects of altitude, land use, soil type, slope direction, slope position, slope gradient and rock exposure rate on the spatial variability of SOC in karst areas were quantitatively compared by statistical analysis methods. The results showed that the mean value of SOC content in Guizhou Province was 19.59 g/kg, and the coefficient of variation was 69.11 %, showing moderate-intensity variation. Spatially, the SOC content in Guizhou Province showed a declining trend from west to east, with the low-value areas predominantly distributed in the south and north areas. The semi-variogram model showed that the nugget coefficient C0/(C0 + C) was slope gradient (0.255) > rock exposure rate (0.166) > land use (0.08) > slope position (0.059) > slope direction (0.043) > soil type (0.041). This research suggests that the provincial government should pay attention to the control of rocky desertification and the development of modern low-carbon agriculture in the work of increasing soil carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Responses of soil aggregate stability and nutrient stoichiometry to land use change are of great significance to the protection and restoration of fragile ecosystems. In order to explore the influence of the law of land use change on soil aggregate stability and C, N, and P nutrient stoichiometric characteristics in the karst ecosystem of Southwest China, a typical region of the Southwest China Karst was selected as the study area. A series of sample plots were established for the seven typical land use types, and the constitution; stability; and C, N, and P contents and stoichiometric ratios of soil aggregates were studied. The results showed that land use change significantly affected the soil aggregate stability. The soil aggregate stability of corn fields and abandoned land was relatively high, whereas that of grassland and bare land was relatively low. The soil aggregate stability generally decreased with the increase in soil layer. There were significant differences in the C, N, and P contents of soil aggregates between different land use types. The C and N contents of soil aggregates of open woodland and abandoned land were higher, the C and N contents of grassland were lower, and the P contents of soil aggregates of bare land and abandoned land were relatively higher. Land use change also significantly affected the stoichiometric ratio of soil aggregate C, N, and P. The C:N of soil aggregates of arbor forest land, open forest land, and abandoned land was relatively high, and that of grassland was the lowest. The C:P of soil aggregates of arbor woodland and open woodland was higher than that in shrub woodland and grassland. The soil aggregate N:P of arbor forest land, open forest land, and shrub forest land was higher and was significantly higher than that of bare land and abandoned land. There were significant or extremely significant correlations between the constitution and stability of soil aggregates and the stoichiometric characteristics of soil aggregate C, N, and P. Soil aggregate stability was positively correlated with the mass fraction of large soil aggregates. The mass fraction of large soil aggregates increased, and the stability of aggregates correspondingly increased, which was conducive to the maintenance and accumulation of soil C, N, and P nutrients. These results are of great significance for vegetation restoration, soil and water conservation, and land use regulation in karst ecosystems of Southwest China.

Abstract:Variations in soil organic carbon (SOC) and its fractions within soil aggregates in response to land-use change are important to understand the carbon cycles in terrestrial ecosystem. However, responses of total SOC, SOC fractions, and SOC stability in different soil aggregates to land-use change are less addressed, especially in karst regions with serious land degradation. Therefore, bulk soil samples were collected under four land uses with similar geographical characteristics and previous framing practices including farmland (FL), Bamboo forest (BA), landscape tree planting (LAT), and orange orchards (ORO) in a karst region of Southwest China. Contents of total SOC and three carbon fractions based on their degree of oxidizability (F1, very labile; F2, inert; F3, oxidizable resistant) in bulk soil and different soil aggregates (macro-aggregate, micro-aggregate, and silt+clay fraction) were measured. Afforestation significantly increased contents of total SOC and three carbon fractions in bulk soil and soil aggregates, and the influence was more obvious in macro-aggregate than the other aggregates. Contents of total SOC, F1, F2, and F3 under afforestation land increased by 41.73%, 58.19%, 33.91%, and 40.55%, respectively, in bulk soil, by 55.60%, 79.24%, 121.77%, and 43.30%, respectively, in macro-aggregate, by 52.80%, 33.57%, 20.14%, and 75.02%, respectively, in micro-aggregate, and by 26.21%, 35.60%, 29.26%, and 23.75%, respectively, in silt+clay fraction than those under FL. In bulk soil and soil aggregates, proportions of F1, F2, and F3 in total SOC ranged from 0.11 to 0.18, from 0.13 to 0.22, and from 0.60 to 0.73, respectively, suggesting that the stable carbon was the predominant carbon fraction in the study area. Afforestation decreased the values of stability of SOC in macro-aggregate and silt+clay fraction, while it increased the value in micro-aggregate. Although both BA and ORO had higher SOC content in bulk soil than the LAT, but the SOC stability in bulk soil under BA was significantly lower than that under ORO. In conclude, afforestation form FL improved SOC content and altered SOC stability in bulk soil and soil aggregates, and conversion of FL to ORO might be the best choice to increase SOC sequestration in the four land-use types compared in karst regions of Southwest China.
Characterization of controlling factors for soil organic carbon stocks in one Karst region of Southwest China

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) contributes the most significant portion of carbon storage in the terrestrial ecosystem. The potential for variability in carbon losses from soil can lead to severe consequences such as climate change. While extensive studies have been conducted to characterize how land cover type, soil texture, and topography impact the distribution of SOC stocks across different ecosystems, little is known about in Karst Region. Here, we characterized SOC stocks with intensive sampling at the local scale (495 representative samples) via Random Forest Regression (RF) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Our findings revealed significant differences in SOC stock among land cover types, with croplands exhibiting the lowest SOC stocks, indicating that management practices could play a crucial role in SOC stocks. Conversely, there was little correlation between SOC stock and clay percentage, suggesting that soil texture was not a primary factor influencing SOC at a local scale. Further, Annual Precipitation was identified as the key driving factor for the dynamics of SOC stocks with the help of RF and PCA. A substantial SOC deficit was observed in most soils in this study, as evaluated by a SOC/clay ratio, indicating a significant potential in SOC sequestration with practical measures in the karst region. As such, future research focused on simulating SOC dynamics in the context of climate change should consider the controlling factors at a local scale and summarize them carefully during the up-scaling process.

Abstract:Current research has long focused on soil organic carbon and soil aggregates stability. However, the effects of different long-term fertilization on the composition of yellow soil aggregates and the characteristics of the occurrence of organic carbon in the karst region of Southwest China are still unclear. Based on a 25-year long-term located experiment on yellow soil, soil samples from the 0–20 cm soil layer were collected and treated with different fertilizers (CK: unfertilized control; NPK: chemical fertilizer; 1/4 M + 3/4 NP: 25% chemical fertilizer replaced by 25% organic fertilizer; 1/2 M + 1/2 NP: 50% chemical fertilizer replaced by organic fertilizer; and M: organic fertilizer). In water-stable aggregates, soil aggregates stability, total organic carbon (TOC), easily oxidized organic carbon (EOC), carbon preservation capacity (CPC), and carbon pool management index (CPMI) were analyzed. The findings demonstrated that the order of the average weight diameter (MWD), geometric mean diameter (GWD), and macro-aggregate content (R 0.25 ) of stable water aggregates was M > CK > 1/2M +1/2NP > 1/4M +3/4NP> NPK. The MWD, GWD, and R 0.25 of NPK treatment significantly decreased by 32.6%, 43.2%, and 7.0 percentage points, respectively, compared to CK treatment. The order of TOC and EOC content in aggregates of different particle sizes was M > 1/2M +1/2NP > 1/4M +3/4NP> CK > NPK, and it increased as the rate of organic fertilizer increased. In macro-aggregates and bulk soil, the CPC of TOC (TOPC) and EOC (EOPC), as well as CPMI, were arranged as M > 1/2M +1/2NP > 1/4M +3/4NP> CK > NPK, but the opposite was true for micro-aggregates. In bulk soil treated with organic fertilizer, the TOPC, EOPC, and CPMI significantly increased by 27.4%–53.8%, 29.7%–78.1%, 29.7–82.2 percentage points, respectively, compared to NPK treatment. Redundancy analysis and stepwise regression analysis show that TOC was the main physical and chemical factor affecting the aggregates stability, and the TOPC in micro-aggregates has the most direct impact. In conclusion, the primary cause of the decrease in SOC caused by the long-term application of chemical fertilizer was the loss of organic carbon in macro-aggregates. An essential method to increase soil nutrient supply and improve yellow soil productivity was to apply an organic fertilizer to increase aggregates stability, storage and activity of SOC in macro-aggregates.
