Abstract:THE American Medical Association's (AMA's) Council on Scientific Affairs is rewriting its position from scratch on thermography, a safe but controversial test that measures skin temperature. Citation of the council's existing position paper on thermography by the New Jersey Supreme Court last August, in ordering insurers to pay for the test, incensed critics who say controlled trials show thermography to be a useless procedure that should not be used except in research. Even some advocates of the procedure say they are glad that the council is going to replace its somewhat ambiguous 1987 report, which was rejected by the AMA's House of Delegates that December. Delegates then adopted a resolution saying that there is no official AMA policy on thermography. Last December, House members adopted another resolution stating that thermography has not been demonstrated to have any value as a diagnostic test. The House told the Council on Scientific Affairs

Abstract:Water abstraction and subsequent lowering of water table in Sasthamkotta, the largest freshwater lake in South West coast of India raised serious concerns on its management and future implications to terrestrial and aquatic associated fauna. Though a designated Ramsar site, Sasthamkotta Lake has been exposed to various anthropogenic stressors, which in recent years have caused a sudden decrease in its productivity. The study therefore aimed to delineate the present ecological health of the lake in terms of its trophic dynamics and ecosystem efficiency using ecosystem modeling approach. The estimated trophic level (TL) of the lake ranged between 1 (detritus) to 3.76 (fish-eating birds), indicating a skewed structure towards lower carnivorous groups. The ecosystem maturity indices (connectance index, and system omnivory index) revealed the lake to be immature and in the developing stage, though the origin of the lake has been traced back to the quaternary era. The higher value of system overhead (66%) denotes that this ecosystem has been resisting ecological perturbations, in spite of its age is noteworthy. Though the study indicates that the lake's trophic structure is well-established, a variety of anthropogenic stressors reduce ground water levels and diminish aquifer recharge into the lake. This would significantly reduce the lake's catchment area, affecting the entire biota. The results presented here is a pioneering attempt to understand the current ecological condition and impact of future possible stressors that need to be monitored for ensuring ecosystem integrity of the lake.

Abstract:We reviewed 194 revision arthroplasties of the hip and knee performed over a ten-year period. The results of intraoperative Gram staining were available in 169 (87%). Thirty-two were found to be infected (11 hips and 21 knees) and 137 had no evidence of infection. Intraoperative Gram staining was negative in all 169 cases. The method therefore had a sensitivity of 0% for detecting infection. We conclude that the absence of organisms on intraoperative Gram staining during revision arthroplasty does not confirm the absence of infection.

Abstract:Water quality plays a vital role in the sustenance of aquatic life, including fish. Therefore, an inclusive understanding of water quality parameters can be considered an essential step in framing the conservation and management strategy of an aquatic ecosystem. This study examines the habitat suitability of a conservation‐significant fish, the Tor putitora, and two associated fishes, the Labeo dyocheilus and the Garra gotyla, in relation to the water quality parameters of the Kosi River. Four crucial water quality parameters, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and pH, were included in the QUAL2K modeling. Furthermore, hydrological processes were modeled using the soil and water assessment tool, and flow was used as an input in the QUAL2K model. The simulated water quality was correlated with fish habitat and analyzed through the analytical hierarchical process (AHP). Results suggested that the habitats of the Kosi were more suitable in the post‐monsoon rather than pre‐monsoon. Tor putitora, the flagship species of the Kosi, preferred the river habitats with a lower water temperature and higher dissolved oxygen for spawning. Thus, we recommend securing such habitats and managing them in collaboration with local communities for the long‐term conservation of this endangered Himalayan species.

Abstract:Climate change associated with anthropogenic stressors is considered the main threat to these wetlands resulting in reduced water connection followed by a decline in ecological functions. This article presents a systemic approach to assess the present ecological status of a subtropical floodplain wetland concerning the fisheries and associated ecosystem services. The analysis of historic climatic data indicated a weak increasing (R2 = 0.098) and decreasing (R2 = 0.042) trend in average annual air temperature and total annual rainfall, respectively. In addition, a significant reduction in the wetland area was also observed. Altogether, 45 fish species were reported in the studied wetland, of which 2 are listed as endangered and 7 are near threatened. Fish production increased from 2010 to 2020 as a result of culture-based fisheries practice. The present study demonstrated the variation of the important fisheries-related environment and nutrient parameters of the wetland through the geographic information system (GIS)-based spatial distribution map for the reader's digest. It has been found that the provisioning ecosystem services are higher in number (n = 9) followed by supporting (n = 6), regulating (n = 4), and cultural (n = 2) ecosystem services. Finally, we have discussed some important case-specific sustainable climate-smart adaptation and mitigation approaches to strengthen the resilience and adaptive capacity of fishers.

Abstract:Halda, one of the major tributaries of the mountainous river Karnaphuli, is well known as the country's only natural carp spawning ground. Naturally fertilized eggs of carps collected from Halda River are hatched in mud-made scoops on the river bank for aquaculture purposes. However, the river habitat is under constant threat due to human interventions like loop cutting, pollution from the paper mill and power plant, blocking natural water flow of larger tributaries by introducing sluice gates, embankments and rubber dam over the river at upstream, as well natural causes like siltation, erosion and climate change impacts. A study is conducted to address the issues of the ecosystem, sustainable management and the flow regulation impacts of dams in the Halda River, although the flow regulation assessments are conducted based on the macroinvertebrate, index-based framework, land-use effects on the hydrology, new indicators development, hydrologic impact assessment, hydrodynamics in dam regulated rivers, surface-water hydrodynamics and regimes of a small mountain stream and wide range of initiatives. In our case, we considered runoff flow, mountainous flow and dams in the rivers are primary parameters for assessment, so based on previous studies we decided to simulate a hydrologic and hydrodynamic model for the dam and without dam scenarios. Major difficulties and challenges for the environmental flow analysis of a river are continuous data availability. In this research, a hydrologic model ArcSWAT has been built to assess the contribution of rainfall on the river discharge to be used as output from the tributaries in the hydrodynamic model Delft3D. The research findings help us to perceive the effect of the dams on fish breeding condition in the river. In order to perform the environment flow analysis of the river, Tennant method has been followed in the study, which is a secure and reliable approach. The flow regulation impacts are assessed for fish habitat and spawning in the river area based on the simulations. Finally, the findings are further analyzed for velocity profiles for dams by building block method for the sustainable aquatic habitat in the Halda River.

Abstract:Hydrological models are vital for water management to determine in-streamflow, irrigational water, domestic water supply, and biodiversity conservation. This study formulates a hydrological model with a novel approach for streamflow and sediment load in the QGIS-supported Soil and Water Assessment Tool for the Halda River catchment, a unique ecological habitat for natural carp spawning and freshwater sources. The daily simulation uses an innovative stage–discharge relationship technique from available 15-day interval flow data. The model evaluation parameters R2 values 0.80 and 0.62, and NS values 0.81 and 0.61 for calibration and validation of streamflow suggested excellent agreement in the seasonal cycle and most of the monsoon peak flow. The streamflow/precipitation ratio indicates a significant influence of groundwater through infiltration. The baseflow shows a decreasing trend. The sediment load based on suspended sediment concentration at a downstream location is 1,625 tons/day. On the contrary, the model prediction is 30 times lower. The scattered sediment load data support the model estimate by considering relatively lower intervention or land use change in its upstream. This model provides a baseline for daily flow and sediment load for scenario modeling (e.g., climate change, land use change) for environmental flow estimation of the fish habitat, freshwater supply, irrigation, and salinity intrusion.

Abstract:The deep pools are considered vital habitats for both aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity in arid and semi-arid rivers. These 'refugia' habitats sustain the aquatic biodiversity of local and regional importance when water flow ceases. Banas is an ecologically unique and non-perennial river in the Ganga Basin originating from the Aravalli Range and flowing through the semi-arid region of Rajasthan, India. This study maps and characterises the deep pools in the water stressed river using Sentinel-2 satellite data (2019-2022). Mapping and analysis were done using geospatial tools and field data. The composite map reported 2.18 km2 (0.6% of the total area) and 72.42 km2 (19.0% of the total area) of permanent water spread in the floodplain and reservoirs of Banas River, respectively with seasonal variations. A total of 558 contiguous habitats with varying sizes (50 to 314,422 m2) were delineated and most of them were located in the downstream of Bisalpur Dam especially along the river meandering. The composition of the area under different land use land cover classes in the riparian zone varied across the deep pools with medium land use intensity. The high proportion of vegetation and cropland near and far from the riparian buffer indicated existence of the natural and agrarian landscapes, respectively. The indications of various ecosystem services by the deep pools necessitate spatial quantification. Additionally, impact of the various anthropogenic threats on aquatic habitats recommends measures for habitat restoration and conservation planning of Banas River.

Abstract:Changes in aquatic ecosystem due to anthropogenic or natural process are growing concern which requires regular monitoring for water quality to formulate guidelines for their proper management. The present study aimed to understand the limno-biotic status of nine different small (Kanva, Votehole, Anjanapura, and Gayathri) and medium (Jambadahalla, Tunga, Varahi, Shanthisagar, and Boranakanive) reservoirs of Karnataka state of India using physicochemical and the plankton diversity during the three different seasons (pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon). The water quality parameters like transparency in terms of secchi disc depth (m), water temperature (°C), pH, EC (μS/cm), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), TDS (mg/l), total alkalinity (mg/l), NO3−-N (mg/l), PO43−-P (mg/l), and SiO2 (mg/l) besides planktonic diversity were measured using standard procedure. The variables were subjected to Pearson’s correlation analysis to determine the relationship among them during three seasons. Further principal component analysis (PCA) was done to explain the variance. The results revealed that all the reservoir water was alkaline in nature with marked seasonal differences and was fairly rich in dissolved oxygen except Gayathri. Electrical conductivity values of all the reservoirs were below the permissible limit (2000 μS/cm) with a noticeable concentration of PO43−-P in all the reservoirs. High silicate content coupled with dominance of Mycocystis sp. in most of the reservoirs is an indication of eutrophic condition. Principal component analysis revealed the evidence of anthropogenic factors leading to deterioration of the water quality index of all the reservoirs from “poor” to “unsuitable category” except Tunga reservoir (Good quality). Since all these reservoirs support fisheries and are amenable to enhanced fisheries through fish seed stocking, there is an urgent need to monitor the water quality of these multipurpose reservoirs for conservation of aquatic biodiversity and maintain ecosystem health.

Probing river health status: a study based on index of biotic integrity (IBI) in Tapti River of Deccan plateau, India

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities impacted the ecological health of rivers by altering the physical habitat and water flow as well as by pollution. Monitoring of biotic groups for gauging the river health is a prerequisite for assessing the extent of degradation and formulating management guidelines for river restoration. An assessment using fish-based index of biotic integrity (IBI) was carried out in the Central Indian river, Tapti, for probing its health status. For the multimetric index, twelve metrics were adopted under five categories: taxonomic richness, habitat composition, tolerance indicators, species resilience, and trophic composition. Among the studied sites, Betul in the upper stretch was selected as the reference site for River Tapti, which almost meets the upper expectation of the metrics explored. Continuous scoring method was applied to evaluate the biotic integrity in the selected sites of the river. The IBI score based on the pooled fish abundance data in River Tapti ranged from 33 to 60. Assessment of the ecological health revealed that three-fourth of the river stretch was moderately impaired (25-50% of impairment) and the most deteriorated site was Kamrej with 45% of impairment which might be due to its location in the urban area with high influx of domestic sewage and industrial effluents. The IBI scores were plotted and compared with an independent estimate of water quality. The CCA with environmental and IBI variables revealed higher correlation with each other and the functional groups such as carnivores, herbivores, and fishes with high population doubling time (PDT) were found in close association with nitrate-N, total alkalinity, and specific conductivity. The study urges the need for the adoption of proper management and mitigation measures to restore the health and wealth of aquatic ecosystem.

Abstract:A structured literature review using the search term 'ecosystem services' found few relevant studies relating to three contrasting wetlands in West Bengal: the unpopulated Sudhanyakhali Island in the Sundarbans National Park, the populated Gosaba Island separated from Sudhanyakhali Island by a narrow channel, and the East Kolkata Wetland (EKW). Subsequent structured review focused on the EKW using specific service-related terms located only 2 provisioning, 6 regulating, 1 cultural and 3 supporting services. Few services are currently recognized in the literature, with significant gaps in whole service categories. Significantly, there was no published evidence of a systemic overview of service production at these sites. Field observations and stakeholder dialogue informed assessment of ecosystem services using the Rapid Assessment of Wetland Ecosystem Services (RAWES) approach, adopted by the Ramsar Commission, on both islands and three discretely different areas of the EKW. The RAWES surveys found that 32 of 36 ecosystem services were produced from at least one assessed wetland site. Despite low sample size, statistically significant differences were observed in the range of services produced between the five wetland sites and the geographical range at which benefits accrued, explained by differing wetland characteristics and management regimes. Were decisions based solely on evidence provided by existing published knowledge, few ecosystem services would be considered and, potentially, whole ecosystem service categories might be overlooked. Importantly, there would also be no systemic account of service production and interdependencies. RAWES assessment serves as a practical, rapid and systemic approach, taking account of interdependent ecosystem services, supporting protection of the ecological character and achievement of wise use of wetlands. RAWES can also help redress perceptions that the values of peri-urban wetlands are currently under-represented.

Abstract:Assessing river water quality is crucial for human and ecological needs because of the deterioration of the river and escalated water pollution under the threats of anthropogenic activities. In order to assess river water quality, the Damodar River water was evaluated from the perspectives of spatio-temporal dynamics of ecological (organic pollution index or OPI and eutrophication index or EI), bacteriological (coliform count and comprehensive bathing water quality index or CBWQI), and overall water quality assessments (water quality index or WQI and comprehensive pollution index or CPI). The OPI reveals that 44.66% of water samples have heavy organic pollution; however, EI depicts that almost all water samples of Damodar River have severe eutrophication, especially in the pre- and post-monsoon seasons. Moreover, the fecal coliform count and CBWQI indicate the unsuitability of river water for bathing. The overall WQI portrays that 21.56%, 33.59%, and 22.47% of water samples have heavy pollution in pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon, respectively. Moreover, 73.39% of water samples have low CPI indicating slight comprehensive pollution. This study also reveals that the pollution level in the Damodar River downstream of the Durgapur barrage is high among the other stations. The major reasons behind the severe contamination of Damodar River water are urban-industrial and agricultural effluents mixing into the river that lead to higher concentrations of BOD, DO, fecal coliform, COD, fluoride TSS, and turbidity in the river water. Thus, this study carries appreciated information on policy recommendations for the different stakeholders of the Damodar River basin including regional planners, agri-engineers, and ecological river engineers for sustainable river management.

Abstract:Riparian buffers of the Ganga have undergone significant deforestation in the last few decades. The study attempts to understand the impact of increasing anthropogenic interferences on the riparian fringes of the river Ganga. Change detection using land use land cover (LULC), followed by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis supported by data collected from field surveys was carried out from Gomukh to Haridwar. Our results show an increase in the built-up area and barren land, accounting for 4.1% and 4.8%, respectively. An increasing tourist influx, increasing built-up area, expansion of agriculture and the after-effects of the "Himalayan Tsunami" in 2013 have been identified as primary reasons behind the destruction of the riparian forests in the upper stretch of river Ganga. Significant loss of overall vegetation cover, i.e. 17.2% in the last decade (2008–2017) was observed in the analysis. From the field-based surveys, it was observed that vegetation assemblages are changing with the shift from climatic climax vegetation to pioneer species like Alnus nepalensis and the rapid expansion of Pinus roxburghii . A shift in species assemblages further manifests in loss of biodiversity and enhanced invasion of Parthenium, Lantana and Eupatorium species. The present study attempts to provide broader indicators of river health to improve the understanding of the changes in the ecologically sensitive and fragile riparian buffer of the river Ganga. The study can be further used to assess riparian health for long-term planning of restoration of riparian buffers of river Ganga from Gomukh to Haridwar.

Assessment of the Ecological Impact of Pollution in the Damanganga River

Abstract:The Damanganga River faces severe pollution from industrial effluents and sewage, impacting its ecological health. The study aimed to analyze the current water quality status at the proposed conventional barrage site across the river between Silvassa, Vapi and Daman in India. Water samples were collected from three sites along the river during different seasons and analyzed for physicochemical parameters like TDS, COD, BOD, nutrients, fecal coliforms, heavy metals, etc. as per standard methods. Principal component analysis (PCA) was done. GCMS profiling of organics was also carried out. Several parameters exceeded the desired limits. TDS, BOD, fecal coliforms were very high indicating organic pollution and sewage contamination. Dissolved oxygen was deficient at some sites. Cadmium, copper and iron exceeded limits due to industrial releases containing these metals. PCA showed organic pollution as the major degrading factor for water quality followed by industrial contamination. GCMS analysis revealed hazardous organics like petrochemicals, fatty acids, solvents, pesticides and aromatic pollutants at varying levels along the river’s course demonstrating pollution from oil spillages, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff. The findings confirm severe deterioration in the Damanganga's water quality from inadequately treated sewage and industrial discharges posing environmental and health risks. Stringent regulations, proper wastewater treatment, runoff control and regular monitoring are vital to improve the river's condition

Abstract:Analysis of molecular-genetic polymorphism of barley varieties was performed using AFLP-method. A system for identification and differentiation of barley varieties based on AFLP-markers was developed. Results of testing for 19 varieties indicate a high differential ability of the developed system. Identification of varieties can be conducted using one of two proposed discriminatory sets of AFLP-markers. Based on the calculated genetic distances a dendrogram of phylogenetic relations between the varieties was constructed. The dendrogram revealed a separated origin of varieties of malting and feed directions.

Abstract:Wetlands are important ecosystems, and few of them, owing to unique characteristics, have been designated the status of Ramsar sites under the convention of wetlands. Despite the status, few of these wetlands are under threat owing to their social importance. Renuka wetland is one such important Ramsar site in India, which is culturally an embodiment of the Goddess Renuka ji. An international fair is held every year at the lake which attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists. This event is one of the major contributors to anthropogenic risk; other pressures are siltation, pollution, land use activities, and invasive species. Under such a scenario, it becomes important to assess the health of wetlands to take timely decisions about their management. This study evaluates the health of Renuka wetland, using the Pressure State and Response (PSR) model. Relevant data related to the wetland and its catchment from a wide spectrum of sources, namely, field, laboratory, and remote sensing were combined to assess the health of the wetland. Ten indicators were identified, and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to assign weights to the indicators. The wetland health index of Renuka wetland is 0.35, indicating that the lake is in poor condition exhibiting degraded functioning, high external pressure, low vigor, poor resilience, and stability. The study also revealed that the water quality deteriorates post-fair. Thus, the wetland needs attention in terms of management so that the health of the lake improves and is sustained in the future. The study contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 6.6 which focuses on protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems and aims at healthier ecosystems.

Abstract:Conserving and managing ecosystems while guaranteeing economic growth can be seen as a complex decision-making challenge due to the requirement of balancing multiple objectives, the diverse nature of the resources involved, and the influence of various factors—ecological, social, and economic. Additionally, the presence of different stakeholders, including public and private entities from sectors like fisheries, tourism, and aquaculture, add to this complexity. Even though the importance of local capacity-building measures (like access to credit facilities and knowledge or awareness) is acknowledged, policies continue to be unidirectional and not adaptive enough to sensitive areas such as wetlands. This oversight sidesteps the fundamental ecological limits of wetlands, leading to further degradation and loss of these crucial ecosystems. When making decisions for sustainable management, conflicts can occur, so having strong analytical frameworks to guide the process is becoming increasingly important. Using Chilika wetland, a Ramsar site, the study aims to fill this gap by exploring the contribution of Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) and Cross-impact matrix multiplication (MIC-MAC), for decision problems in the field of natural resource management and sustainable development. Through this knowledge of systemic factors, we aim to find leverage points for collective action and increase the system's resilience, by identifying essential players in sustainable transitions or empowering marginalised sections of the community. By mapping out the network of cause and effect relationships, the study highlights how inaction on key variables can amplify negative impacts on other parts of the system. Additionally, the study makes identifying and prioritising impacts on system variables easier, thereby aiding decision-making processes that consider all targets equally important but still prioritise immediate and critical actions.

Abstract:This study assesses the suitability of water from distinct segments of the Ganga River in India for drinking, irrigation, and industrial purposes, utilizing various indices. Conducted in MAR-MAY 2023, water samples were collected from multiple sites along the river, and categorized into upper, middle, and lower stretches. The findings revealed differing levels of suitability for various purposes among the sampled sites within each stretch. Parameters for drinking water quality generally adhered to specified limits across all stretches, except for E. coli, emphasizing the importance of disinfection measures. Moreover, the study evaluated irrigation suitability, with most sites falling within the good to excellent range, albeit some exhibiting elevated sodium levels, particularly in the lower stretch. Analysis of major ion abundance revealed an alkaline nature dominated by sodium and potassium ions over calcium and magnesium ions across all stretches. Heavy metal concentrations were either within specified limits or absent, indicating minimal industrial pollution. However, caution is warranted regarding industrial applications due to water aggressiveness, as suggested by indices such as the Langelier saturation index and Ryznar stability index, which hint at potential corrosion issues. Water quality in the Ganga River in India exhibited variability across the upper, middle, and lower stretches, with each segment presenting unique characteristics and suitability levels. Continuous monitoring and control measures, especially concerning the most probable number (MPN) of contaminants, are imperative to ensure the sustainability of water quality and meet the diverse usage needs along the river. The evaluation of Gangetic water from the Upper, Middle, and Lower Ganga Rivers is crucial for understanding water quality in one of India’s vital river basins. This study assesses physical, chemical, and biological parameters to determine suitability for drinking, irrigation, and aquatic life. Factors like pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nutrients, heavy metals, and microbial load are analyzed to reveal water quality and potential risks. Temporal and spatial variations, influenced by natural processes and human activities, are explored. The findings aid in sustainable water management and conservation in the Gangetic basin, addressing the urgent need to safeguard this critical resource.
