Abstract:Based on the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology（IFIM）， the hydrodynamic simulation and fish habitat simulation are made for the backwater tributary of Baihetan Reservoir by the program of River2D， and then both the quantity change and quality change of the physical habitats therein before and after impoundment of the reservoir are analyzed in accordance with the weighted usable area（WUA）. The result shows that after the impoundment， the total area of the suitable habitat is only 0.8%~25.3% of that under the natural condition and even shows a marginalized distribution according to the difference of the impoundment level. On the basis of the reservoir operation scheme， the total amount of habitats therein within the seasons of spring and summer is to be larger than that within the autumn and winter seasons after the impoundment， which is opposite against that before the impoundment.
Preliminary Study on the Metazoan Zooplankton Community Structure of Fenshuijiang Reservoir and Water Quality Assessment

Abstract:To provide basic information for further reservoir management and restoring,the community structure of zooplankton including species composition,biomass,density,diversity index and chemical and physical parameters were studied monthly in Fenshuijiang Reservoir of Zhejiang province from October 2008 to December 2008.A total of 23 zooplankton species were identified,including 11 Rotifera(48%of the total ),6 Cladocera(26%of the total ) and 6 Co- pepoda(26%of the total ).The dominant species mainly were Keratella cochlearis,Asplanchna priodonta,Bosmina longirostris and Mesocyclops dissimilis during this period.The average density of zooplankton ranged 78.0～297.3 ind./L,and the average biomass ranged 2.044～8.924 mg/L in Fenshuijiang Reservoir.The results in this study indicate that the water quality of the Fenshuijiang Reservoir is betweenαandβtype of medium pollution,based on the biological parameters including the qualitative and quantitative analyses of zooplankton community,biodiversity indexes and chemical parameters with integrated pollution index and chemical evaluation index.It was suggested that the further work should be carried out to strengthen the current reservoir ecosystem.

Abstract:Based on the field survey and reference data of the sea area of the Zhongjieshan Islands from 2021 to 2022, the Ecopath model was used to analyze the energy flow structure of the marine ecosystem of the sea area of the Zhongjieshan Islands; the energy structure of the marine ecosystem was divided into 21 functional groups, and its nutrient structure, energy flow, and total system characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the credibility of the model is 0.414, which is at a medium level. The trophic level of each functional group of the ecosystem in the sea area of Zhongjieshan Islands was 1–3.48, the energy flow structure of the system was mainly concentrated in the first five grades, and the trophic level was relatively simple, with the average energy transfer efficiency of the system being 8.11%, the energy flow range being 2.81–13.04%, the energy transfer efficiency of the primary producers of the system being 7.25%, and the energy conversion efficiency of the system debris being 9.12%. The total system throughput was 2125.96 t·km−2; The analysis of the overall characteristics of the ecosystem showed that the system connectance index and the system omnivory index were 0.45 and 0.24, respectively, while the Finn's cycling index was 8.24, the Finn's mean path length of the system was 2.72, and the total primary production/total respiration was 1.71. In this study, the marine ecosystem model of the sea area of the Zhongjieshan Islands was studied to understand the trophic structure and ecosystem status of the sea area, which is conducive to the sustainable utilization and scientific management of fishery resources in the sea area.

Abstract:Abundant water resources have facilitated the completion and operation of numerous large-scale water conservation projects. However, the operation of cascade hydropower stations has changed the natural hydrological regime of rivers, thereby affecting the integrity and stability of downstream benthic animal habitats. To quantitatively evaluate the impact of infrastructure development, we proposed a coupling of hydrodynamic and habitat models, with benthic animals as indicator species (because they are highly sensitive to hydrological changes). This study established a physical habitat model of benthic animals in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, from the Xiangjiaba to Zhutuo sections by coupling the MIKE21 hydrodynamic model with a habitat model. This model coupled the changes in hydrological conditions and ecological processes to quantitatively reflect the effects of flow changes on river habitat quality, which can be used to predict the effects of hydrological changes on water ecosystems and provide fundamental information for ecological flow and scheduling decisions. Our results showed that by jointly regulating the suitable outflow of the Xiangjiaba Reservoir and the inflow of the Tuojiang, Minjiang, and Hengjiang rivers (three tributaries with water conservancy projects), the minimum flow in the non-flood season and the maximum flow in the flood season could be controlled more precisely. This increases the suitable habitat area for benthic animals as well as improves the stability of their habitat. This study fills the gap in the physical habitat model of benthic animals in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River as well as enriches the research ideas of ecological flow regulation. Moreover, this indicates the first application of the physical habitat model to the joint ecological flow regulation of the main tributaries, thus opening new directions for the application of the physical habitat model.

Abstract:The study of fish habitats is important for us to better understand the impact of reservoir construction on river ecosystems. Many habitat models have been developed in the past few decades. In this study, a fuzzy logic-based habitat model, which couples fuzzy inference system, two-dimensional laterally averaged hydrodynamic model, and two-dimensional shallow water hydrodynamic model, is proposed to identify the baseline condition of suitable habitat for fish spawning activities. The proposed model considers the reservoir and the downstream river channel, and explores the comprehensive effects of water temperature, velocity, and water depth on habitat suitability. A real-world case that considers the Ctenopharyngodon idella in the Xuanwei Reservoir of Qingshui River is studied to investigate the effect of in- and outflow of reservoir on fish habitat and the best integrative management measure of the model. There were 64 simulations with different reservoir in- and outflows employed to calculate the weighted usable area and hydraulic habitat suitability. The experimental results show that the ecological flow for Ctenopharyngodon idella spawning can satisfy the basic demand when the reservoir inflow is greater than 60 m3/s and the reservoir outflow is greater than 100 m3/s. The habitat ecological suitability is the best when the reservoir outflow is 120 m3/s. A more reasonable and reliable ecological flow range can be obtained based on the habitat model in this paper, which provides the best scenario for water resources planning and management in the Qingshui River Basin.

Abstract:Although the rational use of water resources through damming rivers can improve economic benefits, it inevitably changes the connectivity of rivers and the hydraulic characteristics of water reduced river reaches, posing a threat to fish habitats. Habitat assessment can provide a reference for assessing the ecological impact of hydropower development and the effectiveness of habitat restoration. However, previous evaluation methods only considered the number of habitats, which may mislead the evaluation results. In this article, we proposed a novel fish habitat assessment model based on the landscape pattern index method and circuit theory, which additionally considers the spatial pattern and connectivity of habitat patches. This model is applied to the Anshunchang reach of the Dadu River, and the target fish is Schizothorax prenanti . We obtained a suitable ecological discharge range for this river reach from 163.0 m 3 /s to 217.4 m 3 /s. To improve the suitability of fish habitats, we have also attempted multiple restoration measures. Comparing different habitat restoration measures, it was ultimately found that the river dredging scenario had the best ecological improvement effect, with a maximum improvement rate of 9.87 %. The habitat assessment model in this article can help reservoir managers evaluate fish habitats and formulate habitat restoration plans.

Abstract:As the source reservoir of the middle route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the Danjiangkou Reservoir suffers from eutrophication threatens. Thus, it is necessary to develop an eutrophication model for local water resource management. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) eutrophication model for the Danjiangkou Reservoir was constructed. The model is different from the existing models for its embedded sediment diagenesis model with fine grids, and it was calibrated and verified by DO, NH4–N, TN,TP and Chl a. The calibrated model was applied to 9 scenarios regarding the variations of a number of key factors, such as water diversions, the increases in TN and the decreases in inflows. The spatial–temporal patterns of trophic status were analyzed and the potential areas of algae bloom were identified. The results will be helpful for local water quality management and provide a valuable example for other similar research.

Abstract:Abstract Flood pulses are closely related to river ecosystem health. Reservoirs bring many benefits to flood control, power generation, shipping etc., but their attenuation effects on runoff flood pulses should not be ignored. Ecological operation can effectively reduce some negative ecological impacts brought by the reservoir. However, the inability to quantitatively assess ecological effects hinders the promotion of ecological operation in reservoir management. To solve this problem, we proposed 11 flood pulse indicators (FPI), a random simulation method and an ecology-economy coupling model in this study. In addition, we used four major Chinese carps as indicator species and the Three Gorges Reservoir as a case study to test the role of flood pulses in improving the ecological operation effects of the reservoir from the fish protection perspective. The results show that: (1) FPI can be controlled by the reservoir and reflect the flood pulse characteristics of runoff. (2) Random simulation method guides managers to optimize the discharge and formulate eco-friendly operation schemes. (3) Ecology-economy coupling model helps managers analyze the relationship between ecological operation effects and economic benefits. A comprehensive assessment can improve the acceptance of ecological operation, which is conducive to the sustainable development of river ecosystem.

Abstract:The selection of an approach to evaluate habitat suitability for a specific fish or life stage has been a matter of concern in habitat quality modelling studies. This study has taken Jinshaia sinensis, a commercially valuable fish endemic to the Jinsha River, China, as the target fish species. One‐ and two‐dimensional hydrodynamic models were coupled and combined with fish habitat models for a middle reach of the Jinsha River. The resulting ecohydraulic model was used to predict the changes in hydrodynamics and spawning habitat suitability that resulted from the operation of an under‐construction reservoir downstream of the study area. The preference function (product, arithmetic mean, geometric mean, and minimum value) and fuzzy logic habitat evaluation methods were compared to predict the spawning habitat suitability of the fish. The model was validated using the numbers of spawning eggs, and the results show that both the arithmetic mean and fuzzy logic method can be used to predict spawning habitat suitability. The model predictions show that the hydrodynamics of the study area would be altered if the impoundment water level exceeded 969 m. During the spawning season, the spawning habitat suitability would increase from April to early June and has little change from early June to July under the impact of the reservoir impoundment. The optimal river discharge rate for fish spawning is ~3,500 m3/s, and this would not change after the reservoir begins operation. This research can benefit other regions that will be affected by planned dams by predicting the impacts of reservoir operation on fish habitat quality, and the results will help decision makers protect the health of rivers and the overall ecosystem.

Abstract:Rapid anthropogenic nutrient enrichment has caused widespread ecological problems in aquatic ecosystems and the resulting eutrophication has dramatically changed fish communities throughout the world. However, few studies addressed how fish communities responded to eutrophication in terms of multidimensional functional and taxonomic structure, especially how eutrophication acted as an environment filter on functional traits. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of eutrophication on fish species composition, community metrics and species functional traits in 26 shallow lakes from the middle reaches of Yangtze River basin, China. This study validated that eutrophication is an important factor shaping the fish community structure. Regression analyses showed that eutrophication favored higher total biomass and lower functional diversity of fish communities but had little effect on species richness. Despite the fact that some pelagic zooplanktivorous species were more abundant in the most eutrophic lakes, multivariate analyses of the relationships between species traits and environmental variables revealed weak relationships between feeding traits and eutrophication. In contrast, species with a benthic life stage were negatively associated with eutrophication while those with a large body size and high absolute fecundity showed the opposite trend. Due to demersal habitat degradation, and to a lesser degree, to changes in trophic resources availability, eutrophication caused functional simplification of fish communities by increasing functional traits homogeneity among the most tolerant species. Some relationships between functional traits and eutrophication well established in the western palearctic have not been observed in this study, emphasizing the importance of biases resulting from specific evolutionary histories. This work will provide useful insights on on-going restoration and management of shallow lakes in the Yangtze River basin.

Abstract:This study was undertaken to elucidate the food web structure and interspecific interactions in the lakes and reservoirs undergoing eutrophication and to assess the efficacy of lake-wide non-traditional biomanipulation (direct predation of cyanobacteria by proliferating planktivorous fish) for bloom management. Analyses of aquatic organisms and stable isotopes of basic food sources and consumers were performed for Zhangze Reservoir in North-central China. Additionally, an improved scheme based on plankton changes and interspecific interactions is proposed on this basis. Compared with other widely-studied eutrophic reservoirs, the δ 15 N value of each component of the food web in Zhangze Reservoir was higher, the food chain was relatively long and the δ 13 C range of fish consumers was narrower. Planktivorous fish consumed phytoplankton as their primary food source. However, the phytoplankton biomass and the percentage of cyanobacteria increased, and eutrophication did not improve. The findings concerning the composition of consumers and their food sources in Zhangze Reservoir indicate the urgent need to change the fish structure to optimise the structure of plankton community and mitigate phytoplankton overgrowth. The study findings provide a basis for the implementation of effective eutrophication management strategies in lakes and reservoirs where planktivorous fish are prevalent.

Abstract:An eco-hydraulic model was used to determine the levels of fish habitat suitability in the fluvial and lacustrine regions of a new Eco-City. This model has been developed by combining a depth integrated hydrodynamic and water quality model with a habitat suitability index model. Carps were selected as the target species because they represent the major fish population in the study area. Water depth, flow velocity and dissolved oxygen (DO) were used as the suitability indicators. Hydrologic data recorded during 2001-2010 were analysed to determine the base flow, average flow and high flow rates, which were used to represent the discharges in the river for the three stages of the carp life cycle: overwintering, spawning and growth, respectively. Numerical model simulations were undertaken to determine the levels of habitat suitability for carps to live at these three life stages. The model results indicate that under the current flow regime the habitat suitability level in the lacustrine region is too low for carps at the growth and overwintering stages. DO depletion, overriding the role of velocity and depth, is attributed to the poorly suited habitat conditions in the lacustrine region. To improve the suitability conditions in the lacustrine region, a DO enhancement scheme was used. Model results show that the scheme has significantly enhanced the water quality, with the ideally suited area increased from 24.4% to 67.9% for the overwintering stage and from 44.5% to 77.5% for the growth stage. Due to the high flow requirement for carps to spawn in the fluvial region, further numerical model simulations were undertaken to investigate the effect of flow augmentation on the carp spawning habitat suitability. Non-traditional water obtained from recycled domestic and industrial wastewater in the Eco-City was used as an additional water resource. The analysis indicates that the Eco-City has sufficient non-traditional water to meet the high flow requirement for carps to spawn in the fluvial region. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Salt marshes are one of the three blue carbon ecosystems recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). However, coastal salt marshes in China are facing the risk of degradation. To reveal the status of the salt marsh wetland ecosystem in Liaohe Estuary, an Ecopath model composed of 14 functional groups was constructed based on the 2019 ecological survey data. A comprehensive analysis of the system's food web structure, energy flow processes, and overall ecosystem characteristics was conducted. The results show that the energy flow in the Liaohe Estuary salt marsh wetland ecosystem is mainly distributed in three integrated trophic levels. The utilization rates of trophic levels II and III are low, easily causing blockages in the lower trophic levels of the ecosystem's energy flow. The total system throughput of the Liaohe Estuary salt marsh wetland ecosystem is 49,099.039 t·km2·a −1 ;. The system connectivity index and the system omnivory index are 0.207 and 0.109, respectively. Compared with other wetland systems, the ecosystem has a larger scale, but the overall ecosystem characteristic index reveals lower stability and complexity of the Liaohe Estuary salt marsh wetland system.

Abstract:The ecological environment of the rivers is affected tremendously by artificial constructions such as hydropower stations and dams. Closure alters hydrological conditions of the downstream area. Accordingly, the habitat conditions of the aquatic animals change negatively. The traditional habitat site models are mostly based on the statistical data that are drawn from the historical observation records. Interactions between aquatic animals' behaviors and environmental issues are often ignored. The Eulerian-Eulerian-Habitat-Selection method (EEHS) in this paper is based on the Boltzmann equation, from the perspective of continuous and momentum theories, with the influences of other environmental factors such as water depth, temperature, substrate and sediment concentration. The movement procedure and distribution of the objects can be obtained by solving the deformed Boltzmann equation. Meanwhile, the model can be applied to other aquatic animals since the two parameters C-ps and omega are considered with physical significance that are related with specie, in which C-ps, represents its sensitivity to the flow velocity and omega its body size. The model can also be applied to a large scale of the study area by taking advantage of the Eulerian framework used in the model. Chinese sturgeon' distribution was simulated in this paper, with its preference of flow velocity, water depth, substrate and sediment concentration assessed. Compared with the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model, the EEHS model produced more accurate results of the distribution of Chinese sturgeon with a correlation coefficient of 0.95, much higher than 0.32 of the HIS model. The simulation results indicate that the habitat condition of Chinese Sturgeon downstream of the Gezhou Dam fluctuate when the upstream discharge varies from 4000 to 30,000 m(3)/s. Community state of benthic assemblages in relation to planktonic assemblages in a eutrophic thermal stratified reservoir

Abstract:Few studies have explored the relationship between benthic and planktonic assemblages in reservoirs, despite their role in food chains and maintaining ecological functions. Macroinvertebrates play a crucial role in food webs and contribute about 42% of whole-lake secondary productivity. Therefore, their status is vital for maintaining good ecological functions. In this study, we selected Nanwan Reservoir, a eutrophic thermally stratified reservoir in China, to evaluate the community of macroinvertebrates in different seasons and explore the relationships between macroinvertebrate assemblages and different planktonic groups, including phytoplankton, protozoans, rotifers, and planktonic crustaceans. Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta dominated the phytoplankton assemblages, and their proportions varied with seasons. The bad community of macroinvertebrates in summer, autumn, and winter could be attributed to the excessive growth of Cyanophyta or other phytoplankton. Based on the results of partial least squares regression, an algorithm used for prediction, we determined that the excessive growth of algae, crustaceans, protozoans, and Cyanophyta was detrimental to the development of macroinvertebrates, and was indicative of high nutrient loads in the reservoir. However, the growth of Bacillariophyta, Chrysophyta, and Euglenophyta was advantageous to macroinvertebrate assemblages and indicated a better ecological condition of the reservoir. The results of partial least squares structural equation modeling demonstrated close associations between phytoplankton and both zooplankton and macroinvertebrates, indicating their interdependence in this reservoir system. Our study results imply that the status of macroinvertebrates can be predicted by the abundance of some planktonic assemblages, and cost savings from selecting one of the planktonic groups to monitor ecological conditions could be accomplished in future studies.

Abstract:The impacts of the construction of hydropower projects on fish are of particular concern.To understand its effects on fish diversity from the Xiangjiaba Reservoir in the lower Jinsha River,quantitative surveys were conducted for the spatial distribution of taxonomic and functional diversity of fish assemblages in Shaonvping,Suijiang and Huixi sections,located in the lower,middle and upper streams of the reservoir,respectively,during 2016-2018.Combined with the data before(2011)and at the beginning(2015)of impoundment,the change in fish diversity in different dimensions in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River due to im-poundment was discussed.Eurytopic and limnophilic fish species such as Pseudobagrus vachelli and Hemiculter leucisculus domina-ted the Xiangjiaba Reservoir.P.vachelli and H.leucisculus accounted for 30.15％±14.82％and 13.91％±11.16％in abundance,respectively.Nonmetric multidimensional scaling showed that the fish community structure was more similar between Shaonvping and Suijiang sections.In contrast,fish community differed from Shaonvping and Huixi sections.In Suijiang section,fish communi-ties in the three periods(before,during and after the impoundment)were significantly different,indicating that fish communities in Suijiang section have undergone dramatic changes after the impoundment.Higher values of Margalef index,Shannon-Wiener in-dex and Pielou index of fish in different river sections of the reservoir area were shown as follows:Huixi＞Shaonvping＞Suijiang;Taxonomic diversity index and taxonomic differencess index were shown as follows:Huixi＞Suijiang＞Shaonvping.The spatial pat-tern of functional diversity(functional richness,functional evenness and functional divergence)in different dimensions of fish feeding,movement and reproduction in the reservoir area was different.Generally,the highest functional richness and the lowest functional evenness were found in Suijiang Section.The species and taxonomic diversity in Suijiang section showed a decreased trend compared with that before impoundment.The functional richness and evenness also showed a decreased trend.Functional traits of different dimensions,such as feeding,movement and reproduction,had significant changes after impoundment.For exam-ple,the dominant fishes changed from the species with inferior position mouth and fusiform body shape to those with terminal posi-tion mouth and compressiform body shape.Different diversity indices focus on different aspects of fish diversity.The combination of multiple index analysis is conducive to a more comprehensive understanding of the response of fish communities to environmental changes and external disturbances.This study improved our understanding on the effects of hydropower projects on fish diversity in the lower Jinsha River,provided a scientific basis for fish conservation,and surveyed data for ecological effect assessment of Ten-Year fishing Ban.
Integrated Model of Nutrients for the Miyun Reservoir and Its Watershed

Abstract:In recent years, the Miyun Reservoir faces severe problems of water quality and quantity due to continuous drought. In order to simulate and predict the eutrophic status of the Miyun Reservoir and its watershed, an integrated model was developed based on GIS and RS technology, which was composed of non-point source (NPS) simulation model, aquatic ecological-hydrodynamic model, and river water quality model. Ecological-hydrodynamic model was developed through coupling water quality analysis simulation program (WASP) with environmental fluid dynamics Code (EFDC). SWAT was selected as NPS simulation model, which could also perform water quality simulation in the river. Then the integrated model was calibrated using Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and verified using observed data. Results indicated that observed water quality data laid around the mode curves of simulation distribution, and which also dropped into the confidence interval on 80 percent credibility of water quality simulation distribution. In conclusion, the results show that the integrated model can meet the need of application.
Reserve network planning for fishes in the middle and lower Yangtze River basin by systematic conservation approaches

Abstract:Although China has established more than 600 wetland nature reserves, conservation gaps still exist for many species, especially for freshwater fishes. Underlying this problem is the fact that top-level planning is missing in the construction of nature reserves. To promote the development of nature reserves for fishes, this study took the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin (MLYRB) as an example to carry out top-level reserve network planning for fishes using approaches of systematic conservation planning. Typical fish species living in freshwater habitats were defined and considered in the planning. Based on sample data collected from large quantities of literatures, continuous distribution patterns of 142 fishes were obtained with species distribution modeling and subsequent processing, and the distributions of another eleven species were artificially designated. With the distribution pattern of species, Marxan was used to carry out conservation planning. To obtain ideal solutions with representativeness, persistence, and efficiency, parameters were set with careful consideration regarding existing wetland reserves, human disturbances, hydrological connectivity, and representation targets of species. Marxan produced the selection frequency of planning units (PUs) and a best solution. Selection frequency indicates the relative protection importance of a PU. The best solution is a representative of ideal fish reserve networks. Both of the PUs with high selection frequency and those in the best solution have low proportions included in existing wetland nature reserves, suggesting that there are significant conservation gaps for fish species in MLYRB. The best solution could serve as a reference for establishing a fish reserve network in the MLYRB. There is great flexibility for replacing selected PUs in the solution, and such flexibility facilitates the implementation of the solution in reality in case of unexpected obstacles. Further, we suggested adopting a freshwater management framework in the implementation of such solution.

Abstract:Maintaining the ecological flow of rivers is necessary to resolve the contradictions between water resource development/utilization and ecological protection. To investigate the ecological flow of the mainstream of the Si River in Shandong Province, China, the ecological flows in reaches from Sishui Sluice to Shuyuan Station and from Shuyuan Station to Longwandian Sluice were calculated using the habitat simulation method. First, the indexes of relative importance calculated using the results of a fish survey identified Carassius auratus , Pseudorasbora parva , and Misgurnus anguillicaudatus as the most prevalent and therefore the target fish species for this analysis. A model of the fish habitat was subsequently constructed using the River2D software and the relationship curves between different flow conditions and the weighted usable area of fish habitat were plotted for each of the three target fish species. Finally, the ecological flows for the non-flood to pre-flood period (October to June) at Sishui Sluice and Shuyuan Station were determined to be 1.4 m 3 /s and 1.8 m 3 /s, respectively, and those for the flood period (July to September) were 6 m 3 /s and 10 m 3 /s, respectively. The rationality of the habitat simulation method results was subsequently confirmed by comparison with the results obtained using four hydrological methods. Finally, the results indicated that water resource management and regulation of the Si River mainstream should be strengthened during the dry period (April to May) to improve the ecological flow guarantee rate and thereby ensure the connectivity of the fish habitat and sustain fish lifecycles.

Abstract:The river–lake transitional zone of Poyang Lake is a key water area connecting the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake. A good understanding of the relationship between fish communities, hydrological dynamics, and other water environment factors in these waters is important. In this study we examined the status of fish resources in the river–lake transitional zone of Poyang Lake, from 2021 to 2022. We collected 3880 fish individuals, belonging to five orders, ten families, and 54 species. The largest number of fish species were cypriniformes, accounting for 64.81% of the total number of fish species. Overall, the composition of fish species was mainly carnivorous fish, demersal fish, resident fish, and viscous egg fish. According to the relative importance index, there were eight dominant species (including Coilia brachygnathus and Megalobrama mantschuricus ). Fish species was more abundant and community structure was more complex during the flood period and in the downstream area. The regional differences in the fish community in the river–lake transitional zone of Poyang Lake were significant, whereas seasonal differences were not significant. Our analysis showed that the water level and flow correlated significantly with the Margalef richness index and Shannon–Wiener diversity index. Redundancy analysis showed that pH, oxidation–reduction potential, dissolved oxygen, and the water level were key environmental factors affecting the spatiotemporal variation of fish species composition and community structure. This led to the conclusion that high water levels in the flood period and in the downstream area are important factors affecting the river–lake transitional zone of Poyang Lake. Taken together, the results of this study support the protection and management of fish resources in the river–lake transitional zone of Poyang Lake.
